nyone remember The Victorian newspaper?

Delivering it in its final year of existence (1976), was my very first job. That morphed into other paper routes — all of which I hated — but not because of the work they involved.

What broke my heart was the accompanying transformation of my gleaming little two-wheeler, which, when purchased, came with a dainty, white-straw basket. My father, who could build, solder or weld anything — but had no sense of artistry — scorned aesthetics as a poor cousin to functionality.

He found some cast off metal, disappeared into the basement and produced a newspaper-sized monstrosity that was then attached to the front of my bike. I couldn’t wait to find another job.

A few years later, I worked at a bookstore. Located at the time on Johnson Street, Griffin Books eventually moved into the spot in Market Square vacated by Munro’s Books (see story page 48). I won’t forget my first day on the job. Trying to make a good impression with the nervous earnestness of a 16-year-old, I waited as long as possible to take my first bathroom break.

“The lock is temperamental,” a staffer may have muttered as he waved me towards the washroom. Indeed. I immediately realized I was locked in, and it was at least 30 minutes before I was rescued, red-faced, from my first-day-on-thejob plight.

I had other jobs in Victoria. I spent years working summers and weekends at Nootka Court Deli, and even tried serving at a short-lived restaurant called Speakeasy.

There, on one of my first days, I had the memorable opportunity of serving a restaurant reviewer. Everything that could go wrong did, and I’m certain I was part of the restaurant’s demise.

All of the many women featured in Boulevard's special “Women Who Make A Difference” section undoubtedly

have a “first job” story to tell.

However, they’ve risen through the ranks to take on myriad roles and positions, many finding ways, as Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps says, to blend community and business.

Greater Victoria’s five female mayors discuss the crucial roles that local women play in our city in A World of Difference, the section's cover story (page 87).

Also check out our profile piece on Pat Elemans and UVic’s Gustavson School of Business — which, as it approaches its 25th anniversary — is making its mark both locally and internationally (page 54).

Tess Van Straaten talks to James McKenzie, co-owner and former CEO of Monk Office Supply, and Fran Hobbis, chair of the Downtown Victoria Business Association, is also profiled. Robert Moyes has his usual collection of not-to-miss events coming up in Victoria (page 79).

All this amounts to a host of good reads. And although I’m excited to share it with all our readers, I’m glad I don’t have to deliver it.

M

eeting Chris for the first time, one gets the feeling he’s from “away.”

He talks straight and fast, with an unreserved desire to know everything that’s going on — as if accustomed to having a finger firmly on the pulse.

Originally from Chicago, Chris moved to New York City in his early 20s to work on Wall Street.

I met the now 36-year-old for lunch at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, overlooking the dark grey and blue, stormy waters of Cadboro Bay. Across the bay, we could see his soon-to-be family home, designed by architect Franc D’Ambrosio and currently under construction.

We shared a few laughs, a mini cry over a story in the New York Times that blows apart any preconception on the huge capacity of the human heart, and mused on a shared perspective that moving to Victoria — while at the top of his game in an international arena — is quite possibly the riskiest move he’s ever made.

“Staying on Wall Street would have been so easy, so safe. When we (Chris and his financial cohort and wife Dixie) left, people thought we were insane — you just don’t do that. But it wears you down and it’s very hard to have a family life. The biggest take-away I’ve gotten from life so far is you have to take chances

But before they moved to Victoria to have their first child a few years ago, they spent nearly two years exploring the globe. Africa, Thailand, Nepal, Japan … the list goes on.

“I think the greatest thing about travel is that it makes you challenge your beliefs. Maybe you’re wrong about something; it grows your empathy. Travel has shaped who I am [by] seeing how other people live.

Even though we are all very different, (language, culture) we all want the same things at the core. What binds us together is so much greater than what separates us.”

Complementing the timeless colour palette are modern, yet classical lines in the all the elements of furniture, tile, carpet, lighting and millwork.

ere on Vancouver Island, it’s no surprise the local landscape is a common source of inspiration for designers. For interior designer Sheri Peterson, it also speaks to the importance of the colours with which we surround ourselves.

“Projects are inspired by and often begin with colour,” Sheri says. “It has an interaction with humans on all levels so I choose colours precisely.”

Working with design associates Kyla Bidgood and Julia Roemer for the initial design concepts, Sheri created a timeless re-design of the hotel lobby of the Chateau Victoria, its classic colour palette inspired by the West Coast landscape of East Sooke Park.

The neutral, restful background colours pop with brighter fabrics, accessories and artwork. Gone is the outdated pink marble tile in favour of a neutral travertine which will stand the test of time, while the trim around the wall and pillar panels is silver leafed by a local artisan.

Colours and styles aren’t the only things that benefit from updating. At the Chateau Victoria, a redesigned front desk now accommodates modern technology and is more functional during busy checkout times.

Sometimes it’s another element that provides the initial inspiration, Sheri says, pointing to the a dentist’s office expansion and re-design completed in 2013.

“We spent a great deal of time sourcing the flooring and that was our jumping off point for the other finishes. We added some sparkle with the lighting and reception desk tile, and for reupholstering the waiting room chairs we found great fabric that makes a playful, modern statement.”

And in the case of a kitchen redesign, where the homeowners were specific about their countertop requirements, finding the perfect selection came first.

“The other colours and finishes came together once the countertop was chosen and the homeowners are so thrilled with their new kitchen space!”

or 23 years, Interior Designer Sheri Peterson has built her reputation on relationships developed with clients, suppliers and trades.

With a portfolio that includes both residential and commercial work (and even a Canadian Coast Guard ice breaker ship!) her strengths are rooted in those relationships, but also in her ability to envision how a space is used.

“I get how families live, how moms juggle, how busy houses should flow. I understand the importance of a hotel lobby easing traffic flow during check-out time and how staff and diners move around a busy restaurant,” she says.

“That understanding and experience also helps me work

quickly – I spend a lot of time thinking on my feet at a job site!”

It all begins with communication.

“I especially listen to the clients first and try to make the decision-making process as quick and easy as possible for them. I also believe in a collaborative approach as everyone from the home or business owner to contractor and tradespeople have expertise to share. We all contribute to complete a successful job,” she says.

“I love working with clients who have strong beliefs and conviction in who they are, where they’re going, and what they want,” Sheri says. “It makes the completed project a reflection of who they are.”

This Oak Bay home built by Seba Construction suited a transitional design, recognizing its older, traditional neighbourhood, but also the more contemporary goals of the homeowners, Amy explains. “We put an emphasis on the kitchen and the little details that set this home apart from others on the market.”

Traditional mouldings and wainscoting have a more contemporary feel with a simpler profile, for example. The cabinetry and appliances continue the more modern look. Recognizing the needs of busy families, the design also introduced conveniences like the smart home Control 4 automated systems and features both beautiful and practical.

“The butler’s pantry is a great addition on the main floor, as it can serve as space to have a home bar or additional serving area for the family. And because we wanted the look of marble without the hassle, we chose a Cambria Quartz material for the countertops that is non-porous, making it both stain- and scratchresistant.”

ometimes a single element can inspire simply stunning renovation. in this kitchen from maC Renovations, the copper hood and sink detail provided the perfect starting point from which the rest of the design naturally flowed, from a mosaic travertine backsplash with hints of deep copper to luxurious granite counters.

Here, dramatic streaks of the Bordeaux echo in the island – in Benjamin moore’s “elderbury,” with a vintage, hand-rubbed finish. the island beautifully accents the kitchen cabinetry, a custom-stained knotty alder with hand glazing and oil-rubbed bronze hardware. in another kitchen, the inspired re-design began with the distinctive Blue Pearl granite. “the clients had the sample chosen when i showed up. it was a love affair already in motion!” says maC interior designer terri Wills.

Because the best renovations enhance both feel and functionality, maC strives to understand how homeowners use their space, as well as their design preferences. “the first step is getting to know your clients, including their vision and motivation for the renovation,” terri explains. “i often refer to the kitchen as the ‘tool box for your home.’ it must not only stand up to the wear and tear of time and provide the best function possible, but also represent the homeowners’ dream for their home.” another design moved the range from the back wall to the peninsula, leaving the bay window for seating and views. two cooks now move freely around the kitchen, one using the back burner from behind the peninsula, while the other works with the oven and front burners – total teamwork!

While homeowners are easily absorbed in the excitement of a renovation, kitchens have more details than any area of the home, so it’s vital to slow down and create a solid design. Condominium renovations, for example, must also consider units and common areas surrounding the workspace: creativity and experience are essential! a

The floors were also saved and patched where necessary.

esigned by architect Percy Leonard James and built in 1920 for wealthy shipbuilder Harry Frederick Bullen, this Rockland character home showcases many classical design elements, including a complex multi-hipped roofline, dormers and a porte-cochère.

Such design features characteristic of the era continue inside the heritage property, so when the homeowners were planning a kitchen remodel, it was essential to retain the home’s character.

Through careful attention to detail, the skilled Thomas Philips Woodworking craftsmen retained many of the unique mouldings, for example, and were able to replicate those that couldn’t be saved. Similarly, installing leaded glass detailing in the upper cabinets echoed the glass found elsewhere in the home.

The warm white cabinets contrast beautifully with the wood floors and incorporate varying cabinet and counter depths to create visual interest. However, because the homeowners love to entertain, they also wanted the kitchen to be both functional and inviting as a place where guests would relax and visit during dinner parties and barbecues. The result is ample space for cooking, easy access to the outdoor patio area and plenty of room for guests around the long central island.

With ample storage, the kitchen incorporates both cabinets, drawers and display space, with a separate serving station near the patio.

Environmental awareness was also important, so efficient modern touches include LED lights throughout, plus local products like Island-quarried marble, energy-efficient appliances, and recycling and composting centres.

The result is a breathtaking, yet ultimately functional kitchen at the heart of this beautiful heritage home.

EHIND A TALL, TRIM HEDGE on a quiet James Bay street, a proud printer practices his venerable craft on machines older than himself. This is the workplace of Don Allen, 64, an accountant by training who prefers these days to push paper rather than crunch numbers. For 20 years, he has run Winfield Printing from the tidy-but-crowded basement of his home.

No Luddite, his computer's memory is stocked with all the latest gizmos for flashy desktop publishing. He switches easily from the desktop age to the mechanical, a century falling away in a blink as he fires up machines manufactured in the Victorian era.

When printing can be done with a flick across a keyboard, Allen prefers the tactile experience of placing paper in a machine, turning a crank, holding it as it emerges from between the presses like a newborn to the light. It is slow, time consuming and a bit expensive — a throwback in this age of instant gratification. He would not do it any other way: “The ink gets in your blood,” he explains.

Allen, who was born in Winnipeg, displays a quiet, understated sense of humour in the Prairie style. His LinkedIn profile picture includes a line drawing in which the upturned corners of his mouth hint at an inner joke.

He lists his education as “the university of hard knocks and unforeseen consequences.”

He describes his printing machines like another man might talk about a collection of valuable roadsters.

Over here is a hand-operated press “from the late 1800s, probably used in a church” to print bulletins and notices.

Over there is a Chandler & Price letterpress machine, a C&P as it is known to aficionados, a “pressman's favourite,” manufactured in Cleveland in 1904. Allen searched Western Canada without success for years before spotting an advertisement for this press in Portland, Oregon. He loaded it on a trailer, drove it north to Victoria, and then disassembled

it to get it through the door, where it was reassembled. In the old days, a printer had to be part mechanic.

Under the stairs is a Vandercook hand-proof press from 1931, devised by a pipe-smoking printer from Illinois named Robert Oatman Vandercook. The machine at Winfield Printing was used for decades in a Chicago composing room to print proofs for newspaper articles before publication. Allen had it shipped west and rebuilt.

Letterpress is the term used to describe printing from a raised surface by pressing a letter onto paper. The technique dominated printing through the first half of the 20th Century until supplanted by offset printing in which an inked image is transferred (or “offset”) from a plate onto a surface. Offset is quicker and cheaper; letterpress was rendered obsolete.

“It's not commercially viable,” Allen said, “and hasn't been for 50 years.” Which is why he does it.

He has an offset printer, too, but it is the letterpress machines that excite him.

Allen prints business cards, greeting cards and wedding invitations, as well as the occasional book cover. Late last year, he hand-produced 1,300 covers of “Around the World on Minimum Wage,” a memoir by Victoria writer and filmmaker Andrew Struthers published

by New Star Books of Vancouver. The glorious black-andgold cover, featuring a stylized compass, was designed by Victoria graphic designer Clint Hutzulak of Rayola Creative.

It was printed in black and gold on a red card stock known as Mohawk Via Felt, part of the odd language practiced by oldtime printers like Allen, who personally touched each cover as it went through the Vandercook.

“I get a buzz after I pull one off and it looks so nice,” he said. A hand-crafted book. What will they think of next.

t the age of 80, Jim Munro, founder of Munro’s Books, decided it was time to retire from the bookselling business. But it was not time to retire Munro’s Books, a Victoria institution for nearly 51 years.

So in the spring of 2014, Munro handed over the business to four long-time employees. Store manager Jessica Walker, senior buyer Carol Mentha, comptroller Sarah Frye and operations manager Ian Cochran suddenly had “store owner” added to their titles. Under the terms, the new owners would pay Munro rent for the 4,500-square foot operation; but they were basically given the store and its massive inventory.

They say “shock” was their immediate reaction, but once they absorbed the news of this generous gift, they understood it.

“It was a very personal decision,” says Walker. “I don’t think he would have wanted an outsider to come in. He wanted people he trusted to be caretakers of the business.”

Mentha says it was a relief too, “knowing that it wasn’t going to close, it wasn’t going to be taken over by some chain or outsider and that jobs were secure.”

By the time the news was made public three months later, the new owners and staff were gearing up for what would be a busy fall and Christmas season. Now, relieved by the success of the past few months, the four are finally finding time to meet and plan — although, they laughingly confess, their decision-making process is often based on “What would Jim do?”

Books will always come first Things may not appear to have changed much over the years at Munro’s, perhaps because it has spent the last three decades in the same beautiful, historic building — designed in 1909 for the Royal Bank of Canada — on Government Street, which Munro bought in 1984.

However, Walker says, the business did evolve under Munro and previous manager Dave Hill, citing differences in everything from the use of social media to how they market the store.

As with any business, owners constantly have to look at what’s working and what’s not working, and not be afraid to make changes.

“But, that said, part of our mission is to be true to Jim’s philosophy that the store is first and foremost a full service bookstore. It’s not full of yoga mats and candles.

We sell a lot more merchandise than we used to, but it’s just the way the business is. Books will always come first,” says Walker.

Between the four of them, they have nearly 100 years of experience at Munro’s.

Cochran was hired in 1984 following the closing of his own Richard’s Records store. At that time, Munro’s had two locations, one on Fort Street and one in Market Square, where Cochran started out. He moved to the Government Street location, when the two stores amalgamated later that year.

Mentha came to Munro’s a year later, after working at Ivy’s Books. Ironically, when the previous manager of Munro’s left the store to buy Ivy’s Books, Mentha was laid off from Ivy’s, and promptly hired at Munro’s.

Frye, who says she has “generations of books in her 52

blood,” worked at Book Warehouse in Vancouver, and moved to Victoria to manage the franchise here. Later, she worked a stint at Pic a Flic and then returned to the book business when Munro hired her in 1992.

Another “book business kid,” Walker was manager of Blackberry Books in Vancouver, and also worked at two other Vancouver bookstores, before the housing market sent her and her husband to Victoria in 2000.

She was hired at Munro’s right away.

“I didn’t have a place to live, but I had a job.”

Munro’s Books is successful at a time when many independent bookstores are not.

“We go way further than a lot of businesses, not just bookstores, trying to help customers,” explains Mentha, adding, “We’re all really friendly and offer a great selection [of a variety of books].”

Business as usual In addition to having worked at Munro’s for a long time, the staff members have their own clientele, or “their own special people,” as Walker puts it.

For example, she says, “Carol’s got quite a collection of people who come in regularly and say, ‘Carol, what should I read next?’”

With the shock long worn off, the owners have felt the weight of their new roles, but are grateful for the presence of co-owners.

Walker describes waking up some nights with “3:30 a.m. lists” popping into her head, but says, “It’s incredibly nice to have a group of people [available], when you feel like bouncing ideas off somebody.”

Frye’s focus is financial. “The great thing about there being four of us, is that the pressure is divided among us all.”

And looking to the future, Cochran says, “I would like to find the time to train some other people to do what I do here.”

The best part for owners and staff has been the positive customer reaction.

As manager and public face of Munro’s, Walker says, “I’ve really enjoyed the amazing response from our customers. People felt it was such a generous gesture on Jim’s part, both for the staff and for the city. So to be on the receiving end of that for most of the fall — we’re basically feeling the love. That has been so rewarding.”

So, it’s not only business as usual at Munro’s Books, but it appears that it will be business as usual for some time to come.

at Elemans is a woman who makes things happen. Holding a leadership position at UVic’s Gustavson School of Business, she is a driving force behind the school’s growing foothold in the international business community, as well as an inspiration to women venturing into that world.

It’s no surprise that her graduates are as ambitious as she is. Pat has been immersed in the business world from a young age.

“My dad was an entrepreneur so business was a big part of my upbringing. He was insistent that we do something in that field.”

She studied business management at the University of Lethbridge, did an MBA at York University and, in 2010, took on the position of Assistant Dean External Relations at Gustavson.

Elemans is not simply book smart. Her strength and intelligence has helped propel Gustavson forward.

Integral in helping to raise more than $20 million for the school, Pat also helped establish a program that draws students from around the world.

“Our school is unique. We offer a fully immersed program with small cohorts. There’s a comradery among the students. It’s a close learning community and the sense of spirit is quite incredible. We don’t have traditional specializations like finance or accounting. All of our disciplines are taught in an integrated manner.”

Gustavson’s exchange program is the most subscribed to in the country. Almost 80 per cent of the school’s students spend some time studying abroad, compared to the national average of three to four per cent. With around 80 exchange partners in 40 different countries, students are immersed in a non-English speaking environment.

“We only send four or five students to each partner school. We don’t want them hanging out with other Canadians. We want them hanging out with people from that country.”

“Academia is a good place for women. About 45 per cent of the faculty members are women. I don’t think there are as many barriers in academia anymore. It’s based on credentials. It’s a flexible, supportive environment, but also intellectually stimulating and challenging.”

The number of women studying business is also relatively high at Gustavson with just over 50 per cent in the undergraduate program and around 30-35 per cent in the graduate programs.

Once they graduate, women don’t fall into any particular niche or business sector.

Under Elemans’ leadership, Gustavson has had its share of successful female graduates. With the school celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, it’s established a Top 25 to Watch campaign. Among its outstanding alumni is Jennifer Mackenzie, COO for Vancouver Coastal Health. After graduating from the MBA program, Mackenzie racked up numerous awards including Canada’s Outstanding Young Health Executive of the Year and the Gold Apple Award for Top Innovator.

Another to watch is Michaela Tokarski who coestablished Coastal Contacts while she was still doing her MBA. It went on to become the largest online contact retailer in the world. A more recent graduate, Jane Zhu, has started a company called Dragon Pass out of China, which provides travelling business executives access to concierge services and top end airport amenities across the globe. She’s just signed a deal with London’s Heathrow Airport. “She’s very entrepreneurial. It’s very exciting to see.”

“Kim Cope is another grad who has founded a company called Early Entrepreneurs. They go into middle school classrooms and teach basic business, cash flow, et cetera. They then give the students $100 and the goal is for the students to start a business and turn it into $1,000.

The money then goes to a partner charity.”

Elemans’ own drive to succeed does not appear to be faltering. She is a director on the board of the Women’s Enterprise Centre, an amazing resource offering support to women wanting to start a business. She sits on numerous boards and has a collection of awards from UVic for innovation, service and outstanding contributions. She’s also part of an informal group called the League of Extraordinary Women.

“There are about 15 of us. We meet once a month and talk about life and work. It’s hugely beneficial.”

She adds, “I have two big goals right now. One is to have an extension built on the school. We’ve more than

Victoria pubs embrace gastronomy  By cinda chavich

y first encounter with “gastropubs” was in the UK — posh little spots in the British countryside with ambitious menus, and even Michelin stars.

This destination dining, often alongside luxury accommodations, offered the chance to spot an A-list star popping down for a pint, or at least a celebrity chef.

We may not have the same prolific pub culture in Canada, but the gastropub idea has crossed the pond, and is growing alongside our love of locallybrewed craft beer.

And here in Victoria, chefs are stepping up to make sure that our pub grub meets the quality of the ever-changing products on tap.

A case in point is one of Victoria’s newest public houses, The Guild Freehouse. Set in an historic building downtown, with multiple taps featuring a rotating series of local craft beer, this modern gastropub was inspired by the trend that chef and co-owner Sam Benedetto saw evolving in Britain’s pubs.

“British pubs had much the same problem that we have had in our pubs — sub par food,” says Benedetto, who spent four years cooking in London before returning to Victoria to open The Guild in 2013.

“When I moved back to the island, I was wowed by the quality of craft beer,” he says. “And though we had the brew pubs serving good food with their own beer, nobody had all of this high quality craft beer under one roof.”

Benedetto took a page from the English gastropubs, “serving traditional food, and making it

delicious,” by sourcing fresh ingredients from local farms and making everything, even bread and sausages, in house. The core of the menu is traditional British fare — Scotch eggs, bangers and mash, Sunday roasts and curries — with a signature “fry up” of Cumberland-style sausage, blood pudding, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, bake beans and eggs for weekend brunch.

At The Bard & Banker pub, the décor is as elaborate as chef Richard Luttman’s new menu — elevated beyond the burgers and wings of yore.

Along with this historic bank building’s elegant coffered ceilings, art nouveau lamps and bulbous brass taps lining the long bar, the food lives up to modern gastropub quality.

“It’s almost more bistrostyle,” says Luttman, who redesigned the pub menu a year ago, replacing the bounty of burgers and pizza with new dishes, including fresh local oysters, sweet potato lasagna and warm quinoa salad.

The new burger offering is beef only — the patty made with chuck, short rib and brisket, and served on a brioche bun. Fish and chips, sacrosanct on a pub menu, remains, but is now made with a crunchy potato chip crust. The kitchen also has a new rotisserie, turning out tender chicken that’s offered with side dishes like roasted cauliflower with a tahini lime dressing, creamed leeks or sautéed kale.

“I’m trying to bring the fresh, local, seasonal idea to the pub menu,” says Luttman.

While the city’s longtime brewpubs have always focused on creating local cuisine to match their in-house brews, the gastropub trend has led to more innovative menus there, too.

products, from Fry’s bread and 63 Acres Natural Beef to Outlandish Shellfish and Cowichan Bay pasta, for his seasonal offerings.

“We’re a pub, so we have to offer a burger, wings and fish and chips,” says Milne, “ but we want to push the envelope.”

His fish and chips are made with gluten-free Panko crumbs and lemon zest. Dishes like crispy Humboldt squid with rouille or a New York steak the size of a small roast, with bone marrow mashed potatoes on the side, are definitely a step above traditional pub fare. Milne says he cooks with Canoe beer and only serves Ocean Wise seafood.

At Spinnakers, the pioneering brewpub that launched the craft brewing movement here 30 years ago, good food has always been part of the package.

“Our clientele wanTs good quality comfort food, high quality pub grub with a twist — that’s what makes this a gastropub.”

“The menu’s definitely always been progressive — [owner] Paul Hadfield is a real visionary,” says chef Ali Ryan, noting Hadfield rebranded Spinnaker’s as a “gastro” brew pub in 2002.

Today, Ryan is one of the most innovative chefs in the pub world, entirely committed to sourcing seasonal, Vancouver Island products and using the beer — and the remains of the brewing process — in her cuisine.

“We just released an oyster stout and had Hollywood oysters from Cortez Island that were boiled in the wort,” she says. “So we shucked 1,200 wort-braised oysters, and now I’m using that oyster meat in chowder, and whipped into a beer-braised oyster dip.”

Ryan’s ingredients are truly seasonal. In winter, it’s cabbage, kale, potatoes and leeks — with cabbage and red onions, braised in their own malt vinegar, standing in for 62

tomatoes on the pub beef and vegetarian burgers.

At Spinnakers, beer with food, and beer in food, has long been a daily practice, whether it’s the beer-braised mussels, a beer bread, beer-flavored truffle or fish batter made with live brewer’s yeast.

“Pub stands for public house — for the public and by the public,” Ryan says. “Our clientele wants good quality comfort food, high quality pub grub with a twist — that’s what makes this a gastropub.”

1/4 cup (50 ml) shallots 1/3 cup (75 ml) white wine 1½ tsp (7 ml) white wine vinegar 1 2/3 (400 ml) cup milk 1/4 (50 ml) cup slivered white onion 1 bay leaf Pinch ground cloves 1/4 cup (50 ml) unsalted butter 1/4 cup (50 ml) flour, all purpose 1 Tbsp (15 ml) Dijon mustard 1/2 cup (125 ml) Fontina cheese — grated 2½ Tbsp (32 ml) Parmesan — grated 1/3 cup (75 ml) plain cream cheese 2½ tsp (12 ml) chopped fresh tarragon 2 tsp (10 ml) fresh chopped chives 1/2 tsp (2 ml) salt 3/4 cup (200 ml) cleaned and cooked Dungeness crab meat To garnish: breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan and chopped chives Peel and finely chop the shallots. In a small pan, combine the shallots, white wine and vinegar.

Bring to a boil over medium high heat and simmer until reduced by 90 per cent. The shallots should be almost dry, but not quite.

In a separate saucepan, heat the milk with the onion, bay leaf and ground cloves over mediumhigh heat until the milk just begins to simmer. Turn

off heat and steep for 12 minutes, then strain, reserving the milk and discarding the onion and bay leaf.

In a heavy saucepan, melt the butter over medium-low heat, add the flour and whisk together to form roux. Cook the roux over a low heat for 2-3 minutes. Slowly add the infused milk, whisking well to prevent lumps. Once all the milk has been incorporated, add the salt and cook the béchamel on low heat for 12 minutes until thickened.

Stir in the Dijon mustard, the three cheeses, shallot reduction, and the tarragon and chives. Mix until cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth, then stir in the cooked Dungeness crab meat. Spoon into four individual, ovenproof serving dishes (or one larger baking dish). Sprinkle with bread crumbs and finely grated Parmesan cheese and brown under broiler. Garnish with finely chopped chives. Serve with slices of fresh, warm baguette.

Makes 3 cups (four 3/4-cup portions).

Sprinkle in the flour, stir and cook for a further 5 minutes. Turn heat up high and add stock and beer. Stir until stew begins to boil and thicken, about 10 minutes. Add the salt, pepper, rosemary and bay leaves, reduce heat to medium low and simmer 15 minutes, or until vegetables are soft when pierced with a knife. Stir in the peas, adjust seasoning and serve with dumplings, soda bread or toasted baguette.

5 free run eggs 3/4 lb (300 g) ground Highland beef 1 Tbsp (15 ml) finely chopped fresh parsley 1 tsp (5 ml) finely chopped fresh rosemary 1 heaping tsp (5-6 mL) Dijon mustard 1 tsp (5 ml) dried thyme 1 pinch red chili flakes 1 tsp (5 ml) salt 1 pinch fresh cracked pepper For the breading: 1/4 cup (50 ml) all-purpose flour 2 to 3 eggs, whisked 1/2 cup (125 ml) bread crumbs Canola oil In a saucepan, cover 5 eggs with cold water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium low and simmer for exactly 4 min; then put eggs straight into a bowl of iced water and let cool for at least 10 min.

Peel the eggs. Put the flour into a small bowl and roll the eggs until dusted all over.

In a bowl, combine ground beef with parsley, 64

rosemary, mustard, thyme, chile flakes, salt and pepper and mix to combine. Divide the beef mixture into golf ball-sized pieces.

Place a piece of the beef mix into the palm of your hand and flatten it slightly. Place the floured, peeled egg into the middle of the mix in your palm, slowly push the mix out and around and evenly wrap egg.

Roll in the rest of the flour to coat. Put the whisked eggs into a small bowl and the bread crumbs into another bowl. Dip the wrapped egg into the whisked egg and then roll in the breadcrumbs until fully coated.

Preheat the oven to 350˚F. In a deep-sided saucepan (large enough to comfortably fit all the eggs), add about 4 inches of canola oil. Heat the oil to 300˚F/150˚C (or until a drop of water will sizzle in it).

With a slotted spoon carefully lower the wrapped eggs into the hot oil. Fry the eggs all over by gently stirring them every 30 seconds or so, until they are evenly golden brown and crispy. This should take about 4 minutes. Carefully remove the balls with a slotted spoon and place on paper towel to absorb some of the excess oil.

Place the eggs on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 5 minutes. Remove, cool for a couple of minutes and then slice in half. The meat should be fully cooked through and the yolk should be just a little bit runny. Don’t fret if the yolk has set, your eggs will still be delicious — it just means that the oil was a bit too hot.

Serve the Scotch eggs with your favourite mustard, fresh baguette and some malt vinegar pickled onions or cabbage (see recipe below).

Malt Vinegar Pickled Vegetables: 1 cup (250 ml) thinly sliced BC grown red onions or red cabbage (or both) 1/4 cup (50 ml) water 1.4 cup (50 ml) Spinnakers Malt Vinegar (my favourite is IPA vinegar, it’s bright and a bit citrusy, but choose your own favourite) 1 Tbsp (15 ml) white sugar 1 pinch salt Bring all the ingredients to a boil and simmer until the onions are transparent and the cabbage is soft.

Stir occasionally. Cool and serve.

Back in the pie factory space, the Dahlgrens were lucky to complete one or two sails a week. Now, at the Harbour Road facility, they can churn out three mainsails a week.

“There’s a lot of bigger lofts around but many of them are not purpose built: they have columns running through the middle or there’s other things. So for this size we’re fighting quite a bit above our weight class,” he added. “We’re finding ourselves to be more efficient here.”

With offices in Sidney and Bellingham, UK Sailmakers Northwest is the region’s single largest employer in the business. The company is a strong supporter of sailing clubs, regattas and education initiatives across the region, and its market reach extends across Western Canada, down to Montana and Idaho and as far north as Alaska.

In an economic age that’s hollowed out the North American manufacturing sector, the sail-making sector is moving forth on a beam reach. When they bought the company in 2011, the Dahlgrens sought a taste of an exciting business that combined their love for sailing with traditional craftsmanship and cutting edge design.

Thanks in part to their new space, UKNW’s Sidney site is at the forefront of the boom. Orders are up, research and development is thriving, and word has begun to get around.

award-winning architectural firm with offices on Vancouver Island and the mainland.

David Poiron and Ben Checkwitch met as students in 1990. They’ve since joined forces to produce work for gallery spaces, multi-unit residential buildings, a church, retail spaces and private homes. In 2011, the team completed work on the iconic Nanaimo cruise ship terminal.

“This is our first sail loft,” Checkwitch said during a site tour. “I can tell you one thing; this is the largest sail loft in the area, that big floor that we’re looking at right now, that’s all sail loft.”

Checkwitch stands on the lot’s front yard, looking towards enormous windows that span the building’s entire ground floor. The workshop’s wooden floor glistens like a freshly buffed gymnasium awaiting the squeak of sneakers.

To complement the neighbourhood’s marine industrial-residential character, CPA incorporated two airy living spaces above the main floor.

“We’re trying to pick up what’s going on in the residential part of the neighbourhood, because this site is at an intersection of residential and industrial areas. The building really is a marriage of those two uses.”

Large sliding doors give residents a view of the marina below. A comforting ocean harbour breeze fills the loft’s cross laminated panels, while red steel beams and concrete walls celebrate the building’s industrial roots,

“We like the idea of this big space with multiple levels and multiple layers,” Checkwitch said.

The multiplicity of horizontal planes on the inside are rotated 90 degrees on the building’s exterior, where layers of corrugated metal — similar to the siding found on a simple marine shed — envelope the building like a procession of sails on the starting line.

As the sailmakers on the inside craft towering surfaces woven from materials old and new, CPA has transformed a building material once associated with the drab and the austere into an intriguing multifaceted cloak.

“We wanted to use that material in a more refined way.

The perforated metal lets us control shade, lighting and privacy,” he said. “There’s this idea of layers, there’s this idea of depth to the building; it’s different, reflective and transparent, depending on the lighting condition or where you are standing.”

Because of the building’s exposure to passing traffic, passers-by are tempted to peer inside and watch the sailmakers at work. The exposure harkens to the era where workers might have lined the shoreline to ply their trade, adding vibrancy to the neighbourhood.

“The fact that you can see through those layers is surprising; it’s no longer just a flat plane. It becomes more interesting and more substantial.”

Because modernist architecture tends to emphasize the plain, the flat and the austere, Checkwitch feels that introducing a layered effect and multiple dimensions offers a depth missing from so much of today’s design.

“This sail loft is an effort to reintroduce a richness that we feel is sometimes missing in modern architecture.”

Given the impact on UKNW staff morale and the company’s bottom line, Checkwitch Poiron’s approach has already begun to make waves.

A BLAST OF BROADWAY Few people get to experience Broadway musicals as often as they’d like, so the Victoria-based Canadian College of Performing Arts makes it easy with its evermore-popular collaborations with the Victoria Symphony.

Guaranteed to be the most energetic “pop concert” of 2015, Broadway Lights features the more than 60 CCPA students in a medley of toe-tapping tunes from various musicals, from Oklahoma to Phantom of the Opera. “The symphony provides the music and we supply the singing, dancing and acting,” explains Darold Roles, artistic and education director of the CCPA. “The show is fully costumed and staged, and the students just sing the heck out of the music,” he adds.

This is the sixth time they have performed with the VS, and feedback is always incredibly enthusiastic.

“Audiences rarely get a chance to hear 60 singers doing a Broadway spectacular, and our students are some of the most talented in the country,” says Roles.

The CCPA is one of the very top performing arts colleges in Canada, with grads working from Stratford to London’s West End. “At least 90 per cent of our graduates get professional work,” Roles adds. “And directors love working with them, not only because they’re talented, but because they instill a real work ethic.”

Aside from classic tunes like “Oh What a Beautiful Morning,” the show will feature a few ‘50s rock songs by the legendary Lieber & Stoller, highlights from the recent Broadway hit Smokey Joe’s Café (which the CCPA is performing in its entirety in a two-week run in April in its own in-house theatre).

What if you threw a kegger and 4,000 people showed up? That’s the pleasurably daunting prospect facing beer scribe Joe Wiebe, co-founder of Victoria Beer Week. The nine-day celebration debuted last year, with 14 varied events — all of which involved beer and most of which sold out. “It was a huge success … we actually made a little money, which is unusual for any first-time festival,” says Wiebe. This year there are over 20 events, ranging from an educational seminar on the history of beer (including samples!) to a night devoted to tasting so-called sour beers, a traditional tipple from Belgium that has only recently attracted the attention of local brewers. According to Wiebe, neophytes should check out the “cask nights” at the Victoria Public Market that bookend the festival. “It’s a chance to sample a wide variety of the incredible craft beers that are made locally or on the mainland,” says Wiebe. He also recommends the five-course Brewmaster’s Brunch and the selfexplanatory Beer, Pizza, More Beer and Beer, Cheese, More Beer evenings. According to Wiebe, the BC appetite for handcrafted beer has increased threefold to 20 per cent of the market in just the last seven years. “And we haven’t reached Peak Beer yet,” he adds. “Demand just keeps growing.”

Originally from the Central African country of Cameroon, Pulchérie Mboussi spent 20 years in Quebec City before moving to Victoria in 2010. Her primary goal was to improve her English skills, but while studying tourism event planning, her class project seemed so promising in theory, that she started a non-profit society in order to launch Africa Fest two years ago. That was enough of a success that she is now debuting the four-day Afro-Latin Rhythms & Dances Festival. “I like presenting what is beautiful about African culture, and I needed a new event,” explains the vivacious Mboussi. “The idea

is to learn African and Latin dance styles and rhythms during the day, and then participate in ‘social dancing’ at night.” A lot of focus will be on Kizomba, a sensual dance originating in Angola. Other dances to be featured include Bachata, Semba, and Caribbean Zouk. “But I’m a planner, not a dance teacher,” laughs Mboussi, who reached out to longtime Victoria dance instructor Bernard Henin to help organize that side of things. Henin specializes in Cuban salsa but has expanded to teach Zumba in the last few years. “Pure African dance has never been popularized until now, and it’s lovely to see the convergence of African, Latin and Caribbean dances,” Henin says. Adding considerable sizzle is a champion dancer named Djks Vasco, a Paris-based master of Kizomba and Semba. “Vasco will be teaching and is also a featured performer at the Saturday night gala,” adds Mboussi. “There’s only room for a hundred people, so it’s a good idea to pre-register.”

WAITING FOR SAMUEL BECKETT It’s been more than two decades since Waiting For Godot has been performed in Victoria, and doubtless many theatre lovers are eager to see what the consistently impressive Blue Bridge company will do with a play that is often rated a supreme masterpiece. Premiered in Paris 62 years ago, Godot is categorized as Theatre of the Absurd; it’s an existential tragicomedy about two men waiting in vain on a country road for someone who never shows up. The play’s elemental minimalism has resulted in a wide variety of interpretations, from religious to psychoanalytic, and playwright Samuel Beckett was notoriously opaque about the underlying themes of Godot. “The play asks strong, powerful questions rather than providing answers,” says director Jacob Richmond. “Beckett asks you to do a lot of thinking about what it means.” The play’s opening 20 minutes have a vaudevillian quality, with the lead characters Vladimir and Estragon behaving like Laurel and Hardy. According to Richmond, himself a noted playwright and actor, the challenge is to balance that farcical humour with Godot’s morose and sardonic aspects. “I think I can hit the sweet spot between tragedy and comedy,” he says.

“Plus I’ve got a great cast.” Richmond has seen several productions of Godot over the years, and admits to being obsessed with it while in theatre school. “I don’t think it’s an allegory about God … the waiting is the important part,” he adds. “It captures an essential human longing, and the writing is very beautiful. Godot is still very relevant.”

Now 81 years old, Scottish-born David Rifat has had a remarkable double career, both as a practising artist and as an influential teacher (in Europe, California and, later, at the University of Toronto).

He and his wife moved to Victoria in 2002, where he has kept a low profile. Then he wandered into Couch Gallery and fell into fruitful discussion with assistant manager Blythe Scott, a fellow artist and fellow ĂŠmigrĂŠe from Scotland. Turns out that Rifat still keeps busy in his studio, often doing pencil sketches of nudes. Fifteen of those drawings are now featured in his first-ever local exhibition, which has just opened at Couch. According to Scott, figurative art is more of a core artistic discipline in Europe than in North America, and she is curious how the drawings will go over in a town dominated by landscape paintings. “There is a certain immediacy to David’s style, and urgency in his line,â€? says Scott. “He’s after the essence of the pose rather than some kind

Music listeners have mostly bypassed CDs in favour of iPods and tablets, but good old vinyl is still a viable niche market for current tunes. And when it comes to older albums — well, just check out the newest Vinyl Supernova music fair to see how popular that analogue technology continues to be.

First launched in November of 2013, the fourth Vinyl Supernova happens this month, and founder Ryan Wugalter expects there will be more than double the number of vendors and attendees that were at the original. “About 40 dealers are coming from all over the island and the lower mainland,� says Wugalter, who guesses upwards of 600 record buffs will each pay $2 to rummage through as many as 25,000 albums on display. Prices range from a buck a piece to several hundred dollars for serious collectables. “The biggest sale I heard of at Supernova was $600 for a Led Zeppelin bootleg,� recalls Wugalter. “And the guy who bought it knew he could resell it for twice that amount.� Wugalter, who works at an ESL school, moved here from Vancouver in September 2012. Used to selling at record fairs on the mainland, he was surprised to discover that there hadn’t been one in Victoria for two decades. “There’s a huge collector culture here in Victoria, so I just went ahead and created my own fair,� says Wugalter.

ine months after stepping down as the long-time CEO of Monk Office, James McKenzie is showing no signs of slowing down. He has two other businesses on the go — Victoria Cook Culture kitchenware stores and McKenzie Arnold Contracting — as well as a real estate portfolio to manage.

“I definitely didn’t retire,” laughs the 59-year-old Monk co-owner. “I’m actually busier than I was before, but in a more relaxed way.”

After more than three decades at the helm of what is now Vancouver Island’s biggest office products provider and the largest independent stationer in the province, McKenzie decided to bring in a new CEO last May. “It was a difficult decision to come to, but it has not been difficult to do,” McKenzie says. “After 32 years of the buck stopping with me, it really was taking its toll on my health and my outlook on life. And frankly, it was starting to impact the business.”

For McKenzie, who started working in the family business when he was just eight years old, ensuring the future of an iconic island company that’s survived and thrived for more than 60 years was paramount. But it hasn’t always been easy.

“The truth is, we haven’t always been so successful,” McKenzie admits. “There have been some significant low points and some significant high points. I like to call it ‘time in the sun’ and ‘time in the shade’ and the goal is to stay in the sun as much as you can.”

So how does a local company weather harsh economic storms and competition from big box stores to stay in the sun? For this veteran businessman, the answer is simple: surround yourself with good people and make sure you have a plan.

“The biggest thing I’ve learned over the years is to have a plan,” says McKenzie. “It doesn’t have to be perfect, but you have to work the plan and adapt it if you see it’s not having the expected results. That’s how businesses succeed over decades — they adapt to the changing circumstances.”

Starting out as a young leader, McKenzie admits he was frustrated that staff didn’t have the same drive or love of the business that he did.

“But as I matured I realized I can’t have that expectation of 99 per cent of the people,” he says.

McKenzie never planned to follow in his father Ron’s footsteps at Monk. After spending his summers

working in the store, McKenzie left the retail world behind to become a civil engineer.

“If someone had asked me when I graduated from university if I would ever work for Monk, I would have laughed at them!”

But four years into an engineering career, McKenzie realized it wasn’t his calling. Returning to Monk, he helped grow the small business from just two Victoria stores in 1982 to the office supply leader it is today with 12 locations across Vancouver Island. But McKenzie is the first to admit there were growing pains.

“We purchased a new distribution centre at the same time we purchased a chain of retail stores up island, which allowed us to move into that market,” he explains. “Both were the right moves at the right time, but I didn’t properly put in place a plan to finance that and even though the company was profitable, our cash flow really suffered and almost lost the business in the mid-90s.”

McKenzie says it was his biggest mistake in his 32-year tenure at Monk, and it taught him the importance of having plan. He also learned the importance of building a good team, and cultivating leadership, which is one of the reasons Monk staff are given paid time off from work to volunteer.

“It started out as a way to give back to our community, but there’s been an unintended by-product in that volunteer work can be an extremely good tool for leadership development,” McKenzie says. “Ninety per cent of the time I’ve found that when we give with no expectation of return, we do get these returns and they are meaningful.”

It’s one of the many life and business lessons McKenzie is sharing with this two grown children. But, he says, it’s also important to let them make their own mistakes.

“They’ve both gone through many of the lessons I did, whether it’s overextending oneself or missing an opportunity by not acting fast enough, but I want my kids to be very independent and make their own way.”

And that includes the possibility of a third generation of McKenzies taking over. Both children have worked at Monk but are currently doing other things.

“I’m hopeful they’ll want to take over but they have to live their own lives and follow their own passions like I did.”

hether it’s through protecting pristine ecosystems, representing families and working moms on council, supporting community arts and culture, or developing a new perspective on doing business, the women in Victoria are a strong, innovative group, and they’re not afraid to get involved.

Ask Alice Finall — the first mayor in North Saanich to be elected for three consecutive terms — which women are making a difference in Victoria and she immediately thinks of several names.

But the very first to spring to mind is Sheila Irving.

“I can certainly think of a lot of women, but Shelia has been an amazing volunteer, really, in terms of the community as a whole,” says Finall.

The North Saanich Residents’ Association, the Dominion Brook Park Friends, the Saanich Peninsula Inlet Protection Society, the Peninsula Streams Society — Irving has been involved in just about every aspect of community improvement over the years.

And the beautiful thing, Finall says, is that Irving is far from unique in her dedication. North Saanich has a strong community of volunteers, many of them women, who work

“There have been a lot of women involved in extensive environmental initiatives, I certainly have seen that,” she adds.

That drive to protect and nurture the natural world runs throughout all the Greater Victoria municipalities, but it’s especially active in Sooke, where it blends with a history of tough-as-nails women pioneers. Though Sooke is a young municipality — having only incorporated in 1999 — Mayor Maja Tait says there’s been an unbreakable sense of community since the days of Ma Miller and Cougar Annie.

“They’re not afraid to ask questions, and they’re not afraid to turn around and say, ‘I need a little more time to think on this.’”

“Historically, women have emerged as taking care of the community, and women have always been actively involved and engaged in building community,” says Tait.

This mix of present-day and historical women include Elida Peers, a historian who’s worked with the museum to preserve and celebrate Sooke’s rich past; Frederique Philip, a “dynamic woman from France,” who had the gumption to set up a boutique hotel in the middle of a logging town and make it one of the most successful inns on the island; and Dr. J. Ellen Anderson, who has been running programs for youth and finding innovative ways to support Sooke’s medical needs and attract more doctors to the area.

Tait also makes a point of calling out the dedication and commitment from women on council, something that Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins has observed in her town hall.

In her third term now as mayor, Desjardins is in the unique position of having close to an all-woman council.

With just one man in the ranks, Desjardins says, there is definitely a different feel at the table.

“Women tend to bring the questions, the discussion to reaching consensus,” she says. “It’s not that it takes longer, but it’s certainly a different approach. In discussions, there’s a respect for each other and each other’s comments.”

With three new faces joining council in November and a notoriously steep learning curve in the first year of municipal politics, Desjardins says, that willingness to explore all aspects of a topic is particularly noticeable.

“They’re not afraid to ask questions, and they’re not afraid to turn around and say, ‘I need a little more time to think on this,’” she says.

“I think [women] bring a different feel to the conversations,” agrees Carol Hamilton, Mayor of Colwood, and one of four women on her council this term. “It’s a different inflection. This last time around and going forward, we’ve had longer conversations around the whole circle. Everyone gets to weigh in. We don’t necessarily always agree, but we always agree to agree on the outcome.”

“It’s truly democracy happening there,” Hamilton adds, “because they’ve taken in each other’s viewpoints and weighed it out, and come up with the best options.”

She sees this collaborative mentality branching out into the business world as well, with women taking on higher profile roles in a variety of fields.

“There are a lot of women out there in different business scopes that have made their niche,” says Hamilton.

“We’re starting to see women coming into planning and engineering in the municipal end of things too. It’s happening, but it doesn’t happen with great fanfare and announcements. It’s more low key.”

Women are approaching business in new ways than ever before too, says Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps.

“Something that women in Victoria are doing really well is blending community and business, and that’s really important, because business and community are often thought of as being separate.”

Sisters Jayne and Suzanne Bradbury are top of mind for Helps. The Bradburys, who own a number of properties on Fort and Blanshard streets, decided to liven up the community last summer and created “Fort Commons” in a parking lot.

“There were festivals and movie nights, “says Helps.

“Did they lose money on it? Absolutely, but that’s not the point. They understood the vibrancy that can be created just by looking at a parking lot a little bit differently.”

She adds, “When you blend business and community, you’re empowering women, and younger women, that you don’t have to choose [between the two]. You can actually 90

serve your community and grow your business at the same time.”

That blurring of lines between societal roles and the continual demolition of stereotypes means that women are less limited in plotting out their futures, the mayors say. Motherhood, local government and environmental activism are no longer seen as distinct categories, exclusive of each other.

And throughout Greater Victoria, there are generations of women who have moved into those blurred edges, lending their voices to their wide and varied passions, and inspiring everyone they meet.

What’s the DVBA working on now? We have just embarked on the third year of our three-year strategic plan, which focuses on marketing and events, research and analysis, and clean and sustainable initiatives.

The DVBA’s signature event this year is Car-Free Day, a transformational urban event that will speak to what Victoria is, and all that it can be. We’re also actively promoting Victoria as the downtown of choice for investors, and we’re tying our research and analysis activities to that particular goal. We have installed pedestrian counters on strategic blocks to measure the flow of people downtown. This will help inform decisionmakers about where to invest, and to assist in encouraging existing businesses to stay. Victoria is emerging as a destination of choice on the world landscape and we all need to keep building on that momentum.

It’s nice to meet you, Fran Hobbis. Where are you from and how did you get to Victoria? I was born in North Vancouver, graduated from UBC, and married a Victoria boy who always wanted to get back to the island. We took a motorcycle ride one summer day, found a house at the top of the mountain in Maple Bay, and never looked back. Our two daughters were born in the Cowichan Valley and we commuted to Victoria until we both had jobs there.

As chair of the Downtown Victoria Business Association, what are some of the programs in which you’ve been involved? The DVBA is an amazing organization that delivers ongoing programs, like Illuminate (downtown lighting projects), the reCyclists (mobile recycling pickup) and the Clean Team — a group of individuals who have overcome personal challenges of various types to become our organization “on the street.”

They make sure the streets are clean, remove graffiti tags, 130

have been with BC Ferries for 20 years, and done lots of interesting things, including working with Jawl Properties on the Atrium building, where our corporate head office resides, and managing our space there. I have a major role in our information governance program, and have recently implemented a comprehensive employee travel program. In addition, I deliver inter-personal communication programs.

Last summer you did some fundraising for the BC Cancer Foundation through the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival. How did this come about? I am so grateful for my good health. I have known many people touched by cancer, and last summer it was a very dear aunt of mine. It’s one of those diseases that does not discriminate … and those who are fighting it are truly my heroes. Dragon boating came about three years ago, as I looked for an activity to promote teamwork. There is nothing more dependent on working together than dragon boating: 20 people in a boat will go nowhere unless they are paddling together. I could not think of a more apt metaphor for the value and impact of a high-functioning team.

What has life taught you? Family first ALWAYS. Finish what you start and be a participant rather than an observer.

Is there anything else we should know about Fran Hobbis? My parents came here from the Netherlands in 1958 — with a couple of nickels and not much else. They created a future for their children starting with just a dream and worked incredibly hard to achieve it. That is a powerful frame of reference for me and gives me incredible motivation to make the most of every opportunity I have.

2015 LEXUS NX 200T: ‘A DREAM TO DRIVE’ “You get in and you don’t want to stop driving.”

Big praise, but well-deserved for the brand new 2015 Lexus NX 200T, says Susan Hewko, owner of Victoria’s Heli Connections Aviation Inc. A long-time Lexus driver, Susan knew she needed the space of an SUV, but really wanted a mid-size option, which Lexus hadn’t previously offered.

So, after test-driving a host of vehicles from other dealerships, she was relieved to learn of the NX 200’s December launch. While only three were delivered initially to Victoria, one happened to be just right.

“I was one of the first people in Victoria to buy one – I got in to take it for a test drive and it was love at first sight,” says Susan, immediately taken with the fit and finish of the car, not to mention the host of special features.

From safety measures like the parking assist and blind spot monitoring to amenities like the heated and cooled power-recline seats, not to mention exceptional handling and fuel-efficiency, “it’s a dream to drive,” Susan says.

So fun is the car, in fact, that Susan must occasionally fend off husband Barry, who also likes to climb behind the wheel, she adds with a laugh. The two appreciate the comfortable accessibility for older parents and the ample cargo space for their two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and eagerly await their first roadtrip in the new wheels.

While Susan was taken immediately by the NX 200T, it’s the service at Lexus that also brings her back year after year, she notes. “They really make buying and servicing our car an enjoyable experience.”
