ou’ve got the University of Colorado student handbook, probably. Somewhere.You’ve been given links to the websites and names of people to talk to.

Your siblings have given you advice. So have your parents and teachers. So will your professors, your advisor, your RA and your new friends.

Now, we’d like to add ourselves to that list of sources you go to for information on where to go, what to do, and how to get the most out of the next four (plus or minus) years of your life.

Because while there’s a handbook for campus, there’s not much comparable in the way of a handbook for Boulder.This little town is packed with much to explore, and we’ve done what we can to pare the myriad options down to give you some good ideas for where to get started. Here at Boulder Weekly, we’ve packed this year’s Student Guide with a briefer

on local venues you’ll probably crash into for concerts, a primer on the Buffs’ football season, and enough listings of events that you can always have an excuse for somewhere else to be any time you need to duck out of a study date.

There are some tips and tricks for getting work done and staying safe, too. Hopefully some of that information will be useful to you returning students as well.

Maybe you’ve already heard that the friends you make in these years will be your friends for life.

Consider that the programs you get involved in, the sports you take up and the places you visit will take an equal part in shaping who you become, what career you have, where you eventually live, and how you spend your free time for the rest of your life.

Explore a little, find your place in the world, and use all the opportunities at hand to run toward that bright future.

Alferd Packer: the Musical — A film directed by former CU student Trey Parker of South Park and Team America:World Police fame, Alferd Packer: The Musical, was renamed Cannibal!

The Musical. It tells the meaty story of Alferd Packer, who was accused of eating fellow travelers who’d gotten stranded in the mountains. The film is loosely based on historical fact and a helluva lot of fun. Every CU student should know about Alferd Packer, as his name graces the most popular student eatery on campus.

Boulder Falls — Located 11 miles west of Boulder, on the north side of Boulder Canyon Drive (SR 119) between Boulder and Nederland, the site of Boulder Falls consists of five acres that include a trail and a

Take an easy hike from the parking area just across SR 119 from the Falls, stopping briefly to snap photos at “Picture Rock,” a large donut-style boulder not far from the trailhead. Then hike the trail to get a view of the rushing water. But don’t be stupid and try to climb up to the falls or get into the water above the falls.

People have been killed attempting to do those things. Open dawn to dusk, May 1 through Oct. 31.

is held annually on President’s Day Weekend right here in Boulder. BIFF has developed a reputation as one of the most influential young film festivals in the U.S., offering an amazing array of new but not yet famous feature films, documentaries and shorts. More than 16,000 filmmakers, national media, celebrities and film enthusiasts attended the annual event in 2010, lighting up that last dreary month of winter. discuss pretty much every topic under the sun. Free and open to the public, CWA puts people from different backgrounds and areas of expertise on panels together to discuss everything from the arts to politics to technology.

Participants are not paid, but enjoy the hospitality of local residents who for 64 years have opened their doors to strangers. It’s education in its purest form. The 64th Annual Conference on World Affairs will be held April 9-13 on the CU campus. Make a point of attending a panel or two each day and feel your universe expand.

Dairy Center for the Performing Arts — Housed in the old Watts-Hardy Dairy Plant, the Dairy Center has become one of the incubatory grounds for many art collaboratives and hosts theater, dance and visual arts exhibitions. It also hosts the Boedecker Theater, an art house cinema.

Estes Park — Head west on Highway 36 and spend a day in Estes Park. There, you’ll see the famous Stanley Hotel, which inspired Stephen King’s horror novel The Shining. Take time to stroll past the shops, including a taffy store that uses an old-fashioned taffy-pulling machine, and check out the scenery from the comfort of a gondola. Or pass through town and head straight into Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) for some of the most majestic scenery in the United States. During a short period in the fall, buses run up the canyon, taking tourists into the park to listen to one of nature’s eeriest and most primal sounds — the bugling of bull elk during the rut.You can’t be this close to Estes and RMNP and not take the time to visit.

4/20 — That’s “fourtwenty.” On April 20 at 4:20, people gather at CU’s Norlin Quad to toke in protest of marijuana prohibition and just for fun.You don’t have to smoke pot to participate.You can just kick back and watch. CU’s image. Because CU isn’t already considered a party school, right? Hey, whatevs, CU. Farmers’ Markets — Open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. from spring through Thanksgiving and on Wednesday evenings during the summer, the Boulder County Farmers’ Markets offer fresh, organic fruits and vegetables that were grown here in the county. Stop by Boulder Farmers’ Market at Central Park and stock up on scrumptious treats like Colorado-grown peaches, freshly baked organic breads, organic cheeses and honey fresh from the comb. Not only is it more healthful for you to eat locally grown and prepared food — it might help you keep off the dreaded “freshman 15” — it’s also better for the environment.

Frozen Dead Guy Days — Held in Nederland each winter, Frozen Dead Guy Days celebrates the town’s most famous resident, Bredo Morstoel, with live music, Coffin Races and other zany events. Morstoel, often called Grandpa and known colloquially as “Grandpa in the Tuff Shed,” died and was placed on ice in a freezer in his grandson’s shed. The town built a somewhat more permanent freezing center for Grandpa after his grandson was deported back to his homeland of Norway.

Geocache — If you like treasure but find yourself fresh out of treasure maps, consider geocaching.

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. Find hidden treasure “cached” in remote areas, then share your experience online with other adventurers. It’s a great way to experience the outdoors while having a bit of fun. Hall and Heil Valley ranches — These two separate parcels of county open space offer some of the best mountain biking, hiking, equestrian trails and mountain scenery around. Hall Ranch, just outside Lyons,

includes 3,206 acres of backcountry, while Heil Ranch is made up of 4,923 acres of relatively untouched mountain land. Both at Hall and Heil Valley were set aside by Boulder County Parks and Open Space because they’re prime wildlife habitat and home to increasingly rare native plants. Whether you’re a mountain biker or someone who likes to watch birds, you’ll find what you’re looking for Hall and Heil Valley. Just remember to take nothing but photographs and to leave nothing but footprints — or tire tracks, as the case may be. International Film Series — Screening more than 100 films each year, the International Film Series is a Boulder institution. From the latest European films to old 35-mm film prints to film premieres, IFS offers an eclectic mix of films and directors, providing local cinephiles with films they can’t get at the local mega-plex. Staffed by people who love film, IFS brings award-winning filmmakers to campus and nationally recognized events to our city. All of the films are shown on campus in Muenzinger Auditorium, making it especially easy for CU students to enjoy this celebrated art form. Kinetic Sculpture Race — Held every year in late August at Union Reservoir outside Longmont, Kinetics is a Boulder County tradition. For $10 per car, you and your friends can watch costumed teams with names like “Up-a-Chuck” and “Jump a Shark” compete for prizes as they navigate water and mud in weird, homemade, people-powered sculptures that double as transportation.

Prizes are awarded for engineering, costumes, team style, sculpture and other questionable attributes. This year’s event is slated for Saturday, Aug. 27, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s a great way and

weird way to start the school year.

Libraries — Once upon a time there was no Internet. Those who were hungry for knowledge went to places called “libraries,” where they used “card catalogues” to find books that held a world of information. They read the books, and their knowledge grew, permitting them one day to invent the Internet and make card catalogues obsolete. However, libraries are still important — and not just for hooking up. They offer real books with pages that smell like paper and ink, as well as art exhibits, music and other events. In Boulder, we’re blessed with a wealth of libraries, from Norlin Library on campus to the Boulder Public Library system, which includes the Carnegie branch, dedicated to local history.

Mountain biking — Mountain biking may be the official sport of Boulder. For fat-tire fanatics, grinding up some rocky single-track then soaring downhill again is their crack. They simply can’t get enough. County open space offers everything from the 2.4-mile loop track at Walker Ranch to 11 miles of popular out-and-back at Glacier Lake Road. Naked Pumpkin Run — Sometimes you just need to put a jack-o-lantern on your head, take off your clothes and run down the Pearl Street Mall naked — or nearly naked.

For years, pumpkin runners celebrated the autumn with a bit of gourd-headed streaking, but the Boulder cops ruined that on Halloween night 2008, when they ticketed several runners for indecent exposure. But the spirit of the run survives in the form of a nearly naked pumpkin run in which participants conceal just their junk, making for a lot of bare-ass fun. Open Space and Mountain Parks — Back in 1898, Boulder residents were worried about protecting their mountain backdrop.They put together some money and bought the Batchelder Ranch, located where Chautauqua Park is located today.Then in 1907, the city received a federal land grant of 1,200 acres on Flagstaff Mountain. But what can you do with half a mountain? So Boulder residents agreed to purchase another 1,200 acres.

Then in 1964, a developer announced plans to build a luxury hotel on what we know today as Enchanted Mesa. The resulting uproar from citizens prompted the City Council to condemn the land and force its sale.

The city bought the land and added it to Boulder Mountain Parks.

Since then, Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks has expanded to include 45,000 acres and 144 miles of trails, all of which are there for you to enjoy. Polar Bear Plunge — Celebrate the New Year by putting on your bikini or swim trunks and jumping into 33-degree water at Boulder Reservoir. Doesn’t that sound like fun? Last January, about 750 people participated, helping to raise $30,000 for Alzheimer’s research, while getting their New Year off to a robust — some might say “crazy” — start. One good thing about jumping into freezing water — it makes everything you do for the rest of the year seem warm.

Quarry — Look up at the city’s mountain backdrop, and you’ll see an orange pit carved into the mountainside. It’s what’s left of a quarry — one of several in the area. Much of the rock was used in buildings at the University of Colorado and in other historic buildings around town.

Fortunately, Boulder residents realized that quarrying would mar the natural beauty of the foothills, and operations ceased. But now the quarry is a bit of 10 August 18, 2011

Rockies game — Whether it’s opening day in the chill of April or the tail end of the season on a crisp September day, Coors Field is the place to be, cheering on Helton,Tulo, CarGo and the rest of the Colorado Rockies.

Win or lose, there’s no place like the ballpark with peanuts, popcorn, cold beer and hot dogs. Football tends to get most of the glory in this state, but the Rox have their diehard fans, too. Thursday Cruiser Ride — During the warmer months, bike lovers hop onto their cruiser bikes, meet at a prearranged location and ride through the city calling “Happy Thursday!” to whomever they see. But the fun doesn’t end there. The rides also have themes, and many riders wear

U-Pick — Boulder was recently named the foodiest city in the county. Here, it’s not just about eating well, it’s about eating in a way that connects you with local farmers and sustains both the environment and the local economy. Community Supported Agriculture is the start of this show.

One of the great pleasures of CSA membership is the ability to go and help on the farm and pick your own berries, pumpkins and other produce. Valmont Bike Park — Responding to a demand for in-town cycling, the city of Boulder purchased land on Valmont Road and spent years gathering public input to create a world-class facility that offers both XC and DJ bikers a place to shred. Vedauwoo — At some point during your time at CU, you’re going to want to go on a road trip. We suggest you head north to Vedauwoo for camping, climbing, angling, crosscountry skiing, snowshoeing, stargazing and mountain biking. Located north of Interstate 80 between Laramie and Cheyenne, Wyo.,Vedauwoo is part of the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. It offers a picnic area and an overnight campground, as well as more than 900 climbing routes.

Whitewater rafting — You have no idea how fun it is ride

a roiling river until you try it.All that snow in the mountains gets channeled into Colorado’s rivers come springtime, turning May and June into a rafter’s wet dream. Hey, X is a tough letter, and the IMAX Theater — and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science — definitely belong on your bucketlist. “It can create all kinds of hassle,” Sarbaugh says. “For example, a renter who is not on the lease and has to pay a security deposit has no rights to get it back. Or, if they aren’t on the lease and decide to move out, then those who are left have to cover the lost rent money.”

Talk to thy neighbors Want to find out what the area is really like? Ask around.

What do they pay for utilities? Is it a quiet building? What about laundry?

Water pressure? Closest grocery store? Bar? Why are they moving? Is it something concerning the place or just personal?

Does the property manager really charge a late fee if you miss it by an hour? A day? What about the heating and cooling, is there an air conditioner? How does the trash pick-up work?

Public transportation? A place to lock up a bike? Free parking?

What about pets? Even if they say no pets — are people sneaking them in? Any mold issues? Plumbing problems? Is there an obnoxious amount of constant partying, just the right amount, not enough?

Though the property owner can just as easily answer many of these questions, the people who actually live there give much more honest and accurate answers.

hen the daily grind of CU’s campus life begins, so do the countless amount of questions related to school, jobs, safety and any problem that could arise while in the midst of the whirlwind of activity known as college.

Problems and questions can be an opportunity to make the most of your resources at CU. “Never hesitate to seek out the resources that we offer,” CU Spokesman Bronson Hilliard says. “There are great, well-trained people here to help.”

Here is a quick guide to resolving some of these issues.

Buff OneCards Since your Buff OneCard is your physical claim that you are a CU student, furthermore the key to most dorm rooms, dining halls, buildings during off-hours, football games and your Campus Cash holder, it is important that you keep it on you at all times. An average freshman uses his or her Buff OneCard more than 10 times a day, says Larry Drees, Buff OneCard director.

If you lose your Buff card or it is stolen, Drees says, immediately call 303-492-1212, or use your IdentiKey username on the Buff OneCard website to deactivate your card. Then visit the Campus Card Office in the Center for Community, room N180, for a new card. It will cost $25 to replace or $5 to fix a card that is damaged.

To obtain your yearly bus pass sticker and sleeve, go to the Campus Card Office.

Registering a party If you are throwing a weekend bash, registering your party will help you avoid getting a noise ticket from the CU police, which can be costly for every person on a lease where the party took place, says Hilliard.

“The advantage to registering your party is it gives you a buffer zone between you and your neighbors,” Hilliard says. “It’s a smart thing to do.”

Of the 208 parties registered last school year with Off-Campus Student Services, only two of those parties received tickets, says Susan Barkman, the community outreach specialist in the OCSS.

Where to turn

CU offers lots of resources for busy students

To register your Friday or Saturday night party, go to Off-Campus Student Services (with that ever-useful Buff OneCard) at UMC Room 313 by noon on Friday the weekend of your party. Should a noise complaint be issued, a police dispatcher will call your house and give you a 20-minute warning to shut down the party rather than visiting directly, says Barkman.

NightRide If you find yourself stranded, CU’s NightRide offers free transportation to anyone who presents a Buff OneCard, and is on campus or within the city’s boundaries. According to UMC Assistant Director Kristi Graham-Gitkind, NightRide operates when school is in session from sunset until 12:15 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 1:15 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

“The program is very popular,” she says. “Last year we provided rides to over 40,000 CU community members.”

Career services and advising The thought of graduating and joining this “real world” you hear so much about is scary. CU’s Career Services can act as just the guide you need to ensure that you make the right choice when choosing a major or career. Once you are ready to get some work experience, Career Services staff can help you find an internship or a job, both in Colorado and out of state, says Lisa Severy, the director of career services. If you have a question specific to your major, or want to talk to a preprofessional advisor, make an appointment with an academic advisor. CU advisors can help you recognize your strengths and how they will translate into a major, says Kathy Noonan, an academic advisor to open-option students. They can help when your initial plans don’t pan out as you had hoped, assist you in discovering the perfect student group to join and find internships.

“We know the [campus] departments inside and out,” she says. “We help keep you on track for graduation and get you to the right place.”

Counseling In the midst of the overwhelming aspects of university life, it is normal to feel anxious or depressed. CU’s Counseling and Psychological Services offers six free counseling sessions plus an hour-long intake session to any student, says Dr. Julie Yun, a psychologist at Counseling and Psychological Services.

“We encourage people to come in when something isn’t feeling right and it is lasting more than a week or two,” she says.

If you are interested in talking to a counselor, stop by the CAPS office from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and a walk-in counselor will be able to talk to you, says Yun. For evening or weekend counseling, call 303-492-6766.

If you would rather talk oneon-one with a student, call the CU Helpline at 303-492-1000, or visit their website to chat online at colora do.edu/studentgroups/cuhelpline/. Staff will be available to chat from 7 p.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday, and 9 p.m. through 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights, says Janelle Kramer, a Helpline director and CU student.

Kramer explains that the CU Helpline is a support system designed to listen to students who want to talk to someone anonymously about any sort of problem, from roommate conflicts to sexual abuse to suicide.

“We are all students, going through some of the same things our callers go through,” she says. “We understand where they are coming from and why they feel the way they do.”

A suicide hotline for immediate assistance is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Victimization If you have felt threatened or harassed or have experienced a traumatic event while at CU, the Office of Victim Assistance (OVA) is available for you. The office helps victims who have suffered from instances of sexual assault, bias-motivated incidents, crime, hazing, serious illness, abuse, global tragedies, death of loved ones, serious accidents and partner violence, among many other circumstances, says Ruchi Malhotra, a victim advocate at the OVA. The Office of Victim Assistance provides information, support and short-term counseling to students experiencing a difficult life event and will help provide the proper resources for long-term help.

“Our advocacy is unlimited,” Malhotra says. “We want to support the person throughout the entire process.”

The OVA will also provide guidance to those who have concerns about a struggling friend. To talk to a representative at the OVA, call 303492-8855, schedule an appointment online at cuvictimassistance.com or visit their office in the Center for Community, room S440.

“One thing that we really try and incorporate into all of our programs — and this is something we’ve been doing for the past couple years — is this educational piece/reflective piece and this post-orientation piece,” she says. “It’s part of students learning to step outside themselves to better understand their world.”

That’s the giving back part, and while all of those opportunities are great, volunteering also gives students a chance to get something back, namely, the skills and experience that will be key in launching a career.

“I hear a lot of students say they’re too busy to volunteer, but my own experience and the students I’ve seen bring forth a career they’re excited about have all made time to volunteer,” says Sarah Dawn Haynes, programs assistant for The Environmental Center. She works with students to match their interests to projects they can take on around campus. “I really encourage students to make time, even if it’s only for six hours a month.”

Training as a crew leader turns into a leadership skill that can be listed on a resume. Overseeing a project translates to a resume entry for project management.

It also fills in the gap academia leaves for professional training; it’s not the job of professors and advisors to teach students group-working skills or how to communicate like professionals.

Volunteering can create a role where working professionals model and perhaps provide some coaching for students who need to learn those skills.

“Volunteering gives a safe space to learn and grow professionally,” Haynes

says.

The Environmental Center also coordinates activities around campus for students who want to help out taking care of their school. The Green Stampede works to create zero-waste football games, and Green Teams do outreach on The Hill, approaching sororities and fraternities with ideas for greener living. If you want to really get your hands dirty, volunteers are needed to sort through recyclables to make sure the stream is clean.

“A lot of students will come to us with a project of their own interests, and I help them find out how to use their own gifts and talents and their major to make it something they can put on their resume,” she says.

Students have worked on projects from a few days to a few years, getting high-powered dryers installed in the UMC or just educating students who smoke on the impacts of littering with cigarette butts.

“It really depends on the initiative of the students, how involved they want to get,” Haynes says.

If that’s just picking up cigarette butts or posting “prompt stickers” with reminders to turn off the lights when leaving a room, that’s fine.

Haynes recommends starting with what you’re interested in, and working local so you can see the effects of your progress.

“A lot of students don’t know what they’re really good at and don’t know what they love,” she says.

Volunteering gives a chance to explore those options.

The Volunteer Fair on Sept. 6 lets aspiring volunteers meet face-to-face with organizations looking for new recruits.

Alternative Breaks hires first for team leaders, and those applications are due Sept. 9.

Applications for trip participants come out on Oct. 24 and are due by Nov. 7. Trips take place the week of spring break.

Other events in the year students can get involved with include Better Boulder Better World, a one-day volunteering spree for students, the Council for World Events and Bioneers, both lecture series that take student volunteers, and the summer Shakespeare Festival.

hen you’re in college, the temptation to spend money is strong.

Beer. Eating out.Video games.

Beer. Music. Cover charges. Beer.

Regardless of whether you’re rich or poor, it can be a dangerous game to play unless you keep close tabs on your finances.

Dennis Paul, assistant vice president for business and community development at Elevations Credit Union, runs seminars on money management, including a few specifically aimed at college students.

Paul cautions that unless you take a proactive approach to budgeting, things can get out of hand pretty quickly, whether it’s interest on credit card debt or fees assessed for having insufficient funds in your account.

“The pizza ends up costing $120 because the check bounces,” he says, citing charges that could be assessed by the bank, the merchant and even a collection agency.

Paul explains that the keys to financial soundness in college include creating positive habits, making sure you know how much money you have at any given moment and having a plan in writing — whether it’s done with sophisticated budgeting software or “all the way down to a spiral notebook of paper. It’s whatever works for you.”

One of the biggest financial traps for college students is the credit card. It’s long been common to see tables with bank representatives offering special offers on credit cards in student unions like the University Memorial Center. The financial background checks done by banks, to ensure students could afford to make payments, were cursory, if done at all.

In many cases, annual interest rates were quickly raised to higher than 30 percent. Paul says studies show that seven out of 10 college students see their credit rating substantially damaged by the time they graduate.

Fortunately, legislation passed called the “Credit Card Account-

ability, Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009” helped make it a bit more difficult for the big banks to suck unsuspecting college kids into their clutches. The bill, which went into effect in February 2010, changed the minimum age at which one may apply for a credit card from 18 to 21, “which is huge,” Paul says. Now, those between the age of 18 and 21 need a parent or another adult to co-sign for a credit card, or they must qualify based on their income.

He says that because Elevations is a credit union, it’s like a co-op, and doesn’t engage in the same predatory practices as the big corporate banks. Elevations distributes a variety of brochures and offers about 80 workshops a year to teach its members how to manage their money wisely.

“And it’s not a sales pitch disguised as an educational seminar,” Paul says, adding that Elevations benefits from having an informed clientele. “We are only as strong as our members. We only do well if the membership does well.”

Credit cards aside, it is easy to find yourself spending more than you have on hand when you’re in college.

In his seminars, Paul asks college students to create a plan based on expense categories. First, he has them write down their total income, then they list “fixed” costs like rent, car insurance, the cell phone bill, utilities and debt payments. Then Paul directs them to jot down their “flexible” expenses, like food, laundry, transportation and other living costs. Finally, they write down their “negotiable” costs like eating out, movies, sports, gaming and trips. After tallying the totals, if the student is in the red, he or she must trim from the final two categories.

The bottom line, Paul says, is to be both proactive and defensive, aware of the various predatory practices out there that are designed to capitalize on college students’ funds.

“There are plenty of opportunities for your money to vaporize,” he says.

Awareness key to safety Campus and community urge caution, even in Boulder

egardless of Boulder topping lifestyle lists and intelligence indexes, the city is as susceptible to criminal activity as any other college town.

In addition to scoring Bon Appetit’s foodiest town in America in 2010, Boulder also stacked up four murders, 35 instances of rape, 42 cases of misdemeanor sexual assault and 141 instances of aggravated assault, according to Boulder Police Department crime statistics.

“Crime happens everywhere, and unfortunately Boulder is no exception,” says Kim Kobel, public information officer for the Boulder Police Department.

While the 2011 statistics have not been finalized or released yet, Kobel says overall crime is down 10 percent from this time last year. Sexual assault is down by 14 percent. However, since March there have been a handful of instances of attempted and successful interpersonal violence.

Police have issued press releases about four instances of attempted or reported sexual assault; an obscure toilet-peeping perpetrator; an arrest in an attempted child abduction; a bias-motivated assault that occurred outside the Walrus saloon, a nightlife hotspot; and a burglary, assault and first-degree murder charge that sent shock waves through the community.

“Anytime they are out and about, people need to be aware of their surroundings,” Kobel says. “Criminals are opportunists. And anytime they see an opportunity, that is when they decide to strike.”

The CU Police Department, which deals exclusively with incidents that occur on campus, reported four oncampus incidents of forcible rape, five incidents of aggravated assault and 54 instances of simple assault in 2009.

Cmdr. Tim McGraw, the CU Police Department’s public information officer, says the one common factor in all instances of violence is intoxication.

“If people do choose to imbibe alcohol we recommend moderation,”

McGraw says. “We also recommend that people travel with buddies.”

Statistical information is not necessarily an actual reflection of violence in Boulder, he says.

“We average about four [sexual assaults] a year,” McGraw says. “So that number can go up by 50 or 100 percent if we do have an assailant who decides to prey on people on campus. Conversely, specific to that crime, experts tell us that [sexual assault] is a traditionally very underreported offense. So a nuance in statistical information and numbers data may be influenced by a greater percentage of people reporting what generally or typically does occur.”

Kobel says the Boulder Police Department’s crime statistics reflect similar fluctuations.

For students or community members who experience instances of interpersonal violence, the Office of Victim’s Assistance (OVA) provides confidential, short-term counseling and an advocacy program to support victims through reporting and reconciliation in the criminal justice system.

“I think a lot of people think if they come to counseling after experiencing a really bad thing that they are going to be pushed to do things they aren’t ready to do, and that is not our style at all,” says Mary Friedrichs, the director of the Office of Victim’s Assistance. “We meet the client where they are. We work with them for whatever their needs are at the moment.”

Kobel urges anyone who has been a victim of sexual assault to immediately seek medical attention and report the incident to the police department. Both she and McGraw say to follow gut instincts and call 911 if safety or security is ever in question.

“If someone goes through the process of, should I call the police or shouldn’t I, then they should,” McGraw says. “It’s just that sixth sense or common sense factor that comes into play. If something looks a little bit off-kilter, that’s a good time for us to get involved.”

t’s no secret that there will be some stressful moments during the school year, especially if you’re carrying a full load of classes and trying to do other activities. If it’s not managed, a busy schedule is bound to cause tension.

“Stress is in the top three issues that we see here at the Center when students come in,” says Julie Yun, a clinical psychologist at CU’s Counseling and Psychological Services Center. “Usually peak times tend to be around exam times like mid-terms and finals. A common scenario is this: The students come in and they usually have a lot on their plates in terms of acclimating, adjusting to a new year or, if you’re a freshman, adjusting to a new campus. So it takes them a while to get their footing in terms of juggling and managing all of the stuff they need to manage.”

To help alleviate the stress you may experience during the year, we asked Yun for some tips on how to manage stress and push through the tough moments around exam time.

Organize and structure — Even if you’re halfway through the semester, trying to get some organization in your life can be really helpful.Your work or time doesn’t have to be this huge jumbled mass of activities and responsibilities you’re dealing with,Yun says.You can parcel it out into manageable bits. Create something loose that will help you get focused, but not something so rigid that it accounts for every minute of the day, which can actually cause anxiety.

Find good places to study — When it comes to studying, sometimes it’s difficult to find that happy place where you can focus. Most people base it on their high school experiences,Yun says. Some people tend to study best in their rooms when it’s quiet, and some people find they work best when they’re in a busier environment like a café or library. Use your history and what worked in the past. If you have no idea, then experiment.

Sleep — Sleep is something

that students think of as a luxury that they can sort of indulge in when time allows,Yun says. But it has huge implications, she says, not just for your experience of stress and your emotional stability; sleep is also crucial when it comes to learning. A lot of information consolidation — that means adding new information to old information — happens when you’re sleeping. Think of your brain as a supercomputer that’s taking in bits of information all day long, but that stuff doesn’t get processed and organized until you’re sleeping. Sleep deprivation not only impedes clear thinking, it also affects health, memory and one’s ability to cope with stress.

Don’t cram — For decades, students seemed to think having an eight-hour study session through the wee hours of the morning before a test was helpful. But there’s a better way to prepare.Yun suggests parceling the information out over a certain period of time and creating a study structure where you’re doing a little bit at a time. Sleeping well the night before the exam can be helpful in managing stress and improving your recall.

Exercise and diet — Eating when (and what) you’re supposed to and walking or riding your bike to class instead of driving can be helpful in reducing stress, too. Our bodies are sort of programmed to get rid of a buildup of stressful energy and anxious energy physically,Yun says. Students who take good care of themselves and go out for regular physical activity and exercise, as well as having good sleep habits and good eating habits, generally get through most high-pressure situations pretty well.

Focus on what you can control — If you’ve got a lot going on, Yun recommends picking your battles.

Think about what you have control over and what things you have no control over. Stress out, if you need to, over the things that you can actually do something about, and then do something.You could stress about the stuff you can’t do anything about, but what’s the point?

MyHomework (iPhone/iPad) — If you’re going to school full-time and carrying a load of four to five classes a semester, keeping track of all your assignments, projects, schedules and due dates can be a bit overwhelming. But for those of you with an iPhone or iPad, the MyHomework app will help alleviate some of those anxieties.

The app allows you to list your classes and your assignments and integrate them with a calendar to show when they’re due. The app even has a notification feature to remind you an assignment is due in a couple of days. This makes life so much easier for just $2.99. StudyDroid Flashcards (Android) — Need to memorize words and their definitions? Need to remember the steps in solving a chemistry formula? hen Jon Embree, CU’s new head football coach, started looking at film from last year’s team, what he saw was a team with a crisis of identity.

“When people see us play, I want them to understand we’re a physical program, a physical team,” says Embree, a former tight end at CU under Bill McCartney. “I don’t think we’ve been able to run the football like we should.”

Embree, hired in November 2010, replaces Dan Hawkins, who recorded a lessthan-stellar 19-39 record in just fewer than five years at the helm in Boulder.

A graduate of Cherry Creek High School, Embree stayed in state and played his collegiate ball at the University of Colorado as a tight end under McCartney, helping lay a solid foundation for a team that would eventually win three straight Big 8 titles and a national championship. Embree brings to the table a strong NFL pedigree, as do many on his staff. Embree played in the league for two years and coached for four, under coaching legends Mike Shanahan and Herman Edwards.

Experienced at the collegiate level as well, Embree spent a decade in Boulder as an assistant to McCartney, Rick Neuheisel and Gary Barnett.

As the Buffs move into their new digs in the Pac-12 conference, the coaching staff has to adjust to a different, speedier type of football compared to that of the rugged Big 12.

“There is so much diversity in this league offensively and defensively that you’re not going to see the same style on both sides of the ball,” says Embree. “If you play Oregon, you’re going to play fast-break football. And next week, if you’re playing Stanford, it’s power football.”

Embree and his staff face possibly the most difficult schedule in the nation. The Buffaloes are burdened with the task of playing 13 straight games without a bye week. The opposing talent is equally stringent. Foes such as Ohio State and Stanford will open their gates to the Buffaloes, while USC and national championship game-loser Oregon will Boulder Weekly Student Guide ’11

towards the end of the 2009 season, emerging as a legitimate deep threat. Senior Toney Clemons looks to provide a possessionoriented option at receiver, filling the void left

by Scotty McKnight, who was drafted in the seventh round by the New York Jets. Along the offensive line, CU is faced with the unenviable task of replacing first-round draft pick and New England Patriot Nate Solder. Senior Ryan Miller aims to anchor the o-line in his last season at Colorado.

On the defensive side of the ball, holes will have to be replaced in the secondary, as the Buffs lose star cornerback Jimmy Smith and safety Jalil Brown to the NFL. Junior Ray Polk and senior Anthony Perkins, both safeties, should provide veteran leadership in the back four. The linebacking corps will have a fresh look as Doug Rippy, Jon Major and Derrick Webb take the reigns from graduated seniors B.J. Beatty, Michael Sipili and Tyler Ahles, who was converted to fullback over the offseason. On the defensive line, CU returns Josh Hartigan, Curtis Cunningham and Will Pericak, all former starters.

Student Guide ’11 Boulder Weekly

W

hen students and alumni of the University of Colorado think of the athletic department on campus, their minds often turn to the Division I football and basketball teams and their various accomplishments over the years. But there exists a much larger group of student athletes with their own set of accomplishments that are frequently overlooked: the 1,400 students who play club sports.

These athletes make up the 34 different club sports teams on campus — 21 of which qualified for a national championship last season — and have a much deeper level of involvement within their teams than the training and travel of Division I athletes, says CU Club Sports Director Kris Schoech.

Club sports athletes have a GPA requirement and must take a certain number of credits to participate, like Division I athletes, but club sports athletes hold their own tryouts for new players, must fundraise in order to travel and compete against other teams regionally and nationally, and take on leadership positions to organize their teams’ schedules and budgets, Schoech says.

“The good thing about our program is they practice two to three times a week, and games are on the weekend, so we give them a little bit of time to enjoy the college experience.

We want to make sure they do that and succeed academically,” Schoech says. “We also give them the opportunity for student development. Usually juniors and seniors, they’re the ones that organize the schedule.They’re the ones who do the budgets.We let them do as much of that as possible, and they do all the fundraising. Our coaches are just there to coach.”

Kassidi Warnock, a 21-year-old senior business marketing major, was secretary of the executive board for the council last year. She says having the opportunity to not only play the sport, but also be involved on the council, gave her the chance to lead the team on several different levels, an experience missing from a Division 1 team.

Warnock has been playing women’s volleyball for all four of her years at CU, beginning at the varsity level of club sports her freshman year, then playing at the Division I level for part of her sophomore year before electing to return to the club team.

“It’s a whole different experience.

It’s something where you can compete and still train and make some great friends and be really involved in the rec center,” Warnock says. “That was something that I really wanted to do rather than compete at [a Division I] level.”

Perhaps the area that requires the most involvement and attention of the student athletes is fundraising.

In order to have a successful season, each of these teams must fundraise enough money to match the amount that is budgeted to them by the university, Schoech says. Fundraising activities vary from team to team, but very often include donation letters that teams send out to family, friends and alumni.

Dan Finck, coach of the women’s lacrosse club team, says their focus for fundraising for the upcoming year is on spreading awareness about the team.

“This year, we’re going to host our own tournament. We’re going to have some of the top teams in the country [come] to Boulder in the

spring for a weekend, and then we’re also going to host clinics for kids, I would say starting at third grade through high school,” Finck says.

“That’s what we’re putting a lot of energy into, but we’ll also hopefully have a lot of other smaller fundraising. We typically will do some sort of restaurant deal where 10 percent of whatever’s sold goes toward our fundraising.”

Even with the deep level of involvement that comes with playing a club sport, many of these athletes find their Division II and Division III teams to be an equal balance of participating in a competitive sport while maintaining the social life that contributes to the overall college experience.

Alex Lencioni, a 21-year-old senior psychology and integrative physiology double major, has been playing for the men’s club hockey team throughout his four years at CU and says that joining a club sport his freshman year helped him feel more comfortable on such a large campus.

“On a campus with something like 2,500 undergraduates, club sports was a way for me to cut that down to 50 people I could get in contact with and get to know really well,” Lencioni says. “It’s a really good starting point for college life, I think, and a good way to meet people who are interested in the same things as you.”

Trying to balance being a full-time student and playing a competitive club sport with such responsibilities may sound overwhelming, but John Pfeiff, one of the coaches of the men’s club hockey team, says having such high expectations of these athletes in all areas of their collegiate activities is what encourages them to work so

hard.

Despite all their hard work and accomplishments, Pfeiff says, one frustration for these coaches and athletes is the lack of recognition across campus of the teams’ achievements.

“A lot of the reaction you get is people will see some piece of merchandise on a player and say, ‘Oh, CU has a hockey team?’” Pfeiff says.

“We’ve been nationally ranked how many years? We’ve won two national championships between the two teams, and we still don’t have the following we’d like.”

Lencioni says the team tries to raise awareness on campus but often feels overshadowed by the Division I teams.

“It’s tough to get the word out because the Division I football and basketball get the advertising from the school because they bring money to the school,” Lencioni says. “Hopefully people will get to hear more about club sports. Just because we’re a club doesn’t mean we don’t play at a high level. We have a lot of talented athletes here.”

Even if these athletes do not have the same recognition as the Division I athletes, Tim Jorgensen, associate director of programs for the recreation center, says it does not deter them from continuing to be involved in the club sports program on campus and contributing to their overall college experience.

“I think it’s all positive, because any time you have an involved student, it’s definitely correlated to graduation rate,” Jorgensen says.

“So you have an involved student, they’re happy, they’re engaged in the campus community, so I think it’s all good. Ultimately they come to get an education and to graduate, but it’s not only their experience inside the classroom, but outside, that makes them a successful student.”

Likely to be added at CU is women’s lacrosse, a booming sport along the Front Range. Women’s lacrosse carries the benefit of being a spring sport (all of CU’s varsity team sports are in the fall or winter), and it is a cheaper addition. Colorado would not have to build new facilities for lacrosse. If CU were to add baseball or softball, new facilities would have to be constructed.

While the Buffs are enthused about their move westward, they carry many pleasant memories from their old homes, the Big 12 and the Big 8. Among these memories are three successive Big 8 football conference titles spanning from 1989 to 1991, a national championship in football and 12 NCAA tournament appearances by women’s basketball, including six Sweet 16 showings and three Elite Eight trips.

“I think [the best memories] are the big wins that you have,” says Barry. “I think our couple of wins over Stanford in the NCAA tournament — one was in 1993 and the other in 2002. I remember those because they

were NCAA tournament games in the Sweet 16.”

Despite these positive recollections, there is a palpable atmosphere of optimism about the future at the Dal Ward center.

Barry says she believes that her former team, now coached by her one-time pupil, Linda Lappe, can compete in the Pac-12.

“I think that Linda will have a team that will be right around the middle of the pack,” says Barry. “I think that she will be in the top six [in the conference], but I think she will be on the lower end of that top six. But she can compete with Stanford. She did it as a player, so I think she will not have this fear of playing them.”

Assisting Lappe and her peers, Tad Boyle and Liz Kritza (men’s basketball and volleyball coaches, respectively), will be a brand new, state-of-the-art indoor practice facility, scheduled to open in August. The new $10 million facility will ensure that volleyball and basketball studentathletes always have a place to hone their talents. Since the Coors Events/ Conference Center is used for some classes and other events such as graduation, some athletes didn’t always have a place to play.

With the new upgrades, there will be little room for excuses for failure if the Buffs can’t compete with the best in the Pac-12.

“We’ve upgraded volleyball significantly in the past five years to feel like they can be a national player,” says Barry. “I think Linda feels, in women’s basketball, that there is not much else we can give to be in the top 20 programs in the nation. What do they need to go out and get the best players in the nation? I think we are moving in that direction pretty well.”

After spending last year as a co-defensive coordinator on Mike Stoops’ Arizona coaching staff, Brown decided to return to his home state for his third stint with the Colorado Buffaloes.

“I appreciate the opportunity that Mike Stoops gave me down at U of A,” says Brown. “It was a tremendous situation, a great learning experience, and I enjoyed my time there, but I’m a Buff. I’m moving on as a Buff and excited to be a Buff.”

Head Coach Jon Embree gave Brown more responsibility than he has seen before at CU, naming Brown to the defensive coordinator position.

Brown will also oversee the defensive secondary, a position he is quite used to because he spent seven years in that job, first from 1991 to 1993, then from 2006 to 2009. Brown says he feels like he has an advantage, because he spent last season in the Pac-10, facing many of the teams CU will play this season.

“It’s a huge, huge benefit,” says Brown. “It’s a huge help to be in the

Pac-10 one year before it became the Pac-12. It’s a great league. There are so many things I was able to see there offensively from teams. They’re so innovative.”

For Brown, the return to Boulder wasn’t just about football. His family lives in Colorado, including his father Irv, who is a Denver sports radio personality and former CU baseball coach, as well as a former assistant football coach.

“It was easy in one regard, because I’m from here,” says Brown.

“My mom and dad live here, and I have the chance to get my children around their grandparents. I’d had the good fortune of working with Jon Embree back in the early ’90s, when we were both assistants under Bill McCartney, so I know what Jon was going to bring to the table, and I really wanted to be a part of that.”

Brown faces the challenge of replacing cornerback Jimmy Smith and safety Jalil Brown, who were both selected in the NFL draft, Smith in the first round.

“That’s going to be a long process,” says Brown. “There’s nobody

on the horizon who has that same sort of ability that we can count on to step up and fill those shoes. We’re just not there right now.”

As the Buffs head into fall camp, the starting cornerback and safety jobs are still left open. The main competition for those spots is likely to come from senior Arthur Jaffee and sophomores Paul Vigo, Jered Bell and Deji Olatoye. Incoming freshmen also look to vie for the starting job, according to Brown.

Talent development at secondary positions will be at a premium, and there are few who are better at it than Brown. Under Brown’s tutelage, former Buffs Deon Figures and Chris Hudson were both named All-Americans and won the Thorpe Award, which is given to the best defensive back in college football.

Brown is very familiar with the NFL, as he has spent 15 years in the league on the staffs of New Orleans, San Diego, San Francisco and Atlanta.

Brown says he believes his past in the nation’s premier football league gives him a leg up when recruiting the best players.

“It definitely helps, because there is a staff in place that has been there and done that,” says Brown. “[The NFL] is where most young guys want to end up if they have that sort of ability, so they would like to be coached by somebody who has been in that league.”

The best will certainly have to be found and developed, because the Buffs defense will face the very best of the Pac-12 and the NCAA. Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck returned to school for his junior year of eligibility after being the projected overall number one pick in the 2011 NFL draft. Luck threw for more than 3,000 yards, completed more than 70 percent of his passes, and finished second in Heisman trophy voting. Oregon brings its high-octane offense, generally considered to be the best in college football last year, to Folsom Field in October. Other tough tests will be administered by the University of Southern California, Ohio State and Washington, among others.

Brown undoubtedly hopes that his third stint will more resemble his first stint rather than his second. CU went 25-8-3 with Brown on the staff from 1991 to 1993, including a Big 8 championship in 1991. In Brown’s most recent stint, the Dan Hawkinsled Buffs registered a 16-33 tally.

Brown believes the Buffs will have success under Embree, their new leader.

“He is smart as a whip,” Brown says of his boss. “You’re dealing with a man who is highly intelligent. His mind works very fast, which is such an asset in football. He sees things.

He processes it. He gets it, and he has answers for the problems.”

mma Coburn never dreamed she would come this far.

CU’s cross-country/track standout, a senior from Crested Butte, completed her journey to superstardom in the running world earlier this summer with victories in two big — scratch that, huge — national races.

“Everything’s just transformed,” she says.

“I got to college and I thought it would be great to one day make the varsity, and then I surpassed that. Everything’s a lot more than I thought it could be, so it’s really fun right now.”

Wouldn’t you have fun, too, if you were good enough to win two different national championships in one month?

Coburn imprinted her name firmly into the ranks of the best female runners in the nation by garnering first-place finishes in the NCAA 3,000-meter steeplechase National Championship and the USA Women’s National Championship in the same race. (A steeplechase is an obstacle race that has four barriers and a water jump that are spaced around the track.)

Coburn’s time of 9 minutes, 41.14 seconds on June 11 at the NCAA Track and Field Championships was enough to hold off her competitors and give her the accolade of best college steeplechaser in the country. Two weeks later, she accomplished an even greater feat, winning the USA Women’s title in 9 minutes, 44.11 seconds.

And to think she just came by running casually.

“I started running track in high school just because my siblings did,” Coburn says. “It was kind of the thing to do, and I just assumed I’d do it in high school. Even in high school I started getting better, but I didn’t think I’d even run in college.”

Even her signature race, the steeplechase, she came across through mere coincidence.

“The summer after my junior year of high school I was going to this meet in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after the season had ended to try to get a time to qualify for nationals in the 800,” she says. “But we didn’t want to go all the way there just to run an 800, so my dad looked at the race schedule, and the only other event that was on a different day than the 800 was the steeplechase. So I just did it. I had never done it before, and I had never seen it. It’s really random how it happened, but I ended up doing pretty well at it at that meet, so from there it worked out.”

A natural talent, Coburn says she has been driven to these spectacular accomplishments by a natural desire to be the best.

“I’m a really competitive person, I guess, and I really like to win,” she says casually. “I really like progressing [in] my fitness. I think that’s motivation, just my competitive nature of wanting to win.

“When it comes down to the serious races, I think it’s just me being competitive and not wanting to lose — me wanting to get off the track knowing that I gave it everything I had and not regretting everything.”

Coburn has been running under the tutelage of CU coaches Mark Wetmore, Heather Burroughs and Billy Nelson.

“I’ve been really lucky to have the coaches that I have,” Coburn says. “Coach Wetmore and Coach Burroughs are pretty incredible when it comes to

the steeplechase … They coached Billy Nelson, who’s an assistant coach for us also, and he won the men’s USA steeple title this year. So they know what they’re doing. I think throughout my college career it’s been really good to be in their hands.”

Considering all of what Coburn has managed to achieve this year, which includes both national titles and a Big 12 Championship in the steeplechase, one would think she might be ready to stop racing for a while.

To the contrary, Coburn has her sights set on even more success in the steeple. She recently was in Europe, racing in two events in Belgium and London, as part of training for this year’s IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

“I’m really, really looking forward to [the World Championships],” she says. “Going to a World Championship is a goal that I never thought was attainable when I came to college.

Even a year ago, I thought it was a long shot. In the past couple months it became more of a reality that I could make it. Then I did make it, but it’s still very surreal.”

No matter how she performs in this year’s World Championship in August, Coburn is set to take in the experience and use it as perspective for later world races, which, if this season is any indication, will be common for the 20-year-old.

“Being on Team USA is really special, so it’s definitely a learning experience, hopefully, for the future if I can make an Olympic team or another World Championship team,” she says. “I think it’s going to be a good experience.”

Heading into her last CU running seasons in both cross-country and track this fall, Coburn wants to finish on a high note. Although cross-country is not her specialty, she is looking for a season of which she can be proud.

“I’ve never been a great cross-country runner,” she says. “Last season I had a great season, and then on the day of nationals, I didn’t have a great race. I’ve never put together a great cross-country season, so I’d really like to put together a respectable cross-country season. Being an all-American in that is always a goal.”

In track, she will look to challenge herself once again and see if she can’t win another national championship.

“Of course, I want to win another NCAA title in the steeplechase before I leave,” she says. “It was nice this year having won a title and having that in my pocket, but I’d like to win another one.”

She’s certainly on the right track.

Rec center getting buffed up

hat tired, worn-down facility on campus where you go to skate, swim, run, climb and play is about to get a muchneeded facelift.

Actually, it will be more like major surgery and some implants.

University of Colorado Boulder students voted last spring to approve a measure that will more than double the existing student recreation fee so that the Recreation Center can undergo a $63.5 million expansion and renovation beginning in May. In fall 2013, students will see between $121 and $125 added to their existing $98-per-semester recreation fee, and that new fee won’t expire for 25 years.

About $25 million of that cost is being set aside just for deferred maintenance on the 38-year-old rec center. But some sexy new amenities are planned as well, including a multiuse gym with indoor turf, an outdoor aquatics and deck area, a wellness/athletic training suite and a state-of-theart climbing and bouldering area.

In addition, plans call for doubling the size of the rec center’s strength and conditioning space and increasing the size of its multi-purpose group fitness studio space. The failing secondfloor ice rink, which has become notorious for dripping water down into the floor below, is going to be reconstructed. And the entire center will be renovated.

The outdoor tennis courts on the rec center’s southeast corner are scheduled to be replaced. Since they are in one of the only footprints for expansion, they are likely to be moved elsewhere.

But rec center Associate Director of Programs Tim Jorgensen stresses that officials have made a commitment to keep the tennis courts somewhere on the main campus.

Jorgensen explains that there are only a couple of areas on the south side of the building where expansion can occur. The expansion limitations have CU officials hoping for some creativity and ingenuity from the archi-

tects who met the Aug. 16 deadline for submitting proposals to take on the project.

The architect will likely be selected in September, and construction is slated to last until late 2013.

Jorgensen says the jury is still out on how things will be reconfigured, but “wayfinding” will be improved.

It will definitely be an enhancement over the current warren of hallways leading to racquetball and squash courts converted into cardio areas, climbing gyms and storage closets. Cost and space limitations will preclude CU from having everything on its recreational wish list; Jorgensen says that while there will be more basketball courts, it won’t be enough to meet the high demand.

According to Jorgensen, CU is not only near the bottom of its university peer group when it comes to recreational facilities, but surveys show that CU students are 10 percent more active than the average college student.

“That’s a bad combination,” he says.

Jorgensen also stresses that the project reflects the will of the students, not the administration.

“Everything that has happened has been driven by student input,” he says.

“It’s not just a bunch of staff sitting around and deciding.”

Students turned out in record numbers for last spring’s election, and about 70 percent said yes to the rec center project, according to University of Colorado Student Government leader Brooks Kanski, vice president for external affairs.

“I think it’s going to be a huge added value to the CU campus,” Kanski says of the rec center project, adding that having a well-balanced college life with strong recreational activities to turn to outside of class is a high priority for his friends and siblings who are looking at state schools.

“I think it’s going to be terrific for recruitment purposes, in regards to continuing to build CU into this toptier academically performing university,” he says. “This is, I think, a missing piece of the puzzle.”

Treasures of the outdoors

et’s be honest, you didn’t really move to Boulder to learn anything from books. OK, well, to learn some from books. But without a doubt, the most valuable lessons you’ll learn — the ones that will shape your life and how you think — will be the ones you learn far from chalkboards and lecterns.

Boulder’s outdoor sports opportunities are enough to dazzle the ordinary humans and draw superhumans to take residence here permanently. But you don’t have to be an ultra runner or a sponsored climber to make the most of what’s right outside your back door.

Boulder lets you study up on becoming an outdoor sports master

Rock climbing Welcome to rock climbing’s mecca. Boulder is home to top climbers who want to live in a pleasant town with world-class climbing a short drive away. Take your choice of either climbing — roping up and using harnesses — or bouldering, climbing low-height “problems” with only shoes, a chalk bag and a pad to crash land on. Climbing routes divide into sport climbs, which involve clipping onto bolts set in the rock, and traditional climbing, which requires climbers to set and remove their protection as they climb.

For those ready and interested to explore the options, a half-hour drive can deliver you to Eldorado Canyon for adventurous traditional climbing and Boulder Canyon for beautiful sport and traditional climbing. A little more time can take you to Clear Creek Canyon for challenging sport routes, or north to Lumpy Ridge, the Monastery, Rocky Mountain National Park and St.Vrain Canyon for a mix of challenging sport and traditional climbing amid breathtaking scenery.

For studying up on climbing, you can put the books away.

“If you’re going to use ropes or gear or anything, you really need instruction,” says Ben Schneider of Fixed Pin Publishing and author of a guidebook for North Table Mountain.

Gyms and outdoors organizations, including the University of Colorado’s Alpine Club, the Colorado Mountain School and the Colorado Mountain Club, host classes and clinics, both indoors and out. CU’s Alpine Club

coordinates trips throughout the year and offers members discounts at climbing gyms.

“Take a really simple intro lesson at the gym,” Schneider recommends.

“It’ll teach you how to belay, tie your knots, and you’ll get to climb slowly in an environment where there’s lots of people around to answer questions.”

For beginning climbers endeavoring into the outdoors, Schneider recommends North Table Mountain, south on Highway 93 in Golden.

“There’s really easy access to top-roping for people who aren’t comfortable leading. For those people who do want to lead, there are really well-bolted lines and really moderate lines that are bolted. … And it’s short stuff,” he says.

Flagstaff Mountain, Mount Sanitas, and those iconic Flatirons all have spots to test out local bouldering.

“It doesn’t really take a lot of experience or anything to do, just shoes and a chalk bag and a pad and go out, as long as you’re careful,” Schneider says.

The basics come down to finding a friend who wants to go, and enjoying yourself along the way.

“The wonderful thing about climbing is that you can go with a friend and you can go and climb 5.4 [relatively easy climbs] all day and have a fantastic time,” Schneider says. “That’s what I think is so great about climbing. It doesn’t really matter how hard you’re climbing as long as you’re having fun.”

Water-soaked sports After a year of record-setting high flows, boaters are going to be able to enjoy getting wet late into the season.

Think: ducking midterms to surf waves around the Front Range.

That’s the thing about Boulder. It’s got its own creek to ride down, a play park for kayakers just developing skills and those becoming aquatic acrobats,

and is well-positioned to access the play parks in Golden and Fort Collins, should you want some variety.

In the past year, stand-up paddle boarding, whitewater’s equivalent of surfing with a paddle to assist, has also taken off as a popular sport.

Eric Bader, Boulder Outdoor Center president/manager, recommends starting on a lake before throwing your board into quickly moving water, and lessons are helpful.

“It’s not a very complicated sport.

There’s just a few safety things we like to teach people so they don’t get hurt right out of the gate,” Bader says.

“People excel at the sport safely and more quickly that way.”

The Boulder Outdoor Center offers lessons and rentals for those curious to try kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding.

“The kayaking, that’s where you really do need to take a lesson,” Bader says. They start on the reservoir before moving to the river, where they will include how to read a river, negotiate rapids and self-rescue.

The Outdoor Center also rents inflatable kayaks — a serious step up from the inner tubes everyone else rides down Boulder Creek on those hot August Saturdays.

For those wanting to float loud and large, the Cache la Poudre River near Fort Collins and Clear Creek out of Golden offer quickly accessible raft trips.

Taking the scenery in twos: two wheels or two feet As one of the most bike-friendly cities in the country, it’s easy enough to just enjoy pedaling around Boulder on a road bike or cruiser.

Road bikers can also make use of almost any highway heading out of town.

One favorite for cyclists is the Peak-toPeak highway, a scenic byway that runs between Estes Park and I-70.The views of the Arapahoe Peaks and the southern face of Long’s Peak, the Front Range skyline’s dominant 14er (14,000-foot-

tall mountain) will take your breath away, if biking at 10,000 feet hasn’t already.

Mountain biking singleand double-track trails tour through former and stilloperating ranches, wander the foothills, and pose some serious challenges as you work to summit them.

Good getting-acclimated loops include the Boulder Valley Ranch loop, a 7-mile beginner route near Boulder Reservoir, and the Marshall Mesa Trail, a 16-mile relatively flat loop south of Boulder off Marshall Drive.

To stick with your two feet, the most affordable of Boulder’s outdoor sports, there are a plethora of trails great for training for tougher accomplishments or just blowing off some post-lecture steam.

The Third Flatiron is a favored trail.

Bear Mountain and Green Mountain also offer challenging treks. Run up north Boulder’s Mount Sanitas if you’re looking to train fast and furious on some serious inclines.

The city of Boulder’s website, www.bouldercolorado.gov, maintains a list of hikes on Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks that’s a good starting point.

Wild adventures When winter rolls around, it’ll be time to get into avalanche classes and learn how to safely navigate the backcountry. Rent your skis, snowboards and snowshoes and explore the white wonderland out the back door. Try cat skiing, heli-skiing or any other number of different forms of snow sliding.

The Boulder Outdoor Center has also started offering snow kiting.

“Snow kiting is basically the equivalent of kite boarding on the snow,” Bader says. Strap on the skis, grab the handle of a kite, and let the wind do the work. “That’s ridiculous amounts of fun.”

After a lesson on a level surface, you can tackle any hillside, skiing uphill, downhill and across the slopes.

“Once you get the hang of it, you can do it any place there’s wind and snow, which is occasionally down here in Boulder,” Bader says.

So gear up and get outdoors to make the most of your college years.

Suor Angelica is a drama of desire set in a 17th century convent, while Gianni Schicchi is a farce based on an incident in Dante’s Divine Comedy. These two operas show the breadth of Puccini’s work, from his haunting melodic talent to his comic skill.

An area full of attractions

f the piles of cool and offbeat things to see and do in and around town, here are a few highlights. Most of them, unsurprisingly, are within mere-mortal cycling range, a few of them farther out, but with all that free time you’re likely to have (ahem), you owe it to yourself to check some of them out. Leave the iPad at the dorm room, chill down a craft beer for later and go explore. And no, we won’t tell anyone you did something as dodgy as actually going to a museum. Or a tea factory.

Buses, tours and museums for getting to know Boulder

Boulder History Museum 1206 Euclid Ave. 303-449-3464 Located in the imposing HarbeckBergheim house a few blocks south of The Hill, the Boulder History Museum features exhibits and programs focusing on Boulder’s 153year history, including clothing and artifacts, rotating its displays two or three times a year. It’s managed by the Boulder Historical Society and is open six days a week (closed Mondays). Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for students. An absolute must.

Banjo Billy’s Bus Tours Starts in front of the Boulderado 720-938-8885 Galumphing around town most days from Memorial Day through Labor Day, the Banjo Billy Tour is the best way to a get slightly fringy introduction to some of Boulder’s neighborhoods, historical figures and offbeat lore. Ghosts, cool old houses and weird stories of boom and bust from Boulder’s surprisingly odd past. Be sure to call in advance for a seat — this is one of Boulder’s most popular attractions, and space fills up quickly.

The Shelby American Collection Museum 5020 Chaparral Ct. 303-516-9565 What?? No Subarus? Carroll Shelby is one of the icons of Ameri-

can auto racing, both behind the wheel and in front of the draftsman’s table. This small museum in Gunbarrel houses some of the most iconic vehicles from Shelby’s rich history, including a 289 Cobra, a couple of 1964 GT 350 Mustangs and a handful of gorgeous GT40s. Open Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., a mere $5 gets you in, and climbing back into the lime green Outback afterward just won’t feel the same.

Celestial Seasonings 4600 Sleepytime Dr. (really) 303-530-5300 After you’ve checked out some of the fastest cars America has ever produced, stop on over at Celestial Seasonings (also in Gunbarrel) for a tour and a spot of tea. One of Boulder’s great success stories from the 1970s, Celestial Seasonings produces eight million tea bags a day, and offers 45-minute tours through their huge facility seven days a week, including a gift shop and a tea sampling room.

Caribou Off County Road 128 northwest of Nederland Perched up near the Divide and known as “the place where winds are born,” Caribou was once home to almost 3,000 residents, living off the rich silver mine discovered there in 1861. The town had a church, three saloons and its own newspaper. The mine eventually played out and devastating fires in 1879 and 1899 pretty much finished the town off. The last official resident died in 1944, although there is at least one caretaker family looking over the small remaining mine operation there.

It is a classic boom and bust mining town story, about 25 minutes from

Boulder. A few disintegrating shells of buildings remain, as well as the town cemetery, which hosts a mere handful of still-readable stones. There’s a lot of private property around the town site, and the road up there is curvy and a little dangerous for the unwary.

Be careful and respectful if you visit.

James F. Bailey Assay Office Museum 6352 Fourmile Canyon 303-776-8848 A cool and little-known museum up in the tiny community (and former mining camp) of Wallstreet is the Bailey Assay Office Museum.

Miners brought ore samples to the assay office to determine how rich a vein was and thus approximate the value of their claim. The Bailey Assay Office was owned by the Bailey family from 1907 to 2001. Now owned

by Boulder County, it contains artifacts from the early days of the hard rock mining industry that played such a major part in the settlement of the Boulder Valley and the foothills. The small facility is open to the public on the third Saturday of every month, June through October, but can accommodate larger tours by appointment.

NCAR / NOAA NCAR: 1850 Table Mesa Dr., 303497-1174 NOAA: 325 Broadway, 303-4973333 Breath in, breath out. It’s all about air.

NCAR, the National Center for Atmospheric Research, probably wins the world grand prize for best lab location. Perched up near Devil’s Thumb at the edge of the foothills in a facility designed by renowned architect I.M. Pei, NCAR is the leading atmospheric research organization in

the nation. Not a government agency, it is managed by a consortium of University research groups, and its primary sponsor is the National Science Foundation. From up at the Mesa lab, you can cop an awesome view of the town of Boulder and the plains stretching eastward, and there’s trail hiking even if you decide to pass on the tour.

NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is a division of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and is probably the pre-eminent weather prediction and weather research organization in the United States.

Both facilities are open to the public and offer guided tours.

Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art 1750 13th St. 303-443-2122 The BMoCA was founded in 1972 and is located in an old warehouse building in the heart of downtown Boulder. It features exhibitions by local and international artists in its 12,000 square feet, parceled into three galleries. Admission is free every Saturday and Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. during the Farmers’ Market.

Leanin’ Tree Museum and Sculpture Garden of Western Art 6055 Longbow Dr. 303-530-1442 One of the best small museums of Western art in the nation, the Leanin’ Tree Museum features more than 250 paintings and 150 bronze sculptures from the private collection of Ed Trumble, founder and CEO of the Leanin’ Tree greeting card company, started in 1949.

Grown from a small partnership between Trumble and the late Bob Lorenz selling cards to cowboys and ranchers, the company today ships more than 20 million cards a year.

The museum is open every day of the year except holidays, and admission is free.

A run-down of the best places for drink and appetizer specials

oulder has a reputation for being one of the best foodie towns in America. And what goes with food? Drink. It stands to reason that the city is home to some spectacular drinks and drink specials. Put those together with appetizers and small plates, and you have happy hour — a time to relax Boulder Cafe with your friends and enjoy yourself.

Here’s a quick overview of the city’s most popular places to spend happy hour.

Praised for its elegance and happy hour accessibility, The Mediterranean Restaurant — called The Med and located at 1002 Walnut St. — is a multiple “Best Happy Hour” winner in Boulder Weekly’s annual Best of Boulder awards. Its reputation makes it almost unnecessary to mention in an article like this — within a week of living in Boulder, someone, somewhere, will tell you how you absolutely must go to The Med for tapas hour (3-6:30 p.m., every day). Happy hour menus are rarely this extensive.

The food is delicious, and the tapas plates go between $2 and $5.25. Grab a table on the patio, a pitcher of Sangria and a group of friends to share with, and you have a perfect way to kill a lazy September afternoon.

A little more under the radar, but still a great way to enjoy gourmet food and drink at good prices, is Brasserie Ten Ten, 1011 Walnut St. (3-6:30 p.m. every day). Brasserie Ten Ten’s happy hour menu features

options that will satisfy even the pickiest eater, such as the $3 gourmet sliders and $3 frites (that’s the fancy term for French fries). For the more adventurous palate, Brasserie Ten Ten offers $2 olive tapenade and moules (steamed mussels) for $4.

Laudisio, at 1710 29th St., is a Boulder institution, and its happy hour is so popular you may find yourself waiting for a seat. The specials run until 7:30 p.m., so customers have a bit more time to sip and enjoy. Plus, $4.75 personal pizzas and a $4.50 house red wine that brings a good name to the phrase “house wine” are well worth the wait.

OK, so you’ve impressed your date by taking her to the fancy French restaurant. Now it’s time to have a little fun. For me, the worst part of happy hour is that it ends so quickly.

Thankfully, Boulder Café is very liberal with their usage of the term “hour.”

In addition to some great food deals, drinks — including virtually all draft beers — are half off from 3 p.m. until close, seven days a week. Basically, if you show up at Boulder Café during any hour in which it is socially acceptable to drink, you will get your drinks at a severely discounted price.

Or, you could just skip all the pretenses and head straight to the Goose (3-6 p.m., every day) on The Hill. With an outdoor patio, well drinks and $5 Bud pitchers, it’s a great option when you just want to get away with friends, have a bite to eat and a pitcher.

For one, it’s cheaper. Also, it’s simple to manage — buy grains and beans in bulk and have a plentiful supply of fruits and vegetables, and you’re good to go. Switching to more whole foods is also healthy (lowers blood pressure, cholesterol etc.).

“Veganism is about syncing up our values of kindness, mercy, justice to our everyday choices,” Shapiro says. “Every time we sit down to eat we can take a stand for compassion, sustainability and non-violence.”

Explore the Center for Sex Positive Culture. The center is on a mission to build a society in which sexuality is recognized as a normal, healthy part of life.

“As a culture, we look at sexuality as something which is shameful and dirty — we’re obsessed with sex because we can’t just talk openly and honestly about it,” Kari Sutton, a CSPC board member, says. “Being sex positive lets people really own their bodies and their desires. When we believe that sex is healthy and normal, we can begin truly exploring the things that feel good for us.”

The local chapter of this Seattlebased organization puts on events ranging from polyamory discussion groups and nonviolent communication workshops to sex toy extravaganzas and kinky dance parties.

“We aren’t here to tell people how to explore and enjoy their sexuality, we’re here to help people bring their own vision into reality,” Sutton says.

Try Out Boulder! One of the main organizations for the LGBTQ community, Out Boulder works to educate the public, as well as create a safe environment for self-expression and support in the area.

“Out Boulder is committed to a community experience that includes allied organizations and allies, knowing that we cannot succeed without a true community effort,” says Aicila Lewis, executive director of Out Boulder. “Students are an important and vital part of the Boulder community and provide valuable insight, leadership and skills to the work we are doing.”

Their biggest event of the year is their annual PrideFest coming up Aug. 28, including performances by American Idol finalist Frenchie Davis and emceed by fancy Ms. Eda Bagel. An after-party (18 and up) at the Absinthe House (11th and Walnut) will wrap up the night, featuring Number Station, Cougarpants and Girls Walk By. Bands start at 6 p.m.

Other Out Boulder events include a Sunday running group, coffee socials, happy hours, a gay man’s figure drawing class, barn dances, pool parties, workshops, art shows and much more.

Also check out Prop Gay. Unfortunately, there are no gay bars in Boulder. So, on the last Friday of every month, Prop Gay creates one. At 10 p.m. the LGBTQ community collectively descends on a select bar and takes it over.

“Prop Gay is its own thing. It’s very much for the people, by the people,” Director Camren Von Davis says. “It’s a town-wide celebration of diversity and unifying over difference. We unify in a fun way — we drink, dance and have a gay old time.”

What about culture?

Explore the Romanian Festival on Sept. 3 on the Pearl Street Mall. This festival, coordinated by the Romanian American Freedom Alliance, was started immediately after the 1989 revolutions in Eastern Europe that opened borders to tourism and cultural exchanges.

“It has become a popular yearly event,” co-organizer Sebastian Doreanu says. “It features ethnic music, lively folk dances — where everyone can join in — and delicious food, including breads, fruit cakes and an all-time favorite, stuffed cabbage rolls.”

Though the town’s most prominent features are majestic, made of rock and tower over the city, Boulder also offers a surprisingly vibrant music scene. The big local draws in this town are jam bands, folk music and bluegrass (not to mention hybrids like jamgrass), and the student population ensures a healthy offering of underground hip-hop, indie rock and electronic dance music. Here are some places you can check out to hear some live tunes.

Boulder Theater The historic Boulder Theater is one of Boulder’s classier places to catch a show, as well as the largest.

The 1,000-person venue was built as an opera house in 1906 and redesigned to its current layout in 1936.

Seeing a show here is like stepping into an art deco time capsule, marked by the brightly colored exterior and internal wall decorations. While the bulk of events hosted at the Boulder Theater are concerts, the theater is also a great spot to catch a movie, and it hosts some of Boulder’s most cherished film events: the Boulder International Film Festival; the raucous, multi-day premiere of each year’s Warren Miller film; and screenings of The Big Lebowski, where bathrobes

Fox Theatre Operated by Z2, the same company that runs the Boulder Theater, the Fox Theatre is located in the middle of The Hill area, which means you might end up seeing shows there quite a bit. The Fox is where you’ll see the bulk of the hip-hop acts that come through town, and when the lights get low, the music loud and the bodies moving, you truly understand what a pleasure it is to see a show there. Astroland If you’re the type who prefers Michele Gondry to Michael Bay or A.A. Bondy to Coldplay, then Astroland is probably your type of venue. A D.I.Y. spot founded and operated by a group of determined CU students, Astroland hosts a smorgasbord of events ranging from local punk acts and DJs to poetry readings and the occasional out-of-state touring act.

Astroland is housed in a warehouse in North Boulder, but the zany, artist-studio-feel of the interior gives the warehouse the ambience that’s worth making the trek and enduring, especially in the summer, the lack of proper air circulation.

Laughing Goat Something about Boulder brings out the soulful songwriter in people, as evidenced by the many singersongwriters practicing their craft at the Laughing Goat on any given night of the week. The Laughing Goat, on Pearl Street, is a coffee shop by day and a booze-serving music room by night. On Mondays, there is an open mic. On Tuesdays there is jazz and, on the first Thursday of the month, a band called Ginga plays infectious Brazilian dance music. In between, you get singer-songwriters from Boulder and beyond and a peppering of smaller touring acts. The place serves great drink specials during happy hour, and the coffee is pretty darn good, too.

Shug’s Low Country Cuisine Shug’s Low Country Cuisine, located in the heart of downtown one block west of the Boulder Theater, is a restaurant/venue hybrid. The restaurant serves up a variety of Cajun and Southern food, and the fried chicken comes highly recommended. But walk through the restaurant to the back of the building, and you’ll find what makes Shug’s special — a warm, intimate (roughly) 90-person room that hosts live music, complete with a separate bar. Chautauqua Auditorium A stately, all-wood performance hall, Chautauqua Auditorium is perched on a hill in quaint Chautauqua Park, located a short walk from the Hill. The auditorium was built in 1898 and is a classy place for live music. This summer, people like Andrew Bird, Los Lobos, Los Lonely Boys, Josh Ritter and k.d. lang have already stopped by, and the auditorium also hosts clas-

sical music during the months-long Colorado Music Festival. It’s only open during the warm spring and summer months, though, so the window during which you could catch a show is rapidly closing. If you do manage to see a show here, though, make sure to bring a bottle of water, because the summer heat combined with the ancient construction of the place make air circulation a little more than wishful thinking. During the winter, concerts move inside to the nearby Chautauqua Community House.

The Nomad Theatre, located in North Boulder, hosts theater and the occasional concert (1410 Quince Ave., Boulder, 303-443-7510). For the over-21 crowd, The Mountain Sun (1535 Pearl St., 303-546-0886) usually hosts live music on Sundays, and its sister pub, The Southern Sun (627 S. Broadway, 303-543-0886) often has bands playing on Monday.

Think jam bands making funky dance grooves. Amplified local talent Open mics let listeners find the diamonds in the rough

dam Chiarelli finishes his set on a Sunday afternoon open mic night at Folsom Street Coffee.

The crowd is silent for a moment, not quite wanting to break the spell that Chiarelli has cast over the room. Finally, Chiarelli does it for them.

“So, does anybody want to go see Harry Potter with me after the show?”

Chiarelli asks, a little shyly.

There was a time when coffee shops were community gathering spaces, a sanctuary from the cold, fast world outside. But technology has gradually turned everywhere people go into a mini-office, and thus coffee shops have changed from a place where people come together to an individual workspace.

It’s a wonder that any coffeehouse at all still puts on open mic nights, once a staple of the coffee scene.They are loud, occasionally grating, and anything but conducive to creating the ideal work environment. But they are also a great reminder of what we are missing in our electronic world, and that sometimes it’s best to just shut your laptop and listen to the skinny kid with the acoustic guitar pour his heart out. Hell, he might have something good to say.

The open mic at Folsom Street gives performers and fans that warm and fuzzy “this moment belongs to me” feeling that is next to impossible to get at big venues with established artists.

The small-stage, single PA set-up is pure classic coffeehouse open mic, and there is a section of the shop that doesn’t face the stage (for those who would rather put on a pair of headphones and get some work done), so performers won’t be singing to an uninterested audience tapping on their laptops.The result is a modest, but rapt, crowd of fellow performers and fans.

The Laughing Goat is home to one of the most popular open-mic nights in town. Each Monday, the Goat hosts “So You Think You’re a Poet,” with open poetry readings.You never know who might show up — a published author, a Naropa student, your roommate.The Goat has live music or other events

every night, making it a true gathering place for locals.

Not quite as intimate, but still a great place to play or watch an open mic, is the Rock N Soul Cafe on Monday nights. Rock N Soul is a dedicated performance venue, meaning artists have the benefit of a sound check and a guy manning the soundboard.The stage is large enough to accompany a full band, but small enough to not overwhelm a first-timer. More new performers have been taking the stage than at Folsom Street, but killer sets from jam-rock band Lazy Lightning (look out for these guys in the future) and a random girl visiting from San Francisco made this a great venue for people wanting to catch a diamond in the rough.

No list of open mic nights in Boulder would be complete without mentioning the great open bluegrass picks that take place in venues around the county.

Bluegrass is the genre of choice for many crunchy Boulderites, and Conor O’Neill’s offers a lively open pick on Wednesday nights. Often there is a competitive element about open mic nights that is a little unsavory, with performers sizing up each other to see where they stand in the pecking order. Open bluegrass picks are great because there is no pecking order — everyone is just creating music together.These guys are all pretty seasoned players, however, so if you are planning on joining the circle, make sure you can keep up.

The world may have changed, but there is still something exciting about discovering homegrown talent at local open mic nights. Maybe Lazy Lightning or Adam Chiarelli won’t ever make it big, but for one night, they captured the attention of a live audience. Entertaining someone on the Internet is easy — but being able to get a roomful of busy people to shut their laptops and just listen, well, that’s pretty special.
