Seniors Keeping Young held a ceremony last week to celebrate a summer of swimming made possible through a federal grant.

While the swim sessions have been running for months (and last summer too), West Vancouver – Sunshine Coast – Sea to Sky Country MP Patrick Weiler made the announcement official at the Blue Cottage, which now serves as the headquarters of Seniors Keeping Young (SKY). The $24,564 grant through the government’s New Horizons for Seniors Program supports the daily summer swim program along with twice weekly aquafit classes with Billi Behm – both of which take place at the Tunstall Bay Clubhouse.

“I can tell from talking to everybody that’s here today how important this class is,” said Weiler. “It’s not just about finding an activity, it’s about giving people another reason to get together, stay active, build friendships, and remain connected in the community.”

“You’re hard-pressed to find a more close-knit community than Bowen anywhere in the country, and I know SKY has been creating these kind of opportunities here for years,” added the MP. CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

Tir-na-nOg opens the curtain on 39th season MARCUS HONDRO Contributor Tir-na-nOg Theatre, the children’s theatre on Bowen founded by Jack and Julie Headley in 1988, is all set for their 39th year of offering classes and producing theatre.

The Headleys say that enrollment is open and classes are being offered for a wide variety of ages.

This season classes will run from September 14 through June 20 and it marks the first year the Headleys will not be teaching. Due to health concerns for each they can no longer teach classes full-time; however, both will continue to be involved, among other things they’ll run the theatre administratively.

Teaching the classes for 2026-27 will be actor, director and teacher Calder Stewart, who took over last January and finished the year. He and his brother, Davin Killy, also an actor, grew up on Bowen; their parents, Karai Killy and Paul Stewart, are noted island jugglers and juggling teachers.

The affable Calder Stewart began his acting journey as a 6-year-old at Tir-na-nOg. He took classes and acted in plays there through the entirety of his youth.

Stewart is known for his enthusiasm for acting and the story is told that when the theatre on Rivendell opened in 2004, before seats had been installed, the young thespian was so excited about being in the new space that he started at one end of the building and ran down to the other end, going so fast that upon reaching the wall he had to put his hands up to stop and they went right through the drywall. His hand holes remain, now hiding behind the row of seats at the back.

As an adult Stewart has acted in dozens of plays. He’s also directed plays and taught children and adults on the island.

For the past seven years he has also taught at the First Step Actor’s Workshop in North Vancouver.

Many hundreds of island children have taken part in theatre at Tir-na-nOg. Children do not simply act, they make their costumes, help build the sets they perform in, act in annual theatre festivals (the Yuletide Story Festival and the season-ending Youth Festival of Plays) and even write plays.

More than 210 plays in total have been produced at Tir-na-nOg. The name is from an Irish myth and means ‘Island of Youth’ but this season, as in others, it’s not just youth that can get into the act

There will be an adult course running on Monday evenings.”

For the 2026-27 season, Tir-na-nOg is offering three different classes on each of Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. There’s also a Saturday morning class being offered

for younger children.

SKY member Baiba Thomson, who coordinates the swim program, spoke to the benefits of swimming for both physical and mental health. “The lack of any other pool facility on Bowen Island means the nearest alternative is West Vancouver Community Centre… Clearly, that’s a hardship,” she said, noting the time and costs associated with travelling there.

“To have something local available to us is, shall I just put it clearly: a godsend.

Supporting a swim program for seniors is not only a very wise investment for overall wellbeing and quality of life, but it’s also a substantial fiscal savings in the provision of healthcare for older people,” continued Thomson. “It really matters that we have this opportunity, and we’re enormously grateful for it.”

Thomson added that SKY were also deeply grateful to the Tunstall Bay Community Association for the use of their pool along with the longstanding positive relationship between the organizations.

VIEWPOINTS Tragically Hip in concert JUDITH GEDYE Contributor On Saturday, August 22 at 7 pm local time, CBC is broadcasting free on all their platforms and across Canada, the last Tragically Hip concert, to commemorate 10 years since that event.

CBC has given us permission to show that broadcast on our big screen in the Bowen Theatre. And Bowen Island Municipality has granted us most of the theatre costs.

We cannot charge admission unless all proceeds are for charity, so the family and the Bowen Community Foundation have agreed we can donate all funds to the Kip Thompson Scholarship, for youth interested in Arts programmes, and the Resilient Youth Fund, for youth interested in counseling.

The Bowen Community Foundation is providing tax receipts for all donations over $20 and they have provided a grant to pay for the custodian’s hours, advertising in The

Undercurrent, and possibly expenses for a concession if we can find volunteers to run that.

The Hearth: Arts on Bowen is providing insurance and The Undercurrent is discounting their advertising costs.

Michael Nankin is providing his technical know-how and Molly Horton is helping with front of house. All wins, all around.

The doors open at 6:30 pm and the concert starts at 7. If there is an overflow crowd we are working on having the audio and a smaller video broadcast in the Living Room at the Centre.

Sing along will be encouraged and hopefully there will be plenty of room to dance.

Open to all ages, with admission by donation (and a suggested minimum of $20).

I would love for everyone to be as generous as possible for the two youth funds that are so helpful in our community. A genuine Bowen community FUNdraiser! Enjoy!

A subversive Western at the Film Society MICHAEL NANKIN Bowen Island Film Society Something happens when people gather in groups. An audience. A congregation. A search party. A mob. A mind that didn’t exist before, that works differently than any of the individual minds that combine to create it, is born.

We draw strength from the group and we also draw anonymity. We are given permission to act in ways we might not as an individual.

The Bowen Island Film Society will present ‘The Oxbow

Incident’ as part of their Vault series of meaningful films from the past that shed light on current issues. The Oxbow Incident, based on the novel by Walter Van Tilberg Clark, was a passion project in 1948 of director William Wellman and star Henry Fonda. They felt that the comforting and familiar genre of the western would bring audiences to their cautionary tale of mob rule.

They wanted to make a Greek tragedy in a western setting, counting on the audience’s comfort with the genre, about a longed-for time when America was Great.

The film concerns itself with a hastily-formed posse that sets out to lynch the alleged killers of a local rancher – and

the outsiders (Fonda and Harry Morgan) who are swept up in the relentless drive. Once the saner voices are silenced, the posse moves relentlessly, convinced they are doing the right and just thing.

Wellman pays particular attention to individual closeups of the members of the posse, fascinated with how neighborly and unremarkable the faces of evil can be. The film is a clarion call and a warning about the dangers of mob rule.

The Oxbow Incident will screen on Thursday, August 20 at 6:30 pm at the Community Centre Theatre. Tickets are available in advance through Bowen Recreation or at the door.

Bowfest Saturday kicks off with Rotary Run HILARY BUTLER Bowen Island Rotary Club Hey kids (and those young at heart)! Next Saturday is Bowfest, your favourite day of the year! And that morning, you can start off the day at the 16th annual Bowen Island Rotary Run. If you are younger than 10 years old, you can do the run that goes from the Cove through Crippen Park up to Miller Road and back – a really easy one kilometre. Your registration for the run costs only $10 and, if you like, one of your parents gets to run or walk with you, for free.

This idea is great for younger brothers and sisters - last year we had a couple of two and three-year-olds! We usually start at the ferry dock but because the dock is being repaired, this year we will start and finish at the lagoon on the causeway. Bib pick-up is, as always, on the library lawn, however, and then you can do your practice run to the starting line.

The run starts at 8:45 am on August 29 but you need to get there earlier so that you are ready to go! At the end of the run, you get a great medal, then juice, fruit and muffins to reward you for all that hard work; what’s more, the first boy and the

first girl home win excellent prizes!

If you are a really good runner or pretty close to 9 years old or older, you could do the 5K run with your parents or friends or on your own. In fact, the whole family can run or walk, and it costs only $75 for the whole gang: you, your sister or brother, your parents, your grandma or grandpa and the dog. What a deal!

But for that price, you need to register online at komeracanada.ca, in fact we recommend that everyone signs up online. That longer run/walk starts at 9:15 am, which gives your parents time to get back from running with you to do their own run. Some of them will do the course (that goes up to the lake and back) twice so that they clock up 10 kilometres. There are lots of prizes for them too, even for your 12-year-old sister or brother.

If by any chance, however, you forget to get your registration done before Saturday morning, you can do it at the last moment, but that’s a bit of a rush and you will need to sign up on the Library lawn well before 8:45 am. By the way, we have some really cool T-shirts in exchange for a donation to Komera Canada.

So come out and join us. Your $10 helps to educate young girls in Rwanda. We look forward to seeing you there!

Ted Spear album maps a constellation of one man’s life LIBBY OSLER Contributor A few years ago, Ted Spear’s youngest daughter Lauren (aka Le Ren, the incredibly accomplished musician whose newest album ‘Don’t Be Funny Without Me’ drops August 28) promised her dad that if he ever wanted to, she would love to help him make an album one day.

Now if you are a long time Bowen Islander, I would bet my spot beside the Snug in the 7:30 am ferry line up that you know Ted. You might know him as a brilliant educator, loyal friend, stalwart community member, loving father, husband, and most recently grandpa (Congrats Kailey and Will!). But I want to talk about Ted the musician.

When Ted received Lauren’s gift, his immediate thought was no. Then he real-

ized that over the last 50 years he’d written a collection of songs sewn together from the most potent and precious moments of his life. So he flew to Ontario to meet Lauren at Port William Sound, where alongside producer Jonas Bonnetta they workshopped and recorded Ted’s debut album ‘A Moment Gone Too Soon’. You can hear Lauren singing across the album. Ted says she found the potholes in his songs and paved them with gold.

On July 19 at Tir-na-nOg Theatre, I was one of the lucky few who got to see Ted, a puck-like twinkle in his eye, play his entire album to a sold out house of exuberant fans, friends and family. His band: Lauren Spear, Jonas Bonnetta, Peter Clarke, David Graff, Peter McLean (w/ special appearances from Dyan Spear and Emily Allan) jokingly called themselves Ted Spear and the Defibrillators.

Pair of Islanders bring home Bronze from National Ultimate Championships JUDITH HEEZEN Contributor Two Bowen Island high schoolers had a summer to remember on the Ultimate Frisbee field, capping off a provincial title with a national bronze medal.

Pai Callewaert and Ella Vaziri, both Bowen Island students (Ella a recent grad), competed with their NorthVancouver-based club team, Canyon, at the Canadian Ultimate Championships (CUC) Juniors, held August 9 to 12 in Surrey. The pair helped Canyon finish third in the country in the Junior women division, earning a bronze medal against Vortex.

It was the second big result of the summer for Ella, Pai, and their team. In July, the same Canyon squad won gold at the BC Ultimate Championships in Kelowna — the provincial event that also served as BC’s qualifier for Nationals — before heading to Surrey to test themselves against the rest of the country.

What is Ultimate Frisbee?

For those less familiar with the sport, Ultimate is a fastpaced, non-contact team game played with a flying disc.

Two teams of seven advance the disc downfield by passing it player to player — no running with the disc allowed — and score by catching it in the opposing team’s end zone.

Notably, Ultimate is traditionally self-officiated, even at

the national championship level: players make their own foul and out-of-bounds calls and are expected to resolve disagreements fairly and respectfully. This ethos, known as “Spirit of the Game,” is a core value of the sport, and tournaments like CUC even hand out Spirit awards alongside gold, silver, and bronze medals.

A Summer of Growth For Pai and Ella, the road to the podium in Surrey started months earlier with tryouts, practices, and a full slate of tournaments leading into BC Ultimate Championships.

Their gold-medal run in Kelowna secured Canyon’s spot at Nationals, and the team carried that momentum into a hard-fought bronze in the Junior women division at CUC. Congratulations to both on a well-earned bronze medal, and on representing Bowen Island on the national stage.

Health Centre continues service expansion SUE MCINTYRE Executive Director / Bowen Island Community Health Centre Over the past year, the Health Centre has continued to expand both the care available on Bowen and the team delivering it. Our primary care team has grown to include four family physicians – Dr. Lindsay Downey, our Medical Director, Dr. Lydia Gibson-Boyce, Dr. Mike Norbury, and Dr. Stephanie Shorter – and our nurse practitioner, Laura FitzGerald.

As this team has grown, so too has the number of Bowen residents with access to ongoing primary care. Since opening our doors, we have attached more than 2,200 Bowen residents to a family physician or nurse practitioner at the Health Centre. And with our physician capacity growing again this September, we expect to be able to attach even more Bowen residents.

But as a Community Health Centre, primary care is about more than regular appointments with your family physician or nurse practitioner. Our team has also grown to include three registered nurses, expanding the range of primary care nursing services available on Bowen Island – from wound care and dressing changes to diabetes education and support with managing hypertension and other chronic conditions.

We have grown from having no clinical counsellors to three counsellors who together fill one full-time role, and recently a full-time social worker joined our team. Our three Community Support Coordinators also help people facing health and social challenges navigate services and connect

with resources that can make living on Bowen easier.

We also provide urgent primary care for island residents and visitors whose health concerns need timely attention but do not require special diagnostics or the resources of an emergency department. Over the past year, we have provided more than 1,500 urgent primary care appointments.

This spring, we introduced a clinical triage system to help people get the right care when urgent health concern arises. Our family physicians and nurse practitioner triage urgent concerns to determine how quickly care is needed and where it can be most appropriately and safely provided. Depending on the situation, we may care for you at the Health Centre or direct you to another service, such as the pharmacy, an Urgent and Primary Care Centre on the mainland, the emergency department, or 911.

Behind all of this are our Medical Office Assistants and administration team, who do a superb job making patients feel welcome, helping them navigate their care, and keeping our busy interdisciplinary team running smoothly.

What may surprise you is just how many other health services are now available here on Bowen. The Health Centre brings a growing range of visiting and community-based services to the island, helping residents access care closer to home without having to leave the island. At present these include: LifeLabs, whose Bowen service we advocated to expand from three to five days a week, with extended appointment hours; A podiatrist, who sees patients monthly; A speech and language pathologist, who visits two times a week and works with children up to kindergarten age; Optometrists, who come to the Health Centre every few months; A foot

care nurse, who comes every two months; A community pharmacist, who supports people with complex medication needs when referred by their family physician or nurse practitioner; and Foundry staff, who support young people experiencing mental health or substance use challenges.

Importantly, almost all these services are available to all Bowen residents regardless of whether they are attached to a family physician or nurse practitioner at the Health Centre.

The Health Centre takes the lead on the bi-monthly Community Lunch at the Legion, helping reduce social isolation, especially among seniors. We administer the Youth Resilience Program, funded by the Community Foundation, which provides young people aged 12 to 29 with access to a professional counsellor. We also look for opportunities to build strong community partnerships and have supported other Bowen health-related organizations in their applications for funding.

And finally, as many of you know, a full-service dental practice and a gym operate as independent businesses on our lower floor – offering even more opportunities to access services that support health and well-being without leaving the island.

Behind this high-level summary are real stories about how your Health Centre is making a difference in people’s lives. In future issues, we hope to share some of those stories and show what the growing range of care and services available here might mean for you, your family, and your neighbours.

A Logger Sports Show to remember GARY ANDERSON Bowen Logger Sports Wow! The Logger Sports Show this year was action packed, exciting and one of the best we have had since the first show we held in 2015 at the Middle Field in Crippen Park.

We would like to return to the Middle Field for accessibility, however Metro Vancouver will not let us dig holes for the climbing poles. Luckily we have Veterans Park that was built in 2016 by contractors and volunteers in five weeks.

It would be nice if the Bowen Island Municipality could put a biffie in the park as a lot of people use the park for more than the loggers sports it was built for. I have met people at the park from California, Wisconsin, Idaho, Germany, Finland and the Lower Mainland.

This year The Bowen Island Logger Sports Group installed two new 70-foot climbing pols that were donated by Bell Pole.

Handloggers Half enters its teen years PHIL OSBORNE Contributor The Handloggers Half Marathon trail race will turn 13 this year. The race is an annual fundraiser for things natural on Bowen Island including trails and conservation.

Since 2017, the race has distributed $35,000 of net proceeds to the Trail Society, the Conservancy and other charities. Donations were also made prior to 2017 but details not recorded.

The event is a great test of fitness and an amazing way to experience the beauty of Bowen Island’s mountain trail network. The race this year will draw participants from across Canada and the United States, Europe, South America and New Zealand.

Each year a dedicated core of volunteers works to improve the organization and delivery of the race based on knowledge gained from previous years and participation in similar events regionally and internationally. This year, as always, we have a focus on the safety of participants and

the public.

The safety team led by Steve Edwards and Amanda Ockeloen will run a pre-event training session to review safety measures, emergency response, first aid considerations, and on course communication for the event. We will also introduce improved tracking of runners on course with additional electronic timing equipment.

This year the race will start and finish on the causeway due to maintenance of the government dock but aside from that will follow a similar route to years past. The volunteer roster is filling up but there are still volunteer positions available – Sophie Idsinga and Zarah Hofer coordinate the organization of the volunteer team.

Album spans a lifetime of songwriting CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8

Each of the 11 songs tell a different story, but they all seem to explore the perennial questions: What kind of person do I want to be, and how can I become that person?

The brilliance of this album to me is how it gives us the rare experience of getting to hear a collection of songs written over the course of 50 years, like guiding stars in the constellation of a life. On “Matt’s Song” he sings: “Lately I’ve been wondering; what a man’s supposed to feel / In the frenzy of the moment, to see what’s truly real/ In a world so full of turmoil, where the future blinds the past/ Where’s the footing in the quicksand; where’s the rope around the mast?”

You’ll find songs here that can be companions, warm talismans, through all seasons of life. There are ones he wrote for loved ones gone too soon, others about trying to explain to the people you love just what they mean to you. It’s the special way you see me; like the coffee that you brew. Ted’s love for his family runs deep and vast on this album.

But, I defy you not to find yourself or your loved ones in these songs. It’s in their specificity that they shine ever the more universal. One of the most luminous moments of the album for me is in “Lauren’s Song.” A tender duet from the point of view of a six-year old and her father. They both stare at the same moon while singing about their very different preoccupations only to end with the shared line “I just want

to know from you that I’m all right”.

My wish is that everyone who listens to this album keeps an eye out for the moments they recognize from their own paths through life. In “Burton’s Song (Canoe Song),” there is a haunting and ineffable line about longing to hold on to beauty: ‘and if I could I’d keep these things for me.’

Selfishly I am glad Ted decided not to keep these songs for himself but to share them with a wider audience. Because in my opinion that song along with “The Best Day of My Life” belongs on everyone’s summer playlist.

Turn it up on the deck with the family, “have a jar” and let these songs be the soundtrack for your own personal moments gone too soon.

Celebrating 20 years

A POEM FOR THE FESTIVAL’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY JUDE NEALE Bowen Poet Laureate Bowfest at fifty, and still the children lead us in.

From BICS to the library, the parade spills colour down the road.

Wagons, costumes, dogs, drums, sunhats, strollers, bare knees.

Forty years ago, I brought Jer and Katie here, when they were small enough for wonder.

Thirty-five years ago, my students called my name wherever I went: Jude! Jude! as if a teacher could be a bell rung home.

Now other parents lift their children high above the crowd.

The island keeps handing childhood from arm to arm.

There are inflatables, games, Lego towers, zucchini glory, and the solemn athletic grandeur of the slug races.

Those silver citizens cross the grass at their own wise speed.

Pies wait on tables: apple, berry, rhubarb, lemon, each crust a family secret wearing sugar on its sleeve.

Boats are built with hope, rope, paint, and questionable physics.

Some float like prayers. Some sink like excellent jokes.

Hamburgers smoke. Hotdogs snap.

Mustard decorates everybody.

This year the bands will play, the families will gather, and Queen of Colour will sing for the young ones first.

Bowfest has always known the island’s true royalty: the kids sticky with candy, grass stains, music, and belonging.

The Museum holds the photographs, but we hold the heat: the laughter, the ferry whistle, the field, the names called out.

We come back hungry for each other, and there is always room.

Bowfest, beloved Bowen, this is how joy remembers us.
