THIS IS MY TEAM Hi, I’m Karen Murphy and this photo demonstrates how much I love playing bowls and being in a winning team. My bowls career has taken me all around the world and I have met the most wonderful people involved in bowls. I recently competed in my 5th Commonwealth Games and representing Australia is a dream come true. It is a real emotional and exciting experience. #bpl10 Welcome to the tenth instalment of the Bowls Premier League (BPL)!

Designed by Jejak Graphics: jejak@bigpond.com

On behalf of the Board and staff of Bowls Australia, it gives me great pleasure in welcoming you back to the magnificent Club Pine Rivers in Brisbane, Queensland. The BPL is the sport’s revered made-fortelevision event having established itself as one of the most prestigious, exciting and innovative bowls events over many years. It’s the 20-20 of bowls. Fast, loud and it attracts the world’s best bowlers, appealing to non-bowlers who once upon a time may have seen the sport in a different light. The players have embraced the BPL format and done a terrific job entertaining the crowds at the host venues and those back at home tuning into the live broadcast on Fox Sports, Kayo Sports and Sky Sport NZ. BPL10 will see the introduction of three new teams in the (Adelaide Bowling Club)

Adelaide Pioneers, (Dandenong Club) Melbourne Pulse and (Tweed Heads Bowls Club) Tweed Heads Ospreys. Their inclusion will no doubt only enhance the competition, bringing the sport into new markets in South Australia, South East Melbourne and the NSW/QLD border region of Tweed Heads. As mentioned, Club Pine Rivers will again resume hosting rights of the event and they will do so for the next three years in November, with Moama Bowling Club on the NSW/VIC border recently announced as the alternate February host venue for the BPL going forward. The BPL is a highlight on the bowls calendar and I trust supporters of the teams will enjoy the 14 rounds of action-packed bowls this week at this amazing facility. To the officials and volunteers who will be working tirelessly over the course of the week, I also thank you for your invaluable services and contribution to the

sport of bowls. I trust you will enjoy your involvement and the opportunity to be close to the action. Finally, I would like to thank Bowls Australia’s wonderful partners whose continued support and contributions ultimately allow us to stage such renowned events. In particular, I wish to make special mention of our BPL team licensees, host venue Club Pine Rivers, Commonwealth Games Australia, Australian Institute of Sport, Domina BCiB, Stockland Retirement Living, Aero Bowls, Bolton Clarke, BLK and MakMax. IT’S BIGGER and BETTER than ever before The Bowls Premier League is back and it’s safe to say that the tenth instalment of the sport’s made-for-television showpiece event is set for it’s biggest event to date. Three new teams have been added to the eight-team competition, with the Adelaide Pioneers, Melbourne Pulse and Tweed Heads Ospreys the new faces when #BPL10 hits Queensland’s Club Pine Rivers. Each team will bring with them a blend of previous BPL experience and freshness to the competition within their playing rosters, with the likes of Wayne Ruediger & Scott Thulborn (Pioneers), Barrie Lester & Natasha Scott (Pulse) and Aaron Teys (Ospreys) set to spearhead their respective licenses. Joining them are fresh faces to the event in Rebecca Van Asch (Pioneers), Gary Kelly

(Pulse) and Chloe Stewart & Kurt Brown (Ospreys). The Pioneers, Pulse and Ospreys will join established BPL teams in the hometown Brisbane Pirates, Melbourne Roys, Murray Steamers, Perth Suns and Sydney Lions, with the Illawarra Gorillas, NZ Blackjacks and Gold Coast Hawks opting not to compete in BPL10. Elsewhere, the standard of female bowlers is arguably the best it has ever been since the introduction of a mandatory female squad member at BPL04. All eight female bowlers in the competition are current BCiB Australian Jackaroos, with over half in Rebecca Van Asch, Kelsey Cottrell, Natasha Scott, Carla Krizanic and Karen Murphy, Commonwealth Games and World Championship gold medallists, while the likes of Chloe Stewart, Kristina Krstic and Ellen Ryan are rising stars in the sport. Joining their female counterparts are some of

the biggest names in men’s bowls. Scot Alex Marshall MBE returns to steer the ship for the Brisbane Pirates, Northern Ireland’s Gary Kelly will suit up for the Melbourne Pulse following a stirring run of form since his relocation to Australia early in the year, former Jackaroo Matt Flapper makes a return to the Melbourne Roys who also boast Commonwealth Games Singles gold medallist Aaron Wilson, 2017/18 Male Bowler of the Year David Ferguson joins Ryan Bester in a formidable Murray Steamers outfit, Lee Schraner and Cody Packer add some star power to a re-jigged Perth Suns outfit, while the biggest move of all is the return of Aron Sherriff to the Sydney Lions, the team he previously won a BPL three-peat with. The BPL is staged biannually, at Queensland’s Club Pine Rivers in November and New South Wales/Victoria border club Moama in February. 5

Adelaide pioneers’ Winning Formula Along with the two other fresh additions to the competition in the Melbourne Pulse and Tweed Heads Ospreys, the Adelaide Pioneers can fancy themselves as a serious contender to win the event. Led by Wayne Ruediger and Scott Thulborn, the South Australian duo who have experienced the BPL before, the Pioneers are further boosted by the acquisition of Rebecca Van Asch, who has arguably been one of the most in-form female bowlers in the world over the past two years.

DOB: 15/8/1976 Club: Grange, SA Achievements:

All three players are experienced on the international scene and loom as a formidable trio ahead of the Pioneers’ BPL debut.

As the oldest club in South Australia, Adelaide BC will bring a rich history to the competition as the license holders of the Adelaide Pioneers, aptly named in recognition of the club’s stature in the state. Located within Rymill Park in the eastern parklands, Adelaide is one of the powerhouse clubs in the state, home to some of South Australia’s most prominent bowlers. The club has taken huge strides both on and off the green in recent years, leading to their hosting of the 2019 and 2020 World Singles Champion of Champions. 11

Brisbane pirates’ Winning Formula The obvious Alex Marshall MBE effect looms large for the Pirates, but it is there parochial home support that is perhaps their biggest drawcard. Blessed with the genius of the Great Scot, a six-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist, as well as the methodical duo of Kelsey Cottrell and the underrated Michael Breen, it’s the crowd that adds such unquantifiable weight to their chances. Despite making the final in New Zealand at BPL09, their last BPL title came a year ago at home in BPL08 and it was the frenetic Club Pine Rivers support that saw them topple the Murray Steamers at the death, despite having the harder run to the Final. Expect Marshall, Cottrell and Breen to thrive on their home patch.

BPL08 was a huge success for the Club Pine Rivers license, not only seeing their Brisbane Pirates claim a memorable victory at their home venue, but the club itself helped stage the biggest and best BPL to date. The two magnificent covered synthetic greens were conducive to world-class bowls, the club was buzzing with huge crowds, while the staff and volunteers worked overtime to ensure the event was a huge success.

Melbourne Pulse’s Winning Formula It’s quite the debut trio for the Pulse, with Northern Irishman Gary Kelly, former Roy Barrie Lester and reigning Australian Open Women’s Singles champion Natasha Scott set to fire. The Dandenong Club owned license have been impressive in the Ultimate Bowls Championships, having won the inaugural event at Warilla earlier in the year, with that team led by the in-form Kelly and Lester. Returning to the competition for the first time since her stint with Brisbane from BPL04-05, Scott adds some aggression to the team and will work nicely in tandem with either Kelly or Lester. All three players are built for the BPL, so the key ingredient will be getting their combinations right and for Kelly and Lester in particular, to harness their biggame performances as a pairing in the UBC.

Following on from a successful tilt in the Ultimate Bowls Championships and the unveiling of their newly completed undercover bowls facility, Dandenong Club have stepped up to the BPL in the competition’s tenth staging this November. The Dandenong Club are a premier indoor/outdoor venue in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne, boasting a brand new undercover green which has already hosted many prestigious events in the state. The Melbourne Pulse will be the second team, alongside the Roys, to hail from Victoria, adding a spicy Melbourne Derby to the schedule. 15

Melbourne Roys’ Winning Formula Despite the loss of Barrie Lester, the Roys have brought in a handy replacement in Victorian state teammate Matthew Flapper, no stranger to the BPL and the Roys having played three seasons with the team in the early days of the competition. Flanked by Aaron Wilson and Carla Krizanic, the Roys have quite the blend of aggression and control. Again, combinations become important with either Wilson or Flapper accustomed to the skip role and so it will be up to coach Ian Ewing to utilise their skillsets efficiently across the four days of competition. Flapper in particular provides such a team-lifting and imposing presence, which should provide confidence for Wilson and Krizanic especially in the big moments.

The club is an amalgamation of the North Fitzroy/Fitzroy Bowling Club (formed in 1877), the Victoria Bowling Club (formed 1876) and the Edinburgh Park Ladies Club (formed 1947). The Melbourne Roys have kept with the tradition to the “Fitzroy name, maintaining the nickname ‘Roys’. Murray’s steamers’ Winning Formula With all the big additions coming in at #BPL10, both teams and marquee players, the signing of New South Welshman David Ferguson is perhaps the most underrated acquisition across the board. Ferguson has been a decorated player in the state and national bowls scene for some time now and will slot in nicely alongside Ryan Bester and Ellen Ryan. The Steamers have long been consistent performers in the BPL and they are arguably now even more strong in their playing roster, with all three players a picture of consistency in their own personal careers.

Perth suns’ Winning Formula The Suns have boldly opted for two fresh faces to join mainstay Kristina Krstic in the team, with Victorian Lee Schraner and West Australian Cody Packer drafted into the Suns line-up. Schraner brings considerable experience and class to the team, having been a notable big-game performer across many events over the past 12-18 months, while on his debut on the big stage, Packer adds some x-factor and further WA heritage to the team.

Opting for a blend of homegrown talent and marquee imports, the Suns have provided plenty of parochial fanfare and colour to the BPL, enjoying a stirring run to the finals last time the event was held at Club Pine Rivers. Often tagged as ‘underdogs’ in the event, the Suns haven’t tasted a winning final since the early days of the competition and will be hoping their fortunes change this time around in #BPL10.

Sydney lions’ Winning Formula The Return of the (Lion) King. Aron Sherriff returns to the Sydney Lions having spent the past two BPL seasons with the Gold Coast Hawks, reuniting with Karen Murphy and Ben Twist whom he won three successive BPL titles with from BPL0406. Sherriff is arguably the most successful BPL exponent in the event’s history, with two tournament MVPs to his name along with four titles with two different licenses. Couple Sherriff’s return with the form of Karen Murphy, who recently made a run to the 2019 Australian Indoor Championships Final, and the Lions may have just found what they were missing after a few lean seasons.
