with Aaron DELAPORTE Another season is well and truly upon us and we have already seen some great performances in the Men’s and Women’s State Fours (pages 14-15) and in the Dyenamic Masters Series with the Mixed Fours (page 16) and Pairs (page 17) so well done to those early victors.

It was great to see some new faces announced in Australian ranks with Ruby Leggett, Jack East and Segan Pasalich joining clubmate Cody Packer and Kristina Krstic as WA player part of the national training programs.

Off the green Game Plan (Page 10-11) has been introduced as a new online tool to assist clubs. Mt Lawley Bowling Club have already given it a try and thanks to President Terry Conley who supplied his views on how it went for them. We look forward to many more clubs giving this a go.

For clubs running social media I recommend having a read of our Club Wise Guide on page 12, some really good advice in there for clubs who are active in that space.

And finally our club in profile is Exmouth (page 24), Regional Bowls Manager Clive Adams really enjoyed his visit up north where he met with plenty of other clubs along the way. Our far north clubs have had plenty of tourists this off season and one day I look forward to dropping in for a visit myself and will certainly include Exmouth on the list.

Strategic plans to ensure future viability To all Presidents, Executive Committees/Boards and Members I ask you this question. Does your Club have current good Governance procedures and does it have a Strategic Plan to ensure its future viability going forward?

Because we live in an ever changing world it is imperative you address these matters expediently. I know a number of Clubs are very well managed.Their Boards have assessed their situation and in some cases totally revitalised their Club.

However, if your Club is struggling to attract new members at the present time there is a wealth of knowledge available to your Board. All I ask is you seek help to make your Club more viable.

The first move to make is to contact your RBM (Regional Bowls Manager) Clive Adams in the North and Steve Unsworth in the South. Their services come at no cost to your Club – they are employed by Bowls Australia. They will go through our Winning Drive Program with you in depth. This includes reviewing your current Governance and assisting in developing a Strategic Plan. They have assisted many Clubs – ring them and ask for a reference from some of the Clubs they have asssisted. It could be the first step to re-energising and re-building your Club!

The number of pennant bowlers in Australia has declined over a number of years. In WA we now have about 13,500 pennant bowlers. Society has changed dramatically! People now work on a fly in- fly out basis, a lot more women work than ever before, there are so many more sports and activities to choose from than ever before and therefore people can't commit to an 18 week season plus preseason and finals.

What is encouraging is the number of corporate and social bowlers enjoying our game. People are happy to commit a couple of hours whether it be a team building exercise or just a social game like Scroungers.

To this end Clubs should strive to be very much part of their Community! Involve your Members of Parliament, both Federal and State, communicate with your Local Government Authority, invite major corporate companies in your area to utilise your facilities, see if any sporting or recreational group would prefer to use your licenced premises as their headquarters and lastly have a plan to retain a member when they walk through your door.

Clubs that have been successful in re-vitalising their Club in the last few years are Mt Lawley, Bayswater, Perth and Tatts and Sorrento, just to name a few. Cockburn now call themselves Cockburn Community Recreation Club which makes the Club more inclusive – they have over 1500 members!

I appreciate in the small country towns there has been a population shift to the seaboard! The Murray and South West League's have large membership numbers. However, the more clubs that remain viable the better for all of us.

Everyone s responsibility to ensure our best chance of playing out full season A new season is upon us and hopefully we will get through it relatively unscathed! With the Eastern States only now opening up and finalising what can and can’t happen at bowling clubs, we have been incredibly fortunate to have unrestricted access to the greens and our clubhouse, allowing for the sport to continue without restriction.

That said we must all be mindful of our responsibilities to ensure our best possible chance to play out the season as we would hope – please check in, get tested if need be and understand the fragility of our situation.

Open Gender Pennant Following resounding support from clubs at the AGM, the metropolitan area has taken a quantum leap with the first stages of Open Gender pennant. Although limited to men’s 4th division and under and ladies 3rd division and under it is a start to what will inevitably be a competition open to all at some future point in time. The Board does not have a set timeline for this to occur, rather it will be carried out with full discussion and disclosure with the clubs as we initially 'dip our toe' into these unchartered waters.

It is important to note that WA is now one of the only state and territories where open gender bowls is not the norm; so although not ground-breaking at a national level, it may take some getting used to at state level.

Remember the details are clearly set out in the Handbook.

Understand the Conditions of Play Each and every year both individuals and clubs fall foul of the most basic conditions of play, often causing loss of points or even disqualifications. In particular rules surrounding extreme weather be it rain or heat are often 'made up on the day' as advised by someone else with the loudest voice.

Learn the Rules for such instances. They are clearly set out in the Conditions of Play found in the Handbook, which every club has multiple copies of. The Umpire of the Day is the person in charge once the match commences; they are the sole arbiter of the rules and their use in play.

A number of aids have been forwarded to clubs, with detailed videos produced on the BWA website, explaining in simple terms what to do in certain situations.

There will not be a great deal of sympathy shown to sides that blatantly disregard Conditions of Play that are clearly explained in a number of formats – be warned!

Governance Review As discussed at the Forum on the morning of the AGM, the Board under the direction of Board Member Brian Lucas has commenced work on the review of all things Governance at Bowls WA. The importance of this work should not be underestimated, as stated by President Larry in his report.

Not only do these documents give a clear set of guidelines for the business to follow, they provide a process that clearly defines required actions in various situations.

All clubs from time to time need to fall back on documents such as their Constitution to provide a clear set of actions to follow – no club is too small to have these important documents kept up to date. One day you will be very pleased you did.

Following the review of the Constitution, By Laws and various Committee Charters, the Association will embark on a new Strategic Plan for 2023.

It is in the preliminary work for this that clubs will be called upon to provide appropriate input into the final outcome, to ensure it is truly reflective of Bowls in WA.

2021 State Mixed Masters Fours

BowlAbility is about inclusivity

The 2021 Mixed Masters Fours were played with an outstanding runner-up performance from three of the State Bowling Arm Sandgropers (Bunbury: Gail Ecclestone and Gary Giblett, Eaton: Kerry Ward) playing with Bunbury skipper Darren Wilkinson.

The foursome were one of six teams that went through the first three rounds undefeated playing Lofthouse’s composite team in the first round (14:12), Douthie’s composite team in the second round (19:11), and Einfeld’s Mt Lawley team in the third round (18:16).

The quarter finals held a surprise win over the team of Glen Pauling, Scott Walker, Lee Poletti, and Kerry Andersen 15:11 in a lead up to a semi-final win over Sean Mawdsley’s team 15:8.

The final was between two teams who had played extremely very well to make it this far – the South West Wilkinson team versus Sorrento’s Bruce Eagles, Murray Hulbert, Kerry Hutchinson, and Coral Smith.

The South West had the lead 11-10 with just 5 ends to play; however, this lead did not last, and Eagles took the title at 17-12.

Coming Runner Up in a state title is fantastic - congratulations to our Sandgroper Bowling Arm Players and Darren Wilkinson – a great result out of 30 entries!

Local Coolbellup resident Andrew Maddy has Autism and a love of playing lawn bowls – his father had played for many a year and had handed down a set of bowls for Andrew to try – but he was not sure where he could go to fit in.

He found out about the BowlAbility program run at Kardinya Bowling Club – called to express interest – and within a week he started playing and enjoying the social atmosphere!

Within two years Andrew has gone from playing socially for two hours on a Friday to playing at the State All Abilities Championships…to obtaining an Inclusive Membership at the club! All of this is in addition to his volunteer work that he does at Fiona Stanley Hospital. Way to go Andrew – you have shown everyone that if you want to try something new a person must step up, come out of their comfort zone, and have a try.

And, congratulations to Kardinya Bowling Club for creating the cost-effective Inclusion Membership to support all levels of player ability in our sport!

Preparations for new season begin Its time again to prepare for another season of Pennant Bowls and here are some of the things the Umpires Committee have been progressing during the off season.

Officiating Courses In the calendar year 2021 approximately 130 new officials across the state have completed their training and been assessed as Competent. At the same time approximately 70 existing officials have sought and gained re-accreditation.

In addition, there have been four new and some re-accredited Presenters and Assessors (P&As).

May this year saw WA gain two more International Technical Officers [ITOs] and one re-accredit ITO as assessed by the World Bowls representative in Australia. Congratulations to Ryan Havercroft of South Perth and Sharon Lyster of Manning who successfully completed their ITO assessments and to Elain McDonald of Eaton BC, who was reaccredited for another 5 years.

These numbers are slightly above what is needed to maintain our pool of competent officials so a thank you goes out to those P&As who gave of their time to make this happen.

Impact of COVID Due to COVID lockdowns in 2020, training opportunities were limited in all states, including WA, leading to Bowls Australia granting a 12-month extension to all Officials who were due for re-accreditation in 2020.

For 2021 something similar is being considered on a stateby-state basis. Being fortunate enough to live in WA we have not had much in the way of COVID lockdowns so there will be no automatic extensions applying to Markers, Measurers or National Umpires whose four years expire in 2021 or 2022.

For them re-accreditation assessments need to be booked.

Changes in the Laws There have been changes to the Laws of the Sport of Bowls but very minimal. It is a matter of deleting all of the Law 17.2.5 on page 33 and also deleting the words 'by players with a hearing disability' from policy A.1.4.5 on page 96.

Umpires Equipment Clubs have been sent an Umpires Kit checklist to assist in the Spring Cleaning of their equipment.

Now, at the start of the season is a good time to schedule an annual check. The most common problems are: • Wedges and white strips missing. While not really consumables they seem to disappear from kits as if they were.

• Feeler gauges rusting up. An annual spray with a penetrant such as WD 40 or CRC followed by some machine oil [e.g.

Sewing machine or shaver oil] should keep them free of rust.

• Calliper threads rusting. Same treatment as the feeler gauges is recommended.

• Damaged long tapes used for measuring distances from the mat to jacks or bowls. Another reason to update your long tape is that there are now available in your favourite hardware store, self-winding or 5:1 geared long tapes that wind up fast enough to avoid the tape blowing into adjacent rinks while you try to wind it up.

Bowls WA Officials Handbook for 2021/22 Clubs have also received their issue of Bowls WA Handbooks that contain lots of useful information for active Umpires hence clubs should make them available to their accredited umpires.

This information includes the use of the more accurate laser measures by suitably trained Umpires at Bowls WA events.

Information about the what is suitable training has been provided to our accredited Presenters and Assessors.

Metro based umpires have been sent a new simplified version of the announcement to be made to bowlers when Extreme Weather is likely to disrupt a pennant fixture. In addition, they have been provided with notes about how to apply the Extreme Weather clauses in the Metro Pennants Conditions of Play.

Keeping It Simple (KISS) In line with the Commonwealth Games cycle, World Bowls will be considering proposed changes to the Laws of the Sport of Bowls during next year’s games in Birmingham. The Bowls Australia submission to this review includes a lot of small changes to make the Laws easier to read. As an Umpire who often has had to explain/translate the Laws to bowlers and as a P&A who does his best to train new umpires, I think this is a very worthy cause. More plain English is needed!

I would like to take this opportunity to express my condolences to the Smith Family on the sudden loss of Hayden. His bowling prowess will be sadly missed not only at a Zone level but all the way down to his home club of York. Being involved in a lot of community organisations he has left big shoes to fill.

As I mentioned in the last Jack Hi, BA are encouraging STA’s to look at reducing the levels of administration. The South West Zone held a Special General Meeting on the 11th October with representatives from the four South West Leagues present, to change a clause in the constitution stating any funds had to be dispersed evenly to the Leagues.

It was recommended and passed that these funds be proportionately returned to the Leagues as per the percentage of affiliated players within the League at the time of closing the bank account. The distribution of these funds will be approximately Leeuwin 12%, Blackwood 12%, South West 33% and Murray 43%. It now has to go to Government for approval. The Northern Zone have voted to follow the South West Zone and are now looking at their constitution to decide

how they will disperse any funds when they close their bank account. Discussions will take place at the next Country Committee meeting in February on how the 21 Country Leagues will have input once the administration of the Zones is disbanded.

Sponsorship for Country Week has changed with Afgri having the naming rights for Country week. I would like to thank Afgri for coming on board after our previous sponsors BCIB decided to reduce their sponsorship.

Feed back from last year’s live streaming was positive and again has been approved by the Board for this seasons Men's and Ladies Country Week Singles Final. It will cost $2000 per event and will be professionally produced by SEN. This year the Leeuwin League has decided to have an open gender pennants season. This may be seen as a test case by some, but I feel if we want the pennant competition to survive we need to involve as many players as possible.

Country pennants are underway and I would like to wish everyone an enjoyable season.

Earlier this year Sport Australia released a new online tool designed specifically for helping sporting clubs examine how they operate and supporting them to build and improve capability called Sport Game Plan.

A small number of clubs have registered and are already receiving the benefits.

The Mount Lawley Bowling Club was made aware of Sports Australia’s Game Plan webbased toolkit for assisting sports clubs in their ongoing development by Clive Adams, Bowls Australia’s Northern Regional Bowls Manager for WA. The Club had recently developed a Strategic Plan and were in the process of establishing Action Plans to underpin the new Strategic Plan and to supersede existing action plans the club put in place some years earlier.

The Game Plan toolkit provides a step-by-step approach for sports clubs to assesses their existing strategic and operational capabilities as well as perceived strengths and weaknesses. The toolkit includes a catalogue of pro-forma resources which can be customised to individual club needs.

When using Game Plan for the first time the administrator or 'Super User' inputs information to establish a Club’s profile then the current priorities of the club from a list of nine areas which includes participation, marketing, infrastructure, stakeholder engagement, values and technology.

The next step is to undertake a self-assessment of the club’s capability across the 13 modules that make up Game plan. These cover Game Plan’s foundation modules of Finance, Governance, Workforce and Strategy as well as the nine priority areas referenced above.

Once the self-assessment is complete Game Plan ranks the club’s maturity for each of the 13 areas as being not in place, developing, developed or excelling.

The next step is to plan the actions required to move the club along the maturity scale for each of the 13 modules from the current assessed position to excelling in the order the club determines is of highest priority or benefit to the club.

As Mount Lawley Bowling Club Committee had completed a SWOT (Strength Weaknesses Opportunities and Threats) analysis and priorities identification in order to develop our Strategic Plan it was not an onerous task to complete the club profile, priority ranking and maturity assessment for the 13 areas covered by the Game Plan modules.

The club has 6 pillars in our Strategic Plan and the Game Plan modules have been prioritised to line up against these pillars.

Mount Lawley Bowling Club’s Experience to date The Committee has just commenced the Plan stage of Game Plan by identifying those areas where there is a low maturity rating or where the club sees great benefit in moving to the excelling rating as quickly as possible.

Each of the modules has a specific action plan template which can be easily adapted to meet the needs of the club. All of the action plan templates have a similar structure covering the following areas: • Overview and Background • Risks • Goals and Objectives • Stakeholders • Resources in place already • Success Metrics • Additional Resources required • Timelines • Budget • Reporting • Action items including responsibility and planned completion dates Game Plan has a very good catalogue of resources that can be easily customised to meet a club’s requirements and include club branding and references. Suggested Game Plan resources can be added or removed to meet an individual club’s needs.

Once each template has been customised and action item list and timelines established it can be moved to the Monitor component of Game Plan so that progress can be tracked against the plan.

Game plan is easy to use with repeatable steps and activities across all the modules so there should be a common look and feel to completed Action Plans undertaken by different club members.

One ‘problem’ encountered and which took some time in overcoming was the application’s failure to move plans to the monitor stage. It turned out that some functionality does not work if using a Mac and Safari as the browser.

So if you plan to use a Mac then use Google Chrome to overcome this ‘feature’.

At only 13 Jack Hedland the youngest member of Cockburn Bowling Club played his first game of pennants in Round 2 of The Professionals Men’s Saturday Pennant Competition.

After watching his grandfather Syd playing, Jack has always wanted to play and after some training and practice sessions finally got his chance. Jacks debut game in 4th division was played against Mosman Park, playing as a second.

The rink won 25 to 12 and Cockburn the team won 87 – 47 in what is a great start to what might be a very promising bowls career.

A club-wise guide to Social Media Social Media including popular platforms such as Facebook and Instagram are a very good promotional and communicational tool for clubs and their ease of use makes them popular as photos, video and text can be easily uploaded via a mobile phone in just a matter of seconds.

However there are some pitfalls to social media which can cause trouble for clubs which we will touch on here and work through some ways to deal with these issues. Anti-social behaviour including things such as bullying and defamation are well known on Facebook and it is important for clubs to realize that even though 99% of members can participate online in a normal way it only takes 1% to cause huge issues, some of these in the past have escalated to such point that members have received suspensions. As the manager of a social media page, it's important to understand that the club can be responsible for what is posted by others within the page in areas such as the comments section. This situation came to light in a recent NSW case where The High Court has recently affirmed on appeal that administrators of public social media pages are deemed to be the ‘publishers’ of third-party comments made on their page.

Whilst the courts have yet to fully consider or determine the applicability of the defence of ‘innocent dissemination’, which provides a defence to publishers of third-party material who did not have the capacity to exercise editorial control over the material before it was published and who did not know, or reasonably ought to have known, that the material was defamatory it is obviously extremely important that clubs have a way to deal with such posts in a way to avoid any of these repercussions. The best way is to have a Social Media Policy and this can be a fairly straight forward document which gives those managing your social media a really easy way to deal with some tough situations but also guides them around appropriate content for the page.

Some rules to consider that can easily apply to all clubs are as follows: 1. Do not allow swearing, bullying or abusive behaviour.

A swearing filter is available on Facebook but any comments that are personal or abusive should be immediately removed. Warning and then banning people who are repeat offenders is advised. Have a user policy posted online so it is clear to everyone what behaviour is accepted or not accepted on your page.

2. Consider how you post content from your club that may be controversial or divisive. This information may be better shared via email or at a club meeting of members.

Alternatively turn off comments for these posts.

Negative comments provided they are not abusive should not be deleted. A better strategy may be to offer an explanation or have club advocates who can rebuff such negative comments with a more positive spin. For example, a post promoting club meals which has a person say the dish last week was terrible. The club could offer a refund, at least an apology and other members could say their meals were great.

4. If your club has a strategic or business plan that includes club values check each time content is posted that it meets those club values.

Do not post personal opinions or off subject material including anything not related to your bowls club activities, especially things like inappropriate jokes, religious or political views.

5. If your club has policies around Alcohol, Gambling and Behaviour ensure your content is consistent with those policies. Also ensure you are not breaching any conditions of your club liquor license, gaming regulations or the incorporated associations act. The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) has 14 principles for promotion of alcohol (not exclusive to social media) which touch on many unacceptable practices including Chase the Ace promotions which can only be entered by purchasing liquor and happy hour promotions over 60 minutes duration as just a couple of examples.

At the end of the day its important to remember why we exist as Bowling Clubs and that primary reason is to play bowls so make sure your social media has just as much bowls promotion as it does any other non-bowls activities. Also whilst its important to promote to the general public under the Incorporated Associations Act its members and their guests who are legally permitted to use the club facilities.

Men’s State Fours

Nairn foursome simply awesome in state fours

by Pieter Harris Finals day of the 2021 Dyenamic Men’s State Fours took place at the Rossmoyne Bowling Club on Sunday 31st October with a magnificent crowd in attendance.

The first Semi Final saw the South Perth team of Justin Opie, Glenn Pauling, Troy Kinnane and Scott Walker overwhelm Daniel Trewhella, Tom Mitchell, Peter Ker and Mark Simpson.

After a back and forth first four ends, Opie exploded away over four ends with a one, two, three and finally a five to break the game open at 13-3. Walker was all over the jack from the leads position and received ample back up from his teammates when required, with Opie producing some great bowls to produce the final numbers.

The Trewhella team tried to fight back and won six of the last ten ends but another five on the twelfth end and a four on the final end ensured a 26-17 win to Justin Opie and a South Perth team in the final.

The second semi final was a similar story to the first semi final with the composite team of Blake Nairn, Clive Adams, Dale Marsland and Dave Rankin jumping away from Connor Biddle, Steve O’Neill, Kevin Pickering and Ian Lilburne.

Nairn stung a number of ends together early and made them count by making them multiples to lead 14-5 after nine ends.

A big and slightly fortunate five on the tenth end to Nairn looked to have finished the game early with a 19-5 lead.

It was then the Biddle team found some touch to grab consecutive scores with a three and a four to get within distance at 12-19 down with six ends to play.

But with the Nairn lead team playing with too much consistency, Biddle was unable to close the gap and the two teams shared the last six ends, winning three ends each and Nairn winning 24-16.

The final loomed as a great contest, with the Rossmoyne undercover green playing well and two highly skilled teams in the final. A three on the first end to Nairn was replied to

by Opie, with his team taking the next three ends to take the lead. A two to Nairn on the fifth end was the start of a match winning run of six ends.

A couple of twos, a three and some singles saw the lead climb to nine shots, with Nairn leading 13-4 after ten ends. Rankin and Walker were having a great battle in the leads position, but it was Dale Marsland from the seconds position that was changing the heads over for the Nairn team.

Turning shot bowls over and trailing jacks around the corner, continually put the Opie team under pressure.

Showing some signs of a revival, Opie won two ends in a row with a one and a two, but it was short lived as Nairn replied with a four and a one to strengthen their lead to 18-7 with four ends to play.

Again, Opie won two ends in a row to give them some hope but it was finally snuffed out on the seventeenth end when a two to Nairn put the game beyond doubt.

While the final may not have had the finish the crowd wanted, it was still played at a high standard by both teams with Blake Nairn, Clive Adams, Dale Marsland and Dave Rankin being crowned the 2021-22 Men’s Dyenamic State Fours Champions.

Interestingly the team entered the competition after being selected to represent WA at the since cancelled Australian Sides Championships with skip Blake Nairn inviting the others to join him in the State Fours and it turned out to be a great decision by all to play together.

Women’s State Fours

Bruce last bowl – a winner

by Pieter Harris The Rossmoyne Bowling Club was the scene of some wonderful finals games in the 2021-22 Women’s State Fours on Sunday October 31st.

The first semi was a replay of last seasons final with 202021 Champions Kristina Krstic, Hailey Packer, Robyn O’Brien and Helen Heal taking on Lisa Featherby, Laura Merz, Denise Kelly and Linda Warburton. The crowd barely had time to take their seats when the Featherby combination jumped away with a six on the first end. Following it up with a single, three and another single, it was 11-0 before Krstic finally got on the board with a one on the fifth end.

Another three to Featherby and they were making every post a winner as they cruised into the twelfth end with a 21-3 lead. A run of three winning ends to Krstic put the score at 21-7 with three ends to play but a single on sixteenth end to Featherby saw Krstic concede with two ends left to play and Featherby winning 22-7.

The second semifinal was a much closer affair and was anybody’s game with three ends to play. Jennie Bruce, Shari Solly, Amanda Masters and Shaan Saunders started the game strongly with a four and a two early to lead Noelene Abe, Shelley Radcliffe, Beverley Davidson and Irene Leahy 6-1 after three ends. Abe hit back with two threes to take the lead at 7-6.

For the next ten ends the two teams went back and forth, 7-7, 8-8, 10-10 and then 14-13 to Jennie Bruce after fifteen ends. On the sixteenth end the game suddenly changed, when out of nowhere Bruce grabbed a five to lead by six with only two ends to play. Another single on the second last end meant Abe needed an eight to win on the last end but as mostly happens it wasn’t to be and only a single meant Bruce and her team went through to the final as 20-14 winners.

As with the first semifinal, it was a big start to the game.

However instead of Featherby getting the six, it was Bruce who struck first with the popular first end number.

Not to be deterred, Featherby followed up on the next end with a five of her own before normality resumed with only a single on the third end of the game to leave the scores at 6-6.

As with the second semifinal, the game settled down to a great contest with both teams trading bowls and scores. Bruce would grab a two or three shot lead and then Featherby would fight back for much of the next ten ends.

Featherby finally found her team in front when on the fifteenth end, she got a single to edge out to a 15-14 lead with three ends to play.

Another single to Featherby saw the lead go to two with two ends to play and then the Bruce team set up a grandstand finish by grabbing a two and going into the final end level at 16-16.

With the skips to play, Featherby held the shot, but the Bruce team was attacking the jack with weight. After a miss on her first bowl, Bruce played the same shot but changed hands for her last bowl of the match.

With her bowl halfway down the green Bruce’s teammates as well as the crowd were getting excited and when the bowl connected with the jack taking it to the ditch a wall of cheers rang around the green.

Featherby still had a bowl to play and had between two and three feet to draw to the ditch to get the shot. While the line was good, it always looked a little short and the bowl pulled up a foot or two shorter than it needed to be.

The celebrations began soon after with Jennie Bruce, Shari Solly, Shaan Saunders and Amanda Masters crowned the 2021-22 Women’s Dyenamic State Fours Champions.

Mixed Masters Fours

Eagles foursome win mixed Masters Fours

by Aaron Delaporte Sorrento’s Bruce Eagles was able to steer his team of Murray Hulbert, Kerry Hutchinson and Coral Smith to victory in the $5000 Sorrento Mixed Masters Fours played on Monday 27th September 2021.

Despite a few showers across the two days the matches were able to be completed in reasonably good conditions with some terrific bowls action on display.

The competition started with 30 strong teams, each with two males and two females who had qualified to enter by winning a club championship.

A blind draw saw the sides compete in three matches across the first day of play on Sunday with the top 8 ranked teams progressing to finals.

Six teams were undefeated, these were skipped by Ball (Composite), Buchanan (Composite), Pauling (Composite), Rhett Butler (Composite), Eagles (Composite) and Wilkinson (Composite) which left two spots for teams with two wins and the best shot difference.

Anthony Einfeld with a +21 was the 7th team through to qualify whilst amazingly three other teams all finished with a +17 differential which left competition officials reaching for the calculator to split them on percentage. In the end it was Sean Mawdsley 153% and his Composite side who scraped through ahead of Mark Douthie (North Beach) 150% and Blake Nairn (Composite) 146%.

Knockout play for the top 8 teams took place on Monday with the 8th ranked Mawdsley and his team of Mark Rollings, Pam Chalmers and Helen Stevens upsetting the top ranked team of Brad Ball, Chris Lander, Irene Arndt and Pauline Bourne 16-14.

Darren Wilkinson’s team were another upset win defeating the talented team of Glen Pauling, Scott Walker, Lee Poletti and Kerry Andersen 15-11.

Bruce Eagles side overcame a gallant Rhett Butler with Leith Oldham, Shelley Jeffs and Lily Rughoobur 15-14 whilst Anthony Einfeld with Paul Sinden, Jane Lewis and Jan Miles had a 15-10 win over Jim Buchanan, Doug Kelly, Denise Kelly and Jenny Parker.

The semi finals were a bit more one sided affairs with Darren Wilkinson and his team of Gary Giblett, Gail Ecclestone and Kerry Ward defeated Sean Mawdsley side 15-8 and Eagles team proved too strong for Anthony Einfeld’s Mt Lawley team winning 19-9.

This set up for a final between two teams who had played extremely very well to make it this far. It was the mostly local side of Eagles who had the better of the opening stages as they lead 5-0 after just 2 ends.

Wilkinson and his South West side made up of players from Eaton and Bunbury were able to steady and get into the match albeit trailing 6-3 after 5 ends.

Eagles team then put a few ends together to lead 10-3 and just when it looked like they may run away with it a big end by Wilkinson saw them come steaming back into contention with a score of 6 shots to hit the lead 11-10 with just 5 ends to play.

However big credit to the Eagles team who steadied themselves and played well winning four of the last five ends and take the title 17-12.

Mixed Masters Pairs

Loftus and Savell win mixed pairs

by Aaron Delaporte On a rainy weekend the luxury of having a 10 rink indoor surface at Stirling Bowling Club was never more evident as the 40 teams that took to the green found out when they competed in the 2021 Mixed Masters Pairs, Sunday 3rd October 2021.

The champions were the Osborne Park team of Shane Loftus and Julie Savell who combined superbly to take the title.

Play began on Friday evening where the first 20 teams in sections of four saw five qualifiers progress followed by Saturday sectional play with another five strong teams progressing after three sectional rounds.

The champions Loftus and Savell had possibly their toughest scare in the sectional stage when the defending champions Cody and Hailey Packer were a late withdrawal due to illness they had a 9 all draw with husband and wife team of Paul and Lisa Smith from Perth and Tattersalls. Luckily they had recorded a 5 shot win over Mitch Biglin and Lee Poletti (Composite).

The alignment on Sunday morning saw Matthew Whitely and Margaret Anderson (Composite) with a 14-10 win over Ryan Brown and Toni Madigan (Composite) whilst Connor Biddle and Kaitlin Tyrrell (Osborne Park) snuck home 18-17 after trailing 10-1 they picked up a 3 on the final end to defeat Kathy Gobbart and Stephen Beckwith (Composite).

This left eight remaining teams in the quarter finals. Biddle and Tyrell defeated Whitely and Anderson 18-10, Blake Nairn and Shari Solly (Composite) won 14-10 over Joe Rollnik and Nerida Porteous (Ellenbrook), Loftus and Savell defeated Rhett Butler and Julie Maxwell (Sorrento) 12-8 and finally John Slavich with his grandmother Mary Slavich (Composite) had a tight 13-12 win over Blake Butler and his girlfriend Laura Merz (Manning) 13-12.

The semi-finals saw Loftus and Savell jump out the blocks picking up a 6 on the first end against Biddle and Tyrrell. The youngsters then steadied to lift and closed in with the match at 11-11 with just a few ends to play.

However Shane Loftus found some good bowls to close it out winning 16-11. In the other match the Slavich duo always had the upper hand against Nairn and Solly winning 13-7.

In what looked a promising final over 15 ends Mary Slavich who as a spritely 87 year old may have just been feeling the effects of playing in her sixth match across two days as she wasn’t quite at her best with Julie Savell showing great consistency in the leaders dual.

Skip John Slavich found it tough to remedy the situation which along with the excellent play of his opposition Shane Loftus the final became a one sided affair. Loftus and Savell much too good in the end winning 22-2 and deservedly lifting the trophy as the 2021 champions. Congratulations to the Stirling Bowling club for a well run event.

Player contracts announced

by Val Febbo Bowls Australia’s (BA) National Selectors have made additions to the National Squads for 2022, with five players added to the list of High Performance program contracted players.

South Australia’s Kate Argent-Bowden has been promoted into the Emerging Jackaroos squad from the Pathways team.

The 16-year-old has enjoyed a stellar year following a run to the Under-18 girls’ singles Australian Open title in June, as well as claiming the South Australian state singles championship earlier this year.

2018 Australian Open Under-18 girls’ victor Jessie Cottell and West Australian trio Ruby Leggett, Jack East and Segan Pasalich are have been welcomed into the Pathways Squad.

The finalised Para-Squad will be announced following a mid-November trial held by the high performance program.

National Coach Gary Willis is buoyed by the 2022 list, and is excited at what it will bring ahead of a stacked calendar of events, including the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, noting that Argent-Bowden’s commitment has been exemplary.

I am ecstatic for Kate, her results and commitment to the HP program have been sensational, I’m so proud of her efforts and look forward to her progression,” Willis said.

Mount Lawley Consistency Singles

WA s best participate in event The traditional season opener the Mt Lawley Consistency Singles was back and played on some newly installed synthetic greens and under the 4-3-2-1 scoring system for the four closest bowls each end.

A large contingent of WA's best bowlers took place in the event along with Perth Sun representative Trystan Smallacombe who flew in from the Northern Territory to compete.

Whilst Trystan won through several rounds he was eventually defeated

by John Slavich (Doubleview) in the quarter final where he was joined by surprise packet Ben Leggett (Joondalup), along with the talented duo of Daniel Trewhella (Manning) and Matthew Mitchell (Emu Point).

In the Women’s Competition all four finalists were very accomplished players in Laura Merz (Manning), Liz Matthews (Manning), Lisa Featherby (Mosman Park) and Toni Madigan (North Beach) who won their way through to the final day on Sunday September 19th.

Played in good conditions all finalists gave a great account of themselves in the semi-finals particularly in the Men’s semi’s where both games could have gone either way.

This setup for what promised to be some exciting finals. Unfortunately the matches didn’t pan out that way as Liz Matthews played a great game to out point Lisa Featherby winning 122-88 and the experience of Matthew Mitchell who claimed his first major singles title won 150-110 over a gallant 22yo Ben Leggett who certainly had the best performance of his brief career which looks to be very promising.

Liz and Matthew very deserving winners in this unique singles event.

Mt Lawley would like to congratulate all the winners and participants in this event along with their sponsors Irving & Keenan Real Estate plus all the club members at Mt Lawley who volunteered to make the event run smoothly.

Club in Profile – Exmouth Bowling Club

Exmouth – jewel of the north Exmouth, situated on the picturesque North West Cape in Western Australia, is not only the gateway to the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area, it is also home to some of the most amazing scenery and underwater wildlife WA has to offer.

Nestled in the town of Exmouth is also a very welcoming bowling club, which plays host to many WA, interstate and overseas tourists each and every year.

For those looking for a getaway, but still close enough to home, the drive into Exmouth is wonderful. Off the main road you are greeted with the beautiful sights of Coral Bay, before making your way into Exmouth where the National Park and Marine Park are simply stunning.

The Exmouth Bowling Club boasts two sand-filled synthetic greens and provides the local community, as well as tourists alike, a wonderful opportunity to play our great sport all year round.

With particular attention to the winter period, which doesn’t really feel like winter in Exmouth, the club hosts social bowls events five days per week, as well as conducting carnival events in both July and August. The numbers certainly swell during this period as the southern part of the state shivers through cold temperatures, and people jump in their caravans and head for warmer weather.

Regional Bowls Manager Clive Adams visited the club recently.

“I was so impressed at the welcoming nature of the club.

I visited on a Saturday afternoon and was immediately embraced into their social bowls activities. The rules were that we played until the sun went down, and it was great fun.

Bonus points were awarded for touchers – it was just wonderful to see a club embracing the fun side of our sport, and really enjoying themselves.”

“I was then able to stay on for Presentations of the club events held throughout the year.

It was just a wonderful celebration done in a very warm, friendly and informal style that suits the Club to the ground”.

Club President Warren Sargisson, the current Club Singles Champion, and recently part of Gascoyne Games winning team, is very proud of the club. “We pride ourselves on our welcoming nature. There’s so much to do and see in the area, and we love it when people stop in and see us – whether they are new to the sport, or they’ve been bowling for years, there’s so many people that look forward to spending time with us at the club.”

The club has an active presence on Social Media where its Facebook page advertises its barefoot bowls programs, including some wonderful food offerings. Another offering is the annual Caravan Park Challenge where the local tourist parks in the area square off in a battle on the greens.

With the club currently looking at options to refurbish or replace its synthetic greens with new surfaces, it is certainly looking towards the future. Certainly, if your future includes a trip to North West WA, put the Exmouth Bowling Club on your list for a visit – it won’t disappoint.

And in the words of Club Captain Neil Taylor, better known as “Hippie”, “make sure you shut the gate…we’ve gotta keep the emus out…they’re impossible to get out of here once they get in.” We guess every club has its challenges.

The Myth that Men don t talk One of the things that never ceases to amaze me in the job we do, is that given the right circumstances (a safe place) blokes will disclose their issues and tell their story. Every bloke that I have met has a story and/or issues and is willing to talk.

Blokes do talk but we need to acknowledge the differences between how the genders go about this. There are also some other factors that need to be considered in how we go about talking with blokes. The differences are real and we need to recognise some of the communication disparities between blokes and ladies: • Blokes only talk one third as much as ladies in a day (approx. 7,000 to 21,000 words).

The majority of females think and speak in a narrative way whereas blokes prefer dot points.

• Single word responses to questions like – yes, no, good, bad and grunting are considered responses by blokes.

• Much of the additional talk that ladies do is around describing emotions and feelings.

Therefore, in comparison to blokes, they have a sort of ‘match fitness’ around the ability to discuss emotion that we as blokes lack.

• In much the same way that the Inuit people have around 180 words to describe snow (because of its cultural and safety implications), the ladies in our life tend to operate with a larger word bank to deal with discussions around emotion and feelings.

• Blokes find it uncomfortable to talk about their emotions. We have been conditioned not to and are hard wired differently, often focusing on problem solving, providing and protecting, rather than how we feel, let alone talking about it.

To have a more productive outcome when having ‘that talk’, some other factors to consider include: • Choosing the right environment to communicate is essential. This is not when we are distressed and out of control, but when we have calmed down. Also, avoid being under the influence of alcohol (this can act as a ‘mood enhancer’ and alter our state of mind).

• Timing is an important factor to consider. Agree on a designated time to talk, avoid times when you are preoccupied with other tasks, when there is a chance of being interrupted or when there are a lot of things happening.

• Be prepared to listen. The most important part of talking is listening (I think this is an oxymoron!)

Having respect, connection and empathy with whom we are talking to will give us more of an opportunity to become an active listener.

• Getting help with having ‘that talk’ with your bloke. Don’t be afraid to seek help in having a talk with your dad, husband, son or mate i.e., use an independent person, your GP or a counsellor.

Considering the above factors and ‘giving permission’ to blokes that it’s okay to talk about things that cause us discomfort or pain may assist with blokes opening up more. Sometimes this does take time.

From little things big things grow (just like this year’s crop), blokes do talk, so sow the seed towards a meaningful conversation. It is a myth ‘that men don’t talk’ they will, just not always in the way we expect.

, Past Presidents Association

National Carnival to be held in Mandurah The Bowls Past President’s Association has been going since 1974 with the first President of the Association being Ken Edwards from West Australia.

It was designed for Past Presidents of bowling clubs to get together for fellowship and a social game of bowls, usually monthly, against like minded clubs like the…Police, Fire and Emergency Services, RSL, Master Builders and other interested bowling clubs.

In recognition of the changing nature of Club organisations, WA took the decision to widen the membership qualifications to include other members of Bowling Club executives i.e Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer who must have served at least one year in that position, as well as Presidents.

We are looking for new members who qualify under the new category.

Every two years a National carnival is held by the Past Presidents to compete against all the other States. Next year from the 4th May until the 10th May 2022 the National Carnival will be held in Western Australia, in the Mandurah region. Plans are well under way, and we would be hoping for a strong WA contingent.

To be able to play in this event you must be a financial member of the Past Presidents.
