2016 AUSTRALIAN open

WELCOME the Minister for Tourism and Major Events, The Hon Kate Jones MP

the Mayor of the The president of City of Gold Coast, Bowls Australia His Worship Cr Nigel Smith Tom Tate

Welcome to the beautiful Gold Coast and Queensland for the 2016 Australian Open.

As Mayor, it gives me great pleasure to welcome competitors, officials, organisers, supporters and sponsors to the City of Gold Coast for the 2016 Australian Open.

On behalf of the Board and staff of Bowls Australia, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you back to the City of the Gold Coast for the $250,000 14 day festival of bowls.

The Gold Coast is a city full of open spaces, extensive waterways and beaches – ideal for those seeking an active, sporting lifestyle. So it comes as no surprise that Gold Coasters love their sport – as both participants and spectators. This enthusiasm resonates throughout the local, national and international community and is why the Gold Coast is fast becoming the preferred location to hold major sporting events.

The Australian Open has certainly become the nation’s marquee tournament and will provide the region with an unparalleled opportunity to see the best the sport has to offer. We are grateful to have Fox Sports covering finals action LIVE, with SBS also showcasing a highlights package on the Bowls Show.

The Australian Open is a highlight on the world lawn bowls calendar and draws competitors from across Australia and the world. Last year the Australian Open was proudly hosted for the first time on the Gold Coast and delivered the best participation numbers in the event’s 11 year history. The 14 day tournament will be played across 15 bowling clubs with the final hosted at the 2018 Commonwealth Games venue Broadbeach Bowls Club. The Palaszczuk Government is proud to support this event through Tourism and Events Queensland as part of Queensland’s It’s Live! events calendar. I encourage visitors to explore the diverse attractions available throughout the Gold Coast, Queensland’s Famous for Fun destination. Congratulations to Bowls Australia on hosting this fantastic event on the Gold Coast and good luck to all competitors.

When it comes to bowls, the sport has no greater supporter than the Gold Coast, with bowls clubs dotted across nearly every corner of the city. With the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games™ only around the corner, and with lawn bowls being one of the Games’ competition sports, you can be assured that the Gold Coast is pumped and ready to embrace the sport’s qualities of competitiveness, sportsmanship and friendship. During your time here, I would encourage you to take the opportunity to enjoy some of our award-winning restaurants and vibrant nightlife – there is something on offer for everyone. Regardless of your involvement in this year’s event I hope you will enjoy your time in the city and good luck to everyone competing. Tom Tate Mayor

I would like to express my sincere thanks to the 15 Gold Coast bowling clubs and their members for hosting this prestigious event. A special congratulations goes to the Broadbeach Bowling Club which has undergone a splendid makeover in preparation for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. To the officials and volunteers who will be working tirelessly over the next fortnight, I also thank you for your invaluable services and contribution to the sport of bowls. I trust you will enjoy your involvement and the opportunity to be close to the action. Finally, I would like to thank Bowls Australia’s wonderful partners whose continuing support and contributions ultimately allows us to stage such renowned events. In particular, I wish to make special mention of Tourism and Events Queensland, the City of Gold Coast, the Australian Sports Commission, BCiB, Aero Bowls, Asics, BLK, MakMax, Yours magazine, New Age Caravans, RDNS, Stockland and the Australian Commonwealth Games Association. Good luck to the all competitors. Nigel Smith Bowls Australia President

W

ell, here we are again on the beautiful Gold Coast set for another instalment of the world’s biggest festival

of bowls.

The $250,000 Australian Open has been a much-anticipated event since we departed the Gold Coast last year following an outstanding inaugural staging of the world’s richest bowls tournament in Australia’s Sunshine State. The 2016 Australian Open is set to be bigger and better with an increase in prize money to a quarter of a million dollars, new events such as the Yours Magazine Over 60s Men’s and Women’s Pairs, two new host clubs and a reviewed prize money distribution that will see over 530 competitors share a slice of the prize pool. Broadbeach Bowls Club, the home of the 2018 Commonwealth Games and our Australian Open finals venue, has undergone a makeover since we were here last; however something that hasn’t changed is the wide range of bowlers who

have made their way to the Gold Coast to compete. The Australian Open is just that, an event that is open to everyone and this year’s competition will boast in the vicinity of 2000 bowlers from around Australia and all over the world competing to etch their names into the history books during the 12th staging of the Open.

Those 2000 bowlers and the array of spectators who will be keen to catch a glimpse of the action will create the festival like atmosphere we saw last year. The trade stand outside Broadbeach Bowls Club will be your one stop shop for all your bowls accessories and Australian Open merchandise. The enormity of the Australian Open is made possible courtesy of the fantastic

support shown by Tourism and Events Queensland and the City of the Gold Coast. The best way to show your appreciation is to enjoy everything the Gold Coast has to offer; enjoy the beautiful beaches, the fine dining, the amazing theme parks and trendy cafes and don’t forget to tell everyone how much you enjoyed your Gold Coast holiday and enjoyed participating in this year’s Australian Open. Last year’s Australian Open unearthed new stars, showcased world-class bowls, allowed grassroots bowlers the chance to mix it with the best the sport has to offer, provided a wonderful spectacle for viewers of the live Fox Sports telecast and this year will be no different. We have promised this Australian Open to be bigger and better, and that is what we will deliver. Good luck to everyone competing, thankyou to all who are volunteering and fingers crossed the Gold Coast puts on some beautiful weather for us all!

DESTINATION GOLD COAST

W

hile the Gold Coast’s greens have lured the nation’s premier bowls event for the second consecutive year, it’s the city’s pristine sandy beaches, evolving dining scene and myriad of activities and events that promise to entertain before, during and after the event. The Gold Coast has long laid claim to being the birthplace of the Aussie beach holiday and deservedly so. The Gold Coast is one of the nation’s most magnificent coastal destinations and according to TripAdvisor, is home to two of Australia’s top ten beaches. With 21 patrolled beaches to explore, each with their own personality, you’re sure to find your ideal slice of seaside bliss. The city’s world class breaks have produced more surfing champions than anywhere else on earth, cementing the Gold Coast as the home of Australian surfing. An early morning trip to Coolangatta or Burleigh Heads will quickly show that surfing is very much entrenched in daily life.

rainforest provides a welcome pit stop for adventurers and novices alike. The Gold Coast is also home to some premier inshore diving sites, boasting an abundance and diversity of fish life which is unequalled by any other city in Australia.

Natural Bridge

While notorious for its beaches, it’s the emerging dining scene which is sparking new interest in the city by the sea. The Gold Coast is increasingly becoming known as a vibrant food destination, having earned some of Australia’s most respected food and wine awards. For the prominent chefs, restauranteurs and local producers who now call the Gold Coast home, the focus is undeniably on ‘fresh’ and ‘local’. Think seafood served straight off the trawler, internationally acclaimed beef paired with local boutique wines sourced from the hinterland. The city’s ode to Asia is prominent, with several exciting restaurants and notable chefs, including Chase Kojima (Kiyomi) and Ben Bertei (Rick Shores) breathing new life into oriental cuisine.

Young surfer at Snapper Rocks

The many waterways leading to the beaches are just as exceptional. Each morning, kayakers and paddle boarders can be found gliding along inlets and rivers, while ancient rock pools and cascading waterfalls hidden in the UNESCO World Heritage listed

Beer lovers rejoice! The Gold Coast is quickly establishing itself as the epicentre of the craft beer movement. With Burleigh Brewing at the helm and newcomers Balter Brewing, the brainchild of surfers and Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Bede Durbidge and Josh Kerr, the Coast’s craft beer scene is gaining momentum and the best news, their breweries are open to the public.

Whether a first time or a returning visitor, the Gold Coast has something to suit. Check out some of the free events, such as Cooly Rocks On (3 – 13 June 2016) or the Broadbeach Country Music Festival (17 – 19 June 2016). Take to the hills for wine and cheese tasting, hiking or for the more adventurous, try your hand at the longest zip line tour in the Southern Hemisphere. Make like a local and hire a surfboard, paddle board, jet ski or a kayak to admire the city from the water. Meander any one of the many markets to pick up a unique piece of the Gold Coast or take a culinary sojourn through the streets of Thailand or Barcelona at the NightQuarter or Miami Markets. From theme parks to whale watching, seafood barbecues by the beach to cuddling koalas and everything in between, there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained on the Gold Coast. Everything you need to know about

jack attack Y

ou may have heard about this thing called Jack Attack, but you aren’t exactly sure what is it? Jack Attack is a national participation program designed by Bowls Australia to help transition casual barefoot bowlers into full playing members of your club, or simply give social players a reason to keep coming back. No doubt you would have heard of cricket’s Twenty20 and tennis’ Fast4 competitions; well now Bowls has Jack Attack! The annual National Bowls Census Report outlines that traditional membership numbers have been dropping for years, but bowls participation is rapidly increasing. Which begs the question; why are so many people playing bowls but choosing not to become full bowling members? One theory is that the demographic of most casual barefoot bowlers don’t have the time to commit to long pennant seasons or mid-week competitions during work hours – the result of a growing timepoor population and increase in competing interests and recreational opportunities. Jack Attack is that ‘in between’ competition that gives barefoot bowlers a

taste of a structured bowls game that is fast paced, has a shorter format and runs for just six to eight weeks. Over 100 clubs around Australia have already signed up to Jack Attack and received their promotional flyers and playing cards to get their comps kicked off. These clubs are reaping the benefits of having extra foot traffic through their doors, with the majority opting to host their competitions at night to allow for those people still in the workforce to participate. Other sports like netball, touch football, indoor cricket and futsal all offer night competitions for adults and this is where bowls can really benefit, especially in the warmer months. Have you got existing members who can’t commit to pennant but still crave an avenue to play semi-competitively? They might be interested in trying Jack Attack. The format of two bowl triples with substitutions permitted, two sets of five ends, a sudden death tie-breaker if required, and a duration of play of just 6075 minutes is a fun format for all bowlers. Speak to your Regional Bowls Manager

about how you can incorporate Jack Attack into your club for members and non-members.

The great thing about Jack Attack is the publicity the program has already received throughout the recent Fox Sports broadcast of the three Australian Premier League instalments, and that publicity is only going to grow now bowls is back on free-to-air television. The weekly episodes of The Bowls Show on SBS are not only be a great way to showcase the wonderful talent we have in Australia but also a chance to preach to the non-converted about how great bowls is and how programs like Jack Attack are in place as a great introduction to the sport. Do you think your club could be doing more to attract new members? Make sure you contact your local Regional Bowls Manager who can steer your club in the right direction. More information about Jack Attack can be found on the website, www.jackattack.com.au

What can Bowls Australia’s

Regional Bowls Managers do for your club?

T

he Regional Bowls Manager Program has 16 RBMs employed in both metropolitan and regional areas of the country, tasked with helping clubs increase participation and membership numbers to ensure the continued prosperity of the sport at the grass-roots level. Regional Bowls Managers priorities include helping clubs develop strategic plans to identify ways to improve their service offering and attract new players.

A big success of the Regional Bowls Managers has been the new participation program Jack Attack, which Bowls Australia designed to encourage new participants to play the sport and also help convert casual barefoot bowlers into full playing members. Jack Attack was based off the revolutionary Australian Premier League, and the fast paced format has attracted new bowlers through the six to eight week competitions held outside of work hours, allowing them a taste of the sport

in a socially competitive environment before deciding if they want to pursue the traditional formats, such as pennant season. Regional Bowls Managers have also distributed Jr. Jack Attack kits to bowling clubs and schools all over the country. These kits have been a hit for clubs and schools to demonstrate the sport of bowls to primary school aged children on just about any flat surface imaginable. Clubs love the Jr. Jack Attack kits because they are light-weight rubber bowls which are safe and importantly protect the bowling green surface - schools love Jr. Jack Attack because bowls can be taught on school grounds, negating the logistics and expense of transporting the children to and from the club. Grant applications can be a daunting process; however our RBMs have helped clubs secure grants from local, state and federal government and are advised on a regular basis of upcoming grants available for sporting clubs. If your club’s infrastructure is in need of a little TLC or some updated equipment, this is just another way your RBM can assist. RBMs will contact your bowling club and arrange a meeting with the Manager, Chairman and the men’s and women’s committee’s either collectively or individually to learn more about your club

and offer their assistance where needed. RBMs are trained to provide the following services and advise to clubs• Club Health Checks • Funding and grant applications • Helping increase participation and membership retention • Increasing the quantity and quality of coaches and officials • Approaching schools for junior recruitment • Strategic planning • Website development • Health and wellbeing seminars • Purchasing bowls equipment • Advertising and promotion • Accurate collection of membership and participation data In Queensland three RBMs will service areas from the NSW/QLD border right up to Townsville under guidance from Bowls Australia and Bowls Queensland who are working collectively to grow the sport of bowls in the Sunshine State. If you want to arrange a meeting with your nearest Regional Bowls Manager check out www.bowlsaustralia.com.au where you will find the Regional Bowls Managers under the Club Assist tab or contact Bowls Australia directly on 03 9480 7100.

2016 Australian open

a world class

transformation

B

roadbeach Bowls Club have undergone a $3.5 million dollar upgrade to transform the bowling club into a world-class sporting venue ahead of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, and we are fortunate enough to relish the new facilities during this year’s $250,000 Australian Open. Over 2000 competitors and spectators will make their way through the new facility during the 14 days festival of bowls, making the most of the new bar, café and kitchen and catching some of the action from the new balconies over-looking the pristine bowling greens. Broadbeach Bowls Club is a now a fresh, vibrant and spacious venue, the bowling greens will run as beautiful as ever and importantly all four bowling greens have lights. The Broadbeach Bowls Club is part of a legacy project that will continue to ensure lawn bowls remains a key sport on the Gold Coast beyond the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Broadbeach Bowls Club will continue to attract major national and international events well into the future with another pinnacle international event, the 2020 World Bowls Championships, to headline the jam-packed Gold Coast bowling calendar. The renovations were conducted in stages; the first stage included the upgraded lighting for the bowling greens, improved club accessibility at the clubs new modern entrance, new office spaces which includes a high performance room for the Australian Jackaroos and NTC Training Squads to utilize in the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 2020 World Championships and a new commercial kitchen and trendy bar. Stage two commenced in April which saw the finishing touches applied to the clubhouse and dining room just in time for everyone to enjoy during this Australian Open.

A specific bowl for the varying conditions of greens is essential. Optima and Dynamic satisfy all needs. If you prefer to own one set then choose the Aero Optima (Aron Sherriff and Karen Murphy have). Suitable for greens 12 seconds to 20.

Ensure you use a matched set and that set needs to be the same as any other set of that model… you are then guaranteed to play more accurately and consistently. Only one brand can offer you that guarantee.

The grip is the most important single factor in the accurate delivery of a bowl. The Z Scoop Grip® has changed the way a bowl is held. Holding an Aero bowl with this advanced grip is as comfortable as holding a tennis ball. It’s the only brand that has such a grip.

Size of a bowl is crucial for accuracy in correct grassing….half sizes allow bowlers to select the perfect size. Only one brand offers you that choice.
