BOWEN ISLAND According to Bowen Heritage, Bowen Island first began to attract THE HAPPY ISLE

visitors from the mainland in the early 1900s. This was at a time when Vancouver had few restaurants and when beer parlours were the only place to legally drink in public.

As Vancouverites and others began visiting what was to soon become known as The Happy Isle, the Union Steamship Company saw an opportunity and began launching $1 excursions to the island on its flagship, the Lady Alexandra. The company made the trip all the more enjoyable by keeping passengers entertained en route with dancing, fine dining and a full-service bar.

The Union Steamship Company also bought and developed Mount Strahan Lodge in Snug Cove to include a dance pavilion accommodating 800 couples on its sprung-wood floor, clay tennis courts, a salt-water pool and sandy beaches.

The island became so popular, Union Steamship purchased the lands of early settlers such as William Davies and, in an early introduction to “glamping,” built nearly 200 cottages to accommodate visitors.

Tourists could take in a moonlight cruise, enjoy horseback riding, dance to big bands and try their hand at lawn bowling. Between 1937 and 1946, Bowen Island was hosting between 100,000 to 150,000 visitors a year.

Today this small island, located in the Salish Seas, is still renowned for its West Coast-inspired indoor and outdoor adventure and activities. It boasts unique venues and accommodation, stunning scenery, arts and culture, and speciality food and drink offerings.

Special events, meetings and gatherings are made memorable when surrounded by the rugged terrain and sweeping views of the Happy Isle.

It’s not likely any participants will be watching the clock when the company’s team building exercises are held in kayaks or upon stand-up paddleboards. Or when swinging a golf club.

Corporate team or family reunion members can rent scooters or eBikes to traverse the hills and trails of Bowen Island. It can be arranged to have eBikes waiting for foot passengers walking off the ferry or at their accommodation.

If it’s a wellness retreat you’re after, imagine a rejuvenating yoga class set against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean. Imagine forest bathing, described by the Global Wellness Institute as “Not simply a walk in the woods, it is the conscious and contemplative practice of being immersed in the sights, sounds and smells of the forest.”

Bowen has become synonymous for putting the “Wow!” in weddings, whether set against the crashing waves of the ocean or an outdoor extravaganza, including a long-table dinner in a farmer’s field, or an intimate backyard affair illuminated by candles and lanterns.

Locals deliver unique and memorable events

Event planner Basia Lieske, a long-time islander, recollects that one of the most memorable wedding receptions she ever coordinated was set in the forest, at dusk, and included a collection of long harvest tables illuminated by romantic candles. “It was really out of this world beautiful!” exclaims Basia, who owns Bowen Event Rentals and Event Planning with her husband Paul Lieske. She adds magical forest-themed weddings are just one example of the many unforgettable creations available for anyone planning a special event on Bowen Island, including milestone birthdays, anniversaries, celebrations of life, corporate team building, wellness retreats, sports tournaments, fundraisers and more.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED IS ON THE ISLAND Another unique event Basia helped plan included a surprise 40th Great Gatsby birthday party. The 'birthday girl' took part in what she thought was a treasure hunt with her adoring husband and children, with plans to go out for dinner afterwards: when the family arrived at the Tunstall Bay Clubhouse, Mom opened the door to the boat house to discover all of her friends and extended family there to surprise her. “So, all the guests were in the boat house dressed in roaring ‘20s clothes yelling ‘Surprise!’ when she walked in,” laughs Basia “That was really cool.” Basia maintains when it comes to planning any kind of special event on Bowen Island, it truly takes a village.

And, when it comes to villages, Bowen is blessed with an abundance of talented, like-minded, welcoming, and knowledgeable caterers, bakers, makers, artists, jewellers, outdoor guides, guestaccommodations and venue providers, farmers, musicians, and the all-important portable toilet renters. She cheerily adds that her husband Paul can even build themed props should the need arise.

And it can be very affordable to plan an event on Bowen Island,” offers Basia. “Décor can be big or small catering to a range of budgets – we work with the clients’ vision - we can even go into the woods or fields to gather natural elements to create the perfect look for your event!

Bowen Island has an outstanding flower shop that can create wonderful flower displays for any kind of event” clarifies Basia. “We have photographers, hair stylists, make-up artists and nail experts, as well as musicians with repertoires from blues to classical to cover band music. We've got everything you need to throw a memorable event, including party furniture and tabletop rentals”

EVENT PLANNING ON BOWEN -IT'S A VILLAGE APPROACH! Because all of the services on Bowen Island are offered by small business owners, everyone works extra hard and in synch to ensure a special event is not only spectacular, but also comes off without a hitch. We are a really creative bunch and work together,” confirms Basia. “And it's great because all of sudden creative juices are flowing and the next thing you know, you're creating something that's really amazing."

She points out that a trend she’s witnessing postCovid-19 is the return of large weddings, which on Bowen Island are often outdoors. And while Bowen is famous for its stunning beachfront weddings, Basia notes there are many other locations, which are just as dramatic, photo-worthy, and spectacular, including long-table receptions at Home Farm, which specializes in farm-to-table menus.

“It’s an organic produce farm with meals served family style right in the field, among the rows of vegetables,” jokes Basia … “And they even have sheep!”

If artisanal drinks are part of any corporate event, weekend getaway or reunion itinerary, Copper Spirit Distillery is the place to start. Popular for its tastings and tours, the distillery was opened by Miguel and Candice Kabantsov, who had a goal to create “clean, organic spirits.” While Miguel distills spirits that are wonderful to sip straight, Candice blends delightful botanicals into delicious clean cocktails.

The second stop on this tasting tour would have to be award-winning Riley’s Cidery, which is set among 1,000 varieties of heirloom apples on a one-of-akind apple orchard. This Bowen Island cidery is also popular with small groups looking to book tastings by appointment. .

When it comes to team building, groups can take to the water and enjoy sea kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding, enjoy a round of golf followed by drinks at the Bowen Island Gold Course — carved from a West Coast rainforest, tour the island on an e-Bike or motorized scooter, hike the island’s many trails or try their hand at fishing.

Meanwhile wellness retreats allow participants to take a break from their busy lives by eating healthy, locally grown foods, forest bathing and bending into their favourite yoga poses on the beach as the sun rises over the ocean and mountains.

Basia is passionate about her work and has amassed a collection of more than 1000 seashells, which can be used to help decorate coastalthemed, authentic events. “My husband, Paul, also collects beautiful driftwood so he builds arches, table centre pieces and unique one-off decorations”. “Here on Bowen Island, we are the real West Coast inspiration, and it works. You’re not going to have that cookie cutter event here.

Basia maintains the collaborative spirit of the island’s business owners means a large event, such as a wedding, can come together in a few months, while some smaller gatherings can be planned to perfection in as little as several weeks. According to Basia, event planning on Bowen Island is only limited by imagination — but considering these ideas are born collectively by locals — there is no limit to what they can envision and accomplish.
