Bidding frenzy raises the roof at art auction LOUISE LOIK EDITOR
Marc Baur is very pleased to have helped raise funds for the Arts Council. The picture that was auctioned was only a fraction of the size of the one behind him but was created with the same inspiration and technique. LOUISE LOIK photo
Input wanted on transportation LOUISE LOIK EDITOR
Bowen Island Municipality has launched a program to engage the community in decision-making around an Integrated Transportation Master Plan. Looking for a way to create a more efficient and sustainable transportation system, the municipality wants input planning for active and alternative transportation, transit, regional connections, roads and parking. It takes a few minutes to join the PlaceSpeak system but this may ideally reduce the chance of a single user posing as a majority by submitting
multiple responses. Once you are into the system you can choose the area or region, or topics you would like to follow. The subjects currently up for discussion include: Bowen’s transportation plan; greenhouse gas emissions; improving bus service; walking around Bowen; and cycling on Bowen. Currently discussions meant to focus on transportation issues range from a comment about wanting taller buildings in the cove to a point made about looking at new technologies in eco-transportation. There were a few surprises in store for people who showed up at the Art Gallery on Friday night last weekend. For one thing, they had come to bid on small, unsigned paintings, the artists, supposedly a secret. Naturally, some artists have a signature style or favoured theme that makes it easy to guess which painting came from their hands. Nonetheless, there are always surprises, which is a big part of the evening’s fun. The auction drew a sell-out crowd as it does year after year, but this year, the 12th annual Minis Gala, the sales broke all records. With bidding going higher than usual on three of the most sought-after paintings, the artists and patrons raised $10,000. Two paintings the size of a paperback novel went for $500, and the highest-priced painting, done by Marc Baur, went for $700. Art at these auctions may sell because a bidder wants to be supportive of a friend’s artwork, it depicts a relatable scene for them, or the colours resonate with the bidder. A professional artist may see his or her art sold for less than a weekend painter’s work. Auctions like this are somewhat unpredictable. The evening, which started with wine, snacks and piano music, moved quickly into the auctioneering, led by David Cameron. Friends began bidding against friends while others watched, curious to see who would go the furthest with their bids. Baur was there, watching the process unfold as his painting came up for bid. “This was a real thrill for me. There were several people aggressively bidding back and forth. It was kind of funny.” One of the bidders, Doug Leishman, already owned a few works by Baur and was clearly a fan. Baur’s work stood out with its bright colours and unusual technique. Baur uses fibrous coloured paper layered onto the canvas instead of paint. Based on an art form called Chigiri-e that originated in Japan, the paper isn’t pasted. Instead, the pieces of roughly torn paper are soaked in a polymer before Baur applies them to canvas. The process builds layers drenched in rich and brilliant, high-gloss colour. Baur says the technique isn’t true to the Japanese art form in that his work is “highly impressionistic.” From a distance, the work looks painted, but upon approach, the texture shows itself to be different from the painted works. Baur was an actor for 30 years, and prior to that worked as an art director for film after studying at the college that is Emily Carr University of Art + Design. He only began to really explore the possibility of being a full-time artist after arriving on Bowen in 2011. He credits the Arts Council for, “putting a boot in my back,”
