Children’s Centre transitions leadership BERTINE STELZER Bowen Children’s Centre The Board of Directors of Bowen Children’s Centre Society (BCC) is pleased to announce a leadership transition that will mark both the celebration of an extraordinary legacy and the beginning of a new chapter for the organization.

Effective September 1, Ann Silberman will step down from her role as Executive Director and transition into a new oneyear position as Director of Partnerships and Development.

This role will conclude on August 30, 2027, at which time Ann will begin her well-earned retirement from BCC. The Board has appointed Sarah Winny as Interim Executive Director, effective September 1. Sarah will lead the organization while the Board undertakes an open and competitive search for BCC’s next permanent Executive Director later this fall.

Ann’s contributions to Bowen Children’s Centre and to early childhood education on Bowen Island are difficult to overstate. Over a remarkable career spanning more than 40 years, she has played a pivotal role in shaping childcare services in the community. Her leadership helped establish the Bowen Children’s Centre on Carter Road, guided the

organization’s growth through multiple decades and program expansions, steered BCC through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and helped secure participation in the province’s $10-a-day ChildCareBC program.

Today, Bowen Children’s Centre serves close to 100 families and more than 160 children through five programs supporting Bowen Island’s youngest residents and their families. The positive impact Ann has had on generations of children, families, educators, and community members continues to be felt throughout the island.

“Ann’s vision, dedication, and leadership have helped build BCC into the extraordinary organization it is today,” says Bertine Stelzer, Chair of the BCC Board of Directors.

“We are deeply grateful for her decades of service and are delighted that she will continue to contribute to BCC over the coming year through this important new role.”

The Board is equally pleased to welcome Sarah Winny as Interim Executive Director. Sarah has served as BCC’s Managing Director for the past four years and has been part of the organization for more than 13 years as an Early Childhood Educator and leader. Throughout her tenure, she has played a key role in supporting daily operations, staff leadership, and program delivery while working closely alongside Ann to advance BCC’s mission.

A toast to Bowfest 50 and all involved BILL GRANGER Letter Writer / Bowfest Enjoyer Fifty years is a long time for an event to remain relevant and successful in any community.

Bowfest 2026 was blessed with picture-perfect weather (as you will see elsewhere in this edition of The Undercurrent), hundreds of hard working volunteers and a day and evening full of joy. A huge thanks as well to the many amazing sponsors who contributed to the festival.

The Bowfest Committee, led again by Jay and Sindi, delivered a great parade, community tables, country fair and field events with inflatables for the kids and stage program performances that celebrate Bowen’s history, agricultural roots and our diverse Bowen population.

Hoping the winning slugs are back in their natural habitats and the prize vegetables find a good pot, thank you to everyone involved.

Recapping the 16th Rotary Run HILARY BUTLER Bowen Island Rotary Club The 16th Bowen Island Rotary Run - what a brilliant day that was!

The sun shone down on us but not too well. Many thanks to all of you who ran or walked with us on Saturday; it was a great crowd.

We are grateful to all our donors and sponsors who so generously supported us: Presman Wealth Management, Bellwater Water Systems, Frits de Vries Architects, Tomo Spaces, Dr. Gloria Chao, Bowen Island Properties, the De Vries, Ockeloen and Adams families; Snug Cove General Store, Artisan Eats, the Snug Café, Ruddy on Bowen and Savary Island Pie Company.

And we can’t forget the prize donors: Lululemon, Artebella, Forerunners, Bowen Island Pub, Tippy’s, Phoenix Books, USSC, Catherine and Kathryn at The Burrow, and Cates Pharmacy.

Everything we earn on our run goes straight to the young women in Rwanda whom we support with high school and university scholarships, so it is our supporters who are essential in our ongoing mission. We had at least 35 volunteers, both Rotarians and many others, either helping with registration, handing out refreshments, out on the course keeping everyone on the right trail, or supplying water to the thirsty.

Results for all the events (except for the kids’ run which we don’t time) are on up our website komeracanada.ca If your time seems a bit slower than last year, don’t worry!

This year we remeasured the course to make an exact 5K, hence the difference! We have placed the walkers on the 5K run sheet, and those who chose the N category are grouped

together with male and female.

Bowen’s biodiversity comes into focus BOWEN ISLAND CONSERVANCY The winners of the Bowen Island Conservancy’s 2026 Biodiversity Photo Contest offer a wonderful glimpse of the wildlife being noticed around the island, from ravens and owls to insects in our gardens.

In the adult category, Mo Anderson won first place for Curious Raven and third place for Blue Dasher in Repose. Lea Wiljer received second place for Hotel.

Emilie Graham took first place in the teen category with Canada Goose in Snug Cove, followed by Elliot Green in second place with Pacific Banana Slug. No thirdplace prize was awarded in this category.

Among the younger

photographers, Domino Jardine Patterson placed first in the kids’ category for Owl Takes Flight.

Ella Loyer received second place for Barred Owls of the Forest, and Parker Quigley took third with Ants Day Off. The backyard biodiversity category celebrated the wild lives unfolding close to home. Catherine Robertson won first place for Rufous Hummingbird Feeding on Her Fuchsia Bush Flower.

Algray Manlapaz placed second with Pieris marginalis Mating, and Eden Currah received third place for A Bee on Lavender.

Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you to everyone who shared what caught their eye. These photographs remind us just how much there is to notice on Bowen.

Self-serving greed, contempt for human life, mendacity, foolish arrogance, a narcissist’s optimism. A belief that complicated problems can be solved with one simple move and that the outcome can be controlled. People set out on a brash, devious enterprise and accomplish the opposite of what they set out to do, leaving death and chaos in their wake.

These are the all-too-familiar motivating factors in Billy Wilder’s Double Indemnity presented by the Bowen Island Film Society at the Bowen Community Centre Theatre this Friday, Sept. 4.

Throw in a healthy dose of sex – a flimsy anklet bouncing on a well-turned leg, a strip of sunlight, the smell of honey-

suckle and the picture is complete. Double Indemnityis the granddaddy of Film Noir, setting the style for all that followed. Jean Renoir said, “Everyone has their reasons” and the anti-heroes of the film have plenty and see their crime as their last chance for happiness.

But the die is cast and the joy of the film is watching the relentless march of justice play out. We can only hope that modern efforts along the same lines have a similar ending. In the meantime the Forever War of greed, selfishness and blindness to the facts endures.

Double Indemnity is a screening in The Vault series which presents films of the past that speak to the issues and concerns of today.

Screening is at 6:30 pm.

Nook Gala raising funds for a new home CATHERINE NIELSEN Knick Knack Nook Get ready for a fabulous evening of fun and community spirit as the Knick Knack Nook “Gala” Event takes place on Friday, Sept. 18 from 6 to 9 pm at the Bowen Island Community Centre.

This special fundraising evening is being held once again to help raise much-needed funds towards a new building for the Knick Knack Nook - a project that will help secure the future of this much-loved community treasure.

Guests will enjoy an amazing silent auction, featuring more than 70 donated items and experiences. There will be plenty of opportunities to browse, bid and perhaps discover the perfect treasure while supporting a great cause.

Adding to the excitement, we will enjoy a fashion show showcasing wonderful and unique items found at the Nook.

Local models will take to the runway wearing everything from vintage treasures and one-of-a-kind finds to stylish and unexpected pieces - all demonstrating the creativity and affordability that makes the Nook such a special part of Island life.

The evening will also include a BBQ dinner from Miller’s Meatcraft, drinks, music, door prizes, a 50/50 draw plus plenty of opportunities to socialize with friends and neighbours.

But more than anything, the evening is about community. For years, the Nook has been a place where gently used treasures find new homes, where people can shop affordably, and where donations and volunteer efforts help make a difference. Since the Knick Knack Nook Re-Use It Stores opened its doors in 2009 it has given more than $1 million to

our Bowen Island community. The new building represents an important next chapter - and the success of this fundraiser will make that vision possible.

So save the date! The Knick Knack Nook “Gala” Event takes place on Friday, Sept. 18 from 6 to 9 pm at the Bowen Island Community Centre. The ticket price is free!

It promises to be a night of great finds, great fashion, and great community spirit - all for a very worthwhile cause.

Community Choir tunes up for new season LORRAINE ASHDOWN Bowen Island Community Choir Joni Mitchel sings, “I am as constant as a northern star”. I think the same could be said about the Bowen Island Community Choir. For over 30 years, the BICC has been gathering, singing, performing, making friends, laughing, crying and more. It is not much different than any other family.

You are invited to join us! If you have not sung in the Community Choir before, it is a soprano, alto, tenor, bass (SATB) choir directed by the fabulous Ellen MacIntosh and accompanied by the equally gifted Sheilagh Sparks.

So, what do you need in order to join this choir, you ask?

A love of singing. If you read music - that’s great. If not, you will be just fine. There are no auditions.

Working towards a concert on Dec. 12, we will gather to practice at Cates Hill Chapel on Wednesday nights. Our first night for registration happens at 7:15 pm at the chapel.

Personally, I have sang in this choir for more than 20 years as have many of my friends and neighbours. The amount of combined talent between Ellen and Sheilagh is enormous and every year I learn something new.

We are going through some interesting times these days as human beings and there is no doubt that singing is one of

the best gifts we can give ourselves in these uncertain times.

Please consider joining us. We are a group of over 45 voices and we make a joyful noise. If you are new to Bowen - this is a wonderful way to get connected to the Community. If you have been part of the choir in the past, we welcome you back.
