L

et’s put the way-back machine on your life for a little bit, and ask you to consider your first day at kindergarten. It was a high stakes moment, right? You were branching out from home in a new way, facing increased responsibilities and more time on your own to build your own social network, create a reputation for yourself with authority figures and take advantage of learning opportunities to cultivate skills and expand your knowledge of the world.

At its essence, that’s not so different from your first day of college.

New opportunities, new challenges, some intimidating changes to the responsibilities and expectations and the consequences for your decisions.

And just because someone has dictated that by age 18, just like by age 5, you’re ready for this massive leap doesn’t mean you feel ready for it. Or maybe you do.

Maybe you’re so eager to get out there you had your bags packed back in July and have already read the first chapters of all of the textbooks you have already purchased for the classes you’re already enrolled in.

In either case, you’re likely to be hit with a few snags along the way — a class that’s tougher than you expected, a professor you just don’t jive with, a less-than-ideal living situation, a social landscape lonelier than you expected.

So let’s look back to kindergarten and the things that brought you to tears in those days — that you didn’t get the right color crayon, that you couldn’t update your backpack every time your favorite cartoon character changed, that you had to wait more than two minutes for a turn on the swings. At this point, they’re worth more laughter than tears.

It’s not to say that the choices you make in college are as inconsequential as whether recess went your way, but looking back on them, you may find the things you let stress you out (that aren’t your grades and your career development) are probably, like crayons and swingset rides, not quite the catastrophe we imagine. So take it with some humor, and stay focused on learning your colors, numbers and letters, or whatever it is you’ve graduated to now. And remember that at the end of a rough day, the same cures will still apply: let your Mom or Dad give you a hug (verbal hugs over the phone count) and treat yourself to a little milk and cookies.

Albums on the Hill — Yes,Virginia, there is still such a thing as a record store.

And this is a Boulder classic.

Alferd Packer Restaurant & Grill — Wondering if your university has a sense of humor?

Well stroll on over to the University Memorial Center and order up a juicy roast beef sandwich at the Alferd Packer Restaurant & Grill and you’ll have your answer. As far as we know, this is the only eating establishment in the country named for a cannibal. The short version goes like this. Packer and a few other hardy souls headed west in wagons. It snowed. They got stuck in the mountains. Everybody died. Packer managed to put on a few pounds.

How’s that sandwich?

Atomic clock — What time is it? If you really want to be accurate, check out the atomic clock at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) at 325 Broadway. Boulder actually sets the time for the world. NIST makes for an interesting tour.

Bag fee — Paper or plastic? Either will get you $.10 each tacked on to your grocery bill. Get a canvas bag and use it.

Binge drinking — This is often defined as having more than four (women) or five (men) drinks in one sitting, or about two hours, bringing the blood alcohol level above .08. While you may be eager to sow your wild oats and engage in this practice regularly in college, recall the tale of Gordie Bailey, a CU fraternity pledge whose alcohol-induced death shook the university to its core in September 2004.

Boulder International Film Festival — Boulder is home to the Boulder International Film Festival (BIFF), which takes place every February.

Venues all over town are turned into screening rooms and the stars show up to discuss their creative work.Very cool.

Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art — Visit the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA) for a dose of art that will make you think. The museum is located at 1750 13th St.

Flatirons — You know, those cool-looking rock slabs on the mountain behind you. Despite it being everyone’s favorite mistake, these aren’t actually advisable territory for hiking after consuming alcoholic beverages or psychedelic drugs. Keep yourself safely on your couch at that point.

Fixies — This is a fun term for the fixedgear bike favored by many in the cruiser set. (See “Cruiser Rides.”) You know how, on most bikes, you have multiple gears and you can stop pedaling and coast? On a fixie, not so much. And that allows you to do fun things like ride backwards, since the rear wheel turns in whatever direction the pedals do.

Fringe Festival — This off-beat event has something for everyone: live theatre, dance, circus art, media art, cinema, visual art, spoken word, puppetry, workshops and storytelling. It will be held Sept. 18-29 at various locations around downtown Boulder. And by various locations, we mean performances could go down in the back of a taxi or in a large cardboard box.

Cannabis — see “Dope” Conference on World Affairs — The Conference on World Affairs, held in April each year, is a highlight for the entire Boulder community. It’s a global conversation wherein everyone, including you, can participate. Students can volunteer or just sit in on the sessions like everyone else. In a nutshell, the conference is comprised of smart famous people discussing creative and important topics with whoever shows up and there is no charge. Don’t miss it in April.

Cruiser rides — On most Thursday evenings, a bunch of hipsters jump on their bikes and ride around downtown Boulder hollering “Happy Thursday!” There’s a different theme each week (see www.cruiserbikeride.org).

If you ride a fixie, have a neck-beard (or aspire to one) and like indie rock, you’ll be in good company.

Dairy Center for the Arts — If you find yourself in need of an art fix and the thought of seeing another Will Ferrell movie makes you queasy, don’t despair. Wander on over to the Dairy Center for the Arts

Dushanbe Tea House — For more stimulation, think caffeine. The tea house was a gift from one of Boulder’s sister cities and is an architectural wonder and a great place to drink tea or eat a fine meal.

Eldora Mountain Resort — So you wake up, look out your window, and see that two feet of fresh powder has fallen overnight. What do you do? Find somebody with all wheel drive and head 21 miles straight up Boulder Canyon until you arrive at Eldora Mountain Resort. While not big by Colorado standards, it’s a great place to test yourself after a winter storm.

Elway, John — See “Our Lord and Savior” Emergency rooms — It’s good to know that Boulder has not one but two different emergency rooms, one at Boulder Community Hospital, 1100 Balsam Ave., and the other at Boulder Community Foothills Hospital, 4747 Arapahoe Ave.

Farmers’ Market — This is that place where you go when you want to eat healthy, when your body begins to rebel against all of the Twinkies, beer and ramen you have poured down your gullet. Open Saturdays April to November, and Wednesdays May to October.

George, Rick — The new definition of one of the following words: Savior, scapegoat, bust, overrated, overpaid. Only time will tell which moniker gets hung on CU’s new athletic director. Lets hope it’s that first one.

GLBTQIA — Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer, Intersex and Allied. The acronym may be getting longer each year, but you should get involved in one of the most significant civil rights struggles of our time by checking out the GLBTQ Resource Center on campus.

Greek life — If today’s Greek life on campus is a reflection of the culture for which it’s named, then it’s likely Pythagoras came up with his theorem while trying to calculate the shortest way home from a toga party.

Green — We assume you chose to come to school in Boulder because you already knew it is a place where environmentalism is at the forefront of nearly every decision. If not, we suggest you don’t get caught not recycling. We take that stuff seriously around these parts.

Heil & Hall — If you like exploring the outdoors, by mountain bike or by foot, these are two of the best parcels of the open space that Boulder County has become famous for. Check them out.

Heritage Center — At the top of Old Main, this serves as a museum of CU history, featuring stuff like moon rocks, Nobel prizes, athletic championship trophies, alumnus Glenn Miller’s trombone and the like.

The Hill — See map on page 19.

History Museum — As in, Boulder History Museum. If you think history is boring you don’t understand where you’re now living. Take, for example the current exhibit. It’s titled BEER! Boulder’s History on Tap. Gotta love history.

Involvement Week — Running Sept. 3-7, the week starts with fairs daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the UMC fountain area (not in the fountain itself), featuring volunteer opportunities, student groups, Greek organizations and study abroad. see A TO Z Page 10

International Film Series — Established in 1941, this is Boulder’s first art-house film scene. But you don’t have to wear a trenchcoat and smoke clove cigarettes to check out celluloid that you won’t see at the local multiplex.

Java — If you are going to live in Boulder and be a successful student, you must choose your coffee well.

This town has an amazingly diverse coffee scene, so try them all before deciding which one will be your caffeine connection and hangout for the next few years.

Jell-O shots — The favorite drink of people who tend to spend an inordinate amount of their life reflecting on what could have been if only they hadn’t discovered Jell-O shots.

Jerks — If you aren’t sure who they are there is a good chance you are one.

KBCO — Our formerly local (they moved to south Denver) radio station that, even though it’s corporately owned, does a pretty damn good job of playing a blend of hipster pop/rock/ alternative, not to mention the fact that it releases a kickin’ live Studio C compilation disc every December.

KGNU — Our personal favorite, because it’s local and independent like us at Boulder Weekly, providing listener-supported community radio that you should donate some of your parents’ money to.

Kind — see “Joint” Kinetic Sculpture Race — People get together and build a zany humanpowered craft/sculpture that can travel on both land and water. Then they race these wacky vehicles at Union Reservoir in Longmont every summer. Go figure.

KUVO — You’re not a true college student until you have Kind of Blue on vinyl.

Tune into 89.3 to listen to an awesome jazz-focused, Denver-based independent radio station.

L-towns — A few months in Boulder will leave you wondering where all the real people live. The answer is simple — the towns beginning with “L” that surround Boulder. Don’t be like your Boulder-bound classmates and venture out to Lafayette, Longmont, Louisville and Lyons.

Left Right Tim — CU’s own improv comedy group. Their act is occasionally booked in Club 156, the venue in the University Memorial Center. Best way to catch up with them is on Facebook.

Local — You can’t be in Boulder without encountering this buzzword. Local food, buy local, bank local — Boulderites prefer to spend where they live, keeping all those dollars in the community.

Marijuana — see “Weed” Medical marijuana — “Medical” is not synonymous with “legal.” As Colorado awaits final rules for recreational marijuana, medical pot is still for people with medical issues.

Microbrews — Once you come of age, you’ll likely mature to more refined perspectives and that will include drinking beer you’ll enjoy too much to suffer it sharing a cup with a ping pong ball. Or a filthy table. And for that matter, you’ll drink it from a glass.

MIP — Minor in Possession tickets are given to those busted with alcohol and who are not of the age to have earned it.

How Boulder County handles them varies based on the number of MIP tickets. They all involve fees, and even the first ticket requires paying for and attending an class on alcohol awareness. They’ll also involve a call from the CU Office of Student Conduct.

Mountains — Green, Bear, Audubon, Sanitas, Longs: Not just random words, but actually the names of some of the mountains and peaks surrounding Boulder.You could grow a beard or learn to play the washtub in a bluegrass band, but you don’t really have true mountain cred until you’ve summited a few of these suckers.

Naropa — Where the real hippies go to school.

National centers — Boulder is home to some terribly fancy equipment and some terribly smart people who know how to make use of it to research matters of critical importance. The acronyms blur, but briefly, they are NCAR (the National Center for Atmospheric Research studies the atmosphere and related systems), NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which does weather forecasts, severe storm warnings and climate monitoring, among other things) and NIST (the National Institute of Standards and Technology, a physical sciences laboratory supporting technology development).

Ned — Nederland, visited usually for Nedfest, an annual three-day music fest the last weekend in August that highlights bluegrass, jam band and jazz music, in addition to art and beer, or for Frozen Dead Guy Days to race coffins, parade hearses and, yes, visit the frozen dead guy.

OSMP — Open Space and Mountain Parks is the branch of the city that manages the trails and open space in the area, including running the Voice & Sight tag program for dogs off leash. Their website includes descriptions of area trails and details about trailheads.

Old Main — Built in 1876, Old Main was the first building on campus and was home to the university president and his family, a library, classrooms and the start of

a museum and science labs.

Our Lord and Savior — See “Elway, John.”

Out Boulder — Boulder’s nearly 20-year-old LGBTQ community organization offers services such as ambassadors for newly out youth and guidance for same sex couples with children, as well as programming, including a queer youth cabaret. The Pridehouse, at 2132 14th St. in downtown Boulder, is open for drop-ins 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and offers WiFi, printers, an LGBT library and quiet corners to study.

Pearl Street Mall — Downtown Boulder’s Susan France celebrated shopping and dining district, replete with locally owned businesses as well as some corporate big-wigs. Everything you’ll ever want to drool over, then somewhere to eat lunch afterward. See map on page 25.

Planetarium — The Fiske Planetarium has been closed for a remodel since December 2012 for a long-awaited update to the material from its initial construction … in 1975. It’s reopening fall 2013 with upgrades to the lenses and projectors to make the dome an “immersive theater” that fills a full 360 degree view with videos on astronomy, travel and art. Probably going to be pretty stunning, but we understand if you’re not cool enough to be seen at a planetarium.

Planet Bluegrass — This outdoor music venue in Lyons really does feel like a different planet when it fills up for its eco-friendly music festivals showcasing the best in bluegrass and folk music to be found anywhere around the country. While most of the action happens in the summer months, the concert series at the Wildflower Pavilion indoor facility at Planet Bluegrass is extending the season into the spring and fall.

Polar Bear Plunge — Hundreds of people jump into the frigid waters of the Boulder Reservoir on Jan. 1 each year for the annual Polar Bear Plunge. It’s all in the name of raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Quaker Friends House — The Boulder Friends Meetinghouse started in the 1950s with an ad in the paper for a home gathering of people

interested in a Quaker Meeting for Worship — a fundamental tenet of that religion being that a “church” is the people and not the building. People still gather at the local meetinghouse for worship — and offer adult education classes on Quakerism 101 if you’re interested to get more familiar.

Queer Initiative — A politically active student group highlighting issues facing the GLBTQIA community. If fighting for gay rights is a priority for you, look for the group’s events around campus.

Quiet — What you’ll go to Norlin Library to seek, and sometimes fail to find.

Ralphie — Just the baddest mascot in the country.

CU has a real buffalo running around Folsom Field during home football games, manned by a dozen of your peers, called Ralphie Runners.

Reefer — see “Ganja” Rockpile — Coors Field is a beautiful stadium, and the Rockpile is the cheapest way ($4) to get there for a game. Sure, the players might look like ants from the nosebleeds, but everyone in Colorado knows the Rockpile has the best atmosphere of anywhere in the stadium.

Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center — The RMPJC was created by individuals who had been involved in the peaceful protests against the Rocky Flats nuclear bomb plant (now a wildlife preserve found just east of Highway 93 south of Boulder). The center continues to organize with members and network organizations to address environmental and social justice issues. Rockin’ Betty’s Community Thrift Store benefits the center.

RTD — This company operates the buses that will take you around town if you can’t afford a car. Also, the buses are free with your student ID, so start studying those schedules.

Velodrome — The massive, undulating ring of the Boulder Valley Velodrome in Erie is a symbol of the area’s love of cycling — and, for the past month, a symbol of perseverance. While it was under con-

Visual Arts Center — CU’s Visual Arts Center opened in 2010 and serves painting, sculpting, digital arts students and more. It also houses the CU Art Museum.

Xeriscaping — Those rock-filled lawns filled with flowery bushes rather than the usual Kentucky bluegrass? They’re not a sign of laziness, they’re a gardening method that accommodates Boulder’s low rainfall.

Xs on your hands from the bar — Yes, the instructor in your Monday morning class will notice, and she will judge the heck out of you. For hanging at bars when you’re under 21, and for evidently not owning soap.

ost students arriving at college simply can’t wait to start cooking for themselves, setting aside some time to spend in the kitchen preparing fresh meals, lovingly attending to a hot stove to make their food.

Yep, that’s most college students. But just in case — just on an off chance that a few college students don’t want to cook all their food or maybe their dorm rooms don’t even have a kitchen — we’ve pulled together a brief guide to dining as a University of Colorado student. It’s not a review or even a set of recommendations — if you came to college to hear other people’s opinions, we have bad news for you about the idea of college — but it’s a starter into the wonderful world of eating on a budget.

In particular, restaurants around CU accommodate late-night dining — though, again, we have no idea why. Pizza is the go-to option after dark; Abo’s Pizza on the Hill is open until 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday, as is Fatty J’s, also on the Hill.

Cosmo’s, both on the Hill and at Baseline and 30th next to Williams Village, is open until 2 a.m.

Calzones from D.P. Dough just off the Hill are available until 1:45 a.m. every weeknight and until 2:45 a.m. Thursday-Saturday night. Memphis-inspired wings at South Mouth, nearby at Broadway and Arapahoe, are served until 3 a.m. every night.

And for super-late food, Bova’s Market and Grill at 1325 Broadway is open until 3 a.m. on most days, 4 a.m. Thursday-Saturday; University Hill Market & Deli is open 24 hours.

Bang for Your Buck Even without a coupon, it’s important to look for ways to avoid paying full price.

On Pearl Street, two sushi restaurants offer deals that are good opportunities for college students to indulge in the wonderful but usually beyond-their-budget delicacy. At Japango, specials rotate daily, but hungry students should take note of Tuesdays’ all-you-can-eat offer for $29.95. At Hapa, twin happy hours — 2:30-5:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. – 12 a.m. — mean two sushi rolls for $7. Sushi Hana on 3:11 PM the Hill, meanwhile, has some designated rolls always priced at two for $7, in case you’re hungry and it’s not 10 p.m.

If all-you-can-eat sounds good but you prefer your food cooked, options abound in Boulder. Aside from the usual cuisines that get the buffet treatment, Indian and Chinese, there’s the pizza buffet at Beau Jo’s, including their thick-crust Colorado pies. There are also special vegan buffets at Nepal Cuisine on Mondays and a brand-new

setup on Fridays at Jill’s, as well as a lunch buffet at Ethiopian restaurant Ras Kassa’s. If you’ve got a ride, you could try the Italian all-you-can-eat at Ragazzi in Longmont.

Delivery Sadly, all-you-can-eat buffets can’t be delivered, but lots of other food can. That’s especially true as new services have sprung up that bring together multiple restaurants’ menus under one delivery service.

Restaurant Runners currently works with 27 restaurants around Boulder, representing cuisine as diverse as Mexican (100% Mexicano, Casa Alvarez and others), sushi (Japango and Hapa) and Indian (Curry n Kebob, Jaipur and Royal Clay Oven), among others. Restaurant Runners’ website, www.rrboulder.com, has menus for all the restaurants, but diners should call the restaurant directly, after which the restaurant calls Restaurant Runners and arranges the delivery, which costs $4 no matter the size of the order.

For a similar one-stop-shop setup, Hungry Buffs presents menus from around the city with an option for allonline ordering. Hungry Buffs, online at www.hungrybuffs.com, currently features 60 restaurants that offer delivery, some with a fee and some with minimum amounts for delivery. Hungry Buffs has a similar range of cuisines to Restaurant Runners and includes a category for late-night dining.

Pigskin preview Buffs aim for a better season

T

here is an ugly wreck in Ralphie’s rear-view mirror.

Colorado football has suffered through seven consecutive losing seasons, three recent coaching changes and the indignity of a one-win season.

New head coach Mike MacIntyre, the architect of a dramatic rags-toriches story at San Jose State, has decided not to bring up the past with the players who already suffered through it.

“I focus on the now, I focus on the individuals here, I don’t focus on anything quote, ‘that happened last year,’” MacIntyre said. “As a football player, or as an athlete, I imagine you think about different games or different guys you went up against that you might want to get them when you see them again. I think that is a natural competitive instinct, and I would hope that they have that, but that is not something that I dwell on at all.”

So how will the Buffs, many of whom are playing for their third head coach, turn the page after the program experienced four wins and 21 agonizing defeats during its first two years as a member of the Pac-12?

One practice at a time.

Connor Wood, one of six players voted to serve as a team captain this fall, is coming off an impressive offseason and is the heavy favorite to win the starting quarterback job.

Paul Richardson, one of the Pac-12’s most dynamic wide receivers, returns to the huddle after missing the 2012 season with a knee injury. The redshirt junior should draw enough attention to allow Christian Powell, Tony Jones and Josh Ford to run downhill in MacIntyre’s version of the high-

scoring “pistol” offense.

“We have a lot of character,” Richardson said. “CU is not known for having a down football program, and that’s what people are failing to realize. We haven’t been very successful or been to a bowl game of late, but this is not what CU football is about and we’re going to prove that this fall.”

Defensively, the new coaching staff is pleased with the defensive line it inherits, led by Chidera Uzo-Diribe on the edge and Josh Tupou inside. Hard-hitting Derrick Webb leads the linebacking crew, and the secondary can only improve after Kenneth Crawley and Co. were thrown to the wolves last fall.

“I see some talent in areas. I’m not sure we have enough yet,” said veteran defensive coordinator Kent Baer, who also worked under MacIntyre at San Jose State. “We just have to learn to play together as a team to win on a consistent basis.

It’s something we have to continue to stress. It doesn’t take talent to play hard and play physical. It’s a mindset, it’s an attitude, and winning helps that obviously.”

The confidence level inside the Dal Ward Athletic Center has improved dramatically since last November, an evolution that began during spring drills and carried through the summer.

Of course, there is optimism at every camp around the country.

CU felt good about itself a year ago until losing a late lead and dropping the opener to Colorado State in the Rocky Mountain Showdown. A stunning home loss to Sacramento State followed. And the Buffs were outscored 466-124 in the other

nine losses, scoring 35 of those points in the season finale against Utah on Nov. 23.

CU fans are hoping MacIntyre’s blueprint in the WAC — where San Jose State went from 1-12 to 11-2 during his three seasons — will work for the Buffs in the Pac-12.

“My first year as a head coach, I was trying to run around and put out every fire there was. When it’s your first time calling the shots, it’s a little difficult,” MacIntyre said. “So, I’m a lot better this time around I think than I was my first year [at San Jose State].

Also, our coaching staff was all brand new, now our coaching staff is all moving in the same direction.”

Mike Bohn, the CU athletic director who hired this generation’s “Coach Mac,” was asked to resign in May and replaced by Rick George, who will be under pressure to get the department out of a $20 million hole and raise the funds to complete the $170 million facilities project.

The national media expects the Buffs to finish last in the Pac-12 South Division again. The suffering fan base would like to see a more competitive team that provides some hope of winning big again in three or four years.

“I guess the public’s perception, if you read the magazines, is not very good,” MacIntyre said. “I

tell the kids all the time to block out the noise. All we have to worry about is ourselves. Our guys that are putting their helmets on, we just have to worry about what we’re doing. We can’t listen to everything else all around. To really be a good team and a good leader sometimes you have to kind of put the blinders on and just keep going.

“People don’t think you can do it and then all of a sudden it happens.”

The Buffs open the season on Sept. 1 against CSU at Sports Authority Field before hosting Central Arkansas and Fresno State. CU’s attractive Pac-12 schedule includes Oregon (Oct. 5) and USC (Nov. 23) at Folsom Field and difficult road trips to Oregon State (Sept. 28), Arizona State (Oct. 12), UCLA (Nov. 2) and Washington (Nov. 9).

That’s quite a daunting view through the windshield, but MacIntyre believes the CU football program is finally headed in the right direction.

“I don’t know much about the last seven seasons. I just know what we’re going to do as a staff,” MacIntyre said. “I think one of the things that we will be able to do, we have to develop trust in our young men and they have to trust us, we have to trust them. We’re in the process of doing that now.”

Men’s basketball ready to impress

C

olorado men’s basketball has come a long way since Tad Boyle took the program’s reins in April of 2010. Perhaps the best indicator of the vitality of Boyle’s program is the fact that the team’s best player, Andre Roberson, left Boulder for the NBA, and the Buffs will still likely be ranked in the preseason top 25 when October rolls around.

“I think it’s a sign of respect,” said Boyle, who is set to begin his fourth season at the foot of the Flatirons. “It’s a sign that people recognize that you have talented guys in your program.

But with that comes a lot of expectations and a lot of responsibility to live up to those expectations.”

The Buffs are coming off a solid 2012-13 campaign, where a 21-12 record led to a fifth-place finish in the Pac-12. Colorado also earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003, and its second straight appearance overall.

CU’s season came to an end in the second round of the Big Dance, as seventh-seeded Illinois withstood a furious rally from the No. 10 seed Buffaloes, winning by a 57-49 margin.

Four starters from Colorado’s March matchup with the Illini return to campus this fall. Guard Spencer Dinwiddie, who led the Buffs in scoring and spent the summer competing with USA Basketball in the World University Games, figures to lead the Buffalo backcourt with fellow junior Askia Booker. The frontcourt will be anchored by two sophomores, Xavier Johnson and Josh Scott, both of whom had excellent freshman seasons.

Seven-foot senior Ben Mills will be called upon to contribute far more this winter than in his first three years in Boulder. Sophomore guards Xavier Talton and Eli Stalzer saw their fair share of the floor last season, and Boyle is looking for one of the two to develop into a top flight three-point 44 August 22, 2013

shooter over the offseason.

“We need to recruit a knock-down shooter,” Boyle said.We need a guy who can come in and just make shots.

I think we have some guys in the program who can develop into that.”

Forwards Wesley Gordon and Chris Jenkins should be itching to hit the floor after redshirting last season.

Boyle’s incoming crop of freshmen figures to be as strong as ever.Tre’Shaun Fletcher out of Tacoma,Wash., will add to the Buffs’ athleticism. Combo guard Jaron Hopkins from Mesa, Ariz., comes to Boulder with arguably the most hype out of any of the four freshmen. Dustin Thomas is a combo forward who might just be the knockdown shooter Boyle is looking for, and sleeper wing George King from San Antonio rounds out Boyle’s 2013 recruiting class.

The Buffs’ talent, new and old, will be tested with a rigorous non-conference schedule that includes familiar Big 12 foes Kansas, Oklahoma State and Baylor. The Cowboys feature one of college basketball’s most exciting talents in Marcus Smart, a contender for Naismith College Player of the Year honors. Perennial powerhouse Kansas will come to Coors Events Center to meet a Colorado team looking to avenge a 90-54 trouncing in Lawrence in December of 2012.

The Jayhawks will bring the nation’s consensus top freshman in Andrew Wiggins.

“I’m always trying to down play [expectations] as much as possible,” said Boyle. “But when you progress as a program — again, going to three straight postseasons, and back-to-back NCAAs — just the natural progression is to be bigger and better. We think we have the opportunity with the personnel in place to have a great year.

“I couldn’t be more excited about Colorado basketball and the direction we’re headed.”

any students resign themselves to the fact that their competitive athletic careers are over if they aren’t offered a scholarship to play in college. Others may lament that their recreational interests seemingly have no outlet once they are ensconced in academic life. However, a student at the University of Colorado can find competition and valuable life lessons by participating in club sports.

Providing a middle ground between the more recreational intramural sports and the highly regimented scholarship sports programs, club sports offer coaching, teamwork and activity in a framework that can fit into a busy campus life.While teams can be elite units, anyone with any ability is free to join a club sport — and still get a chance to compete at a serious level. Club teams routinely compete for national championships against other programs around the country. From freestyle skiing to equestrian to the 14-time collegiate national champion triathlon team, students have no problems scratching the competitive itch.

“Most of our programs are trying to compete on that [championship] level,” says John Galvin, coach of the men’s club lacrosse team. “Our student athletes are working hard to have a great experience in college, and that’s what we’re trying to offer here.You can play this highly competitive sport within whatever realm you want to play, and represent the University of Colorado as a national team.”

Despite success on the field that includes playing for a collegiate national championship, Galvin appreciates the lessons learned from being part of a team that don’t necessarily show up on the scoreboard.

“I feel that you’re getting this experience of being at a great university getting a great education, but then you have this other thing in your life that

might end up down the road being where you met some of your best friends. It really just depends on what experience the student is after,” says Galvin. “There are a lot of opportunities for students that haven’t been able to learn the sport, and there are students here that are very, very good athletes.”

Senior mechanical engineering major and club triathlon president Jesse Frank echoes the sentiment that club sports are about much more than trying to win championships.

“On our team we have people who are low- and high-level professionals, as well as people who have never learned to swim join the team,” he says. “One thing we really stress as a team is our family atmosphere.

The top guys on the team are always there to help the new team members, whether it’s how to change a flat on a bike ride or getting comfortable swimming in open water. It’s a very friendly atmosphere, and we want everyone to be included, whether you’re a seasoned veteran or just trying to give triathlon

a shot.”

He speaks from experience.

“I knew literally one person when I came here. So [club sports] became my family,” he says. “Living in the dorms is fun and a great way to meet people, but I spent so much time with the people on my team that they’ve become my best friends and my family on campus.”

Senior equestrian captain Lauren Budniewski says she likes the new experiences participating can provide.

“We travel a lot, so you get to go places and meet all different people.

You get to see parts of the country that, if you’re not from around here, you would probably never see,” she says. “Club sports is a good way to meet people who have common interests to create a bond and a friendship.

It’s given me a lot of good friends, a lot of travel experience and a lot of leadership experience as well.”

Some sports are more individualistic. Fly fishing,Taekwondo and racquetball may be more lonely pursuits than an ultimate Frisbee team, but clubs

provide avenues to improve your game and meet like-minded folks.

“Racquetball is a sport you can play your whole life.You meet people and make connections,” racquetball coach Mike Smalley says.

“It’s a great social activity that you can make friends for the rest of your life. … Do your school work, try to make some friends, and get some expertise in the game that you can take with you [forever].”

Worried your studies will suffer from picking up another activity? A 2012-2013 collegiate club sports survey of the CU program showed that nearly 60 percent of responding students said that competing on a club sport team had a positive effect on their academic performance. With the basic tenets of time management and planning needed to course out social, academic and athletic endeavors, a club sports commitment can help students navigate the transition to college.

“I think it definitely helps me academically,” says senior math major Kate Booth, club swim team president.

“It gets me more motivated to get my school work done during the day or whenever I have a break, and it creates a nice community where I met my best friends.”

Over his years as director of CU club sports, Kristopher Schoech has seen his program evolve from an ancillary one to an actual recruiting tool for prospective students.

“You’ve got to have something appealing for each student, otherwise they’re going to go somewhere else,” Schoech says. “People are actually choosing to attend the University of Colorado for their club sports program. It’s become the reality of today.”

Typically, Danny Sanchez isn’t concerned with results during the spring soccer exhibition season. But after watching the Buffs dominate opponents — outscoring them 18-1 with a 7-0-1 record — CU’s second-year head coach believes the team gained confidence and will practice with a swagger entering the 2013 season.

“I think we did build some momentum and we also kept everyone healthy,” Sanchez says.

The Buffs finished 2-8 in the Pac-12 during the spring after going 0-10 in their new conference in 2012.

“It was important to make those gains that we made last year and for the players to see the fruits of their hard work,” Kenneally says.

Track and field

Colorado is now known as Steeplechase U. in the world of collegiate track and field.

Jenny (Barringer) Simpson was the face of the

program while winning NCAA steeplechase titles in 2006, 2008 and 2009. Emma Coburn continued the tradition by winning national championships in the event in 2011 and 2013, sandwiched around her Olympic debut in 2012.

Now it’s Shalaya Kipp’s turn to return to the spotlight. The senior, who won the 2012 women’s steeplechase championship while Coburn was redshirting, returned the favor by redshirting last year. Kipp, who was also an Olympian in 2012, will be favored to deliver the Buffs’ seventh women’s steeplechase championship in the last nine years.

Information about CU’s campus that the guide probably didn’t mention

tudents are often first introduced to their future alma mater on the campus tour as high school seniors or incoming freshmen. But what do students with four years of experience at this school know about CU? As a recent graduate after not four but five years — called an Academic Victory Lap — I consider myself an expert on Colorado’s first public university. So I took the tour again, and I noticed there was some vital information omitted.

Residence halls: Newer is better When asked which residence hall is the best, campus guide and senior Aly Pomerantz says: “The best dorm on campus is the one where you’re staying.” Touché, but let’s not be coy. The better residence halls this year will be the ones that have been recently renovated or are far away from campus construction.

Hallett Hall received a $2.9 million renovation in 2012 that included new furniture, hardwood flooring and locked safes. Posh.

Renovation and construction is great for the students who will move into these buildings, but it’s annoying for those living around it. My freshman year, I lived in Willard Hall when they were constructing the Center for Community (C4C), which meant jackhammer wake-up calls at dawn.

Freshmen in dorms around Farrand Field will know what I mean as renovations of Baker Hall continue through this fall, and those students should know that the bookstore sells four varieties of earplugs.

Norlin Library: an encyclopedia of pet peeves Summer is a great time to take a tour through Norlin because it’s rarely this quiet during the school year. Come Monday, Aug. 26, tens of thou-

sands of students will be on campus and in the library. During finals week, everyone decides to study in Norlin and the library becomes an encyclopedia of pet peeves. When I say everyone goes to Norlin, I mean everyone: people who read aloud when typing, the serial snifflers, people with musical ringtones, that one person who sits right next to you at an otherwise empty table, the screaming sneezers, the open-mouthed eaters and the gum chewers perpetually chewing their cud. However, there are five library branches throughout campus, and all are quieter than Norlin.

Buff Plaza: The confluence C-3PO says the odds of successfully navigating an asteroid field are 3,720 to one, and I suspect safely riding through Buffalo Plaza between class periods is even more unlikely.

The plaza itself is the confluence of four tributaries of pedestrian traffic.

Nearly every hour, students pour out of Muenzinger, Duane Physics, stuffed buses driving up Colorado Avenue and classrooms in the stadium. More than 30,000 people share the campus, PMS 631 so it’s best to just walk your bike through here. CU has more than 10,000 spaces to park your bike on campus. Bottom line, there are two types of CU students, those who have gotten into bicycle/longboard accidents and those who will.

Wardenburg Health Center: Free condoms Wardenburg is where students go to get prescriptions filled, to get their coughs checked and to receive psychological counseling, but if nothing’s wrong, students come here for a wicker basket on the receptionist’s desk, which is full of free condoms. Sir Richard’s, a local condom company, occasionally hands out free ones on Norlin Quad, and sometimes students in the dorms find them mysteriously slipped under the doors, but Wardenburg and the Community Health office in the University Memorial Center (UMC) are the two permanent locations where they’re free.

Students can also buy condoms at the CU Bookstore in the University Memorial Center, the Emporium at Farrand Hall, Zellar’s Market in Sewall Hall, UMC 1st floor restrooms, recreation center lockers and in bathrooms at Williams Village.

It is NOT cool to wear your lanyard that shows off your student I.D. card.You might as well hold a sign that says “freshman.”

Having really good friends in a fraternity gets you all the benefits of being in a fraternity without the pain and effort of actually joining.

Take advantage of all the free events on campus.You can learn a lot, and some of them can be fun.

Go to the planetarium once, and only once, as a freshman.

If you want to find a job that will make you a lot of money, do some research. Googling “top 10 most in demand jobs in the next 10 years” is a good way to start, and you’ll be

surprised what comes up.

Once you find your major, find an internship. It will put you miles ahead of everyone else.

Don’t be afraid to take a year off if you have a good reason/plan. CU makes it easy to do so.

Focus on building skills. Employers don’t care about good grades; they care about what you can do. With that said, prestigious internships usually require a 3.0 or better, which is easy to do.

You can only do two of the three following things at once: get good grades, party or get a job. If you try all three, you’ll soon find out you’re stretched too thin.

Don’t ruin your GPA your freshman year. Classes are easy and take advantage of that while you can.

Getting a house with 10 best friends, or even one best friend, isn’t as fun as you imagine.

University offers tools to improve student safety

art of the beauty of living on and around a college campus like the University of Colorado Boulder’s is the sense of community it builds. That newness, the feeling of being alone you might experience upon first stepping foot on campus will wear off quickly.

You’ll run into your newfound friends and professors on your way to class, in the library, while eating lunch or working out. But don’t let all the warm-and-fuzzies give you a false sense of security. You still need to watch your back, even in beautiful Boulder.

“Use common sense,” is the simplest advice Ryan Huff, CU University Police spokesman has to offer. But every year, he says, his office receives reports of laptops stolen while their owners were in the bathroom and of break-ins on 56 August 22, 2013

The university hopes to arm students with the tools necessary to keep themselves and their belongings safe with property-registration programs, emergency phones on campus and a night-time shuttle service. It’s just up to the students to take advantage of what’s available.

“The most common crime we deal with on campus is theft, and the most common items that get stolen are bikes and electronics. They’re usually stolen because it’s easy for the criminal to do it,” Huff says. “Don’t create crimes of opportunity.”

The easiest things students can do to prevent their valuables from being stolen is to keep them in view or lock them up — for bikes, U-locks are better deterrents than cable locks, Huff says. As a second

line of defense, students are encouraged to register their bikes and laptops. That way, if they are stolen and recovered, the university police will be able to return them.

The campus sees few violent offenses like assaults or rapes, Huff says. In 2011, the latest year for which statistics are available, there were six reported rapes, five robberies, eight assaults and 42 burglaries.

“Of course, on a university campus, students are going to want to experiment with things like alcohol.

My best advice is just to be smart about it,” Huff explains. “Of the few sexual assaults that occur every year, two factors are common: one is that the suspect and victim know each other — stranger assaults are very rare — and the second is that either the victim or suspect or both have had alcohol that night. When you drink alcohol, your judgment can be impaired. Know who you are with and make sure you’re watching out for each other.”

Students can help keep themselves — and their friends — safe by taking advantage of CU NightRide, which is run out of the University Memorial Center. After the sun goes down, NightRide, which

will add a seventh car to its fleet this fall, will pick up students and faculty anywhere within Boulder city limits and all you need is your Buff card; the ride is free. In addition to taking students and faculty home after a night class or study group, NightRide will also pick up from off-campus restaurants and bars.

“I’ve had a lot of people in my car that have said I’ve helped prevent them from driving home drunk,” says Stephanie Svensson, a senior communications major who drives and dispatches for NightRide.

“So we’re also keeping students safe that way.”

Students should call 911 if they feel they are in danger, and blue-light phones scattered around campus link the caller directly to the University Police dispatcher. Collegify your phone Putting the university in the palm of your hand

ou may have a smart phone, but these mobile-specific apps and campus services will make yours a smarter phone for a student.

For navigating the Boulder labyrinth There’s no recess in college, but CU students still hop, skip and jump everyday. Beeline RTD 2 (iOS) helps you take advantage of your all-access student bus pass — a more than $1,400 value paid for by your student fees. This app is the equivalent of carrying dozens of those bulky bus-schedule brochures in your pocket. Most app complaints concern not updating soon enough when RTD adjusts their schedules — as if buses were ever precisely on time. But, the majority reviews echo app user “Savvy Sarah Jane,” who says it’s “super handy for regular bus riders.” A legitimate drawback to this app is that it doesn’t have a trip advisor feature built in, so it’s not great for figuring out which line will take you from the Hill to 29th Street Mall.

Google Maps (iOS, Android, Windows) is much better for this, and Google Maps stays up-to-date on the bus schedules. But with schedule data for all bus routes and a map that locates the nearest bus stops, Beeline RTD 2 is great for figuring out which bus to take to your 8 a.m. class and when that bus

comes again when you’ve pressed the snooze button on your alarm clock one too many times.

For getting around a foreign language If you are polishing your Spanish before studying abroad, an International Affairs major required to learn a foreign language or an out-of-state freshman missing your Minimum Academic Preparation Standards (MAPS) requirement in foreign language, leave the bulky phrase book on the shelf and download Word Lens (iOS, Android). This augmented reality app works like magic. It translates words right on your screen using the phone’s built-in camera. Hold your phone over the phrase to see words in Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian or French instantly translated into English on the screen, or vice versa.

Just keep it in your pocket on exam day.

For connecting to the Matrix The Office of Information Technology (OIT) has a sweet suite of services for putting the school’s resources literally at your fingertips, whether you have an iPhone, Android or even a Windows phone, and without having to download any apps. The

smartest? Being able to send and receive CULink e-mail on your mobile device’s native email program. It’s easier than it sounds.You can stop by the OIT building or the Norlin Library Help Desk to have this set up for you, there are also instructions online that are easy-to-follow — even if you’re not a computer science major.

Once you can send messages from your @ colorado.edu address on your phone, you can also print on any of more than 100 campus printers with it. OIT spokesman Greg Stauffer says he’d love to be able to say that they pioneered mobile printing on college campuses, but California State and Georgetown University already have a wireless printing solution. However, CU’s Mobile Printing Pilot Program, which launched this summer, is much simpler. Attach your essay or spreadsheet to an email, send it to colorprinting@ colorado or bwprinting@colorado.edu (for color or black and white printing, respectively) address and the job will be in any printer on campus for you. Just swipe your student ID and print within 24 hours of sending that email.

Getting involved at CU

Finding a smaller community within the larger one

xploring a new world is always daunting. And, in a way, attending a large school like the University of Colorado Boulder is similar to navigating a new world — one with uncharted territories and a whole host of alien counterparts.

But according to Jon Tsudo, director of the Student Organization Finance Office at CU, joining a student group will combat some of the unfamiliarity and vastness of a new place and help create a smaller community within the larger one and enhance classroom learning experiences.

“We’ve got hundreds of student groups who are currently operating,” he says. “For many of our students, some of these student organizations tie directly into their academics, so there is a direct correlation there.”

And, according to Lauren Brunetti, who is a front desk employee at SOFO, getting involved will augment a student’s college experience.

“I definitely think the more you get involved, the more you’ll get out of your education,” Brunetti says.

“Getting involved will open up so

many different doors. It will help with meeting people and getting internships.”

This seems to be true at any university, however, at CU the vast campus adds incentive to get involved in smaller and more intimate student organizations.

“I think being at such a big university, you will have more a sense of belonging if you do get involved,” Brunetti says.

Many of the groups, like Bocce Ball Club, exist purely for the enjoyment of group members.

“For many other students, they find that an extracurricular activity with a student organization helps them to broaden their teamwork and leadership skills and opens another avenue to meet people,” says Tsudo.

And according to Tsudo and Brunetti, new student organizations, both independent and affiliated with CU, are formed every year. According to Tsudo, students are encouraged to establish student groups they feel are missing on campus.

“We have had 12 affiliated student groups open since January this year and then independent student

The Student Organization Finance Office categorizes organizations by interest, including groups in categories for academics, graduate level organizations, Greek sorority, Greek fraternity, honor society, sports, political, religious, service, international, different ethnic student groups, student groups with a special interest and diverse student groups, which include organizations focusing on multiculturalism and sexual orientation. Some of the many opportunities at CU are broken down below.

Music, film, media and entertainment Radio 1190 is CU’s student-run radio station. Students can volunteer as DJs or participate in the Street Team.

Program Council hosts free or low-cost entertainment for students like concerts, sneak peeks of movies not yet in theaters and comedy shows. The Friday Night Film series provides free movies for students every Friday.

The CU Independent is the online student newspaper, whose goal, according to its website, is to offer a voice for all members of the CU community, provide relevant news and give accurate information. Students interested in joining can apply online.

For independent, foreign and arthouse film junkies, the International Film Series screens more than 100 films per year and offers a student discount, according to its website.

Sports and outdoors Set below the scenic Flatirons, CU provides a wealth of outdoor and sporting opportunities.

Community service, internships or leadership One way to get involved is to join CU’s student government, University of Colorado Student Government (CUSG). Incoming students can join the Freshman Class Council, the Diversity Commission, or one of the joint boards (Rec Board, E-Center, Health Board, UMC Board and Finance Board).

CU GOLD (Gaining Opportunities through Leadership Development) is an organization that provides free leadership resources to CU students to help them become

better leaders.

According to its website, the Volunteer Resource Center can offer community service opportunities or catalyze participation in Alternative Breaks, a group the helps students learn about social and environmental justice issues faced by members of diverse communities through education, direct service and reflection.

Career Services aids students in finding internships during their time at CU and prepares them for a career after graduation.

Diversity Paid and volunteer opportunities for students can be found at the Advocacy Centers. They also offer a safe space, resources, work with various affiliated students groups and sponsor many events. All centers are open and welcome to anyone on campus.

These centers include the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center, Women’s Resource Center, SORCE, Community Health, Disability Services, Center for Multicultural Affairs and Dennis Small Cultural Center. The DSCC sponsors free programming like films, forums, cooking, dance and art classes that celebrate many cultures, and also provides a safe space for underrepresented student groups, according to its website.

There are many other active student groups related to cultural and ethnic identity on campus, including Black Student Alliance, Chinese Student Association, Persian Student Alliance, Saudi Student Association, Hillel and others.

Students can also get an idea of more possibilities by attending the Student Organization Fair and the Volunteer Fair. Both will provide the opportunity to meet with dozens of student groups, departments and community organizations.

The fall 2013 Student Involvement Fair will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The fair will be held outside the University Memorial Center in the fountain and arcade areas.

ou’ve seen it in just about every movie about college you’ve ever seen — the cliché slacker dude who sails through his classes without cracking a book or waking up for lab. Then there are the stoners who fail their classes because they’re too busy taking bong rips to remember how to string a sentence together. What’s the third option, in Hollywood’s version of college? The bookworm who aces everything but only because he or she forewent having fun or making friends in favor of the library.

Believe it or not, college is not exactly what the movies crack it up to be. You can do well in your courses and join a fraternity. Likewise, you can run track while dating and still finding time to write research papers and study for exams.

How is it done, you ask? Lots and lots of coffee. Oh, and a little

help from academic advisers, RAs, professors and tutors. They know you’re trying to find your way, and when you see yourself struggling to write that English essay or to understand complex equations in calculus, they’re there to help. Really.

Because doing well in school is the whole reason you’re here in the first place, right?

“The transition from high school to college can be an incredibly exciting but often overwhelming experience,” says Lelei Finau-Starkey, first-year experience coordinator and open option adviser in CU Boulder’s College of Engineering and Applied Science. “It’s perfectly normal to need help in a class, feel like you don’t fit in and wonder what you’re even doing here.”

The how and why of CU student government

Y

ou’re in the big leagues now. The classes are bigger, the books are bigger and so is the amount of money that flies around your campus. So who is in charge of those student fees that could make your wallet a winner on The Biggest Loser? The University of Colorado Student Government.

No longer is the prom theme the most important decision those who represent you make. The CUSG controls $24 million, the largest budget of any student government in the country, according to its website.

So they control a lot of money, but how do they work?

Just like the United States government, CUSG is divided in to three branches: executive, judicial and legislative.

The legislative branch is divided into two houses, similar to the House of Representatives and the Senate.The Council of Colleges and Representatives Council are responsible for voting on budgets, ratifying and removing council members and allocating funds.

The legislative groups also may override any decision made by the executive branch with a 2/3 majority.

Made up of seven executively appointed members, the judiciary branch of CUSG is responsible for all matters of interpretation of the CU constitution. The decisions made by the judicial branch are final and apply to all parties involved with the issue.

Usually issues that the judicial branch works with revolve around breaches of student conduct.

Finally, we have the executive branch. This branch differs the most from any other traditional government entity. Instead of having one person in charge, CUSG uses what is called a “tri-executive” system. The executive branch consists of three

individuals who run on the same party platform. One person serves as president, while the other two serve as vice presidents, with one handling internal affairs while the other handles external affairs.

Sounds simple, right? Don’t jump to conclusions. The most recent elections in April 2013 did not end with a clear winner until all of the votes were counted, unlike the political big leagues, when one candidate removes his name once it is clear he is out.

The online polling conducted through MyCUInfo, revealed one of the closest elections ever.

Although the percentages revealed a 50-50 split, the final vote count ended with a 3,354-3,332 victory for the UNITE party, according to CUSG’s website. Both the College Democrats and College Republicans, two of the most prominent student organizations on campus, endorsed the INSPIRE party.

So is CUSG right for you? Although you are unable to become a paid staff member as a freshman, CUSG allows first year students to work part-time, often with upperclassmen as advisors. From there, students may run for legislative and executive positions.

Student involvement with CUSG has been low recently, despite the April turnout rising above the 15-20 percent reported to CUSG by other schools. Twenty-four percent of students voted in the spring elections, according to official election results.

Be prepared. Come April, there will be representatives from each party all over campus trying to get your vote.You can vote with them, or you can vote in the comfort of your own home.You can vote for all of the candidates, or you can not give any of the candidates your vote. But whatever you do, be an informed student.
