Welcome to the 2017 Trans Tasman O
n behalf of the Board and staff of Bowls Australia, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you here to Broadbeach Bowls Club for the second Trans Tasman competition of 2017. The Trans Tasman rivalry is as strong in bowls as it is in any other sport and once again the competition between the two countries, represented by 54 competitors in total, promises to be another fiercely contested but enjoyable encounter. This staging of the Trans Tasman happens to be the last opportunity for Selectors of both nations to cast an eye over their charges during an international competition before the highly anticipated Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in April next year. This event boasts so much prestige that it’s difficult to imagine any need for added impetus, but with a potential ticket to the Commonwealth Games on the line for all competitors this final audition is sure to be one of the highest
calibre contests staged between the revered Australian Jackaroos and respected New Zealand Blackjacks. I would like to take this opportunity to recognise the invaluable contribution many will make to the staging of this event, particularly the International Technical Officials, umpires, markers, volunteers, greenskeepers and the board and members of the Broadbeach Bulls. I also acknowledge all players, from both sides of the Tasman, who will play in milestone matches during the staging of this event, and in particular, I would like to highlight and congratulate Australia’s Karen Murphy, who will notch up an unprecedented 600th international appearance for the Australian Jackaroos. Furthermore, I wish to convey my thanks and appreciation for the support received from Bowls Australia’s partner organisations, including the Australian Sports Commission, Australian Institute
of Sport, Tourism and Events Queensland, the City of Gold Coast, Commonwealth Games Australia, Cruiseabout, Stockland Retirement Living, Bolton Clarke, BCiB Insurance Brokers, Good Sports, BLK and MakMax. We all look forward to what will surely be a world class event featuring the sport’s pre-eminent players and providing spectators with a glimpse of what to expect at next year’s pinnacle event, GC2018. Commonwealth Games berths on the line A
ustralia and New Zealand’s Commonwealth Games preparations will hit overdrive this week as the two nations look to finalise their playing contingents ahead of the sport’s biggest event. Just five-and-a-half months after last doing battle, the Australian Jackaroos and New Zealand Blackjacks have returned to the home of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in an attempt to put the finishing touches on their international preparations, and to decide once and for all who will be given the ultimate honour of wearing their nation’s stripes at the highly anticipation GC2018. Just 146 days remain until the delivery of the first bowl at GC2018, and with no further international event on the horizon for either team between now and then, this Trans Tasman Test Series certainly boasts added impetus. New Zealand will be eager to make amends from their last performance here in June, where Australia claimed 14 out of 15 individual test wins, resulting in the green and gold contingent sweeping all seven trophies on offer; one for each event in addition to the Overall Open Trophy and Overall Development Trophy silverware. The Blackjacks will take some comfort from the fact that the ledger has been reset and the past is behind them, with nothing more important than a strong showing here this week. The Jackaroos will be eager to start this event the same way they left off in June, but are well aware of the calibre of opponent ahead of them, in the powerhouse New Zealand contingent. A victory here in the lead-up to GC2018 will surely instil confidence among either High Performance team, but whoever walks off the green victorious this week
will then be faced with the daunting job of culling their winning playing roster to just 10 able-bodied and 5 para-sport competitors for next April. Best of luck to all players from both sides of the Tasman, and similarly, best of luck to each country’s National Selectors, who have the enormous and thankless task ahead of them in reducing these starstudded lists. Bowls Australia acknowledges the assistance and funding provided by Commonwealth Games Australia to Bowls Australia for athletes in the “Gold Coast GOLD” and “NextGEN AUSComGames” programs. The Gold Coast GOLD program was devised by the CGA to maximise podium performances at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and assist athletes who are expected to be nominated for selection to the 2018 Australian Team. NextGEN AUSComGames was devised to provide assistance to junior players who have been identified as potential 2018 or 2022 Commonwealth Games level athletes.
