n their ongoing, all-out assault to crush labor unions, corporate forces have fabricated a cultural myth to undermine popular support for labor: Unions, they insist, are no longer needed. They tell us that in today’s entrepreneurial economy, workers must compete with each other not cooperate.

Before swallowing that wad of horn-

swoggle, let’s revisit Flight 1549. As it took off from New York City in 2009, the jet hit a flock of geese, lost all power and had nowhere to try a crash landing.

But Capt. Sully Sullenberger knew what to do: Use the Hudson River as a landing strip! Amazingly, it worked! Dubbed the “Miracle on the Hudson,” the lives of all 150 passengers were saved.

But no supernatural powers were at work — Captain Sully himself is not only a member of the Airline Pilots Association (APA), but also served on that union’s national governing committee and was its former safety chairman. Indeed, he and the APA union have had to fight airline chieftains who keep trying to cut back on the safety training programs that teach crews how to save lives.

Nor was Sully alone in this “miracle.” The cool-headed flight attendants who quickly moved 150 nearly-panicked people off the plane were mem-

bers of the Association of Flight Attendants, another union that trains to avert disasters. The ferry crews that zipped into action, skillfully maneuvering their boats within four inches of the plane’s wings to rescue passengers — they’re in the Seafarers International Union, which gives them the safety courses that enabled them to respond as they did. The cops, firefighters and air traffic controllers also performed marvelously — all union trained.

At a time when corporate interests in all sectors of our economy are trying to eliminate unions, remember Flight 1549 — the Union-Made Miracle on the Hudson.

guest column The six million dollar question on co-ops

t’s becoming quite clear co-op advocates can’t come up with better arguments other than referring to those of us who disagree with their proposals as rich, white, wealthy, privileged NIMBY classists.

The Daily Camera has been full of guest opinions and letters to the editor on coops lately. Recently, we have been accused of not being progressive enough and the new favorite, “nefariously financially motivated.”

I would like to remind supporters of co-ops that the wealthy here in Boulder don’t have to worry about large co-op rentals moving in next to them. Co-ops activists are specifically targeting the most affordable low-to-medium density neighborhoods in Boulder located on the Hill, Goss Grove, Martin Acres, among others.

Yes I’m afraid it’s true despite all the rumors to the contrary. Most of us living here in Boulder purchased our homes to live in them, not to make a killing on the market. We poured our life savings into them because we wished to put down roots here in Boulder. One of the primary motivators people like myself chose detached homes in areas zoned for low to medium density use was because we wanted to get away from the sheer numbers of people in high-density zones.

I suppose one could make the argument that large numbers of people cramming themselves into small homes would affect property values. But it certainly isn’t about anyone not being progressive enough. After all, this is Boulder.

However, for most of us, it’s about the increase in noise, traffic and parking problems brought on by high occupancy situations. That’s really what it’s about and all that it’s ever been about.

Co-op enthusiasts claim they only wish to put down roots and build a community here in Boulder. I wonder if that assessment includes the infamous, recently relocated Picklebric co-op on the Hill with it’s revolving door of former occupants living in other states who have written the Daily Camera in support of co-ops? Perhaps it’s determined by renting out your room on Airbnb so you can travel for multiple months at a time here and abroad as exampled by some of the most outspoken co-op advocates?

justice warriors” living in glorified crash pads are asking the people of Boulder to subsidize co-ops, they should at least be honest with the community as to what it’s really about. Seeking out the least expensive homes so they can live as cheaply as possible, work as little as possible and pursue their hobbies of travel and leisure with the option of moving on, essentially enjoying a modern nomadic lifestyle.

Here’s the thing, most of us have already done our time living in highoccupancy situations. Now we’ve decided we want something different. We made the decision to opt for the choice of living in quiet single family neighborhoods. I would venture a guess that most of us living here in Boulder have nothing against cooperative or co-housing style living. We want everyone living in our community to find nirvana, happiness and bliss. We just believe it shouldn’t be at the expense of those of us that have made lifestyle choices different from those of co-op supporters, nor should it be at the expense of people that are truly struggling financially and are seeking a legitimate co-op, cohousing living situation.

Co-op enthusiasts often refer to themselves as an “intentional community.” Policy ought to consider, and respect, the fact that “intention” exists in neighborhoods too, not just co-ops.

We could potentially see an argument for co-ops in RH zonings (high density), because existing residents there have already made a choice to live in a high-density setting.

The six million dollar question is why are co-op advocates so adverse to living in high-density, mixed-use or converted industrial/commercial/office zones, where high-density co-op situations would actually be expected? Why are they against rural environments where plentiful space for gardening and multiple vehicles wouldn’t be an issue as well as an acre or more of space between properties?

There’s an appropriate place for everything. The lowest density neighborhoods with small side setbacks in an area full of people who purposely wanted to avoid high concentrations of people, are not the place.”

hat if America had a parliamentary system?

What if we got rid of the presidency and the Senate and turned the House of Representatives into a 435 seat parliament? The Economist recently raised that question. Using polling data of the presidential candidates as of late April, a writer assigned them separate parties based upon their points of view.

That would likely happen if we had a structure which allowed for coalition governments.

There was a graphic which depicted the parties seated in a legislative chamber. The seats were allocated proportionately by census region (North, Midwest, South, West). On the left was a Social Democratic Party led by Bernie Sanders with 113 seats based upon 26 percent of the vote. Next over was a Liberal Party of Hillary Clinton supporters. This was the largest party with 124 seats representing 28 percent of the vote. On the right hand side was the third largest party, Donald Trump’s People’s Party, with 112 seats representing 26 percent of the vote. Then there was the much smaller Christian Coalition of Ted Cruz partisans, and the Conservative Party of John Kasich voters.

None of these imagined parties had a majority. The most likely outcome would be a coalition government of the Liberal and Social Democratic parties.

Now back to American reality. In

this country, people generally do coalition building before the election within either the Democratic or Republican parties. In a country with a parliament, people create a coalition after the election. In a conference call to his convention delegates, Bernie Sanders said he definitely still had his differences with Hillary Clinton but his support for her in the general election constitutes a coalition. He said that such coalitions are common in Europe. Tom Gallagher, Sanders supporter and former Massachusetts state representative, noted that a number of Sanders supporters might not understand this: “American coalition politics, after all, tend toward combining people with generally similar overall views but differing primary interests — such as environmentalists and labor unions, or civil rights activists and feminists. The sort of European inter-party alliances Sanders referred to are not really that, though. They represent agreements between parties with differences that are obvious and well delineated in national campaign debate. A coalition government depends not upon any illusion that the two or more parties don’t have significant differences but on the understanding that they are lesser than those with the other parties in the field.”

Kudos to Boulder City Council members who did the right thing by authorizing county-owned grassland to save the Boulder Armory prairie dog colony. Sadly, the relocation plan offered by the city ecologist and Open Space and Mountain Parks wildlife staff is seriously flawed.

The draft plan recommends using only five nest boxes for the entire colony. I have assisted with several relocations, and I know from field experience that a minimum of 20 to 30 nest boxes will be needed in the receiving site.

Failure to install the appropriate number of nest boxes will result in the death of 70-90 percent of the relocated animals, especially with winter approaching.

It would be a shame and a waste of everyone’s time and resources to relocate this colony only to have the same result as lethal control: dead prairie dogs.

If weed control is an issue here, the land can be re-seeded with native grasses around the nest boxes and burrow entrances next spring. Volunteers are willing to help with this effort — just ask

and we’ll be there to seed and weed!

We must not let these animals die due to careless and incompetent relocation practices! Please email the Boulder City Council (council@bouldercolorado.gov) and Open Space Board (OSBT-Web@bouldercolorado.gov) asking that when relocating the Armory Prairie Dogs (and any future prairie dog colonies), enough nest boxes are used.

Bennett’s mysterious TPP position

Why won’t U.S. Senator Michael Bennet tell us his position on the Trans-Pacific Partnership or TPP? It is not a free trade agreement; it is a corporate heist of government oversight.

More than 200 prominent economists and professors have come out against the TPP, such as Jeffrey Sachs, an economist and professor at Columbia University. Mr. Sachs explains that, “The most egregious parts of the agreement are the exorbitant investor powers implicit in the see LETTERS Page 9

Democratic Party has the most progressive platform in history which was the result of negotiations between his supporters and Clinton’s. He says: “This is the time to elect Hillary Clinton, and then work, after the election to mobilize millions of people to make sure she can be the most progressive president she can be.” That would involve the Democrats winning back the Senate and hopefully the House.

Voting isn’t about expressing your moral purity. It’s about which type of state power you wish to deal with after the election is over. Trump says he will appoint Supreme Court justices from a list provided by the far right Heritage Foundation. Trump claims that Black Lives Matter movement has helped instigate police killings and that he might direct his future attorney general to investigate the civil rights group.

Some feel that a Trump victory would be better for the left because it would get the American people off their duffs and moving leftward in resistance. That’s B.S. Hope, not repression, builds the left. We will be waging a defensive fight for survival under Trump. Do we want to be pressing a President Clinton from the left or having to defend the basic rights of our Muslim, immigrant, Latino and African8 September 22, 2016

American brothers and sisters under a nativist authoritarian? Not to mention our own right to dissent and form unions, etc.

In July, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) released a 27-page memo accusing Trump of advocating “police state tactics” and said his proposals on counterterrorism, border security and women’s rights would routinely violate the First, Fourth, Fifth, and Eighth Amendments.

“If implemented, Donald Trump’s policies will spark a constitutional and legal challenge that will require all hands on deck at the ACLU,” said Executive Director Anthony Romero.

The report says Trump’s plan for a border wall and “deportation force” would escalate the militarization of border communities, “promising a border security approach akin to the fortified shoot-to-kill zones dividing the Koreas.”

The ACLU also expressed concern about the civil rights of American Muslims and his vow to “open up the libel laws.” There is no federal libel law to “open up” but this reveals Trump’s contempt for freedom of speech and the press. For the political revolution to advance, the first priority is to crush Donald Trump and the Republicans in November.

My plan to stop airline gouging

Jim Hightower [Re: The Highroad, “Here’s my plan to stop airlines from gouging us,” Sept. 15, 2016] wants to get rid of airline fees but someone has to pay for services and why not ask the users of the services to pay for them? If the users don’t pay, then its most likely that the non-users will have to make up the difference.

A better way to stop the airlines from gouging us is to fly less. Every time you consider flying ask yourself, “Do I really need to make this trip?”

And if the answer is no, then don’t fly.

This approach will not only force the airlines to compete for fewer travelers, but more importantly it will reduce carbon dioxide emissions that are the likely culprit for the emerging climate change crises that’s hitting us now and will have a larger and larger impact in the years, and generations, to come.

Judy Lubow is the RTD candidate to best address our transit needs

This year we have three candidates vying for the RTD board for our District I. The clear choice should be the incumbent, Judy Lubow. The transportation challenges in both Boulder and Broomfield Counties are significant.

Judy is knowledgeable about addressing these challenges through multimodal means including bus, rail and the new on-demand mobility services.

By working collaboratively with local government leaders, Judy helped organize the advocacy group promoting the analysis of BRT on Highway 287.

RTD has applied for two grants and has already received one to explore the new on-demand transportation technology to integrate with RTD’s transit services. Judy passionately supports the study of this new technology knowing that it is the wave of the future.

The NorthWest rail corridor is the largest unfunded section of FasTracks and still needs to be completed. Judy realizes the importance for our communities that the 2004 vote for FasTracks be fulfilled. She has devoted her tenure as director towards looking for a faster turnaround for funding and construction of the North West Corridor.

The other candidates do not have experience or success in these areas. One of the candidates has never worked on transit issues. She shows a lack of understanding of the complexity of RTD’s challenges. The other opponent is a past RTD Chair. He ignored the buildout of the NW corridor while promoting funding for the other corridors. This resulted in Boulder and Broomfield Counties being last for getting their rail.

Let’s not lose the momentum Judy has gained for us by voting for one of the other candidates.

Many young people have returned to Mexico, continuing their quest for a better life

A

fter graduating high school, Maggie Loredo was faced with a seemingly impossible choice. As an undocumented immigrant, she could stay in the United States with her family and friends, get a false social security card and work in the carpet industry, all while hoping and waiting for the laws to change so she could go to college.

Or she could move back to her birth country of Mexico, where she knew no one, but at least would have citizenship, legal status, the ability to go to work and attend a university.

“At the time, I was the most anti-Mexico, but that was the only opportunity,” Loredo says via Skype from her home in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. “I thought, ‘I am Mexican, I have rights, I can go to college and maybe I can find a way to come back to the U.S.’” It wasn’t until her second year in high school that Loredo understood what it meant to be undocumented. She came to the U.S. when she was 3 years old.

She went to elementary school in Texas, then middle and high school in Dalton, Georgia. But as she wanted a part-time job, her driver’s license and to apply for college, her legal status became increasingly apparent.

“Before that I had no clue about it, I just thought I was as normal as everybody,” she says. “Through my junior year and my senior year I was battling with myself.”

A month after graduation, Loredo made up her

mind. She’d go back to Mexico, live with her grandfather in his small village in the hills above San Luis Potosi, go to school, get a job and embrace a new life.

So in the summer of 2008, she made the crossing at Loredo, Texas, leaving behind family, friends and the only home she had ever known.

“I hadn’t even crossed the border yet and I was already regretting it, but I just had to do it,” she says.

“I came to figure out it wasn’t as easy as I thought. I thought just because I was Mexican it would be really easy. [But] I felt like a foreigner in this country (Mexico).”

Her first day back in Mexico she went to do laundry only to find out she had to go down to the river and wash her clothes by beating them against the rocks. And she had to heat up water on the stove to take a shower.

And then, as she began researching colleges, she realized the Mexican government didn’t recognize any of her U.S. education, which set her on a five-year process to revalidate her high school diploma.

Not only that, she was lonely. She had a hard time adapting to the new social norms and life in Mexico.

It was difficult to relate to her co-workers and eventually her classmates.

That is until she met Dr. Jill Anderson through Facebook.

Texas, moved to Mexico City 10 years ago as part of her doctoral program in Mexican-American literature at the University of Texas at Austin. Since then, she’s married a Mexican national, has two binational children, and has become an immigration activist while continuing to pursue her academic career.

As part of a postdoctoral project, Anderson began talking with young people working in a call center around the corner from her house. Many of them were Dreamers, immigrants brought to the U.S. as children, who went to school in the U.S. and who largely identify with American culture. An estimated half a million Dreamers have returned to Mexico in recent years, either voluntarily or through forced deportation.

For her research, Anderson and photographer Nin Solis traveled throughout Mexico from Chiapas to Merida to Guerrero to Nogales and San Luis Potosi, interviewing young returnees and documenting their stories through photographs and their own words. The resulting book, Los Otros Dreamers (The Other Dreamers), was published in 2014.

“Los otros Dreamers are the Dreamers on the other side of the border in Mexico,” Anderson says. “They are los otros Dreamers in the sense that they are what the Dream Act and the stereotypical dreamer has been defined against.”

The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act was first introduced in Congress in August 2001, as a pathway to citizenship for the millions of Mexican nationals brought to the U.S. as children. To qualify, young people would have to have a U.S. high school degree, no criminal background and be able to demonstrate “good moral character.” Several similar bills have been introduced since then, none of which have passed.

But more than half of the 26 young people profiled in the book would not qualify for any version of the Dream Act. While some have stories like Loredo, voluntarily returning to Mexico, most of them either signed voluntary departure orders or were deported for minor offenses, all of them drug-related.

“There is also a small group that were deported after very minor offenses, such as drinking under age and unsubstantiated accusations of aggression,” Anderson says. What may be seen as a teenage mistake for U.S. citizens, she continues, casts undocumented immigrants into exile.

“The typical dreamer narrative has been defined as somebody who is a valedictorian of their high school who exceeds all expectations academically who has several scholarships to universities that would not admit them otherwise,” she says.

“Many Dreamers in the United States are aware about how that creates a narrative that leaves a lot of their peers, brothers, sisters, cousins, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles out and creates a false sense of worthiness to have these rights of legal protection.”

In the process of compiling the book, Anderson found that many of the young people were experiencing similar barriers as they struggled to re-integrate into Mexican life. Like Lodero, they found it extremely difficult to transfer their school credit to Mexican higher education. “In some ways they are undocumented in Mexico because even though they’re birth certificate and citizenship is now recognized, it turns out their U.S. education is not being recognized,” Anderson says.

She also found that many of the young people she spoke with desired a way to obtain tourist visas to the U.S. to be able to move freely between the two countries, in essence their two lives.

“It really comes from a desire, they don’t want to be undocumented, they don’t want to live in the shadows,” she says. “And in many ways after seeing the sacrifices their parents are making, they are looking for legal options and are insisting on See DREAMERS Page 12

them in different ways.”

However, many returning Mexicans receive multi-year bans on entering the United States under the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA) of 1996.

Among other things, IIRIRA made minor offenses such as drug possession and shoplifting deportable offenses.

IIRIRA also bans anyone who has stayed in the U.S. without proper documentation or who has been deported from obtaining any type of visa for Nin Solis three to ten years, if not longer without obtaining a waiver — a difficult and expensive process. “[Mobility] shouldn’t be a privilege but it is,” Anderson says. “Many are deciding to stay in Mexico. They have been able to make their way, some are married, some have children, they’ve established their lives [in Mexico], but they’ve left so many parts of themselves and their friends and family behind.

So they want binational recognition and mobility. Maybe not binational citizenship but definitely mobility.”

Still facing many bureaucratic challenges, while also unable to see family and friends in the U.S., many of the young people also experience varying levels of depression and post-traumatic stress as they return to Mexico.

“It’s such a loss. It’s a loss of freedom, it’s a loss of future, it’s a loss of identity,” Anderson says.

“There’s a trauma that comes with moving to Mexico.”

And they are often isolated, either unable to access or unaware of mental health services in the process.

However many are also finding solace in the growing community created

by Los Otros Dreamers. For the book’s release, Anderson gathered the young people in Mexico City, many of them meeting for the first time.

“I had no clue that anybody else was in my situation,” Loredo says. “It was pretty awesome to talk about music, food, cartoons, everything that I had never been able to talk to someone in the past five years. That made the difference a lot because it gave me a positive attitude to find a way.”

“Many of them really embraced the idea of being an ‘otro dreamer’ because it gave them a name to an experience that was nameless before that,” Anderson adds.

A year later, in the fall of 2015, Anderson decided to take the book on tour in the United States and asked Loredo to come with her. After being

granted a 10-year tourist visa at the U.S. embassy in Mexico City, Loredo was able to go back to Dalton, to see her friends and visit her high school for the first time in seven years.

And she was finally able to be at peace with her decision to return and live in Mexico. “But that’s how I feel because I was able to go back to the U.S. and if I had not been able to go back, I would probably still be confused,” she says.

Now a medical student in Ensenada, Jaramillo returned to Mexico after his mom was deported, leaving him alone in a country that in many ways still felt foreign. Also traveling on a tourist visa, it will be the first time Jaramillo will be in the U.S. since he left over a decade ago.

The second annual Green Home Tour showcases sustainable and affordable innovative homes

ccessibility to sustainable residences is an important part of mitigating climate change. In the U.S., residential buildings account for 21 percent of all domestic energy consumption and 20 percent of all carbon dioxide emissions. U.S. buildings as a whole, including commercial and residential, account for 40 percent of all domestic energy use — more than both the transportation and industrial sectors.

In the face of such statistics, the Green Home Tour is back to showcase the 10 most innovative sustainable homes in Boulder County — from homes with edible landscaping to apartments that you can virtually heat with a hair dryer. In its second year, the self-paced tour aims to showcase the diversity of sustainable living situations available to the average budget.

According to Juana Gómez, committee member of the Colorado Green Building Guild, these 10 innovative homes go way beyond solar panels and energy-efficient appliances.

and an unconventional air ventilation system to cut down on heat escape and drafts. This system can be used in any building, from an apartment to a school, and is so prominent in Germany that the government has mandated “Passivhaus” status for all residential apartments by 2025. The affordability is in part what makes the passive building system so accessible: Depending on the size of the building, the added cost can be no more than 5 to 10 percent more than a conventional construction.

Attendees will also see the Willow Sage co-housing project, a NorthBoulder neighborhood with communal facilities composed of 34 attached townhomes and a communal house. Residents share chores and meals along with a laundry room and common yards in a variation of communal living. For Gómez, this is exemplary of the social changes needed to affect a sustainable society.

“Green living is beyond brick and mortar,” she says. “It’s also about social consciousness: living in neighborhoods, and in commons, and sharing.”

Sustainable living options such as the ones showcased as part of the tour are some of the ways the Green Building Guild hopes to engage the community in mitigating climate change through the residential sector.

And in an affordable way.

Not only does the residential sector account for much of our energy consumption, but accessing new, sustainable technology is pricey. Getting a home LEED certified, which is one of the most popular sustainable rating systems for commercial and residential buildings, can cost tens of thousands of

dollars up front, even though the investment is typically returned years down the road.

Recognizing this problem decades ago, Boulder County established tax incentives and rebates for sustainable development, along with some of the strictest energy codes in the country, according to Gómez. “[Local government] is very progressive and does a great job of promoting sustainable living,” she says. “They were really at the forefront of the push in the last 15-20 years to make Boulder a greener city.”

That progressive stance has molded the sustainable ambitions of Boulder, which include pursuing energy municipalization and 100 percent renewable energy production by 2030. And, it has established Boulder County as a leader in sustainability that has attracted environmentalists from all over the nation.

Gómez credits the fantastic environmental culture in Boulder for the large turnout at last year’s Green Home Tour. And this year’s event expects to draw up to 500 people.

“In many ways we are at the forefront of energy technology and the exchange of ideas,” she says. “[The tour is] a great place to start people who are encouraged to be living sustainably, and is also a draw for people who just like to see things done well and beautifully.

I think that goes a long way.”

they’d shown us the way back to our casas particulares, talking about their families in the States.

Some of us had sought sacred divination with Olorichas, the fully initiated priests and priestesses of Santería.

We’d gotten a feel for the warmth of Cuba. The people excitedly greeted us when we said we were Americanos. They repeatedly told us they were glad we were there. They asked if we would come back in the future.

Trundling south on July 5, leaving the comfortable embrace of Havana’s bustling streets, our 15-passenger busload of American journalists was en route to the Bay of Pigs.

The time felt right to ask the hard questions.

What does all this mean? What was the reality of the Revolution?

Do people trust Castro, or is he the despotic villain the U.S. government had made him out to be?

Is he even still alive? Are people afraid to speak openly about Castro’s regime? What does the end of the embargo mean for Cuba? Do the Cuban people want capitalism? Will capitalism destroy everything that is unique about the “Pearl of the Antilles”?

“Alright,” said our tour guide Andy after a few questions made it clear that his group of gringos was ready to venture into political territory. “Let’s kill this pig now.”

e’d been in Cuba for nearly four full days before a few of us felt brave enough to ask questions — honest ones — about the Cuban government, or, more pointedly, about life in Fidel Castro’s 57-years-and-counting regime.

We’d spent the previous three days, the first days of July, filming in the capitol — throughout Old Havana, along Paseo del Prado, in Plaza De Revolucion, at Bodeguita Del Medio (where countless personalities have gone for cold mojitos on hot Havana afternoons), in Hemmingway’s Finca La Vigía, through the Technicolor artists’ Elysium that is Fusterlandia, beside the Malecón.

On U.S. Independence Day, we filmed in front of the U.S. Embassy in Havana. In the summer of 2015, Secretary of State John Kerry traveled to Havana to officiate the reopening of the embassy that was closed in 1961 when the Eisenhower administration severed diplomatic ties with the government of Fidel Castro. Seeing the Stars and Stripes fly over the imposing Brutalist architecture of the embassy was an exercise in emotional awareness: There was joy at the easing of long-held tensions; there was shame it has taken this long; there was fear of culture-crushing globalization, of Westernization — of the return of U.S. imperialism to the island.

We’d talked to dozens of Cubans by this point.

Some of us had played baseball with a small group of children in front of Hemmingway’s home. Some of us had walked arm in arm with residents of Old Havana as Boulder Weekly

10-day journey through Cuba, entertaining every question and opening up to us about their lives in Cuba.

From Havana to Cienfuegos to Trinidad to Camagüey with stops in between, our time in Cuba was spent retracing the early life of Guillermo Vidal, a Cuban who, at 10 years old, found himself in Colorado via what has been called the largest mass exodus of unaccompanied minors in the history of the Western Hemisphere: Operación Pedro Pan. The evacuation program began shortly after Fidel Castro was sworn in as Prime Minister of Cuba in February of 1959. As Castro established an increasingly Communist regime, speculation and fear began to grow.

Rumors spread that the new government would send children to the Soviet Union to serve in work camps.

Cubans with the means to do so began to emigrate to the U.S..

Caitlin Rockett In 1960, Father Bryan O. Walsh of the Catholic Welfare Bureau met a 15-yearold boy who had immigrated to Miami. The boy was living with relatives who were unable to provide for the teenager, and Walsh saw a need that was bound to grow as Fidel Castro built his new government and more Cuban parents feared for the safety of their children. With funding from the Eisenhower Administration, Walsh created Operación Pedro Pan to provide air transportation to the United States for Cuban children. In a time when U.S.-Cuba relations were tense at best, the program operated without publicity out of fear it would be viewed as an anti-Castro initiative. see CUBA Page 22

Our visas required that we embark on educational activities while in Cuba, not just activities that directly related to our documentary.

We lucked out when we got Andy as our tour guide. The 31-year-old Guantanamero is not only a walking encyclopedia of facts about Cuba, he was also a never-ending fountain of positivity and mirth during our time on the island. On days when the thermometer topped out at 32 degrees Celsius and the humidity was not so much a theoretical percentage but an actual entity to wrestle with, Andy kept us hydrated and laughing.

Andy speaks four languages, and his English is tinted with an Australian accent, a byproduct of learning from Aussie professors at university. His wife is an economist, and they have 4-year-old daughter. Andy once taught salsa in Trinidad with a group of talented dancers, who later in our trip gave us salsa lessons and met us out in the famed city for a night of rum and dancing.

Perhaps it’s because we’re all the same age, but my roommate (to whom I am eternally grateful for getting me in on this project) and I became very close to Andy. We understood one another. We spoke the same cultural language, one of the late ’80s and early ’90s music that typified our childhoods and the early aughts fashion that characterized our teenage years. We yearned for the same things: a planet that knows more peace than war, a global dedication to the fundamental human right to education and health care.

Despite the fact our countries had no diplomatic ties during the entirety of all three of our lives, we had far more in common than we had differences. It felt like meeting a long lost brother. And I can say that everyone in our group, despite their age or upbringing, felt the same way, like Andy was a family member, someone to be trusted.

So Andy wasn’t annoyed when our blunt questions finally began to pour out — he knew they were coming, and he was ready. He started by talking about the time before Castro took power, during Fulgencio Batista’s reign.

Batista was the elected president of Cuba from 1940 to 1944. He became a dictator between 1952 and 1959 before being overthrown during Castro’s Revolution.

“Until Castro, the U.S. was so overwhelmingly influential in Cuba that the 22 September 22, 2016

ADVENTURE American ambassador was the second most important man, sometimes even more important than the Cuban president,” said Earl T. Smith, the former U.S. Ambassador in Cuba, during a testimony to the U.S. Senate in 1960. Smith claimed that nearly all aid from the U.S. to Batista’s government was in the form of weapons, which “merely strengthened the Batista dictatorship” and “completely failed to advance the economic welfare of the Cuban people.”

Cubans were starving. They were murdered by the thousands. It was a dark time in Cuban history, and the U.S. government was seen as being indifferent, even antagonistic, toward Cuban welfare and liberty. By 1959, U.S. companies controlled so much of Cuba’s resources — sugar lands, cattle ranches, mines and mineral concessions, utilities, the oil industry — that it was hard to believe the U.S. would do anything but support Batista, a man who made all this U.S. profit possible.

Castro’s administration was able to play on this view of the American government and garner support for the Revolution. And who could blame Castro or the Cuban people for wanting to be free, of both Batista and the U.S.?

Of course Andy wasn’t alive when the Cuban Revolution began, but he does remember the período especial in Cuba.

The so-called “special period” began at the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1989. It created an economic depression in Cuba as the Soviet Union was no longer able to provide Cuba with petroleum.

Once again, many Cubans starved.

Andy lived with his grandparents in Guantanamo. He remembers having a happy childhood. He told us he never wanted for food, but in the early ’90s he began to notice things change around his house. There was a flower vase on the windowsill of his grandparent’s kitchen. His grandmother would fill the vase with rice to hold bouquets of plastic flowers. She would eventually feed the rice to the pigs.

But one day Andy came home from school and watched his grandmother take the rice from the vase and put it in a pot of boiling water for that night’s supper.

Andy recounted how during that time period, many Cubans were lashing together makeshift rafts to journey from Havana to Miami. This was just another wave of emigration out of Cuba. I remembered being a child and hearing jokes about Cubans floating to the States in old car tires. As Andy spoke of the “special period,” I began to cry.

So, Andy said, it’s impossible to summarize what every Cuban feels about Fidel Castro. It’s an equally impossible task to summarize what every American citizen feels about any current or former Boulder Weekly

president. But what Andy could say was that Cuba had suffered deeply before Castro, and the Revolution had improved the lives of innumerable Cubans. Had Fidel been in power too long? Yes. Was he wrong about many things, like his persecution of the LGBTQ population?

Yes, and even Castro himself has admitted to that. Could Fidel be dead? Of course. And the list goes on.

For Andy, an older millennial just like myself, Castro is a symbol of a past

that, perhaps unfortunately, lingers on into the present. But the Revolution is not something to be dismissed. It was an experiment that has not entirely failed.

The Cuban people enjoy relative safety (especially when compared to their Latin American neighbors), access to health care (though they are often in need of basic supplies, like ibuprofen) and free post-secondary education.

We knew, at Andy’s admission, that his job as a tour guide was, as most jobs

in Cuba are, a government job. But I never questioned his answers. He rehashed topics and spoke frankly with us over and over during the remainder of our trip. Every conversation ended with smiles and hugs and a promise to continue at the next chance.

Five days later I cried once again as a plane lifted off to take us back to Miami.

The only question that really matters to me now is when I’ll see Andy again.

Writer G. Willow Wilson talks relatable superheroes and the variety of the American experience

Willow Wilson has spent her life telling stories. She’s told her own in her graphic novel Cairo and memoir Butterfly Mosque.

She’s chronicled the escapades of a young Arab-Indian hacker in her novel Alif the Unseen. She’s written dialogue for the likes of Aquaman, Superman and the X-Men. And in her latest comic book, she writes for Ms. Marvel, aka Kamala Kahn, a 16-year-old Muslim shape-shifting superhero living in New Jersey.

“Stories are how we build our identity. Nobody sits down and watches CNN and says, ‘Oh, I’ve had a transformative experience and my whole philosophy has changed. I’m going out and being a totally different person.’ I mean maybe they do,” Wilson says with a laugh. “But usually there are things that prompt those big deep dives. Those soul-searching changes in us come from stories.”

From a young age growing up in Colorado, writing was the only thing Wilson wanted to do. And her love of comics started early, specifically in health class one day when she received an anti-smoking booklet starring the X-Men. “It must have worked because I never took up smoking,” she quips. “The thing that really stuck with me were these characters who seemed to have it all figured it out. We can’t sort of ignore this experience of half the human race or assume that their experiences are not also sometimes universal.’ The evolution of that, and now to Kamala.”

Living in such a diverse world, Wilson says, it would be a disservice to this generation to continue to pretend that the white American experience is the only one. But comic books are a medium that evolves with time and with its storytellers.

“That’s what’s cool about superhero comics. You get these characters who are 60, 70, 80, 90 years old, and who have been reinvented for each new generation to reflect the specific issues of that generation,” Wilson says. “To me that’s what Kamala is. Carol had something very specific to say when she first came around as Ms. Marvel, and now that she’s evolved into Captain Marvel, the conversation has changed. And Kamala is a continuation of that conversation of who we are.”

And what is Kamala adding?

“I wouldn’t presume to sum it up in one sentence, but she’s trying to say that being American means a lot of different things. And that heroes don’t all look the same or speak the same language or believe the same thing.

The thing they share in common is they do what’s right even when it’s difficult,” Wilson says.

She calls Kamala lightning in a bottle and credits the comic’s success to the fans, calling the audience the magic ingredient.

“We could have done this exact series 10 years ago and it would have flopped,” she says. “Today there’s a critical mass of enthusiastic, wonderful, creative, committed comic book readers who like to have fun, who are less into the dark and gritty, and are into some kind of optimism. But at the same time, they don’t shy away from confronting real life issues.”

Unlike many superheroes, Kamala doesn’t come from a broken home, nor is she seeking vengeance. Kamala has both parents, a brother and a sister. As a child of Pakistani immigrants, Kamala struggles with her faith — a choice Willow says was intentional, as the comic’s creators didn’t set out to write a “model minority book,” where life is perfect.

just a teenage girl, who happens to be a shape shifter, dealing with the same drama — succumbing to the standards of beauty or failing at living up to expectations. These issues were essential to make the character real to her readers, which ultimately is the point of Wilson’s work.

“I think no matter how fantastical the story that you’re writing,” Wilson says, “if you can’t give the reader something they can walk away with and use in their life then you haven’t done your job.”

one else looks at it, but music is weird, it goes away. It is fleeting, you know? Where does it go once you play it?”

On the stage, familiar songs take on new life, each time telling their story a little differently, keeping a slightly different rhythm, staying true to their origins and reinventing themselves at the same time.

Similarly, Greene is a bridge between history and future, constantly bringing his music to the next generation without forsaking the traditions of the past.

And, over the past 10 years Greene has progressed from the young talent in fine company to the leader of the pack — a powerful and humbling transformation to watch.

It’s powerful because he stepped into the role of conductor, orchestrating the notes as they are played and elevating everyone in the process.

It’s humbling because Greene seems to lead as if from behind, making everyone else shine more brightly, forsaking his own spotlight for the proverbial love of the game.

The result is ever-evolving music, each performance adding to the last.

“Let’s say you go see a concert and you hear your favorite song — that becomes the definitive version, that time you saw it,” Greene says. “It could be different every time, sometimes it is a lot different, sometimes not so much. Every time I go on stage it is a chance to make it a new, definitive version of every song we play.”

Greene feels a sense of relief in shedding constancy and embracing change — a messy style that fits Greene well, but is ill-suited for anyone who wants to take the blue collar out of being a rock star.

“I think there is a lot more power in just creating day-to-day art and music and whether or not you are commercially successful kind of doesn’t really matter,” Greene says. “For me being successful is more a matter of the art that you are able to create in your lifetime and what you are able to put out, music wise, in the world.

A successful life for me includes all of those things: It includes music, it includes a family, it includes some sort of stability financially, it includes — you know I hate to say it — but sort of the normal things in life.”

Lately, he’s used this artistic mentality to explore other media — from photography to painting and linoleum block prints — where Greene is getting the chance to see his otherwise immaterial process take on a physical form.

“Basically I make huge messes,” Greene says. “I have paint everywhere. If this were the music studio, there would be cords and tables and shit lying around, but it’s paint and it’s everywhere. There is paint on the floor, for God’s sake.”

No matter what art form, creating is a fundamental part of living for Greene. The end product is often unrecognizable from its origins, but Greene says that’s more than OK — that’s how it should be.

“That’s part of the fun of the whole thing,” he says. “You don’t really know what’s coming.”

A self-described blue-collar rock star, but a rock star nonetheless

It’s

easy to picture the life of a hard working musician — playing late into the night, touring long cross-country miles on a bus, lugging equipment from town to town.

But when Jackie Greene mentions work, that’s not the kind he’s talking about.

“As an artist, I am supposed to be vulnerable,” he says.

“It’s my job.”

Music may be Greene’s art and his language, but it’s also his livelihood. Some say it’s the kind of job you’re born to do and yeah, talent is important, but to watch Greene play is to watch 35 years of life exploration pour out, each time better York Wilson than the last.

His approach to music is susceptible and open, with the kind of wisdom that knows beauty happens when you are just as impressionable as you are creative.

Back to Birth, his latest album from 2015, is his most personal yet. The album is full of the honest truths of his day-to-day and, just like good folk music, it feels like sitting with a good friend while he tells stories about love, loss and the hard road of life.

Greene’s vulnerability is evident in his voice, in his expressions, in the way his hands strum the guitar, strike the piano or orchestrate the other musicians on the stage — it’s as if the music relies on Greene’s rhythm for its own.

Since his early 20s, Greene has played with Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Neal Casal, Gov’t Mule, BB King, Tim Bluhm and the Black Crowes, to name a few. In sharing the stage, Greene’s art and life is reminiscent of the so-called gurus in his artistic lineage. He’s been able to assimilate their knowledge of music, allowing it to leave a mark on him in the process.

Perhaps more notable than any stylistic similarities are those that lie beneath. The various artists in Greene’s musical lineage have each maintained an enduring humility, rarely succumbing to the vanity of their stardom. Instead, their popularity only seemed to fuel and inspire their love of live music.

Greene is likewise emerging as a master of live performance and comes at it with a sincere curiosity explored through an emphasis on the present.

“As an art form, [live] music is funny because you play it and then it is gone,” Greene says. “Not like a painting — you paint a painting and it is there and it is the same when someBoulder Weekly

Donovan Leitch heads to Boulder Theater to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Sunshine Superman, the album lauded as beginning the psychedelic revolution. Saturday brings another day of festivities, including the building of the world’s largest bratwurst, malt sack races, a best-dressed contest and music from Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band, Gabriel Kelley and Bright Light Social Hour. Stop by Trident Booksellers on Sunday to hear from journalist and author Marsha Scarbrough, who will be talking about her book Honey in the River: Shadow, Sex and West African Spirituality. The presentation will feature an exploration of the mythology and healing techniques of a West African people, the Yoruba. Percussionists are encouraged to bring drums, as the event presentation will include music and movement. Scarbrough will also be sharing recordings of chants, rhythms and songs of the orisha, the deities of the indigenous Yoruba religion, Ifa, to showcase sounds that accompany her book.

ooking for a way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month? The Sie Film Center has a few ways for you, 15 in fact. Back for a third go around, CineLatino is one of the Front Range’s newest and best film festivals, and from September 22–25, CineLatino takes over the Sie with 12 narratives and three documentaries for a celebration of Latino cinema.

CineLatino kicks off Thursday night (Sept. 22, 7:00 p.m.) with The Vessel from writer/director, Julio Quintana. Shot on location in Puerto Rico, The Vessel is set in a town so ensconced in the aftermath of tragedy, that all of the women wear only black.

Ten years ago, a tidal wave struck the seaside village’s elementary school, killing all the children inside. A small community to begin with is suddenly threatened with obsoletion in one fell swoop. The local priest (Martin Sheen) tries the best he can to instill faith back ON THE BILL: CineLatino. into the community, but to make that happen, he Sept. 22-25. Sie Film Center.

The Vessel is Julio Quintana’s first film as director, but he is far from a newbie to the business.

Quintana is the protégé of three-time Oscar-winning cinematographer In The Vessel, a town is struck by tragedy and it’s up to a local priest to try to reawaken the community’s spirituality.

Emmanuel Lubezki who, along with legendary director Terrence Malick — who is also an executive producer for The Vessel — developed a new and enchanting way of looking at the world. The Vessel contains Lubezki and Malick’s fingerprints, but Quintana eschews abstraction in favor of story, and he presents The Vessel in a straightforward manner with unabashed spiritualism.

The result is an impressive debut from a strong new voice. And that new voice, along with lead actor Lucas Quintana and producer Maria Quintana, will attend CineLatino’s opening night festivities.

CineLatino is also the Front Range’s first chance to view director Pablo Larraín’s metafictional biopic, Neruda (Sept. 23, 7:00 p.m.). Neruda, Chile’s submission for the 2016 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, explores the poet and political figure Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco) after he became a fugitive in his own country. The future Nobel Laureate manages to stay one step ahead of the ambitious officer (Gael Garcia Bernal) hot in pursuit. Larraín is a director who’s stock is on the rise — he was recently awarded the Silver Medallion at the Telluride Film Festival and the Platform Prize at the Toronto International Film Festival for his other new film, Jackie. With Neruda, Larrain flexes his stylistic muscles while embracing the poetry and imagination necessary to bring Neruda to life.

Like all worthy festivals, CineLatino offers something for everyone. A free screening of Nacho Libre (Sept. 24, 11:00 a.m.) starring Jack Black as a cook in a Mexican monestary who starts professionally wrestling as a luchador to raise money is perfect for young cinephiles looking for a laugh. For adults looking for something completely left of the dial, Neon Bull (Sept. 24, 9:30 p.m.) is a fascinating and unusual look at a Brazilian team of cow herders that work alongside traveling carnivals. Much like the director Gabriel Mascaro’s previous film, August Winds, Neon Bull presents an image of the world rarely seen and beautifully photographed.

A classic cookie with a silly name Insomnia Cookies’ scrumptious snickerdoodle

A

n upcoming move has made things hectic around my house lately. The stress of constant productivity — packing, cleaning, yet another trip to Goodwill — has led to a thorough exploration of the eateries in my neighborhood. It’s an attempt to contain the madness as much as possible... but mostly it’s a tactic to save time and precious energy.

But on some nights when there are no groceries in the house and tensions are running high after a confusingly heated discussion about whether the living room should be admiral blue or thundercloud blue, things get even lazier. When we can’t bring ourselves to even put on shoes to make the quartermile trek to the neighborhood Indian joint, we surrender all shame and order delivery.

One recent evening, the stress of moving merged with the stress of being a journalist with deadlines — and if I’m being frank, with the constant underlying stress of being a quasi-functional adult human being. Simple comfort was in order.

Something warm, something sweet, something childlike.

In a moment of reckless abandon, free from shame or guilt or fresh fruit, I ordered a batch of cookies from Insomnia Cookies.

Insomnia started out in 2003 in a dorm room at the University of Pennsylvania. As such, the spreading chain is operated to cater to college towns full of hungry, stressed-out students looking to bliss out on some

warm, comforting carbs at 2 a.m. when they realize they still don’t understand alkene transformations and that maybe pre-med isn’t the right career path.

Alternately, it seems equally well suited to calm two exhausted adults who are perfectly primed to rumble about where the forks live in the utensil drawer.

Listen, I can’t discriminate against cookie flavors because they each cater to a different cookie desire, whether that’s for the chew of an oatmeal raisin or for the warm gooey ooze of a hot chocolate chip, but nothing spoke to me like Insomnia’s snickerdoodle cookie.

Maybe I’m under the spell of the snickerdoodle’s silly name. I found a reference to “snickerdoodle” in an old Joy of Cooking book.

“Their name may be a corruption of the German word Schneckennudeln — which translates roughly as ‘crinkly noodles.’”

Wikimedia links a source that says the name might also be one in a long line of nonsensical American food name names.

“Snickerdoodle comes from a tradition of this sort

that includes Graham Jakes, Jolly Boys, Branble, Tangle Breeches, and Kinkawoodle,” according to an entry in culinary resource What’s Cooking America.

Whatever the case, I love snickerdoodle cookies.

Delivered hot and fresh within half an hour of placing the order, Insomnia’s version of the classic cookie with the silly name did not disappoint.

At the first bite it was difficult to place what ingredient gave these cookies their richness — was it vanilla extract? No, by the second bite it was obvious.

The answer was butter — a lot of it.

Too warm and too soft to survive being picked up whole, it’s best to break pieces off of these monstrous cookies right out of the box.

And don’t worry if you forgot the milk — Insomnia can deliver that too.

Isn’t it about time you got to know the best parts of the chicken?

L

ike any parent, I wait until I see my child in person to have The Talk. So when Hans unexpectedly visited last weekend from his home in Oregon, I got my son alone in the car. Fathers like to do that because the kid can’t escape.

“Are you cooking much chicken these days?” I asked innocently.

He smiled and told me about cutting boneless, skinless chicken breast into chunks, coating them with black pepper, salt, garlic and various green herbs including chives and sautéing them in olive oil with diverse vegetables.

You can well imagine my deep disappointment. I thought I had raised my offspring with proper values, including a healthy disdain for chicken breasts in favor of thighs.

Years ago I was a true believer in skinless, boneless chicken breasts because they were diet-friendly and low fat. I cooked them every which way but fried. see NIBBLES Page 44

There was just one problem with the ubiquitous poultry item: They were dry, easy to overcook and often When purchasing flavorless. (OK, maybe that’s three problems.) I figured that if I was going to eat chicken it should taste chicken-y. As I taught Hans how to cook as a child, I encouraged him to devise a marinade and sauce to make the inevitable chicken with veggies and starch a little more interesting. He and I came up with the recipe below, although honestly, the formula changed depending on what was in the fridge. The dark, aromatic Grade B maple syrup is the real secret to balancing the flavor.

While Hans was here, we had a wonderful reunion dinner with family and dear friends and a menu that included spiralized zucchini with ghee, roasted root vegetables and mirasol chilies and a gluten-free Palisade peach pie. Ironically, we also were in charge of grilling some local, sustainably raised chicken breasts. They were a revelation — big, juicy and full of chicken flavor that lasted days later as leftovers. The takeaway for me is that I was prejudiced, that it’s always worth it to invest in the best poultry possible and to always appreciate the whole bird.

Hans said he was always cooking the same few things at home and thus departed with clean clothes and my copy of Fay Levy’s International Chicken Cookbook (Warner) which is several years older than him. He said he probably won’t actually follow any of the cookbook’s 300 recipes from 75 countries but it would give him ideas. Like father, like son.

The following recipe adds a ton of flavor to chicken, no matter the part, as well as vegetables and other proteins.

Sweet Hot Chicken Marinade

5 tablespoons soy sauce 1/2 cup Grade B maple syrup (or honey) 2 tablespoon toasted sesame oil (or olive oil) Fresh lemon juice and slices Fresh ground black pepper Cayenne pepper, chile flakes and/or sriracha sauce, to taste Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Taste, adjust seasonings and thin as needed. Tenderize chicken by stabbing all over with a fork on both sides and soak in marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour and preferably overnight. Grill, sauté or roast to desired temperature. To use the leftover marinade as a sauce, bring it to a rolling boil for at least three minutes, strain and serve. see NIBBLES Page 46

W

hy bother burying the lead: Wild ON TAP: Wild Woods Woods’ Nectarine Thyme Saison Brewery. 5460 (5.9% ABV) is one of the best beers Conestoga Court, Boulder, 303–484–1465.

I’ve ever had. Full stop. It’s been three days since visiting Wild Woods’ unassuming East Boulder digs, but I can still taste the delicious tart of the drupe play against the subtle herb of the thyme. And it’s a saison to boot, which brings a fair amount of yeast with a hint of pepper into this glass of rustic heaven. It’s a full-fledged meal, one that transported me to the picnic table outside of my grandparent’s farmhouse. The early evening summer light was slipping behind the trees while the cicadas droned on. All was right with the world.

That sense of the outdoors is precisely what Wild Woods is going for, though its aim is a little more mountainous than my family’s Midwestern vegetable farm.

Located one block off of Arapahoe and Conestoga, Wild Woods’ tasting room is on the smaller side — roughly 10 seats at the bar, 16 at the tables and another couple of dozen out on the patio — but it’s as intimate and open as a garage can get. The ponderosa green paint and cabin wood paneling help, but not nearly as much as what comes out of the taps.

As the name might denote, Wild Woods’ décor matches owners Jake and Erin Evans’ passions. Originally from Wisconsin — his background is engineering, hers is nursing — the two found their way to Boulder eight years ago where they encountered a plethora of beer and camping, their two loves. A few years later, the idea of Wild Woods was conceived around a campfire in Crested Butte. That campfire is still burning brightly in their Smores Stout (4.9%), which is a delicious harmony of graham cracker, chocolate and slightly charred marshmallows. The owners may love the outdoors, but this is the kind of campfire I prefer.

The Smores Stout achieves its unique characteristics thanks to roasted barley, biscuit and chocolate malts plus some complex sugars which are then aged on rich cacao nibs. Wild Woods’ other taps feature similar specialty ingredients that bring drinkers outside the confines of Boulder and transport them to the wide-open spaces of the outdoors. The Banana Nut Hefeweizen (6%) is certainly an eyecatching beer on the page and the glass delivers on the promise. The Wildflower Pale Ale (5.6%) is fresh and floral with a hit of soft jasmine, the Berry Patch Wheat (5.5%) is standard American wheat with a bright berry puree — it’s like raiding a ripe berry bush — and the Ponderosa Pine (5.6%) has a pleasant and toasted quality with vanilla undertones.

Wild Woods opened its doors in September 2012 as a two-barrel nanobrewery.

They have since expanded to a perfectly sized neighborhood seven-barrel brewhouse that has a strong sense of identity. They know what they like at Wild Woods and they are happy to share that with Boulder. I just hope they don’t share too much of that Nectarine Thyme Saison, I’ll be back for more.

To legalize or not to legalize, that is the question

A

record number of states will vote on marijuana initiatives this November. In five states — California, Arizona, Nevada, Massachusetts and Maine — voters will be asked whether they want to legalize recreational marijuana and a handful of other states will vote on legalizing medical programs.

Whether or not these initiatives pass, their inclusion on the ballot represents a push away from prohibition as states try to write a new chapter in drug policy. While the nuances of each state’s measures are unique, they all consider economic, public health Wikimedia Commons and human rights.

The odds are stacked against recreational cannabis. But, despite the uncharted terrain, lack of access to banking and federal illegality of the product, existing legal markets are booming.

Nationally, the industry is valued at $7.1 billion and Colorado makes up about 10 percent of that amount. The state’s industry could surpass $1 billion by year’s end if 2016 sales continue at the last year’s pace.

It isn’t just cannabis businesses that benefit from those sales, but the states, too. In Colorado, all cannabis sales are taxed at the retail rate of 2.9 percent and recreational sales at an additional special use tax rate of 10 percent. Collectively, Colorado’s pot industry brought in $32 million from January to July 2016, not including revenue from licenses and other fees.

With the money coming in and nothing but growth in the forecast, it’s easy to see why economic considerations of marijuana tend to dominate legalization considerations.

But there are downsides to the burgeoning indus-

try, including risks associated with federal prohibition.

Or, the conflict of interest introduced by allowing a legal industry to become the solution to damages done to public health and human rights by prohibition.

The intersection of public health/human rights and marijuana is difficult terrain to navigate, confounded by the lack of information and data available on the subject. The prevailing sentiment from experts and stakeholders seems to be that we don’t know a whole lot and that only time will tell how legalization and decriminalization will play out.

This sea of uncertainty owes mainly to federal prohibition that places many barriers to cannabis research, scientifically or sociologically, precluding the data necessary to establish a baseline by which to measure progress.

Nevertheless, states that have already adopted legalization are wrestling with public health issues along three main vectors: harm reduction, abuse prevention and medical merits.

Colorado has already laid a strong groundwork for minimizing youth access to marijuana and is working on ways to both measure and address incidentals like cannabis related traffic accidents or the occasional dabbing fire.

While stymieing the potential negative impacts of legal marijuana is important, so too is maximizing the potential positives, such as counteracting the opioid epidemic or increasing access to pain relief medications.

There are also a litany of human rights issues wound up in the legal status of cannabis, perhaps most notably the oppression of communities of color

through the political mechanisms of the war on drugs.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), marijuana use is roughly equal among blacks and whites, yet blacks are 3.73 times as likely to be arrested for marijuana possession.

Legalization offers a potential solution to address that disparity by presenting a legal industry as a vehicle to restore the harms caused by criminalization.

It also has the added benefit of cutting police enforcement, which rings in at about $6.3 billion a year nationally.

Unfortunately, legalization is not necessarily an end to these issues but, as time is showing, is only perpetuating unequal treatment under the law by another name.

Despite the fact that 70-80 percent of arrests for cannabis possession are happening in communities of color, it is estimated that under 1 percent of the growing legalized market is owned and/or operated by individuals of color.

“The marijuana industry, the reform movement, and policymakers need to not only ensure diversity and inclusion in the industry but also eliminate structural barriers that stack the deck against communities of color,” said Bill Piper, senior director of the Drug Policy Alliance’s Office of National Affairs and moderator of a recent congressional briefing about diversity in the marijuana industry. “Marijuana legalization without racial justice risks being an extension of white privilege.”

While ballots can only offer two options for legalization, the issue is far more complex than the binary suggests. Making decisions in the gray area is difficult, but stepping into the unknowns of legalization is preferable to prohibition of which the downsides are certain. But by choosing uncertainty comes a lasting responsibility for voters and policymakers alike — to ensure that legalization does more than call an old evil by a new name, but instead works for real change that improves economy, health and equality.

or decades, the nation’s drug warriors have argued that marijuana should be illegal because its use results in users eventually turning to more dangerous drugs like heroin.

This is the so-called “gateway” drug theory. It has always had a phony ring to it. Those of us who have favored marijuana legalization have long argued that the only thing about marijuana that might make it a gateway to the harder illegal drug world was its illegality — and that the way to close the gate was to make marijuana legal.

Now it turns out that the pot prohibitionists core contention was even more profoundly wrong than we thought.

It turns out that marijuana use does not lead to opioid addiction, as they contend, but that the opposite is true. There is a growing body of evidence that in states where medical marijuana is legal and available through dispensaries, fewer prescriptions are written for opioids like OxyContin, Vicodin and fentanyl — which have been implicated in tens of thousands of overdose deaths — and overdose fatalities in those states have dropped.

In the most recent study, researchers from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health analyzed traffic fatality data from 19992013 for 18 U.S. states. They found that most states that passed medical marijuana laws saw an overall reduction in fatal crashes involving drivers

who tested positive for opioids.

“We would expect the adverse consequences of opioid use to decrease over time in states where medical marijuana use is legal, as individuals substitute marijuana for opioids in the treatment of severe or chronic pain,” said lead author June H. Kim, a doctoral student at Mailman, in a statement.

The study, published last week in the American Journal of Public Health, is among the first to look at the link between state medical marijuana laws and opioid use.

Medical marijuana laws, the authors concluded, are “associated with reductions in opioid positivity among 21- to 40-year-old fatally injured drivers and may reduce opioid use and overdose.”

According to a recent investigation conducted by the Associated Press and the Center for Public Integrity, sales of the drugs quadrupled from 1999 to 2010, rising in tandem with overdose deaths.

“Last year, 227 million opioid prescriptions were doled out in the U.S., enough to hand a bottle of

pills to nine out of every 10 American adults,” the AP investigators found. In 2014, more than 14,000 Americans died of overdoses associated with prescription opiods.

Dozens of studies have found that marijuana is effective for chronic pain management, which is what most opioid prescriptions are written for.

And if pot is available, a substantial number of people turn to it for managing chronic pain instead of to opiods.

So perhaps it is not surprising that one of the companies that manufactures fentanyl is fighting the Arizona marijuana legalization initiative.

The company, Insys Therapeutics, donated $500,000 to Arizonans for Responsible Drug Policy, the political committee that is opposing the Arizona initiative. The donation amounts to about one-third of the money the anti-legalization committee has raised so far.

The company is under investigation for fraud and kickback schemes to induce doctors to write off-label prescriptions for its version of fentanyl, which is 100 times more powerful than morphene and supposed to be used only for the treatment of pain by cancer patients.

Company spokespeople have the temerity to say it is donating to the anti-marijuana initiative because the initiative (Proposition 205) “fails to protect the safety of Arizona’s citizens, and particularly its children.”

Ah, yes. They’re doing it for the children.

Not that Insys has anything against cannabinoids, mind you. The company has developed a drug based on a synthetic form of it for pain control which it’s trying to get approved. It has admitted in one of its filings with regulatory agencies that it might not be profitable to bring the drug to market if it had to go up against natural pot.

Tom Angell, a spokesman for the pro-marijuana group Marijuana Majority, made the obvious point: “It’s difficult to understand how people who profit from selling a drug like fentanyl can keep a straight face while arguing that marijuana is just too dangerous to legalize.”

WE BLAME LANCE ARMSTRONG

If Lance Armstrong taught us anything, it’s that people love to put things on their wrist to show that they’re healthy. Literally anything. In the early aughts, hoards of people spent their hard-earned dollars on yellow pieces of rubber to show the world that they too care about healthy lifestyles. (Livestrong bro!) Sure, maybe some of those dollars also went to cancer research, or at least that’s what Armstrong led us to believe after he won all those bike contests — high on “life,” wink wink.

Wikimedia Commons The newest craze is basically just a pedometer bracelet. You remember pedometers? Those things your parents clipped on their belt to prove to each other that those five extra pounds they put on weren’t due to lack of exercise.

Well now they come in a variety of colors, with apps, accessories, a pony, and all those modern doodads you convince yourself you need, then find discarded in a drawer a few months later. These new fangled fitness trackers are a great way to remind yourself just how short of a walk it is from your desk to the kitchen to get a bagel. (“Aw, come on, it’s gotta be more steps than that!”)

All those bracelet-wearing “athletes” must have been very disappointed to hear that those fitness trackers actually lead to less weight loss than those with bare wrists. A new study found that those who didn’t wear a fitness tracker, and followed a low-calorie diet, lost 13 lbs. over two years, while those who wore one lost 7.7 lbs. Bummer, man. I guess they got distracted by all of the pretty colors and charts tracking all their steps that they forgot they were on a diet and ordered that double fudge sundae. Oops.

WE CAN’T JUST WATCH

There are times in this life where you just can’t believe what you are hearing and seeing. Times that make you feel like screaming or moving to Costa Rica and disconnecting yourself from the internet, TV and basically the world. The recent bombing of a U.N aid convoy in Syria is one of those times for many reasons.

Let’s start with what that convoy was doing there. The murdered aid workers were taking food and medical supplies to innocent men, women and children who are starving to death in between having their limbs blown off and burying their loved ones.

So a bunch of gutless murdering assholes, using airplanes and missiles, killed all the aid workers and destroyed all the supplies. And now the whole damn world is pointing fingers and denying any involvement. This isn’t rocket science folks.

Russia and Syria have planes and missiles in the area. The U.S. and Turkey have planes and missiles in the area. Wow, guess that means we just can’t ever know who did it. At least that’s the idea you’d get if you listened to all the governments playing war in Syria these days. But it’s absolute B.S. There is not plane, helicopter or even a damn buzzard flying in Syrian airspace that isn’t being fully monitored by a U.S. AWACS plane and/or satellite. We know exactly who killed those aid workers and destroyed their life-giving cargo. We know where the flights were launched from and where the aircraft returned after the strike. We know where the missiles were fired from and most likely exactly what kind they were. So why is our government sitting in silence as these war crimes are carried out day after day? Politics.

Our handling of Syria is a sad day for this country. Our lack of action to assist the millions of Syrians who are dying as a result of lack of food and shelter and a place to turn for help is one of the most shameful moments in America’s history.

Our silence when it comes to telling and showing the world who is responsible for the attacks on aid workers and Doctors Without Borders’ clinics is beyond disgusting. We deserve the truth, no matter how hard it may be to deal with.

If we just sit by and watch we are responsible for what unfolds before our eyes.

We don’t have to go to war to help Syrians. But we do have to feed them, treat their injuries and give them asylum. And then sanction the living hell out of every country responsible for their harm. That is also the best way to fight terrorism in case you haven’t figured that out by now.
