n behalf of the Board of Bowls Australia, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Tweed Heads for the sport’s marquee carpet event, the 2017 Australian Indoor Championships.

I wish to formally acknowledge the Board and staff of Tweed Heads Bowls Club for their invaluable contribution to the staging of this coveted annual event. The club, it’s members and patrons, should be immensely proud of the effort that goes into delivering this event, and the result that is displayed to the bowling world.

We also acknowledge the work of the State and Territory Associations for staging their respective qualifying events in order to provide the calibre of entries that we see here in the field this year.

This year’s event boasts added impetus, as the 30th staging of the men’s competition and 15th running of the women’s discipline.

Once again, the nation’s finest players are in attendance to secure the coveted titles and a slice of the $30,000 prize pool, including reigning champions Jeremy Henry and Natasha Scott, Australian Open winners Nathan Pedersen and Ellen Ryan, six-time titleholder Karen Murphy and former champions Claire Turley and Jamie-Lee Worsnop, as a well as a host of other national title winners.

The semi-finals and finals of this year’s event will be showcased to the nation on free-to-air television across five episodes of The Bowls Show on SBS, from September 24 to October 22, and I encourage you all to spread the word and support this initiative.

I offer Bowls Australia’s sincere thanks and appreciation to the many officials, technical officers, markers and volunteers who will dedicate their time and expertise over the duration of this four-day tournament; your contribution is certainly valued.

Stellar collision A

galaxy of stars are set to collide this week, with some of the sport’s biggest names vying for the Australian Indoor Championships’ 15th women’s crown.

Genuine contenders are littered throughout the 32-player field, making it difficult to determine a pre-tournament favourite.

Six-time winner Karen Murphy has proven time and time again that she’s the golden girl of the tournament, but has not tasted success in the past three years, following victories from 20072009 and 2011-2013.

Reigning titleholder Natasha Scott completed the coveted indoor-outdoor double last year; claiming the Australian Open and Australian Indoor Championships singles titles, as well as a host of other accolades that saw he crowned back-to-back Australia’s number one female bowler, but no women besides Murphy has ever triumphed twice on this particular stage.

Which leads us to a couple of other former winners stalking the field, in 2004 champion Claire Turley and 2014 victor Jamie-Lee Worsnop; both have proven their mettle before, but history suggests it is another thing entirely to strike gold twice, unless your name is Karen Murphy.

Ellen Ryan enters the tournament in arguably the strongest most recent form, after securing the Australian Open’s singles and pairs titles, and a runner-up finish in the fours for good measure, just a few short months ago and a couple dozen kilometres up the road.

Rebecca Van Asch, who was overcome at the final hurdle last year, in addition to Jackaroos captain Lynsey Clarke, who earned a silver medal in 2015, and Turley, who lost in 2012.

There’s also host of other competitors ready to launch an attack on the tournament’s prized silverware, including former semi-finalist Kristy Thatcher, Bowls Premier League Melbourne Roys’ ace Tiffany Brodie, and Canadian international Kelly McKerihen, to name just a few.

Regardless of who enters the event with the pre-tournament ascendancy, and putting all history aside, the person that strings together five consecutive wins over the next four days will be the only one that can lay claim to being the Australian Indoor Championships’ 15th title winner.

Can Henry’s reign continue?

T

hree-time winner and reigning champion Jeremy Henry has a target planted firmly on his back as the man to beat in the 30th staging of the Australian Indoor Championships this week, but challengers are lining up from all angles.

Henry surpassed three of the sport’s most credentialed exponents, in Ian Schuback, Kelvin Kerkow and Rex Johnson, when he notched up his third victory on this Tweed carpet just 12 months ago, and is now only eclipsed by nine-time winner Steve Glasson and six-time champion Karen Murphy as the event’s most prolific player.

He is also arguably the sport’s pre-eminent carpet player, having also claimed an astonishing five World Cup titles in just six years on his home deck at Warilla, after first securing passage to the international event in 2012 by virtue of his Australian Indoor Championships victory the year before.

The former Northern Irish flag barrier doesn’t need to prevail on the national stage this week to earn a crack at his sixth World Cup title, with defending champions given automatic admission, which means should Henry make this week’s final, his opponent will also earn a World Cup berth regardless of the result.

Among those lining up dethrone Henry is his Warilla clubmate Aron Teys, who looms ominously in the same half of the draw, with the pair a strong chance to meet in the semi-final stages.

In addition to Teys, there’s another Australian Open men’s singles winner lurking the field that would relish the chance to obtain the rare indoor-outdoor double, in recent winner Nathan Pedersen.

Finishing one spot higher than fourth-placed Pedersen on this year’s national ranking system was Victoria’s Gary Ball, who had a blistering year in rankings events, and as such goes into this week’s tournament as the third seed.

A swag of rising New South Wales stars round out the list of seeded players looking to stake a claim on the silverware, including Sydney Lions two-time BPL winner Ben Twist, former Australian Champion of Champion pairs winner Carl Healey, former Australian under-25 representative David Ferguson and recent Australian Open singles semi-finalist Jesse Noronha.

The draw is smattered with other contenders who could easily escape the carnage of the sets-play, knockout format to hoist the trophy aloft after five rounds, but standing in their way is a menacing Henry, intent on reclaiming his throne.
