Cougar capture attempts halted ALEX KURIAL Editor

Efforts to capture Bowen Island’s resident cougar have been called off by the BC Conservation Officer Service. The provincial organization (BCCOS) - responsible for wildlife management in B.C. - was called to Bowen after the cougar was determined to have killed livestock at a local farm. The incident prompted BCCOS to attempt capture of the animal, but this proved unsuccessful. In a July 8 statement, BCCOS said they were halting efforts due to the cougar’s elusiveness and the difficulty of capturing such an animal in general, but that they would resume efforts if more livestock are killed. The statement also noted the presence of at least two black bears on Bowen, but says there is no current danger to the public. BCCOS added there are no plans to relocate either the cougar or the bears away from the island. Bowen Municipality (BIM) stressed the importance of what residents can do to reduce unwanted wildlife interactions. This includes making sure livestock and other animals are protected with proper fencing and security, and having a secure garbage and compost setup. BCCOS encourages people to report all wildlife incidents to the Report all Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) phone line at 1-877-952-7277.

This amendment will create a zone variation of the Settlement Residential (SR2) zone which applies to 1658 Mount Gardner Road and allows a smaller minimum lot size. The amendment was requested by the owner of 1658 and 1639 Mount Gardner Road in order to allow them to legally separate the two areas of the property, which are currently under one title even though they are separated by Mount Gardner Road.

This amendment will affect 620 Laura Road placing the property in a zone variation to permit cidery as a principal use of the property. The bylaw will restrict the maximum size of retail space and picnic area of the cidery.

Write on Bowen Festival prepares for Sixth Edition Making life sweeter JACQUELINE MASSEY Write on Bowen Writers, readers, and anyone looking to spark their creativity are invited to take advantage of Early Bird registration, now open through July 31, for the 2026 Write on Bowen Festival of Readers & Writers, taking place September 18 to 20 on Bowen Island. Now in its sixth year, the boutique literary festival brings together acclaimed Canadian authors, editors, poets, and publishing professionals for a weekend of workshops, readings, conversation, and community. Designed for writers of all experience levels — from curious beginners to seasoned authors — the festival offers an intimate opportunity to learn directly from accomplished literary professionals while connecting with fellow readers and writers. This year’s workshop lineup reflects a remarkable range of genres and creative interests. Participants can explore screenwriting with author and screenwriter Andrew Buckley; discover poetry in nature with Bowen Island poet Aaron Rabinowitz; strengthen emotional storytelling with bestselling novelist and editor Jenn Sommersby; or sharpen dialogue and editing skills with the acclaimed editing team Darling Axe (Michelle Barker and David Griffin Brown). Stage 3 Water Use Restrictions Remain in Place for Municipal Water Systems

MICHAEL NANKIN Bowen Island Film Society There are works of art that live in our bones. We are each of us a tapestry of a Dali clock, a McCartney melody, a Sergeant portrait, a downcast glance by Streep, a shaft of Spielberg light. Threads woven of sculptures, meals, gestures, words, plots, brushstrokes – things that rhymed inside us and added colour, stich by stich, to the fabric and structure of our ever-lovin’ selves. We are made of these works and, if we’ve been lucky, they are things of value and depth. Akira Kurosawa, Japan’s supreme film artist, best known for his Samurai films such as Seven Samurai (which begat The Magnificent Seven and all its progeny) and The Hidden Fortress (which begat Star Wars and all its progeny) also made Ikiru (“To Live”) in 1952. It is a film about the struggle to find meaning in a life and, once seen, will sing in your heart forever. Seen today, in a world of people hiding from life behind screens, Ikiru’s minor bureaucrat main character, pushing endless towers of paper and rubber stamping meaningless documents, might as well be hunched over an iPhone for all the value he’s getting out of life. It is only when a diagnosis gives him six months to live does he realize he has never lived at all. Life, for all of us, is terminal and has to be grabbed and shaken. Kurosawa ignites a fire in us and the embers burn eternally. The Bowen Island Film Society is introducing world cinema into its lineup with this film, with many more to come. Ikiru screens on Thursday, July 23 at 6:30 pm as part of The Vault series at the Bowen Theatre. The film will be presented in the original Japanese with English subtitles. BIFS presents these films in partnership with the Bowen Municipality and Bowen Recreation. Tickets available through Bowen Recreation or at the door.

Scaling a 70-foot pole, speed carving furniture, and revving the hot saw (you may want to cover your ears for that one) are just some of the fun on tap. See you at Veterans Park on Saturday! Another eventful Rotary year in the books HILARY BUTLER Bowen Island Rotary Club The Rotary year has wound down, not with a whimper but a bang (apologies to T.S. Eliot!) A poolside potluck at the lovely home of Paul and Myriam on June 15 and a lively Annual General Meeting at Artisan Eats at the end of May preceded the full house of June 27 for Hyunjoo Lee’s presentation on Blue Zones. It is hard to encapsulate Hyunjoo’s enthusiastic and detailed analysis of the Blue Zones phenomenon (catch it on Netflix if you have never heard of this), but suffice it to say that she is about to launch a similar project on Bowen Island for which many participants have signed up. Watch this space! Our Bowenrotary.com website has the slides for this presentation. With Hyunjoo’s help, we will all become long-lived and healthy community-minded Bowenites! Over the past 12 months, Bowen Rotary has been hard at work on various ongoing projects such as address signs, AEDs (Automated External Defibrillator), support for the Bowen Food Resilience Society,

Bowen Island Recycling Depot recycling, Stay Bright at Night on Bowen, our Polio Project Saturday event, Beautiful Gate in Lesotho and various other initiatives. New this year is Smart Watch, championed by Sophie Walters, a project for Bowen teenagers that is expanding rapidly. We are always on the lookout for new and interesting projects that will serve both our community and elsewhere. We are also fortunate in being able to enlist the financial help of our Rotary District and Rotary International for these projects. Projects are not our only focus. We have been fortunate to be able to attract interesting and inspiring speakers to our meetings this year, notably Katie Smith Milway, Wade Davis, Charles McNeill, Corporal Brad Savage of Bowen RCMP, Cathy Peters, Brenda Morrison, and several others. Next year’s line-up is looking impressive as the Speakers’ Committee is already inviting various speakers, both local and international. We, at Rotary, are always looking for new members to add to our eclectic group; we love exchanging opinions on various noncontroversial subjects (we are non-political but multi-cultural) at our regular potlucks held at Belterra, where we all proud-

ly present our culinary expertise, whether it be vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian and even carnivorous! And hold on for a last word! Although the Rotary year technically takes a break over the summer, apart from Hyunjoo’s project, some of us are hard at work organizing the Bowen Island Rotary Run, aka Rotary Run for Rwanda, aka Run for the Ferry. This event has taken place every year on Bowfest Day for decades, and this year the date is Saturday, August 29, just before the Bowfest parade. This run/walk is one of Bowen Rotary’s international projects that supports Komera

Canada, a local charity supplying scholarships for deserving young girls in Rwanda to enable them to complete their studies. We are very grateful to local sponsors and donors for their help in raising funds to send to Rwanda every year, not forgetting our loyal volunteers. We are also very appreciative of local runners and walkers who come out year after year, and we strongly urge people of all ages who haven’t done so before to join us for a run or a walk on the beautiful trails of Bowen Island on August 29. Island Theatre Technician honoured PAUL HOOSON Contributor Recently, a small plaque was placed inside the Tech Booth of our new Theatre to honour Ian Davidson for his many years of dedication and support of the Performing Arts on Bowen, so that future generations of lighting and sound technicians using this facility will know the incredible contribution he has made to our community. Ian began lighting performances in the earliest years of Theatre On The Isle (TOTI, 1978), and has continued to donate his skills and talent to virtually every production from coffee houses to Shakespeare, ever since. Until recently, this entailed constructing venues from scratch, loading and striking heavy lighting instruments, cable, stands and a rudimentary lighting board for each production, often late at night, on weekends, and in challenging weather. He designed lighting plots and ran the lighting board for hundreds of shows, contributing thousands of hours over almost 50 years to bring our local talent to the stage with a fine hand and professional level production value. This is an amazing feat, given that this was done in his “spare” time, as he juggled a life as a master carpenter, husband to Maggie, father, grandfather, Tai Chi expert, and all-around fabulous person. As a community that survives and thrives on volunteerism, we salute you Ian, smiling Buddha of the lighting board. This plaque is a small thank you for your huge gift to the Artistic heart of Bowen.

Widely regarded as one of world theatre’s greatest plays by one of its greatest playwrights, Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days is coming to Bowen Island. A timeless treatise on the absurdity of human life, the play is being produced by Kingbaby Theatre and opens July 31 at the Bowen Theatre. Jackie Minns of Kingbaby works at a recent rehearsal with her director, and son, Andrew Cameron. Minns is taking on the iconic role of Winnie. More than $45,000 raised for Cancer Care Fund; another stunner year MARY LETSON SwimBowen Lighter winds and calmer seas were a welcome sight to swimmers completing the 750 and 1,500 metre course for last Saturday’s 9th Annual SwimBowen event. Buoyed with an army of volunteers, the swim was another fundraising extravaganza with swimmers, donors and sponsors coming together to raise $46,745 for the Cancer Care Fund supporting Bowen Island residents in cancer treatment. Part of the magic of this event is how it manages to attract both the best ocean swimmers from far and wide, as well as those fairly new to ocean swimming. Congratulations to top overall 750 metre finishers: 3rd place, 51-year old Max Aristov from Seattle: 15:36; 2nd place, 55-year old D’Arcey Musselman from North Vancouver: 12:42; and 1st place, 16-year old Armen Nercessian, 11:09 from North Vancouver. Congratulations to the top overall 1,500 metre finishers: 3rd place, 14-year old Kira Pyper from North Vancouver: 24:55; 2nd place 54 year old Mark Kennedy from Vancouver: 20:23, and 1st place, 16 year old Lukas Musselman from North Vancouver: 19:48. Congratulations to our legacy swimmer and top fundraiser Anne Chollat! Bedecked in her signature, self-styled aquatic themed swimmer chapeau, Anne once again knocked it out of the park raising an incredible $5,674 for the Cancer Care Fund. Her efforts are rewarded with the Grand Prize valued at $2,000: a three-night Whistler Getaway package generously donated by one of our biggest fans, Sharon and Brian Smallwood of California.
