Bowls Australia is proud to be here at the magnificent Club Pine Rivers to present the sporting world with another exhilarating instalment of the sport’s made-for-television product, the Bowls Premier League. This week marks the sixth staging of the BPL competition, and the fifth time it has been held here at what could be considered the home of the BPL, Club Pine Rivers. I would like to express my appreciation to Club Pine Rivers, Bowls WA, Club Mount Lewis, Fitzroy Victoria Bowling and Sports Club, Club Helensvale, Moama Bowling Club, Bowls NZ and for the first time Warilla Bowls and Recreation Club for embracing the BPL and committing eight powerhouse teams to the sixth instalment of this world class event. It is fantastic to see a new team enter the fold this event, in the Illawarra Gorillas, who boast a star-studded team in their first foray into the fast-paced competition, and my thanks goes to Warilla Bowls and Recreation Club for their involvement. 24 players, 16 men and eight women, will contest this $100,000 event and among them recent world champions, Commonwealth Games gold medallist and future household names; we will no doubt be treated to a feast of bowls that is broadcast live around Australia and New Zealand. Once again the world’s best female bowlers will compete against and alongside men on the biggest stage, something that is quite unique to bowls in the sporting landscape and one of many reasons why this competition is so enjoyable and successful. The continuation of a live telecast by Bowls Australia’s official Pay-TV broadcast partner, Fox Sports, and Sky Sports in New Zealand have allowed the sport of bowls to be delivered directly into the homes of Australian and New Zealand bowls fans, and more importantly non bowls fans that now 2

It took a number of years to develop the BPL with the view that it would be used as a tool to attract more people of all ages to participate in our great sport, and six years down the track, after five enthralling instalments of BPL, participation in Australia continues to rise and the misconceptions of the sport continue to be shattered and remoulded. New initiatives have ensured BPL will grow; including the recent introduction of a portable rink to take the world’s most exciting event outside of a traditional bowls arena. Bowls Australia has created a more consumable product to watch and the opportunity for people to play bowls in a short, concise, succinct timeframe that suits the majority of society’s modern day busy lifestyles. For the first time, we have also benefited from the introduction of a new grass-roots lead-in product to the BPL, in the BPL Cup; which will culminate here this week with the national final. The BPL Cup takes the BPL format directly to clubland and allows players of all skilllevels and ability to enjoy the game that they see on television. I congratulate all of the state and territory winners that have progressed through to these National BPL Cup Finals and encourage you all to spread the message and promote the initiative so that it can continue to grow and prosper in the second year. Bowls Australia also continues to roll out Jack Attack in clubs around the country, and has been successful in converting casual barefoot bowlers into bowling members, and Jr. Jack Attack, which has introduced a new audience to the sport through its delivery in schools Australia wide. Bowls is a sport for life and that is demonstrated by the BPL’s wide age demographic of competitors, some young rising stars of the sport and others who have been playing and enjoying the sport for decades. The stage is set

for the return of the $100,000 Bowls Premier League to Club Pine Rivers. The eagerly anticipated staging of BPL06 features the strongest field ever assembled, with a new team, in the Illawarra Gorillas, keen to muscle in on the competition, the return of world’s best player following a three-event absence, and sweeping changes to the personnel of some of the other six hopeful teams. The Gorillas have secured the services of five-time World Cup winner Jeremy Henry alongside 2015 Australian Open winner Aaron Teys and Scottish international Kay Moran in a star-studded playing roster; that’s some serious fire-power and reminiscent of the calibre of the Murray Steamers contingent when they steamrolled the event back in their first event, BPL02.

Speaking of the Steamers, the inception of a new team would usually be the biggest talking point ahead of a competition, but some would argue that the reappearance of Alex Marshall MBE has generated the most chatter amongst the bowls fraternity pre-event.

Similarly, the Blundstone Melbourne Roys have made some significant inclusions to their contingent, securing two of the sport’s marquee players for their maiden Bowls Premier League appearances, in Australia’s number one male and female bowlers, Barrie Lester and Carla Krizanic.

Marshall left crowds and players alike in awe of his skill when he graced these greens three years ago during BPL02, where an MVP-winning performance helped guide the Steamers to a maiden title in their first year.

Joining them just happens to be a man that has quickly become the barometer for Australia’s success on the world stage, in International Bowler of the Year Aaron Wilson.

The multiple Commonwealth Games gold medallist and world champion has changed his allegiances this year though, boarding the Pirates’ ship in an attempt to help them plunder their first trophy since the inaugural event, way back in 2013.

There’s also big changes in store for the perennial powerhouse teams, in the BCiB Insurance Brokers Sydney Lions and New Zealand Blackjacks.

Joining Marshall in the Moreton Bay Brisbane Pirates’ camp is Australian international stalwart Kelsey Cottrell, who cut her teeth in the BPL format last February as a late call-up for the Club Helensvale Gold Coast Hawks, and local favourite and former Australian Open pairs champion Robbie Wild, who

Last year’s runners-up, and BPL03’s winning team, the Blackjacks have also confirmed a

positional change, with world champion Ali Forsyth set to return in an effort to go one step further than February’s BLP05. Continuing the theme, the Club Helensvale Gold Coast Hawks have also made one change to their roster, in an attempt to claim a maiden title. Australian Jackaroos Captain Lynsey Clarke has re-joined the Hawks’ nest after missing the last event in New Zealand due to logistical complications, and will replace Kelsey Cottrell who took up her spot in the eleventh hour. The Moama Bowls Club Murray Steamers and BLK Perth Suns have both elected to retain the same players, with an unchanged playing line-up confirmed for BPL06, while both bringing in new coaching personnel, in Zane Mikin-Laurie and Lindsay Thorn respectively, as they attempt to fine-tune their campaigns. With teams of that calibre, BPL06 is sure to be one of the most fiercely contested bowls events ever shown on television, and with $100,000 on the line and 20-hours of broadcast action across the four nights, whether you’re watching at home or at Club Pine Rivers, you’re in for a treat. 3

The Gold Coast Hawks will be led rinkside by another one of their international stars, Nathan Rice who assumes the coaching duties for a second successive event.

Team background The Fitzroy Victoria Bowling and Sports Club is part of the sporting precinct in the City of Yarra’s historic Edinburgh Gardens. The club is an amalgamation of the North Fitzroy/Fitzroy Bowling Club, (formed 1877), the Victoria Bowling Club (formed 1876) and the Edinburgh Park Ladies Club (formed 1947). The Blundstone Melbourne Roys have kept with tradition to the ‘Fitzroy’ name, maintaining the nickname ‘Roys’. 10

Fours years later and Bester and Walker are still getting the job done for the only regional franchise in the competition and they are joined for a third event by Australia’s brightest young star, Ellen Ryan.
