This year has tested our ties – of family, of community, of country. But as we gather for the holiday season, we’re looking for hope.

Our holiday makers are pulling out all the stops as Bowen Islanders find ways to reconnect after the pandemic stripped us of social connections nearly two years ago.

As we learned last year, it’s not gifts we miss when we lose our holidays – it’s people. It’s our opportunity to chat with Connie, catch up with Zac, gab on with Gerald as we peruse. It’s our chance to reminisce with Jani, browse with Susan, sample with Joanne. To talk dogs with Kim, and talk kids with Will.

In these pages are the island artisans, crafters, businesspeople keeping the economic heart of this island alive – keeping our community thriving.

They are our holiday makers.

Holiday Bakers Bronwyn Beairsto

Dad's holiday Christmas party cookie recipe Once or twice, when I was a teenager, I made cookies for my Dad's work Christmas party. Ever since, he's made (and tweaked) the recipe every year – still telling folks they're Bronwyn's cookies.

He'll be retiring soon, so this will be the last year of his cookie tradition.

1 Cup Butter 1 ½ Cups Brown Sugar 2 Eggs 1 tsp Vanilla 1 ½ Cups Flour (Brown) 2 ½ Cups Rolled Oats 2 tsp Baking Soda 1 tsp Salt 12 oz. pkg. Raisins 1 ½ Cups Chopped Nuts

Cream butter and sugar. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Add flour, oats, baking soda and salt. Mix well and stir in chips and nuts.

Drop spoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets and bake at 350 F for 12 to 15 minutes.

It makes three dozen cookies.

Dad’s Note: Double the recipe, but not the baking soda, and only 1 ½ tsp salt.

Connie's Shortbread 1 lb. butter, I use salted, room temperature 4C. Flour 1C. Icing sugar 1/2 tsp vanilla Cream butter, add vanilla, then icing sugar.

Add flour and start kneading dough and continue kneading until all cracks disappear.

Pat out onto a cookie sheet, spreading dough evenly. Then prick all over with fork.

Bake in 275 degree oven for 45-60 minutes until edge is lightly brown.

Take out and cut into fingers and place on cooling rack.

I love to dip one end into melted chocolate.

Fabulous with cup of tea.

This is our family recipe that I’ve been using for 60 years. Only make it for Christmas even though shortbread is great all year but keeping it for Christmas makes it more special and always reminds me of family and all the baking I did with Mom.

Piernik: Gingerbread Cake ~ A Polish Festive classic!

Piernik comes from an Old-Polish word ‘pierny’ which means ‘peppery’. However ground ginger is not a part of this recipe … the real star ingredient is honey. Piernik is served traditionally at Christmas time in Poland.

Piernik is soft with a depth of sweetness from the honey. Aromatic because of the allspice, clove, nutmeg and cinnamon, and it has a bit of citrus ßavour from orange zest. A dark chocolate glaze adds complexity to the mix and makes our taste buds even happier. This combination of ßavours really makes me think of the holiday season and miss being close to home even more.

My ciocia (aunty) Danka taught us all how to make this delicious honey spice cake. She insisted the dough be made the day after St. Andrews Day (November 30th) and the cake to be served on Christmas Eve. Danka would say ~ “I know these things. A good Polish honey cake needs a long time to mature to develop its aromas and perfect texture.”

Polish Honey Gingerbread with Dark Chocolate Glaze

For the Gingerbread 1 cup honey (use high quality honey)

2/3 cup granulated sugar

2 cups ßour

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 teaspoon ground cloves

1/2 teaspoon ground allspice

(Can also add: star anise & cardamom)

3 large eggs

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 cup candied orange peel

For the Filling 1 cup dried prunes

Zest of 1/2 a lemon

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

(Other suggested Þllings: Plum jam, marmalade, marzipan or walnut cream)

For the Chocolate Glaze 3 tablespoons unsalted butter

4 teaspoons light corn syrup

1 tablespoon water

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Garnish: Piernik can be garnished with candied orange tossed in granulated sugar, sugared cranberries, chopped walnuts or pecans.

include some of our favourites: Candy Cane Lane with the Gingerbread House, North Pole with Snowmen, Bowen Tree “Farm” & the Nutcracker theme. We are also creating a winter forest with all our deer at Cates Corner.
