Finley’s poison pill

I read with both amusement and a bit of consternation the article describing Longmont City Council Member Bonnie Finley’s attempt to inject a poison pill onto the November ballot. (“Longmont city council member: Tax people for fracking lawsuit costs,” News, Aug. 9.)

She’s apparently so frightened that the charter amendment, The Longmont Public Health, Safety and Welfare Act, will pass and be upheld by the courts that she’s looking for a method to scare the bejesus out of the Longmont electorate.

What better way to do this than to start talking about taxes, always a “four-letter word” in Longmont.

Longmont is entitled to a fair election on the issue. Blatant voter manipulation is an abuse of the democratic process. And that’s precisely what Bonnie Finley is proposing. Ms. Finley ought to be ashamed of herself.

The Health, Safety and Wellness Act would prohibit the extremely hazardous process of fracking (hydraulic fracturing) as well as waste injection wells within the city limits of Longmont. Fracking lowers property values, damages taxpayer-funded roads, endangers our health and safety, and contaminates the air we breathe and water we drink. Bonnie Finley wants to derail a citizen effort to keep Longmont a great place to live so that the oil and gas industry can frack next to our homes,

schools and Union Reservoir.

The Finley Tax was slipped into discussion during “Mayor and Council Comments” at the July 24 city council meeting. Her position is predicated on her belief that mineral rights owners would be deprived of the property right to access those minerals. Ms. Finley grossly, and probably intentionally, misreads the language of the charter amendment.

The amendment prohibits the extrac-

tion method of hydraulic fracking. It does not ban oil and gas drilling by other methods. Owners or lessees of minerals are free to use other methods of acquisition besides hydraulic fracking. They are not being deprived of all economically beneficial uses of their minerals.

The charter amendment is telling the oil and gas industry and their political supporters like Ms. Finley that they can’t access and sell these minerals using an inherently harmful process. Make no mistake, fracking is harmful to children, families, the community and the environment. The evidence keeps mounting, much to the dismay of the oil and gas industry and those people and agencies that facilitate the industry’s wishes.

Save the dolphins

On June 14, Elizabeth Miller wrote an excellent commentary entitled “Blue Colorado” about the health of our oceans and why landlocked Coloradans should be concerned. She emphasized three critical issues that should trouble us all: problems with fish, plastics and acidification of our oceans. These are extremely relevant issues that must be dealt with in order to secure the survival of our oceans and all marine life. Nevertheless, I would like to propose a fourth issue that sorely

begs the world’s immediate attention to ensure not only the health of our oceans, but ultimately, all life on planet Earth.

Every Sept. 1 begins the world’s largest annual dolphin slaughter in Taiji, Japan. We are only days away from thousands of dolphins unnecessarily, and brutally, losing their lives. Those who are not killed are captured live and sold to aquariums and marine parks, living out their days in captivity performing circus acts to entertain the public. These practices continue because the International Whaling Committee (IWC) does not offer protection for small cetaceans such as dolphins. As a result, they are rapidly declining in numbers.

Over 20,000 dolphins and other whale species are killed each year by Japan. In Taiji alone, more than 1,500 dolphins are slaughtered every year.

Dolphins, an apex predator, are extremely valuable in keeping our oceans healthy, and in balance, by controlling overpopulation of fish.

We Coloradans have an opportunity to stand as one in honoring the lives of thousands of dolphins, and small whales, lost every year to Japanese drive hunts, illegal tuna fishing and naval sonar/munitions training. Please join us for Dolphin Appreciation Day on Friday, Aug. 31, at 11:30 a.m. at the Japanese Consulate, located at 1225 17th St. in Denver.

And when cost is not an issue, women choose IUDs in much greater numbers.

Susan Levy, executive director of Boulder Valley Women’s Health, says she’s interested to see what the impact of PPACA will be on women’s choice of

contraceptive. At the clinic, private grant money that helps with the cost of IUDs has had an impact already on women’s decisions.

“Just in terms of the use of IUDs as birth control, we have seen an increase in the use of IUDs, especially when you remove the cost as a barrier,” Levy says.

“Every year the numbers have gone up in terms of the percentage of women who are choosing that.”

The private grant has enabled practitioners to offer abortion patients IUDs

on abortion day, so that they leave with a long-term method of birth control in place and don’t have to return for a second appointment.

“About one-third are leaving with some long-acting form of contraception,” Levy says.

To make IUDs available as emergency birth control, however, would require facilities, including hospital emergency rooms that treat rape victims, to keep IUDs on hand and have health care providers capable of safely

(Re: “No water for fracking? No problem,” Danish Plan, Aug. 9.) So propane’s no problem for Paul Danish, and he wonders why the rest of us aren’t celebrating?

Perhaps it’s because this so-called “green” alternative isn’t actually an improvement over hydro-fracking.

The liquid propane still needs to be tanker-trucked to the drilling site, combined with toxic and proprietary chemicals and injected deep into the earth.

And yes, propane comes with its own baggage. Re-condensing returned propane for re-use requires industrial condensers, which cause more air pollution.

The presence of propane at a well pad adds even more risk to an already extremely dangerous industrial activity that is aggressively expanding into residential areas without regard for human health or safety.

Basic drilling operation issues, like structural integrity of wells and casings, along with leaks, spills, air and groundwater contamination, remain unaddressed.

The only information available about this process comes from GasFrac Services, the Canadian company that developed and markets it commercially. Why bother with scientific studies when there’s a buck to be made?

Fracking with propane isn’t progress.

It’s just a hype, like the natural gas industry that spawned it.

Fired researcher paints pattern of pressure from oil and gas industry

A

former researcher who says he left the Colorado School of Mines due to pressure from the oil and gas industry has now lost his university job in Wyoming after an industry association complained to his superiors about comments he made about fracking.

It appears to be one of several examples of faculty around the country experiencing blowback from the powerful oil and gas industry after releasing research exposing the possible health hazards associated with hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, and other extraction processes.

What makes Geoffrey Thyne’s case distinctive is that he claims he and his university employers have caught heat from the industry more than once.

Thyne, who began working at Mines as a research faculty member in 1996, made some controversial remarks about fracking in 2005. He was reviewing the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2004 report on hydraulic fracturing at the request of Earthworks’ Oil and Gas Accountability Project, and he says the EPA study’s conclusion was essentially that because there was no data on water impacts from fracking, there was no threat of contamination.

“Absence of proof is not proof of absence,” he says.

Just as Thyne was about to begin a research project to provide some of that data, he criticized the EPA report in interviews, and media outlets around the country printed his quotes. Thyne says the head of the Mines institute where he worked warned him to be careful, because his comments made it seem like he was representing the school. It was a sensitive political climate, Thyne says, as fracking was about to become exempted from the Clean Water Act and as the Ward Churchill witch hunt was in full swing at the University of Colorado.

So when another of Thyne’s controversial quotes about fracking appeared in the media a short time later, he says “the tenor of the conversation changed” and his boss told him he was getting “pushback” from alumni and members of the Boulder Weekly

He based it on a calculation of the amount of water needed to frack an especially long well. Wells stretching horizontally for about a mile need to be fracked in up to 40 different sections, he says, using between 1 million and 2 million gallons of water for each section.

Thyne offered to qualify his statements, but he says the PAW representatives wanted him to “say it’s wrong in writing.”

He says his boss at the institute told him to write a letter to the newspaper’s editor making it clear he was not speaking on behalf of the university, which he did, without retracting his number.

“This will continue to happen as long as you speak out on a subject like this,” Thyne says of the pressure he’s experienced. “Industry handled this about as badly as they possibly could have. This is totally my opinion, but I think they handed this off to PR people at some point, and they’ve chosen a strategy that’s going to fail. It has to fail.”

He describes it as a strategy to deny, cover up, avoid responsibility and discount industry critics.

If a major donor or funding source asked someone at the university to stop doing something, couldn’t that have a trickle-down effect?

“I don’t believe so,” Robitaille replies.

Other cases

at the very least there need to be stiffer monetary penalties for companies that don’t self-report spills and other mishaps. “Add another zero or two.”

Thyne has a three-part solution that would rein in Colorado’s oil and gas industry and address related health and safety concerns: • Put all data online, as is now done in Wyoming.

• Put tracers in fracking fluid and other liquids used so that we can find out where it ends up.

• Create more accountability for companies by levying steep fines and making them clean up the messes they make.

Thyne says changes in the industry may take time, but at least the media has raised awareness about the issue.

“It’s definitely happened because of stories in the press,” he says.

As for his own ousters, perhaps shining light on the industry’s modus operandi for going after its critics will help as well.

“They don’t call you, they don’t call your boss,” Thyne says of their method.

“They go as high up the food chain as they can get. It sounds like dirty pool to me.”

Luckily, Thyne says, he’s gotten a couple of job offers, so he won’t be unemployed for long.

But he says he’s not likely to work for a university again.

“Academia is not a good fit for any kind of involvement in this stuff,” he says.

Thyne says he’s not the only one who’s been subjected to undue pressure from the oil and gas industry. He says he knows of faculty around the nation who have been targeted as well, including an engineer at Cornell University who called for an outright fracking ban in his state.

“Industry did a bunch of nasty pieces on him, trying to make him look like a wild-eyed, pistol-waving lunatic,” Thyne says.

There was even one woman from the tiny town of Raton, N.M., who claimed she was being followed and harassed after complaining about her water well being contaminated by nearby drilling operations.

“This ain’t shit,” Thyne says of his own situation. “I’ve talked to people who’ve been shot at. … It’s a real sticky situation, because there are some people getting jobs in the community, because of the development, and they’re good-paying jobs, and this is changing our economy, so it’s all positive, and then you say, ‘Yeah, well, soand-so screwed up my well, and they won’t compensate me for it, so I’m going to take them to court, or I’m going to make waves.’ And you’ve got your neighbors mad at you.”

In addition, taking a big oil or gas company to court isn’t a walk in the park.

“You’ve got to have really deep pockets, you’ve got to go to court for a couple of years,” Thyne says. “They’re going to push it back and push it back and push it back, and then they’re going to wait until the last second, literally, and they’re going to settle. And they’re probably going to simply buy your land for what you paid for it, and get you to sign a nondisclosure [agreement] and say bye bye.”

Thyne, who has worked in the field for three decades, including on an offshore platform in California, says this industry will eventually be forced to undergo closer regulatory scrutiny, like other industries have done.

“It’s a huge industry, and it’s not regulated, except by the states, and that’s kind of humorous,” he says, adding that Boulder Weekly

Boulder-based company among nominees for grant

For Boulderites, sustainability might mean energy efficiency and lowering the community’s carbon footprint. It might mean cultivating local food. But it also might mean creating and sustaining local businesses and jobs. For the impoverished women of Uganda, sustainability means developing an income source that is ongoing and allows them to give their children an education and an opportunity for a better life. What we assume as a right for all children in the U.S. is available only for those with the means to afford school in many Third World countries.

BeadforLife co-founder and executive director Devin Hibbard retells the story of one Ugandan

woman, Furaha Christine, as an example. Christine joined BeadforLife’s 18-month entrepreneurial program after fleeing her army-occupied village and hiding in the African jungle for two weeks, all while pregnant and caring for her 2-year-old child.

In BeadforLife’s program, Christine learned how to roll beads, saved her earnings and went on to open not one, but five busi-

nesses.

“Christine’s story is a story of amazing success,” Hibbard says. “From the moment she came in, she was determined to change her life and she sure has.”

Stories like Christine’s prompted MORE magazine, a New York City-based publication that advocates for “the woman who lives in a state of constant possibility,” to contact BeadforLife and ask them to be one of 10 women-run organizations participating in a

year-long series and competition called “Hire Calling: MORE’s Job Genius Award.”

The purpose of the competition was to locate women-run organizations that were not just intending to do good, but actually accomplishing something measurable in offering disadvantaged women an opportunity to create a sustainable living. Judy Coyne, MORE’s executive editor, explains that the competition was the inspiration of their editor-in-chief, who wanted to do something to curb the recession’s effect on women.

“Women suffer particularly,” Coyne says. “They suffer both here in the States and around the world.”

The organizations selected to participate were presented in MORE magazine and on its website, and entered into a competition to win a $20,000 grant to further their work. After months of highlighting 10 carefully selected organizations, MORE’s readers were (and still are — voting ends on Aug. 31) encouraged to vote for the organization they feel most worthy of winning the grant.

Members of the MORE staff were already familiar with BeadforLife’s work, and the organization was contacted and gladly accepted.

BeadforLife was showcased in MORE magazine’s December 2011/January 2012 issue, which Hibbard calls an amazing honor. Amid mounting criticism against a proposed copper mine in Bristol Bay, Alaska, a group of independent environmental scientists are crying foul at an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) assessment of the prospective project.

The group of experts, contracted by the EPA to peer review its assessment of the mine, are concerned that the environmental agency based its assessment on a hypothetical mine rather than actual proposed plans, which have not yet been submitted.

In fact, Pebble Partnership, the company that plans to develop the mine, has not yet applied for permits for the project.

The proposed mine is expected to be one of the largest of its kind in the world.

The EPA recently expressed concern over the environmental impact of such a mine on the sockeye salmon fishery (the largest in the world), the indigenous people of the area and the fragile ecosystem on which they rely.

The panel will release its official review of the EPA assessment in the coming weeks.

The EPA is expected to take the peer review into consideration when writing its final draft assessment of the Pebble mine project, which should be released later this

NEW CLIMATE CHANGE PARTICLE CONTRIBUTES TO GLOBAL COOLING …

A group of international scientists from the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Helsinki have discovered a new chemical compound that is affecting global climate change.

The good news? The compound could help to create more clouds, effectively cooling the earth by reflecting sunlight. The bad news, however, is that the newly discovered compound creates sulfuric acid, so the increased cloud cover might be a precursor to acid rain.

Climate scientists previously believed that atmospheric sulfuric acid was usually only created during the day, with the sun acting as a catalyst that causes OH particles — highly reactive oxygen and hydrogen atoms with unpaired electrons — to react with sulfur dioxide.

This new compound, made up of ozone and sulfur dioxide, doesn’t need sunlight to react, meaning that sulfuric acid can be created at night. The team of international scientists decided to research the issue when they noticed sulfuric acid in forests in Finland at night.

This compound could explain why large areas of the southeastern United States have cooled over the last century, according to Roy “Lee” Mauldin III, the lead author of the study.

Sulfuric acid, on top of being a precursor to acid rain, has been shown to have negative impacts on the human respiratory system.

Scientists also caution that because sulfur dioxide largely comes from fossil fuel emissions at power plants, the rising level of emissions may impact the atmospheric sulfuric cycle.

Last year BeadforLife touched more than 12,000 people in 1,400 households in Africa, Hibbard says. If they are awarded MORE’s grant, they will use the money to touch even more.

“Winning this award will allow us to engage with 100 new women and help them take their tiny businesses and grow them into something sustainable,” Hibbard says. “They will then have businesses that will support them and their families into the future.”

Co-founders Hibbard, Torkin Wakefield and Ginny Jordan — all from Boulder — were inspired to found the organization after the three traveled to Uganda to visit Hibbard’s stepfather (Wakefield is Hibbard’s mother and Jordan is a close family friend), who was working as a doctor with AIDS patients. On that trip, the women met Ugandan women who were creating beads from paper. They bought some,

and were constantly given compliments on the beads. They started establishing a market for the beads by purchasing them through a contact in Uganda.

Their beads are now online and in 50 retail outlets.

BeadforLife also works with another Boulder-based organization, International Midwife Assistance, which provides reproductive health care and education to Ugandan woman. In most Ugandan communities, only one out of 24 women has access to birth control. With funding from BeadforLife, access to birth control in the regions they work in has increased 4,000 percent, according to Jennifer

Braun, International Midwife Assistance’s executive director.

They also work with local schools, like Alexander Dawson School, to involve students in community service projects that aim to help them understand the reality of poverty.

“Kids that do volunteer work with BeadforLife usually get so exited about it,” says Doyen Mitchell, who worked as the Dawson School’s community service coordinator for 15 years, “They’re excited about what BeadforLife does for for these Ugandan women, and their part in helping Ugandan bead makers become self-sufficient.”

he USA Pro Cycling Challenge will spend a week pitting cyclist against cyclist for top rank in a race that claims to be one of the world’s toughest. And while knowing the roads is nice, Van Garderen says he’ll also enjoy having friends and family there to cheer.

“You definitely want to do your best because they don’t always have the opportunity to see me race, and this will be the perfect opportunity to see me race,” he says. “You’re going to want to do your best in this one chance that they have to see you.”

He’s shooting for the absent element from his season: a first place.

“That’s definitely the goal. That’s kind of the only thing missing from my season so far would be a win, and if I could get that in my home state, then that would be incredible,” he says.

His showings in the Tour de France earned him a white jersey — the mark of the best young rider. Van Garderen finished 104th overall in the Olympics.

“This has definitely been a race that’s been on my mind all year. The big challenge is to come fit and fresh after such big goals as the Tour and the Olympics, but I’m feeling good and I’m super-motivated,” he says. “And I definitely want to give my hometown of Boulder, Colo., a good show.”

At age 24 in a field where the defending champion of the Pro Cycling Challenge, Levi Leipheimer, is 38, Van Garderen is likely to have time to stack up plenty of them.

An all-Boulder podium is possible, if not probable, cyclists say.

“It’s definitely possible — I’d say that’s a long shot, but it’s pretty crazy that it’s even a possibility,” Baldwin says. “Some of the best guys in the world are definitely in Boulder now. …

Some of the younger guys who have come up through the ranks here now are coming into their own, and they’re hitting their top form and they’re some of the best riders in the world now. It’s a really exciting time for Colorado.”

omen will come first when cyclists start racing into Aspen on Aug. 22. That’s right, the all-men’s cycling USA Pro Cycling Challenge will be preceded by the Blue Ribbon Alpine Challenge, a criterium race in downtown Aspen that finishes an hour before riders in Stage 3 of the Pro Cycling Challenge from Gunnison are expected to arrive in Aspen.

“This Pro Cycling Challenge — it’s really, really cool to have such a high level of racing here in Colorado because we have amazing roads, but it’s a men’sonly race,” says Alison Powers, winner of this year’s Boulder Roubaix and the North Boulder Park Classic criterium and a U.S. time trial champion, as well as a Pinecliffe resident. “I get asked so many times, ‘Are you racing in it?’ and it’s like, no, it’s men only.”

Last year, while the Pro Cycling

Challenge was ramping up for its inaugural run through Colorado, a trio of people in Aspen had a similar thought — where, in all the buzz about a men’s road cycling race, were the women cyclists?

“I was born and raised in Aspen, and when they made the announcement about the Pro Cycling Challenge everyone was like, ‘Oh isn’t this so cool?

Aren’t you excited?’ and I really wasn’t that excited because there wasn’t a women’s event,” says Jessica Van Garderen (formerly Phillips), the 2002 and 2009 Women’s National Champion cyclist. Over a glass of wine with two other Aspen residents, Jan Koorn and Justin Todd, she says, she suggested that they put on a women’s race.

Phinney, but also University of Colorado alum, Boulder resident and Bissell Pro Cycling rider Carter Jones, who’s also finished a few races winning the “Best Young Rider,” including the 2012 Cascade Cycling Classic, where he finished second overall — up from ninth in 2011.

In a phone interview with Boulder Weekly just before the start of the Utah race, Jones said he was taking the races one at a time and not reading too far ahead at the stages that waited after the Tour of Utah — namely, those in the Pro Cycling Challenge.

“To be honest, I haven’t really looked at the stages yet, still being two weeks out,” he says. “Don’t want to psych myself out too much, knowing how hard the stages are going to be. I’m definitely looking forward to the Boulder stage and the Flagstaff finish.”

He knows the roads well, he says, though not the exact route for stage six — a winding circuit of a thing surely devised as a torture fest — and either way, it’s still going to be challenging.

“The stage is so hard, it’s kind of, either you have it or you don’t,” he says.

Fellow Bissell Pro Cycling rider Frank Pipp, 2012 winner of the Boulder Roubaix, shared similar views on stage six.

“Of course anyone that lives here in Boulder will be excited to do well, but it comes down to the legs, and on day six, some people have the legs and some people won’t,” he says. “You also have to be a climber. That day we’re going to finish up at Flagstaff and it doesn’t matter how excited I am for it, I’m more of a sprinter, I’m not going to get to the line first. I have all the motivation in the world with my wife and my baby watching, but you have to have the skill set.”

The stage he really has his eye on is stage five which drops from Breckenridge into Colorado Springs — after a 10-mile climb over Hoosier Pass — and is billed as a good opportunity for sprinters like

Pipp. But coming through Boulder, where he and his wife have their home, will also be special, he says.

In May, the 2012 USA Cycling Pro Road Race had a trio of Boulder County residents on the podium: Duggan with gold, Pipp with silver and Kiel Riejnen of Team Type 1 with bronze. Van Garderen snagged silver in the time trial component of that race.

Though it’s not his home turf, Pro Cycling Challenge’s defending champion Levi Leipheimer says he found the welcome mat ready last year and hopes to come back to defend this year with his teammates.

“Colorado is a beautiful place with literally breathtaking courses that will take us over 12,000-foot passes,” he said in a statement released by the Omega Pharma Quickstep team’s press officer. “Last year the support from the fans was incredible and rivaled the Grand Tours in Europe. I can’t wait to experience it again.”

“I’m just thrilled that the event is continuing and hopefully picking up momentum,” Baldwin says. “The support last year, it just blew the doors off any event in the U.S. period, in my opinion, but certainly any event for the first year just completely exceeded any expectations, I think, as far as the fanfare and people coming out to support it. I’m almost worried that to grow on that is almost difficult because it was such a ground-breaking event the first year, so I really just hope it can continue to pick up momentum and that people continue to support it and enjoy watching it.”

Baldwin continues, “Even living in Boulder here, being a professional cyclist, I was still completely blown away by the level of excitement for the race,” Baldwin says. “And that’s just an honor and I’m grateful that I live in that state, that people support it like that.”

ocky Mountain Rescue Group (RMRG), the Boulder County Sheriff ’s Office, the Boulder Police Department and the fire departments from several local communities are coordinating rescue plans for the Boulder County portion of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge, which will see 126 cyclists speeding along and through Boulder’s highways and canyons on Saturday, Aug. 25.

“We’re used to dealing with a large influx of people, this is just going to be a little larger,” says Cmdr. Carey Weinheimer of the Boulder Police Department.

Race organizers have estimated the stage will draw 100,000 spectators. Most are likely to be concentrated in the area near the Pearl Street Finish Festival, which is taking place at the same time as the race and will be providing Jumbotrons showing the race as well as a real-life glimpse of riders as they sprint through town. The area of the actual race finish on Flagstaff Mountain is another place expecting large crowds. The total number of spectators is estimated to be around 30 percent larger than the average attendance at a Bolder Boulder or a large University of Colorado football game.

The police department’s preparations will be focused on staging crews around the course in order to provide emergency response quickly and without interrupting the race. They will also be ready to deal with typical summer crowd concerns like heat exhaustion and minor cuts and scrapes.

After a summer of pedaling Europe’s narrow mountain roads, Colorado’s generous roadways shouldn’t pose too much concern for cyclists.

But situations like 30,000 spectators on Flagstaff Road could generate some “smallscale Mountain Rescue” calls,” so RMRG has drafted a plan to station about 74 people from area rescue groups in eight teams around the course, from Lyons to Allenspark to Flagstaff. In addition, they will create a three-person mobile team that will follow the procession. They will also staff their own command center as well as put people at the sheriff ’s office command center, says Dixon Hutchison, one of RMRG’s coordinators for the rescue operation and a 35-year member of the rescue group.

“If a rider were to fall down and go over the edge — which has not happened in any American race but did in the Giro Italia — the race people have said they have to go on. It’s ours,” Hutchison says.

That’s not expected to be an issue, though, he says.

“If somebody who had too much to drink, went 200 feet up the hillside, fell over, smacked their head, it still ought to be treated as a mountain rescue situation,” Hutchison says. “It ought to be using our gear for a safe evac, but in terms of what we have to do it’s probably going to be pretty simple and hopefully fairly quick.”

“All of these teams, if something happens, they’ll move,” Hutchison says. “Because it may be that one team in their place isn’t big enough to handle whatever the problem is — maybe they can handle it, maybe they can’t.

So if they can’t, were going to have to adjust and we’re going to have to

adjust against the traffic if the roads are all closed or there’s actually bicyclists on the roads or just maybe the road’s just been opened and it’s now a traffic jam.”

They’ve been given permission to pass the peloton if absolutely necessary, but Hutchison says that’s something they’ll avoid.

Each of the stationed teams is prepped

to be ready for an evacuation — but has also been told to pack a cooler and some lawn chairs.

Meanwhile, RMRG is also planning to respond to normal rescue calls over the weekend, which could range in number.

“It’s just not very predictable,” Hutchison says.

In meetings, RMRG members are talking through potential rescue scenarios.

“If we cover 10 percent of possible scenarios, we’ll be lucky,” he says.

“There’s just so many things that could happen.”

or me, folk music is a drug, a truth serum of sorts. It has the ability to make me see my life for not only what it is but also what it could and should be. I suspect I’m not alone. The side effects of such inward clarity can’t be taken lightly. Too much of the right music at the right time has been known to bring about a quick and dramatic end to lessthan-fulfilling jobs, relationships or living situations. On rare occasions the perfect song can cause listeners to downsize a life into what fits inside a car and then push them onto the road without regard for final destination or what happens when the tank and the wallet run dry. It is as Arlo Guthrie claimed a couple decades back when he told me, “Folk music is dangerous.”

I’ve felt the pull of such music as long as I can remember. It has been the soundtrack to my life, playing over every pivotal moment, every launch of a new chapter. And while I enjoy many genres of music, it is always folk that is there when the moments matter most, good or bad. Like a cigarette, it offers a mysterious companionship that those who haven’t smoked can’t understand.

So what is it about great folk music that allows it to cast such a powerful spell? Is it the artists or the audience who share a common invisible strand of DNA that allows this music to penetrate so completely?

Fortunately, this is a good time to explore such questions. Where better to look for that thing, that secret ingredient that gives folk music its power, than at The Song School that springs up this time of year under the tents at the Planet Bluegrass grounds in Lyons. It’s a place where songs are deconstructed and analyzed on a nearly cellular level. It is the musical equivalent of a supercollider, a place where folk music’s God particle would surely show itself if it does indeed exist.

My search took me from tent to tent at the school, where I listened to the various instructors — a group of 30 or so of the most gifted singer/songwriters and teachers from across the country — as they each tried in his or her own way to quantify the elements that comprise great folk music.

can’t answer the basic questions of who is talking, whom are they talking to and why? Author and respected songwriting teacher and coach Pat Pattison encouraged the use of metaphor to add power to a song. Further down the meadow, Folks Fest favorite Ellis was sharing her insights. She explained that being successful in the folk music world means first and foremost staying true to who you are and having a clear picture of what your music gives to others. And back at the Wildflower Pavilion, Maggie Simpson was encouraging a room full of attendees to get in touch with their own wide range of emotions in order to better enhance their expressive authenticity. All great points.

At another tent, Michael Bowers, who in addition to being a singer/songwriter is also a practicing therapist, made an interesting, big-picture observation. In trying to contrast great songwriting with something less, he used the metaphor of nomads and pilgrims, noting that while both may travel, the nomads travel simply to get to another place, whereas for pilgrims, the traveling is the destination. It makes sense.

the rich sauce known for its time-consuming process wherein a lot of bones and wine go into a big pot, where they are eventually boiled for hours, finally being reduced down to the final, delicious end product. It’s a lot of work for a small portion, but in the end it’s worth it. She says, “We [songwriters] come from a place of giving a gift. We write, then offer our work as a gift. It’s all we can do.”

These are a few of the observations of the teachers, those proven folk commodities whose music has been finding its way into our lives for years. But that’s only half the story.

What is it that can be gleaned from those 180-plus song-school attendees whose ages range from 11 to almost 80? What is it about the music that has pulled them to this place, year after year for many of them?

Certain themes emerged again and again as I asked my same question, “What is it that makes folk music such a powerful force for so many people?”

“Community, acceptance, supportive, loving, sincere” were the words most often offered, and that was true of nearly every attendee.

Even 11-year-old local prodigy Bella Betts, who was the youngest attendee this year, described her sense of the song school and folk music in these same terms, noting that, “I’ve always been accepted and encouraged by this community.”

Attendee Patty Jackson, who plays in the band Somethin’ About Lulu, has been coming to the song school for 10 years. When asked why, she says simply, “I found my people.” The statement draws agreement from all those sitting around the dinner table, including Jackson’s bandmates Angie Holley, who is in her fifth year at the school, and Bylo Farmer, who is in her sixth.

The concepts of support and encouragement are seemingly always on display at the school. Over dinner, Anne Byrne, a seven-year attendee, tells how she had the chance to sing one of her songs for iconic folk singer Holly Near earlier in the day. It is as if every one of the eight people at the table had shared in the experience. And such a sense of support and empathy extends to the more difficult issues of life as well.

Julie Caron is attending for the sixth time. She came out of need. She lost her father at age 13, and at that time she fooled around a bit with writing a song but never finished it. Then at 33, her mom died. She doesn’t know why, but having lost her last parent caused her to once again desire to write a song, or maybe more accurately, to need to write a song. without knowing a soul, she headed out to song school. Her first day she sat down in a directed-writing class and finally wrote the song that let her begin to deal with her grief. It had taken 20 years to get the words out. It was also that day that she met Bylo and Patty, and she has been creating music ever since. She came for a song and found a community. She says, “Writing songs has healed a lot of things for me.” She’s not the only one.

Terry Bloss is also at the table. It’s his first year at song school, and he, too, came for support and community. Terry lost his wife of 44 years a few months back after a long struggle with her health. His story speaks volumes to the power of this music for everyman.

He says, “After I lost my wife, this became my therapy. I hadn’t picked up my guitar in years. I don’t know how long it had been. I needed something to help me express myself. I’m not a really expressive person, but the music helped me get things out. I hadn’t been out around people in recent years. I’d just been taking care of my wife. She was on a respirator for the last three years.

We finally scheduled the day to take

her off. It was hard, but she died the day before. I just thought it would be a good idea to come out here.”

Terry wrote a song titled “Looking for a Girl in Wichita Falls.” It’s where he met his wife. I didn’t get to hear it, but I’m guessing it would have been a powerful experience.

Community, acceptance, supportive, loving, sincere — add therapeutic to the list.

So did I find the source of folk music’s power to grip and even transform our lives? I did, but I’m no more capable of defining it now than I was before. It’s part craft and partly defined by how we perceive our own journey, pilgrim or nomad. It has power because it connects with us beneath our façades in that place where our heads can’t go, that place where we are mostly all the same. I can’t say how, but it has the ability to heal us, to end wars, to make us realign our lives when we have lost our way. Perhaps Mary Gauthier said it most succinctly when I asked her to describe the power of folk music.

“The truth is the truth,” she said.

I

f Stephen Stills isn’t doing cartwheels across the stage and jumping off of amplifiers this summer on his tour with Crosby, Stills & Nash, he’ll have a good excuse.

“I’ve got to hobble through this tour and then I’ve got to go and get a knee replacement,” the guitarist/ singer says. “It blew up on me three times in the last three months. So that’s a sign.”

Other than the bothersome knee, Stills is a happy guy these days. He is happily married, he’s lost considerable weight and looks fit and trim, and yes, he’s happy to be back out on tour with his longtime musical comrades, Graham Nash and David Crosby.

The trio has assembled a new band for this tour. It includes Michael Burkes (guitar), Todd Caldwell (organ), Shane Fontayne (guitar), Steve DiStanislao (drums), Kevin McCormick (bass) and James Raymond (keyboards). Stills loves what he’s hearing on stage.

“It’s a great band, it gives us all this latitude to do anything from any period of our careers,” Stills says. “So we are having a great time resurrecting songs, and [the band members are] very sensitive to dynamics and getting out of the

Sharon Van Etten finds road to happiness passes through ‘Tramp’

ompleting an album can be like a life passage, closing one chapter and opening another. The third chapter in Sharon Van Etten’s recorded history, Tramp’s a haunting record that pushes out beyond the minimalist, emotionally raw folk of Van Etten’s first two albums. Led by the striking P.J. Harvey-ish lead single, “Serpent,” it pushes her beyond the hothouse of blog buzz to the edges of broader appeal.

“I wanted to rock out. I was being pegged as folk, and I didn’t want to only write sad songs,” she says.

Of course, part of the reason could also be that she’s turned the page on the person who wrote those first two albums. She describes herself as “broken” on her sparse,

Superstar producer Rick Rubin was working on the project with the trio, but the group recently fired Rubin and did a session at Jackson Browne’s studio in an effort to keep the project moving forward.

Stills didn’t offer many specifics on what went wrong with Rubin, but he indicated that Crosby and Rubin

weren’t a good match.

“We were getting there, and I, quite frankly, thought we were on the way,” Stills said. “Choosing the songs was just an exercise of ‘You’ve got to be kidding’ in some places. But Rick was a pretty good sport about that. He doesn’t say much, and that drove Crosby out of his mind. And I’m going to have to defer to the others. I personally thought we were doing well. I have no ill feelings toward Rick Rubin whatsoever.”

Larson deserves much praise for

her work here. There are only a handful of performances left of The Belle of Amherst (and this is true only because the opening was pushed back due to an unexpected and unwelcome waterrelated catastrophe affecting the building that houses Miners Alley’s theatre). Whether you know anything about Dickinson or have any interest in poetry, this is a play that you really should see. As a piece of theatre, it is nearly flawless. As an extended afternoon tea with a captivating figure from American history, it is divine.

‘The Bourne Legacy’ meekly attempts Bond-style serialization

T

he Bourne trilogy includes three of the best action thrillers in cinema, with Jason Bourne portrayed by Matt Damon as an everyman who finds he’s been programmed by the CIA to be a deadly assassin. The third film ends with Bourne lured out of hiding by reporter Simon Ross (Paddy Considine) promising to write an exposé on Project Treadstone, the CIA program that created Bourne in the first place, then being killed.

But what if Treadstone wasn’t the only project that the CIA was using to create super assassins?

That’s where The Bourne Legacy picks up, introducing Aaron Cross ( Jeremy Renner) as an agent created by Project Outcome. Unlike Treadstone, however, Outcome is designed to create killers who can work alone in high-risk environments.

The film opens with Cross in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness, having to fend off a wolf attack and survive

an extraordinarily hostile environment until he meets up with another agent (Oscar Isaac).

Cross learns he’s not the only Outcome creation and is then forced to make his way back to civilization after a drone attacks their isolated cabin.

Outcome is masterminded by Col. Eric Byer (Edward Norton), the director of the National Research Assay Group (NRAG) that also ran Treadstone. But something’s gone wrong, and on the fear that it might all come to light in an investigation, Byer insists they cancel the project and destroy their research.

One of the people affected is NRAG scientist Dr. Marta Shearing (Rachel Weisz), who survives a harrowing attack by one of her fellow researchers, just to go home and encounter security personnel. In the nick of time, Cross shows up and rescues her, and the chase is on, with Shearing shanghaied into managing his drug needs while the

NRAG team tracks them halfway across the globe.

I’m a big fan of the original Bourne series and of Matt Damon’s portrayal of Jason Bourne. To continue the series without Damon was a bold step, and to promote trilogy screenwriter Tony Gilroy to direct was even more risky.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t entirely pay off.

The biggest problem is that the story revolves around the government creating super addicts through geneticaltering drugs: Much of the film is Cross frantically running to find his next fix. That Dr. Shearing so quickly decides to help him is hard to accept for just this reason. Disappointing as a primary motivator, rather than honor or

even revenge.

Still, it’s well assembled and well acted, and the story offers up enough narrative tie-ins to make it a good idea to watch the previous films before going into the theater. Cross is also a good successor to Bourne; it’s the film’s storyline that’s confusing.

The Bourne Legacy is exciting and does a nice job of explaining how the series continues without Bourne being involved. But it ends with too many elements unexplained and a crass, everything but a “next episode” end title appearing on screen, which could have been toned down quite a bit, rather than surprising the audience with the closing titles.

‘The Campaign’ is a 90-minute middle finger to SCOTUS by Ryan Syrek

I

t seems like an odd way to start a review for a movie in which Will Ferrell tries to make Zach Galifianakis touch his testicles on stage during a debate, but The Campaign has a clever message.

Writers Chris Henchy and Shawn Harwell move beyond the standard skewing of attack-ad politics and candidates that are either incompetent or lecherous.

Oh, sure, they have fun with the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion, but the villains are the ones shouting “pay no attention to the douchebags behind the curtain.”

Those douchebags, of course, being Dan Aykroyd and John Lithgow.

This is an R-rated raunchy response to the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling, the one that reaffirmed that companies are people and, because companies speak in the language of money, curbing their donations is an infringement on free speech. All you need to know about the reaction is that it is literally the one bipartisan conclusion the country has reached in forever: Everybody hates it. So even if it seems like Director Jay Roach’s consistently amusing election-year romp is a generic “stay true to yourself ” political morality play, it isn’t. Stay through the credits if you don’t agree.

Cam Brady (Ferrell) are pure George W. “Eight years was awesome, and I was famous and I was powerful” Bush, his flaw is purely Clintonian: He like-a the ladies.

He and his campaign manager, played by the deadly-in-a-supporting-role Jason Sudeikis, expect to run unopposed in the general election. But when the Motch brothers (Lithgow and Aykroyd) see a chance to manipulate the election in order to put a politician in their pocket who will vote to open a sweatshop in North Carolina, they sink their fortune into Marty Huggins (Galifianakis).

Huggins has a proud GOP family name, but is himself a friggin’ weirdo. So the Motches send master image craftsman Tim Wattley (Dylan McDermott) to fix up their would-be puppet. It’s not easy, considering that Huggins is prone to wearing a fanny pack and introduces himself to the political scene with a lengthy story about his pugs eating snacks under the couch. With Brady committing stupider and stupider transgressions, including punching a baby in the face, the race tightens and the laughs come loose.

Galifianakis is at his best here, doing the kind of comically nuanced version of method acting. He got laughs in

one scene simply for how he sat down.

That’s impressive. He has been neutered in other roles, but this is a reminder that when he can unleash his inner Andy Kaufman and go full Tony Clifton, things couldn’t be better. The same can be said for Ferrell, who is so often forced to be a eunuch of a leading man that it’s easy to forget he’s funniest when he lets it all hang out and gets mean.

None of it is sophisticated or original, but that doesn’t mean it’s not clever. There’s a reason the Motch Brothers rhyme with the Koch Brothers, the real-life billionaires influencing real-life politics with real-life money. And by the end of The Campaign, it becomes obvious that this isn’t politician versus politician but an “eff you” to Scalia and his gang. And working that message into a movie with jokes about defecation while getting tickled is always going to get a recommendation.

Crawl down to Pearl for a pick-me-up on Sept. 8

afer than a pub crawl and more energetic than a wine tasting, next month Boulder will play host to an event sure to generate plenty of buzz among those in attendance.

Just don’t plan on taking a nap afterwards.

The Caffeine Crawl grew out of a desire to give individuals an opportunity to learn, share and experience the passion of area coffee and tea houses. While enjoying a special taste of what these artisans are brewing up, patrons can interact on a personal level with those who experiment to give us more than our morning cup of joe.

Last summer the Caffeine Crawl made it to Denver as part of its nationwide tour. This year organizers are showcasing the Pearl Street scene and the vibrant caffeine culture percolating through the area. Stops on the tour include The Laughing Goat; Boxcar Coffee Roasters; Ozo Coffee; The Cup Espresso Café; and Piece, Love and Chocolate.

The tour will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 8 with groups of 20-25 people heading out to different establishments — to avoid diluting the experience by overcrowding.

Guides will host each group, leading them through the tour and providing intimate knowledge of the establishments and caffeinated beverages along the way. Apropos of Boulder, the Pearl Street crawl will be the first true crawl on foot, after more sprawling forays into larger cities like St. Louis, Kansas City and Vancouver. The intimate layout will allow attendees to walk or bike the entire circuit, providing an excuse to burn off that excess energy.

At The Cup, the fair trade organic outfit with locally roasted coffee from Conscious Coffees and hand-crafted pastries and sandwiches, turning their amped-up customers on to new tastes goes hand in hand with their community-based philosophy. General Manager Adam Westlake supports the idea of a coffee house tour in the area.

“It’s always great when you can expand coffee knowledge into the world,” Westlake says. The Cup will be offering perhaps the most unique take on coffee when it serves crawlers their Japanese-inspired concoction.

ne does not live by New American locavore farmto-table fare alone.

Sometimes all one needs is a simple diner experience more suited to an unpretentious ’70s movie protagonist like Jack Nicholson’s character in Five Easy Pieces or Dirty Harry than some lightweight celebrity chef. Dot’s Diner on the Hill is just the ticket when simplicity beckons. This spot features a welcoming but narrow counter space steeped in a Boulderesque ambience exuding a funky, vaguely counterculture vibe.

The energetic cooks and servers here are a friendly yet efficient lot, and the menu holds few surprises for a breakfast and lunch joint. Offerings include a full complement of egg dishes ranging from single egg, bacon and toast kids specials for $4 to $8 jumbosized helpings of huevos rancheros.

The usual suspects of grilled cheese and BLTs with avocado share space on the lunch bill of fare alongside meatless specialties like Gardenburgers and a tempeh Reuben. A few Mexican items, namely quesadillas, enchiladas and burritos, are featured alongside tofu or tempeh-anchored stir-fries.

ans of the Don Siegel-directed film Dirty Harry may recall the diner scene. The titular protagonist is asked by a cook played by Woodrow Parfey if he would prefer his usual lunch or dinner. It’s a moot question, since either meal simply consists of a hot dog. Siegel’s next film was Charley Varrick, which had much the same cast, except for Clint Eastwood. In this film, Parfey plays a hapless mob banker who is warned that his associates will “go to work on you with a pair of pliers and a blowtorch,” a line later appropriated by Quentin Tarantino.

A classic diner standby still delivers

by Clay Fong main dishes. First up was Cara’s $6.50 small Huevos Rancheros, offered with a choice of tortillas — my friend went for whole wheat instead of white. This small portion should be more than adequate for most people.

Dot’s version was somewhat unique in that the whole mix of tortilla, egg, cheddar and chile was run together under a broiler, making for a compellingly gooey concoction. While purists may balk at this melted-together prepa-

ration method, the dish stood up well on its own merits, with each ingredient offering distinct flavor. Cara ordered the chile “Christmas” style, a combination of red and green. Each variety was potent and unique, the red carrying an earthy and smoky savor with moderate heat, while the green was hot with fullbodied fruity tones.

When I ordered my unquestionably retro Monte Cristo sandwich, a touch pricey at $9, our server indicated that it

would come on thick Texas toast. No fancy pants brioche or artisan ham here, and that suited me just fine. Texas met Paris as the bread stuck to the original’s time-tested blueprint, arriving at the table as a not-too-eggy French toast.

The fillings were piping hot, and slightly melted cream cheese standing in for traditional Gruyere or Emmentaler came sweetened by a generous dollop of raspberry jam. Creamy and sweet qualities of these adornments nicely played off the salty smokiness of the ham. Contrary to more traditional preparations, a small pitcher of syrup stood in for the dusting of powdered sugar. I was ambivalent about this change — on one hand I wasn’t getting sugar all over my clothes, on the other, drizzles of syrup made for uneven distribution of sweet.

Dot’s On the Hill won’t break any new ground or alter anyone’s expectations about what’s for breakfast or lunch. It is reliable in its successful interpretations of menu standbys, and the presence of regulars enjoying a meal and perusing the paper attests to this winning trait. Dot’s other main strength is doing the basics up right in a friendly setting free of pretense, and worthy of anyone seeking an honest yet satisfying meal.

Salto Coffee Works is a specialty coffee bar that serves food and drinks, and not just the popular caffeinated beverage. Daily specials incorporate local harvests, such as homemade strawberry jam or Palisade peaches sautéed in butter and brown sugar. On Tuesdays, “The Crust. Rustic Wood Fired Pizza” wagon complements the evening with its pies.

RIDE THE ROAD OF CHAMPIONS, EAT LIKE ONE TOO

A USA Pro Cycling Challenge viewing party and benefit for the Davis Phinney Foundation will be held at the Flagstaff House during the Boulder stage of the bike race on Aug. 25.

A reception and lunch kicks off at 11 a.m., with the race shown on televisions inside the restaurant until the peloton passes by the restaurant as it reaches the Flagstaff Mountain finish later that afternoon. Lunch selections include honeydew melon soup, Alaskan king salmon, high country peaches and goat cheese ice cream.

Since Flagstaff Road will be closed during the day on Aug. 25, visitors must walk or cycle to Flagstaff House for lunch. Specialists from Pro Peloton will be on hand to offer complimentary bike checks and tune-ups during lunch.

More than half of the $185 entry fee will be donated to the Phinney Foundation, which provides information and tools to people living with Parkinson’s. Tour de France stage winner and Olympic bronze medalist Davis Phinney’s son, Taylor Phinney, is competing in the Pro Cycling Challenge. At about one drop every two seconds, The Cup will be working overtime to make more than their usual five cups per day of the syrupy racing fuel. As Westlake says, the slow-drip method makes for “a really clean, smooth, heavy-inthe-mouth, viscous coffee. It’s probably one of the more caffeinated things that we produce.”

Justin Hartman, owner and manager of Ozo Coffee, plans to use several different methods to brew a special espresso from a single origin farm somewhere in the world.

Crawlers can then discern for themselves the subtle nuance each extraction method imparts on flavor.

“We’re excited to be a part of this event. We’re trying to take coffee to the next level,” Hartman says. By stopping in during the Crawl, participants can “learn how much of a craft roaster we really are, and how we take that science and art and combine the two in a café setting,” Hartman says.

One stop along the tour doesn’t necessarily serve coffee, unless you consider espresso truffles to be in the same category. Piece, Love and Chocolate might seem like a strange pairing for a caffeine crawl, but store owner and professional chocolatier Sarah Amorese seems to think the Caffeine Crawl is a good pairing for her creations.

“We’re a chocolate shop, and since we’re the only one on this particular Caffeine Crawl we feel that we have something original to offer,” Amorese says.

That something original has been around our hemisphere since before Europeans first arrived centuries ago.

“We’re handing out our hot sipping chocolate, which has a dash of chili pepper in it. We think it’s most appropriate for the event,” Amorese says, adding a dollop of history. “Chocolate was consumed by the Mayans and the Olmec people hundreds of years ago as a liquid, and that’s what our hot sipping chocolate is reminiscent of.”

The Caffeine Crawl is the brainchild of Kansas City-based The Lab. Aware of the parallels between the up-and-coming coffee craft industry and Colorado’s other booming beverage frontier, Crawl organizer Jason Burton cites the kinship that forms over a cup of coffee. In its second year of promoting these types of events all over the country, The Lab seeks to generate the same synergies between local businesses and the community that the craft brewing industry provides.

“Just like beer events, there’s a cool camaraderie that develops at these crawls, and it all stems from a love of coffee,” Burton says.

For those on the tour, a little marketing can go a long way — especially if within a passionate group.

“Obviously people are very devoted to their caffeine cause and their beverage love, so we’re hoping that it will bring some new people to our establishment who may not have otherwise come into our shop,” Amorese says.

Those who plan on taking the crawl Sept. 8 need to buy a $25 ticket, which covers entry into each establishment as well as samples of each location’s specialty that day.
