Highroad The shame of climatechange deniers

S

hame is that queasy feeling you get when you realize you’ve done something improper, ridiculous... or just flat-out contemptible. But it’s socially invaluable, for feeling ashamed is a built-in jerk alarm, keeping most of us from doing the same embarrassing thing again.

But what if you’re not embarrassed by being a jerk? Sure enough, some individuals who rise to high places are so consumed by self-importance, self-righteousness, selfaggrandizement and all things selfish that

they feel no shame — even when their narcissism does gross harm to others. One example is the clique of prominent polluters, politicos and propagandists who are climate-change deniers. They shamefully use their prominence to enhance their own fame and fortune — while glaciers melt, oceans rise, extreme weather expands, species perish and Earth itself spins toward being unlivable.

Unable to acknowledge shame, they need help. Luckily, a feisty group called Cowboys for Liberty has stepped forward to acknowledge it for them by establishing a “Climate Deniers Hall of Shame.”

are Charles and David Koch, who’ve dumped more than $100 million into front groups opposing efforts to halt climate change; Sen. Jim Inhofe, the dotty old dean of deniers, who has called global warming a conspiracy spawned by the Weather Channel; and the former CEO of Exxon Mobil, who secretly funded hoked-up “academic” reports to discredit the science of climate change.

The Hall of Shame is fun, but it’s not a prank. It points out that climate change is not only caused by human action, but also by human inaction — and putting names and faces to the small group of humans selfishly preventing progress can help the majority of us see that we can (and must) rise up to stop them.

danish plan CU should expand in Louisville, not on South Boulder Creek

T

here’s a much better place for the University of Colorado Boulder to build its putative academic village than in the mined-out gravel pit at South Boulder Creek and U.S. 36 that it currently has its heart set on. And it’s just a few miles down the road.

It’s the old Storage Technology Corporation (StorageTek) plant site at 95th and U.S. 36 in Louisville.

First, some background: At its height, StorageTek, which made tape and disk drives for mainframe computers, had several thousand people working at its production plant and headquarters in Louisville.

However, the company became overextended and was eventually sold to Sun Microsystems in 2005.

Two years later Sun vacated StorageTek’s Louisville campus. The abandoned plant was sold to ConocoPhillips in 2008 for around $55 million. ConocoPhillips intented to build a research campus and training center on the site, which it expected would eventually accommodate 7,000 employees.

In 2009, ConocoPhillips demolished more than a dozen empty StorageTek buildings on the site, but abandoned the project in 2012 following a corporate reorganization.

In 2017, California-based Bancroft Capital contracted to buy the property, which it saw as a potential site for Amazon’s second headquarters. But the deal never closed and on July 24 of this year the property was put back on the market. An SEC filing last year valued the property at $50 million.

By almost any metric, the StorageTek property is a more desirable site for CU expansion than the South Boulder Creek gravel pit (aka CU South).

1) Unlike the CU South property, the StorageTek property isn’t in a flood hazard area. That eliminates the risk of a bunch of CU students, faculty and staff drowning if The Big One hits on South Boulder Creek.

2) While the StorageTek property would likely cost substantially more than what CU would get from selling 6 September 27 , 2018

the CU South land to Boulder, the StorageTek property is substantially larger — 432 acres versus 308 acres for CU South. It’s also a lot more usable, since development wouldn’t require a third to a half of the land be used for flood detention ponds.

3) Although the CU South site is closer to the main campus than the StorageTek site, the StorageTek site has better access. CU South is accessed primarily at the Foothills Highway/Table Mesa Drive/U.S. 36 interchange chokepoint and secondarily from Highway 93 south of Boulder. If CU South is developed, major road and interchange upgrades at both entry points will likely be required. The StorageTek site is accessed from U.S. 36, from the Northwest Parkway and from 95th street out of Louisville. Superb access was one of the reasons the property was offered to Amazon.

4) Development of the CU south site will require installation or expansion of water, sewer, gas and electric infrastructure. The StorageTek site is served by City of Louisville utilities, which are suitable for a business the size of StorageTek. 5) Then there’s the matter of future CU growth. CU’s ability to expand on the CU South site beyond its academic village is severely limited by the need for flood control and preserving natural areas. But if CU developed the academic village on the StorageTek site, it would still have about 300 acres left over for future development, an area roughly the size of the current Boulder campus.

In other words, acquiring the StorageTek site would give CU enough land to build a full-blown second campus.

Sound crazy? Think outside the box.

The biggest problem facing the University of Colorado in Boulder — and the City of Boulder — is that CU is outgrowing Boulder. That’s the main reason why it’s trying to develop CU South.

Sure, CU could pick up a few more acres between the main campus and see DANISH PLAN Page 7

letters Yes on Prop 112 Initiative 97 has been accepted onto the fall election ballot as Proposition 112, requiring all new Colorado oil and gas development not on federal land to be located at least 2,500 feet from an occupied structure or vulnerable area.

Currently, state law allows fracking operations to be within 500 feet of homes.

Already, the industry is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on promoting a no vote on the ballot in November. Citizens need to realize that existing laws regarding fracking are dangerous to the health, safety and welfare of every man, woman and child.

We need to support this commonsense regulation, providing safer setbacks.

We have experienced several recent and local incidents: the Firestone deadly methane explosion, the Windsor well fire, the Boulder study of air pollutants near the reservoir. Each of these, as well as many others, palpably demonstrate the deadly threats to society.

Living in such close proximity to oil and gas development is clearly a death sentence, if not immediately, then certainly in the future.

Fracking is an inherently dangerous industrial process, because there is an unacceptable risk of explosions and fires. Since the Firestone explosion, for example, Colorado has experienced at least 14 fires and explosions at oil and gas sites alone.

There are already nearly 129,000 oil/gas flow lines within 1,000 feet of occupied buildings, so to add thousands more is even more foolhardy, given that there have been 832 serious pipeline incidents in the U.S. in the past 20 years, causing 310 deaths and 1,229 serious injuries. In addition, pipelines

can rupture, leading to fatal explosions, like the one in Mead, Colorado, which killed one worker and seriously injured three others in 2014.

Please vote yes for Proposition 112.

Voting for Weiser Please join me in voting for Phil Weiser for Attorney General. The GOP candidate’s claim that Democratic candidate Phil Weiser lacks “courtroom experience” misses the boat: no sitting AG has tried a case since the late 1800s. Criminal justice is only a small part of the AG’s job. The AG’s main role is to be the “lawyer for the state,” an executive responsible for a large team of lawyers addressing areas of law from antitrust to consumer protection to water law, as well as advising state agencies across the board.

His level of courtroom experience is comparable to three of the past four attorneys general when they took office: Democrat Ken Salazar, and Republicans Cynthia Coffman and Gale Norton (whom Republicans did not call unqualified). Colorado’s Attorney General is not a super-prosecutor or trial attorney.

Weiser’s record of leading complex litigation to protect consumers at the U.S. Department of Justice under presidents Clinton and Obama as well as managing teams of dozens of lawyers to get rural broadband to first-responders proves he has excellent leadership experience.

He has energetically progressed from clerking for Supreme Court Justice Ginsburg to serving as the Dean of the University of Colorado’s Law School.

Arapahoe — a lot of which is in the Boulder Creek floodplain — but beyond that, further expanding the campus in Boulder will do real damage to the city in terms of congestion, noise, crowding and destruction of existing neighborhoods.

Boulder has a highly limited ability to expand its road network, and the traffic in the city is rapidly approaching the “That’s All Folks” moment. By the same token, Boulder can’t increase its

housing stock without turning into the sort of city that most people who live in the west will find claustrophobic.

And it isn’t just Boulder that’s being squeezed by CU’s growth. There’s been so much in-fill development on the campus that it’s becoming increasingly claustrophobic as well.

But CU doesn’t want to stop growing. So what’s to be done?

CU’s answer has been to build a second campus near the existing one,

which is what CU South is about.

But since CU has already decided that it’s OK to split the campus geographically by choosing to build a satellite campus on South Boulder Creek, why not build instead on a property that could accommodate a doubling of CU’s size, instead of one that is both constricted and inherently hazardous?

How might Louisville feel about this? In terms of physical impact, a CU

campus on the StorageTek property would probably be about the same as StorageTek’s was or ConocoPhillips’ would have been. And there are a lot of advantages to having a university as your town’s largest employer. Once a university sets up shop in a community, it tends to be there for centuries.

Which is more than can be said for a StorageTek or ConocoPhillips.

War on drugs is a failure The situation around our failed drug prohibition policies causing vast prison overcrowding is a stain on Colorado, and I would note on the country as a whole. A recent book called The New Jim Crow by Professor Michelle Alexander is making waves in academia, and it’s worth reading.

Alexander makes a strong case that the so-called War on Drugs is a system akin to modern slavery. It ruins lives, primarily those of black and brown and disenfranchised people, while achieving nothing tangibly positive; drug abuse and addiction levels remain as high as ever.

The real solution is compassionate policies that treat drug use as a public health issue, rather than a criminal justice issue. Portugal decriminalized all drugs in 2002 — meaning people are not arrested for possession charges — and overdoses and addiction rates have dropped sharply. The movement to allow psychedelic drugs to be used as medicines is another very important, compassionate approach that actually works. Marijuana of course needs to be legalized nationally.

The War on Drugs is indeed a massive moral and economic crisis, but there is reason for hope, as public opinion is steadily turning away from failed prohibitionist policies. Here in Colorado we could see change in this arena happen quickly — if Jared Polis is elected governor. If Walter Stapleton is elected, the nasty status quo will continue. Please vote.

Boulder County’s vaccination problem

Why some local schools have low child vaccination rates, and what public health officials are doing about it

his is not a story about why you should vaccinate your children. Every state, local and federal public health agency says you should, and if you don’t, you’re required to notify your child’s school that you didn’t, and allow your child to be quarantined in the event of an outbreak of a potentially fatal but vaccine-preventable disease like measles, polio, pertussis or diptheria.

Experts say the biggest reason is that parents don’t get information on vaccines early enough.

Environment (CDPHE) estimates vaccines save the lives of 3 million children every year, and it encourages every parent to vaccinate their kids.

Instead, this is a story about why, despite increased educational outreach, Boulder County persists in having some of the lowest child vaccination rates in the country — with some schools reporting less than 50 percent of their students are fully vaccinated — and what local and state health officials are doing to educate communities, protect vulnerable populations and prepare for potential outbreaks.

“A lot of what we are trying to do is because there’s so much misinformation and fear out there,” says Teresa Luker, Boulder County’s immunization program coordinator. “It confuses some people, especially new parents, and we just try to provide an avenue to encourage anybody who is unsure just to talk to their health care provider about their concerns so they are fully understanding how vaccines work and the risk from getting a vaccine versus getting a vaccine-preventable illness.”

Skepticism of vaccines is not unique to Boulder County.

In fact, it’s not unique to the most recent generation of parents. People were skeptical of early versions of vaccines for

smallpox going back about 1,000 years ago. But, certainly, the internet has allowed for the proliferation of dubious science, including the roundly debunked study by Andrew Wakefield that linked the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine to autism.

Lindsay Diamond, who holds a Ph. D. in molecular biology and who gave a talk at TEDxBoulder on immunization, says there are myriad reasons — some legitimate — why parents are skeptical of vaccines. The biggest reason is because parents aren’t properly educated about vaccines before bringing their child into a doctor’s office to have a big needle (often several) and some potent medicine injected into their newborns.

“I had this gut instinct that we’re just reaching parents too late,” Diamond says. “In many cases, you don’t [consider] the topic of vaccination until you’re at your pediatrician’s office, completely lacking sleep, completely stressed out, and then you’re presented with this quick decision whether to vaccinate your child.”

Diamond runs the advocacy group Community Immunity with another Ph.D., Karli Carston, and together, they help reach new parents by hosting educational events in hospitals and parent groups.

Diamond says the skepticism of vaccines is actually best represented by a bell curve — there are relatively few staunch anti-vaxxers and a similarly small amount of people who believe they’re completely safe. In Boulder, Diamond says, the largest reason for skepticism is a mistrust of pharmaceutical companies and what people see as non-natural ingredients in vaccines (like small amounts of aluminum and thimerosal, a preservative containing a type of mercury that the body processes quickly and differs from the toxic form of mercury found in fish).

“There’s this emphasis on natural living,” Diamond says.

“This organic, natural lifestyle, and now you’re presented with this preventative medicine, but it’s filled with ingredients you otherwise wouldn’t choose for yourself.”

Vaccinated rates tend to be lower in more rural and poor, urban areas, but they’re also high in affluent areas like Boulder County and Orange County, California. This is actually a harder population to convince for a number of reasons, Diamond says.

“By and large, our vaccine rates reflect the decisions of generally affluent, well-educated, Caucasian populations.

Not surprisingly there isn’t a lot of government funding to tackle that problem,” Diamond says.

Rachel Herlihy, the state epidemiologist with CDPHE, says her department works with local public health agencies to provide information to parents. The CDPHE has been collecting vaccination rates from schools throughout the state for years, but just last year started making that information available online, so parents who want their children to go to schools with high vaccination rates can do some home research.

state working to actively engage parents well before they have to make a vaccination decision. Luker says Boulder County parents are invited to attend meetings with physicians, school officials and other parents to discuss vaccinations. But that may not be enough to encourage parents who are on the skeptical side of the bell curve to attend.

Students in Colorado are required to get a panel of vaccines, including the one for MMR, and those for polio, tetanus, diptheria and pertussis, chickenpox, hepatitis B, and certain bacterial diseases. However, parents can opt out either though a medical exemption (a child is unable to get a vaccine for legitimate health reasons) or a personal/religious exemption. Getting a personal/ religious exempPublic domain tion is as simple as filling out a form and submitting it to the CDPHE. Anne Nadelson is the lower school administrator at Shining Mountain Waldorf School in Boulder, which has a fully vaccinated rate around 62 percent or below for most of the required vaccines.

A personal exemption is the main reason cited for those relatively low rates. Nadelson says Shining Mountain does not provide educational materials outside of what’s available from public health agencies to parents.

“We don’t have these conversations with parents because that’s consistent with state law,” Nadelson says.

“Decisions about vaccinations are made by parents in consultation with their children’s health care providers. We don’t engage in these conversations. We strive to be an inclusive community. We know based on the numbers we don’t have every child fully vaccinated.

According to the law, that’s OK in Colorado. ... I actually don’t know why people choose to vaccinate or not.”

Shining Mountain, other Waldorf schools, and schools in certain Boulder County communities like Jamestown and Gold Hill have similarly high personal exemption rates, creating “pockets,” which the CDPHE’s Herilhy says are of particular concern.

“It’s really those smaller counties or individual small communities or play groups or small towns where the numbers really count,” Herlihy says, “where if you see the immunization rate isn’t high enough for a particular disease, we Boulder Weekly

know that community could be at risk.”

A certain amount of any population needs to be vaccinated in order to achieve what’s known as herd immunity — if, say, 95 percent of a community gets the MMR vaccine, those diseases are far less likely to infiltrate the community than if the rate was even 90 percent. Herlihy says “a certain percentage of the population” won’t respond to vaccines, and so even if a child gets a vaccine, a low herd immunity rate may allow a disease to enter a community, and affect both vaccinated and unvaccinated children, and kids in early grades, who are more susceptible to contracting vaccine-preventable diseases because of their undeveloped immune systems.

Vaccinepreventable diseases have cropped up in recent years — a measles outbreak hit Boulder in 2013, and a recent Southwest flight had to be medically cleared after a passenger was identified to have measles.

Measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases are easily spread, and so if one person gets it and brings it into a community that has not met a herd immunity quota, it could create a health crisis.

This education, Diamond says, needs to be spread. Even though Boulder County has raised its total immunization rates to somewhere around 90 percent in recent years, that is still below average and still poses a major health risk.

“I think in the end, the most clean data we’ve received from CDPHE, it puts across [BVSD] as 89-90 percent [fully immunized], and I think to the average person that seems like that would be fine. At least for me, you think B-plus, we’re doing well,” Diamond says. “I think it’s really hard to convey the messaging that the difference between 85 and 89 percent is the difference between major gaps in public health and [total community] health.”

Luker says Boulder County does “have an outbreak protocol.” The state and the school would be responsible for removing sick and vulnerable students, and Nadelson says Shining Mountain has records on every student’s vaccination history and would work with the state to appropriately handle an outbreak.

’ve been told by a number of people who’ve taken sanctuary inside the walls of religious institutions that their state of mind is very much tied to their ability to see outside. They say looking out windows reminds them of the life they once had and is one of the only ways of keeping tabs on a world that would otherwise pass them by. It’s as if seeing, in some small way, is still participating. It makes sense. When your entire world shrinks into a small indoor space for reasons beyond your control, every connection to the outside world takes on exaggerated importance.

But that doesn’t mean the view always has a positive impact. For those trapped inside to avoid deportation, the simple sight of kids kicking a ball down the street, someone walking their dog, a couple holding hands on an evening stroll or a runner disappearing over the hill at the end of the street can feel like a knife in the gut, a reminder of all that has been lost. But such observations are also the fuel for hope, the motivation to keep up the fight, a reminder of the ultimate goal — freedom.

It seems the interpretation of the view depends on the day. I’m told that the percentage of bad days grows the longer a person remains in sanctuary. I can’t imagine it could be any other way. Uncertainty always takes a toll, like a cancer patient living from scan to scan. Life is hard in the shadow of the other shoe.

Imagine day after day, month after month, and for some of these folks, year after year, jumping to the window every time the door-buzzer rings, a car door slams in the distance or an unexpected flash of light bounces off a wall at night. How draining it must be to float between boredom and the stress of being ever on guard against those who would come unannounced at any time of night or day to take you away from all you know, including your loved ones, even your small children.

It must feel like torture, but it’s better than the alternative.

In that context, any view is a constant reminder of the differences between voluntary confinement in a place of refuge and forced captivity in a cell somewhere. But make no mistake, voluntary or forced, surrendering your freedom is a difficult path no matter the number of windows or the square footage of the space that has become the container of your life.

For Sandra Lopez, the views have been limited and the space tight.

Sandra entered sanctuary on October 19, 2017. She avoided detention and deportation by taking refuge in the small basement of the Two Rivers Unitarian Universalist Church parsonage in Carbondale, Colorado, where her 2-year-old daughter, Areli, and her 14-year-old son, Edwin, lived with her for the most part in the crowded space for 10 months and two days. It, no doubt, seemed much longer.

When I visited Sandra in June, she had been in sanctuary for seven months and had no idea when she might be able to leave. She was prepared to hold out for as long as necessary, but it was clear that her situation was growing more challenging with the passage of time.

On the first evening I arrived, I asked her to describe the chain of events that led her to take sanctuary in Carbondale. I had heard bits and pieces of her story before from various sources. But still, I didn’t foresee how traumatic it would be for Sandra to relive what had happened to her for my benefit.

As she recalled the frustrating details through her friend and interpreter Sophia Clark, who joined us, the post-traumatic stress that Sandra was experiencing physically transformed her before my eyes. At one point she was squeezing her hands together so tightly they turned white, and for nearly two hours, her smile was replaced by a series of haunting facial expressions that channeled confusion, frustration, anger and immense grief. Every so often she’d wipe the tears from her eyes without looking up from the fixed point on the floor where her gaze remained for the most part. In the end there was just silence and a wide-eyed, pain-filled stare at the floor that said more than anything I could ever write.

Most of us, because of where we were born and the color of our skin, are immune to the kind of senseless injustice that has been heaped upon Sandra and her family. How can it be in this day and age that where we pulled our first breath is still the largest determining factor in our ability to realize our dreams, no matter how modest?

Born in Chihuahua, Mexico, in 1975, the 42-year-old mother of three — Areli, Edwin, and Alex, 20, all U.S. Citizens — says she has fond memories of her childhood, particularly of her mother. She says life was hard, but she loved her family Boulder Weekly

and always had dreams of a better life someday.

When she was 22, the man who would become her husband persuaded her to go to the U.S. “My husband invited me to come here. He convinced me because he told me over here was good work and good opportunities, and we had so many dreams at that time. We were also trying to escape poverty, violence and a very corrupt government, and we wanted to live somewhere that we could buy a house and have a nice home for our children,” she says.

Her husband had family in Colorado so that was always the destination, but as is the case with so many who follow their dreams north, it would not be an easy journey.

They paid a guide to bring them across the border, but they ended up in the middle of nowhere outside of El Paso, Texas, with a guide in no condition to lead them farther. Even then, at age 22, Sandra’s leadership and determination was on exhibit.

“The man who brought us over was very drunk, and he was not in a safe condition to make the journey, and we were in a group of about 16 people, and I decided that I would rather stay in the desert than risk my life going with this man, and so I said this and told the group, and so as a group, we decided to stay the night in the desert rather than go any further with this man.”

Making such a decision in that circumstance was neither easy nor safe for many reasons.

ious legal status she would fight back, not only for herself but also for others who, like her, had been targeted by an unfair and racist law.

In 2012, Sandra became an immigration activist and leader but she doesn’t think of it so much as a choice. “I have been a leader,” she says. “But this same system that is so wrong and so unjust is what forces us to become leaders. You aren’t born a leader, you become a leader.

“I fell into deportation [proceedings] because of the law SB-90 in Colorado. The ‘show me your papers’ law. So, myself, along with other mothers who have been detained under this unfair law, we got together and we went to the capital in Denver. We told our stories. We told them the truth of what was happening, of what the police were doing with us. And all of us were mothers who were in the system because of something so insignificant, like not coming to a complete stop or crossing a line [on the road] or having a light [on our car] go out or being wrongly accused of something.

“We went to the capital, and we lobbied, and we told our stories, and one of the senators, after hearing my story, used my story on the senate floor. Because of our advocacy, that law was repealed.”

The repeal of SB-90 in March 2013 was a stunning victory for immigrant rights’ groups and the victims of the bill like Sandra, who had worked so hard 14 September 27, 2018

to see it overturned. But Sandra’s celebration would be short-lived.

“Unfortunately,” she says, “I hired a very bad lawyer who represented me very poorly and lost my case.”

Sandra’s low opinion regarding the quality of her original legal representation is more than just sour grapes over the outcome of her case. It was clear that having to even describe what happened to her immigration case between 2010 and 2014 still strikes a raw nerve, and understandably so.

“I got a call from [my attorney’s] secretary saying, ‘We lost your case, and you have to leave the country in two days.’ So I said to them, ‘What? You think I’m going to leave the country in two days and prepare everything and leave my children? What are you talking about and what have you been doing all this time? Why didn’t you tell me sooner?’ And they said, ‘We’re sorry. We forgot about your file, it was on our desk for two months and we forgot about it.’

Sandra says she wanted to change attorneys right then but it wasn’t possible. She knew that she couldn’t find another attorney in two days and that it would take at least a month for new counsel to become familiar enough with her case to go into a hearing and represent her.

“So, I had to stay with them, for the immediate

future, to appeal my case,” she told me. “But of course, as a result of this lawyer’s bad work, I ended up with orders of deportation. When I found out I had this order of deportation, I said, ‘Well, great. I do not want to work with you anymore, I’m getting a different lawyer.’ So, I hired a different lawyer to better represent me, and that lawyer has been able to keep me in the country until now with a stay of removal every year.”

Since 2014, Sandra has gone to an annual ICE check-in, where she is fingerprinted and they do a background check to verify she hasn’t broken any laws before granting her a one year stay of removal. But everything changed when the Trump administration came into power.

On October 18, 2017, Sandra got the bad news, her annual stay had been denied.

“My lawyer called me that day very worried. He told me, ‘I need to speak with you and your husband.’

We went into the office, and I could see in his face that he was very concerned. I said, ‘What happened?

Did they deny my stay?’ And he said, ‘Yes.’ “Of course, I was very sad and crying a lot, and he asked, ‘What are you going to do?’

“I had an [ICE] check-in the next day, so I found out my stay was denied the day before my check-in. I said to the lawyer, ‘Be honest with me, what’s going to happen?’ And he said, ‘As your lawyer, I can’t advise you not to go, but if you go, there’s a high probability that you will be arrested, and maybe we can do something to get you out of detention or maybe you will be deported to your country.’

“I said, ‘No, I’m sorry, but I’m not going to the detention center just because I don’t have a paper. It’s See SANDRA Page 16

not fair that just because I don’t have a legal paper that I should be incarcerated, and I’m going to see whatever other opportunities that I might find, and I’m going to take sanctuary.’

“I said, ‘I’m not going to be separated from my children. And the lawyer said, ‘Are you sure?’ And I said, ‘100 percent, any sacrifice for my children is worth it.’

“The next day I was supposed to present myself at 9 a.m. with ICE, and so that was the time that I was supposed to be, again, put into this unjust system,” she continues. “So, instead of going with them, I came here, into sanctuary.

“I remember the night before was incredibly difficult for me and my husband. I couldn’t sleep. My eyes were wide open, I was in shock, my mind was blank, and I just didn’t want day to break.

“At 6 a.m. I had to get up and wake up my son and get him ready for school, and that was the last day that I got my son ready for school in our home. I didn’t want him to see how upset I was, I was just trying to keep my lips sealed. I had to turn my back so he didn’t see I was crying, and I just gave him a huge hug and told him that I loved him very much.

“But you know, kids aren’t stupid, and he said, ‘What’s wrong, mom?’ I said, ‘Nothing, just give me a hug, and I love you,’ and he told me he loved me.

“After he went to school. I started trying to get ready, and I was putting things into a suitcase, some clothes, and I decided that I would be bringing my daughter with me, and I threw her clothes into the suitcase. I was also working and I didn’t want to just throw away my job. So I went to my work that morning, and said, ‘I’m not going to be able to come into work for a while. I have a huge emergency, and I don’t know how long it’s going to take to resolve.’

“I left behind not only my job but my home, my role as a parent, my role as a wife, but I did that so I will not be separated from my children.”

While taking sanctuary has allowed Sandra to remain in this country with her children, it has still diminished her role as a parent.

She said the hardest thing about sanctuary is, “Not being able to take my son to the doctor; not being able to take my kids to school; not being able to visit them in their activities and not being able to be a part of their schoolwork. I can’t be a part of their lives as an active, 100-percent parent. I feel like I’m a 20-percent parent right now.”

Sanctuary has also taken a financial toll. Sandra says she has spent more than $38,000 so far on legal fees trying to gain status that would allow her to live with her family without the constant fear of deportation. That’s a lot of money for someone cleaning houses, and now she’s lost that income.

After entering sanctuary, her oldest son, Alex, had to drop out of Colorado Mesa University, where the 20-year-old had been attending classes and move back home, because she can no longer financially help support him.

While I was with her in Carbondale, Sandra was preparing for a yard sale, where donated items would be sold to help raise money for her legal expenses. She Boulder Weekly

Table Mesa Laundromat also draws and sells her art online to help with expenses. It is a meager existence made possible by a very supportive community.

Life in sanctuary was hard for Sandra. She received death threats on her phone and Facebook page, and it’s always a challenge to find a private place to reflect or be sad and cry. Even so, she is incredibly appreciative of all those who have sacrificed to make it possible for her to remain with her children.

She said, “It means a lot for me. I know I’m not alone, and my whole community is supporting me. I didn’t have any other options. I needed a place to continue fighting for myself, my kids. I just want the best for my kids, and whatever sacrifices I have to make for them it’s worth it, because I don’t need a piece of legal paper to be a mom for them.”

Sandra was always willing to continue in public sanctuary for as long as it might take, not only for herself and her family, but to fight for all the people who are being persecuted by what she sees as an unfair system designed to exploit immigrants in many ways.

As for what she would like for people to know about her, Sandra Sandra sells her drawings online to help support her family and raise money for her sizable legal fees ($38,000 says it’s simple. “I am a to date). This piece is titled “Freedom to Dream.” public person who is raising their voice against a totally unjust system. I am a mother who is working hard to raise her kids, who only wants to be free and have a regular life with her husband and kids, and who has worked hard her whole life, giving back to people. I am someone who is honest, a hard worker, and just a mother who wants peace and liberty here with her kids. Thanks to my community, I am strong.”

Editor’s Note: In August 2018, a Supreme Court ruling opened a potential new path for Sandra Lopez to pursue legal status. In a prepared statement she said, “My attorneys have talked with ICE, and it confirmed that I am not a priority for removal at this time.

We continue to seek a positive resolution to my case through the court system and are awaiting a decision from the Board of Immigration Appeals.”

As a result of no longer being a priority for deportation, Sandra decided to take ICE at its word. On August 21, she left sanctuary and has returned to her home and family while she continues her legal battle. We wish her well.

he sound of heavy rockfall echoes off of the nearby mountains. Like gophers, heads pop out of tents searching for debris. The smell of smashed rocks sends us a gentle reminder that we are not in charge here — we’re simply visi-

tors.

I retreat back into my sleeping bag, staring at the ceiling of the tent, contemplating what I’m doing on the side of the Grand Teton with complete strangers.

About a month prior to that night, I got a phone call from Big City Mountaineers (BCM) inviting me to climb the Grand Teton as a participant in their Summit for Someone program. BCM, based in Golden, aims to instill leadership and confidence in under-served youth by sending them on wilderness experiences.

I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to climb one of the U.S.’s most iconic peaks on behalf of a child’s opportunity to get outside.

The climb itself would be new territory for me. I’ve always loved being outdoors, and I’ve scrambled plenty of Colorado’s toughest peaks, but I also have a healthy fear of heights.

The Summit for Someone climb up the Grand Teton is guided each year by Jackson Hole Mountain Guides. The day we set out, our team consisted of three men who all participated in raising money for BCM, two guides and me, a journalist and photographer. We’d opted to take the slightly tougher Pownall-Gilkey route up the peak, which contains Boulder Weekly

CLIMBING THE GRAND TETON WITH BIG CITY MOUNTAINEERS

three pitches, or sections of roped climbing. Although I’ve been rock climbing for nearly four years, I had never strung together more than one rope-length at a time, much less on the side of a steep, 13,776-foot mountain.

I ended up becoming a rock climber despite continually panicking when I got high above the ground, convinced I was going to die and swearing that I’d never do it again. But my boyfriend was trying to get back into shape after quitting smoking and having surgery, and I wanted to support his efforts. I just kept on showing up and trying. Over time, I managed to learn how to lead sport routes, ice climb, rappel and clean the climbing gear along the way. But the Grand Teton was in another league.

But what would happen if I couldn’t face the challenge? Would I panic, like I had before? Looking back, my hesitations reminded me of a BCM participant I met after my climb, Isa Urias Martinez. Urias Martinez, 17, was 14 years old when she went on her first BCM trip. She’d been invited on a week-long BCM trip through Denver’s Environmental Learning-Kids program, an agency that focuses on educating and inspiring underserved, urban youth to care about environmental stewardship.

Urias Martinez was drawn to the week-long trip because she felt it would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. She’d never backpacked before and had no idea what would be in store for that week. “I was raised in a household where if something challenges you, you’re

going to have to do it — that challenge will make you stronger,” Urias Martinez tells me.

Going after a challenge is exactly what led me to climb the Grand Teton.

At 2:30 a.m. on summit day, we slowly sip coffee, stretching and preparing for the long day of climbing ahead. There’s a buzz in the air; two members of the team are hoping to finally reach the summit this year, as they were chased off the mountain from bad weather years prior.

My mind races with “what ifs.” Will the route have snow? Can I keep up with the team? Am I going to freak out in front of a bunch of strangers due to extreme exposure? Will my knee injury flair up?

Prior to arriving in Jackson, Wyoming, I was dealing with an IT band injury in my knee, and it was a small miracle I made the nearly seven-mile, 4,000foot of elevation gain slog up to high camp. I looked down at my legs, praying my luck would continue for the remaining 3,000 feet of elevation to the top.

For me, reaching the summit may have been about challenge, but it wasn’t about personal glory. I wanted to document our mission so I could show the next generation that they, too, are capable of pursuing anything. Two years ago, I couldn’t imagine myself being here. But after I showed up time and time again — to the climbing gym, to weekends outside with friends, to my own solo endeavors — I managed to overcome my own fears and realize how strong I really am. dence in young women everywhere.

As we leave our camp, we weave through rocks toward the pitched climbing, I think about the BCM students and their week-long backpacking journey. Even though I’m a well-experienced outdoors woman now, I’m still pushing my way into the unknown. Every time it’s a little daunting. How must the students feel during their first-ever backpacking trip?

Urias Martinez was completely convinced she’d only make it a couple of days into her trek. But on the fifth day, when the team was set to summit, she felt her mentality change. As the sun rose and the team crested the top of a mountain, Urias Martinez told me she felt an intense sense of peace.

“I wanted to cherish that feeling forever,” Urias Martinez recalls. “I couldn’t believe I climbed a mountain. Here I was thinking, I was going to go home, but instead I got to stand on the top of a mountain and enjoy a view that not everyone gets to see.” As a daughter of an immigrant, she felt proud; she says she got to experience something her mother had only dreamed of seeing.

The sun slowly ignites the Grand Teton in front of me. A sea of distant canyons reveal their curves down below, bathed in pinks and oranges. Our guides stop, announcing the technical climbing ahead.

As we tied into the ropes, the wind cuts through our muffled conversation. I belay Collin, one of the guides. He shouts something about ice, but I can’t hear him above the swift wind. Before long, he’s anchored out of sight and it’s my turn to ascend the wall.

The route looked easy from afar, but up close I see it’s shellacked in a thin layer of ice. I have poor circulation in my extremities, so I quickly lose all feeling from my wrists to my fingertips. Climbing transforms from something familiar to something completely foreign.

I struggle up the rock face. Through the numbness, I can’t tell what I’m touching or holding. Just. Keep. Trying! I pause and survey the side of rock as it contrasts sharply against the blue sky. The canyon-ridden channels of the Teton Range look like a mini-world far below me. I don’t think I can do this. I swallow hard and look up at the icy rock awaiting me.

Dangling, I try to remember. I’d come all this way. I had to keep pushing. Just show up to every hold. Just keep trying. I jerk into action and grab a piece of rock a few feet above my face. Although I’m not sure if the hold is any good because I still can’t feel it, I know if I activate my arm muscles and use my legs, I can get closer to Collin.

I scream and claw and slowly make progress, pulling myself onto the belay ledge. Standing at the anchor, fighting off the screaming barfies (a climber term referring to the painful returning of feeling into an extremity after it’s been numb for a long time), I think, again, about the power of the mountain, about feeling simultaneously small and powerful. It’s in these moments when I feel the breadth of human experience — most connected to my true self.

After the crux (most difficult) part of the climb, my team continues up a chunk of more moderate terrain. Three of us are roped together and we have to move together in order to manage slack in the rope and keep each other from falling. The technique is difficult to accomplish with a climbing team you know, much less complete strangers.

We reach the “Bouldering Problem in the Sky,” and I’m momentarily paralyzed.

The series of moves consists of climbing outwards 90-degrees onto a face of rock that has a precarious drop hundreds of feet below. I’m the last in the short-roped team, meaning I can’t stop to think, I have to follow or else I leave my partner hanging over a several-hundred-foot drop. I swallow hard as the slack comes up in the line. I must step onto the precarious face.

Collin belays and relays beta (information on where to place your hands and feet). I express my hesitations to my teammates — saying it out loud helps me feel calmer, and I let go of my fears. Sometimes that’s what I need, just to admit it, acknowledge my fears and remind myself that I’m capable of facing them.

We climb in tandem, breath for icy breath, and pull ourselves atop the Boulder in the Sky and continue toward the thin ridge — the summit now in sight. Picking our way through exposed sections of rock, our eyes are trained on our feet and the slack in the line. Only occasionally do we catch a glimpse of our surroundings, and, five hours after setting out, our Summit for Someone team crests the Grand Teton.

We nosh and enjoy the view, proud of our teamwork on this challenging endeavor. We’d all come together, under a united cause, to help under-resourced youth experience the same sense of joy and pride we were feeling standing 13,776 feet tall.

Of course, neither Urias Martinez nor I ended our mountain careers after a single trip. Urias Martinez went on to lead a BCM trip and is still involved with the program today. She enjoys passing her wilderness skills onto her family and mother, and one day she hopes to have a career as an environmental engineer. As for me, I plan to keep on with my mission to inspire others that they are capable of anything; all you need to do is get out there and show up.

“Built From Fire” by Amanda Sandlin

I

kind of just follow what I’m feeling for the day,” Amanda Sandlin tells me, sipping kombucha across a tall bar table. She’s an artist, so I’m not surprised.

“But, I mean, I work a lot,” she adds, keeping eye contact that’s both soft and striking, like the busy brown curls framing her face. “It’s just constant. I see no real separation between who I am and my business and my art. It’s just all me. Creativity and art is... life.”

It’s been two years since Sandlin landed in Colorado, thinking she’d just outstay the winter before moving on in her ’97 Toyota van, in which she’d been living and making art. But “the mountains,” she says with a glance over her shoulder to the west-facing window, they’re why she never left.

by Emma Murray Flip through Sandlin’s portfolio and the mountains are everywhere, alongside oceans and coastlines and fog-drenched forests. And there’s the woman who’s everywhere, too — at once pensive and peaceful, somber and moody. She’s a series of black or sometimes white lines that altogether create her varied entities, drawn atop Sandlin’s photographs so that nature’s ridgelines and waves and trees permeate her being. Sandlin calls her the “At Wild Woman.”

These drawings-on-photos are Sandlin’s signature style; being comfortable with that, though, wasn’t an easy process for the 28-year-old creative. For a while, Sandlin obsessed over how she was stacking up against the conventional image of “a true artist.”

Often, she’d think: “I’m just drawing and drawing these stupid illustrations, I want to do something more profound.”

But, the further Sandlin tried to escape the At Wild Woman, the more she felt pulled back, to understand where it all began. In 2015, when she’d started to take her art more seriously and quit her job as a designer for Danielle Laporte, working remotely in San Francisco at the time, she moved to New Boulder Weekly

Zealand with a then-boyfriend. From there, Sandlin launched a “Year of Making,” where — surprise — she made a creative thing every day for an entire year.

This Year of Making was an extension of Sandlin’s philosophy at the time: hustle, hustle, hustle and it’ll pay off. As a homeschooled kid following her mom around the world on cruise ships or hanging out at the family farm in Pennsylvania, Sandlin has always been one to learn via the actual doing of things. “You can only learn to an extent from your mind,” she says, lifting her hands from the kombucha glass and cocking them side to side as though she was trying to solve an invisible Rubik’s Cube. “But then there comes a point where you have to put it into action.”

So she started that year of creative hustle making web graphics, then digital collages, shifting to typography and some photography, painting, drawing, even a little sewing — all of which she’d taught herself by watching YouTube videos. New Zealand provided a natural transition for Sandlin’s new life as a selfemployed artist; but the island also changed Sandlin’s relationship with the outdoors. Before moving across the Pacific, her exposure to mountains and nature had been through camping with her dad and climbing

with her old boyfriend, “mostly shaped by men,” she says. “So when I moved to New Zealand ... I started climbing with this woman who was probably 10 years older than me. She was just amazing, very Zen, Buddhist-like.”

The experience with her mentor reframed the way Sandlin related to the outdoors, revealing new perspectives that quickly imbued her art. “She had such a calm and strong presence,” Sandlin recalls. “Like she really knew who she was. And was strong and bold without being the way that we typically see [reflected] in society. Like the feminine strength, the feminine side of strength. I was like, I want to be her so bad.”

A few months into island life, Sandlin rode a rusty bike to the Wellington Library, and as she sipped a flat white, she considered how different, how powerful it was to experience the outdoors with a strong woman. An illustration popped into her mind. A woman. A photo. “I was like, I wonder if I put this woman on top of the photo? And I did.”

The At Wild Woman was born, and a series of drawings-on-photos flooded her workspace. “At first, see CREATIVE UNKNOWN Page 26

art was coming pretty quickly,” she remembers. When Sandlin moved back to the U.S. after splitting up with her boyfriend, she bought a van, built a bed in the back and drove around North America, seeking deeper connections with the land and with other women. “I get a lot of my inspiration from my time in the mountains and climbing with other women and seeing how strong they are; it’s really inspiring in what I do to depict women in my art.”

After a few months on the road, in January 2016, Sandlin wrote a blog post announcing the Year of Making’s close. “I can honestly say this project has changed my life,” she wrote.

“I quit my job, started a business, sold a few pieces of art, and have an entirely different vision for my future. And most importantly, I now view myself as an artist.”

It would take a while for the triumphant energy to subside and reveal the pockets of unsettled foundation underneath. I ask her what it’s like now, trying to create all the time, having her livelihood depend on it.

“It’s just a roller coaster,” she says, throwing back her head. “There are days when I’m like, yeah, kicking ass! I feel so alive, I see the vision! ... And then there are plenty of times when I’m browsing Instagram or Pinterest and I see pictures of artists in their studios surrounded by canvas with paint up their arms and that’s all I want. I definitely romanticize things, ideas...”

When Sandlin settled down in Colorado toward the end of 2016, stationary and alone for the first time in months, the “hustle, hustle, hustle” mentality slowly turned on her. The At Wild Woman didn’t refuel her energy or joy in the same way anymore; as the dust settled, that desire for purpose emerged front and center. Scrambling for an answer to what it meant to be an artist, she found a studio to rent and filled it with her own canvases. But, within two months, she moved out, facing the fact that the space depressed her.

With no energy coming from the At Wild Woman, failing as a studio artist, and still no definitive sense of how to define herself, Sandlin pivoted in the way she knew best: the way she’d done before with the Year of Making, and even detailed in an ebook she wrote in 2016 titled Grit, a guide for stuck artists.

She figured if she just kept producing, kept exercising her creative muscles, the art and bold feminine strength would return. “It was me searching for something that would make me feel more like a true artist,” she says. In spring 2018, she launched herself into a new, high-volume creation project called “100 Days of Independent Study,” in which she tried woodworking, pottery, embroidery and painting again.

Sandlin has gone through many iterations of “artist,” though her “At Wild Woman” series remains central to her creative visions and explorations.

“I am searching for a feeling,” she wrote weeks later on her blog. “The feeling of such commitment to and passion for your craft that it pulls you in, causing you to lose track of time, look up and it’s dark outside, having forgotten to eat lunch or check your phone.

Flow state. ... I want that more than anything. And I feel a little fraudulent to admit that I currently do not feel this way about my work.”

That was before she realized the fraudulent feelings had risen from the void of purpose that engorges a soul when it focuses too heavily on generic, conventional definitions; Sandlin was trying to ignore or dismiss what she found naturally engaging, and instead make herself reflect the conventional artists portrayed on social media.

“When I kept coming back to the At Wild Woman and photography, and realizing the truth is that I don’t fit into one neat little box, that’s when I realized I just need to embrace this.” So she turned back to the At Wild Woman, and instead of merely casting her as a project, Sandlin fully surrendered to all of her essences. “I’m being her,” Sandlin says. “It’s allowing me to open up to other possibilities without it being this really needy feeling. I don’t feel like I need to define myself in some other way. I’m just gonna keep staying true to who I am, and who I am is not just one thing.”

With that realization, the hustling fell away. “My whole tagline before was make, make, make, and now I kind of want to throw up when I hear that,” she says. “There’s still something to be said about showing up, but that’s all you have to do. Just show up, you don’t have to do anything. And showing up just means listening to yourself and allowing yourself to show up however you want to.”

Now, she’s on a mission to find “the true creativity that we’re talking about, like just being creative as a person, as a human, [having the] mindset of more internal work,” she says. “There isn’t one craft that you can do, like there isn’t one thing that makes you an artist. It’s just about approaching life as a creative pursuit.”

At the dawn of her wild-woman self-realization, she wrote on her blog: “Don’t settle. Keep searching for your creative home, the one you’ve built in sincerity, the one that’s real. Screw a perfectly linear creative path. Take a risk.

Choose what’s real over what’s certain.”

She signs it: “Yours from the creative unknown, Amanda.”

one and nuance rule the day on Julian Lage’s last album, Modern Lore. A fancy trio rambles down the dusty roads of between-genre Americana that trades in suggestion over flash, and relaxed improvisation over breathless commotion, growling bits of ill-tempered blues, pinched and urgent bent ninths, fleeting resonances of old-timey ballads and coy, lurking-villain shuffles.

A guitarist’s album, to be sure, but equally a composer’s collection as well, Lage’s instincts as a disciple of melody lifts these pieces into their own space, familiar and welcoming. You could swear you’ve heard the drowsy lead line from “Atlantic Limited” before, the indigo melancholy of “Whatever You Say, Henry” conjures the rainy last scene of a lost-love indie film. And OK, Lage reconnects with his post-bop chops on the jumpy “Look Back,” and maybe the title suggests that, but even here Lage prowls wide and rangey, restless to find new fretboard neighborhoods where he can raise a little hell.

Fretboard technicians and harmony anatomists will hear and savor Lage’s effortless navigation through bluesy inversions and tweaked grace note flourishes — there’s plenty for them to love here — but throughout, you get the sense that Lage was trying not to make a record to impress his fans, but make a connection with the Everyman listener.

Jazz in general, and guitar jazz specifically, is a quarrelsome genre for this virtue, as it can be prone to lapse from lyrical dancing to raw calisthenics.

In addition to his set at the Fox, Lage will be hosting a master class for local players, a rare treat for player-fans of one of the most beguiling guitarists on the scene today.

“Education has been part of my background, as a student and also as a teacher,” Lage says. “And I’ve gradually started to teach less and less, mainly because of traveling, and I think in order for it to be really strong, it needs to be really focused. I got to the point where I wasn’t teaching at the college much, and not taking private students, but on the Boulder Weekly

road we’re kind of this traveling production where it’s very natural and organic to add this part of the day where we kind of do this master class.

“I have some very specific concepts in mind that are… overlooked, in guitar pedagogy. With respect to… ” he reaches for the right words, “how we process information as guitarists, how we find the things that empower us. How to be intellectually active with the instrument as well as emotionally active with it.”

If that all sounds a bit oblique, it’s worth remembering that Lage himself, who endures the label of a former child prodigy, first learned guitar from his father, who only took up the instrument a year before Lage was born, and quickly scaled a very steep arc. Lage played at the Grammys in 2000 at the age of 12; was a faculty member at the Stanford Jazz Workshop at age 15; and was playing with Gary Burton more or less fulltime before he was 17. Now 30, Lage looks over the guitar instruction landscape and sees with different eyes what we flailing amateurs see: an internet parsecs wide and inches deep of online classes, tips and tricks, and home videos of bedroom virtuosos scorching fretboards and usually playing very little actual music.

Some of it is worthwhile, of course, but it’s easy to get overwhelmed.

“The heartbeat of [the master class] is kind of how to process all the great education that’s out there. There’s a lot. But there’s also a kind of paralysis that sets in with students. And I’ve felt it too. My favorite thing as teacher is to not let students become too dependent on a teacher.”

And if his philosophy as a teacher is a little unorthodox, it may also be his

choice of instrument that sets him apart from whatever mainstream guitar jazz is these days. On this record, and his prior trio album, Arclight, Lage wields an ancient Telecaster, one of Leo Fender’s earliest experiments with solid body electric guitars. There have been many, many great players associated with the instrument; we confessed to Lage that our immediate association with the Tele was the late master Roy Buchanan, a titan of technique and peerless summoner of the Tele’s latent squeal and pitiless strafe. Quite a different flavor.

Lage began at a young age on a Stratocaster, but quickly adopted the Tele, and while his earlier recorded career leans heavily on acoustic and semi-hollowbody work, it is the Tele where he feels fully at home.

“I feel fascinated by it,” he says. “It’s an honest instrument, and it definitely has so much potential. For years I played archtop electric-acoustics, which I loved too... but, there was something that wasn’t really native about the design. It always felt like an adaptation of acoustic instruments. [The Telecaster] is always clear and always present. I think it makes me think twice about what I play.”

Around two years ago, in the middle of a club gig, two of the fingers on Lage’s left hand stopped working. Just stopped. He managed to finish his set, but promptly visited a neurologist, had an MRI, and stumped a number of medical personal over the symptoms which, had they been permanent, would at best handicap, and at worst terminate, his career. Scary stuff.

Eventually, it was suggested that he suffered a rare instance of what’s called “focal dystonia,” a condition where a muscle or group of muscles will suddenly lapse into involuntary contractions or paralysis.

“I caught it before it codified as a full-on neurological disorder,” Lage says.

“If you’re able to play, that’s the best cure for it, it’s essential for your recovery. It kind of immunizes you from it. So you’re not letting your brain latch on to any one thing.”

And this fall, with the launch of the Plein Air Festival, the Opera is testing the limits of its own identity, offering the first non-operatic programming in its 87 years.

“Of course, the main organization will continue to focus on the Opera but, in the face of our aging demographics, we are looking for new ways to expand our programing,” Zetah says. “According to our studies, plein air attracts our tarAmanda Tipton get audience, 30- to 40-year-old, firsttime art buyers who don’t just want to buy art, but to experience it.”

Artist Lorenzo Chavez, judge of the Festival, has spent more than 30 years painting western landscapes and describes the craft as an experience, “like a sport,” in which artists step beyond the comfort of studios into nature — snakes, wind and spectators included. To judge the competition, Chavez will look for technical mastery, yes, but also beyond it, awarding the pieces that best achieve the emotional affect of the artist.

“Good plein-air work has a feeling of joy and freedom,” he says. “In a great piece you get to experience the shifting of the light. You get the spirit of the scene, the spirit of the artist, and of the day.”

Fittingly, he points to “Van Gogh of the American West” Birger Sandzen’s 1932 plein-air work of Central City as an example. It was the year of Central City Opera’s inaugural season and, surrounded by the buzz of cultural and economic vitality, Sandzen’s paintings convey similarly ebullient landscapes.

“Plein-air painting might not be the first thing you think of when wondering how to attract new audiences to art, but I think Sandzen’s work is a testament to the enduing relevancy of the form,” Chavez says, “not to mention to the enduring relevance of Central City.”

Jethro McClellan was born in Boston, moved out West before he turned five, and has called Boulder home for most of his life. He wrote his first poem in a Waldorf boarding school in New Hampshire, and never once looked back.

Now, we have Love, Gilda, an intimate portrait of one comedian through her public appearances, private writings and audio recordings.

Though most know Courtesy of Magnolia Pictures Gilda Radner from her many SNL characters — particularly Roseanne Roseannadanna — Love, Gilda attempts to understand the motivations behind Radner by correlating the opinions of those she touched and the material she left behind. It gives the movie a Rashomon-like quality: You have a sense of who Radner was but the why is a little foggier.

The writings come via Radner’s diaries, journals and scrapbook clippings. Most of the text is presented on screen for viewers to see Radner’s handwriting but a few sections are read by comedians who followed in her footsteps: Amy Poehler and Bill Hader (both SNL alums) and Melissa McCarthy. Director Lisa D’Apolito also peppers archival audio from Radner throughout the doc, letting her voice be the connective tissue that tries to tie it all together. The approach is far from a failure, but it isn’t entirely successful either.

Missing most from Love, Gilda is Radner herself, who died at the age of 42 in 1989 from ovarian cancer. Also missing are Radner’s husband, Gene Wilder — who died in 2016 from complications from Alzheimer’s disease — and John Belushi, a close friend of Radner’s and what many in the documentary describe as a big brother/ father figure to Radner; he died in 1982 from a deadly cocktail of heroin and cocaine.

Much could have been gained from their insights and reflections, but it was not to be. Instead, we are left to fill in the blanks with reflections on Radner’s comic origins, her eating disorder, her approach to femininity, her views on comedy and her battle with cancer from old friends: Chevy Chase, looking crazier than usual; Martin Short, an old flame, giving the most thought-provoking insights; and SNL producer, Lorne Michaels.

Cobbled together, Love, Gilda is a decent portrait of an outstandingly funny performer.

“Wow, she had a lot on her plate,” you might say to your friend as you exit the theater.

“And talk about funny!” your friend responds.

Maybe that’s enough. We’ve certainly walked out of movies with less.

What’s faux dinner?

This is the one where the dining critic reviews frozen TV dinners

S

ince 1985 a singular artifact has always hung on my walls no matter where I have worked and lived. It is an aluminum foil plate with four indentations presented as a museum exhibit I received from Swanson foods as the Daily Camera’s food editor.

The item includes this label: “Aluminum Tray Dated from 1954-1985: Shiny-surfaced container of typical 20th Century design. Stamped hallmark ‘Swanson’ identifies this piece which is thought by many scholars to have been a receptacle for a meal colloquially known as a ‘TV dinner.’”

The mass introduction of TV dinners in 1954 changed America’s culture as much as the black-andwhite television with three or four channels, which was then still novel.

In my family we sometimes sat with trays in front of us and watched the Vietnam War unfold in the nightly news on TV. About once a week we ate frozen

TV dinners — turkey most of the time, and fish cakes and tots on Fridays.

The aluminum cooking tray was considered “futuristic” and the introduction of frozen foods was regarded as a feminist moment. As the National Women’s History Museum put it: “TV dinners gave women (who usually did all or most of the cooking) more time of their own to pursue jobs and other interests.” My mother appreciated the respite from creating three meals a day from scratch for five kids and a husband.

I remember really liking the turkey dinners, especially after Swanson added desserts. I found that the apple cobbler stuff complemented the

roasted frozen peas.

It was only in the mid-1980s that microwave ovens finally become omnipresent in American kitchens and microwave-safe trays took over.

In 2018, these dinners are still consumed in front of variously sized screens and supermarkets are still jammed with frozen international cuisine, regional American and restaurant-named entrees plus vegetarian, low-fat and organic meals. see NIBBLES Page 46

So with coupons in hand, I decided to taste-test the current crop of meals starting with one descended directly from those original TV dinners. My HungryMan Roasted Carved White Meat Turkey came with “creamy mashed potatoes, gravy, seasoned stuffing and mixed vegetables (and) a warm apple cranberry dessert.”

The “Serving Suggestion” on the box “Enlarged to Show Quality” bore no resemblance to what emerged from the microwave after about 14 minutes.

The 1-pound net weight dinner contains 16 grams of protein, 410 calories, 50 percent of your sodium requirement along with a fine print blur of ingredients including turkey type flavor, sodium acid pyrophosphate, soybean oil, salt, modified food starch, sugar, L-cysteine monohydrochloride, turkey powder, gelatin, chicken fat, turkey fat and margarine.

Such a deal for about $3.

The package recommends: “Check product temperature. Internal temperature must reach at least 160 F as measured by a food thermometer taken in several spots.” Right. Like that’s going to happen.

I ate the dinner as I consumed political chatter on cable news programs. The turkey was neither roasted nor carved and the pieces were suspiciously uniform.

Stereotypical mixed frozen veggies were accompanied by a thin, blah gravy plus odd, chewy stuffing nuggets, prison-style non-creamy instant mashers and a spoonful of sweet cranberry-apple substance that wasn’t “dessert.” It did give me flashbacks to the house I grew up in.

The TV dinner was like a cartoon in a foreign news magazine parodying what the typical American man would want to eat.

I balanced that taste attack with some tasty dinners including Eating Well Vermont Cheddar Mac & Cheese, shrink-wrapped to show off the contents. I enjoyed the whole grain corkscrew pasta in a creamyenough sauce with a distinct, sharp Cheddar flavor

topped with buttery bread crumbs plus broccoli. It’s a major step up from typical frozen mac and cheese.

Notable is Atkins Chicken and Broccoli Alfredo with 25 grams of protein, larger pieces of good-tasting chicken breast in a substantial sauce and a full cup of even more broccoli. I was also reasonably satisfied by Lean Cuisine Origins Butternut Squash Lasagna with goat cheese and spinach.

The most satisfying meal was Three Cheese Mushroom Risotto from Boulder-based Evol Foods.

For me, it was nicely ironic to consume readymade dinners after a day of work in the kitchen making caramelized onions, rolled involtini and deep-fried wonton mini taco shells. However, after dining on faux food for a few days, I had to let it go. I went back to scratch home-cooking to eat something fulfilling, more nutritious and much less expensive and far less damaging to the environment.

Novelist John Cheever once described frozen dinners as “the monotonous fare of the besieged,” but they are celebrated annually on Sept. 10, National TV Dinner Day. My Proustian advice: Be careful when you go looking to sample the flavor of memories. You may be left with a bad taste in your mouth.

t the farmers’ market this spring, I found myself gushing to a grower friend about dry-farmed tomatoes. Dry-farming is a practice that’s been popular in California and parts of the East Coast for years, and is now spreading to the middle of the country — even to the dry, high plains of Montana. Not just tomatoes, but melons, squash, potatoes and many other crops can be dry-farmed — that is, grown without any supplemental irrigation. In the case of California, not a drop of rain or puff of fog touches the plants all summer, and still they produce. It sounds impossible, and the produce, accordingly, is impossibly delicious, I was telling my farmer friend. He nodded impatiently.

by PetoSeed, purchased by Burpee and rebranded as the Early Girl soon after, then acquired by Seminis seed company, which was acquired by Monsanto, which was acquired by Bayer.

Dry-farmed Early Girls look like the most normal tomato you can imagine. It’s a perfectly red round orb, the size of a tennis ball, an emoji symbol of a tomato. When you take your first bite, the skin is tough and leathery, and requires more force than usual to pierce. You’d better be leaning forward when your teeth finally break through, because what happens next is explosive. There seems to be more water inside than the total volume of the tomato could mathematically hold, and five times the intensity of flavor.

It was a cool spring day when I brought home Steve’s little plant. I had a lot of things to put away, so I stashed the little pot in a sunny spot by the shed, and proceeded to completely forget about it until, months later, I was weed-whacking a tangle of plants by the shed and this 4-inch pot flew out of the bramble. I grabbed the pot, intent to shake out the dirt and toss it, when I noticed a freshly whacked stump protruding from the dry, cracked dirt. Darn, I thought, Steve’s tomato plant. I was about to toss it when I noticed the severed stem revealed an angry shade of green inside. I reconsidered.

Just because a tomato is dry-farmed doesn’t mean it’s not juicy. In fact, it’ll be one of the best you’ve ever had.

I learned what I know about dryfarmed tomatoes while researching a story on the subject for National Geographic (hey there, bucket list). I toured several dry-farm tomato fields in California, and they are a sight to behold. The young seedlings had been transplanted when the soil was still wet from the winter rains; when I showed up, six dry months later, the fields were full of yellow, dead looking plants that hung from their trellises like scarecrows, each plant weighted down by multiple bright red orbs.

I looked at my little green weedwhacked plant stub, and thought about those tough plants. It was late July, but I planted it. It sprouted leaves, almost before my eyes, and grew to about a foot tall before flowering. Today it sports a single, round, green tomato.

At the farmers’ market, I told Steve the story of his abandoned, battered plant. Instead of being impressed by its toughness he scolded me for being such a bad foster parent to a tomato plant. He still wouldn’t admit to it being an Early Girl, but he didn’t deny it either.

And then, on the side of his display, away from the myriad multicolored heirloom tomatoes that his customers adore, I noticed a box of pedestrianlooking round ones. He acknowledged they were of the plant he’d given me, but still wouldn’t say if it was an Early Girl. I bought the box and took it to the lab.

One thing about dry-farmed Early Girls, that tough skin holds moisture and keeps out infection and other agents of spoilage, so they last a long time. After my trip to the dry-farm tomato fields, I went camping on the coast, and those tomatoes lasted for a week before I took the remainder home.

They retained their juiciness and flavor.

When it comes to preparing a dryfarmed tomato for eating, it almost doesn’t matter what you do. The hard and most important part is acquiring some, and the best way to do so is to ask around. It worked for me in the high valleys of Montana, and it could work in Boulder County too.

Due to their extra tomatoey flavor, if you do tomatoey things with them, the results will taste even more so. Slice them, sprinkle with salt, drizzle with

EVOO, place on a piece of soft mozzarella, garnish with a leaf of basil. If you do all of the above, that’s bruschetta, with or without the garlic bread.

I made oven-roasted tomato sauce with vodka, tomato cucumber salad, and the most dazzling clamato you ever sipped. I dehyAri Levaux drated a few trays of slices and quarters, and marinated some of those in vinaigrette.

Here’s an easy little technique that will keep your diners very happy.

Roasted tomato juice bruschetta

As tomatoes broil, they release water. All too often that water evaporates and condenses into a thick, delicious, tangy, orange reduction that quickly burns into a black splotch on the cookie sheet. The beauty of this recipe is that the sauce is absorbed by slices of bread as they toast.

Early Girl or similarly-sized tomatoes, sliced into quarters Slices of a good crusty bread Balls of soft mozzarella, sliced Fresh basil Olive oil Salt Garlic powder Fresh garlic, crushed Butter (optional) Set the tomatoes on a baking tray, with a sliced side down. Sprinkle with salt and garlic powder, drizzle with olive oil, and a few pieces of crushed garlic.

Broil, about six inches below the fire. As the wedges collapse and release their juices, place pieces of bread among them to soak it up. Put a little pad of butter atop each slice, if you wish. When the slices brown, turn them over. Scoop tomatoes from the pan and lay them on top of the slices, and broil until the bread slices are almost toasted. Pull the tomato skins for a smoother outcome if you wish, and lay the mozzarella slices atop the tomatoes. Close the oven door one last time and turn off the heat, allowing the cheese to slowly melt.

When melted, serve the cheesy, tomato-soaked slices, garnished with basil, salt and a drizzle of olive oil.

It’s kind of like pizza, kind of like bruschetta. A tasty way to eat a tasty tomato.

ven before the final awards were handed out, Good Beer Hunting encapsulated the spirit of the 37th Great American Beer Festival with a single tweet: “Good lord — if this year’s GABF awards say anything — it’s that in 2018 you can get world class beer in every big city, little town, and haven in the country.”

And no state made a case for big cities, little towns and havens on GABF’s big stage quite like Ohio. Though they only nabbed 14 medals (five of them gold) at the award ceremonies, each one of the winners paraded down to the stage carrying a large, red-white-and-blue flag sporting a silhouette of the Buckeye State with the words: “Drink beer made here.”

When Boulder Weekly asked a representative from the Ohio Brewers Guild about the coordination behind the pageantry, he simply chuckled and said, “That’s Mary [MacDonald, executive director of the Ohio Craft Brewers Alliance]; she’s a beast in making sure there is support for the great beers of Ohio.”

by Michael J. Casey And with the eye-catching flag unrolled 14 times before the vast audience of brewers, MacDonald’s tactic worked wonders. If anyone watching hadn’t considered Ohio a viable beercation destination, they do now.

No flags were flown as Centennial State brewers accepted their 30 medals, 16 of them gold. Boulder County brought home five of the medals, two of them gold: Sawtooth Ale from Left Hand Brewing Co. for ordinary or special bitter and BJ’s Quad from BJ’s Restaurant and Brewery for Belgian-style dubbel or quadruple.

Colorado fared well in the award ceremony, but our 30 can’t quite hold a candle to California’s whopping 72 medals, 20 of them gold, with the star of the show going to FiftyFifty Brewing in Truckee, California.

Operating a brewpub and a production facility in Truckee — a town of 16,000 just 20 miles north of Lake Tahoe — FiftyFifty nabbed two bronze medals and one gold, which they received for their Bananenhägematte, a German-style weizenbock. Better yet, while FiftyFifty’s beaming brewmaster, Brian McGillivray, waited in line for his gold medal, FiftyFifty Brewing was announced as the winner of the Brewery Group of the Year award.

“This is pretty insane,” a baffled McGillivray told BW. But the beer that owned the 37th GABF was, unsurprisingly, of the juicy, hazy variety.

This year marked the creation of three new competition categories: juicy or hazy pale ale, juicy or hazy India pale ale and juicy or hazy double IPA. Until recently, these beers were known colloquially as “New England-style,” but for their inaugural year, GABF decided to forgo regionalism and identify them by their appearance and taste. And rightly so, considering no New England-based brewery walked away with a juicy or hazy award — though it’s unclear how many might have entered in the competition.

Instead, the three juicy or hazy IPA medals went to two Chicago breweries and one out of La Vista, Nebraska, a town slightly smaller than Truckee. It’s true: good beer can come from anywhere.

he word is out about cannabidiol (CBD) and the incredible healing properties it offers humans, but did you know that your dog could benefit as well? Many pet owners claim that it works amazingly well for pain, arthritis, nausea, separation anxiety and noise anxiety for their furry companions.

CBD is a type of organic compound known as a cannabinoid.

Cannabinoids are compounds that interact with the endocannabinoid system, which is found in humans and other mammals, including cats and dogs. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD does not produce the same euphoric, psychoactive effects people typically associate with cannabis. Millions of patients use strains and concentrates that are high in CBD to help manage a variety of diseases and ailments, like anxiety, cancer and epilepsy along with its accompanying debilitating seizures.

Seizures consist of a temporary involuntary disturbance of normal brain function that is usually accompanied by uncontrollable muscle activity, and it’s one of the most frequently reported neurological conditions in dogs. An estimated 1-5 percent of all dogs suffer from either symptomatic or idiopathic seizures. Symptomatic seizures are typically caused by abnormalities that exist inside or outside of the brain, like head trauma or metabolic health problems. Idiopathic seizures have no underlying cause and may be genetic since some breeds are more prone, like beagles, German Shepherds and border collies.

Dogs that suffer from epileptic seizures are typically prescribed phenobarbital. However, it can be expensive and comes with dangerous side effects for both humans and pets, including lethargy, increased appetite, dizziness, confusion and long-term liver damage.

Now there are dozens of companies and products on the mar-

ket that specialize in CBD therapy for animals, which many pet owners see as a holistic, more affordable alternative.

If you’re interested in CBD therapy for your dog, here are some tips to get started: Find the right veterinarian. Hopefully you already see a vet you know and trust because if you’re considering treating your dog with cannabinoids, you should do it under the guidance of a knowledgeable vet who can make informed recommendations that are both safe and beneficial. Depending on their education, background and personal bias toward cannabis, some vets are still skeptical about the idea of treating an animal with cannabinoids. However, many are getting on board, and some in legal states have even received special training in cannabinoids. So do your research, then talk to a vet who is open to holistic treatment options.

Start slow. Dosages can vary depending on the product, so be sure to read and follow the instructions on the label. Most companies recommend 1 milligram of CBD for every 10 pounds of animal weight, but some pets require more or less depending on their condition. The general rule of thumb is to be conservative and observe your dog over a few days to a week. You can always up the dose if you need to. If you do overdose your dog, don’t panic because it’s not lethal or giving them a high. An overdose typically manifests as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, sleepiness or dizziness. Basically, your dog might “act drunk,” but only for a couple hours until it wears off and the symptoms subside.

Use oil. Obviously our dogs can’t take massive bong rips and laugh along to The Office with us (although that would be awesome).

Like every other medication, you have to trick your dog into taking it. CBD oil is great because it can be mixed in food. The oil allows it to be absorbed into the body through the liver, producing a longerlasting and less intense effect. But seriously, never blow smoke in your dog’s face or try to get them to consume cannabis in smoke form.

Observe your dog. This is especially important after the first time you give your dog CBD. Keep a journal to track when and how much you administer in case you need to adjust over time. If you notice your pet is experiencing negative effects from exposure to cannabis or hemp, call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435.

Tosh isn’t around to do ganja commercials ­— he was murdered in a 1987 robbery — but there’s no shortage of singers celebrating the Kind in American popular music.

According to a study published earlier this month in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, the percentage of popular songs on Billboard’s top-40 list with marijuana references in them reached 30 percent in 2016, the most recent year included in the study, a spike from under 15 percent the previous year.

The study, which was done by researchers at the University of Minnesota and Wayne State University, examined Billboard’s top-40 songs for each year from 1986 to 2016 for references to marijuana, opiods, alcohol and tobacco.

During the 30-year period, references to all the substances except tobacco increased.

In 2016 there were more references to marijuana than to alcohol in top-40 popular songs (30 percent for pot compared to 25 percent for booze). Alcohol still holds the all-time yearly record, however. In 2011, 35 percent of top-40 pop songs referenced booze, compared

with under 20 percent for marijuana that year.

Recreational marijuana was legalized by voters in Colorado and Washington state in the 2012 election.

• • • • There are marijuana legalization initiatives on the ballot in Utah (medical) and North Dakota (recreational) this year, and some law enforcement agencies dislike it so much that they have been using their social media accounts to urge no votes — which happens to be illegal in both states.

Following a warning from the Utah elections director Justin Lee against using public resources for political purposes, the Beaver County Sheriff ’s Office and the police department in Hurricane, a small town in far southwest Utah, took down anti-initiative posts.

In North Dakota, Cavalier County Sheriff Greg Fetsch removed a similar post after a local TV station busted him.

Law enforcement departments and organizations have been meddling in legalization elections for years. It’s nice to see some of them finally being called on it.

• • • • Texas Republican Representative Pete Sessions is not related to U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, but he’s just as execrable as the AG when it comes to marijuana. Pete is the Chairman of the House Rules Committee, and he’s used his position to ensure that nearly all marijuana reform bills introduced in the House of Representatives during the current Congress didn’t come up for a vote.

Now it turns out that Pete may have

something else in common with Jeff as well: He may be about to get his sorry ass fired, not by President Trump, but by the voters in Texas House District 32, which includes a chunk of Dallas and its suburbs.

A new New York Times poll of 500 voters in Pete’s district found that he is leading his Democratic opponent Colin Allred by a single percentage point, 48 to 47 percent. A poll done a week earlier

by Public Policy Polling found Allred ahead by 5 percentage points (47-42 percent).

Allred is a civil rights lawyer and former NFL linebacker. He supports legalizing medical marijuana and decriminalizing simple possession.

The report on the Times poll also revealed one of the problems with all political polling — the number of calls pollsters must make it order to get a large enough sample of the electorate to produce usable data.

In order to get 500 complete interviews, the Times had to make more than 43,000 calls. That works out to 86 calls for every completed interview. (For the 18- to 29-year-old demographic, the Times had to make 135 calls to get a single completed interview.) And even after making 43,000 calls, the paper still didn’t have a sample that accurately reflected some of the district’s demographics.

When this happens, and it happens a lot in polling, the poll’s results are statistically weighted to reflect the district’s demographic make-up as best it can be determined. It works most of the time — but also explains why polling is still something of a black art.
