Events Galore in edition 116 Welcome to another edition of Jack Hi. Bowls events dominate this edition of Jack Hi with some real high lights including the fabulous Australian Fours win by the super side of Helen Morss, Therese Hastings, Robyn O’Brien and Laura Merz (page 12) along with wraps on the State Pairs and Triples plus the Dyenamic Masters Series and an unforgettable State Singles effort of Blake Butler (page 21).

Shortly after the release of this issue BPL09 will be on our screens with our very own Perth Suns looking to again be in finals calculations. A preview and the Suns schedule of play can be found on page 24.

Definitely worth a read in this issue is the story of Lake Monger Recreation Club who have reaped the rewards of diversification in recent months – it’s a real success story and shows how clubs can capitalise on areas away from bowls.

New Bowls Website up and running The new Bowls Link is progressing on target, with the Bowls WA website introduced in November.

With the website easier to navigate, the website is purposed to encompass the clubs and the drive to engage new membership.We look forward to the next stage, with the Membership and Competition modules due in the coming months. A feature will be its ease of use and availability on tablet and smartphone.

Many of our clubs are embracing a new look website.

Official of the Year Award to Sue Hogg Congratulations to Sue Hogg who was presented with the Official of the Year Award at the BA Awards night in October.

Sue spends many hours officiating, both here in WA and at national events and this was a fitting reward for her dedication to the sport.

Vale Beryl Brennan The Association was saddened by the passing of our Vice Patron Beryl Brennan in November.

Beryl was one of the great administrators of the game, both in this State and nationally.

A former State and National President, Beryl was instrumental in the national unification of the men’s and women’s associations, and extended her resume to the international scene on the World Bowls Council. We will miss her smiling face.

Change of Constitution supported The Special Meeting on December 8, resulted in the clubs supporting the motion to change the Constitution, to enable Bowls WA to change the way the Affiliation Fee is applied.

I thank the Affiliation Fee Review Committee for their time and effort in establishing the fair and equitable new system for applying the Fee to clubs.

Governor Beazley new Bowls WA Patron I am pleased to announce that the Governor of WA, Kim Beazley has agreed to become the Patron of Bowls WA.

Funding for 'Winning Drive' Program Aaron Delaporte and the Club Development committee have been successful in attaining funding for a Winning Drive program. This is a significant boost in BWA endeavours to support our clubs.

The program provides bowling clubs in WA with programs, resources and tools to become healthy and sustainable clubs.

BWA has been able to appoint an additional staff member, Kaitlin Tyrell through the AFL SportsReady program to coordinate the program.

Strong Performances on the Greens There have been strong performances on the greens over the past few months.

The women’s Over 60s team brought home a silver medal; the Perth Suns raised the bar to take 4th place in the BPL; Helen Morss, Therese Hastings, Robin O’Brien and Lara Merz returned from the Australian Championships at Merimbula with medals; Kaye Blackwell with daughter Donna won the women’s State Pairs- the first mother/daughter combination to do so; Hayden Smith from York continued the run of family success winning the State Pairs with Phil Jones; Daniel Brown, Daniel Trewhella and Shane Loftus produced excellent bowls to win the State Triples whilst earlier in the season Clive Adams and his team of Cameron Harris with Ross and Luke Bolton claimed success in the State Fours. Bowls WA appreciates the support of Dyenamic Sublimation, sponsors of BWA State events.

Halfway through Pennant Season The pennant season has passed the half way mark already – how quickly the season flies! We have a lot to look forward to with Country Week, another BPL, the Side Series, and more State events all to come.

Weather playing a role in competition The Christmas break has come and gone and we are well and truly into the make or break time of the pennant season. In addition the state fours, triples and pairs have been run and won and as I write the state singles is only a few days away, although the weather may have a say in that.

We have been reasonably fortunate with the weather so far, although the seasons do appear to be a month later nowadays, so the genuine heat is perhaps still around the corner.

Country Week entries are being tallied and it appears that they have held up quite well and like the state events continue to attract great interest. Couple these with the popular Over 60s events and more recently the Dyenamic Masters Series and more and more players are opting to play one or more 'representative' events during the year.

(L) 78 77 75 75 It was unfortunate that this season we had to move the Triples to a date just prior to Christmas due to a national clash, but that should be rectified in 2019/20 and improve entries.

Bowls 2025 Committee The opportunity to have your say on the future structure of the metropolitan pennant competitions is at hand.

Information has been forwarded to all metropolitan club secretaries to share with their members to offer ideas or proposals on where you would like the pennant game or other events outside the box to head.

We often hear great ideas around the bar after a pennant game but rarely is that put into words when the opportunity arises!

This is your chance to be heard with submissions being taken by the Bowls 2025 Committee until the end of February. Your Club Secretary will have details on the process.

BCiB legends to visit Country Week As part of their generous support of Country Week, BCiB ambassador and bowls legend Karen Murphy will be in Perth for Ladies Country Week and most particularly the time honoured Country vs Metro clash on 24th March.

In addition BCiB Chief Operating Officer Brett Duprez, himself a Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist (Kuala Lumpur 1998 Pairs) will formerly open Men’s Country Week at the Country vs State Squad clash on 28th February.

Both Karen and Brett will spend a few days in Perth meeting with club executives and catching plenty of country bowls – we look forward to providing Karen and Brett with some WA hospitality during their visit.

We may even persuade them to play a few ends!

Changes to the National calendar It is likely that the proposed change to the national events calendar will occur for the 2020 season. These changes will see the majority of national events (excl Aus Open) to an October 2020 date. The proposal will affect team’s events in the Under 18s, Sides Series and Over 60s in addition to Australian Championships and Champion of Champions events. The Festival of Bowls would be held over a two-week period in a venue to be confirmed by Bowls Australia, but what it will mean is that the scheduled April Sides Series in NSW will be the last of the Round Robin format. Further there will be a break between Series from April 2019 to October 2020 when the new structure will kick in.

In this time Bowls WA will undertake a complete review of its High Performance program, including the current model of coaches, selectors and managers for the various teams/ events. Given the continuous scheduling at the same venue greater efficiencies should be available in personnel tasked with looking after Sides. This review has commenced and will report to the Board in the latter months of 2019.

Club Affiliation changes passed As most club executives will be aware the changes to the club affiliation method of calculation were passed at a Special General Meeting in early December.

This will see a change whereby clubs will be charged based on their pennant sides relative to the other clubs in either the country or metro areas.

Some affiliations will increase some will decrease but, in all cases, they will be based on the pennant sides you have rather than a fictitious membership number based on previous years.

Importantly however clubs will be required to have their pennant nominations locked in with Bowls WA or their Country League by 15th September each year to enable affiliation calculations to be completed.

Striving for Personal Achievement from Grass Root Inclusion Programs to National Events…

2019 All Ability Championships Originally called Multi-Disability Championships, the re-named All Ability Championships will be held at Kardinya Bowling Club over the weekend of March 2 and 3. This fantastic event combines players of different disabilities in one competition, where numbers are small categories may be combined for a unique event experience!

The All Ability event will consist of four entry categories: • Hearing Impaired/Deaf • Intellectual • Physical • Vision Impaired/Blind.

This competition consists of Singles and Pairs over the weekend – players can nominate their pairs partner, or they will be matched up by the Inclusion Committee.

• 2018 All Ability State Championships.

Bowling Arm State Singles Championship In 2018 the All Ability event hosted a separate category specific to Bowling Arms – due to the high number of entries in 2019 the Bowling Arm category will have its own event – the Bowling Arm State Singles Championship. Warnbro Bowling Club are excited to host this inaugural event mid-week on May 1and 2.

This event is open to any bowler who plays with a Bowling Arm and will also be part of the selection process for those interested in being selected for the 2019 National Bowling Arm Challenge that will be held in Tranmere South Australia in September.

Practices for players interested in vying for a position on the Sandgroper State Representative Side have started.

Club responsibilities and Officiating It seems that no matter how much effort is put in to conducting Umpires courses, including running supplementary sessions in addition to the two usually scheduled series of courses (four in all) in Northern and Southern Metropolitan venues, some club committees and/or members seem unable or reluctant to put forward candidates to meet their Pennant commitments.

These clubs are frequently incapable of providing the requisite home-game Umpires and ignore the relevant conditions of play by not asking visiting team/s if they have an accredited Umpire to appoint as Umpire of the Day. In cases where the Home Club does not do so and a measure or decision is required and it is made by an unqualified person, the visiting team can call for any accredited Umpire, if present, if they believe the decision was flawed.

Marking standards – The Umpires course format introduced in 2015 has seen a gradual improvement in the standard of Marking in singles games, however there is considerable room for improvement, as witnessed at some of the sectional play in the recent State Singles. These early rounds are played as sections of three players with the person not playing, doing the marking.

Marking is almost as crucial to the game as actual play and, in particular at the early rounds, it would bode well if the marker adopted the policy of trying to meet the proper requirements of the role by taking it seriously. 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you' would be a good starting point as the marker will be the player in two of the sectional games! If the players don't take the role, which is really an integral part of the game, seriously – why do they enter the competition? There are rules to follow and these are there for their benefit as well as the benefit of the game as a whole.

Basic rules require the Marker to be on the rink all the time (except when required to change the scoreboard) standing approximately 2m behind and 1m to the shadow-side; be prepared and mark all touchers; be alert to drives and step forward as a drive is released so that they can see the consequence of bowls and jack scattering so as to determine

whether a bowl is 'live' (is it a toucher, or are previous touchers involved, etc.) and if the jack left the rink of play, as well as avoiding the possibility of the Marker displacing the jack or bowl/s by being unable to avoid being hit by them.

This is just one example of the duties of a Marker – Players entering Singles competitions at both Club and State championship levels in particular, should make themselves aware of those duties by reading Law 42 or asking a respected, qualified Umpire and/or watching properly staged Singles matches where known, good marking practices are followed.

It does make the game more pleasant for all, engendering good sportsmanship and an event that improves the spectator experience.

Temperature issues – The heat rules introduced were done so for the health and safety of players across the whole range of ages that our sport provides for.

It is not optional, under our Conditions of Play, whether to apply the rule or not when the temperature has been reached for suspending the game or abandoning if the maximum accumulated time has elapsed.

However it is reasonable to allow individual ends to be completed if the Umpire calls everybody off, as to allow a potential overall result in pennants, as unlike rain which has an instant effect which may require abandoning ends.

Umpires should well acquaint themselves with the rules on stoppages in Law 32 Game Stoppages.

Did you know: • Law 14.4 – Touchers in the ditch must be marked by a brightly coloured indicator not more than 50 mm wide and not more than 100 mm high, and which is fixed vertically either against the face of the bank or on top of the bank.

This is in addition to a white indicator for a jack in the ditch. All clubs should have both these white and coloured markers readily accessible to place when necessary.

• A player deliberately measures the distance between the jack and some bowls by placing a foot between the jack and the bowls before the skip delivers the bowl. The opponent objects to this – What is the position?

• Law 23.3 – No measuring (that is, the use of equipment, such as that described in law 54, placed between the jack and bowls to decide which bowls are shot) will be allowed before the process of deciding the number of shots scored starts (as described in law 23.1).

If a player measures before the process of deciding the number of shots scored starts, the defaulting team will lose the right to play any bowls remaining to be played in that end and the non-defaulting team will deliver their remaining bowls to complete the end.

Good luck to Pennant finalists Welcome to another year of bowling. I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and hope the new year brings success to you all.

ILRRs A first for Mens ILRR’s, the Central Wheatbelt League hosted the Eastern Zone ILRR at Manning Bowling Club.

I attended the Friday afternoon games and saw some high quality bowling. It was decided to hold the ILRR at Manning as there is no venue that can cater for the number of bowlers in the Central Wheatbelt League and this gave the League a chance to run the competition.

Congratulations to Des Miguel and his helpers. Congratulations to the players who were picked in the IZRR to be played at Emu Point Bowling club.

I attended the South West Zone ILRR on the 12th and 13th February at Donnybrook. I would like to congratulate the Blackwood league and Donnybrook Bowling Club for a well run Round Robin.

I attended the South West Ladies ILRR Pairs on the 21st and 22nd November at Harvey Bowling Club.

Congratulations to Harvey BC for a well run competition.

New Affiliation Fees The new affiliation model was passed at a special meeting in early December.

After a couple of years of working out a fairer way of collecting affiliation fees, the new fee structure will be based on pennant teams nominated each year by 1st October.

Country Week Country Week is quickly approaching and I wish all the players who have nominated for the three competitions an enjoyable week and good fellowship.

I’ll take this opportunity to congratulate all the players who have been picked in the Men’s All Stars to play the Men’s State Squad and the Women’s Country verses Metro to be played prior to country week.

Congratulations to Russell Bates on Everest win Congratulations to Russell Tyrell and his helpers at Dudley Park for another successful Everest.

A larger field nominated this year and congratulations to local player Russell Bates on being the winner.

State Pairs Success Well done to Haydn Smith and Phil Jones on their win in the State Pairs. York Bowling Club should feel proud that the State Pairs winners have come from their club in the last two years with Hadyn’s sons Aaron and Nathan winning it last year.

Also well done to Debbie Smith and Bev Davidson from Kukerin who were runners up in Ladies State Pairs.

A First for the Australian Deaf team in 32 years The Deaf games were held early in the year and I would like to congratulate Kate Leese from Binningup Bowling Club for being selected in the Australian team.

The Australian team won the overall trophy for the first time in 32 years, with Kate winning a gold medal in the fours and silver in the triples.

Australian Championships at Merimbula This year Merimbula was the venue for the Australian Championships with Warren Holt from Wagin competing in the Singles event.

Things didn’t go his way but thank you for making yourself available. Also Warren, and Bev Scott from Capel, competed in the Champion of Champions event in Kingborough Tasmania in October.

Pennant Season nears end The Pennant season is coming to a close in most Leagues and I wish the Clubs who have qualified for finals, a great finals series and good bowling for the rest of the season.

Fathering Project a success at Byford

Getting new people along for a taste of what bowls is, is the key to getting new members into the club.

Whether they join immediately, in 6 months, 6 years or even longer a good initial impression of the sport and your club may eventually see people return to the game when the circumstances are right for them.

Recently Byford Bowling Club in partnership with the Parkerville Children's and Youth Centre Fathering Project were able to host a very successful afternoon of bowls for fathers and their children.

David Walker of Parkerville Children's and Youth Centre Coordinator of the Fathering Project commented on their very successful bowls day at Byford Bowling Club.

"As part of the Fathering Projects work within the community, an event was held at the Byford Bowls Club for father and fatherfigures of Byford Primary School. The sunset lawn bowls was attended by 13 father or father-figures and 25 children. It was an opportunity for dads, to not just play bowls, but to give their child the gift of 'time'. Memory making requires a sacrifice, but the benefits are far reaching. We had great support from the local bowls club with lots of encouraging coaching”.

Congratulations to Byford Bowls Club on this partnership which exposed the sport of bowls to another 38 prospective lawn bowlers.

Massive milestone for David Croft

by Aaron Delaporte Mount Lawley Bowling Club Life Member David Croft recently played his 1000th pennant game for the club. David joined Mt Lawley in 1991 and joins an illustrious group of bowlers who have played in excess of 1000 games for Mount Lawley.

In David’s time at the club he has been Treasurer (2 years) and Men’s Captain (3 years) and a Selector (10 years). A qualified Umpire David is rarely wrong when giving an assessment of the shot bowl before any measuring equipment is used in adjudication.

His knowledge of the rules is first rate.

David is well known in pennant circles and has been involved in the administration of the Mount Lawley Consistency Singles Men’s and Ladies competitions for close to 20 years. He’s involved in the planning, recording of entries, competition draws and playing days administration. David is unique in today’s age by using a fountain pen to write up the cards for each day of the events.

David has been the Singles Champion 3 times, Pairs Champion 4 times, Triples Champion 6 times and Fours Champion 8 times with his victories spread right through his time at the club.

David currently plays in 3rd Division on both Thursday’s and Saturday’s and he and his team are in great form. At the of going to print David leads the Saturday’s Skippers table having won 10 out of 10 games in the 2018/19 season.

• David receives his 1000th game cap.

David is an avid Bridge player and theatre patron when away from the bowling green.

He is also a renowned amateur chef and has a strong following at the club when he puts on his famous ‘Crofty Curry’ nights. On reaching the milestone David was presented with a club cap embroided with his name and ‘1000 Games’.

Super Side continue Super Run

by Cameron Harris The Manning foursome of Helen Morss, Therese Hastings, Robyn O’Brien and Laura Merz are Australian fours champions.

They defeated South Australia’s Fiona McGregor, Anne Onto, Chris Keller and Barbara Maiden 16-7 with an end to spare to clinch the title at Club Sapphire on Wednesday December 5th 2018.

Things may have been very different though if not for a couple of big conversions in the first two ends.

Down a number on the first end Morss flopped off a bowl for second shot and followed it up on the next end by raking for a piece of the jack when down another count of three or four.

It was 1-1 after two ends but could very easily have been in the region 0-8 if not for the results of those bowls.

From there the WA ladies found there groove going out to 5-1 before being closed down again at 5-5 after seven of the fifteen ends.

They got back to their rhythm quickly and took the lead out to 10-6 with just four ends to play.

It was on the 12th end that WA broke the game open.

Holding four shots they watched McGregor sail through the head playing weight to take a 14-6 lead into the final few ends of the game.

The South Australians weren’t done though and held three with two bowls to come on the next end, a potential way back in. Having just driven with her first Morss was forced back to the draw for her second and drew shot.

They were nervy moments as McGregor’s came down whoever she sat her teammates bowl to get shot but was only half a bowl away from sitting Morss’s for four.

With the score 14-7 the Manning girls needed two shots to ice the contest there and then.

It was O’Brien who stepped up to draw shot a couple down to an off-centred jack .

From there nothing much changed until the final couple of bowls with WA holding one but surrounded by opposition bowls.

After a couple of goes with weight McGregor couldn’t get O’Brien’s bowl out of the head.

This left with Morss with an opportunity with her last that she duly took to seal the game at 16-7 by drawing another.

It was a very good week for the Manning ladies in Merimbula, especially for O’Brien and Merz who also picked up silver in the triples on Monday with Kristina Krstic. Krstic also took bronze in the Women’s Singles.

Men’s State Pairs

Men s Pairs trophy staying in York

by Cameron Harris York’s Haydn Smith and Phil Jones have become the first all York team to win a state event taking out the Dyenamic Men’s State Pairs.

They take over from Haydn’s sons and fellow York products Aaron and Nathan who were classed as a composite team due to Nathan’s membership at Bassendean.

They defeated Wanneroo’s in-form pair of Steve Fewster and Peter Flack fresh off finishing equal third in the state triples.

The final was played in tough, blustery conditions at Osborne Park but the players adjusted well to put on a high quality show for spectators both at the venue and watching via Bowls WA Facebook live stream.

The York boys had the better of the first part of the game winning seven of the first nine ends.

They were primarily scoring ones and twos but a three on the ninth gave them something of a buffer at 11-6.

Fewster and Flack were still in the hunt though, mostly thanks to a four which gave them a decent score.

Over the next few ends the Roos started to work themselves into the game by scoring another four followed by a double two ends later.

Smith and Jones were still doing enough to maintain their slender advantage with solid draw play a highlight of their game to that point.

With four ends to go the Wanneroo lads began to really threaten for the first time in the game, They scored three consecutive singles to trail 16-15 heading into the last end.

York were in the not disastrous position of just needing to win the end with last bowl but were perhaps in a worse position than they thought they might be an hour earlier.

They held shot for most of the end, albeit with plenty of room, until Fewster drew shot a foot and a half short with his last bowl to potentially force an extra end.

Smith stepped up with the last bowl in his hand needing to draw shot to clinch the title and draw shot he did.

No York player had ever won a men’s or women’s state event until 12 months ago and now the Dyenamic Men’s State Pairs trophy will reside in York for back to back years.

It caps off an amazing year, to the day, for the Smith Family with Haydn (father), Nathan and Aaron (sons) winning state pairs titles, Justin (son) winning the Country Week Singles, Sian (mother) making the women’s state squad and Emma (daughter) making the WA under 18’s team.

Blackwell s keep success in the family

by Cameron Harris Kaye and Donna Blackwell have won the Dyenamic Women’s State Pairs in hot conditions on Friday 14th December 2018.

They defeated Kukerin’s Bev Davidson and Debbie Smith 15-14 in a final end thriller at Osborne Park.

It was a game of few up shots but it was an outstanding display of draw bowls throughout the game with some key bowls played.

The Kukerin pair had the better start with four shots in the first three ends before a four to the Blackwell’s undid that work on the fourth to level the scores.

It stayed very close for a few ends before a couple of big bowls stopped the match from breaking open.

At 6-6 after six ends Blackwell was down three before trailing bare jack to get a lot more room, ultimately dropping a single shot on the end. On the very next end Blackwell again trailed the jack three or four down and made two shots. This gave them the lead 8-7 after eight ends instead of the 6-13 down they could have been.

As the game wore on the standard continued to increase with the country girls rising to the occasion and Donna Blackwell lifting to match the standard of the game. A two on the eighth end started a Blackwell run that got them a 13-7 lead with six ends left.

This was where Davidson and Smith really came to the fore as they dug deep to get themselves back in it for the last third of the game. In the next five ends they scored seven shots to one.

This meant the match entered its final stanza dead level at 14-14 with a winner take all final 18th end to finish the game.

Donna nailed the jack with her first bowl which stayed shot most of the end.

Trying to sit the shot Davidson turned up another Blackwell bowl onto the jack to force her to try and kill the end with her last. She got a bowl out but not the jack and the Blackwell’s hung onto one shot to win the match.

It was a terrific performance from the Kukerin ladies who had a huge amount of country support behind them despite playing at a club with just five lady members.

However the Blackwell’s certainly earnt their title having beaten 2017 winners and 2018 runner-ups Kristina Krstic and Laura Merz in knockout play and four times champions Noelene Abe and Kerry Andersen in the semi-final.

This is Kaye Blackwell’s second open age state title and Donna’s first. Kaye’s last title was the fours in the 1996/97 season making it a long time between drinks. The Blackwell’s are the first known mother/daughter combination to win the event.

Women’s State Triples

Early Christmas for Featherby s three

by Cameron Harris The 2018 Women’s State Triples has been completed with Lisa Featherby, Shari Solly and Linda Warburton winning the competition. They defeated Liz Brooke, Kerry Stephens and Toni Gatti 18-11 in the final at Bassendean Bowling Club.

It was a couple of numbers that not only kept them in the game but gave them the lead two thirds of the way through.

Consistency was also a feature of Featherby’s side who did not allow Brooke to score more than two on any given end.

After two a piece on the first two ends Featherby opened the game with the first of two fours she would score during the match. She followed it up with another two to hold an early 8-2 lead. Brooke responded by winning the next five ends but they were all ones which meant she was still behind 8-7 at the halfway mark despite winning two thirds of the ends.

Featherby snapped the streak with a single and then a second four re-established her sides hold over the match, giving them a six shot lead.

The second half of the game belonged to Featherby’s who continued to pick up small scores and only allowed Brooke to win two ends. One of them would turn out to be the last.

With Brooke needing three to force a final end her side could only get two and Featherby’s crew run out victors 18-11 with an end to spare.

It's the second triples title for both Featherby and Warburton having also won their previous one together in 2012.

It's a first triples and surprisingly a first state title in any discipline for Solly who is finally off the mark in that regard.

Men’s State Triples

Victorious triple bring on the heat

by Cameron Harris Daniel Brown, Daniel Trewhella and Shane Loftus are the 2018 Dyenamic Men’s State Triples Champions adding to their ever growing list of titles.

They defeated the in-form South Perth side of Neale Griffin, Mitch Biglin and Farley Anderson 19-10 in the final at Bassendean Bowling Club.

It wasn’t a game of big numbers but instead it was the weight of the number of ends won that got Brown across the line.

His side won 11 of the 17 ends played including the first five which gave them a great head start.

From there all they had to do was make sure they didn’t concede anything silly and the title was always likely to be theirs from that point.

Courtesy of a three on the third end Brown held a 7-0 lead at the end of the fifth.

Griffin picked up a two and a one in succession but a four to Brown put his side back in control.

That four was the catalyst for another run, this one lasting four ends, which put Brown up 15-3 with seven more ends scheduled.

Griffin was able to win four of the next five ends but were denied the numbers they needed, only managing ones and two's.

• Shane Loftus, Daniel Brown and Daniel Trewhella.

After 16 ends the score read 18-10 to Brown meaning Griffin needed another two just to force the game to its final end.

As it was it was Brown who picked up shot on the end and wrapped up the title on end early at 19-10.

That makes six titles won by Brown and Trewhella together and a second with Loftus in the team following last years fours.

This marks a third triples title for Brown, a second for Trewhella and a first triples crown for Loftus.

Coaching Courses

Club Coaches bring unity to Bullsbrook

Bowls WA offers a series of Club Coach courses over the non-Pennant metropolitan calendar year.

This course is ideally suited to coaches regularly working at club level, either coaching a team or coaching an individual. Amongst a range of other knowledge and skill components, the course covers a broad range of general coaching theories and specific bowls content, including: • Conduct a coaching session to teach skills and tactics • Identify appropriate delivery options to place bowl smoothly on running surface • Identify appropriate drills for shot development • Apply technique analysis to provide appropriate feedback • Identify the correlation between line and weight and the impact of environmental conditions • Implement inclusive activities for the coaching of bowls • Identify physical growth and development considerations • Identify the specific responsibilities of lead, second, third and skip • Assist athletes with basic nutritional strategies for sports performance • Demonstrate effective communication strategies Individuals who take the Club Coach course receive a card showing their Coach Certification, when possible these cards are presented in person to the participants to enhance the use of the coach’s skill sets to other club members. In 2018 Bullsbrook Bowling Club were appreciative that Bowls WA Club Coach Coordinator, Brian Clausen, was able to take time out of his own 'bowling time' to personally present coaching certificates to Bullsbrook club members.

Immediately noticeable from this presentation was the pride and prestige given to the members who achieved this qualification. Via Brian’s actions, these members immediately took ownership and came up with skills sessions during the week and Saturday mornings. For the first time in Bullsbrook President, Carol de Jager, four years at the club regular skill sessions are available.

Bullsbrook is experiencing huge growth in membership with almost 80% more members and they all find the coaching valuable.

Carol wanted to ensure that hers, and the clubs, thanks was forwarded to Brian and his team – we at Bowls WA couldn’t think of a better way to do that than with an article in Jack Hi. 16

Firies Carnival to be played in March The 23rd Australasian Fire Services Bowls Carnival more commonly known as the ‘Firies’ carnival is being jointly held at the Halls Head and Port Bouvard Bowling Clubs from March 3-8th 2019. There will be approx 100 bowlers and 60 partners attending from New Zealand and various Australian states. The last carnival, which is held every 18 months, was at Tweed Heads in October 2017.

The welcome function will be held on Saturday 2 March at the Halls Head Bowling Club. The competition runs daily through to the wind up/presentation function on Friday 8 March. There will be singles, pairs and fours games spread between the 2 clubs over the week with the finals being played on Friday afternoon.

Members of the public are invited to come along and see our ‘Firies’ in action and renew old friendships. The City of Mandurah will benefit substantially especially with regard to tourism and related businesses.

Masters Series Wrap

Dyenamic Series reveals the best The opening events in the Inaugural Dyenamic Masters Series have been run and won and not surprisingly some high profile names have come away as winners.

The Dyenamic Masters Series is a series of eight Masters Events on the WA Bowls Calendar which gives players not only the chance to compete for Australian and State Ranking Points but also the chance to win great prizemoney in each event along with the series prizemoney of $1000. This will be awarded to the best male and female player over the course of the season courtesy • Bassendean Masters Triples Champions: of Dyenamic Bowls Uniforms. The champion bowlers will also Lee Such, John Slavich, Simon Alden (Tournament Director) be awarded an AERO Bowls World sponsored set of bowls, bag and Steve Collings. and shoes.

The opening event played in November saw a very strong capacity field of 32 teams revitalising the Masters Triples which hasn’t been run in WA for over 15 years.

The champions with skipper John Slavich who bowled brilliantly and was ably assisted by Steve Collins and Lee Such to get through a strong section then defeated quality rinks in the finals skipped by Cody Packer 19-6, Neville Stevens 19-14 and Perth Suns team mate Shane Knott 13-9 in the final.

The final was a very low scoring affair until Shane Knott with Anthony Williams and Beau Manton who was subbing for an injured Kyle McIlroy hit the lead 8-7 with a terrific three. However Slavich’s team immediately answered when Slavich played a small trail then drew another to grab back the lead 10-8 with a three of their own. After that they held steady with good consistent play eventually closing out the match dropping only one further end with a final score of 13-9. Next up was the Osborne Park Men’s Masters Singles in December where Manning’s Shane Knott went one better to claim this title with some outstanding play • Mens Masters Singles Finalists: in a field of 64 players. He defeated team Alan Pryce and Shane Knott. mate Alan Pryce 25-13 in the final.

Pryce had proved a giant killer in the event with his terrific draw shots over coming State Singles champions Blake Nairn and John Slavich in consecutive rounds of knock out play leading up to his semi-final where he overcame Cockburn’s Willie TePania 2521. Likewise Knott defeated some quality opponents on his way to the title including Travis Leahy, Stewart Gosstray and Grant Nicol before an epic semi-final against fellow state team member Matt Mitchell 25-18. Knott was outstanding through out the event with an impressive display of draw bowls and great conversions with his weighted • Womens Masters Pairs Champions: shots. The first Women’s event was the North Beach Ladies Masters Pairs which Helen Heal and Kristina Krstic. included increased prizemoney and a good quality field of 44 teams.

Kristina Krstic made it a hat-trick of Perth Suns team mates taking out the titles when she combined with Helen Heal to win the event. Played in January through very blustery winds the ladies made a mockery of conditions as they continually peppered the jack in what was a dominant display.

Krstic and Heal were rarely troubled in the later stage of the event breezing through their quarter final 22-3 before defeating Bev Baker and Liz Matthews 25-5 in the semi-final and backing that up with a 26-9 win over Angela Sharp and Kathy Gobbart in the final. This was the second title for both Krstic and Heal but the first as team mates.

The Doubleview Men’s Masters Pairs and Mosman Park Ladies Masters Singles are next on the Masters Series calendar before the Doubleview Masters Fours, Mixed Masters Pairs and Osborne Park Ladies Masters Triples round out the events for the year.

Letter to the Editor

Des delivers with new bionic arm My name is Des Parr and I am a member of the Kalamunda Bowling Club.

I am 84 years old and have been playing lawn bowls for approximately 60 years.

In that time I have never won a club championship of any kind until recently when the highlight of my career in bowls was achieved, along with two of my fellow members, namely Milan Jokic and David Guy we were successful in winning our club triples championship.

Apart from my winning my first ever club championship what made the win more memorable was that two years ago because of the usual aging health issues I gave the game away as I did not want to be banned for dumping.

About nine months ago my friend Dave Guy pestered me to get back into the game by purchasing a ‘Bionic Arm’.

In June this year I bit the bullet and bought one.

Up until about four weeks ago I was having doubts about the purchase as I was having occasional trouble with some of my deliveries especially on slower greens.

I changed my delivery action and although still not perfect I have turned the corner.

We have three other players in our club using these arms so I have the distinction of being the first in our club to win a championship using a bionic arm.

Editor’s Reply: Great stuff Des!! I hope your story inspires others to keep bowling through the aid of a bionic arm.

O60s Championships , Men s – O60s Triples

South Perth takeover 60s Triples title

by Cameron Harris The South Perth side Mick McRae, David Mortley and Farley Anderson are the new State Over 60 Men’s Triples champions winning the tournament at Bassendean on Wednesday November 28th 2018.

They defeated locals Rod Revell, Ted Alden and Norm Kirkup 19-13 in a match decided by the middle third of the game.

The game was level at six after the first five ends but over the course of the next eight ends the South Perth boys would put the game to bed. They won seven of those ends and scored twelve shots to one to give themselves a commanding 18-7 lead. They didn’t have to do anything fancy, scoring no more than two on any of those ends, but it was the sheer weight of ends won that would eventually add up.

Bassendean did break the run with a three to keep things alive but McRae’s side did what they had to do and didn’t allow another score above one for the game.

Three ones on the spin followed the three for Revell and meant that at 18-13 going into the last end the match was still live. However the Millers made sure of things with a one of their own in the final stanza to claim victory 19-13.

It was a campaign of close calls with the six shot win being McRae’s biggest since sectional play.

They barely held on to win their semi-final over Steve O’Neill by one and won their other two knockout games by just three.

It’s the first Over 60’s title for McRae, Mortley and Anderson and the first won by a South Perth side since the pairs in 2011/12.

, Women s – O60s Triples

Tight game specialists hold defending champs

by Cameron Harris The final of the Over 60 Women’s State Triples was played at Wanneroo Bowling Club on Friday morning November 30th 2018.

The composite team of Bev Baker, Irene Arndt and Liz Marshall were victorious 15-12 over Noelene Abe, Liz Matthews and Sue Hogg who were looking for back to back titles.

It was a high standard game with skipper Baker playing particularly well.

The two sides got to the final in very different fashions.

Abe looked the in form side with only one of their wins being less than six shots whereas Baker had a draw in sectional play and had won all three knockout games by one shot.

But it was Baker who got off to a great start in the match and it was enough as her side held on despite a late charge from Abe. Baker won five of the first six ends to lead 8-2 and would not relinquish the lead at any point in the match.

Abe’s side were just never able to to get any closer than four shots as they were not allowed to score on consecutive ends at any point in the game.

One of the game’s biggest moments came at the end of the 17th end when Abe and her side looked set to finally score on back to back ends as they held two with one bowl to come from Baker.

The score was 14-10 and a two to Abe would have made the last end very nervy.

However Baker played a bomb to sit the shot bowl and score shot meaning Abe needed five shots for an extra end rather than three.

Abe’s side could only manage two and Baker, Arndt and Marshall were champions.

It’s Marshall’s first Over 60’s title while Arndt and Baker both continue strong form from last year having both won either an Over 60’s or open event.

Caffell brothers overcome setback to win title

by Cameron Harris Brothers Gary and Pat Caffell are the 2018 Over 60’s Men’s Pairs Champions winning the final at Dalkeith Nedlands on Wednesday November 14th 2018..

They defeated Fremantle’s James Stewart and Keith Bowden 23-9 in a dominant display in the final.

The victory comes just over two weeks after Pat was forced to withdraw from the semi-final of the State Fours due to health issues.

The Caffells no doubt would have been the sentimental favourites for many given the circumstances around their victory.

They had a very tough road in the knockout stages playing a number of good players.

Peter Cole and Frank Carbone were their opening two knockout opponents and have been very solid Premier League players in past years.

, Women s – O60s Pairs

• Gary and Pat Caffell.

They also faced over 60’s state skippers Graham Evans and Chris Lander in the quarter and semi finals.

That is as tough a run as you could ever hope for in an over 60’s event but the brothers proved themselves worthy winners by getting through it.

Stewart and Bowden didn’t have an easy run themselves having to account for 2011/12 winners Geoff White and Greg Reagan.

It is the third Over 60’s title for both Gary and Pat and their second together following their triples win last season.

North Beach s clean sweep to title

by Aaron Delaporte The North Beach duo of Rhonda Prosser and Debra Rhine are the 2018 Women’s Over 60’s Pairs champions after they over powered the Sorrento team of Robyn Van Mosseveld and Pauline Bourne in a high quality final 17-13 at Osborne Park Bowling Club Friday 16th November.

The North Beach duo probably had the title the furthest thing from their mind after a 20-11 defeat in the opening sectional match against Leeman’s Sandra Trenowden and Chris Lewis however they had two convincing wins in their remaining sectional matches to take the section. They were able to continue that great form all the way through to the final. In the semi-final the North Beach pair claimed the scalp of last year’s winner Kerry Andersen and Thornlie partner Maureen Cooney in a strong 17-12 win whilst the Sorrento team claimed an unbelievable win to progress.

Playing a strong pair in Helen Hutton and the two-time Over 60’s bowler of the Year Irene Arndt they lead 21-0 after 14 of the scheduled 18 ends. The opposition claimed a one on the next end to prevent the clean sheet and then promptly shook hands to concede defeat with the margin too great to overcome.

After a tight early tussle in the final the North Beach team pick up a score of 3 to edge clear with a 6 shot margin at the half way mark. They were able to hold that margin to the finish despite dropping a couple of shots on the last few ends. Both teams had their moments with all four players in good form however North Beach just had the edge as the final score-line 17-13 reflected.

This is the first Over 60’s state title for either of the North Beach ladies who were naturally delighted with the win.

Men’s State Singles

Butler victorious in marathon final

by Cameron Harris Blake Butler is the 2019 Dyenamic Men’s State Singles Champion winning the title at Yokine Bowling Club.

He defeated Daniel Trewhella 25-23 in a terrific final watched by over 500 people between those at the venue and those watching the live stream.

Both men had experience in State Singles finals, Butler being the 2009 New South Wales singles runner up and Trewhella coming second in WA in 2006.

Trewhella was the first to settle and looked good value for his early 7-3 lead, drawing and hitting well in the early part of the game. All of a sudden the game turned as Butler picked up four shots to cancel out all Trewhella’s good work.

When he had the mat Butler’s first bowl was often good throughout the match and he worked his way to a 13-9 lead, a 10-2 swing from where he had been before his maximum.

Trewhella went on his own four end run, taking advantage of Butler giving shot away by going with a longer length to take the lead before Butler levelled the game at 14-14. At this point there had already been seven dead ends and it took four goes to complete the next with three dead ends taking the total to 10.

Dead ends had made up a third of the game to this point with nine killed

by Trewhella and one by Butler. The game had also been very tight to this • Blake Butler, winner of the Men's State Singles. point with only two scores over two but the game began to open up.

Butler scored a one and a three to take the lead 18-14 but Trewhella counted with a two and his first three to get back in front.

Two ends later they were locked up once again at 20 before three good draw shots got Butler three shots to take him within an end of victory.

On the next end however Trewhella returned the favour with a good three of his own and levelled the match for the sixth time. A great first bowl by Butler gave him control of the end however Trewhella had sit or trail for game.

He hung wide as many of those shots had through the day giving Butler an opportunity to draw within a foot and a half for game. Butler was a touch quick but kept shot and the mat which was critical for his last shot strategy.

At 24-23 Butler brought the mat right up with the jack on the tee and drove at the bare jack looking to bury it in the ditch behind his bowl. It was a tactic he attempted in the semi-final when 24-21 up against Daniel Brown but missed and put his first two bowls in the ditch nearly leaving himself vulnerable.

This time he made no mistake and drove the jack into the ditch finishing no more than a foot away from his bowl, forcing Trewhella to draw right to the lip. Trewhella second bowl was a great effort just falling in while his third was even better.

He drew right to the lip and his line was good enough to have a look at although probably not quite shot.

Butler was unwilling to take the chance and drove Trewhella’s bowl into the ditch leaving Trewhella one last chance. He needed to tighten his line a fraction with the same perfect weight but wasn’t able to pull off one of the hardest shots in the game.

Butler seemed almost stunned to have won the championship in one of the greatest finishes seen in a long time. It’s his first Western Australian title and capped off a weekend of awesome draw bowling.

He’ll now have the right to represent the state at the Australian Championships • Blake shows his style. next season.

Suns set to shine in NZ Blooms The Chemist Perth Suns will take an unchanged lineup into BPL09 at they cross the ditch and once again challenge for finals and a crack at the $100,000 Prizemoney in what promises to be another exciting and action packed event.

John Slavich, Shane Knott and Kristina Krstic along with Pieter Harris combined brilliantly to make the finals of BPL08 and will be looking to at least match that performance when they take on the world's best players at Naenae Bowling Club from February 25-28.

The biggest test is likely to be last years winners in the Brisbane Pirates who with world superstar Alex Marshall will be looking for a third BPL title. Marshall will be ably assisted by Australian rep Kelsie Cottrell and Michael Breen.

Also worth watching is Canadian sensation Ryan Bester who spearheads the Murray Steamers with team mates Ellen Ryan and Michael Walker. The Steamers are regular finals contenders and should be right in the mix again.

Other popular players in the event include Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Aaron Wilson (Melbourne Roys), Multiple World Cup singles winner Jeremy Henry (Illawarra Gorillas), Australian champion Aron Sheriff (Gold Coast Hawks) and the golden girl of Australian bowls Karen Murphy (Sydney Lions).

Of course all the home town support will undoubtedly be behind the New Zealand Blackjacks who have three internationals in Shannon McIlroy, Seamus Curtain and Jo Edwards in their line-up.

Club Profile: Lake Monger

Lake Monger reaping the rewards from diversification

by Clive Adams – Regional Bowls Manager (WA North/East) Clubs of all sports around Australia are constantly facing the need to diversify in order to attract new members and visitors to their facility.

For bowling clubs this is no different, they must identify their strengths, engage with their local community and find ways to encourage people to walk through the door.

One club doing a great job in this area is Lake Monger Recreation Club.

Situated on the banks of the picturesque Lake Monger, just minutes from the city and across from the busy Mitchell Freeway, the club is embracing the community and finding ways to remain viable while still maintaining its key identity as a bowling club.

In terms of bowlers, the club has just 45 members, however, with a large and growing number of social members, it is what the club is doing off the greens that is ensuring it remains financially prosperous to promote all aspects of the club.

As well as two carpet bowling greens, the club boasts two 5-a-side soccer courts, a Petanque court (which has replaced an unused bowling green), an archery club in the park next door, darts, pool, and a golf section that plays off-site.

“Around a decade ago, and before my time with the club, management realised that to remain viable, we couldn’t simply remain as a bowling club – we needed to look at other forms of income. Petanque and archery were two of the early ones before the 5-a-side soccer went in about 7 years ago,” said Club Manager Peter Hill.

But the sports aren’t just it, the club is situated on one of the busiest walking paths in Perth, with many choosing a walk around the lake as the perfect way to get their daily exercise.

“We watched the people go by…however, we were somewhat stymied by local regulations that didn’t allow us to use signage etc to advertise to those passers-by.

We tried a couple of times, using signage supplied by Bowls WA through our Regional Bowls Manager (RBM) Clive Adams, and there was certainly promise, but we were looking for how we could do more,” Peter added.

The crucial breakthrough came when the Mayor of Cambridge, Keri Shannon, visited the club and immediately recognised the potential.

“Mayor Shannon, along with others at the Cambridge Council, have really opened things up for us,” Peter said.

“We can now market to the walkers and the council has even installed a path from the walking path to our front gate, making it even easier for people to visit our club.

“We’ve installed signage to encourage people to come in for coffee and cake, and we are seeing an immediate response.

We are also dog friendly, and happy to provide water for anyone out just walking their dog.”

The club is now opening the Coffee and Cake Café from 8.30am to 2.30pm, Tuesday to Sunday, and is seeing a steady flow of customers coming through the door.

More people through the club is creating a greater atmosphere and is exposing it to a new clientele, possible new members and more people to participate in all of the great offerings, both sporting and hospitality.

The club has recently installed solar panels, embracing its environmental responsibilities and also embraces its local community through involvement with many local groups, including St John of God Hospital where the club welcomes Mums and Bubs, and in particular, breastfeeding Mums.

Local dance groups are regulars at the club and it has great modern equipment to ensure these occasions are as enjoyable as possible. A local fitness class also runs a session each week.

Autism Australia visits each week, using the facility for various events, including bowls, as well as dancing and learning activities.

Perhaps the most exciting announcement in recent times is the partnership with the Western Australian Deaf Recreation Association.

The partnership has brought nearly 200 new members into the club and continues to grow, but it is the way the club has adopted the partnership that is truly impressive.

“I’ve employed two bar staff that know sign language,” Peter said.

“We are all learning. I now know the alphabet in sign language, and we are arranging courses for all our members that wish to learn sign language to get involved. The Association has brought with it some amazing people that have a shared interest in enjoying recreational and sporting activities. We are very pleased.”

Functions are a crucial source of income for all clubs and Lake Monger is certainly promoting itself in that market.

One corporate Christmas function held last year was attended by hundreds of people and was staged on an unused green.

In the perfect surroundings, it was a wonderful event that provided important income for the club, as well as showcasing the facility to everyone in attendance.

“This is a great story of a club that has recognised it needs to do things differently to survive,” said RBM Clive Adams.

“The surroundings of the club are a clear strength, with a summer’s evening enjoying the views over the lake just ideal.

Clubs need to find their key strengths and capitalise on them.

Lake Monger is doing this brilliantly.”

The club plans to do more into the future. The café style offering is in its infancy and simply needs time to grow, while there are plans for a community shed to be located on the premises, and talk of Local Tribute bands and food truck Sundays being planned.

The club is well positioned to look for grant opportunities as they arise and build on a wonderfully effective relationship with the Council.

Estimated at 15,000+ visitors, the Senior Recreation Council’s 2018 'Have a Go Live Lighter Day' was a resounding success!

Bowls WA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Senior Recreation Council in 2014 to sponsor our State Over 60’s Mixed Pairs Event.

With a continued MOU over the four years this event has increased by 95% – the inaugural 2015 event began with 38 entries and the 2018 had 74.

This most definitely establishes a need and a place for happy, healthy senior engagement in sport! Volunteers lent a hand to man the booth and help participants learn more about our great sport by talking about personal experience, sharing their history of the sport, and providing pointers to clubs close to those interested.

Small Country Clubs Profile: Moodiarrup

Moodiarrup celebrates 80 years On Sunday 25th November 2018 current members, ex members and family members of ex members gathered at the Moodiarrup Bowling Club to celebrate their 80th Year Anniversary.

Some of the visitors joined members for a couple of games of bowls which were unfortunately interrupted by some heavy rain and cold winds.

Then they all gathered in the clubhouse which had been very tastefully decorated with the clubs history, photos, memorabilia and a clothing display depicting the club colours of red and white with the special emblem of a possum which was designed by Life member Tony Montgomery, on the several shirts used over the last 25 years for pennant members. Another special display of Western Australian club badges which were collected over many years by Lowden Cochrane was kindly lent to the club for the day.

Club President Geoff Hosking welcomed all visitors for this special milestone in the club’s history. He delivered a short run down of the clubs history over the last 80 years and thanked all members for their time and work involved in making this function possible.

Then he called on Neil Abbott, the youngest son of Bill Abbott who was responsible for setting up the first green – 1 rink on his farm 'Yeedalong in 1938 to cut the very aptly decorated cake.

From those small beginnings a full sized green was established in 1950 beside the Arthur River and Moodiarrup Hall. This green was watered by the river water which eventually became too saline.

In 1982 the club moved to its present site & became one of the first clubs in WA to establish a Synthetic bowls surface.

A second green went in in 1993 which was replaced in 2011 by a Dry Max pro surface.

With a membership of only 30 members we are very proud of all achievements attained for such a small club.

Capel Bowls Club Charity Event

Charity event between car dealers In barmy twilight conditions in January the Capel Bowls Club arranged a charity bowls event and Auction between teams from new car dealerships of the South West.

Forty bowlers from Mercedes Benz-Bunbury, Spencer Motors, Bunbury Holden, Bunbury Nissan, Busselton Toyota and Rod Hall’s Bunbury Auto Group took part in a social game of bowls.

The game was followed by an Auction with proceeds going to Prostate Cancer Foundation towards cancer research.

Nine men in Australia die from this cancer every day.

This was a community initiative of the 65 member bowls club. The Capel public were invited to a sausage sizzle and the Auction.

The Auction raised just under $5,000. Thirty four items went under the hammer ranging from sporting memorabilia, and a diverse range of consumables including TV sets, printers, manchester, mechanical tools and services.

A & M Williams Classic

Dunsborough triumph in Classic The annual A&M Williams classic played on 23rd and 24th of October in almost perfect conditions was once again a huge success for the Kukerin club.

This very popular event continues to attract bowlers from a wide area of the South West of WA which this year included teams from Emu Point, Middleton Beach, Albany, Dunsborough, Manning, Mundaring, Leeman, Quairading, Moodiarrup, Gnowangerup, Kulin, Dumbleyung, Lake Grace, Katanning, Newdegate, and Kojonup.

The first days play saw some very competitive close, and high class games with the Albany team leading narrowly from Gnowangerup and Middleton Beach teams on three wins each. Day two was filled with suspense as each game concluded different teams came into calculations and going into the sixth and final game the winners could have come from any one of a number of teams.

The final result saw the Dunsborough team of E.Hoemberg, G. Benn, G. Oddy, D. Henderson win on four wins and a draw, 18pts, from the Quairading side of J. Gimbel, V. Hadlow, P. O’Hare, four wins 16 pts and 40 shots up in second place and the team of M. Carey, S. Salomon, S. Lambert, and P. Barrow from Manning in third spot with four wins 16 pts and 35 shots up and four other teams close behind on four wins and 16 shots.

First day winners was D. Bairstow’s side from Albany, and M.Cousin and team from Mundaring were second day winners.

Kukerin Bowling Club thank all sponsors and visiting players for their continued support of the event. Our wonderful small band of ladies once again excelled themselves with their catering which was praised by all players.

Ray gets an 8 Twenty years ago Como veteran Ray Carter was a member of a team that gave away an eight in pennant bowls. It took until Thursday January 24 when Ray, Bruce Quartermaine, Peter Vuckovic and Barry Baker were able to grab an eight back on the first end of the 1st Division pennant game against Thornlie.

He is one of the most senior players in the history of 1st Division pennants to land an eight.

Denison Bowling Club hosts Kailis Classic Denison Bowling and Recreational Club held the 49th sponsored Kailis two day event on the Australia Day weekend.

The three full greens of 144 players, came from 12 different country and metropolitan clubs.

The greens were in absolute magnificent, sleek condition, running at 15 plus depending on the direction the players were bowling.

By Sunday evening there were a number of sun red faces and to make bowling interesting, the wind came in with some strong gusts.

Overall, the bowls, the atmosphere and the catering for approximately 180 people assured the week was most successful, to the point that next year’s event is already half full.

'Delly' as he is known, was a demon fast bowler but has had three knee replacements, two in this leg, and took up bowls in 2014. Delly participated in three long games of 14 live ends and recovered later with a few ales.

Winning Drive is a program that aims to help clubs improve their management and governance by educating those in leadership positions on the best practice operations for their clubs.

Bowls WA is hoping that clubs will embrace the Winning Drive program that aims to bring a structured approach to club development for bowling clubs in Western Australia as well as providing support to the country regions.

The Winning Drive is all about providing clubs with support and resources to enable their further development as well as assist in the operating of clubs.

Clubs will need to complete five things to become Winning Drive Certified, listed here.

These five tasks aim to benefit clubs and provide them with the information and resources that will assist them with the present day running of their club as well as provide a solid platform of which to work off from for the future development of their club.
