Swimmersand SwimBowenfans! We are stoked to host you allon Saturday July 11,10am at Tunstall Bay Beach. We have some eventdetails to share with you, but first a SwimBowen story.
Last yearalocal swimmerarriving at SwimBowen by herselffromthe Lower Mainland happened to meetfour swimmersfrom Washington Statein the parkinglot. They got tochattingonthe walk fromthe parkinglot to the Swimmer Check-In station at Tunstall Bay Beach, andinshortorder a friendshipblossomed.
Cheering each otheron during the swim,enjoying the eventafterglow together,theyendedupexchanging contactinformationand vowed to train together overthe next yearforthis year’s event.
A year laterthat isexactly whathappened. The Washington State swimmershopped overthe border and swam withtheirnewfound Canadian friendinher favourite White Rock pool.
Whena team registered this year withthe clever, tonguein cheektitle “SwimmingforCitizenship”(see the whole teamonthenext page) we reached outandthis wastheir story. How perfect. We had to share it.I think they will winaprize.

On Monday, June15,thefour ofus went forahike to Bowen Island. We were lookingfor Cape Roger Curtis Trail,not realizing that once we were dropped off by the bus at Tunstall Beach, there wasquitealong way to go to reach ourhikingdestination.
At Tunstall we asked a local familyfordirections; Michael immediately offered to driveus to thetrailhead at the Cape Hike over, we started walkingupthe road, by now realizing we were far away from Snug Cove andlocal
bus stops.Another kind soul saw usandoffered a lift to thenearest bus stop. This gentleman,- retired firemanfrom Vancouver- came back to pickusup withhistruck anddropped usoff at the280. While waitingthere, another gentleman, Owen,askedif we wanted a lift to thevillage, which wequicklyaccepted.
We aredelighted withthe kindnessandhospitalityof your Island community,and want to express our warmestthanks to the strangers we metthat dayandwho offered us much-welcomed rides!

Bowen Island’s 9U Cubs took thefield at Sowden Park in North Vancouveron June20 witha chance to win gold. They facedthe Northshore Tigers,a skilled squad withhot bats and stalwartdefence. The Cubsand Tigers splittheir season series1-1,thefirst ablowout7-0 winforthe Tigers,the seconda close6-4 winfor Bowen.
Atight3-2 semifinal againsttheNSBA Blue Jaystookalot outofthe Cubs’pitching staff.NSBA ruleslimit hurlers from throwingmorethan35pitchesin two games. Before the first pitch wasthrown,the Tigers coaching staffdemanded(asis their right)thepitch counts. With Keith Campbell at 26, Ren Tarik Patel at 16,andAlbie Vermette at 25the Cubs regulars looked poised to at least start(in9U,pitchersthrow one inning per game,thefinalinningsaredone withpitching machines).
Butthe Tigers’coachescited a subtle rule:no pitcher may pitch ina second gameonthe same dayiftheythrew morethan25pitchesinthefirst.Immediately, Campbell, the team’s ace, wasknocked offthemound before the game started.
Anotherproblememerged just as quickly:there was noplateumpire. Dutiful team manager Megan Harrison wasonthe case andfinallytrackedhimdown so the game could start.
Themishapsdidnotendthere forthe Cubs.Asthecoaching staff scrambled to adjust, they took Dylan Davies offfirst base to warm upinthe bullpen…andforgot to replacehim. Asthe Tigers leadoff ripped aground ball to third base,the Cubs’fielderlooked uponly to have noone to throw to.
Afteracoupleofdubious calls,and some strong Tigerhits, the Cubs were down 4-1inthe second. Slumped shoulders anddejectedfaces toldthe story:this game was just not going to go their way.
But Coach Paul McGillivray hadotherideas. Ashe had so oftenthroughoutthe season,he calledatimeoutand gathered the team to dispense some sage baseball wisdom.
“It seemslike you guys decidedthat this game was over before we startedplaying. You looklike you’ve givenup. We’ve been working towardsthismoment all year. We played themost baseballthat we possibly could,that’s a winasfarasIamconcerned.Icouldn’t care less if we win orlosethis game. Youknow what Ido care about? That we giveit ourall. That we play our very best That’s all I askof each of you. So let’s get back outthereandshowthem what we’re madeof!”
Pickedupfromthedepths,the Cubs wiped off the dust and went to work Eventhoughthey were missing slugger MichaelGriederandgritty journeyman Connor Mercer, the Cubs battled.Aggressive baserunning from Hamish McGuire, steadfast catchingfrom Joey McGillivray, poised defensefrom Sawyer Slater, smooth swingingfrom Wyn Pedrosa(whose walkoffdouble securedthe Cubs’ last bats in theplayoffs),fantasticpitchingfrom Patel, smart slugging from Waylon Bregg, keydefencefrom Davies, and studious (sometimesneverending)questionsfrom regular season MVP-holder Stanley Hurlburt allconspired to keepthe Cubs inthe game.
Of specialnote is Sebastian Yu,who gave the Cubs the gutsiest performancethis writer has ever seenona baseballdiamond.
Butdespiteallofthis,the Tigers still seemed overwhelming.Theirairtightdefenseand popping bats were relentless. Butthe Cubs hadonemore card to play.
Trainedonthebleachersof Snug Cove Diamond, Bowen’s fansare rowdyand relentlessandthey made their presenceknown at Sowden Park. They yelled support,made noise,played walkout music, andoffered positive encouragement to thedugout. They refused to let the Cubsforgetwhothey were andwhat hadpropelledthem to the Championship game.
Cubsplayer Nikki Bogacz wasdestined to makehis markintheChampionship game.
Itall came to thefinalinning, withthe Cubs trailing6-4. The Tigers loadedthe bases but, somehow,the Cubs held themoffthe scoresheet by securing theecrucial outs.
Julian Poverhitan0-2leadoff single to getthe Cubs going.Then Keith Campbell, still stewingfromthe technicalitythat kepthimoffthemound, blastedadouble scoring Julian.Albie Vermette,a clutch playerforthe teamall year,fired his owndouble to leftcentreand then managed to steal third. The winning run was60 feetfromhome.
After two strike outs,itall camedown to Nikki Bogacz Nikki startedthe seasononalow,leavingthefirst practice dejected. Butthe Cubs refused to leavehim behindandhe worked hard onhis own to improve Ultimately,hislove of the game overcamehisfear.
Coach LucBregg, whodidafantastic job asthe Cubs’ hittingcoachall year,deftly worked thepitching machine— but Nikkimissedthefirst two pitchesand wasin a0-2hole.
And Nikki ripped aground balldown thethird base line and sprinted forfirst! The ball was toohot forthethird basemen to field cleanly so Albie tookoffforhome at a full sprint Thethrow came just asAlbie slidhome. “SAFE!”
Thebleacherserupted in cheers,the Cubs piled out ofthedugout. Nikki walked itoffforthe Cubs,now the 9U ChampionsoftheNSBA. Thecoaches got water bottles poured ontheirheadsandthe goldmedals were presentedonthefield. On theferry hometheydidan announcement overthe P.A. andthe Cubsenjoyed a spirited renditionsof“Wearethe Champions” onthe sundeck.
Asthe sun setonaglorious dayof baseballthere were nothing butsmilesfrom ear to earon everyone. Oneof the coachesnoted: “You couldn’twritethis.”

A Western Tiger Swallowtailis hard to miss.
Large andluminous,itglidesthroughthe early summer airon yellow wingscrossed with boldblack stripes. It may pass overa garden, pause at aflowering shrub, then rise amongthetrees with scarcelya beat of its wings.

Bowen Islandersusually begin to see Western Tiger Swallowtailsin late Mayand early June. Through winter, they have remainedhidden onthegroundasmottled brown-grey chrysalises beneathfallenleaves.After several warm days,theadultsemerge, unfoldtheir wingsandtake to theairin search ofnectar.
Among Bowen’s largest butterflies, both malesand females have a wingspan aboutas wide asthe palmof your hand.Astheymove amongflowers,they carry pollen from plant to plant. Thoseplantsproduce seedsand fruitsthat feed otherinsectsandanimals. The swallowtailsthemselves,as caterpillarsandadults,areonthemenuforbirds, spidersandotherinsect-eaters Their brieflives are part of theisland’s food web.
Afterfeeding, theadults turn to courtship.A male swoops andflutters infrontofafemaleand, ifsheshowsinterest, he releasesa chemicalpheromonethatmakeshim more attractive.
Oncethey have mated,thefemale beginsa careful search.
Carryingas many as100fertilized eggs,shelooks fora bigleaf maple, willowor wild cherry On theunderside of a suitableleaf,she lays onetinygreen egg, thenflieson to anothertree orbranchand begins again. She may repeat this journeydozensoftimes, scattering heroffspring so that each caterpillar hasplenty of food nearby andis harderfor predators to find.
The caterpillarthathatcheslooks nothing like the butterflyit may become.
When young,it resemblesabird dropping —an unappe-
tizingdisguisefroma hungry bird.Asitgrows, it turnsgreen anddevelops two large yellow-and-blackcirclesonitsthorax,asshown in Luc Cummins’photograph.
When startled,itdrawsinitshead,enlargingitsthorax makingthecircles suddenlylooklikeenormous eyes. It canalsoextendabright orange,forked organ resembling a tongue. In aninstant, an appetizinggreen caterpillar appears to becomeatiny dangerous snake.
The performance may startleabirdorother predator just longenoughforthe caterpillar to escape.
Western Tiger Swallowtails pass through as many asthree generationson Bowenina year. Adultsliveforonly about12 days scarcely two weeksinwhich to feed,find a mateand beginthenext generation.
The caterpillars spend roughly two weeks eatingleaves andgrowing beforeforming chrysalises. In summer, a butterfly mayemerge fromitin about20 days. Chrysalises formedinfall takea slower path, remainingdormant for as longas sevenmonths beforetheadultsemerge in spring.
Forallitsdisguisesandtransformations,the swallowtail mayneed partsoftheplaces where we live.
Caterpillarsneed theleavesofbigleaf maple, willowand wild cherry Adultsneed nectar-richflowers Chrysalises need quiet,protectedplacesamongfallenleaves.A butterfly seen abovea summer garden maydependon several small undisturbedcornersof Bowen.
Pesticidesareaprincipalthreat. Neonicotinoids and otherinsecticides can kill both caterpillarsandadultsand mayarrive on beddingplantstreated at a gardencentre. Removinghosttreesand nativeflowering plants takes away food,while clearing every fallenleafandtidying every garden edge can remove wintershelter.
Afewpractical choices can make room for swallowtails. Keepor plant suitable nativehosttrees. Grow nectar-rich nativeplantsand gardenflowers that bloom at different timesofthe year. Avoid pesticides,andleave somesheltered patchesoffallenleavesundisturbed. During dry weather,a shallow dishof waterora patch of damp soil can canprovide much needed moisture fordrinking.
Then watch for the nextflashof yellowandblack above theflowers That Western Tiger Swallowtail may have spent winter beneathnearby leaves. It has survived asa caterpillar by pretending to be abirddropping—ora snake—and remadeitselfinto a butterfly insidea chrysalis.
Forafewbrief summer days,thehiddenlife beneaththe leaves risesin beauty into Bowen’s sky.

Thetraffic jam-which looksas though itwill resultin several collisions each year-iscarefully choreographed by skilledsailors,andasusual everyone took offwithoutmajorincident fortheirlongjourneyaround the islandbefore returning to USSC Marina tocelebratetheday.
