elcome, again, to our annual issue cheering our readers’ picks for the Best of Boulder East County.

This is a celebration issue, even more so than it usually is, because surviving the last 18 months is a notable accomplishment on its own.

Emerging from the pandemic hasn’t been an easy road for any business; it’s likely that nearly every company you’ll read about in these pages struggled through the state-mandated shutdown, the mask mandates, and the slow trickle of returning commerce, along with whatever personal impact COVID-19 had on the workers’ and owners’ lives.

In last year’s Best of Boulder East County, some of the winners hadn’t survived the pandemic year. This time around, the enterprises we’re celebrating deserve extra props for being survivors—or, in some cases, like that of Best New Business and Best Bookstore winner The Read Queen, they opened right in the worst of times, yet are now thriving.

In this issue, we’ve selected a few businesses that won multiple awards to feature in a little more detail. We took a closer look at The Roost, Trivium Salon, IgadI, The Read Queen, and Acreage to illuminate a handful of your favorites further.

iners discovered new worlds of fun and flavor in 2020 when Chef Hugo Meyer opened Piripi in Old Town Erie. Refusing to be confined in one culinary corner, the Argentina-born global traveler has crafted a menu packed with dishes that are a little Latin, a little Mediterranean, but mostly Hugo. That means Spanish octopus drizzled with fine olive oil as a starter. Spot-on sesame-crusted ahi with wild rice and beans and wasabi also fit under that tent along with churrasco-style steak and gluten-free chocolate espresso pie. Piripi is as new as it gets and our readers’ choice for best new restaurant.

But, since it opened in 2011, LuLu’s always broadened the coalition with mouthwatering Texas white oak-smoked firm tofu dished with minced onions, sport peppers, and house-made pickles. Frankly, we would be happy to make a meal of Lulu’s wonderful side dishes from BBQ beans and cornbread to slaw and fried okra—but we’d still have ribs for dessert.

or a simple preparation—chicken wings cooked in hot oil—it can be frustratingly difficult to find wings done well. Not at Wing Shack, though: Here, the wings are meaty and crispy rather than soggy and limp, and the dry rubs and sauces span a spectrum that travels from BBQ and teriyaki on the sweet end to golden hot, hotter, and bear hot for those who like to suffer a bit when they’re gnawing a wing to the bone. East County voters applaud view, vibes, and stellar ciders at Acreage

Y

ou don’t really know what you’ve been missing until your eyes get grabbed by a magnificent Colorado sunset viewed from Acreage Ciderhouse & Eatery. The two-acre site sits on a hill in Lafayette facing west, providing a rare panorama of the Front Range and mountains and beyond.

However, it takes much more than a patio with a view these days to win your votes for the best Place to Eat Outdoors, even though Acreage has won the vote in this category repeatedly. The past two years have permanently changed our concept of al fresco dining. It’s now a pleasure and a necessity all year round.

Since almost every East Boulder County eatery now features some outdoor dining under everything from yurts to tents, our expectations are also much higher.

No matter how you like your outside dining, Acreage fills the bill. Besides a spacious deck, a wide patio area includes fire pits, picnic tables, and rustic Adirondack chairs that are perfect for taking in the mountain backdrop.

Acreage’s cider house dishes echo the Colorado mountain lodge feel with lots of roasted, smoked, grilled comfort flavors. The menu of cider-friendly starters includes smoked almonds, frites with cider aioli, pimento cheese with lavosh crackers and house-baked soft pretzels with cheese sauce.

The substantial fall and winter big plates range from crispy pork shoulder atop grits with smoked peach BBQ sauce and crispy kale to smoke-licked salmon filet accompanied by carrots, corn, cotija cheese, and cranberry compote.

Crowd-pleasers on the patio naturally include bratwurst with sauerkraut, sirloin steak with chimichurri sauce, cider-steamed mussels and the stellar Acreage burger with aged Cheddar cheese and smoked bacon jam.

tric but Acreage delivers a bounty of vegetable treats like plates of roasted carrots with parsnip purée, cumin yogurt and puffed lentils, and a truly dynamic taste duo: roasted beets with roasted sweet potatoes. A classic fall salad is upgraded with fire-roasted apples plus bleu cheese, candied pecans and a tart apple herb vinaigrette.

When you walk inside Acreage past the open kitchen’s wood fires and the long bar you can glimpse the heart of the operation, the gleaming production area for Stem Ciders. Acreage is the most dramatic evidence that cider has gained more than a foothold in the selfdescribed Silicon Valley of craft beer. Founded in Denver in 2013 as a tiny groundbreaking cidery, Stem is now a notable national cider brand. Acreage and Stem Cider have done as much as anyone in Colorado to feed the state’s expanding cider consciousness.

That’s why it makes sense that once again the Boulder Weekly’s readers voted Acreage (and Stem Cider) as the top cidery in East Boulder County. The place attracts cider-savvy visitors to Colorado from all over the world.

If you haven’t sipped artisan ciders, they are much more varied tasting than the canned national varieties.

You can sample flights of ciders that range from surprisingly dry to modestly sweet (but never cloying) including Stem’s flagship Dry, Raspberry, Pear, Hibiscus and curious favorites like the summertime fave, A Salted Cucumber cider.

It’s well worth sipping at the Ciderhouse for two reasons. First, as with ales, nothing beats sipping a cider fresh on the tap onsite. Next, the cidery is the only place you can sample some of Stem’s small-batch and experimental ciders. Consider some fall offerings such as the Cocoa Caramel apple cider infused with bittersweet cocoa. Also on tap is Guava Chile with its mild, lingering heat on the palate. Banjo cider is aged eight months in casks from Laws Whiskey House in Denver casks for eight months. There are other local connections in the Colorado Peach cider and the alelike Fresh Hop (with Colorado-grown hops).

There is one item that has been on the menu since Acreage opened largely because the regulars insisted upon it. The freshly fried glazed cake donuts made with Stem apple cider are so good the typical morning pastry has become the eatery’s favorite sweet finale.

SUSAN FRANCE The two found their ideal location in Lafayette, a turn-of-the-twentieth-century building that once housed the town’s hardware store and lumberyard. “It wasn’t occupied, it hadn’t been used as a retail space before, so it needed down-to-the-studs remodelling,” Appelhans says.

But the location in Old Town Lafayette was ideal, and, Appelhans says, “the community had been wanting a bookstore for a long time. The building owners and the City of Lafayette and then the community of Lafayette were just so incredibly welcoming; it really facilitated us in our project.”

Work began on overhauling the building in October 2019, with tweaks like adding a cafe to the plan (“in case the books don’t sell,” Appelhans laughs) lengthening the construction phase. Then, in March 2020, with the bookshop still being remodeled, the pandemic hit. Supplies took longer to arrive.

Crews couldn’t work simultaneously, and few people could work in the same building at the same time.

“We were just so scared,” Appelhans recalls. “Like, ‘Is this how it’s going to end?’”
