from the publisher Welcome Hello everyone and welcome to the premier issue of Boulevard magazine­— The essential guide for locals & visitors. We have chosen, as our mission, to actively promote all things of substance and style in the Tidewater region: the performing arts, the diverse music scene from alternative to zydeco, our rich epicurean offerings, the expansive sun, surf and ocean heritage of our unique coastal community. This issue’s theme is “a glance back and a look forward.”

One of our favorite words to describe this year is “resilient,” and for those of you who study history there is much to learn from the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918—when our collection of seven coastal cities was commonly known as Tidewater. Over the years, that name has stuck, even after a variety of branding efforts to better describe our region have taken place. Some of these regional monikers have their own history: Hampton Roads, Coastal Virginia, The 757, to name a few. The Boulevard Team does not intend to ignore those efforts at regional branding; however, we appreciate the classic and time-tested reference along with innovation. As you’ll read in this issue’s features, those who can nod back to the past with respect­—while adjusting for future change—have shown us how they persist, survive and thrive here in what we call Tidewater.

Boulevard will promote economic development and tourism while acknowledging this moment in history that the commonwealth, as a whole, faces. A new era is dawning that will further invigorate and bolster our region’s brand as an emerging center of excellence for business, technology, civilian opportunity and military prowess. Recent events like the selection by Amazon of Crystal City for the location of the much-envied HQ2 will mean at least 40,000 new high-paying jobs in the technology sector for Northern Virginia.

The confluence of events like “Something in the Water” and the Amazon mother ship landing here will add additional spotlights on why this region has such importance. We’re up-and-coming and the efforts of just a few will put Tidewater on the map.

Boulevard intends to become a catalyst for the events of this “Zeitgeist Moment” and we have a genuine interest in helping this area to grow and prosper. Back before the COVID-19 Pandemic hit the United States hard, The Boulevard Team had joined the Virginia Beach Hotel Association and the Virginia Beach Restaurant Association. We had started an outreach strategy to connect with the civic leaders, chamber executives, city of Virginia Beach teams, the Small Business Administration, Virginia Small Business Development Center and the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce’s 757 Alliance. Why? We wanted to educate these groups about our media platform launch and how we will become a central contributor to expanding the economy for the travel and tourism sector and those small businesses that rely on business and vacation travelers to Tidewater.

Adapting to the future while celebrating the past

Morris “Moss” Beecroft received admission to law school at the University of Virginia in 1955, although it came with a caveat due to past academic performance—the school deferred him for a year. This seemingly negative news changed his life’s course.

At the same time, a good friend talked him into opening a campus store at Florida State University (FSU) in Tallahassee. which they named Beecroft & Delancey, Ltd. This began the legacy of the future Beecroft & Bull, Ltd.

Eventually Moss bought all the shares in Beecroft & Delancey, Ltd., renaming it Beecroft, Ltd.

He met Francis, a student at FSU, when a friend who also became a lifelong employee, introduced them. They married and moved back to his hometown of Newport News, VA where they partnered with his friend Maurice “Bunky” Bull and renamed the business one last time on September 5, 1958 to Beecroft & Bull, Ltd. The three entrepreneurs worked alongside each other to grow the business.

“Back in those days there were no formal positions,” said son, Craig Beecroft, current owner of Beecroft & Bull, Ltd. “The guys were the owners, frontmen, salesmen and buyers. My mom did the books and helped a lot with the buying. Mom was instrumental in the business’ early success from day one. I would call them all entrepreneurs in the purest sense.”

When Bull left the business, the Beecrofts kept the name and repeated their success, opening the Williamsburg store in 1969 and the Virginia Beach location on Pacific Avenue in 1979.

The key to their growth came from Moss’ belief in customer service, which he passed on to his employees.

“From early on, the customer service was more important than the clothing itself,” said Craig. “People will remember how you made them feel more than what they bought.”

Unlike his brother, Bryan, who always seemed to know his life’s direction and had already joined the family business, Craig remained undecided about his future.

“I really didn’t know what I wanted to do,” said Craig. “I was an average-at-best student interested in a lot of things.”

He backpacked across Europe for months after graduating from the University of Virginia, returning to live with his parents in Newport News. For a while he followed his father around as he ran the Newport News, Williamsburg and Virginia Beach store locations. With no real job description or responsibility, he floated through days without a spark.

“I wasn’t finished sowing my oats, so to speak,” said Craig.

He informed his parents he wanted to move to Aspen, CO for a year and they informed him he would have to support himself. He rose to the challenge, working three jobs, allowing him to experience an amazing winter.

Toward the end of the season, Moss said he needed Craig back home because key employees had left the business In April, 1984, Craig returned to Newport News and his parents put him to work as a salesman at the Virginia Beach store. By September, the manager left, and that position became his.

said Craig. “Family pride took over and I took to it quickly and loved it. I made a lot of mistakes early, but it was very clear that is what I was going to do.”

The new manager also rose to No. 1 in sales by fall of 1984.

Throughout the years, the Beecroft & Bull lineup has included five locations: Newport News, Williamsburg, Richmond, Norfolk and Charlottesville. Newport News, Williamsburg and Richmond remain in operation today, each with its own unique personality.

“All of our stores have a different feel, and that’s by design,” said Craig.

“The stores fit the vibe of the town.

We never had a chain store mentality.”

The Virginia Beach store represents a more relaxed lifestyle story with vintage posters, motorcycles and guitars on display.

location, where a larger population surrounds it, two years ago.

The landlord courted them for years, but Dan Ryan’s Fine Clothiers occupied a space there and Craig always considered Hilltop Dan Ryan’s area. In a kind of gentleman’s rule, he considered it bad form to infringe on another man’s territory. In a twist of fate, the Dan Ryan’s space became available just as Craig had poised to sign the renewal on Pacific Place.

Not initially wanting to move, Beecroft researched it for a few months, even polling some of their faithful customers. Very few saw a downside. Their opinions and due diligence foretold the future. The move has proven successful with no loss of loyal customers and the patronage of many new ones.

In a challenging retail atmosphere because of current restrictions, changing clothing habits and the

struggle for brick-and-mortar stores to deal with the overhead that online stores avoid, Beecroft & Bull continues to adapt. Heading toward their 62nd year, Beecroft credits that ability to the long-standing belief, inherited from his parents, in customer service, quality and a wellcurated selection.

The business currently employs 16 people and they understand the mantra.

“It helps to have great people on the floor, as well as behind the scenes, keeping it all together,” said Craig. “We want people to keep coming back, and that requires dedication on all fronts.”

“It’s not about the one sale. It’s about forming a relationship,” said Craig. “Our customers are like family.

We have served generations of families, and that’s humbling.”

Today’s retail spots convey modern style with a nod to tradition—with Craig leading the ever-evolving direction of the business.

Craig’s son, Schuyler, who said he would never work with his father in retail, has collaborated with the family business in a different manner. An art director for Mollusk Surf Shop and freelance artist, he designed and executed a mural in the ViBe Creative District of Virginia Beach. They used that design, as well as many others, on products for purchase in the shop.

Schuyler has more designs, exclusive to Beecroft & Bull, in the works.

The business has adapted in other ways as well. Craig acknowledges the different flavor of the Virginia Beach business in relation

to the other stores.

“As the result of the recent drama in the world, the majority of our suit and sport coat business is now for special occasions,” said Craig. “The percentage of casual business to dress has always been higher in Virginia Beach, and frankly, more exciting to me personally. We’re already moving heavier in that direction. We’re adding new vendors and new products for immediate arrival. We’re not looking back.”

Beecroft & Bull also has a new website under construction with the addition of e-commerce.

“We wanted to offer this alternative to those who don’t feel comfortable going out as often right now,” said Craig. “There’s nothing like

our in-store experience, and we don’t want e-commerce to be a substitute.

We also hope to expand our name outside of Virginia this way.”

As it always has, the Beecroft & Bull organization will add its unique touch to this facet of the business.

“We want our online experience to capture a sense of our personality,” said Craig. “We’re going to make a big deal out of it in our marketing. It’s going to be an interesting fall—a challenging fall.

But we’re ready for it.”

Jill Doczi has written and edited in public relations, marketing and journalism for a lifetime, forever trying to earn the respect of her journalism instructors. She resides in Virginia Beach—her home since the end of high school—while a piece of her heart remains in the Virginia mountains of her adolescence. She oversees a postage stamp of property by the Chesapeake Bay including pond fish and yard turtles, while defending her urban farm from squirrels.

culture & the arts MOCA: A New Focus on the Past While the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art’s (MOCA) current exhibits have been nearly two years in the making, their relevance to the present moment could not be overstated. “Shifting Gaze: A Reconstruction of The Black & Hispanic Body in Contemporary Art” presents a selection of works from Robert B. Feldman’s extensive collection of contemporary art. This year, Virginia MOCA celebrates the 25th anniversary of the juried “New Waves” exhibition of work by Virginia artists, with juror Susan Thompson, associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum. MOCA also displays the first solo show of Virginia native Hampton Boyer, “hampton boyer: there’s no place like here.”

The latest “New Waves” exhibit highlights 29 of the top regional artists

“Shifting Gaze”: “Columbus Day,” Titus Kaphar [1] Created in response to his son’s classroom lesson on the October holiday, “Columbus Day” re-examines the oft-told hero story of the famed 1492 landing and asks the viewer to shift their gaze and question how they see hierarchy in art, history and life.

“Shifting Gaze”: “Zion Crossing,” Radcliff Bailey [2] Originally part of an exhibit on the slaves that settled in the Great Dismal Swamp, the combination of railroad spikes and painted canvas is equal parts intriguing and bracing, referencing the underground railroad, ancestry, memory and the specter of violence in black history. With multiple interpretations, “Zion Crossing” invites the viewer to create the piece’s narrative while solemnly speaking to touchpoints in American history from the black and brown experience.

“New Waves 2020”: “First Born (Homage to Jack Whitten),” Roberto Jamora [3] Reflecting on the skin color of his unborn, mixed-race child with his new bride, a white, Filipino artist, Jamora accidentally blended the top layer of colors producing an uneven gradient atop a previously painted canvas. Strategically removing it reveals a hidden world of colorful paint below. With the anticipation of the colored lines nearly touching and the titular reference to Whitten, the groundbreaking black contemporary artist, “First Born (Homage to Jack Whitten)” thoughtfully explores what it means to be a mixed child in a colorcoded world. “hampton boyer: there’s no place like here”: “Catastrophe,” Hampton Boyer [4] As part of his first solo museum show, “Catastrophe” represents a turning point in Boyer’s work, departing from the colorful accessibility of his previous works to an exploration of his race and identity, something he had previously not delved into as inspiration for his work. With the freedom of collage–the moving and playing around of shapes and color with the ability to take away and add at will–Boyers pushes past a creative roadblock and into a deeper understanding of himself as a black man native to, and living in, southern Virginia.

With Hampton Roads’ long and storied history regarding race relations, understanding the past provides the perspective to lead to real progress. James Baldwin wrote it best in “The Fire Next Time”: “To accept one’s past—one’s history—is not the same thing as drowning in it; it is learning how to use it. An invented past can never be used; it cracks and crumbles under the pressures of life like clay in a season of drought.”

lthough the slightly chilly air makes many people think the growing season has ended, area farmers have really just begun harvesting their fall vegetables and have many offerings for locals and visitors. Fall in the farming community means both a harvest bounty and agritourism. Customers can purchase fresh products along with an experience worthy of a photo shoot.

Cullipher Farm in the Pungo area of Virginia Beach has focused on both products and experiences since the first small corn maze 10 years ago. This sixth-generation family farm, currently operated by the fourth, fifth and sixth generations, grows produce on 70 acres throughout the southern end of Virginia Beach. They sell their offerings at their farm stand on Princess Anne Road, but in recent years they have also focused on agritourism—farming that links agricultural production and/or processing with tourism to attract visitors to the farm location for entertainment, education and experience. The Cullipher Patch in Pungo features pick-your-own peaches, strawberries, blueberries, apples and pumpkins when in season and may add grapes to the lineup in the future.

The fall experience at Cullipher Farm includes corn, sunflower and cotton mazes as well as a pumpkin patch. The corn maze, the biggest fall draw, evolves with great secrecy. The farm releases the design each year in midSeptember with the buildup and excitement of an album drop. Past designs include a person fishing from a boat, a surfer catching waves and a Delta Waterfowl image that promoted the nonprofit’s mission.

“Sometimes we just pick something local to promote and sometimes we work in partnerships with other local businesses,” said Jane Cullipher.

This year’s 11-acre maze will have wider paths and multiple entrances and exits to keep everyone at a safe distance. The design represents their partnership with Farmers Bank, where they love to “think outside the box,” and welcomes the business to Pungo.

The farm will make a few changes to both their pumpkin patch and mazes to accommodate current distancing restrictions, but they will try to make the experiences as familiar as possible, just with some added safety features.

“It’s a little hard to determine density in a corn maze because you can have a hundred cars in the parking lot, but only 10 people in the maze,” said Cullipher.

Pumpkin picking began the last weekend of September and continues through the end of October. They hope for six active weekends for pumpkins this year. Currently the plan includes a pick-your-own experience in the patch or the option to choose pre-picked pumpkins at the stand for purchase.

Some changes this year, to adapt to no-contact sales, may include selling the pumpkins by size rather than weight. This will reduce the shared contact of items. Some seasoned farmers have mentioned that they used this method to sell pumpkins years ago.

In addition to agritourism events, farm stands in this area of the state continue to offer fall produce and decorations throughout October including greens, squashes and gourds, broccoli, potatoes, the last of the summer corn,

hay bales, pumpkins and bundled corn stalks. November offerings include Thanksgiving staples like collards and sweet potatoes. Several farms will offer December items like pre-cut trees, winter decorations and holiday experiences.

If Cullipher Farm has their Thanksgiving market after closing the regular farm stand at the end of October, they will also have preordered baked goods in addition to holiday produce. Customers can check their social media in mid-tolate October to see their offerings and plans.

“We strongly encourage that visitors check Facebook or the website www.cullipherfarm.com to check that the mazes are open,” said Cullipher. “Saturdays and Sundays we usually have a guest food truck.

In the 18th century, illuminations— the firing of guns and lighting of fireworks— celebrated major events such as the birthday of a reigning sovereign, military victories or the arrival of a new colonial governor. Instead of a single Sunday event, Colonial Williamsburg plans to hold Grand Illumination on three consecutive Saturdays: Each night, the city of Williamsburg will present a a fireworks demonstration over the Governor’s Palace. A limited number of guests with free Colonial Williamsburg reservations will enjoy a program including Yuletide music and pyrotechnics from 250 socially-distanced, marked-audience areas on the Palace Green, each with a group capacity of four to six people.

It’s a good bet that many will plan smaller holiday celebrations at home in order to avoid travel, large family gatherings or eating out in large groups. As a result, 2020 might present the first time some home cooks have hosted or taken on the responsibility for the bulk of the feast, which can potentially be a bit intimidating. Where to start? Let local restaurants, caterers, farms and small local food producers lend a hand in making your Thanksgiving spread the freshest and most convenient ever. Make some of your favorite menu items from scratch, and round out the meal with some prepared items and baked goods from local sources, so you and your guests will see your feast and the entire holiday weekend as an enjoyable pleasure and not a burden.

viewpoint Working Through COVID [ by jim carroll ]

As a child growing up outside Philadelphia, with many of my relatives living in and around Boston, I became well versed in the story of the Pilgrims, the Mayflower, Plymouth Rock and the first Thanksgiving. For me, this represented the start of America. When the Navy ordered me here in 1974, I quickly learned that my education and understanding was, shall we say, a tad lacking. The first English-speaking settlers landed in Jamestown, VA some 12 years earlier than the Pilgrims arrived in Plymouth, MA.

I also learned that these individuals came here to make a fortune in this new land—early entrepreneurs who literally risked their lives to find success.

It was touch-and-go for quite some time but, thanks to some very fortuitous breaks, they ultimately prevailed and brought a new product to the market, tobacco.

We have entrepreneurship in our DNA, our country, the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Hampton Roads region. We owe a good part of their success to the efforts of these first intrepid small-business owners. In America, unlike many other countries, we celebrate and treasure entrepreneurship.

Today, we cannot overstate the importance of entrepreneurship and small-business ownership in this region. The majority of the businesses in this region, as well as in the country, fall under the classification of small businesses. In 1801, a new chamber of commerce was established to assist the region’s small-business owners to achieve success with their ventures. This organization has, over time, grown to become the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, which now serves the citizens and small-business owners in the five southside cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach. From the beginning, the chamber’s staff has worked tirelessly on behalf of its membership and the region. The chamber’s primary goal sets the conditions that will enable the region’s businesses to achieve success.

One of the chamber’s key tools is the Small Business Development Center of Hampton Roads (SBDC), a program sponsored and supported by the chamber. The SBDC operates under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Virginia SBDC Network State Office at George Mason University. Since 1990, the center and its staff have provided technical assistance, training and access to information to the small-business owners in the 18 cities and counties of Hampton Roads and the Eastern

Small-business owners and entrepreneurs comprise the backbone of our region’s economy.

Not only do they contribute to the region’s Gross Domestic Product, they also take considerable risks in delivering the goods and services we need to enjoy the region’s tremendous quality of life. I speak from the experience of moving in and out of the region during my Navy career. Each time my family and I returned, the growth and improvements that had taken place

amazed us. Our small businesses fostered this.

Now the COVID-19 Pandemic has completely changed the way we conduct business in the marketplace.

Physical distancing and masks now provide the order of the day.

We’ve seen limits on occupancy levels, increased use and/or corresponding costs of PPE and other safety and cleaning measures.

We have a customer base totally shaken to the core by the constant barrage of bad news and the laserlike focus on the mortality rate.

We have had old business models completely upended. Small-business owners have faced challenges they have never experienced before.

The SBDC provides up-to-date and accurate information so our smallbusiness owners can make informed decisions and not just go with a “gut reaction.” We will remain a source of information and support throughout these trying times.

While the risks facing today’s small-business owner may pale in comparison to those faced by our first settlers, it is only prudent and correct that they have all the tools and support needed for success.

The chamber and the SBDC are, and will remain, here for them.

Many thanks to Jim Carroll for his thorough assessment of the strengths of our historical region. I’ve got a unique perspective on Tidewater. After graduating from Churchland High in 1976, I spent five years at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). I accepted a job as assistant editor for Astronomy magazine in Milwaukee, WI, and right after graduation, I moved to the Midwest. I spent three years there, followed by a year in Chicago, IL, and then the publishing company I worked for, called GuestInformant, relocated me to St. Louis.

In each city I witnessed a surge in economic development and progress, such as the opening of the Grand Avenue in downtown Milwaukee by the James K. Rouse company, which transformed a distressed area of downtown into a showplace of shopping, dining and offices.

In Chicago I enjoyed the resurgence of the Magnificent Mile, State Street—“that Great Street” as Sinatra referred to it in lyrics—and also the revitalization of the North End and Oak Street across from the beaches and the famous Drake Hotel.

In 1984, the Rouse Company planned a massive economic and urban renewal project in the blighted part of St. Louis around the old Union Station. By the time I moved there, the renovation started and I became very involved in promoting the new Omni Hotel and the lengthy list of brand-name retailers and restaurants leasing space in the shopping center. At the same time, Simon and Company started their work a few blocks away on what would become the gleaming and state-of-the-art St. Louis Center.

As luck would have it, I met Susie in St. Louis and a year or so later we moved back to Tidewater so I could head up The Virginia Travel Guide publication that ALDON Communications published under contract with the commonwealth. We married shortly thereafter in Centenary United Methodist Church on Cedar Lane in Portsmouth.

In 1990, ALDON relocated me to New York City to handle sales for

the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau’s “Big Apple Guide.”

The early 1990s in New York City were not for the faint of heart and we watched our Upper West Side neighborhood attempt to reverse the spiral of decay brought about by economic disparity. After moving downtown to a loft on Union Square in 1992, it heartened us to see the improvements of the old neighborhood made famous by Andy Warhol, Max’s Kansas City and the legacy of Greenwich Village.

The monthly payment on our rentstabilized 10-year lease for a full floor between Fifth Avenue and Broadway started at $2,000. When we left, the landlord could command the “then new” market rate of $15,000 a month for our old space! It’s safe to say that sometimes gentrification can displace long-time residents and it’s important to take that into consideration when economic development and civic improvements radically change the fabric of a neighborhood.

Our management consulting and media development business had taken off and opportunities on the West Coast beckoned. In 1996, we found ourselves in Seattle, where little companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Real Networks and InfoSpace had just started entering the mainstream vernacular. Over the next 20 years, we watched these tech giants transform sleepy Seattle into the power hub of today.

In all these cities, positive transformation was starting or underway that over time would improve the community and quality of life for its residents. It seems that I have a knack for being in a city on the cusp of these confluent changes—or “Zeitgeist Moments”—so with my experiences over the past 35 years it’s clear to me that Tidewater is on the verge of something big. Susie and I have lived here since 2016 and have observed all the tell-tale signs we saw in other cities and they bode well for us here.

an explosion in improved economic development and prosperity. You just need to understand the signs and seize the moment. The area was well on its way to enjoying one of the most prosperous years in several decades, but the near stand-still that COVID-19 created has only delayed the region’s success.

So many factors point to our long-term prosperity that, even though we cannot currently see the effects of Amazon HQ2 in Northern Virginia or how Pharrell Williams and his team have shone the spotlight on Tidewater, the reality points toward a confluence of events and forces that will shape the region for the next 50 years to come. The Rebuild! Virginia, GO Virginia and We’re Open initiatives, to name a few, have started formulating planning strategies shepherded by

the Hampton Roads Chamber and the 757 Alliance, among others, to help our communities emerge stronger and more resilient than before.

The Boulevard team looks forward to bringing our combined experience to bear to help nurture and preserve small business, create jobs, foster diversity and goodwill among our region’s leadership and provide advice based on experience.

day trips Destination: Cambridge, MD The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (CBBT) serves as the threshold to a timeless adventure. U.S. Route 13 North takes you over a four-lane, 20-milelong vehicular toll crossing of the lower Chesapeake Bay to the main highway on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

You’ll travel over a series of low-level trestles interrupted by two, milelong tunnels, finally rising high above the bay on tall bridges. The low-level trestles provide almost uninterrupted views of the Chesapeake Bay in all directions, sometimes with the addition of seabirds, dolphins and boats of all sizes from kayaks to cruise ships and aircraft carriers. If you glance off to the right, you may see cargo ships so behemoth they look like floating cities waiting like soldiers to enter, one-by one, into the channel.

Coming off the CBBT you see Fisherman Island, a barrier island of the Fisherman Island National Wildlife Refuge. For roughly the next 2.5 hours, U.S. 13 travels past Kiptopeke State Park and then numerous small, bayside towns like Cheriton, Eastville, Machipongo, Nassawadox, Exmore, Painter, Melfa and Olney until you reach the state line separating Virginia and Maryland. When you see the signs for Salisbury, you know you’re about to land at your destination in Cambridge, MD.

Eateries, unique shops and breweries freckle the downtown Cambridge area. RAR Brewing has a must-stop, must-order-an-IPA and must-orderanother-IPA kind of vibe. It sports an easy, cool atmosphere without even trying.

Housed in an old bowling alley and pool hall with local art hanging throughout the space, the location sports a 46-seat taproom with a handcrafted cedar bar top. They also offer outdoor seating and some killer eats.

We chose Ava’s Pizzeria & Wine Bar for a very late dinner. The staff treated us like old friends. The procession of dishes began with edamame seasoned with a barely-there, but oh-so-flavorful sticky, soy, sweet witchcraft. My husband had a flatbread pizza with spinach, sundried

tomatoes and meatballs. He became silent for 10 minutes. He’s a talker. I had to check if he was ok—his pizza was that darned good. My daughter and I each got a panini—melty mozzarella and pesto heaven with a thick slice of homegrown, juicy tomato to keep things in line. They have won the vote of “best pizza on the Eastern Shore” for years and have two locations: Cambridge and St. Michaels. We also noted their impressive wine and beer list.

Completely satisfied, fat-bellied and tired, we headed to our friends’ house on the Little Choptank Creek to dream salty-scented dreams and wait for first light to check the crab traps for keepers. In the morning as the mist lifted off the creek by our house, with coffee cup in hand, I sat on the dock and watched a commercial crab boat work its line. As the boat slowly moved down the trot line, every three feet a Maryland blue crab would rise like a spirit from the murky warm water. Refusing to give up its bait meal, it got scooped into a net and sorted. The watermen worked quietly and efficiently, never betraying their ancestors who worked the same waters years before.

Later, my husband and I stole away to visit St. Michaels, a dog-friendly and very artsy town. It made me feel right at home. The sherbet colors of the clapboard on shops and cafes with open-air dining in string-lighted alleys seemed both inviting and reminiscent of a town from my childhood, Mt. Gretna, PA, where creativity and a love for savoring a slower day reign paramount.

On a back road, we discovered Emily’s Produce, a farmers market with a meandering floor plan and many surprises that completely delighted the “eat local” foodie in me. The refrigerators held rainbow-hued veggie salads, local artisanal cheeses, huge chunks of crab meat in containers, pick-your-own flowers and a vast array of pies, baked on site. Emily’s also offers the popular Scottish Highland Creamery ice cream, produced in Oxford, MD—not far from Tilghman Island.

Founded in 1650, Tilghman Island is a quintessential waterside village built by the hard work of watermen who needed access to the bounty of the

bay and its surrounding tributaries.

They have harvested rockfish, with its snowy white flesh, oysters and snappy blue crabs here daily and for centuries.

Later, driving home south through the fields and quiet towns, and back across the CBBT, you have one last chance to open your car window and hear the cry of a gull and taste the salty air as you look to your right at an amazing sunset.

The Eastern Shore, Cambridge and its surrounding towns and waterways provide a fantastic quick getaway brimming with culture, fun places to eat and maritime history lessons to take home.
