Danish misses point On Boulder’s electricity municipalization issue (“Municipal power is cheap in Longmont, but not in Boulder,” Danish Plan, July 28), Paul Danish writes that Boulder will face much higher costs than the Longmont municipal power utility because of Boulder’s priority on renewable energy. He attributes this higher potential cost to the present differential between coal and renewable sources, but it does not follow that Boulder will pay more.

Unfortunately he misses the fundamental distinction between base-load generation and renewable generation. A basic paradigm shift is taking place in electricity today. Since the beginning of electricity over 100 years ago, the dominant paradigm has been based on a dependency on steady-state, fixed, baseload generation using coal or nuclear plants that are not (and cannot be) quickly turned up or down. Quickresponse natural gas-fired turbines have been mainly used as a “peaking” source to back up the coal baseload when sudden demand arises.

However, a new paradigm is now emerging that is based on renewable sources that are inherently variable, distributed and unpredictable. Renewables must be complemented only by quickresponse backup sources such as gas turbines, hydro or storage sources. In shifting to renewables, the concept of baseload generation becomes fundamentally incompatible with renewable generation because the base-load generation is inflexible and requires that renewables

As a corporate dogmatist, Scott hates, hates, hates, anything having to do with public health care.

Then there’s money to provide hospice care for severely ill low-income children, in-home counseling to curb child abuse, education on preventing teen pregnancies, expansion of community health centers, and state prevention of rip-off premium hikes by insurance giants — all rejected by the governor.

It’s not these programs that “don’t fit” Florida — it’s Rick Scott. His fraudulent insistence that health care is best left to corporate profiteers helps to explain why only a third of Floridians approve of the job he’s doing.

Tim Schoechle/Boulder In his article on Aug. 11, Paul Danish thinks he smells a rat — “several in fact.” (“Banning corporate personhood would destroy U.S. economy,” Danish Plan.) Unfortunately, he never follows up on this analogy — just as he fails to supply any logic to his bizarre and exaggerated claims regarding the economy and politics. I would like to point out how they are without merit, and seem to be based on emotion and myth rather than logic and fact.

I would also like to point out that I am the primary organizer for the Move To Amend affiliate in Boulder, part of the national organization (movetoamend.org), and so felt at pains to respond to Mr Danish.

The myths that Danish seeks to promote are multiple and, frankly, outlandish; here’s a summary: • that banning corporate personhood would destroy the economy • that liberals seek to “rig American election laws in their favor” • that corporate personhood is one of the “defining characteristics of the corporation” • that corporate personhood is “tightly bound up with ... limited liability” • that corporate personhood “made possible ... capital accumulation that gave birth to ... the industrial revolution and the modern economy” • that banning corporate personhood would inhibit corporations’ ability to raise capital and therefore “stick a dagger into the heart of the American economy” and as a result we “would be plunged back into the 17th century” • that such a referendum is “an allout attack on the American economic system” Not one of these statements is even remotely true, as anyone familiar with the economic history of the United States knows. Were this a magazine Boulder Weekly

article instead of a newspaper letter, there might be space to cite all the evidence to soundly refute them.

Instead, I would like to point out to Mr. Danish, and his proud libertarian ways, that the American revolution was in large part fought against large English corporations that monopolized the colonial economy on behalf of an English king, and whose soldiers enforced that economic order. Thus it was that corporations were kept on a very short leash for the first 75 years of our country’s existence, and I believe our economy did just fine. It was not until the post-Civil War era, when the railroad barons sought to enlarge their empires, that corporate lawyers began to establish, solely by court precedent, the legal fiction that corporations are entitled to constitutional rights. Such corporate “personhood” has never been voted on by any American legislative body, anytime, anywhere, and the word “corporation” is not mentioned at all in the Constitution, nor in any of its amendments, nor in the Declaration of Independence.

Unfortunately, we seem to now be in the position of again mounting a revolution to retake our economy back, this time from a plutocratic corporate elite instead of corporations charted by an English king, who seeks not only to dominate our economy and our culture, but our political and legal system as well. Not to mention periodically wrecking the national economy with their speculative investing, and sucking the blood out of the middle class through slashing of services, outsourcing of jobs and wage repression in every possible way.

The Citizens United ruling by the Supreme Court, which allowed corporations to donate unlimited amounts of money to politics, and said that by doing so corporations are exercising their First Amendment rights, which they are as fully entitled to as any

he Colorado Court of Appeals has ruled that elected officials can vote by secret ballot on controversial issues, even during public meetings. Specifically, the court upheld the dismissal by a lower court of a lawsuit against the City of Fort Morgan, claiming that the Colorado Open Meetings Law (COML), nicknamed the “Sunshine Law,” did not prohibit government bodies from hiding their votes from the people who elected them.

The Sunshine Law, Colorado Revised Statute 24-6-101 to 24-6-402, was passed in 1972 by the voters who placed it on the state ballot. It is a law by the people and for the people. In sum, it states that the public’s business has to be conducted in public. Period.

Fort Morgan resident Ronald Henderson filed the suit after Fort Morgan City Council members cast anonymous ballots when they voted to fill two open seats on the council and appoint a municipal judge. Henderson was right to file suit. If left unchallenged, it would have created a prece-

dent if not in the law then in people’s minds, inuring them to the erosion of their rights.

Without laws like the Sunshine Law, politicians would be able to treat voters like proverbial mushrooms, keeping them in the dark and feeding them a steady diet of bullshit. They would be able to debate issues in private far from the public’s gaze, then make up stories about their actions. They would be able to make secret deals with special interest groups. They might even be able to turn a nice little profit.

Doing the people’s business in public helps to keep politicians clean, especially on a local level. This explains why the Sunshine Law is popular with voters, but not quite as popular with elected officials, some of whom want the authority that comes with holding office but aren’t too keen on being held accountable for their actions.

Take the Fort Morgan City Council, for example. Its members apparently wanted to be able to choose a judge and two fellow council members without having to suffer any blowsee SECRET VOTES Page 8

The officials said, “In 50 years, you won’t see any scarring from this work.”

They took the long view, didn’t mind leaving a huge visual mess. This meant we would be stuck with a horrible mess in the forests around us for the rest of our lives. The plan prescribed mechanical treatment and a five-acre patch cut on our property line. Patch cuts are landing zones for quarter-acre piles of logs and slash. I began to consider legal action.

We attended another meeting, with our regional forester, Christina Walsh. I asked her if it were possible to do a private/public partnership for the treatment of the mountain behind us. I was willing to invest $20,000 in reducing the damage by doing hand-thinning.

She responded, “I’ll have to look into it.” I told her, “It will cost me that much to sue you and make you do the right thing. I would rather invest that money in a solution, rather than a fight.” The conversation ended. Yet, in the final plan, patch cuts on our side of the mountain disappeared. So, I dropped the matter.

I exercised my legal rights as a citizen in this process. Describing it as you did implies corruption. I take offense at the implication.

Demographers tell us that due to Muslim immigration and high birth rates, Muslims will become the majority population in Europe during the 21st century. As a consequence, male circumcision will become the rule, not the exception, in Europe. With that said, I suspect the issue of male circumcision will be the least of native Europeans’ worries as they try to cope with being a minority living under some form of

“Sharia” (Islamic law) in their own countries.

Masturbating monkeys I read Pamela White’s article titled “To cut or not to cut” (Uncensored, June 23) on male circumcision that accompanied the phallic cover by Susan France. The history of Dr. John Harvey Kellogg is a fascinating glimpse into America’s masturbation aversion of the late 19th century and the use of circumcision to eliminate this “evil” practice. I have a copy of Plain Facts for the Old and Young, dated 1882, by Dr. Kellogg.

On pages 428-429, under the heading “A Dreadful Sin,” is the following: “The sin of self-pollution is one of the vilest, the basest, and the most degrading that a human being can commit. It is worse than beastly. Those who commit it place themselves far below the meanest brute that breathes. The most loathsome reptile, rolling in the slush and slime of its stagnant pool, would not demean itself thus. It is true Boulder Weekly

Hearing on district lines Aug. 23 The Board of County Commissioners is conducting a survey on proposed district boundaries for Boulder County and will hold a public hearing on Aug. 23.

Per state statute, county commissioners’ districts must be revised after each census to assure roughly equal populations per district. Boulder County is divided into three districts, and one commissioner is elected from each district by the whole county.

Even though commissioners are elected countywide, they must reside in the district that they represent, meaning that each commissioner must live in a unique district from the other two.

The hearing will be held at 3 p.m. in the Commissioners Hearing Room at the Courthouse in Boulder, at 1325 Pearl St. Four district options have been developed and are available for review and comment. Residents may also suggest alternate options through the online survey or at the public hearing on Aug. 23.

A mother’s right The American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU Women’s Rights Project announced on Monday, Aug. 15, that they plan to file a lawsuit against Rocky Mountain Academy of Evergreen, a charter school, on behalf of Heather Burgbacher, a technology teacher who says she was fired for pumping breast milk during school hours.

No, Ms. Burgbacher wasn’t pumping her breasts in front of her students or other faculty. She wasn’t filming it and putting it up on YouTube. Instead, she took three 20-minute breaks during the day, leaving another adult to supervise her students, so that she could pump breast milk for her baby in private. But her supervisors were still unhappy.

Burgbacher says one of them told her that the school would not accommodate her pumping and suggested she switch her baby to formula. But Burgbacher refused to stop and was fired in February. According to Burgbacher, her supervisor made it clear she was fired for continuing to pump breast milk.

If Burgbacher’s allegations prove to be true, Rocky Mountain Academy has not only discriminated against this dedicated mother, but also violated state law.

The Workplace Accommodations for Nursing Mothers Act, which was carried largely by Democrats and signed into law in 2008, protects the right of working mothers to pump milk so that they can hold a job and still feed their babies. After all,

many mothers must return to work after their piddling eight-week maternity leave. If they’re going to keep nursing their infants, they must be able to pump breast milk, or milk production slows.

It’s bad enough that any institution would ignore state law. But what’s even more outrageous is any employer believing he or she has the right to interfere in the relationship between a mother and her baby. Breast milk is superior to formula in every respect, and nursing is an important part of the bond between mother and child. Burgbacher ought to have been praised for continuing to breastfeed, not fired.

Kudos to the ACLU and the ACLU Women’s Rights Project for standing up for mothers.

His criminal record includes at least five arrests for sexual assault on a child, as well as a felony conviction for sexual assault on a child. Now facing allegations of sexual assault against a 10-year-old boy, Holman is once again behind bars.

But for how long?

In the wake of the Jaycee Duggard story, it seems clear that the criminal justice system can’t keep tabs on these guys any better than it can determine which ones still pose a risk to children.

Given that the recidivism rate among sex offenders is generally higher than that of other criminals, we’re happy to offer a more effective solution.

Let’s lock the bastards up and throw away the key.

he City of Boulder has ramped up its enforcement of the city’s rental licensing code, targeting property owners who are illegally leasing units to renters.

While the effort has a long way to go, it is a timely development as University of Colorado students pour back into town, entering new rental leases.

As part of the SmartRegs program, this summer the city created a half-time position dedicated to investigating landlords who are renting out their property without a license.

While SmartRegs has been best known for imposing energy-efficiency requirements, Kirk Moors, the city’s acting chief building official, says city council also wanted to make sure those new regulations were applied broadly — not just to ensure that all landlords are treated fairly and equally, but to maximize the program’s effect on greenhouse gas reduction by enlarging the number of participants. Hence, the launch of a pilot program to identify unlicensed landlords and bring them into the fold.

Terry Steinborn, who has worked for the city for more than 30 years, most recently as an environmental enforcement officer, took on the new “rental licensing compliance specialist” role on June 1.

“We’ve never had somebody that’s just dedicated to rental license enforcement,” Moors says, “and as other enforcement priorities come up, we just haven’t had a consistent program that worked that issue.”

According to Moors, the program initially involved reaching out to suspected violators with an educational effort. The city sent letters to landlords in question, informing them of the city’s rental licensing requirements. If they didn’t respond within 30 days, they received a more strongly worded letter.

While city officials say there was a high response rate (70 percent) associated with the letters, those who don’t respond and who are found to be illegally renting out their property can face Boulder Weekly

a $250 fine, or “investigation fee.”

Earlier this year, city officials identified about 520 cases that need investigation, either through complaints received or staff research, and Moors says approximately 20 percent of those cases have been resolved.

The rental licensing crackdown, and the rest of the SmartRegs program, will be a topic at the Boulder City Council’s Aug. 23 study session.

According to study session materials distributed Aug. 16, of the 100 cases that have been closed, 25 people voluntarily obtained licenses without requiring a visit from Steinborn. But 15 property owners were slapped with violations and the $250 fine (in addition to being required to obtain a license). The rest were cleared, primarily because they were found to be owner-occupied (27 cases).

According to Moors, others were determined to be exempt from the licensing requirements because the property was occupied by a relative, for instance, or had been physically modified to be a single-family home.

Another 20 percent, or 95 of the 520 cases, are still under investigation, leaving 331 cases in the backlog.

In addition to the $250 fine, officers have the discretion to issue administrative fees and civil penalties in the amount of $150 for the first violation, $300 for the second and $1,000 for the third. In extreme cases, an officer can issue a vacate order, revoke the rental license or issue a criminal summons, which carries a fine of $500 to $2,000 and/or up to 90 days in jail.

But the crackdown wasn’t driven by a desire to raise revenue for the city, Moors says. The rental licensing program only covers 60 percent of its costs through its fines and fees.

“It’s never been a money-making proposition for the city,” he explains.

To keep up with rising costs and maintain its 60 percent cost recovery requirement, the cost of a rental license was raised from $15 to $46 in 2003, and then up to $70 last January.

Steinborn’s salary is $37,138, according to Moors, and her half-time status will be re-evaluated after one year to see if the workload expands enough to justify making it a full-time position.

Once Steinborn works through the extensive backlog of cases, he says, she will be able to reduce the response time

to complaints. Her salary is expected to be covered by revenues raised from the $250 fines, according to Moors.

“The fees assessed are on target for supporting the costs of the position,” the study session materials state.

“However, there is a concern that as the easier ‘low hanging fruit’ types of cases are resolved, it may be difficult to assess enough fees to completely fund the position as time progresses.”

The rental licensing program, which was launched in 1973 on the heels of the city’s 1968 housing code, is one of a kind in the county. According to officials at other local municipal governments, some cities, like Longmont, have some mediation services available for landlord-tenant relations, but none have the same code or enforcement as Boulder does.

“You can rent an outhouse if you want to,” says Claire Hunter, a consumer specialist in the Boulder district attorney’s office, which handles violations of state law that arise out of landlord/tenant disputes or health and safety issues.

State legislators passed a bill in 2008, HB 1356, targeting landlord/tenant relations.

Hunter says that while her office does field many calls complaining about landlord/tenant relations, the DA does not offer landlord/tenant mediation.

She says one common inquiry involves how much notice a landlord has to give a tenant before entering a rental unit, which is not specifically defined in state law and can vary from lease to lease.

Boulder has separate checklists for baseline inspections, when the rental license is first issued, and for renewal inspections, which occur every four years. During the four-year inspections, officers check for basic life safety, mechanical and electrical requirements.

Prospective tenants can use a city website (http://1.usa.gov/propertylookup) to look up an address to see if it’s properly licensed as a rental property.

The circumstances are different, but Americans are as uneasy and uncertain about the future as they have been in any time since the tumultuous ’60s and early ’70s.

During that era, the counterculture youth put all their hopes on a reclusive folk singer from Greenwich Village. He sang “The Times They Are a-Changin’,” and a generation believed every word. When the load got too heavy and Dylan broke down, many broke down with him. The ’60s crashed, and everyone dropped out, hopped The Carolina Chocolate in their VWs and followed a Drops group of peace-loving hippies from Haight-Ashbury around the country. power of the fest. Three days under the hot sun, with not enough water and (maybe) too many other substances while watching Bob Weir and Chris Robinson jam out as the sun sets over the main stage tend to lead to some mini-epiphanies.

That, coupled with the self-sustaining community that a three-day fest creates, has turned festivals like Rocky Mountain Folks Fest into lifedefining cultural events for many people.

“There’s something about a festival, being able to collaborate with other artists,” says Sarah Lee Guthrie, who would go to festivals with her father, Arlo Guthrie (a Woodstock alum) while growing up. “The energy is high, and it makes me high. It’s really beautiful.”

Which makes one wonder — how do festival-goers keep that energy, beauty and the feeling of cultural unity for the other 362 days of the year? Is there anything tangible we can take back from festivals, or will all the good vibes die out shortly after Jackson Browne closes out his encore on Sunday night? If we truly are in the new ’60s, as Sexton believes, shouldn’t we strive to take some of that vibe back with us into our communities?

For some, Sunday night at the Rocky Mountain Folks Fest will be an ending. The ending of the festival, the ending of three days spent in a fantastic bubble away from the problems of everyday life. When Sunday night flips over to Monday morning, the real world will come knocking once more.

For others, however, Sunday night will be just the beginning. Festivals have a way of cultivating rapid relationships. Scores of concertgoers will leave Lyons on Sunday night with new projects to work on, new collaborators to work with, and a renewed creative spark spawned by the music on stage, the people they met and the feeling in the air. Guthrie, for one, recalls how she was reluctant to pursue a career in music, despite (or perhaps because of ) her lineage, until she worked as a road

manager for her father on Further Fest tour in 1997.

“I tried to avoid (being a musician) with all my might,” Guthrie says. “I was a total punk rock chick as a teenager. I wasn’t that into playing music until much later in life. But then I met Johnny, and I met Chris Robinson at this festival that my dad was in, and it turned me on to the idea of looking for a good song.”

Guthrie and Irion married in 1999, and the two have been performing together since 2000.

Guthrie has managed to create her own place in music, with the duo’s latest album Bright Examples straying away from the straight folk of her father and grandfather (the legendary Woody Guthrie, who passed before Sarah Lee was born), and settling into laid-back, cosmic country ala Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. For Guthrie, connecting with the right people at a festival altered the path of her life.

The Carolina Chocolate Drops are another group who owe their roots to a festival. At the 2005 Black Banjo Gathering, Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson all met and studied under old-time fiddler Joe Thompson, and an instant bond was formed. Flemons, Giddens and Robinson took what they learned from Thompson, settled down in North Carolina and planted the seed for what would become the Carolina Chocolate Drops.

“We were all playing somewhat inter-related music at the time, but we really connected at the Black

“We all really bonded over the idea of reaching back to the past and fetching that music and bringing it back to the future.”

For the Chocolate Drops, it seems like a light was switched on at the Black Banjo Gathering.

They have been fine-tuning their sound ever since, winning critical acclaim (as well as a Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album for their 2010 release Genuine Negro Jig), while reaching deeper into the past and further into the future.

They’ve become an integral part of the string band revival, updating the old-time sound while opening the doors for listeners to discover vast contributions to the genre made by old-time AfricanAmerican string bands. Flemons talks about unpacking the American identity through its music, tracing the roots of a nation through its cultural contributors.

“How do you modernize this old music?” Flemons asks himself.

“Well, I think just being a modern person playing this music contemporizes it. The first wave of groups who did the old-time stuff were much more militant about being traditional, but now, because of availability of their recordings and of some of the original recordings, you want to update it a little bit.

But when people hear this music, because it’s so different from pop, they embrace it and they say, ‘Look at this music. Look at how American it is.’ Especially people like myself, struggling to figure out the American identity.” see FOLKS FEST Page 17

If music really is a window into the American identity, then festivals like the Rocky Mountain Folks Fest offer the best opportunity to peek in through that window. Our visionaries are no longer played on the radio, and the radio has long lost its cultural relevance anyhow (perhaps these two circumstances are related?). I’m often left with the feeling that when our culture does rally around something, it’s usually to denigrate trash-art rather than celebrate something worthwhile (Rebecca Black would be nodding her head, if you, know, 14-year-old internet sensations/punching bags from Anaheim read Boulder alt-weeklies.) But the festival season gives us a chance to come together to celebrate all the great music that’s being created just outside the mainstream radar. It may not have the vast cultural relevance of seeing Dylan and Joan Baez at Newport in ’63, but it offers a rare opportu-

nity to share something special with thousands of others, strangers and friends alike.

“The beautiful thing about music,” says Sexton, “and one of the reasons why I’m so blessed to be able to do what I do, is how it helps people get together for the betterment of humanity.”

Ultimately, the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival is just a festival. It’s not going to get us out of Afghanistan or restore our sterling credit rating. And hell, for fans, it has probably got more chance of putting you in debt than getting you out of it. We’re long since past the days when a single music festival can change the world. But anytime people come together during troubled times and celebrate that which is worth celebrating, anytime ideas are shared and creative fires lit, well, that’s a tradition worthy of our collective cultural gaze.

At the Aug. 19 event, he’ll be stacking his eco-town up with ideas for public shower systems, healthy popcorn, $10 solar panels and a condom brand that donates a condom for every one sold.

Prairie Sage is designed to consist of some 300 hand-built, materially and energy-efficient homes arrayed around a town center somewhere between Denver and Fort Collins. The plan as it currently exists will include a pair of organic farms, car-free “ped ways” and free public transportation. The need to commute long distances for work or entertainment will be eliminated. The homes will offer a much more affordable option to living in Boulder, he adds.

Davies, who has studied co-housing for 15 years, stresses that Prairie Sage is something new, not a commune but a collective community with as much privacy or as much interaction as desired. It will work with society in the large sense, because going off the grid, Davies says, can ultimately “cause a big mess,” producing more waste and problems than working with and enhancing the efficiency of pre-existing infrastructure.

Davies says he’s excited to have the opportunity to spread the word about Prairie Sage.

“If we really want to change how we house ourselves in first-world countries,” he says, “it’s important that we seek out low-impact solutions like having fewer streets and smaller homes that people can be happier living in.”

This is the world, its resources stretched thin, beaches laden with shoals of garbage; we are riding one of those black waves toward the edge of the bucket, and something has to change, the voice says.

The voice belongs to Bogusky, and he wants to change the world. Once one of the most important minds in American advertising, Bogusky left his successful ad firm, Crispin Porter + Bogusky, which had turned around the ad campaigns of companies as diverse and gigantic as Burger King, Volkswagen and Virgin Atlantic, to start a capitalist branding revolution: Common.

The idea is that there is no need for branding, because Common will be the brand. It can be used by any participant to market any product. The motto seems to be “collaborative advantage,” not “competitive advantage.”

Launched from Bogusky’s Boulder workshop, Fearless Cottage, Common strikes some as being too idealistic, competition the only realistic way for capitalism to work. Yet as Bogusky says himself in a typically slick promotional video, “I left my agency to get down to the business of imagining a future.”

A future where he could “empower the most powerful economic force in the world — the consumer,” he says.

Common, says Davies, “fits with what I’m doing; it’s a new form of economics ... coming from a grassroots,

ask people what level of intimacy they’re interested in,” Chris Davies says.

Intimacy, however, can mean so many things. In this case, it is the desire of everyday people to live in a sustainable town of energy-efficient homes clustered around a center of cafes, theaters and other small businesses, with organic farms surrounding it all. His concept of an eco-town, called Prairie Sage, is just that, but according to Davies, it can’t be compared to the old-style hippie commune.

“Just because people want to live green, live in a neighborhood designed to be pedestrian-friendly, and have organic interactions, doesn’t mean that they want to have a full-on community of forced intimacy.”

Davies’ eco-town is one of 10 socially motivated concepts to be presented Aug. 19 at the Common Pitch. Billed on its website as “a party to fix the world,” the Common Pitch will bring together some of the “titans of social innovation” at the Boulder Theater for a series of five-minute presentations describing their visions for cutting-edge projects and the ways they will increase social well-being. With food, drinks and a band, Common Pitch evokes the stylish advertising flair of its founder, Alex Bogusky, and his new plan to rewrite the rules of capitalism.

onder Mountain String Band is one of the Boulder area’s most recent, and resounding, success stories.

During the band’s 13-orso-year history, YMSB — guitarist Adam Aijala, bassist Ben Kauffman, mando player Jeff Austin and banjo player Dave Johnston, who all came together in Nederland — has gone from opening for touring acts at the Fox Theatre to headlining massive festivals and selling out Red Rocks Amphitheatre. A bluegrass-based, rock- and pop-influenced string band, all four members sing and write songs, and the result is a busy, energetic form of bluegrass that is as technically impressive as it is a blast to dance to.

Boulder Weekly caught up with Aijala and Johnston before they left for a short tour that stops at Red Rocks and ends at the band’s three-day Harvest Music Festival in Ozark, Ark. Boulder Weekly: So you guys are

working on a new album?

Adam Aijala: Well, sort of. Preproduction stuff. We’ve laid down some tracks, we’ve also done demo versions of songs that we might want to do. I don’t foresee something coming out by the end of this year. We’re gonna have a lot to pick from, which is a nice feeling.

BW: Are you working with the same producer?

Dave Johnston: We don’t have a producer lined up yet. It’s highly unlikely that we would work with Tom [Rothrock] again, but you know, it might be fun to crash his house.

BW: Do you have any plans to use drums this time around?

AA: Ideally, every song that we’ve written that has a drummer, we’ve been able to play it without one. So, it wouldn’t be in our best interest to write a song that requires a drummer, the main reason being that we don’t have a drummer. By us saying that we don’t

have plans for one doesn’t mean that there won’t be one, but it also doesn’t mean that there definitely will be one either.

BW: Do you do anything different to prepare for a Red Rocks show?

AA: Pilates. No, just kidding.

DJ: I feel like I have a lot of pregames. I like to have some coffee …

AA: … Lots of coffee.

DJ: I mean, if I have the time and the space, I like to play really slow and play really boring, fundamental things.

I like to just take a long time warming up. Then usually me and Adam will get together and play some fiddle tunes or something like that. I feel like that’s a typical pre-game for me.

AA: It’s kind of boring, man. I wish I could tell you that we were injecting heroin into our eyes, but nope. That’s not what’s happening (laughs). No one wants to hear that, see YONDER Page 22

though. “I went skydiving! I went skydiving before the gig!”

DJ: I like to light myself on fire with a coat hanger (laughs).

BW: You guys are known for not having a traditional bluegrass sound, drawing from rock and pop despite being a traditional, four-piece string band.

Where do you think your musical direction is heading?

DJ: It’s really pretty hard to tell what we’ll do, even if there will be any massive changes. The traditional aspect of bluegrass will always have a big influence on what we do.

AA: I can speak for myself. I’ve never consciously written something for any express purpose. For me, it’s just a novelty idea or a lyric and you just go from there. We’re always going to have new, high-energy bluegrassy-type songs, because we know those work, and we know we have fun playing them and that the crowd responds in a positive way to those kind of songs.

BW: Could you describe your songwriting process?

DJ: The minute that you start subscribing to a formula or theory about how to write your songs, you’re really hurting yourself. I feel like I will write a lyric, and I’m like, oh, I really enjoy that lyric. Then a couple months later I’ll probably be like, you know, “I really don’t

think I know what the hell I was talking about right there.”

AA: I like to run ideas, at the very least, by Dave. Dave always has a good idea. If I go to him with one line, he’ll have a counter-line within, like, a minute, and that’s the start of the song.

[Lyrically] we have this returning theme of a drifting man [that] every song is about. (Johnston laughs) I mean, we gotta kill him off at some point. He keeps showing up.

DJ: Funny you say that, Adam. I have a death metal song I need to show you.

AA: Lately, I don’t really write story songs, generally. I like to use There Will Be Blood as an example. You all of a sudden just come into this story or situation, there’s no real entrance or exit. Those are my favorite kind of songs, where it’s just kind of out there, as opposed to, like, ‘Hey, I got up today, and you know, the sun came up and the sun went down,” and that’s how the song starts.

DJ: To follow up on what Adam’s saying, if I can be so vulgar, I agree with him. I fucking hate anecdotal songs.

God, they suck. It’s the fucking worst!

You know, this happened and this happened and then this happened, so this. It drives me crazy.

I like the ones that make just enough sense for you to grab on, and you’re like, what the hell’s going on here?

AA: At the same time, I still like “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” by the Beatles, so, there you go (laughs). I like all kinds of music. I still like really cheesy stuff, too.

I’m just saying for myself and what I’m specifically writing, that’s kind of where I’m at right now. But who knows. I might wake up tomorrow and write a song about the eggs I made. I doubt it, though.

DJ: Well, I got a song about eggs and it goes like this. I woke up and went to the refrigerator. And then I cracked open an egg into a bowl. And then I added some milk.

AA: (singing) And then I put on the hot water and I watched the sun set.

DJ: And so the day began. I don’t know anyone who really writes too many anecdotal songs, but when I hear them, I’m like, “Oh god, turn that off.”

BW: Which is more important, the lyrics or the vocal melody?

DJ: Everyone feels differently about it. Some people think a melody is more memorable than a lyric, and some people think lyrics are more important than tuning. I think what you’re saying and how you’re saying it and how you’re expressing yourself has, for me, a lot of individuality; it has a lot of power that’s truly felt. [Sometimes I’ll hear a song and] the way he said that was so balanced sonically, rhythmically, and was so perfectly in line with the rest of that

thought, that it just thrills the crap out of me. And it goes so well with this very strange and underlying melodic thing that’s happening. That shit is so rare, but when it happens, it’s just wonderful.

AA: When I was small, and I was first getting into music, it was always about the melodies; that’s why I liked the songs. As I got older though, it’s become equally important. ... There’s still probably a handful of songs that I have no idea what they’re singing about, but I still really like it. I don’t mind that I don’t know what it means. “I am the Eggman,” you know, fuck yeah. I love that song, I don’t know what the hell it means. “Googoo-ga choo,” you know. No one ever says that about a pop-country singer, like, will someone stop fucking writing about his cowboy boots and the American flag?

You know, you ever read an article that says that? You don’t.

BW: Anything else you’d like to add?

AA: No more Christmas songs.

BW: When’s your Christmas album coming out?

AA: Never.

DJ: Totally the end of the career.

That’s when we’ll know.

AA: Christmas album, that’s so un-PC, man. What about the Jews?

DJ: Actually, I got a Ramadan album coming out today.

obert Earl Keen has long made his own rules. He’s also willing to break them.

The storied songwriter’s upcoming release, Ready For Confetti, was largely written from the road, a taboo decision before now, given Keen’s lack of enthusiasm for joining the road-reflecting artists who are so common.

“Those songs have all been done before,” he says. “The difference between any of the records I’ve made and this one is that I wrote all of these songs on the road. There’s only one I didn’t write, which is a Todd Snider song [‘Play a Train Song’], but the others came from the road. I broke my own long-standing rule of not writing while touring, because it’s stressful and you write too many songs about little bitty bottles of shampoo and remote controls. I thought there were enough of those songs in the world, so I just never wrote that way.”

Keen says it wasn’t about shifting gears just for the sake of change. He recognizes that long-time fans might be a bit suspicious when they hear the supposed safeguards he has created have changed.

Celebrated artists like Johnny Cash, Lyle Lovett, George Strait and The Dixie Chicks have all lauded Keen as a songwriter and recorded his songs, and even Keen laughs about his supposed “standing” in the industry.

“I guess I’m not old; I’m legendary,” he says.

The new approach simply came after waking up to the fact that no one else was telling him what to do with his own anxiety. And that’s when he decided to start recording.

“I just thought it was a silly idea,” Keen says. “I wasn’t sure what I was

Consequently, the difference between the last record and this record is that these songs just sort of popped out. I just let ’em pop out. I didn’t over-think anything, so I actually think these songs are more universally appealing.”

Keen is readily playing Confetti’s tunes on the road, and fans heading to Waterloo’s fourth birthday party in Louisville should hear most of them.

“All the tunes, so far, have gone over well,” he says. “I always think the worst thing that fans like to hear is, ‘We’re gonna

She’s singing to nobody and everybody at the same time. As if on cue, a passerby recognizes the tune and adds her voice to the chorus. Earlier, the woman had been standing in front of a microphone in a small studio, her robust voice full of passion as she sang a mournful duet about heartbreak with Ibrahim Ferrer.

These short scenes, filmed in the spring of 1998 as part of the documentary Buena Vista Social Club, are how most Americans first saw the legendary Cuban singer Omara Portuondo.

play our new song now.’ But we haven’t gotten any boos yet. Nobody’s thrown any lettuce or tomatoes up on the stage while we’ve played them, so it’s a success.”

Fans will also find the new tunes a bit more accessible than his previous work.

Whether that’s a testament to his new writing environment, Keen says he isn’t sure, but the songs are shorter and simpler than what long-time listeners will expect. They’re also a bit lighter on the trademark “insider” quality that Keen’s records often have.

“I’m sort of famous for throwing in a lot of inside jokes or oblique references that I don’t give a shit if anybody understands, since I get a kick out of it,” he says. “You have to understand — and I think this goes for most songwriters — I’m just out here trying to amuse myself most of the time. I’m not thinking about anybody else. I’m just wanting to have fun myself. Am I laughing? Am I enjoying myself? Does it sound good in my head?

If so, that’s cool.”

As for the lone cover on the album, Keen says he respects Snider as much as any fellow musician. Keen says the two toured together in recent years and would love to make a project together, but they’re too “irresponsible to make it happen.” What Keen can do, however, is point his audience toward the music he believes in himself.

When Keen headlines the fourth birthday bash for Waterloo, the party will feature various artists throughout the afternoon, with Keen taking the stage at the night’s end. His only hope is for all involved to have a good time, from the artists to the fans. If he has to break a few rules to make it happen, well, that wouldn’t be surprising.

Some other enchanting perspectives include that of Japanese director Yasuzo Masumura, who directed more than 60 movies in his lifetime. Although many film critics rave about his work, he is largely unknown to American audiences.

Luckily for Boulder, IFS will play a different film of his for an entire week (Nov. 16-20). Even better, these film viewings will be free to the public.

“He was a complicated director,” Kjolseth says.

“We’re only getting a sample of his work, but each one is different.”

Topics range from mountaineering all the way to nihilism. It’s important to note that these films are not available on DVD, so it’s a rare and refreshing opportunity for the Boulder community to get a rare artistic glimpse into Masumura’s mind.

Another refreshing element for the Boulder community is the addition of director/writer Alex Cox to the CU film studies department. IFS plans to have an almost mini-retrospective of his work every Wednesday night this fall. Not only that, Cox will be available for a Q&A session after each screening.

films. It’s a thrill to have him out here now as a colleague,” Kjolseth says.

Some of Cox’s memorable films include the cult classic Repo Man (Sept.

14), about a young punk who loses his job as a grocery clerk and finds work (and cold hard cash) through repossessing cars, and Sid and Nancy (Sept. 21), which is about the life and times of Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen.

The IFS offers escape from escapism.

“We are now bombarded with more visual information than any other culture before ours,” Kjolseth says. “Film helps us become visually literate. We must inoculate ourselves from being manipulated from government propaganda and studio capitalist culture by becoming visually competent.”

The International Film Series is a better place than most to do just that.

The season starts with a screening of Happy on Friday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

It is a film about the psychology of what happiness means, both individually and globally.

Following Happy is Farmageddon, a film on Americans’ right to access fresh, healthy and local foods from family farms, on Saturday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

I

n the launch of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge, Colorado will challenge France for the title of toughest race in the world, putting 128 cyclists to a grueling test against fierce climbs that crisscross Colorado mountain passes, long distances and an uphill time trial.

The race, which starts on Aug. 22 in Colorado Springs, will draw top cyclists from around the world, including Boulder resident Tom Danielson. Danielson, who rides for the USA on the Garmin-Cervélo team, finished ninth overall in this year’s Tour de France and was the topranked American in what was his first year competing in the Tour.

“Everything from the team presentation to the final lap in Paris was really magical for me,” Danielson says. “It was really a lot different than any other cycling race I’d ever done. This was basically the extreme of every race I’d ever done.”

Speed, intensity, aggressiveness of the race, stress and the amount of media coverage — the Tour is all of those amplified to their max.

“Truly, it’s probably the hardest event in the world you can do,” he says.

But the USA Pro Cycling Challenge may give it a run for that rank.

days and includes an uphill time trial at a lofty course in Vail. In a single day, riders will complete a 200-kilometer stage that crosses both Cottonwood Pass and Independence Pass, each more than 12,000 feet in elevation.

That stage is expected to be the race’s true test piece, but Danielson says it was the time trial that first got his attention.

“I think my first thought was, you know, ‘uphill time trial,’” he says. “I think that the thing I got most excited about was the uphill time trial in Vail.

That stage has a lot of history being part of the Coors Classic and everything, cycling greats all have times …

Definitely really excited about that one.”

Danielson was part of the winning team for the stage two time trial in the Tour de France. But as with many things in Colorado, elevation and scenery will set this race apart.

“I think more than the high altitude will, it will just be the amazing passes that we’re riding over and the amazing crowds that Colorado will have. I think those things will really set the race apart,” he says. “Yeah, it’s the highest race essentially in the world, and we’re all going to suffer at altitude, but at the end of the day, it’s in Colorado, which is really a cycling mecca.”

That could bring out huge crowds of spectators.

While he lives at more than 5,000 feet and comes home to altitude to recover, Danielson doesn’t expect there to be much of a home court advantage.

Local cyclists may see a slight edge, but not a significant change in their abilities as contenders.

“They’ll probably be more competitive than normal, but I still think that the best cyclists will be the best at this race,” he says.

A lot of cyclists are already camped around Colorado Springs and Aspen,

and are even out riding around Boulder, he says.

“I don’t really see as much of an advantage as people will think,” he says.

“Everyone will have adapted to that altitude, so it will just come down to the people who are more efficient riders … Basically what the altitude will do is just make the selection that much more significant. It will just amplify the difficult obstacles of the race.”

After having ridden the final lap of the Tour de France around the Champs Élysées in Paris, Danielson says this race will bring that feeling home, finishing at the state Capitol in Denver.

“That’s really, really in the back of my mind for sure,” Danielson says. “I thought how special it would be to ride into Denver … Regardless of how this race comes out for me, even if I have a bad race — which I hope I don’t — it will be real special to finish a race here in Colorado close to where I live … It’s definitely going to be really magical for sure.”

The race has drawn five of the top 10 ranked riders from the Tour de France and a Columbian team, the Gobernacio Indeportes Antioquia, that performed well at the Tour of Utah.

Other Colorado competitors include Danielson’s Garmin-Cervélo teammate Peter Stetina and Tejay van Garderen of the HTC-Highroad team. Both Stetina and van Garderen finished in the top 25 in the Tour of Utah.

“This race is here to stay, and it’s going to be really amazing this year,” Danielson says. “This is the first year, and they already have the best field that’s ever been assembled here on U.S. soil.”

A long-awaited cure for cheese cravings

oulder’s craving for a cheese shop will finally be satisfied on Saturday, Aug. 20, with the opening of Cured at 19th and Pearl streets.

While Cured is mainly based around cheese, the shop will offer a variety of other delicacies, including wine, meats, produce, freshly baked breads and other products aimed at bringing joy to the palate.

Cured is co-owned by Will Frischkorn and Coral Ferguson, a soon-to-be-married pair whose passion for their project is evident. Their descriptions of the lavender- and coffee-rubbed cheddar-style cheese they will be serving in their shop and the prosciutto they will be slicing from one of the five legs of meat hanging behind their cheese bar are mouthwatering.

Frischkorn and Ferguson draw their inspiration from the years they spent living in Spain.

“We got used to a certain way of shopping,” says Ferguson. “Daily rounds to the local markets, developing a repertoire with the people in the shops, finding a personal connection to food. We’re trying to bring that culture here.”

“Often you go to a restaurant and have a great meal, but struggle to find the ingredients to make something similar at home,” adds Frischkorn. “We want to provide people the place to find those.”

After months of planning, tasting and driving 10,000 miles across the country to find the best cheese makers and mongers, Frischkorn and Ferguson are anxious to reveal the products they have chosen.

More than 80 percent of the meats and cheeses are American, and many of the cheeses are not currently available in Colorado. Some, like those from a small farm on Vashon Island, Wash., are not available beyond their local farmers’ markets.

The most frequently used words by Frischkorn and Ferguson when describing the offerings at Cured are “fun,” “exciting” and “value-oriented.”

The wine selection is certainly exciting and valueoriented, with 60 selections under $30 and 45 selections under $20, all chosen by Frischkorn and Ferguson with taste and pairing potentials in mind.

Using this base of carefully selected wines, the couple plans to offer wine, cheese and pairing classes several times a month.

“We want to make a huge push towards education,” says Ferguson. “We want the classes to be engaging, to teach people the fun parts of eating.”

Frischkorn and Ferguson have also made an effort to bring Colorado talent into their shop. All beers and spirits offered at Cured are from Colorado distilleries and breweries, like Avery and Upslope.

One of the more engaging ideas coming out of the shop is the completely compostable picnic box.

The boxes will be filled with cheese, meat, greens and a bottle of wine, all selected for their complementary flavors. Crayons will also be included, so that customers can decorate the color-by-number pictures displayed on each box. Customers will be able to pick a pre-made box, fill an empty one with their own choices, or choose an empty box with a Cured gift card for

The creativity behind the idea extends beyond the food at Cured. The branding, design and website creation for Cured were completed by Ferguson, who has a background in graphic design. The hardwood floors in the shop were laid, sanded and polished by Frischkorn. Finally, every single card, tag and branded item was hand-stamped by Frischkorn and Ferguson — a tedious task, but one that adds a touch of care and attention to the space.

The shop will also include a small bar with limited seating where patrons can enjoy fresh meats and cheeses while perusing a collection of books. The books will follow the themes of cheese, wine and meats, but will also feature works that resonate with the couple.

Visitors to Cured will also have a chance to stop

by Boxcar Roasters, a local coffee-roasting company sharing the space. Boxcar patrons can try the coffee roasted on site and buy their favorite beans, leaving with an education on how to brew them for the best taste. The owners of the two establishments are also considering doing coffee and cheese pairings in the future.

The careful selection of cheeses, wines and accoutrements, such as preserves, vinegars, salts and pickles, have given the couple an extensive knowledge of their products, which helps customers identify perfectly paired foods and drink.

“We want to develop a relationship with the neighborhood,” says Frischkorn. “It’s great walking into a shop and buying food from a friendly face, a person you know.”

And, as Ferguson likes to say, “Cheese is glutenfree!”

Twisted Pine grows southward Boulder-based Twisted Pine Brewing Company has expanded its distribution to include New Mexico.

New Mexico marks the seventh state in which the Twisted ales can now be found. The distribution of Twisted Pine products will be handled by L&F Distributors, based out of Roswell, N.M. At least a half-dozen varieties will be distributed in New Mexico by the end of the month.

Calle McCann, sales representative for the brewery and a former New Mexico resident, says she is especially enthusiastic about how one particular Twisted Pine offering will be received.

“Our Billy’s Chilies will definitely find a lot of fans there,” predicts McCann, saying it will be a perfect fit in a state that is world-renowned for its cultivation of green chile, one of the ingredients used to flavor the ale.

In other Twisted news, on Friday, Aug. 26, the brewery will release its Black Swan Saison, a Belgium-style farmhouse ale with rich, black color and roasty maltiness. And this winter, the brewery will launch its Artisan Ale Series, a project intended to raise awareness of local artists through limited-release ales. Each month, beginning in January 2012, Twisted Pine will release a different bomber featuring art by a local artist. The beers and labels will be released the first Saturday of every month, coinciding with an art show in the brewery.

Buying 10 percent local Transition Colorado has issued a challenge to Boulder County residents to participate in a “10 Percent Local Food Shift Pledge.”

The initiative is being sponsored by the Boulder County Farmers’ Markets to connect more eaters with local growers and food producers, in an effort to strengthen the local food economy.

County residents are being asked to pledge to spend 10 percent of their food budgets with local sources. The money shifted to the local economy will be tracked to demonstrate the economic impact of food localization.

A website designed by Vancouver-based technology company Foodtree will allow for crowdsourcing of local food suppliers and works together with a mobile application to display images, text reviews and send descriptions of local farms, farm stands, markets and other local food providers.

People can take the pledge at Boulder County Farmers’ Markets and Transition Colorado booths or online at LocalFoodShift.com. The website will provide an interactive environment where eaters can learn where to buy local foods and how they can change their food-buying habits. The mobile iPhone app allows visitors to take photos of what’s fresh at the Boulder and Longmont farmers’ markets. They can then automatically upload their food finds along with information about sourcing, thus alerting others in real time to seasonal farm-fresh produce as it arrives at the markets. The first of its kind in the U.S., the mobile app is being beta tested in Boulder and Longmont, and can be downloaded free at Apple’s online App Store.

Once people take the pledge, they will receive a brief weekly email with a status report and a survey form asking key questions about their food purchasing progress.

BCFM and Transition Colorado are also designing a series of rewards and incentives for program participants.

Fortunately, Lafayette’s Zamparelli’s Italian Bistro rises to the occasion with first-rate interpretations of red sauce standbys. Simple spaghetti and meatballs are a top choice here, as is the chicken marsala. Start with cheesy garlic bread and end with a cannoli, and you’ll have a near iconic meal.

self-proclaimed Tuscan-style neighborhood restaurant, North Boulder’s Radda Trattoria dishes out substantial fare that retains rustic roots while keeping a sophisticated flair in preparation and ingredient choice. The piccolo fritto appetizer is a triumphant blend of fried zucchini, onion, rock shrimp and citrus, with an appealing preparation style equaling that of the best tempura.

The brick-pressed chicken here is a standout, as is the pancetta-laden carbonara.

Fast and cheap

F

ast, cheap and out of control, and set in glamorous Grand Rapids, Mich., director Ruben Fleischer’s 30 Minutes or Less doesn’t even crack the 80-minute mark if you exclude the end credits. The same was true of Fleischer’s feature film debut, the very funny Zombieland, which contained more visual wit and kinetic energy than most action comedies we’re seeing lately. Fleischer and his editor, Alan Baumgarten, have complementary senses of humor; they know how to cut for maximum punctuation, as well as how to cut to the chase.

Roughly half of this film works a lot better than roughly the other half. Crisscrossing between two sets of combustible bromances, the story pivots on Nick, played by Jesse Eisenberg, who delivers pizzas for a living. His buddy Chet, played by Aziz Ansari, teaches elementary school and has a twin sister (Dilshad Vadsaria) who is the love of Nick’s semblance of a life.

On the other side of town, meanwhile, wastrel sociopath Dwayne (Danny McBride) and his minion Travis (Nick Swardson) plan to kill Dwayne’s mean, rich father (Fred Ward) for inheritance money. They need a hostage to rob a bank (What? Oh, whatever) to come up with $100,000 to pay the hit man (an amusingly sinister Michael Pena). The pizza boy-man presents a ripe stooge, indeed, and for most of 30

When death misses

here was a scene, lo those many (OK, 11) years ago, in the original Final Destination. One of the characters who inadvertently “cheated death” and ruined “death’s grand design” had holed up in a cabin, which then had to be made accident-proof.

Sharp objects of every shape and form were noted by the camera as we, the viewers, were made to cringe and anticipate what gruesome things might happen.

Over the succeeding years, the Destinations have gotten away from that anticipation, lost track of character, shrugged off performance and given up any thoughts of subtext — young people who figure they’re going to live forever suddenly preoccupied with mortality. The films have become elaborate 3-D chain-reaction “accidents” that cause someone — a survivor, a cop — to say, “It can’t be a coincidence.”

And somebody else will declare, “It isn’t.”

Minutes or Less, Nick, against his increasingly panicky will, runs around with explosives strapped to his chest, while the criminals alternately threaten his extinction and hang out at strip clubs or taco shops, dreaming of their future.

When the comedy works, it really works. The scene in which congenitally timid and generally lawabiding Nick and Chet go gangsta and get into the ’80s action-movie spirit of their first foray into bank robbery charges hard and builds cleverly. Fleischer locates an effective mixture of jokes and violence here; elsewhere the mixture is less sure of itself. The most jarring sequences recall the bits in Pineapple Express

that mistook easy brutality for comic realism.

30 Minutes or Less may be too jarring, period, for most people. It’s based loosely on a fatal 2003 Erie, Pa., incident involving a pizza deliveryman, a set of explosives and a group of bank robbers with whom he may or may not have colluded. The film has no interest in following the grim events of what actually happened. Even so: This is one comedy built on one hell of a queasy-making premise.

The other drawback here has two names: “Danny” and “McBride.” I don’t know how much more Danny McBride I can take in this sort of hostile lummox role, and each time the story flies off Nick and Chet and lands back with Dwayne and Travis, it’s like a flat tire going flupp-flupp-flupp.

Screenwriter Michael Diliberti has talent, and some of his funny lines are actually f-word-free, as when Nick argues with Chet about being ready for a serious adulthood and Chet replies with: “You? An adult? You had a Lunchables for dinner!” Eisenberg’s deadpan precision works well with Ansari’s wide-eyed wonder at the life of crime he’s suddenly leading. The movie ends up being just sharp enough at its peaks to be frustrating in its valleys. But the laughs are there.

by Roger Moore ber, characters we don’t. It’s a slack and soulless but competently executed film of a script with butterknife-dull dialogue and actors cast because of their “type.”

Sam (Nicholas D’Agosto) is the young guy whose premonition causes him, his ex-girlfriend (Emma Bell) and six others to flee a bus before the bridge they’re on collapses. He has seen the amazing 3-D-blood-on-thelens ways they’re all going to die — impaled on a sailboat mast or by a stack of re-bar, squished by a falling convertible, drowned in the bus.

But they’re not even done mourning their dead colleagues (they were headed for a corporate retreat) when the survivors start dying off. Death diva Tony Todd (Candyman) shows up as a coroner who explains that they “shorted death” — and death always counts the till at the end of a disaster.

Two words for you — acupuncture accident. Two more — lethal lasik. The deaths are executed (ahem) with care.

It’s the colorless performances and predictable conversations that pretty much kill this one. There’s one big anticipation scene — Sam works in a fancy restaurant, and a kitchen is filled with things that can cut, crush, grind, boil or burn you to death.

The elaborate terminal exits drew more script attention than the characters or anything else.

Without a moral component to the tale, we’re just treated to perfunctory killing effects and stunts and gore, which make fans of the genre dutifully hoot and holler and applaud.

Screenwriter Eric Heisserer and director Steven Quale may be patting themselves on the back for their semi-clever back-engineered ending. It’s the 85-minute journey that precedes that “final” destination that counts. This isn’t the worst of the bunch, not by far.

But my premonition is this won’t be the finale this series has screamed out for these past few years.
