OPGAVE Marken is een prachtig (schier)eiland waar de tijd lijkt stil te staan. De monumentale werfen (terpen), die vroeger de Markers beschermde tegen jaarlijkse overstromingen, worden nu overspoelt door toeristen. De balans tussen het gewone dagelijkse leven op Marken en toerisme is zoek. De spreiding van bezoekers in zowel tijd als ruimte is minimaal en tegelijkertijd is er een tekort aan gezinswoningen om behoud van functies op het eiland te waarborgen. Planologisch zit Marken op slot en dit beperkt ruimtelijke vernieuwing en innovatie.

Rondom het schiereiland Marken ligt een overloopdijk, een primaire waterkering. Rijkswaterstaat heeft als eigenaar van de dijk geconstateerd dat de west- en zuidkade niet meer voldoen aan de gewenste veiligheidsnormen en moeten worden versterkt. Er is sprake van hoogtetekort, macro-instabiliteit en/of onvoldoende dijkbekleding. Ten opzichte van de rest van het eiland, wordt de omringdijk van Marken minder gehinderd door de ruimtelijke regelgeving, want veiligheid staat voorop. Daarmee is deze dijk, in meerdere opzichten, het ultieme element dat De Beweging start naar een robuuster en toekomstbestendig Marken op gebied van wonen, recreatie en natuurontwikkeling.

DE DIJK BEWEGING De omringdijk van Marken bestaat uit drie typerende zijden voor het eiland. Elke zijde vertelt zowel ruimtelijk als functioneel een uniek verhaal over Marken. Er is voor gekozen dit te behouden en de identiteit van elke zijde te benadrukken en door plekspecifieke dijkversterkingen uit te voeren.

De westkade is nu een lage hoekige dijk. De dijk hoeft nauwelijks verder te worden opgehoogd, maar wel moet deze zijde worden beschermd tegen golfoploop. Daarnaast is het jammer dat het bijzondere dorpssilhouet nauwelijks zichtbaar vanaf de dijk. Het voorstel is daarom de westelijke dijk te ontzien van versterking maar in te zetten op de aanleg van luwtedammen. Hierdoor wordt de dijk tegen golfoploop beschermd. De luwtedammen benadrukken hoekige identiteit van de dijk en gelijktijdig vormen ze nieuwe routes en zichtlijnen richting het dorpssilhouet. Ook zorgen ze voor zichtbaarheid en bescherming van het voorland, dat hier buitendijks nog aanwezig is. Verder dragen ze bij aan verdere diversiteit van natuurontwikkeling in de Gouwzee. De luwtedammen bieden ruimte voor een nieuwe vorm van toerisme, die vooral in de winterperiode wordt gestimuleerd. Hierdoor worden mensen niet alleen ruimtelijk maar ook in tijd uitgenodigd zich over het eiland te verspreiden.

De zuidkade zal nog meer haar kronkelige dijkkarakter inzetten om de werfen als iconen in het open weidse landschap te benadrukken. De kronkelige dijk wordt behouden door heel zorgvuldig op te hogen en binnenwaarts of buitenwaarts te versterken.

Door het realiseren van een aanlegsteiger voor grotere cruiseschepen aan de zuidzijde van het eiland, wordt Marken beter verbonden met Amsterdam en toenemende toerisme richting de Markerwadden. Er ontstaat een transferium waarbij meerdere combinaties van (openbaar) vervoer en routes over het eiland mogelijk zijn. Ook het gebruik van de dijk, als route rond het eiland, wordt hiermee beter gereguleerd.

De versterking van noordkade kan bijdragen in de start van toekomstbestendige wonen passend binnen het beschermd dorpsgezicht. Zodat bezoekers kunnen zien dat Markers nog steeds leven, rekening houdend met het water. Op deze manier kunnen de drie dijkzijden op eigen kracht maar vooral ook door hun samenspel, Marken laten bewegen naar de toekomst.

The dike of Marken is like a theatre: every distortion on the dike gives another perspective on the island and surrounding. Amound of distortions of the dike: 44 on the south, 22 on the west and 15 on the north. The nicest views are marked orange.

A transferium on the south side of Marken opens up possibilites to new marketing and routes towards and on the island. Possibilites to stay give more profit for Marken itself.

Places along the dike get the chance to develop into amazing places, to look back and see historical houses and forward to see innovative living with water, all because of dikes.

Architect, Master of Science Urbanist, Master of Science Landscape Architect, Master of Science Architects, urbanists and landscape architects learn the profession at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture through an intensive combination of work and study. They work in small, partly interdisciplinary groups and are supervised by a select group of practising fellow professionals.

There is a wide range of options within the programme so that students can put together their own trajectory and specialisation.

With the inclusion of the course in Urbanism in 1957 and Landscape Architecture in 1972, the Academy is the only architecture school in the Netherlands to bring together the three spatial design disciplines under one roof.

Some 350 guest tutors are involved in teaching every year. Each of them is a practising designer or a specific expert in his or her particular subject. The three heads of department also have design practices of their own in addition to their work for the Academy. This structure yields an enormous dynamism and energy and ensures that the courses remain closely linked to the current state of the discipline.

The courses consist of projects, exercises and lectures. First-year and second-year students also engage in morphological studies. Students work on their own or in small groups. The design

projects form the backbone of the syllabus.

On the basis of a specific design assignment, students develop knowledge, insight and skills.

The exercises are focused on training in those skills that are essential for recognising and solving design problems, such as analytical techniques, knowledge of the repertoire, the use of materials, text analysis, and writing. Many of the exercises are linked to the design projects.

The morphological studies concentrate on the making of spatial objects, with the emphasis on creative process and implementation. Students experiment with materials and media forms and gain experience in converting an idea into a creation.

During the periods between the terms there are workshops, study trips in the Netherlands and abroad, and other activities. This is also the preferred moment for international exchange projects. The Academy regularly invites foreign students for the workshops and recruits wellknown designers from the Netherlands and further afield as tutors.

Graduates from the Academy of Architecture are entitled to the following titles: Architect, Master of Science; Urbanist, Master of Science and Landscape Architect, Master of Science.
