revisie waterveiligheid, noodzaak van experiment Ruim tweeduizend jaar probeert de ‘Hollandse Landleeuw’ de ‘Waterwolf’ zijn wil op te leggen: het tijdperk waarin mensen domineren over natuur. Er is een complete ommekeer gaande, niet langer zijn harde keringen en het vastleggen van natuurlijke processen de oplossing. In het nieuwe tijdperk zet de mens landschappelijke processen slim naar zijn hand: ‘Building with Nature’. De ‘Hollandse Landleeuw’ gaat een samenwerking aan met de ‘Waterwolf’. Voor het nieuwe tijdperk is kennis van ‘building with nature’ vereist. Om onze delta leefbaar te houden en om de traditie van waterinnovatie verder te ontwikkelen.

IJsselmeer, flexibel peil Het kunstmatige meer komt zwaarder onder druk te staan, risico’s nemen toe door grilligheid in het klimaat; zeespiegelstijging en rivierextremen. Om doorstroming en buffercapaciteit te garanderen introduceert de overheid een flexibel peil op het IJsselmeer: een bandbreedte die op termijn wordt uitgebreid tot mogelijk een halve meter. Dit creëert opgaven: het stelt nieuwe eisen aan waterveiligheid en heeft impact op het oeversysteem.

In mijn voorstel worden ‘Building with Nature’ methodes ingezet om de opgaven (water, economie, ecologie), die intensiveren door het flexibel peil, omgezet naar een integrale gebiedsontwikkeling.

Het flexibel peil als ‘verzoening tussen het gereguleerd- en het natuurlijk watersysteem.’ Met het IJsselmeer als rolmodel voor het ‘nieuwe waterveiligheid-tijdperk’ OEVERLAB - Noordoostpolder - Friese IJsselmeerkust De rijke diversiteit in kusttypologie aan het IJsselmeer biedt een uitgelezen kans voor ‘building with nature’ experiment: het OEVERLAB IJsselmeer. Voor twee locaties met verschillende condities, opgaven en ‘building with nature’ potentie is het landschapsontwerp gemaakt.

Noordoostpolder: het ‘achterdijks teeltmoeras’, ‘drijvende elementen’ en ‘living reefs’ vormen samen een nieuw fenomeen aan de rand van de polder. Inspelend op kwelproblematiek, de diepe wateren en de identiteit van landbouw en visserij. Het productielandschap wordt gecombineerd met nieuwe natuurwaarden en waterveiligheid.

Friese IJsselmeerkust: ‘boomriffen’, ‘kraggendammen’ en de ‘moeraspolder’ sluiten aan op de kust eigenschappen als sedimenttransport en oevervegetatie. Ze vergroten het areaal en robuustheid van de natuurlijke waterkering, een spectaculair ecologisch landschap waar recreatie samengaat met waterveiligheid. zelfredzaam park Hét nieuwe icoon in de Nederlandse delta, een samenwerking tussen ondernemers, overheden, natuurorganisaties, kennisinstituten en waterbeheerders maken samen het OEVERLAB IJsselmeer.

De aaneenschakeling van deelprojecten creëren een waterkerend parklaboratorium. De rand van land en water; voorheen de scheidende dijk, transformeert tot het koppelstuk tussen water en achterland. In tegenstelling tot de afschrijfposten: dijk en gemaal, zorgen de ‘building with nature’ experimenten voor nieuwe economische verdienmodellen. Een lange termijn investering, met als resultaat veiligheid, ecologische vooruitgang en welvaart.

Architect, Master of Science Urbanist, Master of Science Landscape Architect, Master of Science Architects, urbanists and landscape architects learn the profession at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture through an intensive combination of work and study. They work in small, partly interdisciplinary groups and are supervised by a select group of practising fellow professionals.

There is a wide range of options within the programme so that students can put together their own trajectory and specialisation.

With the inclusion of the course in Urbanism in 1957 and Landscape Architecture in 1972, the Academy is the only architecture school in the Netherlands to bring together the three spatial design disciplines under one roof.

Some 350 guest tutors are involved in teaching every year. Each of them is a practising designer or a specific expert in his or her particular subject. The three heads of department also have design practices of their own in addition to their work for the Academy. This structure yields an enormous dynamism and energy and ensures that the courses remain closely linked to the current state of the discipline.

The courses consist of projects, exercises and lectures. First-year and second-year students also engage in morphological studies. Students work on their own or in small groups. The design

projects form the backbone of the syllabus.

On the basis of a specific design assignment, students develop knowledge, insight and skills.

The exercises are focused on training in those skills that are essential for recognising and solving design problems, such as analytical techniques, knowledge of the repertoire, the use of materials, text analysis, and writing. Many of the exercises are linked to the design projects.

The morphological studies concentrate on the making of spatial objects, with the emphasis on creative process and implementation. Students experiment with materials and media forms and gain experience in converting an idea into a creation.

During the periods between the terms there are workshops, study trips in the Netherlands and abroad, and other activities. This is also the preferred moment for international exchange projects. The Academy regularly invites foreign students for the workshops and recruits wellknown designers from the Netherlands and further afield as tutors.

Graduates from the Academy of Architecture are entitled to the following titles: Architect, Master of Science; Urbanist, Master of Science and Landscape Architect, Master of Science.
