n behalf of the Board and staff of Bowls Australia, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 2018 Australian Indoor Championships at the magnificent Tweed Heads Bowls Club.

After the success of the recent $250,000 Australian Open we are back, this time on the Queensland/ New South Wales border for what is regarded as the nation’s premier indoor tournament.

Once again Australia’s finest players are in attendance, including defending champions Rebecca Van Asch and David Ferguson, internationals such as Ryan Bester and Val Smith and a host of talented young Australian stars looking to get their hands on the coveted trophy.

We sincerely thank Tweed Heads Bowls Club for staging the Australian Indoor Championships for the 31st consecutive year, whilst we also acknowledge the tireless work of the

State and Territory associations for staging their respective qualifying tournaments, and look forward to another successful event at this wonderful facility.

To the many officials, International Technical Officials and Tweed Heads members and staff who will be working tirelessly over the duration of the Championships, I would like to thank you for your invaluable contribution and ensure you you’re efforts do not go unnoticed.

Other internationals in this year’s field, Kelly McKerihen (Canada), last year’s runner-up, has drawn a threatening first round match up with New South Wales’ Natalie Noronha, Val Smith (New Zealand) will face local hope Adele Pershouse (QLD) whilst the Canadian Master Blaster Ryan Bester looms at the bottom of the draw as the tournament’s second seed.

Australian Jackaroos Carla Krizanic (VIC), Aaron Teys (NSW), Ray Pearse (NSW), Chloe Stewart (QLD) and Ellen Ryan (NSW) all have stellar singles records and would be slight favourites heading into their opening encounters; however they will need to be on their games in this sets play format and targets on their backs.

A few other names to keep a close eye on in the women’s draw, Dawn Hayman (NSW) and Jessica Srisamruaybai (QLD) have both been named in the Australian Emerging Jackaroos Squad, Sarah Boddington is the current New South Wales Indoor Singles Champion and Colleen Orr from the Northern Territory is the Australian Champion of

Champion Singles winner and will represent Australia at the World Champion of Champions in November this year.

In the men’s field Ray Pearse will have his work cut out for him in the opening round against Queensland’s Alex Murtagh, former Perth Suns team mates Matt Ellul (VIC) and Clive Adams (WA) will do battle in round one, however this year’s tournament smoky goes to Chris Herden (NSW) off the back of his victory in the 2018 Australian Open Pairs.

This Australian Indoor Championship will have a different feel without the presence of ‘King of the Indoor’ Jeremy Henry and 6-time winner Karen Murphy. The changing of the guard will be welcomed by fellow competitors all wanting to get their hands on the illustrious trophy.

There is a lot to play for with our two champions leaving $6000 richer, 90 Bowls Australia Ranking Points, an entry into the prestigious World Cup at Warilla where they will wear the green and gold representing Australia and of course direct entry into next year’s Australian Indoor Championships.

Hard to pick a winner in such a quality field but what we do know is we will enjoy the spectacle these bowlers will put on for us here at Tweed Heads this week.
