BOWEN LOVES TO DANCE This year’s Dock Dance happened Saturday, August 1 on the grass at the Union Steamship Marina, featured live music and, most notably, lively participants. Beginning September 1, 2026 until the close of general voting for the election on Saturday, October 17, 2026, a copy of the list of registered electors will be available for public inspection at Bowen Island Municipality (address and hours below).

Bowen Island Municipality will be undertaking essential repairs to the Snug Cove North and South Docks following engineering inspections that identified structural deterioration requiring repair to ensure continued safe use of the facilities.

The repairs are necessary to maintain public safety and the long-term functionality of these important community assets. Construction commenced on August 5, 2026, with dock closures expected to take place in the upcoming weeks. Notice will be provided before any closures take place.

The work will be phased between the South Dock and North Dock. During construction at each dock, that dock will be closed to the general public.

An operable gate and signage will be installed at the active construction area, with controlled access maintained for emergency vehicles and owners or operators of vessels moored at the floating docks.

The work is expected to take approximately 1 to 2 weeks on the South Dock and approximately 1 week on the North Dock, although timelines may change depending on permitting, weather, tides, and construction conditions.

During construction, users may experience temporary impacts, including: Access restrictions or temporary closures of affected dock areas Changes to moorage and marine access Impacts to water taxi operations and other dock users Temporary relocation of bicycle storage facilities Disruptions to recreational programming and activities at the wharf Construction noise, equipment, and barge activity in the Snug Cove area Please note that 24-hour ambulance access will be maintained throughout the repairs.

The Municipality is working closely with service providers, emergency services, user groups, and affected organizations to minimize disruptions and maintain essential services wherever possible.

VIEWPOINTS Another Heavenly Day at Happy Days JUDE NEALE Contributor

Jackie Minns’ Winnie was magnificent because she understood that Beckett’s comedy is built over an abyss.

From the moment she appeared, fixed in that impossible mound of earth, she gave us not a woman performing endurance, but a soul practicing it in real time. Every gesture mattered.

The hand searching the bag. The careful arranging of small objects. The lifted face.

The bright social voice. The sudden fissures where terror entered before being instantly mastered. Nothing was casual. Nothing was wasted.

When she spoke Beckett’s famous line, “Another heavenly day,” it did not arrive as mere absurdity. It came as one of the bravest sentences in theatre: a woman greeting catastrophe with manners, wit, and almost unbearable hope.

That was the magnificence.

Jackie allowed us to see the full contradiction of Winnie: ridiculous and noble, trapped and radiant, abandoned and still companionable, frightened and still insisting on form. Her voice moved between music and fracture. A smile could become a wound. A pause could reveal the whole terror of mortality. She made the smallest action, reaching, brushing, remembering, calling out, feel like a sacrament of survival.

David Cameron as Willy was the necessary counterweight to her radiance. His presence was sparse, comic, earthbound, and haunting. He gave Winnie’s solitude an echo. In Beckett, love is often partial, damaged, bewildering, and still desperately needed. David let us feel that.

And in the last scene, his presence became unbearably tender. The movement toward Winnie, the frailty, the effort, the almost impossible reach toward connection, changed the air in the room. What could have been merely bleak became inti-

You wonder which universe they are living in.

Because many realize that continuing on the path leads to collective harm because of climate change, but also – on a less dark note - because we are sick and tired of being dependent on the oil and gas industry with its outrageous rapid price increases and never going back to the price level it was before, even though the price of a barrel of oil has come down to previous levels.

No more gouging! And more no hardearned taxpayers dollars flowing as subsidies to the oil and gas industry.

So we make our individual chances in the

hope that will make a difference.

And it does. Opt for an e-bike. Or an electric vehicle, because it is far more economical to drive and maintain. Install a heat-pump to bring down the costs of home heating.

Eat less meat, and more plant based protein. Grow your own food for part of the year. Install solar panels. And of course, how we spread the benefits of electrification and moving away from fossil fuels wider and farther, quicker, so many more people can benefit.

These are the kind of things we are talking about at the Climate Café, which we organized twice, once in June, once in July, and the third time will be at Bowfest on Saturday, August 29. So look for us there then. Come over to have a chat.

mate. The ending held not comfort exactly, but recognition: two human beings, diminished and separate, still drawn toward one another.

Andrew Cameron’s direction honoured the difficulty of the play. He trusted stillness. He trusted silence. He allowed the mound, the light, the pauses, and the small rituals to gather force until they became almost unbearable. Nothing was hurried.

The production gave us room to feel time closing in.

This performance opened a door on my own mortality. I felt, watching them, the earth rising around all of us: age, loss, illness, silence, the shrinking of the world.

And yet Winnie continues. She speaks. She remembers. She tends her little possessions as though order itself might save her. She calls into absence and makes language a kind of flame.

Jackie did not sentimentalize Winnie.

That is why the performance was so devastating. She trusted Beckett’s bleakness,

and because she trusted it, she found the tenderness inside it. She showed us that courage is not always grand. Sometimes courage is simply the next word. The next breath. The next absurd, gallant attempt to begin again.

By the end, I was not only moved by Winnie. I was implicated by her. She made me look at my own fleeting life: its vanities, its losses, its stubborn loves, its bright little rituals against the dark, and feel both chastened and grateful.

This was a production of intelligence, restraint, humour, terror, and grace. Jackie Minns, David Cameron, and Andrew Cameron gave us not an evening of theatre alone, but a mirror.

I left changed. More awake to time. More tender toward the body. More grateful for speech, memory, love, and the fragile privilege of another heavenly day.

The Hunt Is On! Golden Slugs hidden for Bowfest’s 50th Anniversary excitement the challenge was created to inspire.

Not long afterwards, another lucky young explorer, Rua Murray, found a Golden Slug at King Edward Bay Beach.

His excitement was contagious and reminded everyone that the next Golden Slug could be waiting around any corner.

With only two discoveries so far, dozens of Golden Slugs are still hidden across Bowen Island. They may be nestled beside a forest trail, tucked among beach driftwood, hiding in the Cove, or waiting in another public spot for a sharp-eyed adventurer to find them.

If you’re lucky enough to discover a Golden Slug, keep it safe and bring it to the Bowfest Field at 3:30 pm on Saturday, August 29. Your Golden Slug is your official entry into a secret, one-of-a-kind Bowfest game created especially for Bowfest’s 50th Anniversary celebration.

The Bowfest team would also love to see where the Golden Slugs are turning up. If you find one, snap a photo and share it on the Bowfest social media pages so the community can follow the adventure as more Golden Slugs are discovered.

So lace up your walking shoes, keep your eyes peeled, and start exploring. Your Golden Slug, and a little bit of Bowfest magic, could be waiting just around the next bend.

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Bowfest, a secret team of young artists from Island Discovery Learning Community gathered for a special rock-painting party, creating 50 one-ofa-kind Golden Slug rocks. Now those treasures have been carefully hidden in public places all over Bowen Island, turning the entire community into one big treasure hunt.

The Golden Slug Challenge is simple: keep your eyes open while you’re hiking a trail, exploring a beach, wandering through the Cove, or enjoying one of Bowen’s parks. If you discover one of the elusive Golden Slugs, you’ve found much more than a painted rock - you’ve earned your way into a special Bowfest adventure.

The excitement has already begun.

The very first Golden Slug was discovered by Julian Redmond, who spotted one tucked into a tree along the trail leading from the Lagoon to Melmore.

A Brilliant Mistake DAVID BERGER Contributor I got up very early at 5 am, I didn’t want to make any mistakes on this trip.

We began our 11-hour driving journey early, Friday morning, June 26.

Our destination was the weekend 22nd annual ArtsWells Festival held in Wells, BC between Quesnel & Barkerville in the Central Cariboo. The festival has many visual artists of numerous types showing their wares and there were a few comic plays - a Burlesque battle of Harlequin romance novels sounded intriguing.

Ultimately, it is a big music festival in a very small town (population 218) that always attracts a dizzying array of talented musicians, from Haida Gwaii to Toronto. In the independent Canadian music scene, playing at Wells is almost a musician’s right of passage.

The music of Black Pace & Kaluma Bongo Band (Mwayi Mphande singer, Shael Wrinch guitar & Sierra Wolfe percussion & vocals) with special guest Chris Herbsen on guitar, performed Saturday Night at the Wells Hotel and Sunday Night at Saras Church. The group had worked hard and prepared for this and they were marvellous. The audiences received them with enthusiasm and affection during both of their performances.

Traveller #5, Jane Wanjiru, was our talented photographer and as traveller #6, I was the roadie that can’t carry anything.

Mwayi assured me, my encyclopedic memory of World Cup trivia would be a huge help during the long drives.

In the end, the five of us must thank Shael Wrinch for the whole experience. Nothing happens without his inspiration and hardwork.

On our triumphant drive back to the coast, we each would choose songs to be played in the car. From the 1981 film Diva, I chose the aria from the opera La Wally sung by soprano Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez. As she began singing,

my friend turned to me and said with a very serious face: “I don’t like opera.”

I finally made a mistake, but it was a brilliant one.

Unfortunately, these ecosystems that we love are being threatened by global warming and the continued pollution of our oceans.

In response, The Hearth Gallery welcomes you to a Community Arts Workshop centered around the protection of BC’s oceans.

Painting supplies are provided as well as reference material. Please bring yourself and clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on. We will be painting outside The Hearth Gallery, please drop in and participate!

Learn about the giant pacific octopus’ astounding physiology, the bullkelps environmental impact, or the diversity of BC starfish, while painting them together as a community.

Participants are invited to donate $5 dollars to participate in the activity, however you are encouraged to donate more if you are able. All proceeds will be donated to the Bowen Island Conservancy for the continued protection of our beautiful wildlife.

This activity is a great opportunity to take a moment to appreciate the beautiful biodiversity that surrounds us, to learn more about the threats that our local marine life faces and to give back to the island through art. Let’s all come together for our oceans.

Caring for Nature: A small team’s big legacy for Bowen Island BOWEN ISLAND CONSERVANCY In September 2023, a small group of Bowen Islanders sat down together at the invitation of the Bowen Island Conservancy with a deceptively simple mandate: find out what is actually known about biodiversity on Nexwlélexwm / Bowen Island, and put that knowledge to work protecting it.

They called themselves Caring for Nature. Nearly three years later, that volunteer steering committee has produced the island’s first-ever Biodiversity Plan, built a public library of environmental knowledge, and put biodiversity data directly into the hands of the people making decisions about Bowen’s future.

The committee brought together professionals in environmental science, conservation biology, communications, planning, and geographic information systems, along with Bowen Island Municipality councillors Sue Ellen Fast and Judi Gedye serving as liaisons to local government. Bob Turner, a retired federal scientist and former Bowen mayor, has led the initiative from the outset.

The work built on a foundation report the Conservancy had commissioned earlier that year from Coast Range Environmental, and it was structured around three phases — plan, implement, monitor — a framework the team is still working through.

At the centre of the effort is the Nexwlélexwm / Bowen Island Biodiversity Plan, developed over 18 months in partnership with Simon Fraser University researchers Dr. Wendy Palen, Dr. Tom Sisk, and Jay Matsushiba. Dr. Palen and Dr. Sisk received a 2026 Community Stewardship Award from Islands Trust for their work.

vulnerable systems; and much of what matters most sits outside parks, on private and community-managed land.

The Plan doesn’t set new rules or rezone anything — its job is to make sure biodiversity is considered early, with good information, before decisions get made. Its findings are now feeding into the island’s new Official Community Plan process.

One finding runs through the whole plan more than any single map does. As the Plan puts it, the future of biodiversity conservation on Bowen “will be a responsibility shared by the public, private landowners, and government.” No single group — not the Conservancy, not the Municipality, not this committee of volunteers — can carry it alone. Put plainly, Caring for Nature turns out to be a bigger idea than the name of a steering committee. It’s the actual job description for everyone who calls this island home.

Alongside the science, the team built ways to keep that knowledge from disappearing again. The EcoLibrary gathered decades of reports, studies, and maps — some nearly lost in old project files and banker’s boxes — into a searchable public record. An island-wide compilation of environmental covenants is now used by the municipality. A set of interactive online maps, along with a series of printed thematic maps detailed enough to be displayed at Island Pacific School, gave residents new ways to see the island they live on.

The rest of the work was about bringing people along.

A well-attended public open house. A technical workshop that grounded the Biodiversity Plan in local expertise.

Presentations to Council, the OCP Steering Committee, and Planning staff. A talk at the Conservancy’s AGM. An information video and a redesigned website. Booths at Bowfest and other community events, anchored by a Bowen Nature Map that let people reimagine the ground under their feet. A biodiversity photo contest now heading into its third year, feeding a running Photo of the Month series in this paper — alongside a good many other Undercurrent articles charting the team’s progress along

the way.

None of it happened because anyone was paid to do it. It happened because a group of neighbours volunteered their time and expertise, and kept at it for three years.

Credit belongs to Bonny Brokenshire, John Dowler, Sue Ellen Fast, Judi Gedye, Len Gilday, Paula Hay, Will Husby, Sheree Johnson, Louise Loik, Jeff Matheson, Erica Olsen, Wendy Palen, Tom Sisk, Bob Turner, Edward Wachtman, and Alan Whitehead, along with the many Islanders who turned up to open houses, filled out surveys, submitted photographs, and shared what they knew.

The Biodiversity Plan is written and the OCP submission is in, but the underlying work doesn’t really stop there. Phase one of the initiative — plan — is nearly done; phases two and three, implementing and monitoring what’s been learned, lie ahead. And that work was never meant to rest on one small committee. Caring for Nature is the name of a volunteer team, but the Plan’s own findings make clear it’s also the job of every resident, landowner, and level of government on Bowen. The Conservancy hopes Islanders will take that to heart and join in.

First Credit Union gathering for the Welcome Figure PAULINE LE BEL Contributor The Welcome Figure initiative is a chance for everybody to contribute to a meaningful reconciliation project. Here’s the story of how our community credit union jumped on board: Our First Credit Union (FCU) on the island likes to do things in a good way.

First, they donated $10,000 to Knowing Our Place to support the carving of a Welcome Figure on the island. Then in June, as part of FCU’s Community Impact Day, the Bowen FCU Team joined community members and project supporters at Bowfest Field to meet Squamish carver, Xwalacktun, and learn more about the cultural significance of the Welcome Figure project, as well as the history and ongoing presence of Squamish Nation in the region.

Welcome Figures are traditional cedar carvings made by Coast Salish artists to offer greeting and hospitality to all who arrive on their territory. This project recognizes our historical relationship with Squamish Nation, and extends a visible, meaningful welcome to all who come to the island.

As an act of reconciliation and allyship, it invites us all into a shared future grounded

in respect and friendship.

Our afternoon gathering began with a talking circle — using the maquette (a small version of the welcome figure) as the talking piece. FCU Team, and members of the Knowing Our Place Team were joined by two other donors and Corporal Brad Savage of the Bowen Island RCMP who dropped by with his family. We introduced ourselves, shared our interests in reconciliation, and treated ourselves to juicy strawberries.

Xwalacktun shared stories of Squamish culture, including the powerful story of the Great Flood, and how the Squamish survived by tying their canoes to Mount Garibaldi until the waters receded. All in fun, I created a little quiz on Squamish culture that drew some interesting responses. Yes, the iconic twin peaks on the Coast Mountains were originally called Ch’ich’i yuy, the Sisters or Twins, a beautiful story of how two young sisters, taken captive by the Northern People, brought an end to the wars that had gone on for years. To gaze upon them is to be reminded that there are peaceful ways to resolve differences.

Police Message: Police responded to two common scams. The following is a summary with two different outcomes.

- One is commonly called a “Pig Butchering” Scam: A pig butchering scam is a sophisticated online fraud where scammers build trust with victims over time, then trick them into investing in fake cryptocurrency or other fraudulent schemes, often causing massive financial losses.

Over $50,000 was lost before police were contacted.

- The second one is commonly called an “emergency or grandparent” scam: Emergency frauds prey on your fear of a loved one being hurt or in trouble. Fraudsters claim to be someone you know and tell you they need money immediately. Due to the potential victim asking follow-up questions (What is your name, etc.) they quickly realized that it was a scam and no money was lost.

Fastpitch Tournament Weekend!

It’s one of the best Bowen weekends of the year, the annual Fastpitch Tournament! Just like last year all eyes will once again be on the Diggers entering the tournament as they finished top of the regular season standings for the second year in a row. This time they didn’t even need a tiebreaker to do it, wrapping up the league with weeks to go and ultimately clearing the 2nd place Brewers by 4.5 games.

It’s going to be tough for anybody to score enough runs on the Diggers to win multiple games against them - they allow just 5.9 scores against them per outing and gave up 26 less runs than the next closest tally. Dan Guillon, Adam Woodward and Erik Miller form a formidable three-headed monster on the mound and there’s a full compliment of defenders on the dirt and grass to back them up. Look for this team to be playing in the title game on Sunday night.

The tournament is full of suprises though and last year the Firemen were the ones who pulled off the victory (although they were very evenly matched with the Diggers during that season). Their repeat effort will take some work as the team finished with four fewer wins than last year and dropped below .500. The team has no problem scoring, but they’ll have to figure out their defense if they hope to hoist the trophy for the second straight season.

Two teams who took big leaps forward this year are the Brewers and Twins. They each went from finishing at the bottom of the standings to firm places in the top half of the table, improving their win totals by 4 and 3 respectively. The Brewers added some big bats to their lineup this year in Derek Sinke and Mike Vertlieb while the Twins are riding a youth injection with the kids of many current players (see the next page).

And though the Cruisers and Shakers were each hoping for more this year, their move down in the standings shouldn’t cause anybody to write them off. The Shakers have a speedy side who can cause trouble around the basepaths, and the Cruisers showed plenty of flashes this season especially when they had their whole team together. Playing at ‘Eddie’s Field’ may also give them an extra boost as they play in memory of their beloved player, coach and league legend Eddie Weismiller.

Speaking of the Twins family, even more of the team’s heritage was on display during a late season game against the Shakers near the end of July. This included a memorable moment when Ty Kenney (#15) crushed a 2-run home run to left in the 4th inning - scoring himself and his dad, Michael Kenney (#7). Mattias Behm (#5), who has family members Andy and Rhory alongside him on the team, also hit a home run to left in the 5th inning to score a pair.

Mattias had 3 runs and 4 RBI overall in the game. And Makai Jacquet (#18), playing with his dad Tyler (see above) had 3 runs and 3 RBI all while pitching 5 innings and striking out 3. The Twins took the tilt by a final score of 17-5.
