Highroad Here’s my plan to stop airlines from gouging us

n one of Stephan Pastis’ Pearls Before Swine comic strips, his character, “Rat,” develops a smart phone app that I want. As Rat explains it: “Whenever your bank charges you some stupid fee for something, you just tap this little button here.” Oh, asks another character, does the app file a complaint? “No,” says Rat, “it summons a herd of bunnies that parachute in and eat the bank’s CEO.”

Now that’s a useful app! However, I’d also want it to sic the bunnies on today’s airline executives, for their fees have become stupider than bank assessments. For example, airlines even charge you a fee for calling to buy a ticket from them! Also, while the price of jet fuel has plummeted, they’re still stinging customers with a fuel surcharge fee that adds up to a totallyunwarranted multibillion-dollar, corporate windfall — siphoned right out of our pockets.

How do they get away with such brazen robbery? By colluding with each other to prevent customers from having any real choice — and by regularly doling out campaign donations to keep Congress critters from interfering with their monopolistic gamesmanship. Thanks to a frenzy of megamergers, only four airline giants — American, Delta, Southwest and United — now control 80 percent of

all domestic airplane seats, and most of our airports are dominated by only one of the Big Four, leaving fliers at their mercy. By dividing up the market, colluding on fares and fees, and effectively bribing Congress, airlines hauled off a record $33 billion in profit last year — an increase of nearly 90 percent over the previous year!

But, hey, they say they’re going to share that with us. How? By handing out a little bag of snacks to each of us passengers. Perfect — they gouge billions out of our wallets, then literally try to placate us with peanuts. It’s time to call in the bunnies.

C

aring for the health and safety of our children and families is common ground where Americans on the Left and the Right meet.

Yet, during this election cycle, few candidates seem willing to talk about the health and safety risks caused by toxic industries. Instead, the false split between environment and jobs is used to divide people and to allow major corporations to continue to poison our children.

But after a month of horror stories — pipeline ruptures in Louisiana, Texas, and the breaking news of North Dakota’s largest oil spill in state history; plus a deadly gas explosion in Maryland and the evacuation of residents because of massive lead poisoning in East Chicago, Indiana — liberals and libertarians alike should be questioning their assumptions about the role our government does — or should — play in regulating industry.

Liberals need a sharp wake-up call about the realities of the corporate-oligarchic government (Big Gov, as the conservatives and libertarians like to call it). Rather than fulfilling the ideals of a powerful body that protects the health and safety of the people, the corporatepolitical collusion manages to bend, break and manipulate every law on the books to increase their profits at the expense of our safety. If government is supposed to protect us, it’s failing its duties.

Libertarians need to drop their fantasies of a deregulated state, and instead, do some soul-searching to come up with a reasonable explanation for how our children will be kept safe from these powerful industries that have demonstrated over and over their willingness to poison our children for the sake of their profits.

As for our “family values conservatives,” the question to ponder is: If you love your families so much, why, for

God’s sake, do you allow your political candidates to neglect the health and safety of your children by refusing to support higher standards of air and water quality controls? Why do you allow them to thwart attempts to introduce legislation to protect the land, rivers and oceans that your children’s food comes from? Why do you disregard the need for basic health and safety regulations on toxic industries?

In this year’s election cycle, there has been a notable silence about the health and safety risks caused by industries like oil, gas, coal, mining and manufacturing.

Why? Because politicians can get away with caring more about the profits of their corporate sponsors than the wellbeing of your children. They’ve been allowed to parrot the false claim that “what’s good for business is good for everyone.” (Which is obviously not true for the lead-poisoned residents of East Chicago, Indiana.) We’ve allowed the politicians to dupe us into believing that jobs are the silver-bullet solution to all of our social woes. Plenty of jobs do not poison and pollute. Those that do are not worthy work.

There is no job on Earth that justifies the poisoning of our children. There is no amount of money that we can gain from jobs that can pay the price of our children’s lost health. There are no jobs

that are worth the cost of the everincreasing amount of United States soil and water that is contaminated with toxins. We have 1,322 Superfund sites, and numerous other toxic locations. The Yellowstone River, the Kalamazoo River in Michigan, the Animas River in Colorado and the San Juan River in New Mexico, the Dan River in North Carolina, the Elk River in West Virginia have all been heavily contaminated in recent years. How much more of this assault can the health of our people and our land sustain?

We need our politicians to stop ignoring or glossing over these concerns.

Left and Right should stand united on this issue. The health of our nation’s children must be put before profits. The sanctity and vitality of our air, land and water that keeps us alive comes before the interests of rich and powerful individuals. Our politicians must take a stand now, not during the next election cycle. Now, before it is too late. Now, before one more child is poisoned.

“A single debate can turn a race like this on a dime. And so can an ‘October Surprise.’ A month from now, the Clinton campaign could be on life support. For that matter, a month from now Clinton could be on life support.

“What’s more, who do I think will win is the wrong question. The correct question is: Who do I think is going to lose? This year’s election is as likely to be decided by people who vote against a candidate as it is by people who vote for

one.”

“Your election was rough, but I didn’t think it was a rough as today’s,” I said. “People weren’t calling you insane, like they’re doing to Trump, for instance. And they weren’t calling you crooked, like they’re doing to Hillary.”

“Heh!” he snorted. “True, the insanity thing didn’t get as bad as it has with Trump, but even in 1968 people were calling me paranoid.

“And as for the comparison with Hillary, does the phrase ‘Tricky Dick’ mean anything to you? Defining me as deceitful and dishonest became a Democratic Party parlor game almost from the day I entered politics. Trump is just getting the old Nixon treatment.”

“Well they don’t have Nixon to kick around anymore,” I said.

“Touché,” he said, tightly.

“People remember how disliked I was,” he went on, “but they’ve forgotten how detested Humphrey was too. And Wallace, of course.

It was Richard Nixon.

“I just got a gig covering the election for Fox News,” he said. He was positively giddy.

“Well, they’ve had a lot of vacancies,” I said. “But why did they turn to you?”

“They said I was uniquely suited to cover this year’s presidential campaign.”

“Why’s that,” I asked skeptically.

“Because both of the major candidates are as disliked as I was,” he said enthusiastically. “In 1968, I proved it was possible to get elected even if a can-

didate was disliked by millions of the people who voted for him.

“If this year’s election was a popularity contest, it would be impossible to pick a winner,” he added.

“I can’t remember anything like it,” I agreed.

“Au contraire,” he said firmly. “This year’s election bears a striking resemblance to the 1968 election in which I was elected for the first time. The parallels are positively uncanny.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Start with the numbers,” he said.

“It was a three man race in 1968: Nixon, Humphrey, and Wallace. I won with 43.4 percent of the vote. Humphrey got 42.7 percent and Wallace got 13.5 percent.

“Now look at the Real Clear Politics (RCP) average of polls for today’s race.

So did a lot of socially conservative northern Democrats who thought the Democratic Party had been taken over by hippies and peaceniks.

“So there are a lot of parallels between this year’s election and 1968: Two major candidates who are about as popular as dead skunks in the middle of the road and voters who will be voting for a president they detest.

“No, it’ll be a return to civilization as we knew it,” he said.

“And Trump?” I asked.

“That’s easy,” he said. “He’ll govern like me. He’ll govern center-right while passing a lot of environmental and social legislation that Obama couldn’t have gotten through Congress in his wildest dreams — even if he knew what he was doing. Like I did when I got Congress to create the EPA. He’ll go to China and go to Russia and sign great deals, like I did. It’ll be huge. Trust me.”

cated for relocating the Armory prairie dogs to city open space, I’m very concerned about the company that has been hired by the developer to perform the actual relocation. This Kansas based contractor claims, on their website, that they live trap 94 plus percent of the prairie dogs within five days. However, all reputable prairie dog relocation specialists based in Colorado have indicated this is implausible. It is a fact that live trapping prairie dogs takes weeks, not days, and even then there will be

many prairie dogs who elude trapping and must be captured using an alternate method. The traps used by both the Kansas and the Colorado relocators are identical, and everyone uses the same food to bait them. There is no magical bait that prairie dogs find irresistible and which will temp most of them into the traps in so few days.

What then can account for the difference? Perhaps it lies in the one glaring distinction between the Colorado relocators and the Kansas

relocator: The Kansas-based relocator is also a prairie dog exterminator. It wouldn’t be hard to imagine this “relocator” trapping for five days and then quietly killing most of the remaining prairie dogs and claiming that they trapped 94 percent of them.

It would be difficult to contest or disprove any claims, and most of the public would assume the job has been done correctly and humanely. But consee LETTERS Page 8

sidering that their willingness to kill prairie dogs is the one thing which completely differentiates them from the relocators who don’t double as exterminators, this would seem to be a very plausible scenario to explain their suspiciously high “capture” rate.

The local advocates who fought so hard to save the Armory prairie dogs want a successful relocation that includes capturing as many of the prairie dogs as possible. It is very clear that hiring a mindful relocator who doesn’t double as an exterminator is the only way to ensure that the highest number of Armory prairie dogs are relocated to their new home.

Regarding the article “Facing the Flesh” [Nibbles, Sept. 8] More and more I read about carnivores who want to “feel good” about where their meat comes from. The usual writer’s cliché is that people who slaughter animals “know where their meat comes from,” as if slaughtering your own meat is some lofty virtue.

A disconcerting aspect of the upcoming presidential election is its similarity to the Humphrey/Nixon race of 1968. With the backdrop of the turmoil of the Civil Rights and anti-Vietnam War Movements, the Gene McCarthy campaign, and the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, the election pitted an Establishment Democrat against a Lawand Order Republican appealing to a “Silent Majority” of older white voters.

The disillusionment of young voters (equivalent to today’s “Millenials”) with the Democratic Party was a major factor in the election of Richard Nixon and all its future ramifications.

Also of historical concern is the 2000 contest between Al Gore and George W. Bush in which the thirdparty candidacy of Ralph Nader (and a curious spate of votes for Pat Buchanan in Florida) led to Bush winning in the Electoral College despite Gore winning the overall popular vote. Here again there were future ramifications.

Similarly, Ross Perot’s campaign helped Bill Clinton be elected.

The current Clinton/Trump contest, with the overwhelming focus of both parties on how catastrophic will be the outcome if the opponent wins, is discouraging enough without these gloomy historical precedents, but, as the Buddhists say, we shall indeed see what the future brings.

The protest was held next to the statue erected in 1980 as a tribute to Chief Niwot, the Arapaho people and, according to the plaque, to “sensitivity and respect for nature which is inherent in the Indian culture.”

n Tuesday Sept. 13 and 14, more than 200 separate protests were held across the country against the Dakota Access pipeline. The protests, three of which were in Colorado (Boulder, Fort Collins and Denver), were an effort to show solidarity with the Native Americans and others who are currently camped out near Cannon Ball, North Dakota, in an effort to stop the construction of the controversial pipeline.

The 1,172-mile pipeline is being built by Texas company Energy Transfer Partners. The purpose of the pipeline is to transport between 470,000 and 570,000 barrels of oil per day between the Bakken field of North Dakota and oil storage facilities in Illinois.

The pipeline is currently planned to cross the Missouri River at a point near the reservation of the Standing Rock Sioux. The original protest started when members of the tribe blocked construction of the pipeline after stating their concerns that it threatened the reservation’s water supply — which comes from the Missouri River less than a mile from the proposed path of the pipeline — as well as noting that if construction continued on its current course, it would likely destroy sacred lands, archaeological sites, artifacts and possible burial locations.

As construction continued, the tribe filed an emergency motion for a temporary restraining order, but the U.S. District Court Judge overseeing the motion denied it and construction continued. Private security guards used dogs and pepper spray to clear protesters from the pipeline’s path and as a result, some important sites, artifacts and potential burial sites have now likely been bulldozed.

On Sept. 9, several agencies of the federal government temporarily suspended pipeline construction on a small piece of land owned by the Army Corp of Engineers, bringing Energy Transfer’s North Dakota operations to a halt... for now.

Representatives from tribes all across the U.S. and Canada along with many other supporters have established a camp near Cannon Ball where the efforts to stop the pipeline are now centered. Protesters say they will remain through the winter.

Approximately 150 people protested in support of the Standing Rock Sioux’s efforts in Boulder on Tuesday.

Brothers offer glimpse of Venezuelan free fall and its lessons for all of us

A

s a young man living in Venezuela, Jose Garcia remembers being woken up in the middle of the night by his mother to watch tanks storm the Miraflores Palace in the capital of Caracas. It was 1992, and the Venezuelan military, led by Hugo Chavez, was attempting a coup d’edat against the democratically elected President Carlos Perez. In the end, the coup failed and Chavez was imprisoned.

Only four years later, Chavez himself was democratically elected president of the country, with roughly 60 percent of the population voting for him, including Garcia.

“The sentiment was that the system was basically serving itself,” Garcia says. “People revolted against the system and basically wanted another revolution. But revolutions don’t guarantee a better state.”

Garcia says he witnessed first hand the aggressiveness and corruption of previous governments, and therefore, like the majority of his country, wanted radical change.

“My father was shot and almost killed before Chavez came to power,” he says. Incorrectly assuming Garcia’s father, a cattle rancher in the Andean city of Merida, was driving a stolen vehicle with hopes to sell it in nearby Colombia, law enforcement “just came up, no questions asked, and shot him with a military rifle. So that was the kind of stuff that [Chavez] said they were going to change.”

Over the next decade, Chavez increasingly consolidated political power while nationalizing private industry, all in the name of his socialist revolution. At the same time, global oil prices surged to all time highs and with its oil-rich lands, money poured into Venezuela.

“Those were good years,” Garcia says. “There was plenty of money in the streets, people were eating.

When you have such a landfall of money, it doesn’t matter if you’re running the economy into the ground.”

Now, just three years after Chavez’s death, Venezuela’s economy is in complete disarray as inflation has reached 720 percent in the last year and the Boulder Weekly

Nicolás Maduro, Chavez’s named successor, has faced increasing unrest as thousands of protesters gathered in the beginning of September demanding a recall referendum, hoping to oust the leader by the end of the year.

Although Garcia has lived in Nederland since 1996, the rest of his family still lives in Venezuela.

Due to the growing unrest and violence as a result of the failing economy, Garcia hasn’t been back to visit in several years. However, his younger brother Marco Antonio Garcia Noguera is visiting the Boulder area

while his exhibit The Faces of Little Luck is on display at the The Dairy Arts Center.

Based off a series of photographs documenting ordinary Venezuelans as they wait in line, sit in traffic or eat what little they have, Noguera’s paintings depict the emotional realities of present day life in the country.

“I feel the pain of the people who are hard working. They are trying but they are barely surviving,” Noguera says. “I feel that we pulled the lucky straw because we have what we have.

Why is it that we live well? That we are one of the few?”

For Noguera, his father’s cattle ranch provides enough for the family to buy goods at highly inflated black market prices, but he doesn’t know how the majority of the population survives. Official exchange rates still estimate 9.98 bolívars to the dollar, but Noguera says the black market has reached 1,000 bolívars to the dollar. The Washington Post has reported the value of the Venezuelan currency has decreased by 99 percent in the last three years alone while it is estimated that three out of every four Venezuelans live below the poverty line.

“The economy is decaying exponentially fast in respect to the moment Chavez died,” Noguera says. “The decay is exponential. In the last three years our entire way of life has disappeared.”

He consistently sees people digging in the trash, desperate to find food, he says. As a result of hyperinflation, roughly 80 percent of the population has to stand in line for the basic fundamentals such as corn flour and powdered milk, as well as household items such as toilet paper and deodorant.

“On Fridays they start getting organized because the material will start arriving 48 hours later,” Noguera says.

“Your position in line is highly valuable, in fact it’s a commodity that you can trade ... And the final result of this is two bags of 2 kilos of corn flour after 48 hours in line. From my point of view, I have no idea how people live.”

NPR, the New York Times and others report that most Venezuelans exist on less than three meals per day.

Noguera says, he’s visibly noticed many of his friends lose weight. And although his girlfriend, who has epilepsy, survives off of medicine sent by relatives living in the U.S, most Venezuelans aren’t as fortunate.

In addition to food lines and rolling blackouts, the economic crisis has resulted in a public health nightmare, as infant mortality rates surge and people succumb to treatable conditions due to a lack of supplies in hospital.

Antibiotics, cancer medicines and other prescriptions are almost impossible to come by, save for the black market. The New York Times has also reported that surgeons lack necessities, such as soap, water and electricity, often leaving them little choice but to operate on soiled gurneys, while malaria cases have increased 72 percent in 2016 alone.

Garcia adds that in 2014 his uncle died in agony of cancer in the hallway of a hospital, on a bed still half covered in blood.

Noguera says everyone has stories of minor thefts and muggings as well. He’s been chased by people he assumes were trying to steal from him, and at one point a man was pulling a gun out of his waistband as Noguera ran the other way.

“My mom, just before I came, we were buying vegetables in the market and when we came back to the car everything was taken,” Noguera says. “A week later, she was driving and stopped, waiting for the light to change and a guy knocked on the window and robbed her.”

“In Venezuela we say, ‘It’s not if, it’s only when,’” Garcia adds.

Even Garcia and Noguera’s father, despite having enough resources to provide the fundamentals for his entire family, faces security issues, as the crime and murder rates in the country have dramatically increased. Their father also faces increased harassment from law enforcement while delivering meat and cheese from his ranch to local markets. “Now my father gets arrested every other day because he’s a very strong man and he’s tired of being abused,” Garcia says. “He gets arrested or detained because he refuses to pay the bribe or yield his goods.”

And as a school teacher, Garcia’s mother has been severely affected by inflation.

“Right now she doesn’t even have money to eat,” Garcia says.

“The teachers get paid about $30 a month and there is unrest almost every 15 minutes, and so a semester turns into a year, a year into... Every two minutes there is a strike, there’s another unrest, they are burning tires again.”

Despite the time investment, Noguera says he doesn’t expect to earn a living in the engineering field after finishing his degree.

“There are teachers, with Ph.Ds, 30 years to be tenured professors and they are making, say, $50 a month. What can I expect [to make] with a bachelor’s in civil engineering?” he says. “In the short term I want to finish my education. And then if the economic and political situation doesn’t change, I will try to live any other place.”

As the economic crisis continues and efforts to create political change fail, Noguera has noticed classmates become increasingly submissive.

Although thousands of students protested after Maduro was narrowly reelected in the spring of 2013, hundreds were arrested and detained as “traitors to the homeland,” while there have also been reports of torture.

“The college students know that there is no hope that the people can actually change things because traditionally in Venezuela, the military takes control,” Noguera says.

If nothing changes at home, if Maduro doesn’t allow for a referendum and the military doesn’t give up political control of the country, “Everyone who can leave, will leave,” he says. “It will be the biggest exodus from Venezuela.”

Freehouse is resource for off-grid vacation rentals

F

or green enthusiasts, off-grid housing is emerging as a way to actualize sustainable living. Whether as a means of reducing consumption, returning to a more primitive lifestyle or as a political action against reliance on the proverbial “man.”

Self-reliant, these homes don’t depend on “the grid” — a network of public municipal systems that provide utilities. Instead, these properties provide for themselves using renewable energy for power, well systems for water and composting systems for waste treatment. Or sometimes forgoing utilities altogether.

But in Colorado, off-grid housing predates the sustainability movement existing as a reality of mountain living. Over time, various self-sufficient shelters were built on the vast Western landscape — like ski huts far in the backcountry, hunting lodges in hidden forests and humble adobe huts at the end of long dirt roads.

While many a Colorado family has or knows someone who has an off-grid property, few people live in these homes all year round — whether due to the seasonality of access or the practicalities of modern living, many off-grid properties are second homes.

It wasn’t until the rise of Airbnb that there was a way to both increase use and monetize

“We only list properties with no outside infrastructural support,” he says. “That is where the line is drawn. Some of our places have internet, some of them don’t. Some of them you have to hike or ski miles in just to get to them, some of them you can drive right up to. Either way these properties are out there — off the grid.”

The concept for the startup is woven into the Stillman’s relationship. Two years ago, they were married in Mexico at an off-grid property

owned by Sarah’s father, a prophetic beginning for the business that would be born a few years later.

“It is a relief to get way out there and be all alone,” Jason Stillman says. “One of the really cool things about going off the grid is that you are out there and usually don’t have neighbors or other people around so it is an opportunity to do whatever you want to without bothering anybody.”

A rebellious smile spreads across his face as he tells about the celebratory bonfire they built on the beach after the wedding. A remark from Sarah’s brother sums up the sentiment well, he says: “No cops, and nudity.”

Liability issues aside, there are other concerning implications of off-grid vacation rentals, such as the environmental impact of increased habitation in secluded environments — especially in sensitive ecosystems such as the high alpine or desert where many of Freehouse’s properties are located.

For example, the San Juan mountain range in Colorado is rich with cryptobiotic crust, the uppermost layer of soil rich with bacteria, lichen and moss that takes decades to grow just a few millimeters deep. Freehouse hosts a handful of properties in the area, a nice getaway indeed, but such a delicate ecosystem can be destroyed by a single unknowing footstep.

For the Stillmans, those are worries for another day. They have only had a handful of rentals so far and feel comfortable that property owners maintain enough control over their properties to put a stop to any adverse environmental or community impacts.

As Freehouse grows, the young couple is starry-eyed, dreaming about all of the possibilities within their business’ niche. But for now they are happy to be working on an outdoorsy business of their very own, and they are also taking the chance to get away themselves.

“Right now success for us could mean a lot of things, but I just hope we get to go see some of these properties for ourselves,” Sarah Stillman says, as a big smile spreads across her face.

BY BOULDER WEEKLY STAFF TEST FLIGHT OF LOW-COST MINIATURE SOLAR OBSERVATORY

The Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) tested its Solar Instrument Pointing Platform (SSIPP) on Aug. 29, in San Antonio, Texas. The SSIPP is a complete, precise and powerful solar observatory that operates in a near-space environment, around 20 miles above the surface of the Earth, free from distortions that could be caused by Earth’s atmosphere.

Using an optical table that has instruments to collect infrared, ultraviolet and visible light to create a “solar ultrasound,” the SSIPP takes images of the sun’s atmosphere to understand the properties that accompany the eruption of convection cells on its surface. The SSIPP has optical precision akin to imaging a dime from 1 mile away.

The SSIPP is relatively inexpensive at $1 million, costing 10 times less to create Wikimedia Commons/NASA than similar observatories made for balloon travel. And it’s relatively small and lightweight, weighing only 160 pounds. It is also reusable, making it a possible blueprint for the development of more lowcost research equipment designed to go to the edge of space.

Originally intended to be on rockets going into space, the SSIPP has been re-purposed for balloon flight. NASA’s Flight Opportunities Program funded the World View stratospheric balloon that the SSIPP will be riding to the edge of the Earth’s atmosphere.

GOLD KING MINE NAMED SUPERFUND SITE

More than a year after the Gold King Mine spill near Silverton, Colorado, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has added the area to the Superfund program’s National Priorities List, joining over 1,300 other sites.

The Superfund program has been in place since 1980 to clean contaminated land and to respond to environmental emergencies, and sites get added to the National Courtesy of EPA Priorities List when they threaten public health or the environment.

On Aug. 5, 2015 millions of gallons of yellow-orange waste water containing arsenic, lead and other heavy metals came rushing out of the Gold King Mine, in the Bonita Peak Mining District, and into the Animas River. Holding around 880,000 pounds of metal, the spill affected drinking water in Colorado, Utah and New Mexico.

At the time, the area was already under investigation by the EPA. The spill was caused by an EPA mining and safety team sent to pump out contaminated water, which had already been leaking into nearby Cement Creek.

The spill has already cost the EPA more than $29 million in water quality testing and response to the disaster, with millions more estimated to be spent, and the cleanup of the Animas River could take years, or decades to fully complete.

In addition to the Bonita Peak Mining District, the EPA listed nine other new Superfund sites on Sept. 7, including contaminated areas in New York, Montana, California, Texas, West Virginia, Louisiana, Ohio, Indiana and Puerto Rico.

Ain’t too much for me to jam

Single mom, roller derby jammer and all-around badass Havilah Curtis makes everything look easy Story by Caitlin Rockett photos by Susan France

A

s Havilah Curtis suits up before she takes the roller derby track, she slides a band with the number 147 stitched on it up the bicep of her left arm — her league number, created by combining the birth months of her three children.

When Curtis hits the track she’s Havoc, the lead jammer for the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls. And while she’s hell on wheels when it’s game time, the word havoc doesn’t describe Curtis at a glance.

Her demeanor conveys confidence, control and efficiency; viridescent eyes shine through thick lashes, framed by deep brunette hair that cups the apples of her high-set cheeks. She’s no more than 5-foot-4-inches, and while weight was never discussed, one could reasonably guess she’s around 100 pounds with a single-digit body fat.

When she speaks she is clear and concise, but not at the expense of being warm and inviting. Her complexion is smooth and unblemished, perhaps the see ROLLER DERBY Page 22

She just turned 34 this year.

Curtis has done a lot and she does a lot — it’s kind of just who she is: roller derby jammer, single mom, former gymnast, speed skater, Jiu Jitsuka, small business owner, former high school science teacher, model; Curtis never stops looking for the next challenge.

Curtis says she started training in gymnastics when she was around 2 years old.

Her’s was a story most gymnasts’ parents are familiar with: “I was jumping on couches and flipping off,” Curtis says. “My parents were like, ‘Wow. OK.’ And they enrolled me.”

She competed at the highest level for 12 years, even training to qualify for the 2000 Sydney Olympics when she was 17 years old.

And then she got pregnant.

“It basically ended my gymnastics career,” Curtis says. “But I began my mother journey.”

There’s no frustration in her voice when she talks about moving on from gymnastics. Curtis makes it seem very matter-of-fact: that chapter of her life was closBoulder Weekly

ADVENTURE ing and another was beginning. It’s easy to get the impression that Curtis doesn’t look back often, perhaps because it’s unsafe to look backward when you’re traveling forward at such speed.

Curtis continued to foster her athleticism after her daughter was born.

She got into speed skating while she was in school at the University of Colorado Denver, where she was working on her secondary education degree in biological science. She was a threenight a week regular at Skate City in Aurora, practicing and blowing off steam. It was about three-and-a-half years ago that Curtis was rounding the rink in Aurora when she saw girls from the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls league handing out flyers for tryouts to join the league.

Curtis took a flyer and thought, “Well I could do that.”

She tried out, got accepted and got hooked — which is understandable.

Roller derby leagues are filled with unstoppable women just like Curtis.

“It’s really empowering within a group of like, 120 females who all work together to build this strong empire,” Curtis says. “Everybody works hard to keep it going. And not only is it friendships, they become your second family.”

And that’s because joining a roller derby league is no trivial commitment for those who truly want to play.

Leagues are not for profit; each team member pays to play. Everyone has to have a job, everyone has to pay dues, everyone has to attend so many practices and everyone has to promote games.

Like with all other endeavors in her life, Curtis not only worked her way up to lead jammer for the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls, she also took on the lead role in securing finances for the league, a job she calls “one of my greatest accomplishments.”

“I’m the one who goes out there and brings in the money,” Curtis says of leading sponsorship for the league. “It’s another full time job. I have a team who works under me — I couldn’t do it without them. It’s so rewarding to be able to say, ‘I just got this sponsorship for $3,000.’”

Curtis is responsible for building relationships with local businesses, negotiating and drafting contracts, all so the Rollergirls can keep on rolling.

Right now, Curtis says all of the league’s funds are in savings to purchase a warehouse for the girls to practice in.

The Rollergirls are currently practicing in the Rocky Mountain Roller Hockey League facility in Lakewood, but it’s not their forever home — finding a warehouse has become difficult, Curtis says, Boulder Weekly

with the booming marijuana industry.

As the lead jammer for the Rollergirls, Curtis takes her position seriously — she’s the one who scores points for her team. You can find her in the gym five times a week, without fail.

“Strength and conditioning is very important to me. I have this weird idea that if I’m strong and I’m fast, it’ll be easier for me to jam,” she says. “My strength adds to my ability to be in control of my skills on the track.”

Control is a key word in derby.

Derby isn’t run-of-the-mill, middleschool-birthday-party rollerskating.

Jammers have to be capable of moving through packs of other skaters in order to collect points. It requires agile footwork: 180-degree turns, shuffle and crossover steps. If an opponent has a leg stuck out, a jammer needs to be able to jump it and keep skating.

Curtis speaks easily about roller derby, from her role with the Rocky

Mountain Rollergirls to the history of the sport. It’s clear she loves it. And like everything else she’s committed to her in her life, she commits to roller derby fully, and she does it without sacrificing her commitment to her children or her job or her sanity.

“My kids come with me to practice, that’s how I do it,” she says with a laugh. “My kids know the team, they see ROLLER DERBY Page 24

know my kids. It’s a family friendly environment. Kids 12 and under get free admission to bouts. I don’t know a league in the world that charges kids for roller derby.”

Curtis says her kids are proud of their mom, while being different from her.

Her oldest writes music, plays multiple instruments and draws. Her 8-year-old “is gonna be as tall as a basketball player but can’t throw a basketball,” she says with a smile. “He’s an artist, a mathematician, a magician.”

“And my 5-year-old is gonna be the next heavyweight champion of the world,” she says. “He just started jujitsu.”

Curtis clocks even more face-time with her kids by taking jujitsu with them. As a single mom, it just makes sense.

The roller derby world has been steadying for Curtis — a place filled with other women just like her.

“It’s such an empowering place to be for a single mom because you don’t need anybody else. You’re working toward a goal and with a team of other strong athletic woman who are all there for the same goal: to become better.”

As for Curtis’ next goal, like always, she’s got big plans. She hopes to train for obstacle courses like the Tough Mudder. She’s got another venture she wants to talk about but she says the words every journalist dreads hearing: “You’re going to love this, but you can’t write about it just yet.”

Looks like we’ll have to wait and see what Havilah “Havoc” Curtis has up her sleeve next.

Denver exhibit shines light on forgotten artists who pioneered abstract expressionism

n 1950, leaving behind conscious form, Grace Hartigan took her paints and translated her thoughts on the canvas in a burst of red, blue, yellow, black and white brush strokes. With the title, “The King is Dead,” she referenced the end of Picasso’s cubist reign and celebrated the beginning of the first truly American art movement: abstract expressionism.

The form emerged in the middle of the 20th century, post World War II. Whereas before, artists would migrate to Europe to learn the tricks of the trade, American painters were finally embracing their own styles and shaping their own expressions.

Hartigan was a prolific artist during this period and one of its pioneers, although her name might not necessarily be as familiar as that of artists like Jackson Pollack or Clyfford Still. Hartigan’s work will be featured with 11 other female artists in Women of Abstract Expressionism, on display through Sept. 25 at

Denver Art Museum. Joining Hartigan are Mary Abbott, Jay DeFeo, Perle Fine, Helen Frankenthaler, Sonia Gechtoff, Judith Godwin, Elaine de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, Deborah Remington and Ethel Schwabacher.

Curator Gwen Chanzit got the idea for the exhibit in 2008 after traveling to New York for another showing of abstract expressionism.

This show is a step toward rectifying the lack of visibility for women artists.

“The art histories have really been lopsided,” Perle Fine “Early Morning Garden” (1957) Chanzit says. “When I took my first art history survey back in the day, we used Jansen’s History of Art, a huge tome. Not one woman in it, and none of us even thought about it, really. It wasn’t until the mid ’80s that women artists were included.”

Chanzit attributes various reasons for the oversight of women.

During the heyday of abstract expressionism, women struggled for equality in most areas of life. The movement is also known for its macho stereotype — for many reasons, but partly due to the rebel cowboy image of Pollack. Since the exhibit opened, Chanzit says she’s received countless tips about more women artists during this period or in this genre. A textbook author even mentioned that he would be doing a revision of his book to include some of the artists from the show.

Chanzit says she never set out to do a women-only show, but she hopes this is a step in direction, rendering future gendered shows unnecessary. In an effort to figure out who was missing from the expressionism canon, she turned up the spotlight on these unsung artists.

“One of the things I carefully avoided was to give a message about ‘those poor women,’” she says. “That was never the point in this exhibition.”

After Denver, Women of Abstract Expressionism moves on to the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the Palm Springs Art Museum in California in 2017.

For their new album, Big Gigantic brings in some vocal talent while staying true to the roots of their instrumental project.

T

here’s a poignant moment near the tail end of Dream Big: A Big Gigantic Story, a 20-minute documentary by the Colorado-based multimedia group Cinesthetics about the rise of Big Gigantic, where Dom Lalli is standing with his back to the camera, gazing over an uncharacteristically bleak mountain vista, recalling the days when he had convinced his folks (and somewhat obliquely, himself ), that a career in music was his life’s choice, and that was that. Full stop. Watch me sink, or watch me swim, but into the sea I’m goin’.

The scene is brief, and had it landed earlier in the documentary, it could have misfired as self-consciously melodramatic. But coming as it does after stage-perspective footage of Rowdytown — the razzle-dazzle of Big G’s frenetic and city-dimming high voltage stage production and the euphoric Red Rocks audience, the sellout crowd’s arms asway like a great anemone yielding to an electric tide — it delivers on the promise of a human side to success. Which springs, as it always does, from a kernel of ambition, irrigated by hard work and nurtured by a humble appreciation of the band’s transformation.

It reminded me of a piece I read a day or two before I caught Lalli and partner Jeremy Salken at home, chilling before a summer-closing festival gig the next day in St Louis. Why do pop stars — or for that matter, any artist at or near the top of their game — get anxiety?

As Big Gigantic celebrates their fifth Rowdytown gig, Lalli concedes that the band’s success still does give him a little case of the shakes sometimes.

“Definitely,” he laughs, along with Salken. “This is just branching out from a place where I was playing jazz Wednesday nights at Dazzle for 25 people.”

And things have changed in five years; social media has grown into a critical if complicated part of the music biz.

“Which, back in the day, we kind of didn’t really have much of that,” Lalli says. “But all the banter and talk on social media adds pressure, sure. It’s there. And pressure can lead to anxiety. But ... we’re always up for a challenge.”

In the face of live performance success, of course, the inclination for a franchise is usually to find and hire people who are comfortable with big numbers — detail herders.

Business types. We’ve heard it a million times; let the music biz guys handle the details, we want to concentrate on music.

“We kind of run it like a mom and pop show,” Salken says. “Even though it’s grown to the size that it has, it’s still me and Dom and our manager. And we’re all involved in so many facets of what’s going on with Big Gigantic.

And I think we like doing it ourselves.”

“We’re all control freaks,” Lalli adds.

“It’s cool that we can kinda control our own destiny,” Salken says. “It’s very satisfying: ‘We did that shit. No matter what happens, we did that shit.’”

Big G hosts Rowdytown V a mere month after the release of their latest full album, Brighter Future, which dropped in August. Brimming with Lalli’s busy and meticulous production, laced and punctuated by his instinctual horn lines, the record is (paradoxically, by design) a vocalist’s tour de force, spearheaded by the anthemic “The Little Things” crooned bravely by the indomitable Angela McCluskey.

Elsewhere, Natalie Cressman’s turn on the poised, bouncing confection of “No Apologies” contrasts with Waka Flocka Flame’s testimony on “Highly Possible” and Pell’s turn on the future-soul of “Miss Primetime.”

Lalli demonstrates an utter fearlessness in merging his pop, soul, hip hop and funk instincts freely throughout the proceedings, dissolving disciplines into each other, co-existing with his guest vocalists (and there are lots on this record) in a colored shower of sound, texture and cadence.

In some ways, it seems that Big G’s personality, on this offering, belongs to the vocalists. As a historically instrumental project, it’s easy to wonder how Big Gigantic retains their identity on an album where singers paint and shade and project the songs.

“It sort of starts with me making the tunes first,” Lalli explains, “which is what helps keep it sounding like us. For this record, it was a cool way to keep our sound ... we’ve never really done much with many vocalists, or it’s been a remix.

Same with the rap stuff. But I think this is where we’ve been pointing, where our sound has been going. I just kind of feel like this is what’s always meant to be.

We were just lucky to get all these super talented people to help us out.”

Some may adhere the electronic dance music (EDM) tag to Big G’s music, a genre that highbrow critics at in-the-know publications like Pitchfork have mused is dying.

But it’s a burgeoning musical scene, a community, an aesthetic with few rules, easy access to technology, a growing festival and sympathetic club embrace.

“I think every new and powerful form of music has the same sort of trajectory,” Lalli says. “[It] comes in super fuckin’ hot, everyone is dying for it ... I mean, like, talk about Elvis. [It] comes in super big, and then it settles into the popular culture. And electronic music, the creative end of it, is so open-ended, and that’s what’s so exciting about it. But I think it’s the first initial hit that came

in ... I mean, we’ve been doing this now for eight, 10 years.

“So it’s not like the bubble has burst or anything like that,” Lalli adds. “It’s gone the same way as every other great genre. Like hip-hop or rock ‘n’ roll.”

As for Rowdytown V, Salken can’t help but express some little-kid-glee about the gig.

“It will be rowdier than ever,” he laughs.

“Seriously, we’ve got the new album

and a bunch of new music, we have some guests coming out. A new light rig ... a bunch of shiny new toys for the kids. We’re super, super psyched for it.”

And any plans for next year, or too soon to worry about it?

“No, not too early,” Lalli says. “We have a bunch of festivals lined up, and we’ll be working the new album a lot.

“Gotta get out there and spread the love.”

n these bleak times, it seems impossible to go a day without another shooting. Choreographer Robert Sher-Machherndl is fed up and wants to awaken the desensitized.

“It shouldn’t become, ‘Oh, it happened again,’ OK, ‘Oh, it happened again,’ OK,” he says. “I want to put awareness on people to really think what it means to take a life. It’s a huge deal taking one life. We shouldn’t be [like] when it’s one life we don’t look anymore, or it has to be 80 lives or 200 lives, then we look. No, every life counts.”

So the choreographer uses dance as the language to explore these topics.

“You can stir a lot of emotions with people,” he says. “Through movement, White Fields will be a duet with choreographer Robert Sher-Machherndl and Bailey Harper. when they see it, they can experience it.”

Sher-Machherndl is raising awareness about gun violence in his new production, White Fields, with local dance company Lemon Sponge Cake Contemporary Ballet, on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Holiday Park in Boulder.

Off the beaten track

Executive Director Pablo Kjolseth is still at the helm of the IFS. His dedication to the festival is evidenced by the fact he has been attending since he was in junior high school.

He has now run the program for almost 20 years in his effort to get people interested in the art of film.

“The idea here is to show people that there are still quality films that are being made that don’t come from a place of marketing or branding,” Kjolseth says.

He continues to bring in films from all over the world, from contemporary films to classics, and includes films in the program that he believes will be interesting, relevant and culturally important.

“It’s not programmed by committee, it’s not programmed the usual way, which is to say by the bottom line. It’s programmed from a place of serving the community, and sort of a place of passion, and wanting to bring things that are off the beaten track,” he says.

Of this year’s programming, Kjolseth specifically mentions Under the Sun, a documentary about the hardships families face in North Korea, which will be shown on Sept. 16,

The International Film Series Celebrates 75 Years

elebrating its 75th anniversary this season, the International Film Series (IFS) is ready to shake things up with changes to its regularly scheduled programming.

Casting aside the usual week-by-week calendar, the new program will operate on a show-by-show basis, focusing more on each feature individually. This allows room for long-running programs such as “Celebrating Stan,” a series which will screen and then discuss the many films of Stan Brakhage on select Sundays in room 100 on campus in the Atlas building. In addition, “First Person Cinema,” a smaller, more focused look at artistic cinema will be screened on select Mondays in the Visual Arts Center, room 1B20.

The Flatirons Food Film Festival will also be returning to the IFS and will take over the screenings from Oct. 20 to Oct. 23.

and like most of the films shown at IFS, will be playing in the Muenzinger Auditorium.

Other notable features are Ludlow, a documentary following Greek immigrants forced to take up arms by deplorable working conditions in coal mines, showing on Sept. 20, and Homo Sapiens, a film depicting locations abandoned by humanity, and what happens to them as a result, which screens Oct. 28.

Restoration fans, don’t fret. IFS will once again feature a selection of restored films including Time Bandits (1981), a film about a boy who joins a band of time-travelling, treasure stealing dwarves. The film is showing Sept.

24 and will include a pinkish tinted before restoration segment so everyone can understand importance of restoration. There will also be a restored version of On the Silver Globe (1988) screening Oct. 18.

Another addition to IFS is “C.U. at the Movies.” For the series, faculty members from departments around the Boulder campus will both select and introduce films.

On Sept. 13, The Center for Asian Studies will present Last Life in the Universe, a love story that takes place in contemporary Thailand followed by Cinema Kabuki: Sagi Musume, a look at Japan’s traditional theatre on Sept. 14.

After viewing these films, Danielle Rocheleau Salaz, executive director of the center, says she hopes that students become both interested and intrigued to learn more about the cultures in these films.

She believes the films will show people that Asia is not as exotic and

far-away as one might think, especially in a world that is so globalized and interconnected. And she hopes that the movie will bring people who are completely unaware of Asian culture to the IFS. “In particular, I do want to try and emphasize that this is something that you don’t have to know a lot about it and you’re still going to get something out of it,” Rocheleau Salaz says.

Also a part of this season is Geoff Marslett, an assistant professor in the film studies department. Marslett will be discussing Porches and Private Eyes, where he’ll be talking about filmmaking independent of Hollywood.

Marslett will also cover Tower, a documentary focusing on the University of Texas shooting that occurred in August of 1966. The film weaves interviews from people who were students at the time of the shooting with re-enactments and animation to add to the impact of their accounts.

“I think [Tower] helps take a historical moment and make you really get emotionally engaged and realize how scary and how terrible this event really was,” Marslett says.

As usual, viewers can expect quality film and intelligent discussion when attending any screening at this season’s IFS. While some things may have changed at the Festival this year, the magic of movies stays the same.

Perspectiva 2016 is a set of three candidate forums in Boulder County, hosted by the Latino Task Force of Boulder County and the League of Women Voters Boulder County. Coming to Boulder as a Chautauqua Visiting Scholar is Edith Mayo, the curator emeritus in political history at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History (NMAH). Mayo has been working at the forefront of women’s history for over 40 years. In her time there, she’s curated exhibits about voting, civil rights and the evolving constitutional process. The first few years she wore them I didn’t even notice the leather’s soft tan, and the buckskin laces roughly looped.

By the time I paid attention, her feet had already curved the shoes inward, weather had toughened the soft leather, and one lace had broken short.

Then I asked where she got those shoes and she said from the Indian store down in Mountain View.

Some other time, another year, I asked the name of the Indian store that sold handmade shoes like hers, but she said it went out of business and no store sold mocs with vodka splatters and Yosemite dirt ground in with a little tamale pie, so I couldn’t buy shoes like hers anyway.

Eastwood’s latest is a yawn

S

ully combines the thrill of events you already know work out okay with the pulse-pounding excitement of multiple computer simulations of airplanes landing. Complete with director Clint Eastwood’s overt personal bias against government bureaucracy and a main character defined by a complete lack of extreme emotions, the film is without conflict or purpose. The dramatic climax features a man comfortably seated, speaking softly, whose words are met with polite murmurs. Sully is the cinematic equivalent of a mediocre nap.

The titular character, the stoic and unflappable Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, is played by Tom Hanks, who is running here on likeability autopilot.

We know the events: Shortly after takeoff in January of 2009, flight 1549 lost both engines due to bird strikes and landed safely in the Hudson. Note that word “safely.” That How do you take an incident that lasted only 208 seconds and means the entirety make a full-length movie about it? Answer: Not well. of Sully is basically the chilling tale of a travel delay... Not to take anything away from the significance of the real event, but there’s a reason we don’t see The Car Accident I Narrowly Avoided: The Movie.

The chronology of the film is spaghetti-ed in order to try and build some semblance of rising tension. Sully awakes from a fitful dream in which he made the wrong call, headed back to LaGuardia and crashed into buildings in New York City. If you want to know how much progress we’ve made since 9/11, we’ve gone from hypersensitivity about even mentioning it to “screw it, let’s CGI a plane fireballing into a skyscraper.”

The bulk of the film is dedicated to the National Transportation Safety Board’s investigation into the incident. Sully and his copilot, the impressively mustachioed Jeff Skiles (Aaron Eckhart), defend their choices to bean-counting pencil pushers made to look like dicks despite the fact they did exactly what they were supposed to do.

This is the type of movie where people say things like “You’re a hero Sully Sullenberger,” and he responds “I was just doing my job.” This happens a lot.

Maybe five or 10 times. He has a nightmare with Katie Couric in it, if you’re into that sort of thing. Um, let’s see... Sully’s wife (Laura Linney) cries on the phone often, sometimes about money trouble, which is weird because pilots make a healthy salary. Uh, Sully jogs a lot... Like, he stress jogs at night and in the morning. It’s not a run or anything, but it’s a little more urgent than a power walk. Oh, and there are four computer simulations of planes landing. And you get to not only watch the simulations but also watch people watching the simulations. If you’re into that sort of thing.

Sully is a movie that has no need to exist about an event that was significant but not worth reenacting. There’s no doubt the real Sully is a good dude who did a good thing. There’s also no doubt that good dudes doing good things don’t always make for good movies.

ot all Saturdays are meant for carousing in your finest dancing pants. No, some Saturdays are meant for daylong home improvement projects in your foulest sweating pants.

If you’re lucky, you live within walking distance to Tiffins India Cafe, where the curry and mango lassis flow and no one will judge your flannel pants and grimy tank top.

Tiffins needs no real build up. It’s good. We pretty much all know it’s good because it’s been around since 2011, and we here at Boulder Weekly have said it’s good on more than one occasion during those five years.

My kingdom for a mango lassi

Tiffins started off serving up home-style vegetarian street food from southern India in a relatively sterile-looking environment — white walls and functional black seating. But over the years, the little Indian restaurant in The Village Shopping Center on Arapahoe Avenue underwent a makeover that warmed the space with vermillion hues and shifted its menu to include meat and the more familiar — at least to Westerns — northern Indian cuisine, notable for its heavier, creamier consistency.

Despite the facelift, Tiffins remains a humble eatery in the best sense of the term. There is no pretense at Tiffins. Warm colors and stimulating aromas make the space plenty inviting without dipping into the over-the-top opulence of many

Indian restaurants. There are no tapestries hanging from the walls, no Moroccan pendants from the ceiling, no hand-carved rosewood screens separating the dining room from the kitchen.

The mango lassi seems to embody the laid-back ethos of Tiffins, served in plastic cups that are available to snag from the cooler at the cash register. They are delicious and unpretentious.

Lassis are Indian yogurt-based drinks, sometimes sweet, sometimes savory, depending on the region.

Sweet lassis — like the mango lassi at Tiffins — are a specialty of the Gujarat region where Tiffins owner, Justin Patel, is from.

Gujarati food is primarily vegetarian, and often noted as being the healthiest of all Indian cuisine.

Remind yourself of this as you pull sweet, thick lassi through a straw.

There’s nothing to a lassi, really, just yogurt, a touch of milk, fruit, sugar or honey, and perhaps a bit of cardamom. They are, for all intents and purposes, really thick smoothies.

While Indians often take lassi with their lunch, a Western palette may find the richness of a mango lassi from Tiffins better suited to a dessert than as a beverage accompanying a meal.

That being said, a cool, sweet lassi provides a mighty fine extinguisher to the mouth fire one of Tiffins’ curries can ignite.

And as far as I can tell, lassis are great any time of year, and maybe even better when the weather

gets cooler. Their moderately cool temperature and amped-up sweetness are perfect for fall weather and a heartier cold-weather diet.

So, while being within walking distance to Tiffins isn’t totally crucial to the plan, it will help you build up a small calorie deficit to accommodate one of their mango lassis.

Snead shares his Boulder location with Bougie Syrups, a startup making flavored bartenders’ syrups including lime and ginger lightly sweetened with Colorado honey.

Raised on ethnic food and punk rock in the Washington, D.C. suburbs, Snead had no inkling he would end up crafting artisan bitters. We met to talk about his bitters path over Ozo coffee at the Walnut Café.

Q: How did you develop your sense of taste?

A: I had a strong bond with my mother over cooking as a very young child. She gave me the set of Time-Life Foods of the World cookbooks when I was 12 and we cooked our way through them, things like Peking duck. I’ve always paid close attention to how things taste.

Q: How did you end up in Boulder?

A: As a 16 year old I did get deeply into rock climbing. I moved to Boulder in 1976 to get a masters in computer science from CU. I started getting deeply into wine when I worked at the Boulder Wine Merchant. It takes time to learn and taste everything, to train your palate, so it was ideal. I worked at local tech companies while consulting

on wine web sites.

Q: What is the first cocktail you remember?

A: Like so many of us Baby Boomers, I rebelled against cocktails because my parents drank them. My parents liked the classic afternoon gin and tonic. I started with wine. Somewhere along the line I started getting into cocktails.

I liked the complexity of mixed drinks and took it seriously.

Q: How did you end up making bitters at home?

A: There’s an old bartender’s trick of adding a little juice from dark cherries along with the bitters to make a Manhattan. I thought: Why not just make cherry bitters? So I started making them for myself. Then my friends asked for a few bottles to give as gifts.

I took it to Bryan Dayton at OAK [at fourteenth], Allison Anderson at Frasca and other bartender friends and they loved it. With their encouragement, Cocktail Punk was born.

Q: What’s with the company name?

Longmont’s ode to the lager

I

f I told you that I love lagers, you might think ON TAP: Wibby I’m talking about that yellow fizzy stuff that Brewing. 209 Emery St., comes out of giant factories in St. Louis, Longmont, 303-776Missouri or down in Golden, Colorado. Not 4594. that I would ever knock them or their products — some of my closest friends gulp it down by the bucket — but those mass market lagers have turned suspicious craft drinkers against an otherwise sturdy and reliable beverage. There is simple elegance in a glass of finely crafted lager, and if you need further proof, head out to Longmont and give Wibby Brewing its due.

Located just two blocks from Downtown Longmont, and recently celebrating its paper anniversary, Wibby Brewing is a giant stack of concrete and stainless steel, an austere Susan France space that immediately warms when the sunshine streams through large roll-up doors.

The train tracks aren’t far, and there is a definite industrial feel, but the décor fits what’s in the glass.

There is a sense that everything has been thought through, and what matters here is function not flash.

Wibby’s beers, crafted by brewWibby Brewing’s bartender, Shane Sauer master Ryan Wibby, are produced using traditional German brewing methods, but aren’t beholden to the same Germany Purity Law enforced in Deutschland. This allows Wibby to put a signature spin on its beers, and the results are memorable. The Lightshine Helles (5.5% ABV) has that familiar yellow color and just the right amount of alcohol and bite — neither lacking nor overpowering. A glass of Lightshine will disappear fast, allowing you to move on to Moondoor Dunkle (5.5%), a velvety chocolate delivery, and Wibby IPL (7%), IPA’s smooth older brother with pungent citrus and a subdued bite. All three are Wibby’s workhorses and all three contain a tameness that is positively charming.

There is a little more adventure in the seasonal selection, from the Lightshine Raddler, a helles with raspberry lemonade — how unfortunate that I discovered summertime heaven after Labor Day — to Wibtoberfest (5.36%), a warm märzen with a nice amber color and a little more wheat. For those looking for a touch of punch with sweetness to follow, Ted IPL (10%) is a double of the Wibby IPL and named after the company’s main man. Downtown Hop (7.25%) is a hoppy helles bock that is surprisingly smooth. But none of them can hold a candle to the No Dos Vienna Lager (5.5%). With its lovely shade of cola, No Dos Vienna Lager is malt forward, slightly hopped and absolutely delicious.

According to the Beer Drinker’s Guide to Colorado, brewmaster Ryan Wibby studied his craft in Germany for nearly a year and the results show. Thanks to a leisurely cold fermentation process, Wibby produces mellow beers that offer much without bludgeoning the drinker into submission. IPAs and Pale Ales certainly have their champions, but not every beer needs to be a wallop of hops and alcohol.

Is the DEA moving toward real change, or is it just hot air?

W

hen the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced on August 11 that they would not reschedule marijuana, which would have been an acknowledgement of its medical benefits, they also announced a separate policy change that would increase the number of federally registered marijuana manufacturers in order to foster more “scientifically meritorious” research.

Many marijuana advocates took this as a sign of progress. For decades, the DEA has promoted a monopoly on researchgrade marijuana for use Wikimedia Commons in federally-approved studies. There are over 350 registered research projects and all of them receive their marijuana from the University of Mississippi.

The DEA’s rationale for the severe restriction on supply owes to federal obligations to uphold both international treaty and the United States’ own law, the Controlled Substances Act, both of which severely restrict access to marijuana.

But with only one source of research grade marijuana, it is effectively impossible for scientists to put it through clinical trials that could confirm or deny its current classification, relegating cannabis to a sort of purgatory in between demonization and legalization.

Under the monopoly, there have been many concerns with the quality of the marijuana supply, including a lack of diversity of strains and potency, a lack of meaningful cannabinoid profiles and inconsistent samples, all of which call the integrity of the research into question.

“Obviously there is tons of other research out there, but if the marijuana they are using isn’t from the

University of Mississippi, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) won’t recognize it as valid because of the DEA’s restrictions,” says Michael Collins of the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA), a drug policy reform nonprofit in New York. “It’s a vicious cycle.”

But even Collins recognizes the increase in federally registered research manufacturers as a significant step for the DEA — at least a recognition of 40 years of circular logic, if not a more meaningful sign of progress.

Collins applauds the change as a big step forward in interdepartmental collaboration. For the first time in a decades-long stalemate, the DEA is working with the National Institute on Drug Use to redetermine the legitimacy of marijuana as medicine in the eyes of the FDA. In Colorado, considerably more progress is being made. Two years ago the state legislature seized the opportunity to generate research that could provide scientific evidence of cannabis’s medical benefits, if not at the federal level, then at least in the eyes of the state, which has had a medical market for 16 years.

With an unexpected surplus in revenue collected from medical marijuana patient registration fees, state officials funded the Medical Marijuana Research Grant Program (MMRGP) that currently supports nine research projects, three of which purchase and administer marijuana from the University of Mississippi with strict oversight from the DEA. MMRGP manager Ken Gershman of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment says Colorado’s program will not be affected by the DEA’s recent decision and expressed

skepticism it would have much of an affect at all.

“For now it is just a piece of paper with a new policy on it and how or when it will be operationalized is yet to be seen,” he says. “The DEA being the DEA, they are not in a hurry to do anything, so I wouldn’t say they they have changed sides just yet. There is a lot to be seen about how much of this is good faith and how much is real effort.”

Gershman points out that the requirements to qualify for a DEA permit are onerous, both fiscally and operationally, and adds that any applicant that has previously been out of compliance with federal law is not eligible to apply. This means that potential applicants would be starting from scratch, both in terms of know-how and property and equipment.

“The timeline could be ridiculously long here,” Gershman says. “So is this progress? To be seen. To be determined.”

The DEA has yet to recieve a single application since it opened for submissions. In the meantime the realities of marijuana research remain relatively unchanged, frustrating many clinical researchers working with cannabis in the U.S. University of Colorado professor Nolan Kane, who led the Cannabis Genomic Research Initiative, one of the deepest scientific explorations of the cannabis genome ever performed, has difficulty seeing progress.

“Depending on the details, it may be that there are in reality just as many barriers to research as there were previously,” he writes in an email. “It may be that these supposed changes are really not any different than how things were previously ... It is not clear to me that this decision will affect our ability to work with any of the material that people outside of the university are using.

While it’s possible the DEA is changing and seeking to create an opportunity for more and better research on marijuana, it is also possible that this is nothing more than a waving of the hand designed to distract the public from the underlying stalemate.

he latest polls on marijuana legalization are in, and they contain a lot of good news.

In California, two polls show Proposition 64 passing, one of them with very strong support. A poll taken for the Los Angeles Times found that 58 percent of those surveyed favored passage of the proposition with only 34 percent opposed.

The poll, which was conducted September 1 to 8, surveyed 1,879 adults and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

The poll found the strongest support for the measure was among the young; 67 percent of voters aged 18 to 24 supported it. As usual, the lowest level of support was among Californians 65 years of age and older. However, even among this group the poll found 50 percent in favor of legalization. In past California polls, voters over the age 65 usually mustered no more than about 35 percent support for legalization.

The only group that was decisively against legalization in the poll was Republicans. Fifty-six percent of them opposed marijuana legalization.

A second California poll also showed Proposition 64 passing but with less support and more opposition. The poll, which was conducted

by Survey USA for the Southern California News Group and KABC/Eyewitness News found 52 percent of those surveyed in favor of Prop 64 versus 40 percent opposed.

Both surveys found 8 percent of the voters were undecided on the issue.

The Los Angeles Times poll also found that 11 percent of Californians had used marijuana in the last 30 days, roughly in line with what national

ly volatile electorate when it comes to legalizing pot. Still, since controversial ballot proposals tend to lose support as Election Day approaches, supporters of the initiative should be encouraged by the fact that the more recent poll suggests they’re gaining ground instead of losing it.

In Massachusetts, support for legalization also seems to have turned around after losing ground over the summer in the face of a well-organized assault led by Governor Charlie Baker. A statewide poll taken for NPR station WBUR between Sept. 7 and Sept.

10 found voters favored the state’s legalization initiative 50 percent to 45 percent.

As was the case in Arizona, the results represented a dramatic turnaround from a poll taken by a different polling company in July, which found legalization losing by a 41 to 51 percent margin.

Last April, before Baker led the charge against the initiative, support for legalization stood at 57 percent in favor. The latest results indicate that the pro-legalization side is at the very least holding its own in the fight.

All three legalization initiatives are roughly patterned after Colorado’s Amendment 64, which passed in 2012 with 55 percent of the vote.

Finally, in Florida, an initiative to amend the state constitution to legalize medical marijuana has 70 percent support, according to a poll conducted

by Public Policy Polling, with only 23 percent opposed. The initiative needs 60 percent support to pass, since it is a constitutional amendment.

None of these measures are guaranteed passage, but taken together the latest polling results indicate that this year’s campaign in the war to end the war on pot has opened well.

Marijuana legalization: Good news in the latest polls polls have been finding lately.

A new poll conducted for the Arizona Republic found that the state’s legalization initiative was supported by 50 percent of the voters versus 40 percent against and 10 percent undecided. The results are particularly good news, because a poll taken last summer by a different polling company found the initiative losing by a 39.1 percent to 52.5 percent margin. The earlier poll was released on July 11. The new poll was taken between August 17 and August 31 and has a margin of sampling error of 3.4 percent.

In an attempt to get the presidential candidates to talk about something, you know, worthwhile, Scientific American partnered with ScienceDebate.org to develop 20 questions for the candidates to answer about science, engineering, technology, health and environmental issues. Scientific American published answers from Hillary, The Donald and Jill Stein on Sept. 13. (Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson has yet to answer; his staff says he’s still researching what Aleppo is. He’s narrowed it down to a city in Syria or a mosquito-borne disease. Or maybe an allergy medication.)

The answers are unsurprisingly unsurprising, with Hillary reiterating her platform to move half of all U.S. electricity generation to “clean” sources within 10 years and cutting oil consumption by a third over the same time frame. Beyond solar panels, Hillz is silent on what she considers “clean” energy sources (we’re betting she thinks natural gas is a “bridge fuel”). Jill Stein was more direct in her words, calling climate change “the greatest existential threat that humanity has ever faced.” Stein proposed a New Green Deal (“a WWII-scale national mobilization to halt climate change”) that would redirect research funds from fossil fuels into renewable energy and ensure workers displaced by the shift away from fossil fuels would receive full income and benefits as they transition to alternative work.

While Hillary and Jill gave multi-paragraphs answers to each question, The Donald kept it short, averaging answers that were about a third of what his fellow candidates said. His response to climate change could be described as interesting, but more appropriately as ambiguous: “There is still much that needs to be investigated in the field of ‘climate change.’ Perhaps the best use of our limited financial resources should be in dealing with making sure that every person in the world has clean water. Perhaps we should focus on eliminating lingering diseases around the world like malaria.

Perhaps we should focus on efforts to increase food production to keep pace with an ever-growing world population. Perhaps we should be focused on developing energy sources and power production that alleviates the need for dependence on fossil fuels. We must decide on how best to proceed so that we can make lives better, safer and more prosperous.”

Clean water, malaria and food security will all be affected by climate change, according to several peer-reviewed studies, some of which were conducted by the U.S.’ own Environmental Protection Agency. But we’d hate to trouble Donald with anything as irritating as hard facts.
