MeaningfulImprovements That Will Last for Years
Oneof ourbiggestmilestonesthis year wasthe generous donationfrom Bowen Fire & Rescue, whichallowedus to purchase a newfridge andfreezer. Thisupgrade significantly improves our ability to safely store perishablesand maintaina reliable supplyoffreshfood, especially during winter weatherorferry disruptions.
We also want to recognizethetremendous effortsof Rick Burrowsand Ian Thompson, along with several guest helpers. With supportfromthe Bowen Island Community Foundation, theycompleted a seriesof safety, accessibility, and storageupgrades at Collins Hall, the behind-the-scenes home base that makesthefood bank possible. Their work hasimproved boththeexperiencefor visitorsandtheefficiencyof ouroperations. Thanksfellas!
The VolunteersWho Keep Us Running

Mike McKoryk, Murray Skeels, Renee Turner, Zac Blighand Caroline Rowles rotatedcity runsall year to pickupthe bulkof our supplies, allcoordinated seamlessly by Kim Ridgewell. We also extendheartfeltthanks to the Ruddy staff for deliveringbread, to Sue Ritchieforbringingpremademeals from Better Meals, to Jaye Routledgeforthe recyclinghelp, and to Sue Clarke forthe significant supportshecontinues to provide behindthe scenes. Additionally, Candace Hannah keeps ourshelvesand storage space sparklingly clean, Terry Boss keeps our books, andtheentire board ofthe United Church makes sure we are well-funded and well-supported.
Andofcourse, countless Islandersandlocalorganizations donated funds, groceries, andtime. We see your generosity every week!

PHOTOBYLEA WILJER
If you’re in thewoods andyou heara slow, deep, rollinghammering that lasts about threeseconds, thenyou alreadyknow thestarofthismonth’s photo. In“Pileated,” LeaWiljer hascaughtone of Bowen’smost captivatingforestmoments:a pileated woodpecker workingits wayalong afallen tree in amatureforest, chisellingfor food. It’s abrief, close look at abird that is often heard before itis seen.
Most BowenIslanders know thepileated woodpecker, evenifthey’ve neverhad such aclose encounter. Nearly thesizeofa crow, blackwithboldwhite stripesdownthe neck anda flaming-redcrest,it’sone of Bowen’s biggestand most striking forest birds. As youwalkalong Bowen’strails, orsitin your back yard, listenfor itshigh, repeated “ackack-ack-ack-ack” echoingthrough thetrees. Formanyofus, that soundisthe voice of wild nature.
On BowenIsland, pileated woodpeckers live in maple/alder, evergreen, andmixedwood forests. Whatever theforest type they choose, theyrelyonbig oldertreesandtall, decaying stumps knownassnags fornest androost sites, andonrotting wood rich in theirfavourite foods— carpenterants and wood-boringbeetles.
Becauseeachpairneedsfrom120 to over 1,000 hectares of mature forest, there is
room foronlya smallnumberofpileated woodpeckersonBowen Island.Yet they punchfar abovetheir weight in maintainingthe island’s biodiversity.Ecologistscall them “ecosystemengineers” becausetheir dailyactivitiesreshape theforestinways that allowmanyother speciestothrive. Their“engineering” starts withthehomes they carveout of bigold trees. Each spring, malesexcavatenew nest cavities in large oldertrees, eitherlivingordead. Amale selectsa suitable tree, carvesa circular, softball-sized entrance hole, and chiselsout adeep, spaciousnest cavity bigenoughto hold up to four full-sizedwoodpeckers.
As he works, thefemaledrops by,apparentlyinspectinghis progress.Insomeyears he maystart threeorfourholes before the pair settlesonone to useastheir nursery. Theone to four youngraisedthere areona steady diet of insectsbrought bybothparents andreach adultsizeinabout amonth. Thenthe wholefamilyleaves— andnever comes back to that nest.
Afternesting, pileatedwoodpeckersroost aloneatnight or during harshweather in hollow trees. Roostinginthisway helps them avoidpredators such as owls andconservebodyheat. Roostchambersare usually much larger than nest cavities.Tocreate them,a pileated woodpecker findsa big tree with ahollowcentreand opensseveral entrances, providingescaperoutesifit is attacked.
Once thewoodpeckersmoveout, other animalsquickly move in.Acrossthe Pacific
Northwest, more than20 speciesof“secondary cavity users” nest or roostinold pileated woodpecker cavities.OnBowen, theseinclude bufflehead, wood duck, commongoldeneye,hoodedmerganser,commonmerganser,Americankestrel,northernsaw-whetowl,and browncreeper. The same hollowtrees mayalsoshelter mammals such as silver-hairedbat,big brown bat,Douglas’squirrel, andnorthernflyingsquirrel. Withoutpileated woodpeckers, many of thesespecies couldnot liveon BowenIsland.
Pileated woodpeckersalsoplaya keyrole in nutrient recycling. Theirmainfoods— carpenterantsand thelarvaeofwood-boringbeetles —liveindeadtrees or in trees nearingthe endoftheir lives. Larger and more powerful than otherlocal woodpeckers, pileatedscan tear apartstanding snags andfallenlimbs, leaving pilesofwoodchips behind.Indoing so,theyspeed up decay andthe return of nutrientstothe soil, helpingtokeepforesttrees strong andhealthy.

Thereisa simple wayyou canhelpthe woodpeckersonyourown property:protect largelivingand dead treeswheneverit is safe to do so.Manyproblem treescan be cutdown, leavingthe lowerthree metres of trunkstanding. These remainingtrunkscan become future nest or roostsites forpileated woodpeckersand, over time, apartment complexesfor awidevariety of secondary cavity nesters.
So,the next timethatred crestflashes past or youhearthatsharp ‘ack-ack-ack’inthe trees, remember:thisbirdishardatwork buildinghomes andrecyclingnutrientsfor much of Bowen’sforestdwellers.
