TIP ONE BACK

ell, well, well, we meet again, our intrepid readers and voters who make Boulder Weekly’s annual Best of Boulder issue possible. We couldn’t do this without you, that’s for sure, so we extend our utmost thanks for helping us identify and celebrate the top of the top—the crème de la crème—the best of the Best of Boulder County attractions, establishments, programs, businesses, people and more. For 26 years now, Boulder Weekly has invited readers to weigh in on their favorite bars, restaurants, shops, museums, schools, gyms, cannabis businesses and more. What lies in these pages is a reflection of your votes! And though we’re far from what “normal” once was in the business world, we’ve been inspired whilst witnessing the dexterity, flexibility and passion that has kept many a Boulder County business afloat these last two years. (Hello, outdoor dining, creative delivery options and virtual offerings!) No matter what happens as the future unfolds, we think it’s safe to say we can count on our local businesses to keep life in Boulder County feeling fun and full of opportunities. Think of Best of Boulder as a resource: The next time you’re in the mood for drinks, need a creative date idea, are ready for a new gym routine, or need to source a present for a loved one, all you need to do is peel open these pages. To all the spotlit businesses (and those that didn’t make the cut): We thank you deeply for what you do, and we hope the rest of 2022 sails on smoothly.

Japango and the art of meraki SUSAN FRANCE

s restaurants fought to survive the pandemic over the last two years, Japango owners Jon and Erin Banis placed their focus on preserving the ethos the Pearl Street sushi restaurant was founded on: providing a memorable dining experience. “Why I’ve always enjoyed the restaurant industry is, plain and simple, hospitality,” says Jon, who started as the general manager of Japango when it opened in 1999, and eventually took ownership of the restaurant in 2007. “Dining out is sometimes one of the simple treasures that people get on any given day. It’s good to see people at their highest times. But you also get to see people on their lowest days, when dining out might be the only bright spot of their day or week. So, for me, it’s just about providing an experience for people. That’s what we try to nurture. Hospitality, in its essence, is providing a memorable experience and taking care of people’s needs. That’s why I always loved it.” It’s clear the Banis’ focus has paid off over the years, as Japango has won Best Japanese and Best Sushi for the last three years running. Before you even take a bite of melt-in-your mouth salmon sashimi or a mouthful of earthy Junmai-style sake, patrons can find immediate relaxation in the awardwinning architectural design by acclaimed architect Scott Rodwin: a bright, open dining area, sushi bar and cocktail lounge, accented by warm Tiikeri (reclaimed sorghum stalk) and an otherworldly jellyfish tank. A back patio with a fireplace offers a cozy place to enjoy an evening with friends away from the hustle and bustle, while a Pearl Street patio offers some of the best people watching in town. Above the sushi bar you’ll notice a collection of signatures: members of the 2000 U.S. Olympic Judo team who stopped into this iconic Boulder eatery. But atmosphere will only take a restaurant so far without mouth-watering

food and drink to bring patrons back again and again. Head chef Iwasa Yukiji has been crafting traditional and contemporary Japanese cuisine for Japango since the restaurant’s inception, while creative beverage director Stanley Usinowicz has been creating inventive cocktails and curating Japango’s extensive selection of Japanese whisky since 2013. Japanago currently maintains a staff of 65 employes. “I think we’ve always tried to nurture a fun environment where people feel heard, and enjoy coming into work,” says Erin, who curates Japango’s sake offerings after taking in-depth courses on the rice-based drink several years ago. “When people come to dine here, you’re creating a vibe, you’re creating an atmosphere. We’ve always tried to translate that to our staff. We have a lot of respect for them, especially after COVID. It became more glaringly obvious that we are dependent on them to get through all this. And so we hope to nurture a place of mutual respect.” Part of that respect involves providing customers with that memorable experience, which means all servers are educated on sushi and drink offerings, there are no QR codes in place of physical menus, and veteran employees like Yukiji and Usinowicz are onhand to help guide customers through menu options. “As far as quality, true traditional training, even though our menu definitely has a very contemporary twist, Iwasa (Yukiji) brings a very traditional approach that you don’t get to see a lot of places anymore,” Jon says. “You know, there’s a sushi restaurant on every corner these days, but you don’t necessarily get that type of experience behind the scenes.” Indeed, Japanago characterizes the spirit of meraki, a Greek word with no English equivalent that means doing something with your soul, imbuing it with creativity and love —Caitlin Rockett

here has always been something about the food, service and atmosphere at Carelli’s of Boulder that makes us want to share it with family and friends. In naming it Boulder’s top Italian eatery, our readers voted for the perfectly prepared roster of classics from mussels and carpaccio to the pasta perfection of ravioli and angel hair aglio e olio. Whether they crave chicken piccata, chicken Parmigiana or lasagna, generations of University of Colorado students have built lasting memories at Carelli’s.

Kathmandu’s fragrant tandoori chicken, vegetable-filled samosas and lamb biryani is so memorable that our readers recommend it as the best dining experience in Nederland. Diners can find their bliss and experience a sweaty forehead if they order spicy lamb, fish or chicken vindaloo extra hot with basmati rice that smells like buttered popcorn. Explore Indian breads beyond naan, delights like puffy fried puri, gheebrushed roti and pan-fried aloo paratha. If you can’t decide, visit the well-stocked lunch and dinner buffet.

Restaurant owner Thuy Le always added dishes she liked from China, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan and Malaysia. Our readers know they can find great pad Thai, coconut curry, Chinese-influenced sesame chicken and larb from Laos besides the pho soup variations. Some craveables like the crunchy papaya salad are hard for any one national cuisine to claim. One of the most popular Asian fusion dishes on Chez Thuy’s menu is Malaysian seafood: shrimp, scallops and calamari sautéed with chayote squash, jalapeño and coconut sauce.

While the pizzeria had to close its 20-year-old spot at 1325 Broadway on the Hill, Cosmo’s’ many other locations guarantee the timely delivery of your hot Supreme, Greek Veggie, Hawaiian or Meat Lovers pies. 24 APRIL 28, 2022

Sherpa Pemba guided more than 20 ascents over 20,000 feet and for 20 years he had led diners to new flavors at Sherpa’s Adventurers Restaurant. Many visitors discover the momo, steamed dumplings filled with vegetables, beef or chicken with zesty chutney for dipping. The more adventurous will order Tibetan thupka with noodles, vegetables and yak meat. It doesn’t taste like chicken, but yak is tender and delicious. Make sure to get garlic and cheese naan to grab bites of creamy saag paneer. Sherpa’s shaded patio is a great place to chill with a beer or cool creamy mango lassi.

n Boulder, landlocked hasn’t meant living without fresh fish for decades, especially since Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar opened. The restaurant’s devotion to sourcing the freshest seafood and serving it simply is only part of the reason Jax has won this category of the Best of Boulder for many years in a row. From the start, Jax has moved mountains to support sustainable wild and farm fisheries across the globe. Jax’s executive chef Sheila Lucero is a nationally recognized authority on seafood you can feel good about eating, especially those dozens of oysters Jax is famous for.

It’s easy to understand after tasting the smoky brisket, pulled pork and chicken, and mouth-grabbing sauces from Carolina Mustard to Sweet Heat. Frankly, we could make a meal just from Georgia Boys’ scratch-made BBQ beans, potato salad, mac and cheese, cornbread and sweet potato casserole. Want to taste almost everything? The family sampler boasts a full slab of ribs, meats including jalapeño-cheddar links, sides, sauces and Texas toast. Don’t forget the banana pudding!

The challenge is choosing the perfect build-your-own scheme between steak and cheese, pork carnitas with guacamole, and the crispy beer-battered fish burrito with slaw and salsa.

BOULDER WEEKLY

Come join us for our GRAND OPENING at our new location on May 21st at

110 Emery St, Ste C, Longmont CO

2022

T

here are dozens of excellent coffee shops in Boulder County. Whether you go for the atmosphere or your perfect cup of coffee, sometimes it can be hard to choose. But Boulder Weekly’s readers have gravitated to OZO Coffee year after year, and this year is no different. Our readers voted OZO the best across each coffee category this year, from roastery and coffee house to their favorite latte and mocha in the county. From the original location at 55th Street and Arapahoe Avenue, where OZO Coffee first opened its doors in 2007, the company has seen a steady expansion to five locations in Boulder and Longmont. The first cafe is still there, but the growth hasn’t been limited to just new shops. OZO has delved into online subscriptions and expanded wholesale opportunities throughout the state, even delving into the world of instant coffee. The next steps for OZO will be focused on building up from within, rather than an outward expansion, according to OZO Social Coordinator Rebekah Hartman, including environmental and social responsibilities. “The coffee community in Boulder County has transformed since we opened our doors (on Arapahoe Avenue) and we are super stoked to be part of the innovation, especially regarding sustainability and discovering better methods for our packaging and environmental impact,” Hartman says. On the grand scale, Hartman explains, that translates to continued care and quality throughout OZO’s supply chain and building strong relationships with the coffee farm-

A warm cup of community at OZO Coffee

ers across the globe. OZO’s coffees are certified Organic and Fair Trade, but the work can always continue. “The future of OZO is all about strength and building back an even stronger community,” she says. “We’re setting big goals emphasizing environmental, social responsibility and social justice.” At the more local level, Hartman says the shops will be bringing in more live, local music and events. In particular, the company will work to amplify SUSAN FRANCE and support local nonprofits with fundraisers, donations and givebacks, beyond whole bean coffee supplies. Our readers aren’t the only ones that love OZO Coffee, the sentiment extends to the staff as well. Garrett Leonnig, manager at OZO’s Longmont location, started with the company around 2015. Rising through the ranks, he continues to find joy and satisfaction working with the company. “I’ve worked at a lot of different coffee shops along the way and I’ve never been anywhere where I’ve felt the owners had an investment in the company the way OZO does. That keeps me invested too,” Leonnig says. “If they care that much, it makes me care too. We have a shared vision of creating a nice community space that’s worked out really well for us.” More than just coffee, Leonnig says making OZO shops a warm, welcoming place is paramount to their success. OZO’s staff strives to eliminate any sense of pretension or snobbery when it comes to coffee and espresso, he says, preferring instead to embrace a world grown familiar with Starbucks terminology. “If you want a caramel macchiato (like Starbucks), we’ll

help you find something close,” Leonnig says with a laugh. That sense of warmth is shared by Leonnig’s staff as well. Barista Jodi Schoonover spoke highly of the company when it comes to employee care, continued education and how the beans themselves are sourced, but it’s the people that keep her coming in every day. “The atmosphere really is warm and welcoming. Working in coffee in general is all about the human connection,” Schoonover says. “It’s fun to know all the regulars and have micro-conversations about their lives.” Even with the Longmont location’s placement in the open-air Village at the Peaks, Schoonover says she appreciates how it still feels like a neighborhood coffee shop. “It still has this neighborhood vibe. People bring in friends and family out of town,” she says. “Even when we’re busy on Saturdays and Sundays, it’s a good vibe.” — Matt Maenpaa

hen the original Mountain Sun Brewpub reopened on Feb. 4, Boulder could finally breathe a little sigh of relief. The Pearl Street icon had been shuttered during the pandemic for 23 months, but it never closed. “There have been times in the past two years when I questioned whether we could keep going, but when we finally opened the doors at Mountain Sun on Pearl and saw people so happy, it was all worth it,” says Kevin J. Daly, founder of Mountain Sun Brewpubs. “We’ll make sure that place will always remain open.” Boulder’s Southern Sun and Under the Sun Eatery & Pizzeria, and Longs Peak Pub &Taphouse in Longmont, are now also open. The Vine Street Pub in Denver remains closed. Boulder Weekly readers have awarded Mountain Sun four Best of Boulder food awards as their favorite American restaurant, their top place to get burgers and veggie burgers and their choice for kid-friendly dining. “We are so appreciative to the Boulder community for all the years of support. The love is mutual,” Daly says. Mountain Sun’s reputation of great food and craft beers, comes from a simple fact: “I’m a foodie,” Daly says. “I like eating great food, but it wasn’t being

served much at brewpubs when we opened 29 years ago. I wanted great food in a pub setting, and that includes burgers.” One non-meat burger isn’t enough for diners at Mountain Sun so the menu offers a tasty black bean veggie burger, a garden burger, and meaty Beyond Burger patties along with long lists of toppings, buns and condiments. “Everybody says they come to Mountain Sun for the vegetarian food but they’re really eating burgers. We source high-quality beef locally, and most importantly, we griddle them. They aren’t grilled so they’re juicier,” Daly says. At the Mountain Sun’s roomier locations with patios, kids and families have always fit in with the boisterous vibe, friendly servers and comfortable furniture. “We’ve always gone out of our way to make everyone comfortable in our places, and that includes families. It’s not a fancy place,” Daly says. Daly is looking forward to celebrating Mountain Sun’s upcoming 30th anniversary with an event or music festival, and expects to ride through whatever comes next. “It’s always been about community. As soon as people could gather, they did, and always will,” he says. — John Lehndorff

here’s nothing quite like that experience of walking into a dispensary and feeling like a kid in a candy store—or like you’ve just stepped into the Wonka Factory. That’s exactly how you’ll feel walking into Eclipse Cannabis Company in North Boulder—not just because of the wild mural art and its cosmic theme, but because they have the widest, most diverse selection of cannabis products of any dispensary in Boulder, according to our readers. They’ve got what you’re looking for.

hen our readers are looking for great deals on cannabis, they look no further than Eclipse Cannabis Company. Not only do our readers say these are the best bargains in town, Eclipse carries interesting products, like Athelas Creamy Ranch Dressing & Dip Mix, with 100 mg of THC in every packet. If edibles aren’t your thing, Eclipse often has great deals on flower as well, like Lama Brand’s Wizscotti, a 19.8% THC hybrid that will have you feeling good without breaking the bank.

2022

icole and Gerry Weinholt were on their honeymoon when they laid out a vision for their future. The two wanted to merge Nicole’s experience teaching yoga with Gerry’s knack for business into a single enterprise—a passion project they could pursue together and through which they could share their mutual love for yoga with others. That was 17 years ago, now. Today the vision they painted on that trip has grown from the seed of an idea into a fruitful, flowering tree with roots in five different states across the US. They’ve poured their hearts and souls into it, cultivating a community that’s more than a simple yoga studio. The Yoga Pod, from its owners to its teachers to its students, is a family striving for health and wellness together and thriving along the journey. That family feel is a huge factor in what sets their studios’ above the rest, they say. “It’s so fulfilling,” Gerry says, seated beside his partner in business and life, Nicole. “That’s one of the main reasons why we do it.” In 2010, the couple acquired their first location: the original Yoga Pod on 29th street, here in Boulder. They renovated the space, added their own style and flare to it—manifesting their vision and realizing their dream. They expanded. Then that studio moved to their larger current space at 30th and Walnut. Then they opened up other studios in other states, in Arizona, Florida, Texas and Nevada and opened more studios here in Colorado. The Longmont Yoga Pod opened at the beginning of 2022 and they just announced the acquisition of the Yoga Loft at Foothills and Broadway in South Boulder, which will become Yoga Pod’s 13th studio nation-wide. “The transformative power of yoga is what we want

people to know and share because of what it means to us and how it has changed our lives in so many ways, not just physically, but [spiritually] as well,” Gerry says. “Yoga is bigger than just the physical asana and the twisty bendy postures we put ourselves in,” Nicole agrees. “We just want [our students] to be able to come in and relax Yoga Pod, Multiple locations around Boulder County

and let go of whatever they have to let go of and walk out of here feeling a little better and more cared for.” In a town like Boulder, with so many yoga studios, it takes a special kind of business to stand out. Asked what sets them apart, both Gerry and Nicole responded without hesitation: it’s their teachers. They have the best, most talented teachers at Yoga Pod and they encourage them to shine their brightest, they say. “Our teachers are so talented and they have years of experience and they come with so many creative gifts. And we’re so grateful to be able to let them share that,” Nicole says. “They’re taking the student on a journey, and we’re grateful that they’re able to provide that.” “We don’t try to cookie-cutter [our teachers] or restrict them in how they want to express themselves as teachers,” Gerry says. “That’s a high motivation for us to create the environment where teachers can flourish in they’re calling, their gift, their talent.” And with their new location in Longmont and soon-to-open location in South Boulder, they’re vastly expanding the opportunities for their teachers and their students. By opening their third location in Boulder County, they’re making it possible for their teachers to teach yoga full time if they want to—and they’re obviously adding a lot of classes for students to explore and experience. Gerry says he simply can’t imagine doing anything else, anywhere else in the country. They’re so passionate about this work, are so supported by this community, they just want to give back to it—through the power of yoga. “Yoga really is, not just to practice, but a lifestyle,” Nicole says. “And we really try to embody that.” —Will Brendza

Entrepreneurial Spirit Award: Full Cycle and Colorado Multisport SUSAN FRANCE

I

n the deepest throes of the pandemic, Russ Chandler arrived at a crossroads in his business, Full Cycle. Changing locations is a challenging prospect for any business, but after being firmly entrenched at two well-established locations —on the Hill for 40 years and downtown at 18th and Pearl for 15 years—Chandler faced an existential dilemma that exposes an epidemic of our own in Boulder: rising rents. He tried to negotiate an agreeable deal with his landlord, but his entreaties fell on deaf ears. So, Chandler was forced to choose between taking on the added liability of exorbitant rent or exhibiting the kind of creativity and innovation true entrepreneurs are famous for. Fortunately for thousands of Boulder cyclists, Russ Chandler possesses rare entrepreneurial vision, and seized the opportunity to join forces with a related business—Colorado Multisport—and refashion the former location of Natural Grocers at 30th and Pearl into the most epic bike shop in the history of a community that is simultaneously friendly and hostile to the cycling community. More importantly, Chandler rolled the dice on his vision at a time when the future of retail business was in serious doubt, due to the seemingly never-ending series of lockdowns in connection with COVID-19, not to mention a host of serious supply chain issues. Chandler made a risky calculation that the effects of the pandemic could actually benefit the cycling industry, given that being subject to “sheltering in place” might cause folks to

be more motivated than ever to get out on two wheels. And the crapshoot paid off! Changing locations with some 400 bikes and thousands of related items, a well-equipped service department, and a unique pre- and post-ride cafe, was a daunting undertaking, but Chandler demonstrated another classic skill that entrepreneurs possess: work ethic. So, Chandler and his outstanding team rolled up their sleeves and tackled the Herculean task before them. The new Full Cycle & Colorado Multisport opened in April 2021, including an expanded Tune Up Bar & Coffee Shop, a de facto community center with live music and events almost nightly, and now boasts the

DETAILS, DETAILS: largest selection of bikes in Full Cycle & Boulder County. In a culture Colorado Multisport, increasingly dominated by 2355 30th St., big box corporate entities, Boulder, the Full Cycle story demon303-440-1002, strates that with courage, fullcyclebikes.com perseverance, integrity, and hard work, entrepreneurialism is alive and well. Stop by and breathe a sigh of relief at this stunning example of the survival of the American Dream. —Stewart Sallo

t all began in 1955 when Llewellyn Commodore “Bill” McGuckin opened the doors of McGuckin Hardware with just four employees. Staying within a block of its original location in Boulder, McGuckin Hardware has grown to a business of 250 employees in a 60,000-square-foot store. With supplies for gardening, plumbing, lighting, home goods, apparel, and much more, McGuckin’s is much more than a hardware store. And despite all of the growth, McGuckin Hardware continues to strive to meet Bill’s original goal of providing personalized service, great selection, and first-hand experience.

he year was 1973. Watergate was in full swing. The U.S. was ending its involvement in Vietnam. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Roe v. Wade. And in Boulder, Colorado, up on University Hill, The Fitter opened its doors. It was a strange time and there have been a lot of strange times since. And through it all, The Fitter has been outfitting Boulder’s cannabis and tobacco users with totally rad glass pipes, bongs, dab rigs, heady clothes, papers, and other odd ends and paraphernalia. It’s as much a historic business in Boulder as it is a hip head shop serving the needs of a community.
