Skiing and snowboarding are just an hour away (unless traffic in Boulder Canyon is bad), the state capitol is a mere 40-minute drive down US 36 (unless traffic is bad), and Rocky Mountain National Park is just an hour away (unless traffic is... you get the point, traffic can be an issue in these parts).

If you look around town hard enough, you’ll encounter plenty of those folks who have famously made Boulder delightfully weird. You’ll also meet a few people who make Boulder not-so-delightfully weird and that’s alright too. It takes all types, doesn’t it?

oulder is made up of born-and-raised Coloradans, older folks who were here when the moniker “People’s Republic of Boulder” was first hung on the town and a whole lot of transplants that came for any number of reasons. Some fell in love — with a person, with the mountains, or both — and never left. Others moved in a month ago for a tech job and for others it’s all about the outdoor activities. It’s a college town. And, at the same time, a family town, a retirement area and a tourist destination.

If you really want to get a feel for Boulder today, there’s no better way than hitting some coffee shops and having a few conversations.

The Laughing Goat and Ozo Coffee Company in downtown are great places to start. They brim with book-readers, headphone-wearers, texters and talkers.

“I’m a coffee nut. This was my sanctuary, my home away from home,” says Jimmy Foley, sipping his afternoon coffee at The Laughing Goat and reminiscing about when he first moved to Boulder.

Born in New Jersey, Foley found himself living in Florida with his mother in the 1990s. He was hoping for a job, but it never panned out. So, he looked to Colorado.

“I had a friend living in Boulder, and one in Denver,” Foley says. “They offered me a place to stay while I looked for a job.

“I said, ‘I’ll give it a year, if I like it I’ll stay’ — that was 25 years ago,” he says with a laugh, adding, “but I can’t get rid of the Jersey accent.”

Foley stayed for the people, and for the nature. According to his theory, they are dependent on each other.

“I’ve seen lots of people come here and say, ‘It’s beautiful, I want to move here,’” Foley says, including himself in this category. But then the reality sets in that you have to work and pay bills and take care of your family. “And then I think you can forget about the beauty even though it’s right in your face.”

That’s where Foley says the people come in: “I think there are many groups that help you come around to look at those things again — if

you forget where you are.”

And where did he find these people to help him remember? Coffeeshops.

That’s where the majority of Foley’s friendships emerged. He would sit and pay his bills, or read a newspaper. Even write cards. And he would just start talking to people.

“I’m a really shy person, but I seem to open up more in Boulder,” he says.

“People — that’s really what makes Boulder, not all the other stuff.”

“I think the Boulder Bubble is just kinda heaven on Earth,” says Mike Watkins, enjoying coffee and a bagel at Ozo Coffee. “I am out and about a lot, I travel a lot. I’m very proud of Boulder. I think it’s a great place to be from.”

Before moving to Boulder in 1998 with his wife, Watkins moved around a lot.

“I’m a Floridian. I’m an Army brat, went to high school in Atlanta, college in upstate New York.”

When he first landed in Boulder, Watkins didn’t think he would stay. “I thought I was going to [leave], but my wife and girls really liked this area.”

Watkins stayed and his daughters attended high school in Boulder. Both are grown — one is an astronaut — and Watkins and his wife still call the area home.

LOCALS ONLY from PAGE 9 “My wife really likes the weather,” he adds, “I like the business climate ... We have the university, we have startups, we have people who are trust fund babies.”

Watkin muses that “the wealth creates a climate that’s like a bubble.”

“We are notorious for being this bubble,” he says, adding, “notorious in a good way.”

Teagan Walker, a barista at The Laughing Goat, acknowledges the complexities within the notorious bubble.

“There’s the total hippie-spiritual-happiness crowd, the super wealthy business crowd, and then there’s the old people who have lived here before it was even a town... In a way you get a lot of everything, but it’s also pretty similar.

“It’s not the place I would have chosen to grow up if it was up to me,” Walker says, “but it’s beautiful here, and there are beautiful people.”

Walker moved to Boulder from Illinois when she was 7 years old.

“This is my hometown,” she says. “I went away to a semester of college in Seattle” and then she came back.

“Right now I’m home for a gap year.”

Walker identifies as a local and then tries to define the term, saying, “I think a local is like someone who has lived in Boulder for at least a few years — they’re a part of the community, they know the scene.

“They know what Boulder’s all about,” she says, laughing — “it’s not like most places.”

“For a lot of people, local might mean that you come from that place — but not me,” Will Hollyer says over coffee at Ozo with close friend Jake Milstein.

The two are originally from New York and Milstein is currently visiting from Salt Lake City, Utah.

Hollyer just finished his undergrad degree and is spending his summer working and adventuring. “For people like me who only want to ski and climb and be outside, it’s awesome,” he explains.

Milstein agrees. “I’ve been coming back every couple months. I flew in three days ago, and I’m going to be here for like a month.” They laugh as they try to recall the number of times Milstein has visited.

“How many times — you think like seven or eight?”

Hollyer asks.

“I’ve probably spent, like, two months visiting,” Milstein says.

For Milstein, Boulder is “freedom from time and a lot of different societal pressures.” And though he’s spent large swaths of time here, Milstein doesn’t consider himself a local.

“The only place I really consider myself to know the area would be two places — Salt Lake [City] and Snowbird [Utah Ski Resort].”

Hollyer, however, feels like a local. To him, being a local means “you know the people and places of a general region.”

Though he completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Colorado Boulder, Hollyer says it wasn’t the school that originally brought him.

“The mountains,” he says, “and everything that comes with that.

“Boulder to me is... it’s like the holy land — the expensive holy land.”

A story with every pour

You

can claim the mountains, the schools, the jobs and the outdoors as your excuse, but we all know it was beer that brought you here.

You’re not alone: Boulder is home to over 20 breweries, magnets all.

And most of them started by homebrewers and beer geeks who migrated to Boulder to stake their claim in the malt and hops arena. Economists call it a “cluster,” and C+R Research lists Boulder as the fourth-highest concentration of breweries per 50,000 residents. Only Bend, Oregon; Asheville, North Carolina; and Portland, Maine, have more, and that’s just because they have fewer residents.

But Boulder is not just about concentration, it’s also ground zero for the U.S. craft beer revolution. Colorado’s first and oldest craft brewery, Boulder Beer Company, still calls the city home. As does the Brewers Association (BA), the trade group that represents America’s independent brewers — their offices are located downtown at Spruce and 14th streets. Yes, they have a bar at the BA, but alas, it’s only for the employees.

But never fear, there’s no end of drinking opportunities for you downtown. Or uptown, north, south, east or west for that matter. Brewery-hopping in Boulder isn’t just another way to wet your whistle; it’s how you can experience the history of the city.

STOP ONE: BOULDER BEER COMPANY — Colorado’s first craft brewery was the product of two CU professors/ homebrewers in the late 1970s. Back then, there wasn’t an industry for obtaining brewery equipment, so David Hummer and Randolph “Stick” Ware had to invent everything as they went along. Their first facility was located on a goat farm in Hygiene — about 13 miles north of Boulder — owned by a fellow CU-Boulder engineer, Alvin Nelson. In 1983/84, they built a proper facility on Wilderness Place and have been there ever since. The tasting room doubles as a restaurant, and they offer tours daily. Stop by for a bite and quaff a pint of Buffalo Gold, their iconic and time tested golden ale, the [unofficial] beer of the CU Buffs. Just make sure you leave room for their best seller: Shake Porter, a chocolatey beer that is best served on nitro.

STOP TWO: MOUNTAIN SUN PUB & BREWERY — Kevin Daly didn’t want to become a lawyer. It was as simple as that. So, he opened a brewpub instead. And for over 25 years, Mountain Sun has been a staple in the Boulder scene, particularly every February when the dark ale flows for Stout Month. Visit the O.G. facility on Pearl Street — the seven-barrel brewhouse you see on your way to the bathroom is the same one they started with back in 1993 — but be prepared to wait for a table. Also, bring cash: Mountain Sun doesn’t take credit cards. None of the Suns do, including the two other Boulder locations, Southern Sun (opened in 2002; try the hot wings) and Under the Sun (opened 2013; they have a wood-fired pizza oven). Waits double and triple in February, but they’ll often bring you taster glasses of stouts and baskets of fries to occupy you. It’s no wonder why people who’ve left Boulder often make time for the Sun when they return.

STOP FIVE: ADAMANT BREWING — Despite the history and ubiquity of beer, Boulder is far from a factory town. There’s plenty of room for start-ups to try something different, so Adam Kandel of Adamant Brewing & Blending is charting new territory. No stranger to the scene, Kandle opened Boulder Fermentation Supply, a homebrew shop, with partner Greg Kallfa in 2013. Their next-door brewery, Vision Quest Brewing Company, followed in 2015. And now with Adamant, Kandle has another playground, this one focusing on funky, sour wheat ales that are barrel-fermented, aged and then re-fermented and conditioned in the can.

Even after 40 years, the Boulder scene is still growing, evolving and experimenting. Cheers to 40 more.

STOP THREE: AVERY BREWING CO. — Now located in Boulder-adjacent Gunbarrel, Avery Brewing grew up in a back alley along Arapahoe Avenue. It was there Adam Avery unveiled Hog Heaven, a big, beastly red ale loaded with piney hops. As the story goes, Avery’s father tried the beer and proclaimed that it would sell when pigs fly.

It sold, and Avery followed Hog with a whole line of “big beers:” double IPAs, imperial stouts and barrel-aged brews.

Additionally, Avery brews Stampede — the official gold lager of CU Athletics — and Ales of Antiquities — a historical brewing project headed up by CU-Boulder professor Travis Rupp.

Recreating recipes from ancient Greece, Rome, China and South America, Ales of Antiquities is the chance to try beers unlike anything else out there.

STOP FOUR: SANITAS BREWING COMPANY — According to the aforementioned C+R study, Sanitas Brewing is the most popular brewery searched for in Boulder. A quick trip to the taproom is enough to tell you why. The beers are delicious, the space inviting, and when the train rumbles by, a specific beer is discounted for the next 15 minutes. Even better, McDevitt Taco Supply has a resident food cart on the patio. t’s not easy being a vegetarian in a meat-eating world.

Thankfully, it’s a little easier to eat meat-free in Boulder County — there is no shortage of eateries here that cater to herbivores and omnivores alike. Some local eateries seek to mimic the taste and texture of a classic hamburger, while others serve patties that play up their veggie foundations. In any case, you won’t miss the meat. On the time Bill Monroe came to Boulder and fathered a bluegrass mecca

C

olorado brings to mind mountains, skiing and beer for many visitors and newcomers, but music should never be far off.

Ask banjo, mandolin or guitar pickers anywhere, and they know all about the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Rockygrass in Lyons and Boulder’s legendary Hot Rize. Many stream KGNU’s bluegrass show, Old Grass GNU Grass, on Saturday mornings.

And they know that members of the jam-grass royalty — including Leftover Salmon, String Cheese Incident and Yonder Mountain String Band — call Colorado home, and that their performances here are epic.

That’s pretty remarkable considering Colorado wasn’t exactly bluegrass heaven with a thriving community 50 years ago, nor was it a foregone conclusion that Appalachian-born acoustic music would take root in the Rockies the way it did in Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia.

True, string bands played around the state, the big AM stations programmed early country music and honky-tonks featured square dancing and Western Swing from Texas. But it wasn’t until the 1960s folk boom that bluegrass migrated West in a meaningful way.

In the Denver area, the folk and bluegrass scene was sparked and supported by legendary folkie Harry Tuft and the 20

Denver Folklore Center, which provided access to instruments and instruction. But, it’s thanks to Bill “The Father of Bluegrass Music” Monroe that one of the nation’s most highly respected bluegrass festivals ended up in our backyard. It came down to logistics.

ROCKYGRASS DNA COMES FROM BILL MONROE Touring bands of yore (and today) faced a long bus trip from the cities of the Midwest to the West Coast and looked for a landing spot to bridge the gap. The place where the highways met near Denver seemed appealing, especially to mandolinist and band leader Bill Monroe.

When Monroe played at former Boulder music hall Tulagi’s in 1972, he talked with members of the just-born Colorado Bluegrass Music Association and proposed bankrolling a festival headlined by his band, the Bluegrass Boys, for whom the music was named. Those Boulder shows led to the first annual Rocky Mountain Bluegrass Festival at the Adams County Fairgrounds less than a year later and featured a lineup that included guitarist Lester Flatt.

Tulagi’s had already figured in another seminal moment in bluegrass music history. The influential Will the Circle Be Unbroken album was basically birthed backstage when Flatt’s former partner, banjo legend Earl Scruggs, played I

there in 1971. The acoustic music-oriented Nitty Gritty Dirt Band dropped by, and that became the record that introduced the Baby Boomers to bluegrass.

“Baby Boomers were at their peak and arriving in Boulder and Denver. So many of us were moving here from all over the country. What we found here was a sense of community,” says Pete “Dr. Banjo” Wernick.

Along with Nick Forster (creator of eTown), former Boulderite Tim O’Brien and the late Charles Sawtelle, Wernick is a founding member of Grammynominated Hot Rize (and its alter-ego Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers).

Wernick was the founding president of the International Bluegrass Music Association and organized the nation’s first banjo camp.

Bluegrass Festival office was located in Boulder. In 1988, Lyons-based Planet Bluegrass purchased the Telluride Festival and in 1992 added Rockygrass and established the picturesque festival site in Lyons.

“I give a lot of credit to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and (founder) Fred Shellman for bringing all that talent to Colorado and making it work in a town

that’s really hard to get to,” Wernick says. He praises Planet Bluegrass for retaining the traditional bluegrass festival format at Rockygrass, which includes workshops and instrument and band competitions, as being among the first festivals dedicated to sustainability.

“The whole way bluegrass works as a subculture is very healthy. There are lots of families. There is very little

BS. The stars are never very far from the fans, who more often than not play instruments themselves,” Wernick says, noting you can find bluegrass jams every night of the week at local cafes, restaurants and brewpubs, including a legendary one at Oskar Blues Grill & Brew in Lyons.

TURN YOUR (PUBLIC) RADIO ON Public radio, in particular Boulder’s KGNU, played a pivotal evangelizing role in making the area bluegrassfriendly. The Boulder radio station has featured bluegrass and acoustic music throughout its programming, but especially on the Old Grass GNU Grass show. “You figure, Saturday morning after Saturday morning, week after week for 40 years, Old Grass GNU Grass has been introducing people to bluegrass,” Wernick says, noting that the DJs — including his wife, Joan — are experts in the genre.

The station is also a dependable spot where bluegrass musicians have a place to play live on the air. The station’s volunteers maintain a hotline that lists jams, gigs and festivals all over the state.

In the early ’70s, Wernick and his former band, Country Cooking, were booked at one of the first Rockygrass festivals in Lyons. “We were driving into Colorado and picked up KFML, a free-form AM station, and they played ‘Great Balls of Fire’

by New Grass Revival. I thought that this had to be the hippest place in the country,” Wernick says.

In 1974, Fred Shellman and members of the local Fall Creek Band organized the first Telluride Bluegrass Festival, booking the long-haired Sam Bush and New Grass Revival as the headliners. The event has become one of the most famous music festivals in the world. While Telluride never pretended to be a strict bluegrass festival, it has showcased the best bluegrass musicians of several generations to a notoriously open-eared audience.

HOW THE JAM GOT IN THE GRASS Bluegrass seems to fit Colorado because acoustic music was meant to be heard outdoors, preferably around a campfire. This sensibility matched up with the desire of Colorado mountain towns needing something to draw visitors in the summer.

“You can’t underestimate the power of the environment at these festivals. People get here and slowly they are introduced to the music and become fans,” says Brian Eyster, vice president of communications at Planet Bluegrass, who is also a musician and volunteer bluegrass DJ. Planet Bluegrass produces the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, two festivals onsite at Lyons, including August’s Folks Festival, plus spring and fall concerts in its Wildflower Pavilion.

Colorado is viewed as the birthplace of “jamgrass,” fusing bluegrass values with rock, jazz, folk and world music, as heard in bands like Leftover Salmon, String Cheese Incident and Yonder Mountain String Band. Their presence led to a new generation of harmonic immigrants.

“Three-fifths of the Infamous Stringdusters live in Colorado, a couple of members of Green Sky Bluegrass, and a lot of the musicians from Trout Steak Revival,” Eyster says.

Grammy-winning dobro player Sally Van Meter and Kacey Groves, a member of the groundbreaking Colorado-born all-female band Uncle Earl.

“There are more transplants than natives. Part of the reason they live in Colorado is that their music is welcomed. Here, they found their audience,” Eyster says.

They also found a different kind of festival.

“The Colorado bluegrass festivals are not like most of the festivals back east. Here they have always been open to other kinds of acoustic music, and [are] supportive of musicians pushing the boundaries,” Eyster says.

“Especially for the younger music fans — they don’t have these separate genres they follow. They like the bands that draw from a lot of influences. All that music is reflected here,” he says.

Another reason the Flatirons became a bluegrass backdrop has been the flurry of unofficial state anthems. “Colorado’s reputation also comes because musicians come here BOULDER WEEKLY

A few fun facts from Pearl Street’s past

It doesn’t matter if you’re visiting from Denver or Dushanbe, Tajikistan, a visit to Boulder isn’t complete without a stroll down the city’s centerpiece: Pearl Street. It’s only a few blocks long, but Pearl’s unique history is made up of hundreds of little-known stories. Here are but six.

1. APRIL 1859 Pearl Street gets its name. Boulder’s main thoroughfare appears named for the first time on a town plat. One month prior, 58 men signed the Articles of Organization of the Boulder City Town Company. Though rumors have suggested that the street was named after a minister’s mother, or the wife of one of the original town organizers, no one knows for certain who Pearl was — or if she ever came to Boulder.

2. 1886 Fonda’s Drug Store at 1235 Pearl St., becomes known as Boulder’s “debating center” because people often talked while standing in the doorway. The owner of the building, George F. Fonda, was a member of the championship Boulder Hose Company, which pulled a 1,175-pound cart and unreeled a 200foot hose in a record-breaking time of 34 and a half seconds. He also played the tuba in the Boulder Band. Now the building houses the Peppercorn kitchen supply store.

3. FEBRUARY 9, 1932 The Boulder County Courthouse catches fire. The fire began in the clock tower, and high winds quickly spread the flames, causing the roof to cave in. Although the courthouse’s foundation and walls were still standing after the fire, the 50-year-old building was torn down and replaced with today’s courthouse, an Art Deco-style building designed by Glen H. Huntington. Made of buff sandstone, the courthouse’s stepped-back design echoes the flat, angular storefronts that came into style in the 1930s, replacing the intricacies of the Victorian era. The courthouse reopened in 1934 — the same year that the Women’s Relief Corps dedicated a plaque at the front of the building featuring President Abraham Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address.” The plaque remains to this day.

4. AUGUST 6, 1977 Following a year of construction, the Downtown Boulder Mall opens. One month later, the City Council bans dogs, bicycling, skateboarding and tossing Frisbees on the mall. During construction between 11th and 15th streets, business owners complained of decreased sales and expressed their concerns about the lack of parking. Years later, businesses cited the mall as the reason they succeeded. After the opening of the mall, Richard Foy, co-chair of Communications Arts, Inc. stated that “Pearl Street, once Boulder’s commercial artery, has become its cultural heart and soul.”

5. OCTOBER 1989 An unorganized, spotaneous event, the Halloween Mall Crawl drew tens of thousands of costumed, rowdy locals and tourists alike. In 1989, Boulder police sent 87 officers to attempt to control the crowd, which swelled to over 40,000 people and resulted in upwards of 100 injuries, 37 arrests and $50,000 in property damages. The Mall Crawl was shut down permanently in 1991 and was, eventually, resurrected in 2009 in a much tamer form.

Boulder galleries try to compete against the allure of the outdoors

AS

a world-class hiking destination and a nexus for many tech start-up companies, Boulder is one of the most desirable places in the country to live. But while building the infrastructure to support its growing population and tourism numbers, the city may be overlooking one important cultural institution: the arts.

Boulder’s museums often appear under-visited. The NoBo Art District can look like a ghost town. There are many galleries scattered along Pearl Street, but burgeoning rent prices in the area can be prohibitive for most artists.

While Boulder is thriving in many areas, its arts scene appears to be struggling to find its identity among a sea of entrepreneurs and adventurers.

Serving Boulder County and the Denver Metro area since 1972, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA) has played a key role in Boulder’s arts culture since its inception. The museum brings international, contemporary art to Boulder while still providing a platform for up and coming, local artists.

As David Dadone, BMoCA’s executive director and chief curator, explains, “I think Boulder has a unique setting ... It’s a vibrant community of artists that really care about the community.”

Set against the backdrop of the Rockies, Dadone says that the arts community in Boulder was started by artists who wanted to experience a more holistic approach to art and life. Tiffany Mitchum, owner of the art gallery/event space

Rembrandt Yard, has a similar view of Boulder’s artists.

“A lot of artists here have been in Boulder for a very long time … they enjoy the plein-air aspect,” Mitchum says.

Located in the heart of downtown Boulder, Rembrandt Yard displays cuttingedge, contemporary art from around the world while doubling as an event space.

With its floor-to-ceiling windows facing the intersection of Spruce and 13th streets, it resembles what one might find in SoHo or Williamsburg.

Though the galleries themselves may not attract a lot of foot traffic on a typical day, Rembrandt Yard is able to make sales through their events, which include everything from weddings to yoga classes. This isn’t an entirely new concept — galleries and museums have been pulling double duty for a while now in order to attract visitors and gain more revenue.

But is this strategy indicative of Boulder’s art scene as a whole?

Charlotte LaSasso, executive director at Boulder County Arts Alliance, understands the struggles that many local artists and arts organizations deal with.

LaSasso says there are some conditions — regulations against some forms of advertising such as banners, lack of living/work spaces for artists — which make it more difficult for artists in Boulder to prosper.

LaSasso explains that while the City has recently stepped up in significant ways, many challenges still exist for artists in the area.

visual arts at Dairy Arts Center, agrees that she doesn’t see as much art appreciation in Boulder as she would like, but hopes the Dairy can continue to push the City’s creative culture foreward.

But a lack of creative space isn’t the only obstacle the Boulder arts scene is trying to hurdle.

“In Colorado, our competition is pretty stiff because the outdoors here are so incredible,” Parker says.

While Boulder’s first artists came here in order to be inspired by the outdoors, today’s artists are competing with the outdoors for the attention of its residents and visitors.

Adrienne Amato and Kelly Cope Russack are working to combat that with the creation of the Boulder Creative Collective (BCC) — an idea the two conceived while, coincidentally, hiking Mount Sanitas. Amato, a trained fine art painter, was ready to get back into the studio after having her son, but wasn’t sure where in the Boulder art scene she fit into.

“We imagined a place where artists could create, co-mingle with other creatives, network and exhibit their work,” Russack explains. Today, the alternative space comprises six studios and a gallery.

While Amato and Russack say they have seen a lot of positive growth since starting BCC in 2013, they would like to see more support from the larger agencies moving to Boulder. It’s no secret that Boulder has seen an influx of tech companies (some large, like Google, others smaller, like Wunder Capital), and Mitchum of Rembrandt Yard believes they may be the missing piece of the puzzle that is Boulder’s art scene.

According to Mitchum, a young, innovative group of people with disposable income could help create a larger demand for art.

Additionally, support from these companies in the form of corporate art collections culled from local artists, providing employees with free museum access and sponsoring events, could be what helps boost the creative culture in Boulder to its full potential. Recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis and the National Endowment for the Arts says the arts contributed $763.6 billion to the U.S. economy in 2018 — more than agriculture or transportation. When viewed as a part of BOULDER WEEKLY

the economic ecosystem, the arts have proven to be an important tool in any city’s economic and cultural development.

Of course, it’s also up to all of us.

While Boulder is known for the outdoors, this doesn’t mean we have to leave the arts behind in the dust kicked up by our hiking boots. On those days when the sky threatens rain or when you’re just a little too sore for Bear Peak, check out any one

here are a few things I wish someone would have told me before renting my first room in Boulder. Don’t take apart your bed if you don’t know how to put it back together. There is no way all of your clothes will fit in your closet. Your garbage disposal will probably break sooner rather than later. Expect to get your car towed at least once. And just because you can get a pet doesn’t mean you should.

Boulder is a great place to live, but renting here can be a nail-biting, sanity-sabotaging, expensive challenge. And everyone’s desire to live here only makes it worse. But with some insider knowledge, tips and local advice, finding a new home can be easy.

GETTING STARTED The first step in any renter’s process should be to determine your budget. What are you able to spend on rent each month? Most experts say aim to spend around 30 percent of your monthly income on rent. Start here before considering anything else.

Set your budget and stick to it, or you’ll find yourself short of cash on the first of the month.

DON’T FORGET THE WIFI While determining what you are willing to spend, be sure to include utilities and extra fees. Trash disposal, water, electricity and internet should all be a part of the total. Know which utilities are included in your rent and which are not. Plan for additional costs like application fees and security deposits.

Some rentals may ask for first and last month’s rent in advance. Planning for these expenses in your budget can make paying for everything else each month a little easier.

And when you finally go to set up your new WiFi after moving in, don’t be afraid to call the company and ask for help.

CONSIDER YOUR NEEDS Yes, having access to a pool sounds luxurious, but the more amenities included in a rental, the more you pay to live there. Determine what is a necessity for yourself and then focus on the wants.

Is easy access to public transportation essential for you to get to work? Do you need a parking spot?

In-unit laundry? A quiet location? Prioritize what you need to live comfortably and then focus on what you would like to have. Granite countertops aren’t everything, people.

BUT LOCATION IS EVERYTHING Seriously. Generally, central Boulder is going to be expensive. These are the neighborhoods closest to Pearl Street, Chautauqua and CU. These locations’ accessibility to all of the Boulder action makes them worth the price. If you are looking for something slightly more affordable, consider neighborhoods in North or South Boulder. If location isn’t on your priority list, but price is, start here. It is safe to say that places outside the heart of Boulder are more likely to be quiet and family-friendly, too.

YOUR MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS Try to live as close as you can to where you work or go to school. Commuting can be taxing. The gas money you might spend on commuting every day could be rent money instead. Which one will keep you sane: Driving 20 minutes to work every day or paying another $100 a month for rent?

One of the pros of Boulder is the city’s extensive public transportation system, and with an RTD pass, getting around town is easy and convenient. If you are a student, an RTD bus pass is included in your tuition fees, FYI. THEY SAY HARD WORK PAYS OFF If you aren’t ready to give up the idea of a prime location, with some flexibility and perseverance, it isn’t impossible to find a good deal. Stay vigilant in your search to find somewhere affordable in the heart of Boulder. Check websites like Craigslist and Apartments.com frequently because good deals disappear just as quickly as they are posted. Boulder Property Management, FourStar and other popular rental companies post online listings that are frequently updated. You might stumble upon a deal you can’t pass up. If you’re low- or middle-income, Boulder Housing Partners, the City’s housing authority, can help get you into an affordable unit, too.

WHAT TIME IS IT? When starting to look for a new place to rent, consider what time of year it is. Having a major university in town, many leases end on the last day of July and begin on the first day of August. College students sign their leases as early as possible, sometimes even before the new year. Be prepared to move in August but start looking as early as October the year prior. Starting in January, a good amount of homes are already under lease. The remaining renters then enter panic mode to find anything they can afford, which leads to places disappearing from the market quickly.

There are still some subleases available during other months, but pickings may be slim. If you need to move on short notice or need something temporary, subleasing is a good option.

SHARING IS CARING Most places for rent in Boulder are multi-room apartments and houses. Consider finding roommates to live with before actually finding a place to live. It’s much easier to find a four-bedroom home than it is to find three other people to live with. Having roommates locked in before looking for a place to rent can make the search easier, too. Divide and conquer.

Search for places, visit neighborhoods, go on tours together.

Studios and one-bedroom apartments are available, of course. But if pennies are being pinched on rent, this isn’t going to be a realistic option for you.

Single units vary in price but expect to be paying around $1,500 a month for rent.

If you don’t have anyone to move with and a single bedroom just isn’t an option for you and your wal36

let, do some research to find bedrooms available in units due to people moving out. It can be time-consuming and requires access to some websites, like Ralphies List or Facebook groups, but it is a cheap and convenient way to move. Word of mouth can be helpful here, too.

BUT ROOMMATES AREN’T ALWAYS EASY… Especially when living in tight quarters. Be prepared to do other people’s dishes. Remember, communication is key when living with other people. Here are some tips for making living together as easy as possible.

• Make a cleaning schedule: This ensures the work is getting done, and getting done equally.

Having just one person clean up after everyone else is likely to create tension in the dwelling.

• Clean up after yourself: Just because you have a cleaning schedule, does not mean you can be a slob. Do your dishes. Don’t leave personal belongings scattered among the common areas. And please, please throw away your old food.

• Respect each other’s space: This one is easy.

Don’t barge into your roommate’s room without asking or knocking. Don’t use their stuff without being INSIDER ’19

granted permission. Be respectful.

• Communicate about having guests over: If your significant other is going to spend a weekend with you or your grandma is coming to visit, ask your roommates if this is OK with them beforehand. Your home is their home, too, and it’s essential everyone feels similarly.

• Sharing is caring: Be open to sharing but understand when a roommate doesn’t want to.

Communicate boundaries and don’t make assumptions.

• Be aware of the code enforcement in the area before signing a lease. Particularly, how many nonrelated people are allowed to live in a house together. Breaking code enforcement can result in hefty fines.

DURING THE MOVE If you thought finding a place was stressful, wait until you start packing, moving boxes and carrying furniture. Relocating your entire life might be the cause of your next mental breakdown, so plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time for the actual move.

However, before you start bringing in boxes, I

make sure all the basics are taken care of. Walk the place with your landlord, document and take pictures of any damage to the property — you don’t want to be held accountable for them when you move out.

ONCE THE BASICS ARE TAKEN CARE OF...

A few tips for your move: • Color coordinate: Mark your boxes with tape or markers of different colors. Designate individual rooms a specific color. Color coordinating your boxes makes unpacking much more manageable.

• Label: Label everything for the same purpose as above but as a backup. By labeling what is in a box, you will also be able to find things quickly if they are needed during or after the move.

• “Open Me First” box: Create a box that you will put all the essentials in.

Food, toiletries, a pillow; anything you might need for the first night at your new apartment because after a long day of moving boxes, unpacking them is probably the last thing you will want to do.

• Get boxes from stores: The stores in your local community probably have stacks of unused boxes that they recycle at the end of the night.

Don’t be afraid to ask if you can have some. That way, boxes are being reused, and you can save money. Try a liquor store or a wholesale retailer like Sam’s Club.

• Use blankets and clothing in place of bubble wrap: Save money and space where you can. Wrapping fragile items in clothes or blankets can do both of these.

HOARDING: DON’T BURY YOURSELF ALIVE Leave the junk behind and only pack the essentials. Moving is a great time to clean your closets, pantries and cupboards. You are going to go through everything anyway, so get rid of things that you no longer use. Less stuff means less to carry upstairs and unpack later. Plus, it’s a fresh start.

Minimize your waste and dispose of items properly. Old furniture and clothes should be donated to thrift shops or sold for reuse. Old paint and cleaning products should be brought to a hazardous waste facility. Get rid of your junk sustainably and safely.

GET IN. WE’RE GOING SHOPPING Don’t be afraid to part with old fur-

niture when moving. Boulder is a hub for second-hand shopping, and the Target on Pearl street is stocked with housing essentials.

The Goodwill on the corner of Baseline and Broadway is a wellknown hot spot for second-hand furniture. People love to donate anything and everything to this location, especially students, when they are moving.

Look around and see if anything catches your eye. You never know what you might find at this Goodwill.

For specific needs, Craigslist, NextDoor and Facebook Marketplace are great virtual places to find cheap necessities. When people are moving in and out at the end of July, Facebook is loaded with furniture postings.

People purge through their belongings (just like you should) and decide what they need and what they don’t. Most of the furniture on Facebook is relatively cheap and in good condition.

FEELING ADVENTUROUS? If you want to get really crazy with finding furniture for your new rental, consider driving around The Hill at the end of July. Students moving out will leave household items like couches, mattresses, desks and even air conditioners on the corner of the streets with a “FREE” sign taped to it. Just don’t, ever, take the mattress. Bed bugs are a problem you don’t want.

CAN I BORROW YOUR TAPE MEASURE? Plan ahead by taking measurements of the doorways, hallways and rooms in your new place to make sure any new furniture will fit. Consider how you are going to transport your new furniture. If it doesn’t fit in your car, rent a truck, or, better yet, see if a good friend will let you borrow theirs.

Communicate with the seller before moving new items because sometimes they are willing to help.

momentum Boulder boasts a thriving community of local laboratories

AS

astronauts gear up for a new space mission and climate scientists strive to save the melting ice caps, the benefits from scientific discoveries seem far from home. But that isn’t the case in Boulder County. Pull out your phone, and you’ll see the efforts from multiple local labs.

Just the weather app alone uses data collected from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), with equipment and models developed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), both located along the base of the Flatirons. Even your cell phone’s clock is tied to the atomic clock housed in the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST), which proudly displays its timekeeper on Broadway for all to see.

For decades, Boulder has boasted a rich scientific community. NIST, NCAR and NOAA are just a handful of organizations around town — theres’ also the University of Colorado and its laboratories like the Institute of Alpine and Arctic Research (INSTAAR) and the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), to name a few. Together, they all cast a wide net of research, disciplines, expertise and applications that affect various aspects of our everyday lives.

In 2016, federally funded research facilities in Colorado contributed $2.6 billion to the state economy, with Boulder County contributing $1.1 billion, according to a 2017 report done by the Leeds School of Business at CU. And in 2017, the U.S. Census ranked Boulder as the third most educated city in the country.

There’s a synergy that exists in Boulder, says Theo Stein, public affairs officer with NOAA. He says the diversity of institutions allows for a medley of different approaches that, together, advance scientific and academic research.

“It is a virtuous circle. It creates its own weather, if you will, its own intellectual momentum,” Stein says. “There’s a See LABORATORIES on PAGE 40

real center of gravity for this kind of research here.

It creates a self-sustaining culture of scientific exploration.”

It’s hard to encapsulate the breadth and depth of research at these labs. Take NOAA as an example: Its work reaches from Boulder to explosions on the sun’s surface and how they affect Earth. The Boulder campus includes an Earth system research lab with divisions in chemical sciences, global monitoring, global systems and physical science. NOAA also houses the National Centers for Environmental Information, which aggregates weather and climatological information, and the National Weather Service, with a Denver/Boulder weather forecast office and a space weather prediction center.

“The laboratories are highly specific and highly quality-controlled in order to get rigorous data that the rest of the world’s scientific community can utilize for their own research,” Stein says. “Our greenhouse gas record is pretty much the foundation of international climate research.”

Boulder’s scientific hub is known throughout the world, making Boulder a magnet for expertise. For example, NIST houses three Nobel laureates who have won prizes in physics and quantum mechanics. Models, technology and research used from these labs span the globe.

“We’ve had reporters who tell us that when they make phone calls, it’s two area codes: 202, which is all Washington D.C. and all the policy going off around science, and 303. It’s here,” says David Hosansky with NCAR. Several of the prominent labs in Boulder popped up in the post-war era. During the Cold War, competition between nations drove research. Labs came to Boulder for myriad reasons. Stein says officials became concerned of a potential nuclear attack on Washington D.C. wiping out the country’s vital services. So, the Department of Commerce, which is NOAA’s and NIST’s parent agency, opened a campus in Boulder in the 1950s to distribute its intellectual capital.

NIST also had other reasons that drew its operations to Boulder, says Marla Dowell, director of NIST Communications Technology Laboratory and NIST Boulder Laboratory. Boulder’s moderate population and its location created a radio-free zone, which helped with measurements and standards

related to early radar work.

This lack of radio waves also made NIST an ideal location to continue to develop and improve the atomic clock, which NIST has been working on since 1948. The current iteration, which came online in 2014 is the global standard.

“The latest NIST-F2 atomic clock is so accurate that it will neither gain nor lose a second of time in about 300 million years,” Dowell says.

Measuring time is only one of NIST’s specialties. Its primary focus is to support industry, and it does so by making better devices such as developing more accurate measurements for high-power lasers to help welders, or working on virtual reality simulators for firefighters, SWAT team members and first responders.

Applied science is strong across the board at all the laboratories. NCAR is responsible for many of the climate models used today, including weather and water forecasting. Researchers there have improved weather observation collection in developing nations by creating affordable, durable 3D printed plastic equipment. Through research, NCAR and others solve real-world problems.

“We study almost anything that’s affected by the air — aircraft, road weather, how roads are affected by weather — and better forecasting those conditions and getting better information to both state departments of transportation and drivers,” Hosansky says. “So, in winter, if the State of Indiana is trying to figure out what particular stretches of road are going to be most affected by an incoming winter storm, they’ll use technology that’s been developed by NCAR. There are a lot of subtle ways that better understanding the atmosphere is useful for society.”

And with all the institutions in a central location, they can work together to help achieve a greater good.

While NIST might not be delving into the underlying causes and concerns of climate change, Dowell says, it can build more accurate measurement tools that other labs can use. Dowell cites NIST’s collaboration with NOAA to improve the ability to detect methane, which will in turn lead to better findings and eventually stronger solutions to managing this greenhouse gas.

The house that Thuy built Thuy Le’s unexpected road from Saigon waitress to Boulder restaurant legend

Decades of hard work and delicious food have made Chez Thuy an institution in Boulder.

The

name of the iconic eatery still says it all: Chez Thuy Fine Vietnamese Cuisine. Thuy Le is the most successful, least-known restaurateur in the city’s dining history, outlasting hundreds of restaurants of all flavors. She has been dishing spring rolls in Boulder since the start of the Clinton administration.

And while the sign on the building says Vietnamese, the fare being served is really Thuy (pronounced “twee”) cuisine.

A lot of Thuy’s customers are regulars, dining every week or month or year. “People come back after five years away and tell me that they can’t find food that tastes like this,” she says.

“That’s because it’s food by me. I’m not always in the kitchen, but I’m always tasting sauces. It has to taste right to me.”

Ironic, because Thuy did her best for much of her career to avoid the kitchen. “I didn’t go to chef school. I learned with the job. In the restaurant business, none of the Vietnamese chefs would teach me. If I liked a dish I figured out how to cook it,” she says.

CUTTING LIME WEDGES IN DALAT Growing up in Saigon, Thuy’s parents died when she was young, and she lived with her grandmother. “I always loved to eat, but I never learned how to cook from her. We ate simple dishes like Vietnamese sweet and sour soup and fish hot pots,” she says.

By the time she was 17, Thuy had left home and went to work in the city of Dalat. “I always worked in coffee shops and bars. I was a waitress most of my life. I never went in the kitchen. The only thing I knew how to do was to cut lime and lemon wedges for cocktails,” she says.

By 1970, the Vietnam War was reaching a dangerous crescendo.

Thuy says: “I was married to an American civilian, and he brought me and our son to the U.S., to Spokane.” She and her son eventually moved to Denver because they knew people here. “I was working 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. as a cocktail waitress at a Mexican restaurant in a Holiday Inn,” she says.

Southeast Asian refugees started arriving in large numbers in the metro area in the late 1970s. Until then there were only a handful of local Vietnamese or Thai restaurants. “A lot of the new people were opening grocery stores and restaurants, especially on Federal [Boulevard in Denver]. I’m here a long time working hard, so I’m wondering, ‘What about me?’” she says.

Thuy — or “T” — and her girlfriend “Wa” (who knew how to cook), opened the T-Wa Inn in Denver with a few simple dishes that were unfamiliar to most local diners except veterans who had developed a taste for the complexities of Vietnamese seasoning while overseas.

“We started getting big right away.

Everybody wanted to have the soft shell crab,” Thuy says. The dish, Cua Lột — batter-fried sweet soft-shell crab — is still a menu favorite. The T-Wa Inn became one of the region’s best-known Asian restaurants.

27 YEARS AND COUNTING After years in the business, Boulder beckoned.

“I always liked Boulder a lot,” Thuy says. “This place on 28th Street used to be Old Saigon Restaurant. In 1992 they asked me if I wanted the location. I said yes right away.”

The business enterprise needed to pay off in the long run because Thuy invested $200,000 to clean and refit the leased kitchen and restaurant. She now owns the building, and many of her staff have been with her for years.

Thuy says the eatery’s top-selling dishes are spring rolls, Vietnamese grilled combo plate with noodles, curries — green, yellow or red — and the signature dish: Pho. “I really didn’t want to do pho at all because it’s a lot of work. Then, the customers started asking, ‘Do we have pho?’

So, after that, we had pho,” Thuy says. A big white bowl of five-spiced broth is filled with slurpable noodles, green onions and diverse meats, like the top combo of rare steak and brisket. A plate of bean sprouts, Thai basil, jalapeño slices and lime wedges accompanies the bowl, along with condiments.

DISHES FROM ASIA AND MARTHA Thuy is no purist and has featured dishes on her menu from across Asia. “When I opened Chez Thuy in Boulder there weren’t a lot of Asian restaurants. I knew I had to have choices the customers want,” she says.

That’s how the restaurant came to serve Chinese-influenced sesame chicken and larb from Laos.

Locals fell in love with the wide rice noodles in chow fun, the thin ones in pad Thai and chewy udon noodles in peanut butter coconut green curry with shrimp. They applauded fare that could easily be prepared vegetarian, low-fat and largely glutenfree.

Beyond the must-haves, the menu keeps evolving. “That gives me a chance to introduce new tastes that I come up with. It keeps it interesting,” Thuy says.

Take the eatery’s popular Malaysian seafood stir-fry. You would be mistaken if you assumed it was an old family recipe. “I was watching Martha Stewart on TV, and she was making a Malaysian stir-fry. It looked so good, so I decided to make it and put it on the menu,” Thuy says.

THE FUTURE OF THUY CUISINE Chez Thuy is still introducing itself to Boulder newcomers. On a recent afternoon, I

Rapid-fire Vietnamese comes from the kitchen as Thuy’s son, Michael Reeves, keeps an eye on everything in the dining room, as he has for 15 years.

Thuy doesn’t hang out with other chefs, worry about creating a buzz or care about social media influencers. “I just have guts.

I’ve always worked hard,” she says.

A longtime customer stopped in recently to get takeout and made a point of saying, “Hi,” to Thuy. “He said: ‘I’m so glad you guys are still here and prospering,’” she says with a smile.

Now the city is synonymous with the world’s largest single-site brewery, Coors, the Colorado School of Mines, and all the appeal of a mountain town without the drag of a four-hour drive. oulder has secrets. A lot of secrets.

According to legend, Boulder was almost the home of Colorado’s maximum-security prison — Carson City fought hard for the honor; Boulder got the University of Colorado instead. But don’t worry, Boulder still has plenty of blood on its hands: U.S. Army Colonel John Chivington rallied his battalion in Boulder Valley before riding down to Big Sandy Creek and slaughtering Arapahoe and Cheyenne women and children, along with Chief Niwot, on November 29, 1864.

But hey, it’s not all bad! A Boulder courthouse clerk named Clela Rorex issued the first same-sex marriage license in the nation in 1975. There hasn’t I

been a riot in Boulder since 2002 — when the city outlawed upholstered furniture on front lawns. And Boulder was home to The Temple of Venus, run by one of Colorado’s few black madams, Molly Gordon.

Bonus trivia: Gordon was a close personal friend of President Ulysses S. Grant — emphasis on close.

tures loveseats, couches and one horse saddle for seats, cup holders fashioned out of cut-up jeans, green astroturf for the flooring, bolts of fabric decorated with mandalas to cover the pitched roof and Christmas lights to tie the room together. Ever seen a “Keep Boulder Weird” bumper sticker? The designer probably had Banjo Billy’s in mind.

It’s quite a sight, and it’s a Boulder staple. New in town? Family visiting?

Curious about how the 161-year-old city came to be? Need more puns in your everyday life? Pile into Banjo Billy’s and let them escort you around town. It’s like Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise, only with more death.

“At one time that was the city morgue,” the guide says as the bus rumbles past Salt on Pearl Street.

“They’ve been serving up slabs of beef I

for a while now.”

Turning up Pearl, the bus passes Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar. “When they renovated the building in the early ’90s, they discovered that it was once a house of ill-repute,” she says. “Which was something, considering next door was the police station.”

Now it’s the West End Tavern.

Further up the road is the ArnettFullen House, built 1877 by Will Arnett, “Boulder’s first trust fund baby,” the guide jokes.

The house, a gorgeous example of mixed style: gothic revival, carpenter gothic, second empire and Italianate, is still in excellent condition and features one of Boulder’s oldest cottonwood trees out front. Like the rest of Boulder, the cottonwood is a transplant that refuses to give up its prime real estate.

Oh, and the Arnett-Fullen house is haunted. Hell, practically every building in Boulder is haunted, or, at least, its third floor is. Banjo Billy’s lives to highlight them. They even do a Haunted Boulder tour in October; the material must be endless.

In addition to the Boulder history and haunted tours, Banjo Billy’s also offers a history tour of Denver and brewery tours of Boulder and Denver.

And that’s what makes Banjo Billy’s such an enjoyable jaunt around the town; it’s light and odd but far from sanitized. You learn how Mary Rippon — the first woman to teach at a state university — managed to keep her marriage and child secret from her bosses at CU. “It’s the University of Colorado, but we call it ‘CU’ because we’re dyslexic,” the guide says.

Speaking of CU, why doesn’t David H. Nichol’s name appear on at least one building of the university he helped bring to Boulder? Hint: It involves the Sand Creek Massacre. Some spots just won’t come out no matter how hard you scrub.

Speaking of spots, ask about a certain school logo painted on the Third Flatiron. It’s been there for over 60 years, and people are still debating its origin.

Banjo Billy’s history tours take about 90 minutes and traverse the city from the Hotel Boulderado to Chautauqua and back. A word to the wise: Sit in the front of the bus unless being jostled around is your idea of a good time. If it is, there is a couch in the far back with plenty of tired springs.

Then it really will be a lot like a theme park ride.
