t’s hard to believe we’re nearing the end of the summer, but here we are. August rolls around fast each year, bringing with it a new school year with exciting adventures and challenges to face. But this isn’t just any school year — this is your first year of college.

You already know how magical Boulder is, nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, just a hop, skip and a jump away from all the hiking, biking, climbing and outdoor play a person could want. And you already know that you’ve picked a great school that has fostered five Nobel Laureates, among a plethora of other accolades.

All of these are reasons why Boulder will be your home for the next few years.

It’s an exciting time in your life, but we don’t have to tell you that. What we want to tell you is that it’s OK to be a little nervous, too. There are a lot of unknowns: what it will feel like to take a class with 300 other people, or if you’ll be able to handle intro chemistry and living with a stranger in your new 250-square foot room. All of that on top of trying to decide what you want to do “for the rest of your life.”

We get it. We’ve been there, and we’re here to tell you that you’re going to make it. There will be tough days, but it’s nothing you can’t handle.

We write Student Guide to help you not only navigate your new town, but this new chapter in your life. We hope you’ll use this guide to find places to meet like-minded people and explore opportunities to lend a hand to causes you feel passionately about.

We’ve included guides for academic resources, maps to important places in town, events to help you burn off some steam and some tips for ways to get involved and make a difference.

So relax. Finish organizing your dorm room (tip: prop the door open and make a new friend or two) and then kick back for a while with Student Guide. We hope you’ll find some advice within these pages that will help you start your college career off right.

Alferd Packer Restaurant & Grill — Wondering if your university has a sense of humor? Well stroll on over to the University Memorial Center and order up a juicy roast beef sandwich at the Alferd Packer Restaurant & Grill, and you’ll have your answer. As far as we know, this is the only eating establishment in the country named for a cannibal. The short version goes like this: Packer and a few other hardy souls headed west in wagons. It snowed. They got stuck in the mountains. Everybody died. Packer managed to put on a few pounds. How’s that sandwich?

Appelbaum, Matt — The mayor of our fine city since 2011. Cool fact: In July 2015, Mayor Appelbaum traveled to Vatican City to attend a two-day conference on climate change convened

by Pope Francis.

Atomic clock — What time is it? If you really want to be accurate, check out the atomic clock at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) at 325 Broadway. Boulder actually sets the time for the entire world. NIST makes for an interesting tour.

Eldora Mountain Resort — So you wake up, look out your window, and see that 2 feet of fresh powder has fallen overnight.

What do you do? Find somebody with all-wheel drive and head 21 miles straight up Boulder Canyon until you arrive at Eldora Mountain Resort.

While not big by Colorado standards — they’d hold the Olympics there if it were in the Northeast — it’s a great place to test your skills after a winter storm.

Emergency Warning Sirens — One day, out of nowhere, a voice will cry out to the city, “This is a warning system test,” followed by a sound that will make it clear the zombie apocalypse is neigh. Don’t panic — it’s really just a test.

This is Boulder’s Emergency Warning Siren, there to give us all a heads up when things like floods or wildfires threaten our beautiful valley. The voice will make sure it’s clear when it’s not a test.

Bag fee — You may have heard that Boulder is pretty serious about addressing environmental issues — take disposable bags, for instance. In 2013, the city voted to charge $.10 per bag at grocery stores. The store keeps four cents of the fee and the remaining six cents goes to the City of Boulder to address the impacts of disposable bags in our community.

Bioneers — An international gathering of folks who want to develop practical solutions for restoring the planet — and there are local chapters, like the Front Range Bioneers. The Front Range Bioneers will gather for their annual conference at the Humanities Building at CU on Oct. 23-25, 2015.

Boulder International Film Festival — Boulder is home to the Boulder International Film Festival (BIFF), which takes place every February.Venues all over town are turned into screening rooms, and the stars show up to discuss their creative work.You will want to attend, trust us.

Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art — Visit the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA) for a dose of something out of the ordinary. The museum is located at 1750 13th St.

Cannabis — see “Dope” CU Independent — CU’s online studentrun newspaper. To all our fellow newshounds out there, here’s your chance to cut your journalistic chops.

Conference on World Affairs — The Conference on World Affairs, held in April each year, is a highlight for the entire Boulder community. It’s a global conversation wherein everyone, including you, can participate.

Students can volunteer or just sit in on the sessions like everyone else. In a nutshell, the conference is comprised of smart famous people discussing creative and important topics with whoever shows up and there is no charge. It’s the best thing in April.

Cruiser rides — On most Thursday evenings, you can join a jovial group of cyclists in an informal ride through town, yelling, “Happy Thursday!” to all you pass.

Dairy Center for the Arts — If you find yourself in need of film, not to be confused with a Hollywood movie made from a comic book or a 1970’s cartoon series, we can recommend just the place.

Wander on over to the Dairy Center for the Arts (2590 Walnut St.).You’ll find several galleries and live performaces as well as the Boedecker Theater, which tends to show great films worthy of your investment of time.

Drop/Add — Dates you need to know lest you find yourself missing a crucial class, or inversely, in way over your head.

Dushanbe Tea House —The tea house was a gift from one of Boulder’s sister cities, Dushanbe, Tajikistan, and it is truly an architectural wonder as well as a great place to drink tea or eat a fine meal.

Dope — see “Reefer”

Farmers’ Market — This is that place where you go when you want to eat healthy, when your body begins to rebel against all of the Twinkies, beer and ramen you have poured down your gullet. Open Saturdays April to November, and Wednesdays May to October.

Flatirons — You know, those cool-looking rock slabs on the mountain behind you. Despite it being everyone’s favorite mistake, these aren’t actually advisable territory for hiking after consuming alcoholic beverages or psychedelic drugs. Keep yourself safely on your couch at that point. Being embarrassed by having to be rescued off of one of these things is actually the best outcome you can hope for if you start walking up the rock without the proper gear or training.

Fringe Festival — This off-beat event has something for everyone: live theater, dance, circus art, media art, cinema, visual art, spoken word, puppetry, workshops and storytelling. It will be held Sept. 16-27 at various locations around downtown Boulder. And by various locations, we mean performances could go down in the back of a taxi or in a large cardboard box.

GLBTQIA — Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer, Intersex and Allied.

Join the friendly alphabet. Local resources include the GLBTQ Resource Center on campus at the Center for Community and Out Boulder (with a Pridehouse Community Center at 2132 14th St., Boulder).

Grades — Worth a little stress, but not an ulcer.

Find a balance.

Heritage Center — Upstairs in Old Main, one of the oldest buildings on campus, the CU museum houses memorabilia of the institution’s history, which includes moon rocks, championship trophies, even Glenn Miller’s trombone.

The Hill — See map. A place where you can find a number of establishments at which to eat, drink and be merry (or get a tan or a Brazilian wax).

showcases Boulder-centric history and history of particular interest to the average Boulderite (think: exhibitions dedicated to the history of beer, and to the evolution of active wear).

Heil & Hall — These two former ranches are now home to great hiking and mountain biking trails just north of town.

Involvement Week — Want to do something meaningful with your time in college? Good idea. Get involved, from student media to student government, there’s no reason to spend every weekend drinking and slacklining.

See page 56 for ideas on how.

International Film Series — College is a time for educating yourself on the ways of the world, and film can be a great way to say “Hello” to a corner of the planet you don’t yet know. This film series showcases both classics on celluloid and cutting edge contemporary films.

Individual attention — Don’t get lost in the sea of students at CU. Use your professor’s office hours for conversations and questions about the material you’re covering both as a way to boost your grades and get some quality feedback.

Internships — What you learn in classes is a great foundation for your future career, but the door to everything else begins with some work experience, the likes of which you’ll only get by, well, working somewhere. Sign up for some real-world experience with an internship and take your field of choice out for a test drive before it’s the only thing you’re qualified to do.

Ironman — Yes, people in Boulder really do pay to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and then run 26.2 miles.

Jam bands — How do you know you’re listening to a jam band? Well, if it seems like you’re still listening to the same song you were 20 minutes ago… you’ve probably found one.

Check out NedFest for your fill.

Jewish Festival — This one-day event features entertainment, art, ethnic food and community organizations. Next scheduled for June 19, 2016, on the Boulder County Courthouse Lawn and Pearl Street Mall.

KBCO — The formerly local radio station where rock bands in skinny jeans play live in-studio so you can later buy Live From Studio C compilations every December.

KGNU — Local. Independent. Baller.

Kind — Slang term for your girlfriend “Mary Wanna,” aka, “the devil’s weed,” aka, your research project for your botany minor, aka, what you will probably spend that money your parents sent you to donate to KGNU on instead.

Kinetic Sculpture Race — Kind of like that time in high school you ducttaped a couch to a skateboard and raced it against a recliner on a shopping cart, except, you know, legit. Annually, mad scientists build human-powered sculptures capable of traveling on land and sea and then race them at Union Reservoir in Longmont. Wear a heltmet.

KUVO — The radio station you claim to listen to when trying to appear more sophisticated than the average KBCO-listening knuckle-dragger to your date, or when you have researched a little too much “kind.” Why? Cause it’s all jazz, baby.

L-towns — Boulder’s neighbors, Longmont, Louisville, Lafayette, and Lyons. They’re EVERYWHERE. (Note:Very different from eTown.)

Left Right Tim — Need to learn to think on your feet to explain why you missed yet another deadline on your research paper? CU’s improv comedy group may be just the inspiration you need.

Every Friday of the school year, Left Right Tim can be found performing in Room 270 of the Hale Science Building on the CU Boulder Campus.

Marijuana — A great way to make friends, forget lab assignments and discover a unified theory of physics in your morning cereal. See Cheech and Chong, or that smell coming from you art teacher’s office.

Microbrews — Beers that are served without ping-pong balls floating in them.

MIP — Unlike an MVP or VIP, a Minor in Possession title wins you no accolades, and it might leave you with a criminal record.

Mountains — Large mounds of dirt on which you can hike, bike or climb to decrease the likelihood of getting a MIP. Also, a majestically scenic backdrop to our lovely community that will provide you a multitude of outdoor recreation activities blah blah blah.

Naropa — The “that school of yours” in the phrase “Is that what they teach in that school of yours?”

Founded in 1974 by a Tibetan Buddhist teacher. It’s liberal.

National Centers — While you may have come to CU Boulder for the cheap weed and hula-hooping, a lot of your professors came for the plethora of major research laboratories located in Boulder. The National Center for Atmospheric Reseach (NCAR), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), are all here. Boulder is also home to some of the premiere research in hacky-sacking, but it isn’t an official national center.

Ned — The thing you’re allowed to call nearby Nederland once you’ve been formerly introduced to the mountain community by visiting one of its music festivals or Colorado’s weirdest city-event, Frozen Dead Guy Days. Until then, you have to call it Mr. Nederland.

[O]

OSMP (Open Space Management and Mountain Parks)— Government agency that is tasked with managing Boulder’s trails and open spaces, primarily by ticketing you for littering or walking your dog off-leash. So don’t do those things. The OSMP website has loads of helpful maps of places not to walk your dog off-leash.

Old Main — The first building constructed on the CU campus in 1876. It housed the university president, a library, classrooms and the start of a science lab.

Our Lord and Savior — See “Elway, John.”

Out Boulder — Advocacy and guidance group for the local LGBTQ community. Stages events like queer youth cabaret. Drop-in services and a resource library available at The Pridehouse at 2132 14th St., in downtown Boulder from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. on Tuesday through Friday.

Pearl Street Mall — Downtown Boulder’s celebrated shopping district, replete with locally owned businesses as well as some corporate outlets. It’s also got good restaurants, live music and street performances that just might make you say, “I don’t think that child should be standing so close to that.”

Planetarium — The Fiske Planetarium recently underwent a huge upgrade, including new lenses and projectors that make the dome an “immersive theater” that fills a full 360 degree view with videos of travel, astronomy, music and lasers. It’s where Galileo and Led Zeppelin meet back on the other side.

Planet Bluegrass — This outdoor music venue in Lyons really does feel like a different planet when it fills up for its eco-friendly music festivals showcasing the best in bluegrass and folk music to be found anywhere in the country.

While most of the action happens in the summer months, the concert series at the Wildflower Pavilion indoor facility at Planet Bluegrass extends the season to spring and fall.

Polar Bear Plunge — Hundreds of people jump into the frigid waters of Boulder Reservoir on Jan. 1 each year for the annual polar bear plunge. It’s all in the name of raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Quaker Friends House — The Boulder Friends Meetinghouse started in the 1950s with an ad in the paper for a home gathering of people interested in attending a Quaker Meeting for Worship — a fundamental tenet of that religion being that a church is the people and not the building. People still gather at the local meetinghouse for worship, where they offer education classes on Quakerism and all the Oat Squares you can eat.

Queer Initiative — A politically active student group highlighting issues facing the GLBTQIA community. If fighting for gay rights is a priority for you, look for the group’s events around campus.

Quiet — What you’ll go to Norlin Library to seek, and sometimes fail to find.

Ralphie — Just the baddest mascot in the country. CU has a real buffalo running around Folsom Field during home football games, manned by a dozen of your peers, called Ralphie Runners.

Reefer — see “Weed” Rockpile — Coors Field is a beautiful baseball stadium, and the Rockpile is the cheapest way to enjoy it. Sure, the players might look like ants from the nosebleeds, but everyone in Colorado knows the Rockpile has the best atmosphere of anywhere in the stadium.

Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center — The RMPJC was created by individuals who had been involved in the peaceful protests against the Rocky Flats nuclear bomb plant (now a wildlife preserve found just east of Highway 93 south of Boulder). The center continues to organize with members and network organizations to address environmental and social justice issues. Rockin’ Betty’s Community Thrift Store benefits the center.

RTD — This company operates the buses that will take you around town if you can’t afford a car or can’t afford legs to pedal your bike. Also, the buses are free with your student ID, so start studying those schedules.

Safe Sex — Hopefully your mom or dad has sat you down in that room in your house that has nice furniture but no one ever sits in unless there’s company over and talked to you about s-e-x, but here’s some basics. Zero waste — Something CU takes pretty seriously. “Ralphie’s Green Stampede” is an initiative to create a zero waste football stadium. The university was the first major collegiate or professional sports program in the U.S. to undertake such a measure. Dorms and businesses around Boulder offer recycling and composting, so read the signs about what you can and can’t throw in each bin.

Ziplining — Go down a mountain really fast even in the summertime. Ski resorts around Colorado are getting in on the ziplining craze. Check out courses in Vail, Salida and Leadville.

JAMESTOWN MERCANTILE

LATE NIGHT When it’s 1:30 a.m. and the late night study session is ending, there are only a few places still open to satisfy that studious hunger: Illegal Pete’s serves up Mexican food until 2:30 a.m., and The Sink serves its American-style food until 2 a.m.

Third season’s the charm for MacIntyre?

N

ine losing seasons can wear on the most faithful of fan bases. That’s why Head Coach Mike MacIntyre, who enters his third season in Boulder, must find a way to produce more than just moral victories this fall.

After going 4-8 in 2013, MacIntyre and the Buffaloes mustered just two wins last fall. Despite winning half the number of games in MacIntyre’s second season as the team did in his debut campaign, there are several statistics that suggest the Buffs were actually a much better football team in 2014.

Led by quarterback Sefo Liufau, Colorado moved the ball at will to the tune of nearly 440 yards a game in 2014. The number was good enough to earn the Buffaloes a respectable eighth place in total offense among the Pac-12 — a conference that is home to a handful of offensive juggernauts. That is a noticeable improvement from 2013 when Colorado finished dead last in the Pac-12 with just 370 yards per contest.

On the other side of the ball, the silver and gold finished 11th in total defense in 2014 for the second consecutive season, but did show progress by yielding less points and yardage last fall than they did in the previous season. So, while the moral victories heavily outweighed the Ws, all indications hint the Buffs are heading in the right direction.

Not surprisingly, the team’s overall improvement will depend on the individual development of Liufau.

Now a junior, the signal caller from Tacoma, Washington. is coming off a season in which he broke 51 records, including pass yards (3,200) and touchdowns (28) in a single season.

The accolades are certainly piling for Liufau under Offensive Coordinator Brian Lindgren’s pass-happy attack, but so are the interceptions. His 12

Men’s basketball 2016 preview: Out with the old, in with the new

M

easuring 6 feet 10 inches, center/ forward Josh Scott is the tallest person on the Colorado Buffaloes men’s basketball team roster. But the senior will be the Buffaloes’ biggest piece in more ways than one this season, as roster turnover and a disappointing 16-18 record in the 2014-15 campaign leave Buff fans hoping Scott will shoulder the load and help the program rebound from the worst season in head coach Tad Boyle’s five-year tenure.

While technically the Buffaloes’ participation in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) counts as a fifth-straight postseason appearance for Colorado, you’d be hard pressed to find a die-hard fan who considers that a legitimate continuation of the postseason streak that features three trips to the NCAA Tournament and one NIT (National Invitation Tournament) appearance. Last season saw Boyle’s Buffaloes mired in the third-tier CBI, a fitting landing spot for a Colorado team who had a 2-11 away record and finished ninth in the Pac-12 with a 7-11 conference record.

The graduation of point guard Askia Booker, who was the first Colorado player to ever appear in three consecutive NCAA Tournaments, leaves a statistical hole in the form of his team-leading 17 points-per-game, in addition to his abdication from his role as the team’s primary ball handler. But while Booker’s loss was expected, the Buffaloes will also have to rebound from the loss of senior guard Xavier Johnson for the majority of the season after he suffered a torn left Achilles tendon in summer workouts, along with the transfers of juniors Dustin Thomas and Jaron Hopkins.

These losses will leave this year’s Colorado team devoid of many of the familiar faces of recent years. But Boyle is hoping that what the Buffaloes will lack in familiarity, they will make up for with new talent and a returning group of players eager to make the most of the opportunities presented to them by the roster shakeup.

Headlining the group of Buffaloes new to the 2015-16 team is redshirt junior Josh Fortune, who spent his redshirt year practicing with CU after transferring to Colorado from Providence. Fortune was a starter and key member of the Providence team that won the 2014 Big East Tournament, and will provide depth in skills such as ball handling and 3-point shooting that last year’s CU team severely lacked.

Women’s basketball preview: Young roster will be forced to learn on the fly

O

nly two players remain from the CU women’s basketball team’s last appearance in the NCAA tournament. That 2013 postseason feels like a distant memory for Colorado; in the two seasons since Chucky Jeffery (now of the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream) led Colorado to a fifth seed in the NCAA Tournament, the Buffaloes have gone from Pac-12 powerhouse to a sub-.500 squad in 2014-15, dwelling in the bottom half of the rankings, unable to manage an invitation to the Women’s Postseason National Invitation Tournament.

For Colorado to find success this season, it will all start with those aforementioned holdovers from 2013, senior forward Jamee Swan and junior guard Lauren Huggins (Huggins redshirted the 2012-13 season due to a stress fracture in her right leg).

Swan led Colorado in points and rebounds per game last season, at 13.2 and 7.9 respectively, and will unquestionably be Colorado’s most important player next season. Swan is animated and engaged on the court, traits that will make her a good leader and exemplar for this young team where every bit of leadership and experience will be valued.

Huggins, a sharpshooter who made 38.4 percent of her 3-point shots last season, came off the bench to score 4.5 points per game last season.

While it remains to be seen whether she will break into the starting lineup this season, Huggins will play substantial minutes and provide some of the Pac-12’s premier long-range shooting.

A fixture in the starting lineup alongside Swan will be junior forward Haley Smith. SKIING Colorado’s skiing team continues to add to the university’s trophy case.

This past March, the Buffs earned CU its 20th National Championship overall, and it was the eighth such accomplishment since the NCAA sport became co-ed in 1983.

The Buffs third National title in five years was a total team effort.

Both the men and women placed second in their fields, giving the overall squad a first place ranking at the Championships. Furthermore, 10 of the 12 skiers from the NCAA Finals will boot-up again for the Buffs this coming winter, making a repeat title an obtainable goal.

SOCCER Following a 6-4-1 Pac-12 record, Colorado’s women’s soccer team reached the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season. At Nationals, the Buffs shutout Brigham Young University 2-0 in the opening round. A date with North Carolina would be Colorado’s final match of the season, as the Tar Heels squeaked out a 1-0 victory.

Head Coach Danny Sanchez, in his fourth season, has to be pleased with the student athletes he has coming back to play for him. Two of the team’s top-3 goal scorers return in Brie Hooks and Kahlia Hogg. Behind them, Mikaela Kraus and Olivia Pappalardo will be back in the midfield after combining total of 40 games last season. Also, Kate Scheele is set to protect the net as the team’s primary goalie after recording an impressive .821 save percentage in 2014.

TRACK AND FIELD Seven men and women on the Colorado track and field team raced their way to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Among the seven distance runners to reach Nationals, two earned All-American recognition. After placing fifth at the NCAA Championships in the 10,000-meter run, Pierce Murphy was deemed elite with his All-American honor. The same can be said for speedster Sara Sutherland. The 1,500-meter star took third place in her event to garner the national spotlight at the Championships.

The Buffaloes were even more successful off the track last year. A jaw-dropping 21 student athletes —

11 women and 10 men — received Pac-12 All-Academic honors for their hard work in the classroom.

VOLLEYBALL After posting sub-.500 records in her first four seasons running the women’s volleyball program at CU, Head Coach Liz Kritza seems to have found her groove in Boulder. In 2013 the Buffs broke through to win 18 games and reach the NCAA Tournament. This past fall Colorado pushed its win total to 20 — its highest since 2003 — and once again reached the NCAA Tournament. After handling Northern Colorado in its opening round match, the Buffs dropped a 5-set heartbreaker to rival Colorado State to close the season.

And senior Taylor Simpson made history after the 2014 season as the first Buff to be named First Team All-American. Kritza will have to find a way to guide Colorado to yet another NCAA tournament without Simpson, who has since graduated.

Fortunately, Simpson’s younger sisters, Cierra and Gabby, are still in the program. In addition, senior outside hitter Alexis Austin returns after finishing second on the team in kills.

On a positive note, Colorado only lost one player, Ashley Tiefel, to graduation. With an understanding of just how ferocious their Pac-12 opponents can be, the six returning players should be inspired to carve out a winning culture at CU.

Ahaneku is leading a zero-waste initiative this year that will increase communication between departments across CU that are vested in sustainability, she says. This will help facilitate the City of Boulder’s goal of diverting 85 percent of non-reusable material from landfills by 2017.

Another campaign Ahaneku is heading this fall aims to make students more aware of meningitis B, a strain of meningitis that has led to epidemics across some universities in the U.S. Due to a push from the student government, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recently voted to recommend the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) newly approved vaccine against the strain to all students entering their first year at CU. “My hope is that as we raise awareness and as the CDC sees how the vaccines that are approved right now work and evaluates the risks and potential benefits of the vaccinations that we can move towards a more widespread recommendation,” Ahaneku says.

Some of the other projects CUSG in 2015/2016 year include cracking down on early pre-leasing (allowing prospective tenants to apply, view the property and sign a lease before the current tenant has vacated the premises); a volunteer event around the 2015 Republican presidential primary debate; and a salutation for the Dalai Lama when he visits CU in October.

But the work of freshmen doesn’t have to end in helping the student government. Freshmen, just like all other fee-paying students, can run for any position in the government’s office, from executive president to court judge.

“If a freshman were to get involved and were to run for executive, if he or she has the support, they could do it,” Soto says, noting plenty of younger presidents have been welcomed in the past.

All students are also able to run for office in their “local” college governments. Most of the university’s student-funded cost centers, like the University Memorial Center and the Recreation Center, operate under CUSG’s student advisory boards that welcome freshmen too.

“We want [students] to get passionate about an issue and then have the knowledge, the tools and the expertise to change that issue,” Soto says.

Students telling CU’s stories

I

f reading Student Guide is making you wish you were one of us, CU offers a variety of options to tell your fellow students what’s what about where they live.

The university has a student-run newspaper, radio station and sports television show, as well as a few classes where students publish stories, produce a news show and shoot documentaries.

CU INDEPENDENT The CU Independent is an online newspaper giving students a taste of what it’s like inside a newsroom. If writing or photography is your thing, the 20 editors on staff will teach you how to do it right.

“It’s an opportunity to write what you want to write before you go out in the world and get told what to do,” says Jordyn Siemens, editor in chief as of fall 2015, in an email. “It’s a place to have fun, express your views and learn some valuable professional skills.”

The staff meets Sunday nights, naturally, since your homework is done and you’re refreshed from a calm weekend, and together you’ll decide what your fellow students need to know for the days ahead.

“Reading the CU Independent as a student is like seeing the campus through your own eyes because our writers are the kids sitting next to you in class, bumping into you at the [Center for Community], or struggling through that midterm with you,” Siemens said.

RADIO 1190 Whether you’re looking to start a career in radio, find new music, or just make some friends, Radio 1190 has your fix. The music-dominant programming has a sprinkling of

talented pianist.

“Get your hands on the field and in the court if you’re really interested in sports,” Kuczkowski says. “But this is your chance to screw up as many times as you want and try a million different things and you get to find out what your passion is.”

You don’t even have to like sports to work for CU Sports Mag — get experience on or off camera with this student produced sports-focused broadcast.

Joining Radio 1190 is the opposite of getting a post-college entry-level position, which require three years experience, four college degrees and the ability to execute a flawless back handspring.

“You don’t have to have skills … skills are taught,” says Mikey Goldenberg, general manager of Radio 1190.

“We don’t expect people to know how to run a radio station.

“I would implore anyone who has interest in this world to look in our direction,” he says.

From button making, to DJing, to running controls, to writing reviews, they’ll send you out with a press pass, or let you hang out and listen to their 25,000-CD library.

“All we want to do it get individuals who are excited about this — ‘this’ is a whole lot of different things — and retain them for a while,” Goldberg says. Stay long enough and

CU SPORTS MAG If you’re just too pretty to hide behind the pen or the radio waves, the video camera will capture your shining face on Sports Mag, the college’s student-run TV show. Despite the name, you don’t have to like sports to join.

Whether you have 10 minutes to spare or you want to engulf yourself with the tight knit dozen or so who stay through the night, the club welcomes you. Laura Kuczkowski, one of the executive producers, says Sports Mag veterans will be teaming up with newcomers to show them the ropes.

“You can do behind the scenes, you can produce the show, you can direct the show, you can run a camera, you can be in front of the camera … if you wanna do it, we will give you the tools,” Kuczkowski says.

Non-sports fans tell stories of the team’s life beyond their sport, including one last year about a basketball player, Eli Stalzer, who is also a

CU NEWS CORPS For those writers, photographers and videographers who are already so talented that your work is practically professional, there’s News Corp, a class where student work often gets published in mainstream media.

“News Corp is an opportunity to produce content for professional media, it’s an opportunity that doesn’t exist the same way anywhere else in the state,” says instructor Jeff Browne.

With a grant from Bill and Kathy Scripps funding the class through 2016, students have the chance to go beyond daily news by researching in-depth, investigative stories that get to the heart of the issues and sometimes require travel in the process. Browne expects the upcoming semester to include trips to Mexico and maybe Cuba for a story about immigration.

“Being able to step back and look deeply into a subject … that’s something that they may not get that much of a chance ever to do again because of the hectic nature of journalism in most places,” Browne says.

Once you’ve taken the class, you’re eligible to keep working and you’ll get paid to do it. Students are currently getting paid for covering the Aurora theater trial. The GLBTQ Resource Center celebrates 20 years

ucked away on the fourth floor of the Center for Community is an office window covered with rainbow flags and a sign that reads, “You Don’t Have to be Out to Come In.” Known as the GLBTQ Resource Center, inside you’ll find books, films, information and a community of people.

This year, the GLBTQ Resource Center rings in its 20th year of making CU’s campus a welcome environment for people of all genders and orientations.

The center’s current director, Scarlet Bowen, says it’s a safe space to come and hang out, with a study area and library.

cause it was used as a closet,” Raforth says. “The director of the counseling center gave us this spot, made sure there was a heater, and installed a jack that we put in a computer and a phone.

We cleared out all the storage. The journalism department gave us a desk, a chair and filing cabinet. And that’s how it got started — in this itty bitty spot” Eventually after help from the community and a fundraising effort to raise $60,000, the center moved into a bigger office, got its first director, Joanna Duenas, and officially opened its doors in 1995.

“That’s when the center leaped out, moved forward and springboarded out of the closet,” she says with a laugh.

Over the years, improvement continued — what Bowen calls a steady stream of progress — with the creations of GLBTQ studies programs, married housing changing to family housing, an alumni chapter, same sex partner benefits, trans health benefits, gender inclusive bathrooms, consistent flow of funding and a nondiscrimination policy.

Twenty years is a good time to reflect on the past and, considering the recent legal milestone, a great time to celebrate.

“On our 20th anniversary, here we are seeing the Supreme Court make it legal across the nation for people of similar genders to get married. That says a lot, you come from legalizing discrimination in 1992, to this historic Supreme Court decision in 2015,” Bowen says.

Obviously, there’s still more to be done.

Bowen says with as many points of intersection in the GLBTQ community across gender, race, class, etc. they are always contentiously thinking about how to include different populations of students. For the future, they want to reach out to international students, increase gender inclusive housing and restrooms, build allies in other the communities such as Greek life and athletics, and continue making CU a supportive campus.

“There’s a lot of room to grow,” Raforth says.

“That’s what the center is about, continuing that education and also to make people feel like they are able to be who they are.”

oing to college is a major step in a person’s life and with all the fun comes challenges. Going to a large university like the University of Colorado Boulder can seem overwhelming when it comes to cultivating the ultimate college experience.

This guide is designed to help you find a community or place that can feel like a new home. Here’s just a sampling of places to get involved on campus.

MUSIC, FILM, MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT For those who are interested in media arts, CU offers a multitude of entertainment niches to participate in or enjoy.

Radio 1190 is the student run radio station that has a good variety of music. Tune in anytime to hear some variety on the dial.

The CU Independent is the universities digital only school paper that is run entirely by students. They accept students from across majors to contribute to the publication. It can be found at cuindependent.com and features the latest in campus news.

Bass Feeds the Soul is a studentrun online publication that capitalizes on the abundant music scene and offers a venue for students to read or write about the music that inspires them.

Students looking for a community to help foster creativity in music or art can look to Boulder Photography Club, Side By Side Dance Company, B Stand-up Comedy Club, Coalition 58 August 20, 2015

for Creative Music, Colorado New Music Ensemble and a list of other groups that focus around music, art and dance. There is no shortage of creative pursuits to enjoy or participate with in Boulder.

SPORTS AND OUTDOORS Boulder is an active place, with skiing, climbing, hiking, biking and more, all within reach. Rest assured there is always something to do outside.

CU has clubs for a variety of outdoor activities and finding people to be active with is as easy as signing up and showing up. Everything from The Backcountry (Ski) Club to the Bhakti Yoga Club to the Skydiving Club is offered at CU. Intramurals are also big at CU. Whether it is hockey, basketball, soccer, flag football or kickball there are various leagues and teams to sign up for. Most leagues play in the rec center and sign ups start soon after classes begin. Make sure to register yourself or a team in time, since there are no late admittances for intramurals.

GREEK LIFE Few institutions have synonymized themselves with the college experience like fraternities and sororities. CU has a highly engaged Greek population that starts its recruitment in September, when students can see the different houses and organizations.

Sororities and fraternities differ mostly in their philanthropic endeavors, with each organization support-

ing a different cause.

Fraternities, unlike sororities, are not directly affiliated with the University and all their recruitment is done off campus.

EMPLOYMENT Getting a job in college not only promotes financial independence, but it can be a great way of meeting new people. There is a wide variety of employment opportunities offered by the University and even more in the surrounding area.

There are jobs posted by CU through the University or other partners to help provide jobs for students, many of which have the convenience of being on campus. Go to www. colorado.edu/studentemployment to find opportunities.

Larger employers like grocery stores, hardware stores and commercial retailers can often be good places to look for employment too, due to the variety of hours they can provide and the consistent need for workers.

Borders (EWB), Foundation for the International Medical Relief for Children (FIMRC) and Association for India’s Development (AID) are just some of the service groups active on campus. Several groups send students all over the world to serve and learn.

DIVERSITY There are a wide range of communities and organizations that celebrate diversity and culture at CU.

POLITICS AND CAUSES For the students who want to strive for an impact on their community or the world as a whole, CU offers various ways to get involved.

Groups like Amnesty International, CU Students Against Modern Day Slavery and Society of Environmental Engineers all work to forward their cause via CU. For the politically minded there are the College Democrats and College Republicans clubs in addition to more specific groups like Students for Hillary, Federalist Society and Young Americans for Liberty.

There are also other specific cause oriented groups like Students for a Sensible Drug Policy,Vegan Justice League, Students for Freedom in North Korea and the Psychedelic Club.

And don’t forget about Student Governement for those who want to make a lasting impact for future students.

COMMUNITY SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP CU is a university that is well established in the service community, facilitating multiple service and relief trips, in addition to fundraising, through their clubs. CU is also one of the top universities for sending people to the Peace Corps.

Active student groups for nonheteronormative or non-gender conforming students provide a safe place for students to commune and discuss, such as Bichorious, Biphoria and the Gay Straight Alliance.

Nationality and region-based student groups exist to meet most demographics. African Student Association, Asian Unity, Chinese Students and Scholars Association, Japanese Students Association (JSA), Jewish Student Association,

Korean American Students at Boulder (KASB), Korean Student Association (KSA), Malaysians at CU, Muslim Student Association (MSA) and the Nepalese Student Association (NSA) are just a few that meet regularly.
