This year’s Bowen Island Citizen of the Year is being posthumously awarded to Susan Clarke.

Clarke is well known on Bowen for her tireless efforts at the helm of the local Food Bank, overseeing the operation to help those in need for approximately 30 years. Clarke grew the Food Bank consistently but also guided it through difficult periods including the pandemic and recent grocery price inflation. Thanks to her efforts the resource has not only survived but thrived, and today offers more products and equipment than ever before.

Clarke came to Bowen Island 50 years ago in 1976, like so many current Islanders based on the recommendations of friends. Originally from Essex, England, she initially lived in Vancouver before settling in Mount Gardner with her family. She’d later move to what would become her beloved home neighbourhood for the rest of her life Snug Cove.

Off-Road Vehicles Prohibited on Crown Land due to Fire Risk All off-road vehicles (ORV) are currently prohibited on Crown Land, by order of the Coastal Fire Service.

Given the scope and scale of fires currently burning in B.C., and the elevated danger ratings in many southern regions of the province, this prohibition is being put into place to further protect public safety.

The prohibition includes: all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) motorcycles off-road side-by-side vehicles

Before inspecting the list, a person must sign a statement that they will not inspect the list, make copies, or use the information included in the list except for the purposes stated in the Local Government Act.

VIEWPOINTS Letter: In praise of the Med Shed’s trail trike JULIE SAXTON Letter Writer A wonderful underused resource.

Recently I tentatively enquired at the library about the availability of the ‘trail trike’ wheelchair from the Med Shed. I was hoping to borrow it for just one weekend day to take a friend out for a picnic.

I was staggered to learn that not only was this fantastic resource available at short notice, but also that it is rarely ever booked out for use. I wondered what I was getting myself into.

The process for booking it and picking it up was incredibly straightforward, involving an e-mail request for availability and a couple of waivers to be signed by the ‘rider’ and ‘driver’. The loan just went on my library card - no fee, no deposit. How amazing is that!

Once completed, we were able to pick it up and drop it off during the library’s extensive opening hours. Also, for anybody who read the original Undercurrent article when

this equipment was first purchased, the trail trike can currently be borrowed for up to three days instead of just a same day loan.

The trail trike itself turned out to be very user-friendly - robust and well-designed for tackling trails and uneven or unpaved ground, comfortable handlebars to be able to get behind a good push for the hills, and excellent brakes (ditto).

It provided easy going on the trails in Crippen Park and was smooth rolling on the road. The highly visible bright orange paint job was cheerful enough but above all helped encourage vehicles to give us a wide berth as we worked our way around one of the gnarlier trails.

This valuable resource can make a huge difference to people with limited mobility, enabling them to continue to participate in social activities and reducing isolation.

Many thanks to the library staff, and to Bowen Island Community Foundation for making this happen.

Susan Clarke dedicated a “life of service” to Bowen Island CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

Along the way, Clarke took charge of the Food Bank. From humble beginnings as a small shelf at the Bowen Island United Church (where it occupies much more space today), Susan religiously checked the supplies most mornings and nights to ensure that nobody went without.

“She was always adamant that there was food for everybody,” says her daughter Siobhan Catchlove. “Food was her love language.”

“Every Thanksgiving or Christmas I remember growing up, when dinner would be ready she would leave,” recalls Siobhan.

“She would go and drive around the island and deliver plates of food to people before she ever sat down.”

As much as she loved the world of food and the sense of community it could build, Clarke was involved in many more endeavours on Bowen which aren’t as commonly known. This includes working at the Orchard Recovery Centre, beginning as a support worker when the facility opened in 2002. Susan continued to do work with the Orchard throughout the rest of her life.

Clarke also had an artistic side, specifically in the realm of pottery. She operated from a kiln located at her house; Catchlove remembers her mother being covered in mud from head to toe. It was one of Susan’s loves, though she did admit it was “not a very glamorous job.” (Clarke also mentioned to her daughter that had she been a jeweller it would have been much easier to haul her wares around.)

Her passion developed into a business

and Clarke established the pottery shop ‘VONIGO’ (named for the Bowen postal code) soon after arriving. It was a true family affair, with Catchlove’s grandmother and brother also involved in operations.

The location changed a few times, but naturally it was always on the main strip of Snug Cove.

Susan was a dog lover as well, her home never full without several four-legged friends around. As was her nature, the dogs came to Susan through her efforts to help others.

“She always had a car full of dogs, most of them rescued from somewhere in the middle of the night,” says Siobhan. “They would be her lifelong friends.”

Island events were must-attends, with Susan’s favourite Bowen socials including Strawberry Tea, Bowfest, and Fall Supper at Thanksgiving, the latter of which she cooked turkeys for. (Siobhan points out all of these events include wonderful food.)

Clarke passed away in May this year.

Her daughter remarks that even later in life Susan could not help but remain active.

“She never stopped moving, let alone working… Even when she wasn’t well she was still making sure she was doing what she could,” says Siobhan.

She says her mother was proud to contribute, as she called it, “a life of service” to the Bowen community she called home and loved so much.

Susan Clarke follows in the footsteps of her mother, Joan Knight, who was also a Citizen of the Year recipient. Clarke will be recognized during this year’s Bowfest Parade on August 29.

Art in the Forest with the Knick Knack Nook JOHN LAWRENCE Knick Knack Nook The 40 or so volunteers at the Nook have been hard at work stacking shelves - and wherever space allows - to present a gorgeous display of wonderfully inexpensive options for island shoppers. It would be true to say that these days there is more than just a trickle of off-island visitors curious to discover more about the legendary Nook!

None of the above would be possible without the generous support of our community which continues to donate such a splendid mix of goods. Currently we are supporting a

number of island charitable organizations including $50,000 to university-bound young people; plus raising hard cash to replace our dying Quonset hut.

We will be hosting a sale of art (paintings, photographs, sculptures, ceramics, fiber arts, jewelry) in an evening of magic in the forest surrounding the Nook on Wednesday, August 19 from 5 to 8 pm.

It will feature a wide range of art pieces donated by our many art-savvy fellow citizens! Shoppers will be offered a glass of wine and a choice of cheeses to wet the appetite for the appreciation and purchase of beautiful pieces of art for the home or as a gift to a special friend.

Hearth Gallery welcomes new exhibit: ‘Looking Out, Looking In’ MADY BONIFACE The Hearth Gallery Looking Out, Looking In is the latest exhibition at The Hearth Gallery on Bowen Island. This show features portraits by artists Stuart Slind, Matt Vyner and Heather Wilkinson and explores what we observe about each other, on and below the surface. The exhibition will be up from August 19 to September 7, with the artist party on Saturday, August 22 from 6 to 8 pm.

Stuart Slind is a Bowen Island artist who specialises in portraits. Unlike many other portrait artists, Stuart often conjures the subject of his paintings from his imagination, sometimes combining the features of multiple different people to make up one face.

Stuart creates these pieces using oil paint and often references historic figures or features. Through this process, archetypes emerge, organising the chaos of humanity into the organized template of the face.

His work concerns itself with perspective, looking at both how we see each other and how we see ourselves through others and our art. Stuart invites you to pause and consider the brush strokes that make up these visages and remark on the time, energy and struggle that goes into each piece.

Matt Vyner is an emerging Bowen Island artist who creates energetic abstract pieces. Matt’s art work draws on pop art and comic books; it features bright colours, dynamic compositions and geometric shapes. His paintings take on an almost 3D element as he uses creases and multiple canvases to fracture and distort his paintings.

For this show, Matt ventures into the world of portraiture and creates remarkable faces that shift and morph depending on how you look at them. Each tiny change creates a big emotion.

Matt’s work operates as a form of augmented reality as features and expressions are exaggerated and exist simultaneously on one figure. He hopes that viewers are energized by his works and are reminded of the fun of creating art.

Heather Wilkinson is an artist who currently lives in Courtney on Vancouver Island. Heather began her painting

journey at the age of 63 and was inspired to create portraits after painting her great niece.

For Heather, painting is born out of a great love for her subject matter. She endeavors to connect to each face, landscape, flower and object she paints. She explores these various personalities through the mediums of water colour, acrylic and oil paint.

In this upcoming show, Heather’s portraits demonstrate the various people that she has encountered on her travels.

She invites the viewer to connect with the personality and presence of the people in each painting, especially their joy and humanity.

Come see these three artists as they tackle portraiture in their own distinct styles. What draws us to each other and how do we see ourselves in others? Look outward and inward in this exhibition at The Hearth.

Visit Gently - Moving through Bowen’s wild places BOWEN ISLAND CONSERVANCY Bowen’s wild places begin close to home on the trail around Killarney Lake, beneath the cedars of a neighbourhood park, along the established loop trail at the Wild Coast Nature Refuge, and on one of the many paths across the island.

Every trail passes through habitat where other lives are feeding, nesting, resting and growing, often near where we walk. These places can feel timeless, yet their health is shaped, in part, by how each of us moves through them.

That is the idea behind Visit Gently: six small practices that let us enjoy Bowen’s wild places while leaving room for the life around us. None asks very much. Followed by everyone, they become shared care.

They are a simple way for all of us to help keep Bowen’s forests, creeks, wetlands and shorelines healthy and rich with life. Our choices are small and familiar. Their value comes from making them wherever we walk, again and again.

Use established trails: Trails gather our footsteps in one place and leave the ground beside them room to grow. A single step off a path may seem inconsequential, but repeated footsteps widen trails, loosen thin soils and wear away mosses, ferns and the small plants that shelter insects and hold moisture. Shortcuts can quickly become new paths.

On wet days, staying on a trail rather than skirting its edges helps keep our shared footprint small. Established routes also show us where footsteps are welcome. At the Wild Coast Nature Refuge, for example, we may enjoy the loop trail and its viewpoints, while the sensitive cliffs should

not be walked on and the western Nature Sanctuary is closed. Respecting such closures gives habitat and wildlife uninterrupted time.

Leash dogs where they are welcome and honour dogfree places: Dogs may be beloved companions, but wildlife experiences them differently. A dog does not need to chase an animal to disturb it; its scent, sound or movement off trail can cause wildlife to stop feeding, hide, flee, or leave a resting place. Keeping dogs close and on the trail gives other lives more room.

Local rules vary - dogs must be leashed on Crippen Regional Park trails, with a designated off-leash area at Killarney Meadows, while dogs are not permitted anywhere in the Wild Coast Nature Refuge. Where dogs are not welcome, choosing a walk without them is a simple way to care for the place and all that lives there.

Take out what we bring in: Carry out litter, food scraps and dog waste, or place them in an appropriate bin. Even things that seem harmless or biodegradable can change a wild place. Food scraps attract animals to trails and can teach them to associate people with food.

Plastic, string and other litter can be swallowed or become tangled around wildlife. Dog waste can add bacteria and excess nutrients to soil and water, and a filled bag left beside the trail is still litter. What we carry out leaves the next visitor and the wild residents of the place a cleaner path.

Leave wild things where they belong: A flower, shell, stone or piece of driftwood may look like a small keepsake, but each is part of the place where we found it. Fallen wood shelters insects and slowly returns nutrients to the soil.

Empty shells may become homes for other creatures. Stones offer cover to small lives and help hold soil and shorelines in place.

Look closely, take a photograph, and leave natural treasures where they are. Along the shore, let small creatures remain in their pools and hiding places, and let wildlife find its own food. A photograph carries the memory home while leaving the place complete.

Watch wildlife from a distance: Watching wildlife can be one of the best parts of a walk. The gentlest way to do it is to pause rather than move closer. Binoculars or a camera zoom can bring the moment nearer without asking an animal to make room for us.

If an animal changes what it is doing because of our presence, we are too close. Stepping back lets it return to feeding, resting, travelling or caring for its young. Giving wildlife space turns an encounter into something quieter and more generous: a glimpse of another life continuing on its own terms.

Bring a quiet presence: Conversation is part of a good walk, but wildlife responds to sound as well as distance. Loud or sudden noise can interrupt feeding, mask the calls animals use to communicate or send them into hiding.

Lower voices and quiet devices leave more room for the sounds and lives around us. They also give us a better chance to hear birdsong, moving water, wind in the trees and the soft rustle of something just beyond the trail.

The regular season standings may not have looked like they did last year, but at the end of the annual Fastpitch Tournament this past Sunday the result was the same: the Firemen once again celebrating on top of the Bowen baseball world.

The boys in red left no doubt about their repeat performance as they swept through the weekend’s gauntlet of games winning five matches out of five. The schedule had done them no favours – the Firemen were forced to play all three of their group stage games on Saturday spanning from a 9 am opening to a 6 pm start for their third tilt. But each and every game they were ready, and when the dust had settled on the hotly anticipated evening game against the Diggers (who the Firemen defeated for the title last year) the hot squad were 3-0 and assured a spot in the semifinals.

As fate would have it, yet another rematch with the Diggers was in store for that Sunday afternoon. Between them

these two teams had won the past 7 championships (often against each other) and it was assured one of them would contest the final once again.

This time the Diggers looked poised to finish them off on multiple occasions, particularly after an Aaron Johnstone triple to clear the bases took place in the top of the 7th.

Down by 3 in the home half, the Firemen methodically worked their way onto the basepaths to set up a storybook showdown between slugger Ewan McEachern and pitcher of the year Adam Woodward.

This chapter of the rivalry finished with the ball sailing over the centrefield fence for an electric 3-run walkoff home run.

There was less drama in the final against the host Brewers (who had a remarkable string of games of their own, all while running a memorable ‘Bowchella’ fan zone each and every day and night of the tournament) – the Firemen established a 7-0 lead and never let the Brewers get too close before the game ended 7-3. A flurry of red quickly engulfed the field as the team poured out to celebrate the hard earned and very rare feat.

Reflecting with songs of the Beatles REV. LORRAINE ASHDOWN Bowen Island United Church I wonder if the music of The Beatles features in the soundtrack of your life? I suspect the answer is yes for many of us. So, this Sunday at Bowen Island United Church we have invited our friend Peter Clarke, local musician extraordinaire to come and join us in an all Beatles gathering.

We will take a break from the traditional format of Sunday Mornings at BIUC and dive into the gifts of the Fab Four.

We will sing together, share our thoughts about the meaning and significance of the tunes we sing, and feel very blessed by the gifts of Peter and his own awesome love for The Beatles. I asked Peter for his bio and this is what he said, “I made a living doing what I love: playing music. We should all be so lucky.”

So come and feel that joy of singing together. There is no charge and the only ask from the church is that you make a donation if you are able. We are fortunate to have a grant from the ProVision Fund of the Pacific Mountain Region and are able hire local musicians.

We are grateful to be able to offer Peter some funds.

Life has been quite heavy for some recently with the wildfires being so present in people’s minds and hearts along with other national and global strains. Perhaps gathering to sing is a good remedy for the angst we are holding. There will be short reflections between songs, some silences, some prayers and we shall see what The Spirit leads us to.

On Sunday, August 30 we will repeat this idea with Chris Corrigan and myself leading and sharing the music of the much beloved Bruce Cockburn.

Film Society looks at life vs. art in The Red Shoes MICHAEL NANKIN Bowen Island Film Society Is the artistic life worth the sacrifice it demands? A life dedicated to art exacts a toll in missed moments, missed relationships, missed milestones, missed everything.

The mastery of an art demands complete dedication. Even when you’re not working, you’re working.

Art is selfish and requires a blindness to everything outside it.

The Red Shoes wrestles with these issues in its story and also in its technical and artistic excellence. The characters in the film must make these hard choices but, as you marvel at the high-level technicolor art of the film, you find yourself wondering what the filmmakers had to deny themselves and their families to achieve what many call the best dance film ever made.

The writing/producing/direct-

ing team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (known as The Archers) made films that explored sacrifice and compassion. In The Red Shoes, they conclude that the choice is impossible and very likely destructive.

Those of us who struggle with work versus family, virtual versus actual, and the relentlessness of the calendar can feel the weight of the choices their characters are forced to make.

The film will be shown with Fast and Furry-ous, the very first of the Road Runner/Coyote cartoons, itself a display of mastery and its own kind of dance.

The Bowen Island Film Society presents The Red Shoes at the Community Centre’s Bowen Theatre in association with Bowen Recreation (find ticket details on their website) and the Bowen Island Municipality on Friday, August 14 at 6:30 pm.

It’s the first back to back for any team since the Diggers in 2018/19, and first for the Firemen since 2006/07. We talked to team member Adam Franklin about the past weekend, as well as the year that was as the league celebrates 40 years since its inception.

Q: Back to back titles hasn’t been accomplished by a team since 2018/19. What do you think makes it so hard and what does it say about this team that they accomplished it?

A: Winning Ball Tourney is a grind and requires great pitching, solid defence, and timely hitting. Getting all of these over 5 games during the weekend is never easy and makes winning the championship very difficult to accomplish year in and year out. We had the right combination of pitching, hitting, and defence to help us through all 5 wins and ultimately hoist the championship trophy.

Q: We are used to classic finals between Firemen and Diggers, this year we got 2 matchups between the two teams including an unforgettable semifinal ending in a walk off. What are your reflections on those 2 Diggers duels.

A: The Firemen and Diggers have a great rivalry and every game we play always brings about something special. That semifinal was one of the best games I have ever been part of in this league and a game that will remembered for a long time to come.

The game was back and forth all game with multiple lead changes capped off by a walk off 3-run home run. It feels like something scripted in a movie and was about as good of a game as you could ask for!

Q: It was not the regular season we’re used to for the Firemen and many people were surprised to see the team under .500.

Was there any concern among the team about the record?

A: We were a bit disappointed by our regular season record, however, we lost a lot of close games and knew our record did

not necessarily reflect how well we played.

We had full confidence in our ability come Ball Tourney weekend and knew we had a chance to beat anybody over the weekend.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about the MVP performance of Ewan McEachern during the tourney, and what he brings to the team?

A: Ewan put on a performance for the ages. Not only did he hit 6 home runs, he was our best defensive player as well. When I am playing in the infield, it is very reassuring you can basically throw the ball anywhere near 1st base and Ewan will catch it.

I also cannot imagine having to face Ewan as a pitcher multiple times per game. I have been playing baseball with Ewan since I was 5 years old and am always glad he is on my team.

Q: 4 of the past 6 championships have now gone to the Firemen which is an incredible accomplishment, how does this team always find that winning gear come tournament weekend?

A: I think it boils down to how much fun we have as a team and overall vibes on the bench. Winning or losing, we always keep positive vibes on the bench and know we are able to win any game we play. This most recent Ball Tourney was a great example as 4 of the 5 wins we had were comeback wins.

This is attributed to keeping good vibes on the bench, remaining loose, and knowing that we are there to pick each other up. It is a great group of guys and makes showing up to the ball field fun every game!

Q: What other individual Firemen performances and/or plays/games stood out from the weekend?

A: There were a lot of notable plays and players and, besides the already noted performance by Ewan, there were 2 big home runs from Kevin Harding and Aidan Holland that stood out. Kevin hit a 2 run bomb against the Diggers in our final round robin game that helped secure 1st place in the round robin. Aidan hit a 3 run shot against the Brewers in the finals that put us up 5-0 and ended up being a big part of our 7-3 win!
