FUTURE GRADUATES: The class of 2036 gathered Saturday morning for the annual photoshoot of all the Bowen babies born in this school year. In the meantime this week is our annual celebration of all the achievements of the current crop of graduates. While many Boweners grumble about ferry issues, islander Chris Wilson decided to put that frustration to action and do something about overload roulette.

The once-computer programmer-turned-lawyer built an app to monitor ferry and bus status.

He’ll never be surprised by another Horseshoe Bay overload again.

The Bowen Commuter app takes BC Ferries’ Queen of Capilano information to let users know how full the next ferry is, when the last ferry left and links to the current location of the ferry. It does the same for Peter King’s Express Bus and has the schedule for the Cormorant Marine water taxi.

“I was constantly finding myself looking for this information and it’s not available all in one place,” explains Wilson, a Bowen-to-Vancouver commuter for the past 17 years.

So he learned the Apple computer language Swift, paid $300 to become a developer and after some beta testing, launched the app in April. The app is only available for iOS (there’s no android version).

When the Undercurrent spoke with Wilson in early June, the app was just shy of 200 downloads.

“I use it every day” says Wilson. “It tells me how full the ferry is so if I’m driving, I know that I need to leave a little earlier.

“I’m hoping that it benefits other people on Bowen as well.”

He adds, “It was a lot fun to make. And it certainly took a few months, experimenting and learning and writing more and more code.”

“It was sort of to try to save ourselves from having to go off Island all the time,” laughs Morgan. “So there was definitely some self-interest in there.”

After a couple of years of work, Bowen Island Football Club was granted BC Soccer club status in 2009.

From those early days of league soccer, with a handful of players, the club has grown to approximately 120 youth players and between 65 and 95 adult co-ed players. The club plays two seasons a year and Morgan says that the club is offering summer programming for the first time this year.

It hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing.

BIFC was put to the test early on in the artificial turf field controversy of 2009. The community was divided over artificial turf vs. grass, the cost of the project and the need to cut down trees for the field.

But the turf field proceeded and the subsequent generation of soccer players has honed their game on the pitch.

That generation includes several youth who went from BIFC to the Metro league in Vancouver and it boasts at least one Bowen superstar.

Molly Quarry, 17, Morgan’s daughter, who played six seasons with BIFC as a youngster, worked her way up to the Vancouver Whitecaps elite program for the youth national soccer team and has won a University of Nebraska soccer scholarship.

“I think one of the greatest things about the club is when they graduate from BICS and go off to high school, that they’re continuing to play soccer,” says Morgan. He notes that part of the goal of the club was to encourage sport in people’s lives into adulthood.

In the blazing Vancouver sun last weekend, BIFC celebrated their 10 years of existence with a party, Soccerfest. The young ones did drills and soccer games on the grass field while the turf field hosted exhibition games. The last game of the day pitted the founding parents of BIFC (and some other men) against the founding youth, their children, including Morgan (who has a soccer background himself) vs. Molly (the soccer star).

And the children won in the end.

The controversy over the artificial turf at BICS 10 years ago was all but forgotten on Sunday. After a day of drills and exhibition games, Soccerfest ended with a match against the founding fathers and their children.

While he’s had all sorts of suggestions for additions to the app — an alert function for overloads, a ride-sharing feature, showing the locations of Bowen’s on-island buses, and a messaging feature — Wilson says he’s taking a breather for now.

“It’s up and running and working and so far, so good,” he chuckles.

“I managed to handle the schedule change automatically, so that was a big deal for me. I’m an intellectual property lawyer, not a programmer anymore. But this was my little foray back into my youth.”

The app is $1.39 on the Apple store, but Wilson says that’s to recover the cost of registering as a developer.

The best of Bowen — and the Undercurrent I love this edition of the Undercurrent. For me, it’s one of the reasons we have a paper.

Because as much as I can wax on about municipal dramas or local controversies (which are important), community papers must be grounded in the people who read them.

We try to recognize people throughout the year but the grad issue is, for me, our greatest concentration of accomplishments and hope for the future.

I love reading the submissions, some from the graduates themselves, others from proud loved ones, all of them excited.

And this is a particularly special grad issue for the Undercurrent staff. Tracey Wait has a son graduating (look for the Cruisers reference) and I have a close family friend graduating (look for the yellow roses). Celebrating loved ones’ accomplishments publicly is a particular perk of working for a newspaper.

Congratulations everyone.

While Bowen dries up, we resurface roads...

I realize that there is a budget and schedule for road maintenance. However, in light of the water supply problems, albeit in only a couple of neighbourhoods (so far), spending money to resurface the Deep Bay roads (Melmore, Lenora, Senator) instead of addressing water issues, in the short term and the long term, seems to me not the right priority or wise expenditure of public funds.

While the Cove Bay Water System supply from Grafton Lake reservoir currently meets the needs of the users, this is not likely to be the case in future scenarios which include increased

population and consumption, never mind hotter, drier and longer summers. This is an island; situations might arise where we might have to share a resource, such as water supply. Shouldn’t we be proactive and take measures, sooner than later, such as raising the dam on Grafton Lake to increase the storage capacity to the maximum allowable under the existing water licences? Are the builders or property owners of new homes, or renovated homes and/or upgraded landscapes, being required to install water storage cisterns for water collected from the roof? Are there financial incentives, and also for

Summer ferry schedule kicks in on June 20 — kind of...

Smokers shouldn’t walk away from their responsibilities It’s almost summer and it’s dry already. A no-smoking ban is in effect in Crippen Regional Park and signs have been posted. Unfortunately “Pall Mall Blue” and “Belmont” neglected to heed the warnings.

It’s peaceful sitting on the bench in the Memorial Garden, reflecting on life or remembering a loved one. Please respect this beautiful setting.

Water conservation by residents should be ongoing and not just when the need arises.

The Cove Bay Water System presently allows watering of lawns for a maximum of three days a week (without daily time limits)!

Unless one has one’s own water supply through reuse or collection of rain water, watering of lawns should be discouraged, if not prohibited, during the summer months, even if there is no water shortage. Irrigation systems should work depending on the weather, and not automatically run rain or shine. Also, irrigation nozzles watering the lawn should

allow smoking. If you are a smoker it’s downright annoying, but if you must smoke please pick up your darn butts and dispose of them appropriately. Don’t butt them out on the ground as you’re sitting on the bench enjoying the serene surroundings of the garden and then walk away.

Everyone is accustomed to seasonal changes in the BC Ferries schedule. But the switch to the summer schedule this week is bound to cause a bit of confusion.

People should especially take note of the ferries that accommodate high school students. The 7:30 a.m. ferry that leaves Bowen Island will now be at 7:20 so you might not have time for that third (or fourth) cup of coffee. However, knowing that teenagers have a

tougher time than most with early mornings, BC Ferries is keeping the 7:30 departure for weekdays untils the end of school (June 27.)

Likewise, although the summer schedule has the 3:30 ferry from Horseshoe Bay switching to 3:20, for the next week you still get that extra 10 minutes to make it to the terminal.

Just remember, however, that the new schedule has no exceptions on the next two weekends.

The only thing that was stolen was my heart Well Bowen you did it again. You stole my heart. My wallet was turned in with everything in it: $400 cash, Visa card, my kid’s paycheque and driver’s licence.

And Janis Treleaven and Basia Lieske were at the ready to go hunting for it, too. And I have no doubt that if it hadn’t turned up somebody somewhere somehow would’ve helped me sort that out.

Lots of you know that these last few years have been highly transitional and with lots and lots and lots of hard lows and beautiful highs. This year, things are just finding their place. My head is above water and I am inching (and flying) this life of mine forward, so when my wallet goes missing with some of my rent in it, I can go from zero to totally despairing in seconds, and all those old voices of doubt start yelling at me in my head.

So there I was convincing myself that I’d been an idiot and how I am just so careless, how I should know better, what’s wrong with me, and how am I going to get myself out of this one. Lo and behold, within minutes of posting how I’d lost my wallet on Facebook, it turns out it was turned in to the Visitor Centre. Then the amazing Jody Lorenz drives down, hugs me, tells me what a good job I’m doing with my boys, my life, all of it –– and I am willing to drop the dumb voices and believe her. And all is back to normal.

Only it’s not. It’s better than normal.

Normal is thinking someone stole my cash and tossed my wallet into the trash. Normal is wondering if maybe while I was napping in the sun someone just stole it.

Normal is assuming I’m screwed and I’m going to have to scramble. Normal is not what we have here on Bowen.

We’ve got something special, something extra, just like this sweet little seven-toed kitty who lives by the ferry. We’re kinda different. Kinda magical. Kinda cool.

Others initiate smaller projects that nevertheless enrich our daily lives. A few go that extra step to shape the community, visualize dreams and aspirations, and undertake solutions. And of course, there are the more subtle heroes who have quietly put in time, year after year, to make the island a better place.

Supporting our children’s growth, meeting our seniors’ needs, aiding our unwell and our unfortunate – all of that is only possible through the gift of someone’s time. We need your input to honour these acts of kindness. So we ask: Who do you think has made a difference to Bowen?

Spear sisters’new film released while they bask in Leo win

“You want to be filmmakers, you have to see Alien, and we fell in love with it,” Sam told Furminger of the sisters’ reaction when they rented the movie. “I remember being aware of how special it was to see a female in the lead.”

Alien Ore, which was primarily filmed at Britannia Mine, marks another achievement for the sisters. They won the 2019 Leo Award for Best Screenwriting in a Short Drama.

RIP Dr. Alex (“Dooley”) Goumeniouk (Nov 2, 1957 – June 11, 2019) “Dooley will always have a place in our hearts for his love of this island, his brilliant contributions to medicine, his grand sense of style and, of course, his larger-than-life presence,” said his Bowen neighbours and friends.

After an epic final evening of outrageous tales and Elton John tunes with his family and old friends, Bowen Island’s Dooley Goumeniouk passed peacefully at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital.

His enthusiasm for life was legendary and he’d packed a lot into his 61 years.

Living on Bowen since 1989, he was hard to miss in his colourful attire, shoes, eyewear, and watches. He was a charter member of the golf club, and often used to sail with his mother Vi and stepfather Fred Davies, also of Bowen.

Professionally, Dr. Goumeniouk had recently been the director of psychiatry services at Bowen’s own Orchard Recovery Centre and helped establish other several residential treatment centres for eating disorders and drug or alcohol addiction.

Said one patient, “Words can’t express the gratitude I feel for his kindness, humour, understanding and, most importantly, the confidence he helped restore in me when I was at the lowest point in my life.”

As a physician-scientist, he served as a consultant to global pharmaceutical companies and lectured all over the world. He also spent 25 years both as a clinical psychiatrist and professor of pharmacology before retiring from the Huntington’s Disease Clinic and UBC as a clinical professor emer-

itus. He was often recognized for his gift for teaching and received international teaching and fellowship awards. He loved to share his broad knowledge and passions with students, patients and the community, including Bowen’s Seniors Keeping Young.

As a visionary physician-entrepreneur, he held two U.S. patents for innovative bio diagnostic testing and delivery. HIs great passion for business started with Response BioMed; he later set up CINEDOCs Consulting Corporation, Aequus Pharmaceuticals, Plan B Pharmaceuticals and Medex Technologies Corp.

Lise, his love and partner of 42 years, managed all of his companies and also recently started her own local artisanal treats business, bowen bites.

Grad Dad

Well I knew this day would come. Our son is graduating from high school and he leaves for university in September. So many unknowns and we expect to see some major changes to our daily routines. Am I going to drive my wife nuts?

What will it feel like to come home with a much quieter house? Who is going to do the dishes and take out the garbage?

The list goes on but over the past year I’ve realized it is time.

It will be a transition for all of us.

The change from childhood to adulthood was all too evident at the Orpheum last Sunday when the Rockridge grads crossed the stage to pick up their diplomas. The Bowen “kids” we saw on stage were definitely not kids anymore; rather poised young men and women, so different than how we remember so many of them not too long ago.

the daily commute by ferry, I think many will look back on this unique traveling experience as a ritual that encouraged close bonds and that few other students in Metro Vancouver get to experience.

I will miss seeing them in the morning; doubling my son on motorbike to school on the 6:20 a.m. ferry to catch jazz band practice before school (I don’t think he’ll miss that) and seeing him on his return home. With our busy lives it is sometimes the only time I get to see him on a workday. We are also fortunate that we have some great universities and colleges close to the island. We’re certainly grateful that our son will be attending Simon Fraser University, close to home yet far enough away so that he can start to fend for himself.

To all the graduates, and I’m sure I speak for many parents: best of luck on your new journey! While at times we may be a pain in the ***, we’re proud of you.

Don’t forget about us on Bowen – if you’re moving away for your next chapter; visit us, consider getting some work experience on island. We can hope that you’ll maybe even consider raising your own family on island one day … but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Bret had a great 18.5 years on Bowen attending IDLC, homeschooling, BICS and IPS. He couldn’t have asked for a more supportive friends and teachers. After moving to Bowen Island in 2004 from an island in Hong Kong, and a break of two years on the island of Abu Dhabi, Rockridge gradub ate Spencer Beatty, honours with distinction, is off to the island of Montreal to attend McGill University, where he will study economics.

Robin would like to thank her friends and family on Bowen Island who have always been there for her. She is thankful to have grown up in such a wonderful community that she is grateful to call home.

After living here all her life, she will be staying on Bowen for at least a little bit longer before finding her way elsewhere. Robin is graduating from Rockridge and will be taking a gap year to work and travel before heading off to university to study sciences.

After a seemingly endless (although mostly enjoyable!)

12 years of education, I’m finally about to come crashing into the next chapter of my life. Before I continue, I want to thank all the people on Bowen who’ve helped shape me into the person I am. An even bigger thank you goes to my family, friends, and all my current and past school and music teachers. I can’t even begin to imagine my life without you all. For my next steps, I’ll be going into the CIT program at BCIT in January, after I travel to Taiwan sometime in the fall.

I loved every minute of growing up on Bowen. From preschool through BICS and now at West Vancouver Secondary, I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

From swimming at Sandy Beach to playing little league and everything in between, this truly is the best place on earth to be a kid. Thank you to my parents, Mary Ann and Paul, and my brothers, Charlie and Jack, for everything you’ve done for me. I will be continuing my athletic and academic career at the University of Western Ontario on a football scholarship.

Benji has had a great time over the past 16 years on Bowen. Before that, he was living in Spain and Prague.

He could not have asked for more supportive friends. His time at Rockridge brought about countless invaluable experiences and brought about his passion for both traditional and computer sciences! He can’t thank his family, friends, teachers, and mentors (a special thank you to his mum, Mr. Taguchi, and Jason Campbell!) enough for their support over the past few years. After travel in the summer, it’s off to UVic in the fall for computer science!

Sophie would like to thank her friends and family for making her childhood so memorable. It’s crazy to think I’m graduating when it seems just yesterday I was running around Bowen, playing soccer at the turf field and swimming at Sandy Beach. I played hockey in Kelowna this year so didn’t graduate with my Bowen friends but will join them for a memorable Bowen summer. Long-term plans include gaining an education through hockey. Cephalopod Week invades the Strawberry Tea SARAH HAXBY

Why was there an octopus invasion at the Strawberry Tea, which included music

by Bob Doucet and an impromptu singalong of Ringo Starr’s “Octopus’ Garden” and a medley of songs with octo-altered lyrics? How did local artist and cartoonist Ron Woodall end up getting swarmed by knitted Gothtopus puppets, which local artist Vikki Michele Freckelton has been knitting for the past four years?

The backstory: Vikki Michele’s friends have been trying to cheer her up lately, because unfortunately she and her family are having to move off Bowen Island.

I came up with a novel way to alleviate some of the stress and sadness of having to leave Bowen: by holding an art challenge to create strawberry octopus artworks and then have an octopus swarm at the Strawberry Tea event. After all, in a small community it is important to celebrate local culture by supporting old and new traditions!

We were inspired by Science Friday’s Cephalopod Week, (June 14 to 21) which declares that, “Every year, during the third week in June, we take time to honour those mighty cephalopods, the clever mysterious creatures...thousands of you all over the world join the cephalo-bration by reading, watching, sharing, and getting together with your fellow cephalo-fans.”

Local Gothtopus knitter Vikki Michele knit fabulous red and a white strawberry gothtopus puppets and I designed a Celtic-inspired two-dimensional strawberry octopus hosting a tea party. Local friends and artists and octopus fans were invited to the event within an event via Facebook.

The Strawberry Tea is an annual tradition for the United Church. It is both a fundraiser and a lovely annual community event and this year, as a surprise, there were an octet of octopi at the tea, more than a dozen friends, artists and various cephalopod fans joined in the fun…possibly starting a new tradition, or just a onetime bit of fun.

This wormy looking critter is one of the sand worms (also called ragworms). Citizen Science projectssuchastheBowenNatureClub’sLowTide Beach Survey contribute valuable information about local environmental conditions. All the plants and animals were returned to places near where they were discovered.

Starting in 2013, many sea star species up and down the west coast suffered massive die offs. Our local purple star was one of the most affected species. The causes remain unclear and where recovery has occurred it seems both patchy and slow. Don Heth’s grandson Mauritz discovered this purple star.

The Low Tide Beach Survey called for buckets, spades and footwear suitable for flipping rocks to discover cool stuff. Three dozen turned up for a Sunday morning of discovery led by Bowen Nature Club’s DG Blair, Alan Whitehead, and Sue Ellen Fast.

New co-owner joins Catching Stars Gallery just in time for 1st anniversary BRONWYN BEAIRSTO

Thiago Ramirez is the new co-owner of Catching Stars Gallery on Trunk Road, which is celebrating its one-year anniversary on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m..

The Undercurrent recently caught up with Thiago. The following is an edited interview with the soon-to-be Bowener.

When did you come to Bowen?

I actually don’t live here yet. I just bought a property here last year, so we are planning to move in August. We can’t wait to move.

Why did you guys choose Bowen?

We came here when we moved from Brazil, so it was 2016, and we fell in love with the island. I came from a small town in Brazil so I like to live in small communities.

And I used to live in São Paulo, which is completely the opposite.

I wanted to get back to small city vibes. My wife loves it here as well and we decided to buy something here.

What’s your art?

So I’m a landscape photographer but I also do travel photography. So anytime I travel, I take pictures, like the cities and everything. But I try to focus on landscapes.

And so then how did this opportunity to join Catching Stars come about?

So last year, I was looking for a way to start putting my work out on the market. I’ve been a photographer for 10 years but I didn’t know how to put my work out there. How to show it and how to trust that I’m a photographer, right? So this was a big step for me. Before, I was an amateur. And now I can consider myself professional. I came here to talk to Marie

[Neys] and Emilie [Kaplun] and I got the opportunity to be an associate here at first. And this year, they invited me to be an owner, which was awesome. And since then, we’ve been working together and it’s really good.

It’s not like a dream, because I couldn’t dream of this before. I just wanted to try to sell my work and to show it to people. So this has gone better than I expected.

I also have some business background, I started out as a business administrator, so it all came

And what excites you about Catching Stars?

It’s nice to be here and to be involved with all these amazing artists. I feel like I’ve improved the way I create my art. Sometimes people think “but it’s just photography,” right? You go there, you click and that’s it, right? Being here and seeing a lot of this work, visual work, it helps me to improve my eye for photography. So it’s

amazing for me to see people’s work, and their process of creating this work. It’s also, I never thought of the process. Now I’m thinking, “Oh right, I have a process.” Like I go there, I scout the location, I make the composition. Before that, before being involved with other artists, I would never think of it. For me, it was like, “All right, I clicked, I have the picture.” It was kind of automatic in my in my head. So yeah, it’s amazing being here to have this this whole new world of art.
