“Each year South Australians gather by the thousands in Elder Park to take part in one of our greatest community traditions: the annual Carols by Candlelight.
It’s a beloved celebration of the festive season that brings families and friends old and new together to sing along to classic Christmas favourites in the company of some of Australia’s most well-known entertainers, and thrill at the spectacular annual fireworks display.
Yet Carols by Candlelight is more than just a wonderful community event: it is also a major fundraiser for St John Ambulance SA. The money raised helps continue its crucial work in delivering health and medical services at events, first aid training, and social inclusion programs.
The South Australian government is a proud and ongoing supporter of Carols by Candlelight, and I look forward to sharing in this year’s celebration of spirit and song.”
Peter Malinauskas Premier of South Australia

Christmas is a truly special time in the City of Adelaide, and we are delighted to once again support the St John Carols by Candlelight.
Generations of South Australians have gathered in Elder Park to celebrate the season together. This event also supports the vital work of St John Ambulance, whose volunteers and programs make a difference to tens of thousands of people each year through first aid, community care and social inclusion. I encourage everyone to give generously.
Throughout December, Adelaide is glowing with festive cheer. From Christmas markets to concerts and family celebrations across the city and North Adelaide, there are countless ways to share the spirit of the season. To discover what’s on, visit cityofadelaide.com.au/christmas.
Christmas reminds us of the importance of kindness, connection and giving back. On behalf of my family and the City of Adelaide, I wish you peace, joy and a very Merry Christmas.
The Right Honourable The Lord Mayor of Adelaide Dr Jane Lomax-Smith

St John Ambulance
We are delighted to once again share the magic of Christmas with the South Australian community, as the custodians of Carols by Candlelight.
This year holds special significance as we celebrate 140 years of St John Ambulance in South Australia. For generations, our dedicated volunteers have been there in moments that matter –delivering health and medical services at community events just like Carols, teaching lifesaving skills, and providing care and connection to those in need.
Thank you for joining us for this special Christmas tradition and for supporting St John. I wish you and your loved ones a joyful festive season and a safe, healthy, and happy New Year.
Maree Geraghty CEO, St John Ambulance SA

Carols History
Christmas Eve 1944
The very first Carols in Adelaide took place at Elder Park on Christmas Eve in 1944, when thousands of South Australians gathered by candlelight to sing together under the stars. Organised by The Commercial Travellers’ Association of South Australia and radio station 5AD (now Mix 102.3), the event drew an incredible crowd of around 50,000 people – almost ten percent of the state’s population – their voices rising from the lawns of Elder Park to create a truly magical sight and sound.
2025 Celebrating 81 years
For generations of South Australians, Carols by Candlelight has been part of what makes Christmas feel like Christmas. Though it has grown into a national television broadcast on the Seven Network, Carols remains at heart a local tradition – one that brings families and friends together to celebrate the spirit of Christmas. Over the years, it has been cared for by several South Australian charities, and since 2022, St John Ambulance SA has proudly carried on the legacy of this iconic event.

What’s one message you’d like to share with everyone this Christmas?
My message is to focus on your family and friends, on people you love, forget the world news for this holiday season and rejoice in all the blessings you have
Who or what are you most grateful for this year?
I’m grateful that we’ll all be together again in Australia, that I have a wonderful expanding family, we’re all in fairly good health and most of all that I get to share my new Christmas new album with everyone this year.
What do you love most about performing at Adelaide Carols?
I love the faces of the families and the sea of lights out in the vastness of Elder Park. It’s the most special event for my calendar year as it’s filled with childhood memories and is always a full circle moment for me.
If you were one of Santa’s reindeers, what would your name be?
I’d be extremely happy if I was a reindeer who flew for Santa, I think I’d be smiling all the time. I guess I’d be called Joyful because it would suit my attitude very well.

James Johnston
What’s one message you’d like to share with everyone this Christmas?
It’s not about what’s under the tree, it’s who’s around it. So, wherever you are this Christmas, take a second to be grateful, make a memory, and tell your family you love ‘em.
Who or what are you most grateful for this year?
Without a doubt, my family. Talia and the boys are my whole world. They keep me grounded when life gets crazy, and they remind me why I do what I do.
If you were one of Santa’s reindeers, what would your name be? Probably “Rowdy.” I’d be the one kicking up dust, getting everyone fired up before we take-off.

I am most grateful for my wife Sandie. She’s a Deputy Principal but still has time to support all our kids (16 to 33) with overcoming every conceivable obstacle life throws up
What do you love most about performing at Adelaide Carols?
I love Adelaide Carols because it always feels like people just walked out of their homes crossed into the park and sat down. It’s the best community vibe in the country.

Leo Sayer
What’s one message you’d like to share with everyone this Christmas?
Let’s bring more love and peace this December. We can all do this by being caring and understanding of others. Their concerns, their joy and their lives are just as important as ours – let’s make an effort for Christmas to be shared with everyone.
Who or what are you most grateful for this year?
I had a wonderful concert tour all over Australia this fall, performing with my amazing musicians and meeting some incredible folks along the way. It just reminded me why I’m such a proud and grateful Aussie!

Marina Prior
What’s one message you’d like to share with everyone this Christmas?
We sing beautiful Carols every year about peace on earth. In a world that has so much strife, we are indeed blessed to live in a country that is not waging war. We have freedom to live as we choose. We have peaceful lives compared to so many. May we indeed be grateful to live in this beautiful country, and may we spread peace in simple ways to all we meet.
What’s the one dish/food item that must be on your Christmas table every year?
Every year, there must be fresh oysters and prawns!!! And champagne!!
If you were one of Santa’s reindeers, what would your name be? If I were one of Santa’s reindeers, I would be “Diva”! Would he mind adding a new name to the crew?
Marshall Hamburger
What’s one message you’d like to share with everyone this Christmas?
Tell the people you love that you love them! Don’t hold back on those New Year’s resolutions, dream for something larger than yourself.
Who or what are you most grateful for this year?
I’m most grateful for the people in my life who have stuck by my side and treated me with unyielding kindness and given me ever-present hope! A special mention as well to my lovely girlfriend, she has been an absolute blessing.
If you were one of Santa’s reindeers, what would your name be? Okay, I have two options! Either “Hambuck the Hearty” or “Merridash”. The first one is a play on my last name which is “Hamburger” and the second is one is a combination of my name “Marshall” and the word “Merry”!

Paulini
What’s one message you’d like to share with everyone this Christmas?
Times have been tough for everyone this past couple of years, so I think it’s more important now than ever to make an effort to be with loved ones this Christmas. Between my work commitments I will be flying home on Christmas Day to ensure my family and I are together enjoying great food and lots of Christmas Carols.
Who or what are you most grateful for this year?
I am grateful to my entire family both here and in Fiji. My closest friends (they know who they are) and those that support me professionally in everything that I do, these people help keep me humble. I am also very grateful for my puppy Rocky!
What do you love most about performing at Adelaide Carols? Most importantly I love being asked to come back time and time again to perform at the Adelaide Carols. Christmas really is my favourite time of year; it marks the birth of Jesus Christ who came with a message of salvation and love and I believe that is what we achieve by coming together at Christmas.
Taylor Henderson
What’s one message you’d like to share with everyone this Christmas?
I think Christmas is a reminder that the real magic isn’t in what’s under the tree, but who’s sitting around it.
Who or what are you most grateful for this year?
I’m grateful for the people who never stopped believing in me, even when I doubted myself. I have to say my girlfriend has been an absolute blessing in my life. I have no idea how I got her. She is just the most beautiful thing to ever happen to me.
What’s the one dish/food item that must be on your Christmas table every year?
Definitely mum’s trifle. Perfectly layered, slightly boozy, and gone within minutes.
If you were one of Santa’s reindeers, what would your name be?
I’m always excited to raid the incredible food they have for the artists backstage at Carols so put down as ‘Hunger-Pains’.

THE FIRST NOEL
The first Noel the angels did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter's night that was so deep
Noel, Noel
Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel
They looked up and saw a star Shining in the East, beyond them far, And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued, both day and night
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel
And by the light of that same star, Three wise men came from country far, To seek for a King was their intent, And to follow the star wherever it went
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel
Born is the King of Israel

AWAY IN A MANGER
Away in a manger
No crib for a bed
The little Lord Jesus
Laid down his sweet head
The stars in the bright sky
Looked down where he lay
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep in the hay
The cattle are lowing
The baby awakes
But little Lord Jesus
No crying he makes
I love thee, Lord Jesus
Look down from the sky
And stay by my side
Until morning is nigh
Be near me, Lord Jesus
I ask thee to stay
Close by me, forever
And love me, I pray
Bless all the dear children
In thy tender care
And fit us for Heaven
To live with Thee there
Away in a manger

O HOLY NIGHT
O Holy night
The stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Saviour's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining Till he appeared and the soul felt it's worth
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks, a new and glorious morn Fall on your knees. Oh hear the Angel voices
O night divine, O night when Christ was born
O night divine, O night when Christ was born
Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is love and His gospel is peace
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother; And in His name all oppression shall cease
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! His Name forever praise we, Noel, Noel, O night, O night divine Noel, Noel, O night, O night divine
Noel, Noel, O night, O holy night

RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER
You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen
You know Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen
But do you recall the most famous reindeer of all?
Rudolph the red nosed reindeer, had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it, you would even say it glows
All of the other reindeer, used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolph, join in any reindeer games
Then one foggy Christmas Eve, Santa came to say “Rudolph with your nose so bright, won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”
Then how the reindeer loved him, as they shouted out with glee
“Rudolph the red nosed reindeer, you’ll go down in history”
Then one foggy Christmas Eve, Santa came to say “Rudolph with your nose so bright, won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”
Then how the reindeer loved him, as they shouted out with glee
“Rudolph the red nosed reindeer, you’ll go down in history”
You go, Rudolph!

You better watch out
You better not cry
You better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is comin' to town
He's making a list
He's checking it twice
He's gonna find out
Who's naughty or nice

He sees you when you're sleeping
He knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake
So you better watch out
You better not cry
You better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is comin' to town
With little tin horns and little toy drums
Rooty toot toots and rummy tum tums
Santa Claus is comin' to town
And curly head dolls
That toddle and goo Elephants, boats And kiddie cars too
Santa Claus is comin' to town
The kids in girl and boyland
Will have a jubilee

JINGLE BELLS
Jingle Bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh
Dashing through the snow, in a one-horse open sleigh
O’er the fields we go, laughing all the way
Bells on bobtail ring, making spirits bright
What fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight, Oh
Jingle Bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse o-pen sleigh
WHITE CHRISTMAS
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white
And may all your Christmases be white

HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Let your heart be light
Next year all our troubles will be out of sight
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Make the Yuletide gay
Next year all our troubles will be miles away
Here we are as in olden days
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more
Through the years we all will be together
If the fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough and have yourself a merry little Christmas now
Here we are as in olden days
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more
Through the years we all will be together
If the fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
JOY TO THE WORLD
Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing, And Hhaven, and heaven, and nature sing
Joy to the world, the Saviour reigns
Let men their songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy
He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of his righteousness, And wonders of his love, And wonders of his love, And wonders, wonders, of his love
Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare him room, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing

BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE
I really can't stay
Baby, it's cold outside
I've got to go away
I can call you a ride
This evening has been
I’m so glad that you dropped in
So, very nice
Time spent with you is paradise
My mama will start to worry
I’ll call the car and tell them to hurry
My daddy will be pacing the floor
Wait, what do you still live at home for
So really I'd better scurry
Your driver his name is Murray
But maybe just a half a drink more
Oh we’re both adults, so who’s keeping score
What will my friends think
I think they should rejoice
If I have one more drink
It’s your body and your choice
Oh you really know how
Your eyes are like starlight now
To cast a spell
One look at you, and then I fell
I ought to say no, no, no
Then you really ought to go, go, go
At least I’m gonna say that I tried Well, Murray, he just pulled up outside
I really can’t stay
I understand baby
Baby, it’s cold outside
I simply should go
Text me when you get home
Oh, I’m supposed to say no
I guess that’s respectable
This welcome has been I feel lucky that you dropped in
So nice and warm
But you better go before it storms
My sister will be suspicious
Gosh, your lips look delicious
My brother will be there at the door
Oh he loves my music baby I’m sure
My gossipy neighbour’s vicious
I’m a genie, tell me what your wish is
Well, maybe just another dance more
That’s something we should probably explore
I’ve got to get home
Oh baby, I’m well aware
Say, lend me a coat
Oh, keep it girl, I don’t care
You’ve really been grand I feel when you touch my hand
But don’t you see I want you to stay, it’s not up to me
There’s bound to be talk tomorrow
Well, they can talk, but what do they know
At least there’ll be plenty implied
Oh, let them mind their business and go
Ma’am, I really can’t stay
Murray, just go on
It’s cold baby
It’s cold baby
Oh, I don’t wanna go home
It’s cold outside

LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW
Oh the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
Now it doesn't show signs of stopping
And I've brought some corn for popping
The lights are turned way down low
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
When we finally kiss goodnight I hate going out in the storm
But if you really hold me tight
All the way home I'll be warm
Now the fire is slowly dying
My dear we're still goodbye-ing
But as long as you love me so
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
When we finally kiss goodnight I hate going out in the storm
But if you really hold me tight
All the way home I'll be warm
The fire is slowly dying
And my dear we're still goodbye-ing
But as long as you love me so
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
Let it snow
Let it snow
Let it snow
ROCKIN’ AROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE
Rockin' around the Christmas tree
At the Christmas party hop
Every couple tries to stop

Mistletoe hung where you can see

Rockin' around the Christmas tree
Let the Christmas spirit ring
Later we'll have some pumpkin pie
And we'll do some caroling
You will get a sentimental feeling when you hear
Voices singing, let's be jolly
Deck the halls with boughs of holly
Rockin' around the Christmas tree
Have a happy holiday
Everyone dancin' merrily
In the new old-fashioned way
You will get a sentimental feeling when you hear
Voices singing, let's be jolly
Deck the halls with boughs of holly
Rockin' around the Christmas tree
Have a happy holiday
Everyone dancin' merrily
In the new old-fashioned way

JINGLE BELL ROCK
Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock
Jingle bells swing and jingle bells ring
Snowin' and blowin' up bushels of fun
Now the jingle hop has begun
Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock
Jingle bells chime in jingle bell time
Dancin' and prancin' in Jingle Bell Square
In the frosty air
What a bright time, it's the right time
To rock the night away
Jingle bell time is a swell time
To go glidin' in a one-horse sleigh
Giddy-up jingle horse, pick up your feet
Jingle around the clock
Mix and a-mingle in the jinglin' beat
That's the jingle bell rock
Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock
Jingle bells chime in jingle bell time
Dancin' and prancin' in Jingle Bell Square

To rock the night away
Jingle bell time is a swell time
To go glidin' in a one-horse sleigh
Giddy-up jingle horse, pick up thosefeet
Jingle around the clock
Mix and a-mingle in the jinglin' beat
That's the jingle bell
That's the jingle bell
That's the jingle bell rock

RUN RUN RUDOLPH LYRICS
Ah Rudolph, you ready to rock
Hey run run Rudolph, Santa’s gotta make it town
Well, can’t you make him hurry
Tell him he can take the freeway down
Oh, run run Rudolph whizzing like a merry-go-round
Well Santa said to a boy, child, what have you been longing for?
He said all I want for Christmas is a rock and roll electric guitar
Then away went Rudolph whizzing like a shooting star
Oh, run, run, Rudolph, Santa’s gotta to make it to town
Well, can’t you make him hurry
Tell him he can take the freeway down
Oh, run run Rudolph whizzing like a merry go round
Well, Santa said to a girl, child, what would you like most to get?”
She said I want a baby doll that can cry, sleep, drink, oh yeah
And then away went Rudolph, whizzing like a Sabre jet
Run, run, Rudolph, Santa’s gotta make it to town
Well, can’t you make him hurry
Tell him he can take the freeway down
Oh, run, run, Rudolph, whizzing like a merry-go-round
Run, run, Rudolph, Santa’s gotta make it to town
Well, can’t you make him hurry
Tell him he can take the freeway down
Oh, run, run, Rudolph, whizzing like a merry-go-round
I said run, run Rudolph whizzing like a merry-go-round
I said run, run Rudolph whizzing like a merry-go-round
I said run, run Rudolph, take the freeway down
