LEWIS
F U L L -T H R O T T L E
Randy Lewis spent a 23-year career pushing personal and mechanical limits as a race car driver, beginning as a Formula 3 driver in Europe. That’s where he fell in love with fine wine. He founded Lewis Cellars in 1992, and today he and his winemaker Josh Widaman, formerly of Pahlmeyer, are making the best wines in the history of the estate. In short, these are some of the most popular Napa Valley wines Bounty Hunter offers. They’re unrestrained, voluptuous wines that consistently score in the mid-to-high 90s. The feedback we get from you is enthusiastic across the board.
’16 Chardonnay • Napa Valley With a gorgeous pale gold color, and outsized, apply, creamy and lush aromas, this is sweet and low in acid on the palate with hints of orange marmalade and vanilla persisting through the luxurious finish. You’ll immediately see why this is one of Wine Spectator’s highest-rated Napa Chardonnays, year in and year out. Brilliant stuff!
1WLEW16CH3 | $49.95 btl.
’15 Cabernet Sauvignon • Napa Valley A fitting follow-up to the spectacular 2013 and 2014, this is massive, chocolaty Napa Valley Cabernet at its finest. Look for deep black cherry liqueur, mocha, Mexican chocolate, and toasted herbs, all arrayed around a full-bodied, luscious core. The tannins here are ripe and fine, ensuring a long life in the cellar. Bravo team Lewis!
1WLEW15CS3 | $99.95 btl.
’14 Cuvee L 3-pack • Napa Valley “Cuvee L,” quite simply, is the best of the best at Lewis, comprised of 12 of the finest barrels in the cellar. Our special relationship with this winery gets us access. Our notes say “Meaty. Fathomless. Extremely concentrated black cherry flavors. Scorched earth. Graphite. LA BOMBA.” Snatch up this collectors’ three-pack, in original wood, while this lasts!

MACAULEY
F A M I LY O F W I N E M A K I N G
Even among all the glamor and excess that define modern day Napa Valley, family and relationships still matter. When Mac Watson was dragging hoses as an assistant winemaker at Rudd Estate in Oakville, he had something of an epiphany. Having been born and raised in St. Helena, he was well-versed in the wine business. In fact, back in the early ‘80s, his mother had started the Macauley label with a highly regarded late harvest Sauvignon Blanc. But realizing early on that the sales and marketing elements of the business were a huge mountain to climb, the label essentially vanished. With a little help from his friends, Mac successfully resuscitated the brand. Enlisting growing partners like farming legends David Abreu and Andy Beckstoffer, and calling on his childhood buddy Kirk Venge, Macauley has roared back to life as a top-tier Cabernet producer. These are unforgettable reds!
’15 “Old Vine” Zinfandel • Napa Valley Sometimes we think Kirk Venge’s wines should require some sort of permit, or come with an extra warning label, there is so much pleasure packed in every milliliter. He couldn’t make a subtle wine if he tried! This gorgeous Zin opens with deep, intense fruit aromas of raspberry confiture, strawberry pulp, and more high-toned berry aromas than we can describe. It’s a juicy, mouth-filling wine that’s an absolute joy to drink.
1WMAC15ZN3OLDVINE | $44.95 btl.
’14 Cabernet Sauvignon • Napa Valley Sourced from top-tier vineyards across the Napa Valley, this is a massively-scaled bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon with charisma to spare. Parker called it “Dense, dark purple, with plenty of crème de cassis fruit, blackberry and touches of licorice and incense, it is full-bodied, lush, and ideal for drinking over 10-15 years.” Only hedonists need apply for this one!
1WMAC14CS3 | $79.95 btl.
’14 “Beckstoffer To Kalon” Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley First planted back in 1868, this legendary alluvial vineyard in Oakville has been garnering raves ever since, and this powerhouse is no exception. Parker described it as “inky purple in color, with extraordinary richness and unctuosity, magnificent fruit purity, black fruits, blue fruits, some incense, graphite, fruitcake and spice, this is absolutely pedal-to-the metal, staggeringly rich, incredibly well-balanced and profound Cabernet Sauvignon. It should drink well for 20-25 years.”

ROBERT CRAIG
Robert Craig, who pioneered winemaking on Mt. Veeder, is one of the most humble and likable guys we know in Napa, so we’re happy he and his wife Lynn are enjoying their retirement. Managing Partner and CEO Elton Slone is guiding the winery into a new era with investment in estate vineyards, winemaking technology, and talent. They’ve shifted to sourcing 85% from estate-owned vineyards on Howell Mountain and Mt. Veeder, which offers greater control of quality and the escalating price of Napa Cabernet fruit. Critics from The Wine Advocate, SF Chronicle, Wine & Spirits consistently rank Robert Craig wines as some of the best under-the-radar values for Napa Cabs of such concentration, structure and ageability.
’14 “Spring Mountain” Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley There’s an irresistible grace and purity to this biodynamically farmed wine from Crowley Vineyard high up on Spring Mountain, not far from Vineyard 7&8. Parker raved about its “beautiful blueberry and black raspberry fruit, a cool, almost floral note, medium to full body and sensational purity and texture... This is a beauty of finesse and restraint, yet intensity.” This is an absolute must for a 10-year rest in your cellar.
1WRCR14CS3SPRING | $89.95 btl.
’14 “Howell Mountain” Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley With Howell Mountain luminaries like Abreu and O’Shaughnessy receiving similar scores, this wine is a striking comparative bargain, and you don’t have to do the mailing list tap-dance to secure your share! Parker called this “strikingly rich, opaque purple in color, with mulberry, boysenberry, blackberry, graphite and flowers, the wine is rich, chewy, full-bodied, multi-layered, and just a sensational example of Howell Mountain. Sadly, most Napa Howell Mountain Cabernets of this quality sell for $200plus, but this one is available for under $100, which is to the credit of the folks at Robert Craig.” Jump on this one!

JEAN HOEFLIGER
WINEMAKER
Of all the things that Jean Hoefliger has learned from über winemaker Michel Rolland, the most important may be that a little self-doubt is good for the soul—and the wine. “You’re so much into your wines, and it’s important to doubt what you do,” says Hoefliger, best known as the head winemaker for Alpha Omega in St. Helena. “He’s someone I trust who’s not going to tell me it’s great, but how can we improve this?” Hoefliger’s quest to improve his craft took him from his native Switzerland to Bordeaux to California, where he earned acclaim at Newton Vineyards. Today, besides Alpha Omega, he’s also making wines for Sunshine Valley, AXR, Michel Rolland and The Debate. In his career, he’s earned nearly 30 scores of 95+ from The Wine Advocate. A self-described “aging freak”—the oldest prize in his cellar is a 1928 Château Smith Haut-Lafitte—Hoefliger uses barrel aging to make Napa Cabs approachable. “It’s important for me as a modern winemaker to make wine accessible at age 0 to 20 years,” he said.
’14 AXR Cabernet Sauvignon • Napa Valley Like all of Jean’s wines, this is an impressively powerful yet approachable Napa Cab. The Wine Advocate called the 2014 AXR “an impressively constructed wine, with delicious blackberry and blueberry fruit intermixed with charcoal embers, Christmas fruitcake and forest floor, followed by a richly fruity, full-bodied, opulent, classic 2014 that is sexy, endearing, and already delicious and complex.”
1WAXR14CS3 | $79.95 btl.
’14 AXR Chardonnay • Napa Valley We loved this wine’s firm acidity counterbalanced by luscious ripeness. The Wine Advocate swooned for its “notes of white currants, citrus oil, nectarine and white peach. Medium to fullbodied, it displays terrific acidity and beautiful fruit purity that reminds me of some of the great Domaine Niellon premier cru Chassagne-Montrachets of the mid-1980s.” A Chardonnay to lay in by the case!

’14 The Debate Single Vineyard Collection 3-pack • Napa Valley Though it’s a relatively new project, The Debate has had an audacious debut. This joint venture between Hoefliger and philanthropist and wine lover Rob McKay has received the kind of press in The Wine Advocate that many wineries can only dream about. The duo works closely each year with vineyard impresario Andy Beckstoffer to create three distinct expressions of three of the most iconic Napa Valley terroirs: Dr. Crane in Saint Helena (est’d 1858), Missouri Hopper in Yountville (est’d 1877), and To Kalon in Oakville (est’d 1868). All three of these Cabernets are made in precisely the same way, so lively debate is sure to ensue around the table about the differences between the three wines. Why not lay in a few of these three-packs? Robert M. Parker Jr. said the Dr. Crane resembled La Mission HautBrion with “notes of charcoal embers, barbecue smoke, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, violets and a touch of wood spice, it is full-bodied, powerful, concentrated, layered and impressive.” Parker described Missouri Hopper as “opaque purple color and a youthful blackberry and black raspberry-scented nose with some notes of lead pencil shavings, forest floor and tobacco leaf.” While the To Kalon is rich, structured and tannic, Parker stated “dense black currant fruit intermixed with hints of camphor, blackberry and unsmoked cigar tobacco are present in this wine… an elegant take on the To Kalon Vineyard.”

’15 Sunshine Valley Cabernet Sauvignon • Napa Valley The Cabernet from this single vineyard on the northwest side of Oak Knoll offers a rare combination of complete ripeness and intensity with pristine freshness. It’s farmed by Jean Hoefliger and his team to exacting standards, and the resulting wine receives huge scores! Only a handful of cases of this brilliant, bespoke Cabernet Sauvignon are for sale in the US, and you can buy them here. Finding these little Napa Valley rubies and giving you access to them is our mission when we arrive at the office each day. Don’t miss this one!

Tuscany is a magical region that captures the imagination. The very word conjures a vacation spent driving through hills covered in ancient olive trees and old stone buildings, beautiful peach and purple sunsets and seemingly endless meals overflowing with supple and earthy red wines. Podere Brizio, Italy
’15 Podere Brizio • Rosso di Montalcino The beauty of Rosso di Montalcino is that it’s a young-vine Brunello that spends less time in wood, so it emerges fresher and more fruit driven from the bottle than its more expensive big sister. This one is all about bright red cherries, a hint of juniper, red plums, and dusty, chocolaty minerals. You may have a hard time putting the cork back in it!
1WPBR15IR3R | $23.95 btl.
’12 Podere Brizio • Brunello di Montalcino A spectacular estate (neighboring Caprili and Soldera) that was renovated by businessman Alejandro Bulgheroni, Podere Brizio is starting to get far more attention, and it certainly deserves yours! Wine Spectator raved that Podere Brizio Brunello di Montalcino “features a beam of pure cherry, augmented by floral, underbrush, tar and tobacco notes. Elegant, yet dense on the finish, exerting tannic grip for now. Excellent length.”
1WPBR12IR3BDM | $54.95 btl.
’13 Fattoria La Massa “Carla 6” Proprietary Red • Toscana If you crave the very best in Brunello di Montalcino, or collect the finest 100% Sangiovese wines of Chianti Classico, such as Cepparello or Le Pergole Torte, here’s another ruby for your treasure cave that will age 15-20 years effortlessly. “The 2013 Carla 6 is a pure expression of Sangiovese… The bouquet reveals beautiful plum and dark cherry with succulent layers of spice and tobacco.” –The Wine Advocate

’13 Fattoria La Massa “Giorgio Primo” Proprietary Red • Toscana It’s hard to top The Wine Advocate’s assessment of this Cabernet blend: “This is an extraordinary achievement. The level of sophistication and pedigree demonstrated by this wine puts it on par with Italy’s best blended reds... a truly sumptuous wine that stands as a tall testament to the winemaking talents of Giampaolo Motta.” Why not put away a case of this first-growth quality wine for a long rest?

Ornellaia, Italy
’06 Tenuta Dell’Ornellaia ”Ornellaia” Proprietary Red • Bolgheri Superiore The critics were near-unanimous in their praise for this wine. Antonio Galloni of Vinous swooned, “A towering, vivid wine, the 2006 Ornellaia bristles with power, depth and intensity. Broad swaths of tannin support the vibrant, youthful flavors in a captivating, breathtaking wine of the highest level. Those lucky enough to own it are in for a treat.” A stunning Ornellaia for the ages, and it’s only getting started.

Malt Maniacs Unite Aberlour A’Bunadh “Cask Strength” Single Malt Whisky • Speyside Think you need to spend more than a C-note for great single malt? Think again. “A’Bunadh” (a-boonarh) is Arberlour’s nod to the whiskies of yesteryear. (Let’s just say this isn’t for the faint of heart.) An intensely sherried and fullbodied nose with flavors of nutty malt, caramel apple and a hint of smoke and cocoa. This is top-shelf quality at a bargain price… you win.

Highland Park 18-Year Single Malt Whisky • Orkney Premium sherry oak casks and locally collected peat moss are just a few of the spare-no-expense trademarks of Scotland’s northernmost distillery. The result is wood smoke, almond, cherry and plum flavors, cradled by spicy embers with an expansive, near-perfect balance on the finish. It’s no wonder that spirits journalist F. Paul Pacult named this the “Best Spirit in the World.” A must-have for any single-malt enthusiast.
1SHPANVWH318 | $134.95 btl.
The Exceptional Malt “2nd Edition” Whisky • Scotland A blend of several single malts from sources including Glenfarclas and Macallan, aged up to 30 years. Hints of pears layered with cherries and honey lead through a soft palate with classic sherry notes of raisin, vanilla and dried orange peel. The long and beautifully complex finish is masterful. We’ve seen many of the high-end whiskies lose their flair (and raise their prices), so it’s refreshing to taste a whisky of this caliber offered at a fantastic price.

The finish is voluptuous, seductive, and laden with a gingery spice. We bought as much of this as we could. You should too.

AMERICAN INGENUITY Four Roses 11-Year “Cask Strength Bounty Hunter Private Selection” Bourbon (OBSF) • Kentucky Replete with dark red fruits, oaky spice and waves of vanilla, this is among the most complex Four Roses Four Roses Distillery, Kentucky single barrel selections we’ve made. Lushly textured with a hint of toast, orange peel, cedar and vanilla crème, the palate keeps us salivating. Add a little water and smell the waves of caramel turn to butterscotch. Four Roses “Small Batch” Bourbon Whiskey • Kentucky A blend of four of the 10 different mash bills that Four Roses uses and bottled at 90 proof. This is a classic small batch and one of the company’s signature releases. Cinnamon, dark fruit and caramel dominate the nose of this whiskey. Overall, this bottle really brings the best of each recipe to the fore. On the palate it’s heady with leathery, spicy notes that are framed by a dose of brown sugar. A little touch of heat on the finish rounds this shot out nicely. You won’t find a better value in Kentucky.
1SFRONVWH3 | $34.95 btl.
Hooker’s House Rye Whiskey • Sonoma Whose house? The infamous General Joseph Hooker’s to be exact; a Civil War veteran, Sonoma resident, ladies’ man and whiskey aficionado. His debaucherous legacy matched the bold and spicy character of this barrel-aged rye and thus inspired the name. Robust aromas of brown sugar, blackberries, and vanilla with flavors of red fruit, juicy Zinfandel and a fresh loaf of dark rye that reminds us why we love this grain.
1SHHONVWH3R | $44.95 btl.
Michter’s “Barrel Strength” Rye • Kentucky Michter’s philosophy about maturation in oak differs from many of their peers. Their belief that a richer, more complex and full-bodied whiskey is achieved when the spirit is put in barrel at 103 proof is changing the way we think about whiskey. Butterscotch, cinnamon and toasted vanilla aromas give way to a spice-laden backbone and long finish. Rye this great doesn’t come along every day. You’d be wise to grab a bottle!

It’s a juniper and citrus forward gin that is accented by hints of baking spice and vanilla bean. If you want to jazz up your G&T or make a mean gin Manhattan, this is the way to go. REFINED ELEGANCE
Driftless Glen, Wisconsin
Driftless Glen 5-Year “Reserve” Brandy • Wisconsin A killer brandy if we ever had one! The weather in Wisconsin isn’t too friendly for grape growing, but the cold winters make for great brandy drinking climes, and folks from the Badger State clamor for the stuff. This has all the classic brandy notes of new leather, hints of dried fruits and spice with an added depth of vanilla, apple core and a touch of oak from the ex-bourbon barrels. This is one brandy that drinks far older than its age. It’s absolutely delicious and a steal at under $60.

1994 Château Pellehaut Armagnac • Ténarèze Ténarèze may not get the publicity that Bas-Armagnac gets, but this little under-the-radar region produces amazing brandies. Full of weight, depth and spice, this gem is a fraction of the price a similar Armagnac from a more well-known region would command. The fruit is the star and the oak takes a supporting role giving this an astonishing balance. Ask for more from your brandy and treat yourself to your new favorite French libation!
1SPEL94BR3 | $99.95 btl.
Osocalis “X.O. Alambic” Brandy • California This is the closest we have found to Cognac in a US-born and bred brandy! Complex waves of orange blossom, toffee, and leather leap from the glass leading to a full-bodied palate with notes of vanilla, caramel, cocoa powder, and orange rind. Dan Farber puts his training to great use blending older stocks of Pinot Noir, Colombard, and Semillon to perfection. Crafting a masterpiece brandy with this elegance and finesse is akin to DaVinci putting the final brushstrokes on the Mona Lisa.

CLASSIC BEAUTIES ’15 12C “Beckstoffer Georges III” Cabernet Sauvignon • Napa Valley A producer to watch! The 12C wines are crafted by Mike Smith, who, thanks in part to Beckstoffer fruit, now has five 100-Point wines under his belt for Carter Cellars. We flipped for this wine’s notes of dark chocolate, Italian amaro, ancho chiles, and black cherry syrup. It has such indulgent, sweet Cabernet fruit we simply couldn’t resist it. You won’t be able to either!
1W12C15CS3GIII | $89.95 btl.
’13 Altvs Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley “Altvs” means “noble and profound” in Latin, and it’s a barrel selection made by Merus, one of the hottest Cabernet producers in the valley. David Lattin and David Ramey—who between them have some of the greatest resumés in Napa Valley—work together to craft this sumptuous red, full of ripe cherry and chocolate notes, and with three years in the bottle, it’s softening and unfurling gorgeous perfumes of red roses and cassis in the mouth.
1WALT13CS3 | $69.95 btl.
’15 B Cellars “Star” Cabernet Sauvignon • Rutherford Star Vineyard is in the beating heart of Rutherford, and in our view—after 20+ years of tasting Rutherford wines—it’s one of the appellation’s best vineyards. This is simply profound Cabernet—our notes feature a dizzying array of flavors: “Leathery, graphite, dark chocolate, Rutherford dust, black cherry jam. ROCKIN’!” Don’t wait for the score on this one, because in the short 2015 vintage, it will be gone!
1WBCE15CS3STAR | $124.95 btl.
’15 Hunnicutt Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Ever wish you could go back in time and buy a lot more of a wine, because in hindsight the wine was underpriced? The Cabernet we’re offering you today has all the boxes checked: Absolutely CRACKING vintage (2015), stellar winemaker (Kirk Venge), and a brand that is an emerging cult. We have only a handful of boxes to offer you of this opulent, radiant, fresh Cabernet this year—act quickly to lay in your case!

BIG BOY CABS! ’15 Jigar Cabernet Sauvignon • Dry Creek Valley Rich and earthy, with chocolate-covered cherries and enticing accents of leather and exotic spice, this is in Jigar’s easygoing, totally drinkable style. It’s a great remedy for the $125 Napa Valley Cabernet blues if we ever saw one! Just a killer deal in Cabernet that over-delivers by a country mile! Try at least a mixed bottle in your case.
1WJIG15CS3 | $24.95 btl.
’13 Parabellum by Force Majeure Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain, Washington A ripe, self-assured Cabernet with notes of vanilla, mint, and a juicy, savory, super-ripe compote of black plums and huckleberries. This is a real treat just to smell, let alone sip.
1WPAR13CS3 | $64.95 btl.
’15 The Prisoner Wine Company “Cuttings” Cabernet Sauvignon • California Sourced from various high-altitude hillside vineyards throughout Napa Valley, this is unapologetic, massive Cabernet. Intense aromas of dark plums, baking spice and cigar box lead into a lush palate of black cherry, cola and freshly roasted coffee. A plush and lengthy finish will have you coming back for more. A “big boy” of a Cabernet, for sure!
1WPRI15CS3CUTTINGS | $49.95 btl.
’14 Pursuit Cabernet Sauvignon • Napa Valley This is without a doubt the finest Pursuit Cab we’ve yet made, assembled from a structured, firm Howell Mountain parcel and plush Cabernet from Soda Canyon. Blueberry and cassis fruit lead the aromatic charge, with mocha, dark cherries, and dark chocolate hot on their heels. We’ll put this up against any Cab in the Valley at this price point, any day of the week!

INCREDIBLY QUAFFABLE
Robert Mondavi, Napa Valley
’13 Robert Mondavi “To-Kalon Reserve” Cabernet Sauvignon • Oakville In the modern era, no vineyard has come to define the greatness of Oakville for Cabernet Sauvignon more than To-Kalon, which sits roughly atop a gravel alluvial fan that emerges eastward from the Mayacamas Range. If ever we recommend a Cabernet Sauvignon for long-term aging, this is it. Rich, savory, unfurling an enticing bolt of cassis liqueur fruit on the palate, this is one to put away for 15 or more years, and savor the great 2013 vintage one bottle at a time.
1WRMO13CS3TKR | $139.95 btl.
’16 Union Sacré “Le Confident” Cabernet Sauvignon Happy Canyon, Santa Barbara NEW! Here’s a garage project in San Luis Obispo from two old friends, Philip Muzzy (a Michigander) and Xavier Arnaudin, (a Rhôdanien). This Cabernet is incredibly quaffable, thirst-quenching, and fruit driven, drenched in boysenberry and huckleberry liqueur aromas. It is just right down the fairway, not overripe or ponderous, not overoaked, just an incredibly honest and delicious bottle of Cab. Simple.
1WUSA16CS3LC | $29.95 btl.
’13 Waypoint “Tierra Buena” Cabernet Sauvignon • Spring Mountain District We sourced the fruit for the Tierra Buena Cabernet Sauvignon from a historic vineyard on Spring Mountain. First planted in the 1880s, this is the “good earth” at its finest. Grown mostly at 1,100 feet, this sun-drenched hillside above the fog line is the perfect home for fruit that develops supreme concentration and exquisite tannins. Bold, structured like the proverbial brick shelter, this oozes class and blackcurrant fruit to spare.

POWERFUL & JUICY ’15 Bevan “Ontogeny” Proprietary Red • Napa Valley The follow-up to the spectacular 2014, which Parker rated 96, Ontogeny is non-negotiable. The 2015 is massive but nimble on the palate, saturated with a top note of peach, black cherry, ripe plums, and black figs, and a pronounced meaty essence. Russell says it’s an “I’m-a-short-rib-who’s-lived-in-a-crock-potfor-four-hours-too-long kind of meaty depth.” Crafted with a significant chunk of Sugarloaf Mountain fruit, this wine is powerful but juicy, and will sell out quickly, so act fast!
1WBEV15PR3ONTOGENY | $99.95 btl.
’14 Buoncristiani “O.P.C.” Proprietary Red • Napa Valley “Ol’ Pa’s Cuvée” has become Buoncristiani’s signature blend, reflecting four brothers’ passion for blending wines with concentration, power, and varietal character, while retaining balance and elegance. It’s a totally juicy, pleasurable blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Syrah, 20% Malbec, and 12% Merlot that floored our tasting panel, and Parker too, who said “One of my favorite under-the-radar wineries is Buoncristiani.” We agree 100%! Do NOT miss this wine.
1WBUO14PR3OPC | $59.95 btl.
’13 Jon Nathaniel “The Fabulist” Proprietary Red • Napa Valley Created as a tribute to founder John Komes, the Fabulist is a wine that intrigues and holds attention as it reveals itself. Robert Parker found it “a beautifully suave wine, no doubt based on a lot of Cabernet Sauvignon, but with attractive tannins, and notes of cedar wood, new saddle leather, red and black fruits and spice box. The wine is medium to full-bodied, opulent, sexy and pure.”
1WJNA13PR3FABULIST | $99.95 btl.
’14 Parabellum by Force Majeure Proprietary Red Red Mountain, Washington Parabellum is [Red Mountain luminary] Force Majeure’s second label that uses estate fruit to create approachable wines ready to enjoy now. The Wine Advocate said “the 2014 Parabellum is an entry-level wine that way over-delivers. Blackcurrants, graphite, lots of minerality, chocolate and just a touch of floral notes all flow to a rich, medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated and balanced Bordeaux blend that’s going to drink nicely for at least 7-8 years, and my money is on even longer.”

SEXY STYLES ’15 Domaine Pierre Marey Corton-Charlemagne This wine shows off the round, plump character of 2015 in an almost shameless display. Our tasting notes for this great bottle of Chardonnay are filled with words like: “Crème Brulée. Lemon custard. Toast. Figs, cream, and coconut.” A bombshell Grand Cru that gets three stars all the way. Simply not to be missed.
1WPMA15IW3CC | $149.95 btl.
’14 Waypoint “Hudson” Chardonnay Carneros, Napa Valley When you’re talking about Hudson Ranch in Carneros, it’s hard not to marvel at their client list. Only 12 of Hudson’s 26 clients are allowed to print Hudson Vineyard on their labels, and we’re proud to be part of this elite group. In 2014, Tim Milos crafted a big bad Chardonnay. It’s roomy and plump, with notes of pineapple, butter, mango, and pears. It’s very low in acidity and in a dense, sweet-fruited, crowd-pleasing style. Take it from us, folks—this is the Chardonnay most likely to vaporize when you turn your back on it at a dinner party.
1WWAY14CH3H | $39.95 btl.
’13 Sixto “Moxee” Chardonnay Columbia Valley The Wine Advocate swooned for this wine, loving its “Chablis-like notes of lemon curd, apple tart, brioche and crushed rock to go with a medium to full-bodied, supple, textured, even sexy style on the palate.” Wine Spectator called it “taut and tangy, balancing vibrancy against rich pear, pineapple and clotted cream flavors. Finishes long, with mineral and spice notes.” Any way you slice it, this is a fantastically creamy, spicy bottle of Chardonnay to lay in by the case for entertaining and self-care this winter. Let’s put a box on the truck!
1WSIX13CH3MOXEE | $39.95 btl.
’15 B Cellars Chardonnay Sonoma Coast Effusive and expressive, lemon butter and notes of ripe figs seduce you at first sniff. It’s tropical and creamy, but the firm acidic handshake lets you know it means business. The team at B Cellars has produced a very serious Chardonnay, worth every penny!

A SUPERLATIVE VINTAGE! 2016 in Bordeaux was a vintage as close to perfection as we’ll see in a long time. We’re struck by a few things here. First, there is remarkable critical consensus about each wine, which tells us that these wines will make a similarly striking impression on you. Secondly, how do you cherry-pick through a giant bowl of cherries? The scores are so high, we’ve frankly found it hard to sift out what not to offer you.

’16 Château La Mission Haut-Brion Pessac-Léognan “La Mish” is stunning in 2016. Antonio Galloni of Vinous calls it “a total knockout. Vertical and powerful, but not at all austere, it exudes class. Fine-grained tannins support the fruit, but they are barely felt, as the wine’s balance is so extraordinary.” The Wine Advocate raved that it “leaves you reaching for the thesaurus looking for superlatives.”
1WLMH16IR3 | $475 btl.
’16 Château Cos d’Estournel Grand Cru Classe • St-Estèphe An exotically scented second-growth that thinks it’s a first-growth, Cos [COSS] is loaded with weightless power in 2016. This is one of the wines of the vintage, and it’s comfortably under $300! “The palate was astonishing: exquisite balance, perhaps the most precise and detailed Cos d’Estournel…The persistence, the reverberation in the mouth is quite magnificent… It really oozes class and sophistication….” – The Wine Advocate
1WCDE16IR3 | $199.95 btl.
’16 Château Smith Haut-Lafitte Grand Cru Classe de Graves Rouge • Pessac-Léognan Graves is on fire in this vintage, and it helps that this property is on a roll too! Galloni calls it “fabulous. Subtle, nuanced and classy, it speaks to finesse more than power. All the elements fall into place effortlessly. Gracious and light on its feet, the 2016 possesses exceptional balance and class, with captivating freshness and energy.”
1WSHL16IR3 | $114.95 btl.
’16 Château Malescot St. Exupéry • Margaux James Suckling says it all: “A fabulous value in Margaux, this is a superb wine. I didn’t think it could be better than the 2015 but indeed it is. Full, layered and sexy. It goes on for minutes with dense fruit, yet it’s also vivid and showcases sublime tannins and acidity balance. Great finish.”

SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE
Gaining international attention
Bodega Garzón, Uruguay
Chile and Argentina have been players on the world wine scene for a while now, but the next South American country to watch is Uruguay. Tannat has been enjoyed in Uruguay for decades, but as quality rises and international winemakers apply their talents, wines from this country are gaining well-deserved international attention.
’15 Garzón “Single Vineyard” Tannat • Uruguay Black as night, with gutsy blackberry and blackcurrant aromas, the wine is almost chewy, with hints of white pepper and bitter dark chocolate lingering through the finish. This is a fantastic candidate for the cellar, and a huge bargain. Decanter said it “offers great balance, full bodied, good grip and succulent black fruits, tobacco and dark chocolate with a fresh finish.” Another Decanter reviewer loved its “Intense notes of dark fruits, chocolate, and sweet spices. Well-built although tannins are quite firm. Very tight but there’s striking concentration and a persistent finish. A wine you could happily put away for a while in the cellar.”
1WGAR15IR3SV | $29.95 btl.
’15 Vistalba “Corte A” Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza A blend of Malbec with splashes of Bonarda and Cabernet Sauvignon, the Corte A is a bold wine sourced from old vines. This intense red wine tantalizes with aromas of dark chocolate, dried plums and sweet tobacco. On the palate, it’s balanced with flavors of sweet red and black fruits, chocolate and spices.
1WVIS15IR3CORTEA | $59.95 btl.
’15 Vistalba “Corte B” • Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza Bonarda adds brightness to this otherwise traditional Bordeaux blend of 81% Malbec and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon. An intense violet red, the wine’s attack features fresh plum, dried figs and blackberries, as well as notes of tobacco, vanilla and cedar wood imparted by aging in French oak. In the glass, the wine is voluminous with flavors of cacao and dark chocolate wrapped in velvety tannins. The finish is long and persistent. We’d love to put this in as a ringer in a lineup of Napa Valley wines!
1WVIS15IR3CORTEB | $29.95 btl.
’15 Vistalba “Corte C” • Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza This deep ruby-colored estate-grown wine is a blend of 82% Malbec and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aromas of red fruits, dried plums and ripe black cherries give way to a palate filled with sweet fruit flavors. Silky tannins accent notes of ripe cherries, dried fruit and a hint of almond. It’s a fantastic pairing for a weeknight lamb chop.
