Keep reporting bear sightings, RCMP MERIBETH DEEN EDITOR
The Bowen Island RCMP received a call on the week of September 13th reporting the sighting of a young black bear near Cowan Point. Since then, sighting reports have been popping up on social media. According to those reports, the bear has been seen on Cates Hill, Tunstall Bay and in the Eaglecliff area. Cpl. Paulo Arreaga says that it is important for people to continue to call-in sightings to the RCMP. “I’ve heard that people are afraid we’re going to shoot it,” says Arreaga. “That would certainly be a last resort. We’re on it’s territory. We rely on provincial conservation authorities if
we think some kind of action needs to be taken.” Cpl. Arreaga says having worked with the RCMP in North Vancouver he has experience following up on bear sightings. “In North Vancover, we would follow the bear around to make sure it wasn’t getting into places that are too densely populated,” he says. “Here on Bowen, the main concern is Snug Cove.” Arreaga says that local schools have been notified of the bear’s presence, and told to simply be aware that it might be nearby if children will be playing outside. “We don’t know if this bear is even still on Bowen, but if it is we need to continue to monitor its whereabouts and activities,” says Arreaga.

In order to turn the Bowen Island Library into a cultural hub in Snug Cove, the Library in co-operation with the Bowen Island Arts Council set a fundraising goal of $950,000. Roughly two years after gaining municipal approval for their plan, the groups have managed to raise 70 percent of the necessary funds, or $665,000. The design of the building, based on an earlier concept by Bob McGilvray, is the work of Bowen architect James Tuer. It includes a breezeway connecting the existing library building, to the second building. The arts council and library will each operate their own spaces in the building as well as share common areas. This configuration preserves the architectural aesthetic of the front of the library building - a much cherished heritage building for the community. “James has spent a lot of time envisioning how our two organizations could best share this new building,” says Chief Librarian, Tina Nielsen. “For the library he has designed a flexible, serene and lofty space with great views to the forest. There will be big, tall windows and open space for a variety of functions and programs.” “He has a great vision for north facing light sources in the art gallery that will highlight the art with bright but controlled natural daylight,” added Jacqueline Massey, Executive Director of BIAC. Recently, Tuer produced a booklet full of visuals that highlights the concept and design of the new building. He commissioned an artist to create a watercolor rendering of the building and its surroundings. “It was really helpful to have a watercolour rendering of our new design to display at Bowfest,” says Tina. “We’ve received great feedback, and a number of donations have come in since than.” The location and design of the new addition allows for the creation of a south-oriented “town square” type area. “James Tuer is also a landscape architect and has designed a wonderful plaza area with seating and low-level lighting that will give people the feeling they are in a three-sided outdoor room,” says Nielsen. The construction of the building, at 2,800 square feet, will necessitate the removal of between eight and ten parking spaces from the North Parking lot. Under current bylaws, the space will require 16 parking spots. Municipal staff is currently working with the Annex/Gallery Steering Committee on a plan for options to reconfigure or expand parking on the lot.
