Team Note

T

his annual Island Child Style edition marks not only a celebration of fashion but also a profound commitment to meaningful change. Our Island Child Style team worked tirelessly to infuse this year's runway show with an extra layer of meaning and compassion. For us, fashion is not merely about clothing; it's a dynamic platform for positive transformation. In our pursuit of social outreach, we included the girls from the Homestead Place of Safety, sharing with them an opportunity to experience the empowering effects of self-expression and confidence that the runway provides. A poignant moment in our journey this year was the chance to give back to our community. One of our models, bravely facing a medical condition requiring surgery, became the focus of our philanthropic efforts. We've initiated support for her journey towards improved health, understanding that compassion is an integral part of the fashion narrative. This edition also sees us going "hard' with brand Jamaica,

capturing the vibrant heart of Downtown Kingston as the backdrop for our high-fashion editorial photoshoot. As we celebrate the rich cultural tapestry of our island, we're reminded of the resilience, creativity, and boundless possibilities that define Jamaica despite its challenges Island Child Style has grown into more than a mere runway showcase; it has become a formidable force for positive change. It shapes dreams, fosters confidence, and leaves an indelible mark on the lives it touches. We hope you find inspiration in the stories, images, and the messages within this issue. Thank you to all our volunteers, sponsors, parents, well-wishers and of course, our children... for joining us on this remarkable journey.

Children’s Advocate’s Message

t the core of raising children who are well-rounded and equipped with essential life skills, is the art of exposing them to meaningful and valuable experiences. Children are the transmitters of what they are taught and because of this it remains of great importance that we seek to build them up with positive influences that will serve them as they go through different stages of their lives. As Jamaica’s Children’s Advocate, activities and programmes that provide children with these impactful opportunities are always a welcome addition to the kaleidoscope of solutions that are put forward from time to time. It is for this reason that the Office of the Children’s Advocate (OCA) remains are ardent believer in the Island Child Style brand and in its vision. Like the OCA, Island Child Style understands the importance of having a confident child. From where I sit, a confident child is one who is well-rooted in his/her importance as an individual and fully appreciates and values self. These attributes of self-worth and confidence are key components in the arsenal of the prevention of harm to children and thus are critical features in their protection mechanism. Children who are confident and have a clear understanding of their value almost pose a threat to their would-be abuser, thus minimizing the risk of them even being approached. Of course, this is not the only benefit of being confident as confidence also serves as a great attribute in every stage of life. I could not end without mentioning the fact that the platform of fashion that ICS uses to inculcate this value in children from diverse backgrounds and homes, is innovative, fun and entertaining. The children literally mushroom throughout the process and look forward to each practice session with much eagerness and anxiety. The OCA lauds the efforts of this master class in lifestyle programmes and I know that this product will only grow from strength to strength.

Against this dynamic backdrop, a team of creative minds is weaving a story that transcends the ordinary, capturing the essence of Kingston’s soul and the potential of its young stars. Under the creative direction of Celebrity Style Director Norma Wiliams and the photographic mastery of ‘lens god’ Dwayne Watkins, the story unfolds, capturing the juxtaposition of high fashion against the raw, authentic charm of downtown Kingston. The cobblestone streets and vibrant murals become the runway, and the city itself serves as the canvas for this visual symphony. The children, adorned in the latest highfashion creations, embody the spirit of a city that takes pride in its cultural heritage. From bold pieces by Jamaican designers to modern silhouettes that pay homage to the city’s evolving skyline, each outfit tells a story of Kingston’s past, present, and future. Against the backdrop of historic landmarks, the photoshoot becomes a testament to the intersection of tradition and modernity. The young models, with their confident strides and infectious smiles, become the symbols of a Kingston that embraces its roots while reaching for the stars. As the shutter clicks, each photograph freezes a moment in time, capturing the vibrancy and promise of youth against the backdrop of Kingston’s iconic cityscape. The editorial story unfolds not just as a showcase of fashion but as a celebration of the undeniable spirit that defines Kingston’s youth. But every rose has its thorns and City Kingston acknowledges its struggles; The Monument pays homage to our nation’s children who have fallen at the hands of crime and violence - a scourge on Jamaica, land we love. .

e created this brand to allow creativity to be explored, imaginations to be displayed and ultimately the overspending of multiple shoes to come to an end. As a mother, I had to give away most of my children's shoes before they had the chance to wear them more than 3 times within a 3 month period! My children had multiple shoes based on the outfit they were wearing – we parents are guilty of this. So I thought, why not create a shoe that will allow children to explore, create and insert their personality into their fashion while saving the pockets of parents? Hence the birth of QUIK TRENZ... the fun, self-expressed and creative shoe brand for ALL KIDS... where you can JUST BE YOU! We're excited to share our customizable kids' sneakers with changeable facings with you!

Island Child Style: A BOLD Step for Jamaica’s Children .

I

n the captivating journey of childhood, the runway of life holds invaluable lessons that extend far beyond the world of fashion. Analogous to the poised strides on a fashion runway, the early lessons in standing tall, walking with purpose, ignoring the naysayers and conducting oneself professionally become the foundation for a lifetime of confidence and resilience. Children who learn to navigate life's runway with confidence gain a myriad of benefits that extend well into adulthood. The art of standing tall isn't just about physical posture; it's a metaphor for the internal strength and self-assurance that paves the way for future success. Proper posture isn't merely a superficial trait; it communicates to the world that one is ready to face whatever comes down the runway of life. The runway isn't just a solo journey; it's a collaborative effort where children learn valuable lessons in leadership and teamwork. The choreography of a fashion show mirrors the intricate dance of life, teaching children how to harmonize with others, lead with grace, and appreciate the unique contributions of each participant. Amidst the glitz and glamour, real-life lessons on true beauty and resilience unfold. The runway becomes a stage where children discover that true beauty lies in authenticity and embracing one's uniqueness. They learn that setbacks are not the end but rather a

48 | Island Child Style 2023 | WWW.ISLANDCHILDSTYLE.COM

chance to regroup, adjust their stride, and continue down the path with even more determination. However, there exists a fine line between confidence and conceit. Here, Island Child Style steps in as a guiding force, helping children navigate the triggers that could lead them down either path. By fostering a positive environment, the program channels the influence of the runway towards building self-esteem, encouraging healthy competition, and emphasizing the importance of collective success. Island Child Style becomes a transformative platform where confidence isn't just about striking a pose but about embodying a mindset that will guide children through the challenges and triumphs of adulthood. The lessons learned on this runway become the threads that weave the fabric of a confident, resilient, and compassionate individual ready to make their mark on the world. In the grand performance of life, the Island Child Style runway becomes a training ground for the confident leaders of tomorrow.

Beyond the Seams DESIGNING A FUTURE FOR CHILDREN’S FASHION IN THE CARIBBEAN

C

hildren’s fashion is not merely about adorable miniaturized versions of adult clothing; it is a dynamic industry that shapes and reflects the evolving cultural landscape. In recent years, the global children’s fashion market has witnessed a surge in creativity, with designers and brands alike contributing to its growth. Globally, designers are recognizing the unique space that children’s fashion occupies. According to industry reports, the children’s apparel market is projected to reach new heights, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 8.4% from 2021 to 2028. This growth is fueled not only by an increasing focus on individuality and expression but also by parents’ willingness to invest in quality and style for their little ones. Visionary designers worldwide are leaving an indelible mark on children’s fashion. Brands like Stella McCartney Kids, Burberry Kids, and Gucci Kids have successfully translated their distinctive aesthetics into children’s lines, setting trends that mirror the sophistication and creativity found in adult fashion. This shift is challenging the conventional norms of children’s clothing, infusing it with a sense of individuality and self-expression. 50 | Island Child Style 2023 | WWW.ISLANDCHILDSTYLE.COM

While mass-market brands continue to dominate the children’s fashion industry, they face unique challenges. The pressure to produce quickly and affordably often results in a compromise on quality and originality. Fast fashion for children, although accessible, can contribute to environmental concerns due to the rapid turnover of trends and increased waste. In response to the challenges posed by mass production, there is a growing emphasis on ethical and sustainable children’s fashion. Parents are increasingly seeking out brands that prioritize eco-friendly materials, fair labor practices, and longevity in design. This shift reflects a broader societal awareness of the impact of consumer choices on the environment and communities. Designers and brands are instrumental in shaping the narrative, influencing not only how children dress but also how they perceive themselves and the world around them. As the industry navigates challenges, the rise of ethical and sustainable practices is promising, indicating a collective effort to ensure that the impact of children’s fashion is not only stylish but also responsible and lasting. challenges of the manufacturing industry. The local sector faces constraints ranging from limited resources to regulatory hurdles, putting a strain on the production of quality children’s clothing. Yet, despite these difficulties, a group of designers stands tall, denying the challenges they face and committed to delivering exceptional garments for the region’s children. The landscape is witnessing a transformative shift catalyzed by the emergence of Island Child Style. This groundbreaking platform has not only thrust Caribbean children’s fashion into regional and international limelight but has also become a catalyst for change. By showcasing the indomitable spirit of designers who navigate adversities to create enchanting clothing, Island Child Style has become a symbol of triumph over challenges. One of the pronounced impacts of this movement is evident in job creation within the creative industry. The vibrant designs not only adorn children but also create opportunities, fueling economic growth.

52 | Island Child Style 2023 | WWW.ISLANDCHILDSTYLE.COM

As Island Child Style gains momentum, the ripple effect extends to tourism, attracting families seeking not only the sun-soaked beaches but also the distinctive and culturally rich children’s fashion scene. In the heart of these challenges lies an industry that refuses to be confined by limitations, with designers crafting not just clothes but dreams for the little ones. The journey from sewing machines to catwalks is arduous, yet these designers persist, creating a narrative that goes beyond seams, connecting creativity, job opportunities, and the allure of Caribbean fashion to a global audience. The resilience of these designers shines through, and as Island Child Style continues to lead the charge, the world watches a vibrant revolution unfold in children’s fashion in the Caribbean.

tanding tall and proud and remaining focused despite the noise in the crowd is the hallmark of the individual who understands the concept that fashions fade, but style and class are eternal. We pride ourselves with making more than 'just a model'. Each week, as our children prepare to 'rip the runway, they will also be immersed in behaviour-altering and thought-invoking lessons. But not lessons like in a classroom! They are immersed in hands-on experiences while sometime not even realising that they are learning and growing. We promise that our children will emerge from the Island Child Style experience more confident, more secure and far bolder than he or she started out. During our 8-week programme, our children discover his or her 'next level’ self while understanding that he or she is capable of achieving bigger dreams and taking on new challenges. n the proverbial runway, fashion transcends its role as just clothing, and emerges as a canvas for powerful life lessons. The runway is considered a beacon of style and beauty, but it tells a narrative that extends beyond the garments, and becomes a stage for resilience, self-expression, and the pursuit of dreams. It’s not just a showcase of aesthetics; it is a reflection of the human spirit, offering wisdom that extends far beyond the confines of the catwalk.

THE RUNWAY OF RESILIENCE

Each child is unique and that's what makes them special. Teach our children that confidence shines when we embrace our individuality and when you feel good about yourself - it shows in your walk and smile. Being true to who you are is the most beautiful thing you can do.

Mistakes are part of growth, and every stumble is a chance to learn. Replace selfdoubt with self-belief through affirmations and constant reminders that perseverance is the secret to overcoming any obstacle.

As parents, we can encourage our children to express themselves and celebrate their individuality by offering sincerepraise at the appropriate time to boost their self-esteem. This is also an opportunity to nurture authenticity, because the truth is our children know deep down when they are not deserving of false praise.

As parents, we can encourage a growth mindset by fostering by praising effort and not just success. Teach them the power of positive self-talk be a pillar of encouragement during challenging times.

CONFIDENCE FROM WITHIN

THE WALK OF SELF-LOVE

True confidence comes from feeling good about who you are on the inside. When our children understand that treating others with respect reflects our inner beauty, it instills the value of kindness and respect toward others.

We start with the simplest instruction; Ǥ We encourage our children to embrace ‘imperfections’ because nobody is perfect, but we remind that that they are perfect just the way they are. We tell each child that their biggest fan should always be themself. We remind them that confidence radiates and that elf-love is the most beautiful light you can shine.

THE RUNWAY OF SUPPORT Support from fellow models on the runway is a pillar that success is collective. Here we learn to celebrate differences and to embrace diversity on and off the runway. This is also when our young models see and learn that encouragement is contagious when we lift each other up; it multiplies confidence.

For our parents, we are teaching your child to value themselves and their worth. We reinforce beauty from within and celebrate their uniqueness as part of what makes Ǥ ᶺ

.

For parents, our role as cheerleader means that we are their biggest supporters, both on and off the runway.

CATWALK OF COURAGE It’s not easy to get up and walk on an 80 ft runway. The runway is a stage and we teach our children not to let fear steal your spotlight. Walk tall, stand straight, and maintain eye contact. Confidence is your most beautiful accessory no matter what garment they are wearing. We teach the power of confident posture and eye contact and remind them constantly that courage is the key to success.

UNVEILING POTENTIAL The runway is where many dreams take shape - whether or not your child wants to be a model. Each walk is a step towards realizing their full potential and embracing new opportunities: Confidence opens doors to new experiences and we encourage all our parents to inspire their children to dream big and set goals and to help them to recognize the opportunities for personal growth and self-discovery.

t a friend’s insistence, we chose the enchanting Ocean Cliff Hotel in Negril, Jamaica, as our haven for a weekend escape. Nestled along the stunning cliffs of Negril’s west end, Ocean Cliff is designed for guests seeking respite from the demands of daily life. The boutique property offers an intimate setting that resonates with the beauty of simplicity - exactly what we wanted. Our retreat commenced with a culinary journey that delighted the senses. The dining experience at Blue Mahoe - the on-property restaurant at Ocean Cliff, is a masterpiece, each dish a symphony of flavors curated with precision. Dining on the terrace, overlooking the vast expanse of the Caribbean Sea, provided the perfect ambiance for intimate conversations and shared moments. You can imagine that these moments are few and far between at home. The spa pavilion at Ocean Cliff is a haven within a haven. From the moment the massage therapist's

hands met my shoulders, the cares of the world melted away - for me at least. My husband’s snores told me that he too enjoyed the experience. The spa treatments are tailored to nurture not just the body but also the soul, and I genuinely felt an even deeper connection with my husband. We needed this. One of the highlights of our stay was the intentional lack of distractions. No buzzing phones or urgent emails; just the rhythmic sounds of the ocean and the genuine presence of each other. The tranquility that permeates Ocean Cliff allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the essence of being a couple, remembering the spark that ignited our journey together. Ocean Cliff may not be for everyone, and that's precisely its charm. It's for those who want to revel in each other's company, and my husband and me, it was rediscovering the magic that first brought us together. In the busyness of life and of parenting, the threads of a strong marriage are crucial.

We returned to our children, kicking and screaming (lol), but also refreshed and reconnected. I couldn't help but reflect on the importance of nurturing the heart of our home—the love between us. Ocean Cliff provided the canvas for our retreat, and it is my pleasure to share this hidden gem with those who understand the beauty of enjoying each other's company. Here's to love, laughter, and the enduring strength of partnerships! Signed, A Grateful Mother and Wife

ntroducing Troy Oraine Williamson, the creative force, designer, and stylist behind Tribe Nine Studios. Born in Denham Town, Kingston, Troy's journey began with an early adventure to London alongside his seamstress mother. The rhythmic hum of a sewing machine sparked a lifelong passion for the beauty of creating garments that captivate with bright colors and movements of their own. Troy's fascination with movement led him into the realms of choreography and professional dance, featuring in videos on The X-Factor, MTV, and performances alongside Beyoncé. However, amidst these exhilarating paths, he felt a yearning for more authentic conversations, the lively energy of Kingston, and the dawn's chorus of birdsong with his "cocoa tea." This yearning marked a profound homecoming. In 2018, fueled by determination, intuition, and abundant talent, Troy unveiled Tribe Nine to the world. Tribe Nine speaks a distinct dialect in the fashion world,

defying boundaries, championing individuality, and erasing the confines of gendered fashion. Personal style, according to Troy, is deeply personal and not bound by fleeting trends. Clothes should exude joy effortlessly and never own the wearer. Tribe Nine collections defy seasons and amplify the artistry of local craftsmen. Meticulously handcrafted in Troy's Kingston atelier, each piece is a labor of love, ensuring perfection before embarking on its journey. Reflecting Troy's life journey and inner dialogues, Tribe Nine mirrors ancestral connections and the places he's lived, infusing every creation with profound meaning and a sense of kinship. More than a brand, Tribe Nine Studios embodies Troy's life narrative, telling stories in every stitch, melodies of a sewing machine, and the symphony of a global journey. Join Tribe Nine Studios and be a part of this exhilarating tale together.

Tiny Hands and Feet

M

arita Williams is the owner of Tiny Handz and Feet, a boutique that caters to kids 12 and under. The business was established in 2018 as an online store that offered a wide range of baby and maternity items. Less than a year after its inception, I decided to introduce heritage day clothing (bandana and Jamaican colours) that were different and more appealing than some that I was seeing at the time. In late 2019, I opened a physical location at 22 Baldwin Crescent in Duhaney Park. At that time, more options were introduced for heritage day such as Indian, Chinese, Spanish and African. Career day clothing for the popular options such as doctor, police, fireman and soldier were also being offered and I realized there was a good market for these items. I get a lot of traffic because of the Jamaican-made costume and as such, that is the main focus right now. My aim is to offer new career options and different heritage designs for each new school year. Persons can follow the business on Instagram @tinyhandzandfeet1

LeeDesignz has always been a dream of mine since I was a child. ....lost in an extreme passion for fashion I became enamored, intrigued and infatuated by high fashion garment construction. I had an immense urge to spend on clothing and then add a twist, my clothing bills became so high that one day my father sat me down, cut up my credit card and told me to flip my position by making a living from what was draining my pockets....clothing. CleeDesignz was born on October 31, 2005. I started on my veranda, then in a designated room in my home, all the while using my bedroom as the fitting room. By December of that same year. every chair in my home was being occupied by customers waiting to fit and collect. A career that started with a dream, a little bit of hope, one worker, no experience and the person that believed in me the most...my dad....began to flourish. Today with 10 workers, 7 full-time. And 3 part time, we have become a force to be reckoned with. We do alterations, custom designs and client’s designs - the sky is the limit. My ambition for my brand is to become international with multiple geographical locations from Canada through to Europe. We are a diverse company that embodies change and hopes to futuristically influence the way each fashionista receives and embodies style. Slogan: Why look like a 7 when you have the opportunity to be 10? Fashion is an absolute feeling, never a product, that’s why when you remove the outfit you still feel absolutely fantastic knowing you nailed and slayed all day! My biggest achievement so far was showcasing a few of my items at Island Child Style fashion show. My mentor Norma Williams got me involved and it was the most amazing experience ever. I try to balance my passion for crocheting with my school work as some pieces really take some time to complete. " I am currently on Instagram as Crochet_Jamaica.
