Boulder City Council should lead on antibiotic reductions

In the U.S. every day on massive, industralized farms livestock are given antibiotics. This very loose practice is not how antibiotics are supposed to be used, and is making it so medicine isn’t working as well for people. It is simply irresponsible and dangerous that there is absolutely no oversight of this practice. We must conserve antibiotics for their intended use and stop

the abuse of this important medicine. I learned of Food & Water Watch’s work with city councils to pass resolutions, which urges the government to pass legislation, which would stop the daily use of antibiotics on farms. I want Boulder City Council to lead the state on this issue, and pass a resolution.

love groups with the gumption to take on big tasks and do what needs to be done — can-do groups that can, and do. But, uh-oh, here comes The Little Choo-Choo That Couldn’t: the U.S. Congress.

Since the earliest days of our U.S. of A., the most basic task of this legislative body has been to keep our national house in good repair — tending to roads, bridges, rail systems, airports, school buildings, parks, Internet access, etc. Yet, with a

toxic mix of anti-government ideology and fiscal foolishness, congressional Republicans have recently been blocking every serious proposal to reinvest in America’s collapsing infrastructure.

The result is an inexcusable drop in maintenance, even as our population has expanded dramatically and the wear and tear on all parts of the infrastructure has created disasters-in-the-making. As one senator says of our increasingly-ramshackle house, “I’ve been here seven and a half years. We have not solved one single problem. It’s just so frustrating.”

That was no tax-and-spend liberal Democrat talking — it was a pennypinching Republican, Bob Corker of Tennessee. Indeed, it was not that long ago that most Republicans understood and funded infrastructure — from Lincoln to Teddy Roosevelt to Ike, and even Reagan, who called such common sense maintenance “an investment in

Gail Collins, the superbly sensible New York Times columnist, recently noted that, “In a perfect world, Congress would figure out a serious, long-term plan to fix bridges, [etc.].”

Yes, but I would amend her observation with this: It shouldn’t take “a perfect world” — even a Congress in a half-way mediocre world ought to be able to do that job.

Actually, thanks to GOP obstinacy, Congress isn’t the Little Choo-Choo That Couldn’t. It’s the Choo-Choo That Could, But Won’t.

(EPA) is in the midst of gathering public comments, through Dec. 1, on it’s Clean Power Plan, which sets first ever limits on carbon pollution from power plants, the single biggest source of air pollution in the United States.

Coloradans will have a significant hand in developing how this plan is implemented in Colorado. The EPA is providing states with flexibility to reach state reduction targets in a manner that protects the health of citizens and the state’s economy.

In spite of misleading and alarmist claims from big polluters and their allies in Congress, we do not have to choose between a healthy economy and a healthy environment. It’s time to act on climate.

The use of coal for home heat was phased out decades ago and “clean coal” for the generation of electricity is still only an illusive pipe dream. Thus, while progress is being made with solar and wind power, we are, and will remain so, heavily dependent on natural gas, particularly for heating our homes. This is a hard reality. On the other hand, although less polluting than coal, natural gas is nonetheless a fossil fuel and its burning adds tons of water and CO2 to the atmosphere every year and is a major factor in the changes we are seeing in climate and weather patterns. Its use is further complicated by the increased demands of a growing world population and the various ramifications of fracking extraction, including methane release,

water consumption, the potential for earthquakes and environmental disturbance and destruction. It is a resource that warrants careful, forward-looking oversight. Having it subject to the commodities market and set for exportation speaks more to short-term exploitation than to resource conservation. If the Governor’s panel ends favoring the industry’s profitability over the public’s environmental and quality of life concerns, it will have been but a short-sighted, and possibly predetermined, exercise in futility.

Last summer, the President took historic steps to address climate change by laying out his National Climate Action Plan which included the first-ever federal standards to limit the dangerous carbon pollution from power plants that is causing climate change and endangering public health.

This year’s State of the Union speech is an opportunity to renew his commitment and once again, bring climate change to the forefront of the legislative agenda.

As whistleblowers come out about the NSA and other issues, and independent researchers analyze the economic and geopolitical events of the 1900s, it becomes clear that we have been lied to and that our constitutional rights and freedoms have been compromised and our democracy undermined. The fracking issue here in Colorado is very important, and I trust that our elected officials will do their jobs with integrity and represent the people who put them in office. This is also just a symptom of a larger problem that has polarized this nation and has prevented us from working together to make changes that would benefit all including Gaia. We do have allies in the East and around the world that are behind the scenes working to free the world from economic slavery, and we can help by educating ourselves and being aware. The technology for a free civilization does exist.

Support funding for health research

Robust funding to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) should be a top priority for Congress. The NIH plays a vital role in researching diseases such as lupus. I ask you to please support at least $32 billion for the NIH in Fiscal Year 2015 appropriations.

Previous cuts to NIH show that our nation is undervaluing the role that NIH carries in saving American lives and combating the disabling conditions that compromise an individual’s ability to have independence in their communities. Lupus is a very complex, autoimmune disease that impacts each organ system and each person differently.

Research in lupus has come a long way, but there is still so much work to be done. People with lupus need and deserve an arsenal of safe and effective treatments, and we are only going to get there if basic, translational, and clinical research in lupus is well-funded.

Cuts in federal funding have had a very serious impact on academic medicine, causing talented investigators to leave the field and impeding research in lupus. Lupus scientists are struggling to stay afloat, and labs are closing all over the country. We are losing committed and passionate researchers for a disease in which there is already a dearth of young investigators.

The future success of our nation as a leader in health care depends on access to the best education, prevention and treatments. Progress in this area can only be achieved if we continue to support state-of-the-art research. To that end, I ask you to support funding at least $32 billion for the NIH. Thank you for your support of the NIH and people with Lupus.

New ideas for jail system

Aside from the jail, alternative sentence capacity, (for programs like Work Release), are back-logged and have lengthy waiting periods. The Boulder jail rents private beds and has dedicated beds at the jail for these programs, all of which are maxed out. These programs keep people working, paying their own bills and on their own health insurance. They are highly cost effective for low-risk offenders, (about half the cost of keeping someone in jail).

However, when there is a two- to three-month waiting period to get in, they become ineffective. The waiting period backs people up into the jail and

“clogs” the system Potential Solutions: 1. Create alternatives to the jail and emergency room for people in mental health crisis. Police officers do not have viable options when they encounter someone who is self-destructive or dangerous to others because of a mental health condition. “Crisis Stabilization Centers” are an evidenceproven alternative in other states, where people in crisis can be taken to a safe, secure setting for 72 hours, stabilized, and then referred to communitybased mental health treatment. We should have those in our state.

2. Restore funding for mental health hospital beds in Colorado that were cut drastically during the recent economic downturn.

3. Build and staff an adequate alternative sentence facility where low-risk offenders can be sentenced, monitored, given counseling and allowed to work.

This would immediately free up over 100 “hard beds” in the existing jail, for people who really needed to be there. These models are working well in counties all around us.

4. Continue strategic planning processes with all of the criminal justice system elements, to streamline the system on the front end and move appropriate cases through the system more rapidly.

5. Review sentencing alternatives with emphasis on programs that have long term benefits for both the offender and society.

6. Maximize restorative justice programs.

7. Make greater use of bail, ankle bracelets and release under the supervision of another person.

Long term, we need to address the root causes of why people end up in the judicial system. Poverty, underfunded education systems, lack of recreational and other activities for youth, etc., contribute to the problem. An increasing percentage of the U.S. population is living below the poverty level, which correlates with crime rates.

Use GMO labels to make educated choices

Rather than describe the perverse and largely corrupt 20-year history that has led the FDA, the USDA, and Big Ag, principally Monsanto Company, to shove GMOs down our throats (consult the above cited websites), I will tell the history of how I applied my instincts and common sense to decisions concerning food and my health; this journey concludes with my thoughts about GMOs. I am now 58 years old and in good health. I hold a bachelor’s degree in environmental science and, in 2012, earned a certificate in nutrition. My purpose here is to encourage others to trust their decision-making abilities and to take charge of their health. My food odyssey began in the 1970s: In the 1970s, people with the authority to do so told me to eat margarine. Butter was bad for me because of fat that would clog my arteries and raise my cholesterol. Recognizing that margarine is a highly processed food, I ignored this advice, and to this day eat butter (organic) sometimes and no margarine, which has since been vilified because it contains trans fats. My arteries are fine.

Also in the 1970s, the media kept warning me about eggs. Eggs are high in cholesterol and therefore bad for me.

I ignored this, purchased free-range eggs exclusively, and to this day enjoy eggs a couple of times a week. All things in moderation. My cholesterol is fine.

Sometime in the 1980s, I was told that fat, particularly from animals, was bad for me and would wreck my health. I ignored this and ate fat freely from a variety of plant and animal sources (while avoiding fried foods and processed meats). No problems.

In the early 1980s, I noticed that as fat was removed from processed and packaged foods (“Low in Fat!”), it was being replaced with sugar. All kinds of sugar, but increasingly over time, it was high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). By the way, HFCS is derived from GMO corn. I decided to avoid all food products that contained HFCS and control my sugar intake. It is now accepted by orthodox medicine and the government that the rise in obesity and diabetes among Americans is due to the consuming of too much sugar and other forms of processed carbohydrates.

Beginning around 1986, I began eating organic fruits, vegetables and dairy products. I reasoned that pestiBoulder Weekly

cide residues on plants and hormones injected into cows and antibiotics mixed into their otherwise unnatural diets were not good for me. I believe this decision paid off by rewarding me with good health through the years.

In 1994, a GMO tomato, called the Flavr Savr, was introduced by Calgene (acquired by Monsanto) and licensed by the federal government for countrywide distribution. There were problems with the Flavr Savr, one of which was that consumers didn’t like its flavor!

Also, we didn’t trust it. I never tried one. The idea revolted me.

Since the demise of the Flavr Savr tomato, our farmland has been planted with 170 million acres of GMO crops, the majority being corn and soy. Most GMO corn and soy are fed to livestock. I ignore the advice of the FDA and the USDA concerning GMOs — I will not eat GMO foods of any kind, including the flesh of animals that has been affected by genetically engineered foods. I believe that people and animals (also insects as well as non-GMO plants via cross-fertilization with GMO seeds and soil degradation) are experiencing breakdowns in metabolic functioning and generally being altered in myriad detrimental ways due to GMO foods, their derivatives and the agricultural practices that produce them. What has been done to determine the long-term impacts of GMO foods on human health?

Fundamentally, nothing: there have been no human clinical studies chronicling the effects of GMO foods on health. We do know, however, that since the introduction of GMO foods, there have been significant increases (by orders of magnitude in many cases) in food allergies, especially in children, autism (also children), and inflammatory bowel disease. We are statistics of the industry’s and government’s risk assessment strategies. I’m very glad that I trusted my instincts over 30 years of what I call dietary insanity. I will continue to trust it and seek the facts from those I believe are trustworthy.

What does your intuition and common sense tell you about GMO foods?

Label them or you will never have validation — nor will your doctor. Needless to say, as their use becomes ever more pervasive, you will increasingly find it difficult to avoid them, if that is your goal. No one asked you whether or not you wanted to be used in an immense, uncontrolled experiment. What is an acceptable level of risk for you and for your children, born and yet unborn?

news Big oil in small schools

How the oil and gas industry has gotten into Boulder County schools and student groups

n the last year, various members of the oil and gas industry have visited the students of a Boulder high school environmental group.

School officials invited those industry folks most of the time, but some questions have since arisen.

Who invited the oil and gas representatives? Why are they allowed to speak to students without parents around? Is there any context in which industry members can provide an educational benefit to students?

Consider New Vista High School in Boulder as a trial case. In the last year, they’ve had representatives from the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC), oil and gas engineering students, fracking geologists and more speak with members of the student group Earth Task Force.

The group is supervised by Madeline Bachner, who is not a teacher at the school, but a contracted employee from the Cottonwood Institute — a nonprofit that helps students in underserved schools develop environmental groups and initiatives. Bachner is not the only contracted employee in the district, which serves many smaller schools like the 350-student New Vista.

On Sept. 10, a research student from Colorado State University came in to speak to the Earth Task Force. Asma Hanif came to share with students a new program she helped develop with Ken Carlson called Colorado Water Watch, which “intends to watch for any contamination, especially due to oil and gas operations in the Denver Julesburg basin.”

Hanif ’s LinkedIn biography says her current role as research assistant at the school includes tasks like “designing static and real-time optimization tools for oil and gas industry clients,” and developing technology that provides “real-time data [that] would help the industry in risk management.”

Colorado State, for those who missed it, also recently announced the creation of the Center for the New Energy Economy, a research facility headed by former Colorado Governor Bill Ritter and many former industry people.

Hanif ’s scheduled appearance caused a stir amongst some parents who thought she was a representative of the COGCC. That wasn’t quite true. But she was recommended by the director of the COGCC, Matt Lepore.

The Earth Task Force at New Vista High School in Boulder has spoken with industry executives, COGCC representatives, fracking researchers and more inside school walls.

“[Hanif and researchers] were putting up a website and they were looking for people to review the website — to sort of beta test the website. I suggested they could have the students at New Vista do that as a way to engage those students,” says Lepore.

Lepore says New Vista reached out to him to speak to the group but, in this case, he recommended that the school gets in touch with Hanif.

The COGCC was also present during a panel discussion at New Vista in March, when two people from the agency were invited to participate in the discussion. Those two people were community liaisons, Lepore says, and his department will often comply with requests from schools and other community institutions to speak.

“The outreach effort is active,” Lepore says. “Most of it occurs in response to requests for us to speak on various topics. We just want people to be informed on what COGCC’s role and mission are and what we are responsible for.”

That panel also included an oil and gas geology consultant, an engineer and an oil and gas specialist from Boulder County. The Cottonwood Institute later wrote on its website about the event: “[Students] especially appreciated being given the opportunity to form their own opinions about such a controversial and important environmental issue.”

The school district has recently revised regulations on deciding who is allowed into schools to speak directly to students. Policies were revised after an abstinence-only speaker “inadvertently” sent students to a website related to her church for more information, according to Briggs Gamblin, director of communications and legislative policy with the Boulder Valley School District.

“That created a stir, so we had to back up and re-look at the procedures and meet with the people again and explain that we couldn’t do that,” says Gamblin. “We found some things that had not been updated in a couple years.”

Gamblin says the program Hanif and Colorado State is running was meant to “be a monitor on oil and gas operations” and so the student-led Earth Task Force would likely be amenable to her message and insight.

Gamblin said the guidelines for accepting speakers are different for each curricular area and based on the capabilities of clubs and supervisors.

“The bottom line is if someone wants to speak to a class and the teacher takes that request to the principal and if the principal is all right with that, then the person [is] pre-approved,” says Gamblin. “It’s not really a policy, it’s more a procedure.”

Gamblin added that the Earth Task Force at New Vista is “unique” in the county and so they are more likely to encounter oil and gas representatives from private and governmental sectors than other schools and clubs in the district.

Outside of inviting industry members to speak and to participate on panels, some oil and gas companies have found proactive ways to access schools in Colorado.

For instance, Encana, a major oil and gas producer in the state, has worked with high schools across Colorado, says Wendy Wiedenbeck, Encana senior community relations advisor.

“We have a lot of great relationships with high schools across the state,” says Wiedenbeck. “We engage with them on different levels. We wouldn’t come in with a program at a local school and talk about the work we do unless we

were invited in. And make no mistake we have been — we’ve been asked to participate in some school initiatives where maybe they wanted to get both sides of the issue.”

Wiedenbeck says the majority of Encana’s interaction with high school students comes via financial awards to students.

“If we interact with a high school it’s because a student has received a scholarship,” Wiedenbeck says. “We work through the student counselors for schools that are within a district where we have active operations. Those counselors and students would work together to complete the application.”

When a student is awarded a scholarship, Encana representatives will visit the student at his or her high school during a public event.

“We will go to their high school awards ceremony and present them with the scholarship along with all the other scholarships that they get. For instance when we have a recipient from let’s say Erie or Mead high school, someone on the team will find out when is their award ceremony and we go there,” says Wiedenbeck.

Encana is not the only local oil and gas company that engages Colorado high school students via scholarships.

Anadarko provides scholarships to students who pursue geophysics majors and Noble Energy provides scholarships to children of employees.

Oil and gas education is also in many students’ textbooks. Hydraulic fracturing-specific education is part of the curriculum for many Colorado high schools as part of the National Energy Education Development Project (NEED). The program was started more than 35 years ago but now includes hands-on education in schools about solar and wind power as well as “oil and gas exploration in shale.”

Wiedenbeck says Encana will supplement a school’s NEED curriculum by holding workshops for teachers or attending educational functions put on by the school district.

There’s also a direct financial connection between Colorado schools and the oil and gas industry. Last year, Weld County School District 6 leased its land to Synergy Resources for about $140,000, enabling it to frack for gas underneath the district’s schools.

Generating nearly six times that amount annually, the Parks department eschewed the bid process in favor of a three-year, single-provider “pilot” arrangement with the former employees’ dance company, Kinesis.

Bowden says the reason there was no bid process is because maintaining continuity of service for Boulder dance patrons could not have been done if the program had been bid on.

“To ensure a smooth transition for our visitors already utilizing the city’s dance offerings, the department sought a pilot arrangement utilizing one vendor for delivery of all dance classes,” writes Bowden. “Kinesis, a local women-owned business, is run by dance professionals who were already familiar with our portfolio of dance offerings and class participants.”

Bowden added that, “Entering a three-year pilot with Kinesis allowed us to maintain the existing dance curriculum.”

Bowden says the city didn’t actively seek other potential dance program partners throughout the months-long process. It’s also noteworthy that the owners of Kinesis, who quit in May, took over the management of 69 different dance classes in less than a month.

That is, there is little doubt about how

long this idea had been in the works.

The owners of Kinesis, Kirsten Leslie and Cynthia Burdine, will be compensated by the city out of a portion of registration and drop-in fees (out of the $300,000 annually). Plus, Kineses will get to determine any new fees or costs to patrons after the switchover. Kinesis will also operate their own programs and classes outside of city-run facilities.

Make no mistake, Leslie and Burdine are more than qualified to run the new affiliate dance program. The problem is that they may have been too close to the program to ensure a fair process. Leslie, for instance, had worked at the city’s dance program since 1999.

“They were well acquainted with the varied forms of city-delivered dance instruction and with class participants who had previously registered for dance classes,” writes Bowden.

After the three-year “pilot program” for Kinesis and the city, Bowden says, there will be an open bid process. But one has to wonder, that if the city couldn’t even ask other local dance companies about their interest in running the dance program the first time around, how are they going to turn their backs on their former long-tenured employees after three years of entrenching themselves and their company in the dance program and hold a fair, open bidding process?

apers across the Front Range could be up for grabs as Digital First Media “evaluates” options.

On Sept. 12, Digital First Media, operator of The Denver Post, announced plans to “evaluate and consider strategic alternatives for the company’s business,” which could include selling the entire company, selling regional clusters of papers or doing nothing at all.

Digital First owns 76 newspapers across 18 states including The Denver Post, Daily Camera, Longmont Times-Call, Colorado Daily, Broomfield Enterprise and Colorado Hometown Weekly, as well as several other

papers in Colorado. The media conglomerate also owns 160 weeklies. Altogether, Digital First employees 10,000 nationwide.

Digital First Media formed in December 2013 from a merger between Denver-based MediaNews Group and the former Journal Register Company, and is owned by hedge fund Alden Global Capital.

Media analysts are saying that selling the company in regional clusters would be the best strategy. If that’s the case, Philip Anschutz is a likely fit for the Rocky Mountain region. Anschutz already holds The Oklahoman in Oklahoma City and The Gazette in Colorado Springs. Other potential buyers — on the opposite end of the political spectrum — with the financial clout to purchase an empire of newspapers are Congressman Jared Polis, D-Boulder, and Tim Gill, creator

of the software-publishing program Quark.

Digital First said in a statement that there is no guarantee that a transaction of any sort will take place, and no developments on the situation will be disclosed until the board of directors assesses a “full range of opportunities.”

Digital First CEO John Paton says that there is no timeframe set in which a decision will be made about the future of the company, but media analyst Ken Doctor has said he believes the public will see the dissolution of the company within six months.

egend has it that the founding of Amazon is a classic story of a guy pulling himself up by his own bootstraps. In 1994, a bright, young fellow named Bezos heads off to the Seattle suburb of Bellevue, with not much going for him but old-fashioned pluck and a unique idea: Selling books on this new thing called the Internet. Some called him crazy, but the bold entrepreneur got his online “bookstore” started in his garage in 1995. And lo, 19 years later, it has sales of nearly $100 billion a year and has made Bezos the 13th-richest American.

Reality. Amazon did open for business in a Seattle garage, but guess where it was conceived? Wall Street! For the eight years between graduating from Princeton and landing in Bellevue, Bezos was a very well paid Wall Street investment banker. In 1994, while working at D.E. Shaw, a powerhouse hedge fund, he came across a report showing that Internet marketing was about to boom, expected to grow by 2,300 percent a year. That’s when — click! — the Amazon light bulb lit up in Jeff’s head.

By the way, Amazon’s now-iconic brand name was not Bezos’ first choice. It was initially incorporated as “Cadabra,” as in abracadabra. But that sounded too much like “cadaver.” Then came a suggestion he really, really, connected with: “Relentless.” How perfect that would’ve been! But wiser heads prevailed. So Bezos finally settled on Amazon, noting with typical modesty that the mighty Amazon River is the largest, most powerful river in the world — literally a force of nature.

Christmas, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday (invented by Amazon), Election Day, July Fourth, or (for God’s sake) Labor Day — don’t even think of taking off.

Also, technically, you don’t work for Amazon. You’re hired by temp agencies with Orwellian names like Amalgamated Giant Shipping that do the dirty work for the retailer. This gives Amazon plausible deniability about your treatment — and it means you have no labor rights, for you are an “independent contractor.” No health care, no vacation time, no scheduled raises, no promotion track, no route to a full-time or permanent job, no regular schedule, no job protection, and — of course — no union. Bezos would rather get Ebola than be infected with a union in his realm, and he has gone all out with intimidation tactics, plus hiring a notorious union-busting firm to crush any whisper of worker organization.

In fact, when you toil for the man, don’t even expect air conditioning.

Three summers ago, a series of heat waves hit Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley, and Amazon’s cement warehouse there literally became a sweatshop. Yet, workers not only were expected to endure heat that reportedly rose as high as 114 degrees, but also were prodded to maintain the usual relentless pace dictated by the corporate timers. Many couldn’t make it… so Amazon had to adapt.

Slow the pace? Don’t be ridiculous!

Instead, as reported by The Morning Call in Allentown: “Amazon arranged to have paramedics parked in ambulances outside, ready to treat any workers who dehydrated or suffered other forms of heat stress. Those who couldn’t quickly cool off and return to work were sent home or taken out in stretchers and wheelchairs and transported to area hospitals.”

After a wave of customer outrage rolled into headquarters — and after federal workplace safety inspectors arrived at the warehouse — Bezos had Boulder Weekly

Learn about the men who made Colorado skiing great

T

he 10th Mountain Division was an integral player in the rapid development of the Colorado ski industry during the second half of the 20th century. Some would argue it was the most important part. The veterans of the famous division were involved in the founding of Vail (Pete Seibert), Breckenridge (Bill Rounds) and Aspen (Friedl Pfeifer), as well as other related projects like Skiing Magazine (Dick Wilson), and the National Outdoor Leadership School (Paul Petzoldt). The fact that there is a whole system of backcountry huts dedicated to the 10th and statues memorializing them in many resorts is a testament to their indomitable spirit. What most Coloradans don’t know is the more intimate story of the soldiers’ lives — luckily, that is now changing.

The 10th is the first in a series of three plays written by Christopher Willard, executive director of the Breckenridge Backstage Theater, detailing Army life high in the Rockies and the continuing legacy of these famous soldiers throughout the years.

“When I first moved to Breckenridge, I saw the statue dedicated to the soldiers of the 10th Mountain at the River Walk Center and it captivated me,” says Willard. “That launched me upon a nine-year journey to learn their stories and share them with the public.”

The play follows the lives of two main characters

The play is a piece of historical fiction based upon Willard’s numerous interviews with surviving members of the elite force.

“What was fascinating is the level of commitment these men showed to become a part of the 10th.

Unlike other divisions, they had to apply, receive three letters of recommendation and pass a series of tests,” Willard said. “This was not your average group of soldiers. They were highly intelligent, superb athletes and incredibly dedicated.”

The training the soldiers were put through is legendary. It was a precursor to modern day elite forces training and cumulated in the infamous D-Series

where the soldiers spent six weeks living in the open, simulating combat experiences in subzero temperatures. Much of the play focuses on this training and the bonding experiences it created amongst the men.

“One of my favorite parts of the play is the beginning of the second act where I use a line gleaned from my interview with Hugh Evans when he referred to the D-Series as ‘That’s when I knew the Army was trying to kill us,’” says Willard. “I think it summarizes the stress these men were feeling and their drive to succeed.”

George Thorogood is definitely not slowing down with age

T

he Beatles did what they do, Dylan did what he does, and the rest of us had to play the blues,” George Thorogood says of the barreling Chicago-style electric blues he has specialized in for 40 years now.

But back when he first started playing in the early ’70s, Thorogood wasn’t really sure rock would even be around this long, let alone any contributions he might make to the genre.

“It wasn’t just me,” he says. “At that time everyone thought rock might die.

The Beatles broke up, Jimi Hendrix just died, Janis Joplin just died.”

And who was left? James Taylor and Joni Mitchell, whom Thorogood respects, but says are definitely not rock. Even the mighty Led Zeppelin was going soft back then. “‘Stairway to Heaven’ was a gentle song,” he says.

The music world was shifting toward soft rock, and Thorogood just wanted to be a part of heavy or hard music before it went away. So Thorogood, who at the time was a semi-professional baseball player in the now-defunct Roberto Clemente league, picked up the guitar, cranked his amp and went to town.

But when he did, it wasn’t just his being neither Lennon nor Dylan that pushed Thorogood toward the blues.

“Life is tough,” says Thorogood. “How many times does your team win the world series? Overall, blues is something everyone can relate to in some way.”

Justin Townes Earle on marriage, sobriety and not whining about the past

Now that Earle has left his hardcharging life behind him for a more stable one, he has a clarity which is not only positively impacting his personal life, but his creative one as well.

“It took me a long time to not believe the lie, but I don’t believe it takes drugs or alcohol to write anymore,” Earle confesses. “I think it was part of an evolution of me as an artist. It’s been a long climb. I spent a lot of years living out on the road, and now that I’m here, I feel like I’m ready. It was 10 years [from signing his first deal to actually releasing an album] before I got anything going. If you don’t learn a lot in that situation, then your eyes aren’t open.”

Earle has learned a lot about heartache, love, addiction and perseverance, as well as second and 12th chances. God knows it would have been easy for him to make Single Mothers a self-righteous missive on what it means to be good and to act like he had all the answers, but he steers clear of that. Instead, Earle opts to paint a picture of life in all its beautiful messiness, and let the listener decide what to glean from those experiences.

“I made the choices I did to step into that world,” he says regarding his troubled past. “And I think it made me a better man, but I like to leave a lot to interpretation in my songs.”

Now Earle has stepped into a different world, and it looks like this roller coaster is only going to go up for him.

‘Odysseo’ takes viewers on a journey of mythic proportions

La Roux, the nom de stage for London songwriter Elly Jackson, almost seems like she commutes to work in a DeLorian. Her dancy 808 disco-pop beats, her synth lines, even her hair are straight out of the Human League/Euthymics/Flock of Seagulls slice of the 1980s.

But what sets her apart from other artists mining that time for their sound is that Jackson began her songwriting as so many do: a solo act armed with just an acoustic guitar. But finding standing still with a guitar boring, Jackson teamed up with fellow songwriter Ben Langmaid and transformed her folky ballads into dance hits.

An elderly widower gets a second chance at love in Creede Repertory Theatre’s production of The Last Romance by Joe Dipietro. The charming story of an older man falling in love and finding happiness again is a romantic-comedy about love in the “golden years.” The theatrical entertainment will be accompanied by a discussion — a pre-performance talk encouraging the audience to dive deeper into the play by understanding essential themes and interesting aspects of the production.

Upstate New York-based duo Phantogram has won no shortage of accolades for its electronic sound, heavy on elements of of trip-hop and psychadelia, all swirling guitars and synth bass over boom bap beats, finished off with the clear melodies from vocalist Sarah Barthel.

The band put out its second album, Voices, in February of this year. It was a big step forward for Phantogram sonically, including collaborations with Big Boi from Outkast and members of The Flaming Lips, and helped the band leap from being a supporting act to being a headliner.

Debut of CineLatino puts a different lens on cinema

KUNC 102.7 FM Amat Escalante’s Heli, the story of a 12-year-old girl caught in the drug war, will show as part of CineLatino.

“I look at Sundance, SXSW, the big festivals,” Quiroz says. “I’ll also look at distributors from Mexico, from Argentina, from the bigger countries, kind of see what they have, what’s hitting the circuit and then it’s just watching a lot of movies.”

But in the end, programming just, “Comes down to, what do I like? What do I think the audience will like?”

Cinema isn’t just about giving the audience what they want, but giving them something that they didn’t know they needed. That is what Quiroz is hoping for with CineLatino, and his slate is diverse enough that it just might work.

Blurring the lines between narrative and documentary, some of the movies of CineLatino have roots in the real world. This is especially true of Heli, which won the award for Best Director (Amat Escalante) at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Dealing primarily with Mexican drug cartels and a brother and sister who inadvertently get involved, Heli is a tough watch, but a beautiful and powerful movie that addresses life and all of its ugliness head on. Please note this one is not for the faint of heart.

The Desert, an Argentine film from director Christoph Behl, is a riff on JeanPaul Sartre’s No Exit and the apocalypse.

One of the documentary entries, Food Chains, takes a look at the rough and downright awful world of the immigrant farm worker. One movie Quiroz singled out specifically is the documentary Who is Dayani Cristal? from producer and star Gael García Bernal.

“They find this body in the middle of the desert and [Bernal] tries to recreate, what did this person go through?

— the actual, physical ordeal of coming across the border and wandering around in the desert,” Quiroz says.

“What would drive someone to do that? And try to understand from this person’s perspective of what was going on. Why did he do that? To hopefully give this anonymous person, to give them a voice.”

All of these movies give Hispanics and Latinos a voice, and it is a powerful one.

The festival kicks off Thursday night, Sept. 25 with Water and Power with special guests writer/director Richard Montoya, actor Nick Gonzalez and iconic Mexican-American actor and director Edward James Olmos, whose company produced the movie. As Quiroz puts it, “He’s not officially listed as a producer, but he’s a big champion of the film.”

If that is not enough Olmos for you, then you can watch one of his seminal performances on Saturday, Sept. 27 with Zoot Suit, a 1981 narrative about the Zoot Suit Riots in L.A. Zoot Suit is not available on DVD or Blu-ray, so here is your chance to catch this contemporary classic, on the big screen, on 35mm at no cost. That’s right, Quiroz really wants you to come out and see Zoot Suit, so he’s opening the doors for free.

The timing for CineLatino couldn’t be better. Sept. 16 was the annual celebration of Mexican Independence Day and September is Hispanic Heritage Month.

I

n many ways, Boulder’s restaurant culture, with its focus on local, organic and high-quality ingredients and preparation, serves as a model for what the rest of the country could be doing to help Americans eat better. But a significant barrier to that end is that many Americans find the forwardness of that culture pushy or obnoxious, even if they embrace those values.

As Weird Al Yankovic (a committed vegan for several decades sang) in his song, “I’ll Be Mellow When I’m Dead,” “don’t want no part of that vegetarian scene … you won’t catch me sipping Perrier down at some sushi bar.”

With that in mind, the place to then look for how best to export Boulder’s food values may not be the farmers’ market but Turley’s Kitchen, which has been serving Boulder since the late ’70s. While the architectural holdovers from its days as a franchise make it look and quack a bit like a chain steakhouse, it cooks like something else altogether. That makes it familiar enough to lure in the normies, and then pull the old bait and switch, giving them a burger made from grass-fed beef with the option of seasonal veggies on the side. Boom. Now you’re eating better, suckers.

Turley’s Kitchen tweaks American food instead of fixing it

by Josh Gross sandwiches, salads and soups, with the prerequisite Colorado selection of Southwest- and Mexican-influenced dishes. It’s mostly familiar items like burgers, chicken salad sandwiches, Ceasar salad and wild salmon. Perhaps the most adventurous item on the menu, strictly from a composition perspective, is the buffalo meatloaf ($17.50), which is served with mashed potatoes, seasonal veggies and a tomato chutney.

I ordered a chili relleno ($5.25)

from the appetizers menu to start. The poblano chili came wrapped and fried in a wonton wrapper on a bed of green chili. It wasn’t much more than a nibble (appetizer and all), but it had a nice crunch and structure to it. The green chili was definitely more on the rich side than the spicy side, with the chili almost being an ornamental term, but it was a nice flavor regardless.

A cup of Hungarian mushroom soup I ordered had a smooth, creamy flavor and thick structure free of the

particulates that can haunt the dish. A red quinoa salad ($10.50), made with organic kale, black beans, roasted peppers, cilantro, jicama and roasted pineapple, had an excellent balance of sweet and earthy flavors. A blueberry cobbler for dessert came with a nice scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.

The breakfast menu at Turley’s Kitchen — which placed in two categories of this year’s Best of Boulder voting — hems the same line, with omelettes, benedicts and pancake/waffle options.

An excellent food writer I used to work with constantly railed against diners and chain restaurants, saying that she couldn’t understand “why people insist on still eating like it’s the 1970s.”

Turley’s Kitchen isn’t keeping the spirit of ’77 alive in the Village Inn sense, all straight hashbrowns and club sandwiches. Instead, it’s using that as a starting place to find a path to healthier eating with food familiar enough for those that aren’t ready to admit that the ’80s and its sushi revolution are here to stay, but healthy enough to make a difference. Either here in Boulder, or out there in Sarah Palin’s “real America,” Turley’s Kitchen would be a hit.

Can one catchall word capture the meaning of the local food movement for grocers and consumers?

as a way to build trust with consumers and avoid the “greenwashing” of products that are not actually grown according to environmentally sustainable practices. One thing it certainly accomplished, however, was establishing a nationally recognized definition of the word “organic.”

Is the same possible for “local” food?

Possibly. But it’s yet to happen.

In 2011, President Obama signed into law the Food Safety Modernization Act, which gave new regulatory authority to the FDA and was considered the most sweeping reform of food safety laws in the last 70 years. While the law does make a distinction between domestic and imported foods, it does not directly address

what qualifies as locally grown.

While not actually defining the word, the USDA has been researching the rise of the local food movement and conducted a report in 2010 of their findings. Pulling together existing analyses from universities, government agencies and nonprofit organizations, the study looked at data for local food markets across the country from 1978-

2007. The report has been used by many retailers considering their own local food policy despite its lack of an empirical definition.

According to the study, most local food production occurs on small farms located in or near metropolitan counties and that direct-to-consumer sales — such as at a farmers’ market or CSAs — made up the largest percentage of local food sales, totaling over $1.2 billion. Findings from this study illustrated the rapid growth in the local food movement, with sales of local food growing twice as fast as total agricultural sales for the same time period. It also points out, however, that local food production still makes up only a small share of the total national food supply, with only 5.5 percent of farms engaged in selling within a local market.

This is changing. Data from the recently released 2012 Agriculture Census says that while the overall sales numbers from locally produced food sold directly to the consumer have not changed significantly, the number of farmers using this method has increased to 7 percent of the total market. While this amounts to about 8,000 more farms showing up at the local market or developing CSA’s within their communities, it does not take into account how many grocery chains are now buying their product at wholesale to sell in stores within their area. To many, this shift away from direct-to-consumer sales to a wholesale model adds a “middleman” between the grower and the consumer of food and violates their personal belief in what constitutes “local” food, but this trend is expected to grow as grocers see the demand for produce and products within the same geographical area.

So, do we really need a universal definition of what “local” food means?

This question has almost as nebulous an answer as the definition itself.

Extra regulatory processes are unlikely to be a popular move. On the other hand, so fluid a definition has many customers wary of products touted as local.

But wary or not, “local” is something that catches a customer’s eye. A 2014 survey by the National Grocery Association found more than 87 percent of customers said availability of locally grown products impacted their shopping choices.

But what information they are provided to base this decision on is still up to the individual retailer, meaning that for now, it’s up to the consumer to ask exactly what local means.

Dear Dan: I’m a 28-year-old pancurious married guy from the Midwest about to move to San Francisco. I’ve been with my wife for 10 years (married four), and we’ve started to explore being monogamish. I am also reexploring my bi attractions. I’ve been thinking a lot about the opportunities for reinvention that our cross-country move might provide. My wife is GGG and fully supportive, but I still feel apprehensive about getting back out there. I’d like to believe that I am not a complete fool at being charming when it comes to dating, but after 10 years of monogamy, I am worried that my sex knowledge is the sex that works for my wife and me.

And there’s the fact that I am very new to guys, with just one short-term M/M relationship and one terrible hookup under my belt. Any tips for bolstering one’s confidence and making new sexual encounters as fun and unawkward as possible? Is there a resource for dating, hookups, culture? I know the basics of safe-sex practices, but I know little of clubs, kink parties, Growlr/Tinder, etc. I want to slut it up in SF, but I don’t know where to start.

Accepting that new sexual encounters can be awkward is the first step in making them less so.”

Superstar took the words right out of my mouth: Acknowledging and embracing the awkwardness is the only way to get past it. You know how a drunk never seems drunker than when he’s trying to pretend he’s not drunk? Pretending you aren’t feeling awkward when you are makes you seem more awkward. So practice saying, “I’m new at this, I’m a little nervous, and I’m feeling a little awkward.” Good people — people you might want to mess around with — will make effort to put you at ease. Shitty people — people you wouldn’t want to mess around with — will do you the favor of wandering off.

But whether you want to explore with men or women, NNBS, Superstar — who has something of a bias — recommends sex parties. “They’re a great place to explore because there’s no commitment,” said Superstar. “You can meet someone, make out, fool around for a bit, and if you’re not feeling it, you can go do something else. Obviously I would recommend my event, Kinky Salon, for a newbie bi guy. We are queer-friendly and a great place to meet people. He could even bring his wife along. It’s a lot safer and more community-driven than the anonymity of a bathhouse, and there are more opportunities to flirt, make out, and socialize, which are nice baby steps to take.”

A cannabis ad campaign designed to educate, not frighten

advertising to help counter the stoner image that still accompanies cannabis use today. In July 2006, Marijuana Policy Project called out public officials, including two ex-presidents who had publicly admitted to cannabis use, for a radio campaign that asked, “Is it fair to arrest three quarters of a million people a year for doing what presidents and a Supreme Court justice have done?”

In 2009, it aired a television ad calling for California to regulate and tax cannabis to help pay for education. And last year it managed to show an ad briefly just outside the Brickyard 400 NASCAR race that spoofed the relative safety of cannabis as opposed to alcohol during sporting events.

Compared to a current state campaign that uses slickly designed, humansized laboratory rat cages and warning signs to try and frighten teenagers, “Start Low Go Slow” reeks of common sense.

It portrays cannabis’ risks honestly and includes information that everyone who uses cannabis could profit from. I can’t think of an issue it misses. MPP, which partnered with Medbox for this campaign, is planning television ads and online and print advertising to complement the billboards.

At least part of the reasoning behind it is to counter cannabis-prohibition groups who continue to portray it in the negative terms government has used for too many decades. It’s the old THC fear factor we’ve all become used to and is certainly one of the reasons Americans have turned against

the drug war.

Not everybody was pleased. “This is reminiscent of other addictive industries trying to gain favor in the public eye by telling people to use responsibly,” Kevin Sabet, director of Smart Approaches to Marijuana, the anti-cannabis lobbying organization, told the Daily Beast about the Marijuana Policy Project campaign, adding, “No small ad campaign is going to counter the fact that marijuana is being sold as candies, cookies, brownies, ice creams, and sodas in order to appeal to kids.”
