Highroad It’s greed that fuels this CEO’s ‘grit’

eather Bresch regards herself as a self-made corporate success story — a woman who came out of hard-scrabble West Virginia and scrambled to the top as CEO of Mylan, a leading pharmaceutical corporation. As she puts it, “There is a work ethic and grit about [West Virginia] that allows me to help make a difference.”

Well, yes, grit, hard work — and being the daughter of the state’s former

governor and current U.S. Senator, Joe Manchin III. Take the MBA degree she got from West Virginia University, an academic credential bestowed on her 10 years after she left the school, having completed only about half of the coursework required to get a degree. The state university later conceded that Bresch was awarded the MBA because... well, because her father was governor at the time, overseeing the school’s budget.

It’s this sort of ethical “grit” that Mylan’s chief exec has employed to pick the pockets of thousands of vulnerable customers who rely on EpiPen, the life-saving medical treatment for deadly allergies that her corporation monopolizes. She has ruthlessly hiked the price of EpiPen by some 600 percent, while jacking up her own multimillion-dollar annual pay by nearly 700 percent. She certainly is helping to “make a difference” — by helping her-

self, that is.

Bresch’s greed has sparked a furious public backlash, but several top advocacy groups for allergy patients are curiously silent about her gouging of EpiPen patients. Why? Perhaps because she has doled out millions of dollars in “partnership” grants to them, effectively buying their allegiance.

Meanwhile, Congress does nothing, for Mylan and Big Pharma are major campaign donors. It’s not grit and work ethic that makes today’s drug makers so rich — it’s their unrestrained greed, bribery dollars and systemic ethic of corruption.

onald Trump’s zigzags on race can be confusing. He holds a polite, presidentialstyle press conference with the president of Mexico and then goes to Arizona to tell fans that hordes of feral Mexicans are streaming across the border and roaming our streets raping and pillaging and killing.

Trump’s approach to black/white relations is a little different. After a few years of numerous videos of unarmed black people killed by cops, Trump tells us that the police are the most persecuted minority group and denounces the Black Lives Matter demonstrators. Then he says black people are being betrayed

by Democrats (big city mayors, Clinton, Obama) and he will save them by swiftly sweeping criminals into jail by allowing cops to do whatever they want.

Political analyst Carl Davidson summarized Trump’s strategy: “Divide the blacks generationally, drive a wedge between blacks and Latinos, and unite whites, along with, under the banner of ‘law and order’ and the endless ‘war on terror,’ both of which will have you trading your democratic rights for a ‘security’ defined by Trump and the police and militia police wannabes.”

To understand what is going on, you can start with a book called Dog Whistle Politics: How Coded Racial Appeals Have Reinvented Racism and Wrecked the Middle Class by University of California law professor Ian Haney Lopez. He analyzes how presidential candidates stir up racial anxiety without sounding like racists. He deals with George Wallace (bringing the South’s battles to the North) to Barry

Goldwater (“states rights” opposition to civil rights) to Richard Nixon (“Southern Strategy”) to Ronald Reagan (“welfare queens in Cadillacs”) to George H.W. Bush (“Willie Horton” ad) to Mitt Romney’ (“makers and takers.”) In a milder fashion, Democrats Jimmy Carter (“ethnic purity”of neighborhoods), Bill Clinton (crime, welfare) and Barack Obama have sent coded racial messages.

In the case of Obama, coded messages to reassure whites.

In appealing to group animosities — such as racism, sexism, homophobia — Lopez argues that a politician’s dog whistles hide the “full ugliness of the underlying message from the target audience itself.” Most Americans don’t want to think of themselves as racist. He explains: “The racial dog whistle is a con: In the very moment it claims to be boldly telling politically incorrect truths, say about crime, immigration, terrorism, and trade, in fact it is surreptitiously manipulating people’s deepest fears about racial loss and betrayal. (Actually, it’s a double con, for in turn dog whistling exploits these anxieties to win working- and middle-class support for politicians indebted to the billionaire donor class — or, as with Trump, themselves the selfinterested billionaires.)”

In an article for this election year, Lopez and Heather McGhee (president of the Demos think-tank) argued that a genuinely multi-racial progressive populist coalition needs to be created. Colorado Secretary of State fails to protect Colorado citizens

On Sept. 4, 2016, it was reported that natural gas emissions surpassed coal according to the U.S. Department of Energy. On Sept. 3, 2016, a magnitude -5.6 earthquake shook Oklahoma; tying the record for the strongest quake to ever hit Oklahoma and, in response, Oklahoma regulators shut down 37 wastewater wells connected to fracking.

For the past few months, Coloradans gathered signatures in order to place ballot Initiatives 75 and 78, in an effort to protect the health, safety and welfare of the people by restricting fracking in Colorado. However, on Aug. 29, 2016, the Colorado Secretary of State, after a “random sampling,” arbitrarily decided that the anti-fracking initiatives will not make it onto the ballot. This unjust and corrupt miscarriage of justice must be challenged in court. Much like the

Colorado Supreme Court, the Colorado Secretary of State decided that profits from fracking trumped the heath, safety and welfare of the people of Colorado.

It is clear, that the oil and gas industry has declared war on Colorado and that the Colorado Secretary of State and Colorado Supreme Court will not protect the people from this significant risk to our health and environment. Now, the people of Colorado must help themselves and confront this existential threat and act in self-defense. Weibo Ludwig of Calgary, Canada fought back by pouring cement down wellhead shafts and blew up other wells.

thing that wholly benefits whites and solely victimizes people of color. The truth is, in the post-war era, racism helped create the white middle class. Since the Reagan era, racism has helped destroy it.”

They argue that racism has become a political weapon used by plutocrats to attack the 99 percent.

Beginning in the 1970s, the rightwing used a highly racialized strategy that constantly “linked public institutions to undeserving minorities in order to undo the country’s social contract — one grounded in good government, strong unions, and regulated capitalism.”

After the civil rights victories of the 1960s, government programs became available to people of color. At the same time, life was getting harder for working class whites in the 1970s. Conservatives saw that they could gain ground by dog whistling about welfare and criminals.

This strategy was outlined by Lee Atwater in 1981 in an interview with a political scientist. Atwater had been a crucial Republican operative in South Carolina for a decade and was then working in the Reagan White House. At first, he said his generation would be “the first generation of Southerners that won’t be prejudiced” because consultants like him were no longer denouncing civil rights but emphasizing fiscal conserva-

tism and national defense.

But then Atwater loosened up, became more honest and betrayed a guilty conscience. “Now, y’all aren’t quoting me on this?” he asked. He remarked: “You start out in 1954 by saying, ‘Nigger, nigger, nigger.’ By 1968 you can’t say ‘nigger’ — that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites...”

It wasn’t revealed that Atwater said this until 1999, after he died. Atwater’s guilty conscience didn’t keep him from race-baiting seven years after the interview when he worked for George H.W. Bush. He ran a vicious ad blaming Michael Dukakis for a Massachusetts black convict, Willie Horton, who “repeatedly raped” a white woman.

Indeed, Atwater pledged to make “Willie Horton his running mate.”

At the time, Bush indignantly denied any racist intent and much of the media bought his story. Today, Trump’s more explicit bigotry has discredited the GOP for many.

crony capitalism and corruption and theft that should be punished.

But Jim Hightower fails to acknowledge that most wealthy people DO work (hard), that money they’ve earned and invested has already been taxed several times along the way, that capital gains are taxed but during that same year often capital losses are not deductible, that only lower and middle income earners get any benefit from the tax codes and other federal government programs such as needs-based Pell grants, etc.

Taxing inheritance creates a disincentive to save money, punishing people who have chosen to give their children money they could have blown on things they perhaps don’t need. It punishes the very risks (investments) that drive our economy and innovation.

Hightower fails to mention that itemization is a choice for anyone who would prefer or benefit from doing so, and the plan to allow childcare deductions would bump many into that category.

I sense envy and class warfare in Jim Hightower’s editorial. Whether your sandwich is large or small, you don’t deserve to have it stolen by a wasteful and corrupt bully (federal government)... besides, it is these very uber wealthy who share their sandwiches willingly, heavily supporting the charitable organizations that help those who need it. Ugly envy.

A recall to duty for Veterans

As a veteran of the United States Air Force, I am thoroughly disappointed with and betrayed by what I see going on in America. The levels of corruption and abuse of power at the highest levels of our national government trouble me. I asked myself what I can possibly do as a veteran to continue to honor the oath I took many years ago to support and defend the Constitution. Recently, I learned about a nationwide effort to rein in the power and jurisdiction of the federal government and return much of this power back to the state governments and to the people — in other words, to rebalance power between the state and federal governments originally intended in the Constitution by America’s Founding Fathers. This nationwide effort, called Convention of States (COS) Project (www.conventionofstates.com), also seeks to require the federal government to operate under a true balanced budget requirement as well as the merits of term limits (total years of service limitation) on members of Congress and federal judges. THIS is an effort I needed to learn more about, which I eventually did. I am now an active supporter of the COS Project, and I urge all my fellow veterans to take that first step to become educated about this nonpartisan effort.

Support for the COS Project by veterans could prove crucial to its success, because we represent the 7 percent of Americans who were prepared to give the last measure of devotion in support of our Constitution. Stripping away illusions Alternative Radio founder David Barsamian teases his annual State of the World Address

I

f you go to David Barsamian’s State of the World Address looking for quick solutions to the world’s problems, you’ll be disappointed.

“It’s more like stripping away illusions,” Barsamian says of his annual lecture. “A friend [told me], ‘If you don’t have an accurate understanding of what’s going on, any solution you might propose will go nowhere.’”

And so Barsamian speaks about the “state of the world” to educate people, to peel away “layers of propaganda.” There is no magic pill, no get-rich-quick Ponzi scheme, so to speak.

“I give all these talks and people want quick answers,” Barsamian says. “‘Tell me what to do. Give me a number. Give me a website, provide some elixir that I can drink right now and it’ll all be solved.’”

An old-school independent journalist, self-taught with no college degree, Barsamian educated himself through a lifetime of travel, learning along the way that there’s no simple answer to the chaos and strife around the globe.

He founded Alternative Radio in Boulder 30 years ago, even then taking a stance against mainstream media. From the station’s “world headquarters” on Folsom Street, Barsamian airs lengthy interviews with some of the world’s most renowned political activists and thought leaders: Eqbal Ahmad, Howard Zinn, Tariq Ali, Richard Wolff, Arundhati Roy and Edward Said. He jokes that he holds the Guinness record for most interviews with Noam Chomsky, but there’s no question that it’s true.

Barsamian knows the key to change is activism.

Despite his first-hand experiences and the depth of his understanding, or perhaps because of it, Barsamian is wary of telling people how to get engaged.

“You don’t want to be pedantic and say, ‘You do this because I’m so smart and you’re not and I’ve seen the light and you haven’t so follow me,’” he says. “I’m reluctant to do that anyway because I don’t think it’s productive. I think people need to own their activism so it’s authentic. The question is what should I do?

There are so many things to do, so much work to be done. There are so many immigrants in this community who need English-as-a-second-language training.

Whether it’s feeding the homeless or … volunteering at KGNU or interning at Boulder Weekly, but doing something where you feel authentic. It’s important to own it and feel authentic in what you’re doing.”

And, he reiterates, to unwrap the “layers of propaganda” U.S. citizens are exposed to each day, from the media, from political candidates and from the very government that purports to serve the people of the United States.

Barsamian admits he doesn’t know what he’ll say at the Laughing Goat on Sept. 12 when he gives his State of the World Address, but it’s a certainty he’ll have to speak to the impending U.S. presidential election — a topic of global intrigue.

“I’m assuming Hillary is going to get elected,” he says, adding without pause, “She’s not going to change

anything; the economy will continue to be in stagflation, the rich will continue to get rich, there will be more and more income inequality and wealth concentration.”

Barsamian stops to make the distinction between income inequality and wealth inequality. When comparing income, two people can easily compete, even if one makes $30,000 a year and the other makes $50,000. The $20,000-a-year difference isn’t staggering.

But things change when you factor in wealth concentration: people who have stock options, hedge funds, property in New York and Paris, a yacht, golf club memberships. With these options, someone with a $50,000-a-year salary is far wealthier than someone who makes $30,000.

“The way it’s argued is somewhat deceptive,” Barsamian says. “If CEOs would tamp down their packages that would be better. In the ’50s I think the ratio of CEO-to-worker pay was in single digits. Now it’s triple digits.”

This, he says, will not change in a Hillary Clinton administration. And neither will U.S. military intervention across the globe.

“In fact, there’s a good chance there will be more U.S. military aggression under Hillary. She is a selfproclaimed [war]hawk who declared once again that America is the exceptional nation in the world and has a unique role to play in the world. ple,” Barsamian says.

“So who cares if the Maldives go under or Tonga or other islands in the South Pacific or Bangladesh,” Barsamian says. He references the German anti-Nazi theologian and pastor Marin Niemöller who famously said: “First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.”

As Americans, Barsamian says, it’s OK to look at our country and see what we can do here that can affect the world. And maybe we should start by questioning the very foundation of American democracy.

“We have to look at electoral politics — overall is that the answer?” Barsamian asks. “What office did Mahatma Gandhi hold? What office did he run for? What office did Martin Luther King Jr. ever hold? It’s possible to make changes without going through the electoral system, because the system is so corrupt and gerrymandered to death that one has to consider outside impulses that can transform society.”

is quite disturbing that the presidential nominee of a major political party would retweet messages from a user with the handle @WhiteGenocideTM, whose profile picture is of George Lincoln Rockwell, the founder of the American Nazi Party. But that is what Donald Trump has done. He frequently retweets supportive messages from racist or “white nationalist” Twitter accounts to his nine million followers.

We now understand that Trump’s racially and religiously bigoted remarks aren’t little accidents, but reflect his character. Journalists have also exposed his friendly relations with the “AltRight” on-line subculture which the Southern Poverty Law Center defines

This is a time of instability and anxiety. Traditional institutions and leadership are being rejected. Many are looking for “anti-establishment” solutions.

Scot Nakagawa and Tarso Luis Ramos of Political Research Associates, say that the Right evokes images of the founding fathers and the American Dream but push “radically repressive, exclusionary, anti-democratic, and authoritarian agendas.” They argue that the rightwing may be better positioned than the Left to capitalize on this “anti-establishment” moment amongst white people. The Left doesn’t have the institu-

tional infrastructure and concentrated power it had prior to Ronald Reagan’s presidency.

They note that: “the Right’s immediate projected base — economically insecure, socially conservative whites — are simultaneously feeling the pinch of racial demographic change, which many view as a threat to the meaning of ‘American,’ and bearing witness to the collapse of the middle class. The Right has popularized the idea that there’s a cause-and-effect relationship between the two. The resulting rising tide of fear and rage among many whites is lifting the hopes of white nationalist groups, some of which have ‘by any means necessary’ approaches to political struggle.”

This has been a long time coming.

In 1994, James William Gibson published a book called Warrior Dreams: Violence and Manhood in Post-Vietnam America. He argued that there was a crisis of masculinity for many men due to the American defeat in Vietnam as well as feminists’ and racial minorities’ challenge to the social status quo. He said there was a new paramilitary culture epitomized by Rambo movies, the Matt Bolen Executioner series, combat games like paintball and combat shooting schools, the tales of mercenaries in Boulder’s Soldier of Fortune magazine, far-right racist terrorists and the proliferation of lone-wolf mass killers.

That year, 1994, I heard of a “patriot” movement and its armed wing, the “citizen militias.” Professional watchers of the Right had an argument about whether the movement was merely a front for white supremacists or something more independent. All over the country, men dressed in camouflage wandered in the woods, underwent automatic weapons training and prepared to battle the enemy, which was not just communism any longer but the U.S. federal government too. The movement was decentralized, but the Militia of Montana (or MOM) served as an organizational model for others. MOM had an “Information and Networking Manual” which said “Join the Army and serve the UN or Join the Militia and Serve America...Your Choice: Freedom or Slavery.”

The movement had clout in the Republican Party in the West. Colorado state Senator Charlie Duke of Monument became a national hero for the patriots. He said taxes were a form of slavery and he got a 10th Amendment State Sovereignty Resolution passed in the legislature. Rightwingers interpret the 10th Amendment to mean that all major federal legislation (civil rights, environmental, gun control, Social Security and Medicare) are violations of the “rights” of states.

A radio station in the little town of Johnstown (near Greeley) was a national voice for the movement by way of satellite and shortwave technology. It claimed an audience of three million listeners in 81 countries. Locally, it is at KHNC 1360 AM. Talk show host Norm Resnick once told his listeners when Bill Clinton was president that Hillary was the real president and that the White House was overrun by “lesbians, sex perverts, child-molesters, Christian-haters and the most doctrinaire of communists.” He said then Attorney General Janet Reno was “a hardened lesbian and oddball radical who owns 35 pet peacocks, all named Horace.”

Once Resnick interviewed a couple who claimed that multigenerational Satanists were in prominent positions throughout society. They even go to church pot-luck suppers and take along “human-flesh casseroles.” Resnick interrupted them and solemnly told his audience that he believed every word of this.

In April 1995, the movement developed a serious public relations problem when Timothy McVeigh, an antigovernment adherant who had been associated with militias, bombed the federal building in Oklahoma City. The explosion killed 167 people (including 19 children in an onsite day care center), and injured over 650 more. One rescue worker died. It wasn’t long before the far rightists claimed the federal government really did it.

As a journalist, I covered the movement. In November 1996, I attended the travelling “Preparedness Expo” which was a survivalist/militia trade show. It claimed to promote “peace of mind in our changing world” through “self-reliant living” and “emergency preparedness.” The Denver Coliseum hosted the event, which featured 125 booths advertising sprout cultivation, homeopathic remedies, gas masks, blow guns, bee pollen tablets, home schooling supplies, radiation exposure kits, survival gear and freeze-dried food. This consumer show was supposed to prepare you for economic instability, natural disasters, political unrest and nuclear war as well as threats to your health and personal freedoms.

You could also buy numerous buttons, t-shirts and bumper stickers denouncing or ridiculing Bill and Hillary Clinton. There were bumper stickers, which said “Mark Fuhrman for President” and “The Miracle of AIDS — Turns Fruits Into Vegetables” and “Gays, Liberals, Antigunners — Use Them for Crash Dummies.”

You could get a T-shirt that simply declared “Christian American Heterosexual Pro-Gun Conservative — Any Questions?” or you could be more belligerent with a T-shirt which said “Some People Are Alive Simply Because It’s Illegal to Kill Them.” If you hated U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, you could purchase a T-shirt with a cartoon of Reno as a bulldog named “Butch” urinating on a “Liberty Tree.”

played photos of what he claimed were foreign United Nations troops and military vehicles which have been mysteriously proliferating in isolated rural locations throughout the United States over the last few years. He recommended that his listeners read a tabloid newspaper called The Spotlight, which had a booth and has promoted the wild stories about strange military maneuvers. The paper was published by the now defunct Liberty Lobby, a group which claimed to be “nationalist” and “populist” but was a thinly disguised neo-Nazi outfit.

Then Trochmann suddenly flashed a picture of a Lenin statue. He paused and cryptically said that the monument had just been erected in Seattle. He urged his audience to “bury your weapons, bury your food.” He also noted that lead-based paint was banned at the same time as the first satellite went into orbit. “...You can’t see through lead,” he sort of explained.

This raised some questions. Had the commies taken over Seattle when we weren’t looking? Was lead-based paint banned because the federal government spooks wanted to spy on all of us with their satellites?

I later did some research and found out that there is really a statue of Lenin in a Seattle park. It is a 16-foot and seven ton bronze Lenin striding boldly and backed by flames and firearms. An American teacher in Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia) found it in a scrapyard. He thought it was a work of art worth preserving.

It was easy to laugh at the absurd notions of the far right back then, but there was also a very ominous side.

The Colorado Civil Rights Division warned against “notable anti-government extremists and white supremacists” appearing at the expo. When he first became a public figure, John Trochmann admitted to some reporters that he was an adherent of Christian Identity, a North American theological movement, which believes that white northern Europeans are the true “Israelites,” that Jews are satanic imposters and that people of color are an inferior species of soulless animals known as mudpeople. Then he denied saying this. He admitted that he’d visited the neoNazi Aryan Nations compound a couple of times. “Once it was for a bagpipe festival. I love bagpipes,” he said. This provoked Richard Butler, the head of the Aryan Nations, to call Trochmann an “anti-Christ.” Butler said Trochmann came over many times.

Two other prominent speakers at Denver’s expo, “Bo” Gritz and Jack McLamb, also had a tendency to cover up their involvement with white supremacists, neoNazis and the Christian Identity movement.

A former Green Beret commander in Vietnam, Gritz was a national radio talk show host and one of the most influential figures in the patriot/militia movement.

He gave a speech entitled “Are We in The Biblical End Times?” He had a paramilitary training program called SPIKE — Specially Prepared Individuals for Key Events. He instructed his fellow patriots in rappelling, small arms combat, first aid, lock picking, food storage, weapons caching and other “survivalist” skills. Yeah, lock picking.

Jack McLamb was a former Phoenix, Arizona, police officer who was recruiting cops into the patriot/militia movement. He claimed that the 1992 Los Angeles riots were orchestrated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to “test American reactions to the imposition of martial law.”

Looking back at the antigovernment movement of the 1990s makes it easier to understand the Alt-Right-driven Trump wing of the Republican Party.

KHNC Radio is still broadcasting. Today, the station carries the Alex Jones show. Last year, Jones said the feds were invading Texas. He said that a military training exercise in Texas called “Jade Helm 15” was part of a coup by Obama who planned to stay in office beyond 2017.

Jones has claimed that the September 11 terrorist attacks, the Oklahoma City bombing and the Boston Marathon bombing were “false flag” intelligence operations of the federal government. So was the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre he claims, saying that there wasn’t even a massacre but rather a hoax with child actors.

Jones and Donald Trump lavish praise on each other. Trump said to him, “Your reputation is amazing. I will not let you down.” Recently, Jones said, “It is surreal to talk about issues here on air and then word-for-word hear Trump say it two days later.”

Yes, it is surreal. And as history has shown, very dangerous as well.

Lightening the load for organic certification

O

rganic certification comes at a hefty cost — anywhere from $800 to $2,500. But Colorado companies can get some of that money back, at least for the next few years.

The Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA), through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), is offering financial assistance for organic certification.

The cost-share program allows companies to apply for reimbursement of 75 percent of the costs of certification, up to $750.

“It’s available to any certified organic operations, farms, livestock operations, processers that are certified by a USDA accredited organic certification agent and can provide the documentation that verifies their certification,” says Amy Stafford, organic program manager with CDA. Organic companies who’ve already been certified or continued certification in the last year have until Nov. 15 to apply.

Certification is a three-step process. First, applicants must submit an organic plan for review. If they comply with the organic program requirements, including not using prohibited substances for three years, they undergo an inspection, which can take hours up to an entire day. Finally the administering company reviews the inspection report before issuing the certificate. The whole process takes 12 to 16 weeks.

“You have to answer lots of questions and demonstrate that you really kept good records and you have to keep labels for everything you bring onto the farm,” says David Tresemer, owner of Earthstar Farms, an herb growing and wildcrafting operation. “Nothing there is unreasonable, but it’s become much more thorough than in the past.”

Coloradans can seek organic certification from the CDA, or a number of private organizations accredited

by the USDA. Each organization is allowed to set their rates and fee schedule for certification.

The CDA has a base rate of $400 and goes up from there, Organic dried depending on where the herbs from Earthstar farms. income is derived. For a dairy farm, the fee might be based on heads of cattle, while a crop operation would be charged on acreage.

“Some certifiers might base their fee schedule on a percent of sales,” Stafford says. “We don’t do that, we base it on what you’re actually producing.”

The USDA disburses reimbursement funds to all 50 states through the National Organic Certification Cost Share Program as part of the Agricultural Act of 2014, more commonly known as the Farm Bill. This year, the government allocated $11.5 million, with $198,672 going to Colorado.

The federal funding goes to the states who actually take advantage of it, with each state receiving funds based on their previous use and the top 10 states in organic farms or organic sales getting 70 percent of the funds. The past two years Colorado, number nine in organic sales, received increased funding because the state used up its previous allotment.

“This year I can’t say that the funds will be available if somebody applies on the last day because in the past it’s been kind of a close thing,” Stafford says. “So the earlier the better for people that want to apply.”

Congress passes the Farm Bill every five years or so — the last bill expired in 2012 and wasn’t reupped until 2014 — but there’s no telling whether financial assistance for organic certification will be included next time.

Boulder companies say the rebate is nice, but they don’t rely on it and they’ll stay organic regardless.

“[Being organic] is just, something I believe in,” says Chris Asher, owner of Asher Brewing. “I think it’s better for the environment, better for consumers.”

Six years ago Asher became the first all organic brewery in Colorado. The rebate has been available four of those six years. Certification costs Asher around $2,000 and he gets $750 back.

“It’s just kind of an added bonus I guess to get that back,” Asher says. “We’ve done it in years where they didn’t offer the rebate. We would do it anyway.

We’re kind of committed to it at this point.”

Earthstar Farms, located in Boulder’s Sunshine Canyon, is also dedicated to growing organic, rebate or no. The farm has been in operation since 1987 and has been USDA certified organic since 1990. Back then, Earthstar’s recertification was a six-page form, now it’s closer to 70. Tresemer says that although the process of certification has become onerous, it’s necessary.

“Being certified is the right thing,” Tresemer says.

“The inspections are challenging and that’s appropriate. They are hours in length, but you know it’s really somebody trying to determine that you’re acting in good faith and obeying the regulations and that’s fine.”

Although the cost of certification is higher than it’s been in the past, it’s not the bulk of costs for organic companies. Growing organic means eschewing inexpensive chemicals in favor of increased labor, buying expensive fertilizer instead of cheap products like sewage sludge, and waiting longer from crops and livestock to grow without the aid of growth hormones.

Whether the Farm Bill has a kickback for organic certifiers in the future is uncertain, but Boulder’s position on organics is not. It’s here to stay

Unless relocation is done with extreme care and best practices (nest boxes/ artificial burrows, weeks spent carefully live trapping as many prairie dogs as possible) many individuals may die during the process, ultimately killing off the colony.

he Reel Rock Film Tour is back, and this year the weekend-long adventure film series is paying homage to those folks who show us the ropes, lift us up, help us down, remind us to eat and make us laugh.

Reel Rock 11 is serving up several climbing adventure stories highlighting the benefits of climbing buddies, from a father-daughter team to the ultimate boys trip in the Arctic Circle. The tour will premier to a packed audience at Chautauqua Auditorium in Boulder on Sept. 15, 2016.

But no worries if you’re not a climber.

“Some people come to Reel Rock because they love the stunning scenery, or they want to be inspired by the badass climbing,” says Nick Rosen, creative director of Sender Films, a Boulder-based production company that co-produces the Reel Rock Tour with Big UP Productions.

“Or, they come because they are intrigued by human stories,” Rosen adds. “That’s why we try to have something for everyone.”

Peter Mortimer, founder of Sender Films, says they choose stories that have interesting characters and rich narratives because they believe these are the aspects that cause the viewer to become invested in a story; to feel a real connection, not only to the goals these athletes are trying to achieve, but with the characters themselves and the struggles they face.

Mortimer discovered this “formula” while creating his first climbing film, Scary Faces.

“These people living this alternative life, they’re such individuals and colorful characters, I really wanted to capture that and I wanted to have a nar-

Will Stanhope and local Matt Segal are featured in “Boys in the Bugs,” which documents their four-year project to scale the Tom Egan Memorial Route, a 1,500-foot splitter crack up the east face in the Bugaboos of British Columbia.

“There were times where I was definitely lagging, he was the motivational upper, and vise verse,” Stanhope says of pairing up with Segal. “I can’t see it working with another partner, and it definitely wouldn’t have worked as a solo project, or recruiting random people. Definitely a collaborative process, and having a funloving, super funny partner was critical.”

In 2009, Stanhope repelled down in the Bugaboos to check for new routes, an exploratory journey that led to his future four-year climbing project. Initially Stanhope noticed that the first 60 feet posed an issue for freeing the climb because the crack is too thin to access with fingers, but after working a variation he was able to find a route to surpass this section and make the complete 13 pitch climb free. The Sender Film crew got their hands on one of the pictures Stanhope snapped of the crack climb and contacted the climbers about filming them for a Reel Rock film.

“There are few guys that exemplify pure love for the sport and have the ability to sacrifice everything in their lives to pull off this crazy thing,” Rosen says. “No one exemplifies that more than Will and Matt.”

Of course four years can’t be completely documented, allowing the boys plenty of time to figure out variations and grind out moves on their own, but both Stanhope and Segal agree that the presence of the film crew was invigorating. In particular the climbers mention Brett Lowell, of Big UP Productions.

“It was great to have some fresh energy up there,” Stanhope says. “It was the turning point. It was definitely a positive thing to have those guys up there. Brett is a real deal climber, so having him up on the wall with fresh eyes on the pitches was super helpful.”

Stanhope sent it clean, but Segal was not able to completely free the climb because of the 5.14 crux.

“We put so much effort into it together that it was really just a partnership accomplishment because one of us did it,” Segal says.

Mike Libecki, true devoted adventurer with almost 70 ascents under his belt, teams up with daughter, Lillianna Libecki, showing that an adventure seeker can also be an awesome father. Libecki says he believes the film “Rad Dad” will inspire parents to get their kids out in nature more, and show how much nature can be used as a learning instrument for life’s lessons.

“I really want her, from the examples I’ve set for her, to learn that really no matter what, you have to believe in your own passion and make it happen,” says Libecki. “To not do what anyone wants or society puts upon you; to have her absolutely follow her true own goals and passions.”

‘Dodo’s Delight’ One of Rosen’s and Mortimer’s favorite segments, “Dodo’s Delight,” follows the rowdy crew made up of adventurers Sean Villanueva O’Driscoll, Ben Ditto and brothers Nico and Olivier Favresse on an epic three-month trip traveling the Arctic Circle on a sailboat captained by colorful 79-year-old retired reverend and British Royal Marine Bob Shepton. The climbing adventure crew used rock-paper-scissors, to make all the tough decisions, like who gets what bunk, who goes first, who gets partnered up and who climbs what route. They filled their free time with music, playing into the wee hours, says Ditto, a well-known photographer and climber. He says he plays a mean pair of spoons during their music sessions in the film.

“These guys, with plenty of down time and a bunch of cameras, filming themselves, really represents the essence of what makes climbing and adventure great to me,” Rosen says. “There is just a sense of joy that pervades the whole thing.”

According to Rosen, since all the footage in the film was shot by the crew, it created a freshness to the film that they could never have captured if Sender Films had shot it. The fact that all the songs that appear in the segment were actually created and performed by the crew is another reason the segment will stand out as unique. Many of the songs, because of Villanueva O’Driscoll’s influence, are Irish folk, and their theme song, “Dodo’s Delight,” was inspired by their not so swanky boat Dodo.

“In the film, the way these characters carry on with their lives and their adventure, it has the potential to change climbing culture as people begin to appreciate it, especially because of the music, and the lighthearted way they face hardship,” Ditto says.

Mortimer says the tour will be more of an event this year, with vendors, free samples and athletes mingling with the crowd. Screenings will also be filmed this year, edited and posted, which Mortimer hopes will keep the hype going, provide a great feedback loop and allow those who have always wanted to attend the premier in Boulder a sneak peek.

According to Mortimer, capturing, collaborating and presenting the next big movement in climbing as well as staying cutting edge in film making, and doing right by the athletes, is what they constantly are striving for, which he admits, is quite a bit of pressure they put on themselves. Luckily, according to Rosen, climbing is always evolving, new standards are always being created, as well as new styles and personalities continuously emerging, so there will always be fresh content to cover and share.

“Climbing is just so built for story telling,” Rosen says. “It just lends itself so well because this idea of having this dream, trying to do something, trying to get to the top of something, and then all the obstacles, the journey, the training, the relationships, all the things that characters have to go through to achieve, its just so simple and relatable to anyone, on any level. It’s the gift that keeps giving as a storyteller.”

How lonely does it get?

The story of local painter Bradley Books

I

first met Bradley Books seven years ago through a thin piece of plexiglass.

Sitting inside the staff office at the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless, I watched him through the pane as he approached in his wheelchair — a tall, thin and handsome young man who wore a defiant but weary smile on his lips as if to foreshadow all of the greatness that was to come from his pain.

Bradley wasn’t always homeless. He grew A page from B. fundraiser for Firehouse Art Center and on Sept. 21 he will hold a launch party for the release of his first coloring book, B. Rad Coloring Book 1, at Magic Fairy Candles where it will also be available for sale. It is this wave of recent success that brings me to his basement apartment for a studio tour and interview.

Slits of light barely squeeze through closed blinds to bring a dusty glow to the otherwise dark room. The space is full, almost cluttered, but more like brimming with art stuff — artifacts, books, paints, yarn, mementos of inspiration. And the walls are covered with Bradley’s own paintings from floor to ceiling, with more stacked on the floor.

One of his paintings in progress lies casually on the floor with a gold frame placed loosely on top, adding a touch of refinement and hinting at the impending moment of completion. “Of Course the Purple” is an enchanting painting done in hues of purple acrylic and overlaid with black line drawings of creatures, stick figures and geometric symbols.

In the artistic flurry, I neglected to notice his newfound mobility.

“It was in a moment like this when I decided to stop using my cane,” he says. “I was outside with my cane, coffee and cigarette and the thought in my head was, ‘Which crutch do I want to get rid of?’ And I chose the cane. Now I just have the other two. Isn’t it strange how little thoughts like those are the ones that stop you from feeling breakable and show you that you’re bendable instead? In bending back

towards myself. I open up all of my experience into a palette that I then use to make art.”

For Bradley, making art isn’t just about creating, it is about sharing and healing. Two years ago, when he first exhibited paintings at Firehouse Art Center, he was invited by then Executive Director Jessica Kooiman Parker to speak to a group from Imagine!, a program for adults with mental disabilities, who were coming in to tour the exhibition.

“I talked to them about my process,” he says. “I usually pick up the colors prior to the painting which are related to the emotions that spring out. I do layers upon layers. Sometimes a painting will be painted just to express something that I needed to, and then I will do a painting on top of that painting to balance it all out.

Sarah Haas Maybe the rage is what brought me to paint, but it is not what I want to express so I use it as the backbone of the painting and then paint a lightness on top. But if you follow the brush strokes, it can pull you back down to what is underneath, or take you back out, I guess.”

The tour was so successful that it spawned Art of Possibilities, a program inspired by Book’s own experience with art as therapy and for which he serves as co-facilitator and mentor. The program brings groups of 25 adults with disabilities from Imagine! into the art center to tour each exhibition, discuss the art and then create their own pieces. After two years, the program is going strong and growing.

“I actually bought a piece of his work, ‘NoBo Hobo,’ from that first January show,” Kooiman Parker says. “He can really paint emotions and tell a story that has a different effect on you than other paintings. For me what is so striking is the vulnerability that is there on the canvas. You can feel a lot of different things just by looking at it, you can be sad and happy at the same time, tapping into this other world that not a lot of people can see, or even if they can they can’t express. It is an innocent perspective yet it is dark.”

Bradley calls this the high lonesome, drawing on the bluegrass and folk musical traditions that he loves so much.

“I don’t think of myself as happy or unhappy, those emotions seems sort of trite and unimportant — it is bubble gum and hot air for me,” he says. “Life is a relentless succession of moments and I operate in sort of general anxiety, almost like it comforts me. And then I piece all the experience and all the anxiety together in someway and turn it into a poem or a painting or a drawing.”

He pauses for a moment and exhales a plume of cigarette smoke. “But my favorite is the clouds,” he says. “The birds in flight and their shadows. Art is just what there is.”

ael Naim is on the path of discovery. In her 2008 hit breakout song “New Soul” she sings, “I’m a new soul/I came to this strange world/ Hoping I could learn a bit ’bout how to give and take/But since I came here, felt the joy and the fear/finding myself, making every possible mistake.”

Almost a decade Girlie Action Media later, Naim says she still feels connected to “New Soul” and the message it contains — accepting that life isn’t perfect.

On her new album, Older, Naim continues to explore that same sentiment.

“It’s just discovering yourself all the time with new experiences and how you handle those experiences. Sometimes you are handling them, like, really badly,” she says with a laugh. “But it’s fine. I just try to forgive myself and try to handle it a better way.”

It’s been six years since Naim’s last album, She Was a Boy. Released last year, Older is her latest collaboration with partner David Donatien. The pair has spent the past 12 years making music, each bringing their own background and culture to the sound.

Donatien is from the West Indies, and Naim grew up in Israel but has lived in Paris since she was 21. He has a background in jazz and percussion, and she comes from a classical music tradition.

“We have a vision of the world as an open place, and it’s the same thing for music,” she says. “For us, when we’re doing music, what we’re looking for is to join each other, his culture and my culture. It’s like having many, many colors and wanting to use them to create something new that excites you.”

Sep emotionally charged period for the musicians — they had their first child together and Naim lost her grandmother.

“I understood for the first time that life is short. [With] every choice [I] make, I want to enjoy the time I still have on Earth,” she says. “On one hand it led to some panic. ... On the other hand, I don’t think I was ever that

happy in my life.”

The dichotomy between new life and death swings the music on the new album between extreme moods. In the upbeat “Make a Child,” Naim contemplates motherhood in a singsong voice, “You can make a child/but you’re gonna have to dive through/I feel so alive/Going to jump into the big blue.”

But the title song is considerably slower and stiller as Naim bids a sorrowful goodbye to her grandmother: “Now here’s our story/my eyes are blurry/but please don’t worry/The light will take you high/ you can fly.”

One of the most poignant songs on the album is the menacing “Coward,” a melodic musing on the fears of becoming a parent. In a haunting dance, a children’s choir chants as Naim sings, “I truly thought I was prepared/But now I’m panicked and I’m scared/How

did I become a coward?”

By writing the song, Naim was able to process her concerns of losing time and freedom as she entered parenthood.

“I was already imagining missing the person I was, and all that was about to change,” she says. “The fear to let go of everything, to go to a new place that is completely frightening because it’s the unknown. I was so afraid that it would be so scary. I did have my moment of panic, and then ‘Coward’ was born.

“Only that saying it and being aware of it, it helped me to not be afraid anymore. And of course the reality was so not scary,” she continues.

“If you hide it, it’s something that can really hurt you. But just to say it and let it out, it’s OK. So what? I’m fine.

Nothing horrible happened after saying it and people will continue to love you, and they’ll help you.

So it only brings good.”

And after the birth of her child, Naim says everything was different, in a good way.

“I didn’t expect this type of love. I didn’t imagine it,” she says. “It’s impossible to be described, even if people try to tell you. It changed because you do lose a little part of freedom or a little part of time, but it’s like discovering a new planet,” she says.

By admitting her “cowardice” in her personal life, she gained bravery in her work. And on the path of self-discovery, Naim has gained more confidence. “[Having a child] changed the fact maybe when I do something now there’s less hesitation, and I see everything more clear, and I know what I want, and I know what I don’t want,” she says. “When I do have the time to create, it goes out immediately. There’s no hesitation.”

n Oct. 8, The Dairy Arts Center will present a concert titled “World Beat,” but that enticing title could easily be applied to most of The Dairy calendar this fall.

“World Beat” features music from Turkey, Japan and Venezuela. It’s hard to know exactly when people started recycling. In the 11th century, Japan began “re-pulping” used paper. In the 19th century, the Salvation Army began collecting used goods, with the purpose of recycling them.

During World War II and the great depression, metal, rubber and nylon are recycled as part of the war effort.

And in 1976, as part of the nation’s burgeoning recycling movement, Eco-Cycle began using old school buses to launch curbside recycling in Boulder. As Colorado’s first curbside and residential recycling program, the nonprofit has become a leader in building zero waste communities across the country and worldwide while continually advocating for policies such as Boulder’s required citywide recycling and composting program.

Help celebrate both the achievements and future of one of the nation’s largest nonprofit recyclers at the anniversary gala in the Glen Miller Ballroom on Sept. 8.

very Labor Day weekend since 1974, filmmakers, critics, historians, students, moviegoers and a handful of outdoorsmen and women converge on the quaint little mountain town of Telluride, Colorado to celebrate the past and present of their beloved art form. They come to the Telluride Film Festival, one of the best in the world, not for red carpets, galas, awards or competition, but for the simple, unadulterated pleasure of sitting in a theater with 650 people and watching images unfold on a giant screen. It’s a sight worth savoring.

Now in its 43rd iteration, the Telluride Film Festival is known for showcasing movies that will shape the back half of the year’s releases — with a few of them cleaning up some of the major awards. And this year’s lineup is a promise of positive things to come. The first festival movie to make it to neighborhood screens is Sully, a dramatic retelling of US Airways Flight 1549 and Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger’s “Miracle on the Hudson.” Tom Hanks plays Capt. Sully in director Clint Eastwood’s dual examination of an ordinary man in an extraordinary situation and the posttraumatic stress generated from such an event. Sully opens Sept. 9.

Werner Herzog’s latest, Into the Inferno, makes its way to Netflix on Oct. 28, but should the opporTelluride Film Festival standout, Moonlight is set for tunity arise to see this documentary in theaters, do not hesitate to see it big and hear it loud. Herzog teams with volcanologist Clive Oppenheimer to study the awesome and destructive power of active volcanoes while also exploring human connection to these natural wonders through local mythologies, including a long look into North Korea’s relationship with their sacred Mount Paektu. Communist countries and animated paleontologists aside — the movie has both in spades — Into the Inferno features astounding photography and teeth-rattling sound design of magma snarling and spraying against mountains and ocean waves without remorse. Not many movies can convey such a sense of primal power, but not many filmmakers are like Herzog.

Official release dates have yet to be set for My Journey Through French Cinema — filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier’s sweeping and heartfelt survey of his fellow countryman’s best work — and Bright Lights, a warts-and-all look at the mother-daughter relationship of Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fischer. Both docs are a must for cinephiles, but with Reynolds’ and Fischer’s snappy repartee, Bright Lights is destined to draw in the Gilmore Girls crowd, leaving them begging for more.

But as good as the above are, and they are quite good, they are all known quantities. What makes Telluride, indeed any film festival, such a memorable experience are the discoveries. And this year, that honor belongs to Moonlight, director Barry Jenkins’ rousing, personal and poetic triptych about a gay black man coming of age in Miami.

Told in three parts — youth, teenage, adult — Moonlight is a gripping drama that explores the basic need of identification. From the use of Boris Gardiner’s silkysmooth lyrics in the opening to a startling conclusion that harkens back to François Truffaut’s The 400 Blows, Moonlight is simply potent. It opens on Oct. 21, and I’m already excited to see it again.

oulder is not a town in which there is great need to extol the virtues of healthy eating... healthy anything, really. While every choir needs a little preaching to from time to time, let us step away from the pulpit for this message. (For those squeamish about eating meat, consider yourself warned.)

Place yourself in this scenario, if you will: You’ve just clocked 20-some miles on your bike through the Buffalo Creek Big Loop (or you’ve spent a day in the back bowls of Vail, or completed your third IRONMAN this month, or just spent 10 days biking from Boulder to Black Rock City so you could dance in the dust and run the Burning Man 50K — looking at you, Ryan Van Duzer). Now you’re back in Boulder and you’ve worked up an appetite that won’t be sated easily. You need food: warm food, healing food and maybe a beer.

You’re gonna hurt tomorrow, but today you celebrate with comfort food.

And what, as Americans, is more comforting than a hamburger (perhaps with a beer to wash it all down)? Burgers are simplistic in nature — just meat between bread, maybe some accoutrements like lettuce or tomato — but maybe that’s where the comfort lies, in the simplicity. And this town isn’t lacking in options for amazing hamburgers, but let’s talk for a moment about Boulder’s newest hamburger joint, Eureka!.

can food without coming across like a typical chain restaurant; ingredients are locally sourced when possible, and the beer and spirit lists showcase some of Colorado’s finest.

There are ribs and steaks and burritos, oh my, but what you want to try at Eureka! is a bone marrow burger.

You may have heard that bone marrow — the squishy stuff inside bones — is pretty good for you... to eat... because of course it’s good for you to have in your bones. In fact, it’s a delicacy in many cuisines.

From Native American tribes to traditional Chinese

medicine, bone marrow is known to ease digestion, build immunity and even fight leukemia.

I’m not saying that Eureka!’s bone marrow burger will cure cancer or soothe IBS, but I am saying it will sate your hunger after a 20-mile bike ride or a five-minute walk from the car to the restaurant.

Eureka! creates a bone marrow porcini mushroom butter to top what I am assuming is a halfpound hamburger patty.

Charbroiled onions are layered on top, with roasted Roma tomato and mustard aioli, all sandwiched between a toasted, sesame-seed bun. The result is a richly decadent bite, where the oven-roasted tomatoes melt right into the buttery burger patty and the onions provide a delicate crunch and a hint of caramelized sweetness to an otherwise umami flavor. The mustard aioli compliments the sweetness of the caramelized onions with just a touch of bitter.

The flavor of the bone marrow is subtle in the porcini butter, like the hint of bone one gets while eating ribs.

In case you haven’t been on a 20-mile bike ride and feel a little gluttonous eating the whole bone marrow burger, you might consider splitting this monster (served with handcut fries and truffle sauce in which to dip them) with a friend. But if you don’t split it, no judgment here. There’s always time for a bike ride later...

You don’t have to be a carnivore to appreciate whole-animal butchery

E

very ham you bake and every breakfast link you sizzle starts out exactly the same way with a hog dying and its carcass being disassembled. It’s a fact that most American carnivores don’t want to face most of the time even as they refer to various tasty body parts from shoulders to belly.

There is an old saying attributed to cranky Prussian Otto von Bismarck: “Laws are like sausages, it is better not to see them being made.”

The idea is that if you observed what went into making sausages you would be less inclined to eat them.

My philosophy as a semi-carnivore is that unless you are willing to watch the sausage (and pork chops and coppa) being made, you shouldn’t eat it. It lessens the horrible disconnection Americans have from their food sources.

I’ve attended animal butchery demonstrations in the past but recently jumped at a chance for a refresher course at the home of Loree Mulay, co-owner of Longmont-based Mulay’s Sausage. The company makes hot Italian, bratwurst, breakfast links and chorizo sausage sold frozen at Natural Grocers and other markets. Mulay says she only uses humanely raised, antibiotic-free lean, whole muscle meat so the links are juicy but not greasy as well as free of gluten, see NIBBLES Page 44

Like some sort of Paleo Picasso with a blade as a brush, butchery expert and instructor Jason Nauert carefully works through the muscles, bones and sinews of half a hog, in this case a Duroc heirloom breed raised in Brush. The cuts are smaller and the meat is much darker and tastier than factory-farmed pigs.

As he works, Nauert talks about whole-animal butchery, respecting the animal and not wasting any piece of the pig. “You save these parts, the face meat, for head cheese,” he says. Head cheese is a non-dairy product consisting of pig bits suspended in gelatin and sliced as cold cuts.

“Ah, leaf lard,” Nauert says. That’s the stuff you want to render to make the flakiest pie crusts on the planet. The pigskin is fried for chicharrones, the bones make stock for pork green chile, he says.

He points out the picnic shoulder, the Boston butt and the tenderloin and cut off the jowl for guincale — a form of bacon. “That’s a 2-inch ‘man chop’ there. I like pork chops thick. You leave the fat until you finish cooking because that’s where all the flavor really is,” he says. He identifies out the cuts used for porchetta, a boneless pork roast, and lardo, seasoned, marinated fat sliced thin on bruschetta and pizza.

It’s a revelation the first time you watch a skilled butcher using short, sharp, curved knives and a flexible handsaw, but not for the squeamish who have watched too many horror films. The talk here is all about spines, blood, livers and recognizable body parts, but even vegetarians and vegans can appreciate an artisan who insists on using literally all parts of a hog. It’s about knowing the source of the meat you eat and how it was treated from birth to death. That’s not something you can know about the shrink-wrapped pork loin at the supermarket that came from a huge, anonymous factory-farmed hog. see NIBBLES Page 46

My periodic craving for spankopita brought me to the Mediterranean Market & Deli, 2690 28th St. (facing Bluff Street). I love dipping the filo dough-wrapped spinach hand pie in thick yogurt sauce, a dab of sriracha sauce and zataar, a great dip made with wild thyme and olive oil. I like the market’s pie because it isn’t drenched in butter like the usual Greek variation. Opened in 2006, the deli overseen by Libyan-born Salem Garni also sells gyros, falafel, hookahs and imported foods including Milka chocolate bars, pistachio candies and Bosnian and Turkish canned goods.

From their Brewing Co. 3201 Walnut award-winning Big Shot (6.0% ABV), a St., Boulder, 303-786-9270. twistedpinebrewing.com robust espresso stout that should be served with a warm buttered croissant; to Billy’s Chilies (5.2%), a wheat ale featuring the potent expressions of five peppers: Anaheim, Fresno, Serrano, jalapeño and habanero; to seasonal specialties like the cucumber cream ale Homeslice (5.6%), cucumbers never tasted so good; and the ghoulish Ghost Face Killah (5.2%), a beer so spicy I had to walk away from it and wait for my courage, and taste buds, to recover. Twisted Pine has 24 beers on tap for the adventurous and the conservative drinkers alike. The only caveat: You have to come here to try Susan France them. As of June 1, 2016, Twisted Pine Brewing ceased distribution.

According to Amy Russell — Twisted Pine’s director of possibilities — the discussion around discontinuing distribution started 12 months ago. While this would mean a blow to the clientele outside of the Centennial state, it would offer a plethora of opportunities for Twisted Pine to engage more with the Boulder County community. On the company’s blog, Head Brewer Kay Witkiewicz points out that this change gives Twisted Pine a chance to embrace who they really are: “[P]roud brewers who want to serve our Boulder community one pint at a time.”

Gordon Knight founded Twisted Pine in 1995 and then sold it to Bob Jean-Francois Lalonde, Ale House Baile of Peak to Peak Brewing a years manager at Twisted Pine Brewing Co. later. In 2003, Twisted Pine moved to its current location on Walnut Street and added the Ale House. Three more expansions brought the facility to what it is today, which includes a full kitchen serving lunch and dinner. There is no doubt that distribution helped Twisted Pine build their brand and draw attention to the Ale House, but with so much of the focus on the product and the place, why worry about how the beer is performing on someone else’s shelves?

“To me, brewing is about control, creativity, and pride,” Witkiewicz’s post continues. “We control our brewing parameters as tightly as possible to craft the best beers possible. Packaging and distribution rob us brewers of control because we don’t know if our beers are being cared for the way we cared for them in the brewhouse and in the cellar.”

Precise control allows Twisted Pine to pour a perfect pint of Raspberry Rising (5.2%) — like drinking raspberry-flavored Cheerios, if such a thing existed — but it also allows them the opportunity to engage with the community on a more personable level.

“In a recent survey conducted by Confluence,” Russell wrote in an email exchange with Boulder Weekly, “we determined three-quarters of our ale house customers are from Colorado’s Front Range with the majority having an active interest in a company’s community involvement, corporate social responsibility and local support.”

And Twisted Pine’s contribution to community support and local involvement — Pints with a Purpose and Party with a Purpose — “Raised over $30,000 for local nonprofits in 2015,” Russell added.

In other words, head to Twisted Pine, enjoy a pint and get involved in the local beer community. It’s the sensible thing to do.

Ginsberg became convinced that the U.S. government was somehow involved in international illegal drug trades, and he wrote many essays detailing his research and theories about the CIA’s involvement in trafficking.

But, again and again his accusations were denied and his writings rejected by publications as editor after editor refused to recognize his position as legitimate, only hastening the urgency he felt. Eventually in 1978 he received a note from an editor at the New York Times apologizing for not taking his ideas more seriously.

Ginsberg’s practical and political advocacy was complemented by his appreciation of what marijuana did for the soul. In response to claims that cannabis induced laziness and brought disruption to social efficiencies, Ginsberg argued that it brought a much needed slowing of time and opportunity to enhance perception of the world.

“Marijuana is a useful catalyst for specific optical and aural aesthetic perceptions,” he wrote in “The Great Marijuana Hoax.”

“I apprehended the structure of certain pieces of jazz & classical music in a new manner under the influence of marijuana, and these apprehensions have remained valid in years of normal consciousness ...

And I saw anew many of nature’s panoramas & landscapes that I’d stared at blindly without even noticing before; thru the use of marijuana, awe & detail were made conscious.”

In 1967 the Beats were the voice of 100,000 people who took acid and smoked pot in San Francisco to access a new way of experiencing the world.

Nearly 50 years later we are experiencing a shift in drug policy as, state by state, the U.S. undergoes a wave of legalization. Ginsberg argued that decriminalizing marijuana is a step in the right direction.

But his substantial interest lies not in utility but in the freedom to choose to experience an altered state of mind — to expand consciousness, increase awareness and shift perception.

T

he Los Angeles Times published an article last week that was a latter day incarnation of 1930s-style reefer madness.

The headline was “Marijuana: A potent disruptor for young users, whose brains are still developing.”

The writer is a veteran Times staffer named Robin Abcarian. She writes a weekly column about California culture and politics for the print edition of the paper and has covered three presidential campaigns.

She’s been with the Times since 1990.

In other words, she’s old enough and experienced enough to know better.

Ms. Abcarian begins her yarn by telling us the sad story of 23-year-old Devan Fuentes, who four years ago, “was hospitalized with psychotic symptoms after months of heavy marijuana use.”

There it is, right in the lead: reefer madness.

According to Ms. Abcarian, Mr. Fuentes “made it all the way through San Clemente High School without drinking or using drugs.”

She says he “vividly” remembers the first time he smoked pot. He was visiting a friend at Occidental College and decided “the moment had come.”

“They brought out a giant 3-foot bong,” he recalled. “I heard a lot of people don’t get high their first time, so I held it in for a long time, one large hit. Immediately, I couldn’t feel my legs.”

This was not an entirely unpleasant sensation for Fuentes, Abcarian says.

Fuentes describes his younger self as quiet, prone to depression and “sort of an outcast.”

Marijuana made him feel more extroverted, “and that,” he said, “kind of opened the door.”

Less than a year later, Abcarian says, “he crashed.”

He “vividly” remembers the moment he was in “full-blown psychosis:” “I was thinking so hard, my mind started travel-

(which are false, fixed beliefs that are held regardless of contradictory evidence).

Hallucinations and delusions are major symptoms of psychotic behavior.

Toward the end of her piece Abcarian tells us almost in passing that Fuentes was using both for a couple of months before his crack-up.

Abcarian also interviewed Mark De Antonio, director of the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital’s Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Service, for her story — who ever so gently tromped on her reefer madness narrative.

De Antonio said he often sees young patients who are having what he called “a brief psychotic reaction” to pot.

“They are intoxicated, and may be hallucinating,” De Antonio said. “They become anxious, and incredibly confused.

It’s not life-threatening. We don’t see that many kids that require hospitalization just because they are stoned out of their minds.

“The conservative, safe answer is that kids should avoid marijuana,” he added.

“The realistic answer is probably that intermittent use of marijuana — and I mean intermittent, like monthly — is not going to be harmful. But if you ‘wake and bake’ — use it when you wake up and all day till you go to sleep — I don’t think good things come from that.”

Added Tom Strouse, the hospital’s director, “It’s clear that acute [marijuana] intoxication impairs learning and memory, and if you are stoned every day as a high school student, you will be less good as a student.”

Fair enough. But exactly the same thing can be said word for word about alcohol. I’ve been writing about the drug war for more than 30 years. My experience has been that most people who are held up as examples of marijuana abusers are alcohol abusers as well. There were 1,130 words in Ms. Abcarian’s descent into reefer madness. The word “alcohol” wasn’t one of them.

And then I am back inside my body, and I start running around my room to find pieces of paper to write on.”

Terrified, he called 911. “I feel schizophrenic,” he told the dispatcher. “I am afraid I am going to hurt myself.”

Fuentes was hospitalized for nearly two weeks.

At this point in the narrative Ms. Abcarian asks the provocative question: “Could pot have triggered Fuentes’ psychosis? Or could it have exacerbated an underlying predisposition to mental illness?”

Fuentes doesn’t completely blame pot for his crack-up, but says “pot definitely played a part.”

And what else might have played a part? The psychoactive plant salvia and psilocybin mushrooms, it turns out. Both produce hallucinations (seeing and hearing things that aren’t there) and delusions

(IN CASE YOU MISSED IT) An irreverent and not always accurate view of the world

SOMEHOW, ROBOTS BABIES DON’T WORK, BUT BIRTH CONTROL DOES

The day that abstinence-only education was introduced in schools should be a day celebrated in history. From that day forth, every single teenager — or at least most, right? — to sit through one of those super fun assemblies saw the error in their loins and realized that sex was for losers, and abstinence was the only way their genitals would not catch STDs or accidentally impregnate something.

Over the decades, they’ve come up with a plethora of creative ways to shame teens... uh we mean, inform teens of the horrific consequences of having sex, such as comparing sexually active teens to dirty socks or halfeaten candy.

The latest plot to cut down on the hanky panky is robot babies. Researchers in Australia thought it’d be a genius idea to give teenage girls robot babies in order to dissuade them from having sex. (We assume that there wasn’t enough money to give the boys robot babies, after all it does take two to tango.)

Aptly named Baby Think it Over, this was a sure-fire gold mine to stop teen pregnancy all together.

Weirdly though, the program was a bust. Instead of cutting the rates, the robot babies actually increased the chance that the girls would become pregnant over girls who did not have robot babies.

But this must be the one abstinence-only education program that failed, because teen pregnancy rates are down. It can’t be due to contraception, like the study from the Journal of Adolescent Health suggests. The study attributes the drop in rates to improved and frequent use of various forms of contraception. Well, imagine that!

We know the robot baby makers are probably sad since they spent so much time and money making the metal infants. But never fear; repurpose those babies to hand out condoms and pamphlets about IUDs or the pill. Then at least they’ll be fulfilling their purpose.

CARS AND THE OVAL OFFICE

In many ways, vehicles are an iconic part of the American lifestyle, representing freedom, endless possibility, even luxury — get in the car and see where the wind takes you. Or use it to commute to work because public transportation is largely lacking in this country and you can’t afford to live in the city of your employment.

Either way, 95 percent of households in America own cars. Which we can only assume is why Autolist.com decided to poll the audience and see which car-owners are voting for what 2016 presidential candidates, all to point out the vast difference between Trump and Clinton supporters (while not bothering to figure out the carbuying trends of the majority of the American population who don’t want to see either candidate in the Oval Office this January). Regardless, the results are hardly shocking.

Clinton voters are 30 percent more likely to buy a hybrid, while Trump voters are 17 percent more like to factor in engine horsepower and torque. The most common car for Clinton supporters is the Honda Civic, while they most commonly buy Japanese cars. Trump voters overwhelmingly purchase American cars, most commonly the Ford F-150.

Where does that leave those of us jonesing for a high-powered electric truck made by a Asian American immigrant, thus defying all the odds of the overbearing auto industry that tells us such a feat is impossible? Right back where we started, plagued by the dismal presidential options voters are faced with this year. Overall, American car owners are only slightly more likely to vote for Clinton over Trump — 40 percent to 38 percent. Reassuring.
