DISCOVER

HERE’S THE THING

ABOUT LIVING AND LEARNING AT BU

We brought three lecturers together with third year student Paul to chat all things BU. Read on or scan the QR code for a full 360° insight into student life and study.

Dr Lucy Sheppard-Marks

Dr Festus Adedoyin Faculty of Media, Science & Technology

What does it really mean to grow at university?

Beyond lectures and the deadlines, the student experience is shaped by friendships, confidence, place and a sense of belonging.

We sat down with members of our university community to reflect on how our students grow from the moment they arrive to the day they graduate, and the full 360 degree experience in between.

Paul Prasse Current third-year student
Dr Susan Dewhurst
Faculty of Health, Environment & Medical Sciences

How do you see students evolve across their time at Bournemouth University?

SUSAN

My favourite thing is seeing the students who come in and haven’t quite found where they fit in yet, but by the time they leave, they’ve got so many different groups of friends – in the classroom, sports teams, clubs and housemates. I really love seeing that social journey.

LUCY

I

REALLY LOVE SEEING THE SOCIAL JOURNEY

PAUL

Absolutely – seeing that confidence build and their ability to work with different types of people, encounter different situations and

the resilience they build – they really do leave completely transformed.

FESTUS

And in lectures as well, after a while that confidence to work independently beyond assignments and solve problems grows, which is so great to see.

I’ve been here almost three years now and I definitely feel like I’ve become more confident – I’ve built a larger social network and through my part-time role as a student ambassador I met two of my closest friends, which in turn has helped me achieve academically because I’m able to feel confident and secure.

So once students start to settle in here, they’re able to explore different sides of themselves. Beyond the walls of the university, what’s on offer for them to explore?

LUCY

Oh there’s so much opportunity – volunteer activities, Bournemouth 7s which is a big sporting festival that often becomes the pinnacle of the year for a lot of final year students.

PAUL

We’re really lucky to have AFC Bournemouth – a global Premier League football club – on our doorstep. I was part of their Diversity in the Workplace panel, and as part of that I got a stadium tour and tickets to see one of their Premier League matches, which was great!

WE’RE REALLY LUCKY TO HAVE A GLOBAL PREMIER LEAGUE CLUB ON OUR DOORSTEP

Did you know?

Bournemouth University is the official higher education partner of AFC Bournemouth and principal partner of the girls’ and women’s teams. Now in its 14th year, the partnership exists for the benefit of students, staff, supporters and the local community, with a range of activities taking place each year.

Did you know?

With miles of golden sand, our famous beach has been ranked the 12th best beach in the world by the Trip Advisor community.

25th Anniversary Travellers Choice Awards (2025).

THE BEACH IS AWESOME, IT REALLY COMES TO LIFE IN THE SUMMER

SUSAN

We’re also really lucky to have really great nightlife down here in Bournemouth, but the real thing we have is the natural environment around us. The beach is awesome – it comes to life in the summer – barbecues, bars – it’s just really, really vibrant and such a good, fun place to be.

And for those who might like things a little quieter, we’ve also got the New Forest right on our doorstep – the wild ponies, the donkeys, pigs…and getting out on bikes there is pretty special.

Many of our courses also make the most of having the Jurassic Coast on our doorstep, going out to study the environment we have here.

FESTUS

There’s also Poole Quay and the natural harbour, and we’ve also got the Tank Museum and Ministry of Defence in Corsham with all sorts of Battle Labs which host hackathons, competitions and projects, so there are lots of opportunities for students to learn outside of the classroom.

Belonging is a huge part of the student experience as well – what does that look like at BU?

FESTUS

At Bournemouth University we’re really invested in our student wellbeing. And that starts right from the top at programme leadership level. As a programme leader, I’m really invested in the wellbeing of my students, not just about the academic side of things, but also their overall wellbeing.

LUCY

I think importantly there’s the authentic care that lecturers really do have for the students that we have the privilege of working with.

It matters a huge amount to us how well our students do and what they go on to achieve –we keep in touch with our students because, as Festus says, we’re really invested in their entire journey. So much about belonging is about feeling, seeing, feeling valued and we have so many networks that really do support and value our students.

Students often say that the learning experience becomes more meaningful when different parts of their life connect – is that something you’ve experienced?

PAUL

One of my favourite things is the guest lecturers we get to hear from – we have local connections with big companies like JP Morgan and Lush, and it’s great to learn from industry leaders and graduates to understand how they started their careers.

FESTUS

The relationship we have with JP Morgan opens up so many opportunities for placements and projects, and locally there are so many organisations that we collaborate with on student projects. Clearwater Dynamics, for example – it’s really important for the overall student experience.

That opportunity to do placements in businesses is huge – how is that woven into the student experience?

SUSAN

All of our programmes in healthcare are co-designed with health and social care providers. Some courses have mandatory placements and for others it’s optional, but either way it’s such a brilliant opportunity for our students to take their learning and bring it to life in industry. It’s so varied as well – students travel all over the world with their placements, and we see such a difference in our students when they come back – they’re complete professionals. I rave about our final year students all the time – they’re not finished articles, but they are true professionals and they approach their learning in a very different way as well.

GRADUATION DAY FOR STUDENTS IS ONE OF THE PROUDEST DAYS OF THEIR LIFE.

And to round up, what are the most rewarding changes you see in students across their time with us at BU?

FESTUS

It’s really interesting to see our students who go on to do big things, and then come back to uni. One of our former students came back as a guest lecturer on a unit I teach, and it was great for current students to see what the future could look like – to talk about jobs roles, work-life balance and things like that.

SUSAN

I love it when I hear from a student, and see that they’ve got the job they’ve really been pushing for, and it’s really related to their course. It’s great to see that everything they’ve put in has come together to get them their dream job.

PAUL

As a student I always love sitting in on graduation because it’s nice to see some of my friends walking across that stage, and I can see how far they’ve come – that really inspires me to go on and to someday walk across the stage myself.

LUCY

Graduation day for students is one of the proudest days of their life. But also for us as academics, it’s the best day of the year.

We get to see our students that we’ve worked so closely with, cross the stage and graduate. At last year’s graduation I spoke to a parent of a student I’d supported throughout their journey, and it’s such a special thing to have that moment of pause and connection, seeing that you’ve made a difference in somebody’s life. It’s amazing – it’s what we do it for.

PLACEMENTS

Professional work placements are a great way to enhance your CV, build valuable skills, expand your professional network and strengthen your career prospects. Every undergraduate student has the opportunity to undertake a placement and some courses include mandatory placements. Placement duration varies depending on your course, from short options to full year placements (a minimum of 30 weeks) usually completed after your second year. You can find specific details on each course page of our website. Competition for placements can be high, so you’ll need to demonstrate initiative and commitment when researching and applying. Throughout the process, our CareersBU team will be on hand to offer guidance and support.

FOUNDATION YEARS EXPLAINED

Foundation Years are an alternative route to prepare you for studying a full degree, involving an initial year of study that will enable you to progress on to the first year of one of our eligible undergraduate degrees. A Foundation Year is not the same as a Foundation degree. A Foundation Year gives you access onto a degree course, whereas a Foundation degree is a standalone qualification equivalent to the first two years of a degree. To see which courses offer a Foundation Year, refer to the course listings on pages 50–69.

Who is a Foundation Year for?

A Foundation Year could be right for you if:

— You don’t have the right qualifications for a full degree in your chosen subject

— You have the qualifications but don’t feel ready for degree-level study yet

— You are returning to study and feel you need some help to get up to speed with the demands of learning before starting an undergraduate degree.

Making sure you are ready

Our Foundation Years are not an extra year studying your chosen degree subject; rather a study option for you to gain a strong foundation of knowledge in certain disciplines. We are already running Foundation Years that will give you a grounding in science, business & management, creative industries, design, media & communication, engineering and technology.

Next steps

Successful completion of your Foundation Year will give you a guaranteed place on the degree for which you originally applied. However, each of our Foundation Years prepare you for the full degree course. bournemouth.ac.uk/foundation-years

FOUNDATION AND TOP-UP DEGREES

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for education. Everyone is different, so we offer a range of different solutions. In particular, we offer Foundation and Top-up degrees as alternative qualifications, both at BU and through our partners.

What is a Foundation degree?

A traditional Honours degree consists of three levels – Level 4 (Certificate), Level 5 (Intermediate) and Level 6 (Honours). A Foundation degree is just the first two of these, levels 4 and 5. On successful completion of your two years, you may want to go on to complete Level 6 by enrolling on a Top-up degree, either at BU or elsewhere.

What is a Top-up degree?

A Top-up degree is usually a one-year course that allows you to complete the final year of study you need to convert your Foundation degree (or equivalent qualification, such as an HND) into a full Honours degree. You don’t need to have studied your Foundation degree with us in order to apply for one of our Top-up degrees.

Practical learning

Both Foundation and Top-up degrees tend to have a practical focus, ensuring that you’re prepared for the workplace when you complete your course. If you study at BU, you’ll have access to all of our outstanding facilities, from the gym at SportBU and our extensive library to subjectspecific facilities, such as our clinical skills rooms and our food management studios.

We work closely with a number of local partners to give you the opportunity to study a Foundation degree. These are available in a range of fields and provide the perfect gateway to higher education if you’re not convinced university is for you.

Top-up degrees offered at BU

— Accounting & Finance: BA (Hons) International Finance

— Business & Management: BA (Hons) Business & Management

— Design & Engineering: BEng/MEng (Hons) Engineering (part-time)

— Tourism & Hospitality: BA (Hons) International Hospitality & Tourism Management

You can study BU Foundation degrees in the following subjects through our partner Bournemouth & Poole College

— FdEng Engineering: Marine Technologies

APPRENTICESHIPS AT BU

Apprenticeships allow you to earn qualifications while you work. They are a fantastic cost-effective way to develop your occupational knowledge, skills and behaviours – and best of all, you can do all that while earning a wage.

An apprenticeship is a job with training, so all apprentices earn a salary which is at least the national minimum apprenticeship wage, although most employers pay more. The apprenticeship costs are paid by your employer through the Apprenticeship Levy without the need for any student loans.

You will learn on the job, through academic study and by practising new skills in the workplace. Degree apprenticeships usually take between three and five years to complete.

How to apply

If you are currently working and are hoping to undertake an apprenticeship through your employer, you need to make sure that your employer is willing to support you in a relevant job role and all aspects of your apprenticeship.

Or you can search online through various apprenticeship job websites for new opportunities, for example UCAS, Apprenticeships UK or the NHS. For all of our apprenticeships you’ll also need to meet the BU entry requirements –you can find out more on our website.

For nursing apprenticeships you will apply directly to the NHS Trust to be employed via the Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship (RNDA).

For our Health and Social Work apprenticeships you will typically have an interview with the employer and BU staff.

We currently offer degree-level apprenticeships at three different levels.

— Level 5 - equivalent to a Foundation degree

— Level 6 - equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree

— Level 7 - equivalent to a Master’s degree

We offer apprenticeships in the following areas:

Our supportive learning environment is particularly evident in the services we provide through our Additional Learning Support (ALS) team. This support is available to all our students, whether full or part-time, undergraduate or postgraduate, on or off campus.

We can support you with:

— Specific learning differences

— Neurodivergent conditions

— Physical conditions

— Medical conditions

— Mental health issues

— Temporary injuries.

If you have a condition which is likely to affect your personal learning over time, speak to us. If you think you have a learning difficulty that has not been identified yet, get in touch with us and we can guide you through the process to find out.

It is important that you contact the Additional Learning Support (ALS) team as soon as possible if you think you will need additional support, because reasonable adjustments and one-to-one support are tailored to meet individual needs. The kind of support you are entitled to will vary considerably depending on many factors.

Among the support we can offer is:

— Information, advice and guidance for disability-related concerns

— Advising the faculties on reasonable adjustments that should be arranged so that disabled students are not disadvantaged — Exam access arrangements

— Supporting with arranging screenings and Educational Psychology Assessments for dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD

— Enabling students to learn specific skills and strategies that will enhance academic study

— Helping students develop employability skills needed during placements and beyond graduation

— Assisting with applications for Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA)

— Providing support to enable independent learning through one-to-ones sessions (DSA).

BU prides itself on helping everyone reach their full potential no matter what, and even if you need a little more support, there’s nothing to be ashamed of. In fact a lot of people make use of the Additional Learning Support at BU. If you have impairments, specific learning differences or temporary injuries (and more) and you think it could affect your personal learning, talk to the ALS team right away.

WAYS TO FUND YOUR STUDIES

When you’ve got the right financial support in place, you can concentrate on the stuff that really matters –settling in, excelling at your studies, and enjoying your time at BU.

Scholarships, bursaries and discounts

We offer a range of financial support that you don’t need to repay. We offer bursaries depending on your household income, or if you are joining university after leaving care or are estranged from your parents. If you have sporting or musical achievements, we also have scholarships that you might be eligible for, as well as dedicated scholarships for international students. To learn more, visit www.bournemouth.ac.uk/funding

NHS funding

Non-repayable funding of at least £5,000* per year is available for home students on eligible nursing, midwifery and some allied health courses. Search ‘nhs bursary’ for full details.

Social work bursaries may be available for those eligible on undergraduate or postgraduate social work courses. Search ‘social work bursary’ for details.

What about living expenses?

If you are a UK undergraduate student, you can borrow money towards your living expenses during your time at BU through a Maintenance Loan. How much you can borrow will depend on your household income, and you can even borrow a smaller amount if you live at home while studying.

A postgraduate loan is also available for eligible UK students. To check full eligibility please visit gov.uk/funding-for-postgraduate-study

How do you repay your loans?

For undergraduate students: your Tuition Fee Loan is combined with your Maintenance Loan, and your repayments are collected automatically through the tax system. However, you don’t need to start making any repayments until you are earning over £25,000 a year. Once you start earning that much, you’ll pay back 9% of any more money you earn. You’ll find more information at gov.uk/student-finance.

For postgraduate students: your postgraduate loan repayments will start when you earn over £21,000 and you will pay back 6% of any more money you earn. Repayments are made concurrently with any other student loan repayments.

If you’re an international student

We offer a range of scholarships for international students, from recognising academic achievement to sport and music talents. Our scholarships are reviewed every year. Please visit our website for the latest information.

Your fees

We publish our fees on each course page of our website, along with a list of what’s included. Our fees will vary depending on your status (home or international) and your level of study – Honours, Foundation, undergraduate or postgraduate. For details of loans and eligibility criteria, please visit our website.

We know every penny counts when you’re studying, so it’s a win that Bournemouth ranked in the top 10 most affordable places to study in the NatWest Student Living Index 2025.
