Highroad Why the Bernie revolution will continue

he reason that I believe Bernie Sanders’ political rebellion will persevere is that it’s organic.

Rather than being an artificial marketing creation sprouted in some D.C. hothouse by national groups and moneyed interests, this is a wildflower movement that sprang up spontaneously, took root and spread its seeds across thousands of zip codes.

Contrary to the conventional wis-

dom of most political pundits, his supporters are not giving up on politics.

Why would they? After all, this talented corps of pro-democracy activists seemingly came from nowhere, won 22 states, virtually tied in five others and revolutionized the Democrats’ message, policy agenda and method of campaigning, so they’re eager to push forward.

I’ve been out there among them for months — from Great Falls to Cedar Falls, Carson City to New York City, and most recently at the Democratic Convention in Philadelphia. No way they’ll “Bern out” and fold, for they are battling the gross inequality and corporate rapaciousness that has a stranglehold on our democracy and on their own well-being. They don’t see their involvement as part of the usual political game, but as the REAL politics of America: The ongoing, historic struggle by everyday people to democratize our country’s wealth and power to ben-

efit all and serve the common good.

Bernie’s success emerged like a grito — a long suppressed shout of rebellion — from the battered soul of working-class America. It sprang in part from people’s anger at being run over, then ignored by the corporate and political elites. But as Bernie’s message spread through mass rallies and social media, it became obvious that the rebellion is also motivated by hope — a deep belief in and a yearning for Egalitarian America, a society dedicated to Democracy’s fundamental principle: We’re all in this together.

T

he Trump-Putin controversies have stirred memories of the Cold War. But the world has changed.

The Soviet Union was a peculiar animal. The regime emerged from a popular revolution in 1917 against a gigantic autocratic, semi-feudal Czarist empire. It claimed to be socialist and it definitely had social protections associated with socialism. But economic and political backwardness produced a regime that had old Czarist bureaucrats and commissars running things and a Communist Party pushing the brutal process of rapid industrialization rather than a capitalist class such as happened in the West. The Soviet Union would become a superpower but after its fall, it would disintegrate into several nation states.

Many Republicans have been pumping up their chests and hyperventilating about Vladimir Putin and the Russian Federation. A few years ago, Barack Obama was calmer. He said that “Russia is a regional power that is threatening some of its immediate neighbors — not out of strength but weakness ... I continue to be much more concerned when it comes to our security with the prospect of a nuclear weapon going off in Manhattan.”

However, recent events have increased Russia’s tensions with NATO and the

U.S. Ironically, quite a few rightwingers in the United States and Europe consider Putin to be a heroic figure. In 2013, paleoconservative intellectual Pat Buchanan authored a piece entitled “Is Putin One of Us?” in which he noted that while a “de-Christianized” United States has been embracing “homosexual marriage, pornography, promiscuity, and the whole panoply of Hollywood values,” the Russian president has stood up for traditional values. He praised Putin’s disparaging of homosexuals, feminists and immigrants.

“Putin may be seeing the future with more clarity than Americans still caught up in a Cold War paradigm,” Buchanan said. He reassured his readers that “Putin says his mother had him secretly baptized as a baby and professes to be a Christian.”

Buchanan is a political commentator and politician who was a senior advisor to Presidents Nixon, Ford and Reagan. Over the years, he has gotten in trouble over anti-Semitic and racist remarks.

He said the Russian president “is seeking to redefine the ‘Us vs. Them’ world conflict of the future as one in which conservatives, traditionalists and nationalists of all continents and countries stand up against the cultural and ideological imperialism of what he sees as a decadent West.” see THE ANDERSON FILES Page 7

Now I know not to vote for Danish

You do your readers a great service by informing them that Paul Danish is a candidate for Boulder County Commissioner. His recent piece opposing a tax on sugary drinks provides all the information any thinking voter needs in order to know how silly it would be to vote for this man.

If you limit yourself to the facts, the argument is very simple: 1) Sugar, especially in the highly processed forms of it found in soft drinks, is bad for you. Lots of sugar is very bad for you. All scientific research supports this fact. No study shows that processed sugar is beneficial in the human diet.

2) Sugary drinks have no nutritive

value. You only have to read the nutritional label to find this out. They consist only of calories in the form of sugar.

3) Reduced sugar in the human diet leads to better health outcomes — again, a fact supported by research, where it has been found that excessive consumption of sugar is a risk factor for obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

4) A sugary-drinks tax has the general effect of reducing the consumption of sugary drinks, and as a sequel, of encouraging better health outcomes.

If Mr. Danish were concerned with facts he would perhaps study them and get on board with the proposed tax.

In a rather startling observation for a conservative, Buchanan said: “President Reagan once called the old Soviet Empire ‘the focus of evil in the modern world.’ President Putin is implying that Barack Obama’s America may deserve the title in the 21st century.”

Fast forward to 2016. Buchanan is supporting Trump. Putin is saying that Trump is “brilliant and very talented” while Trump says, “I’ve always felt fine with Putin” who is a “strong” and “powerful” leader unlike that weakling Obama. When told that several journalists critical of the Putin regime were murdered, Trump casually shrugged it off.

The Trump-Putin bromance is not unique. Putin has warm alliances with far-right parties in Europe which have politics similar to Trump — from Britain’s UKIP party to Jobbik in Hungary, The National Front in France, Golden Dawn in Greece, the National Democratic Party in Germany and Bulgaria’s Ataka party. The most conspicuous example is Marine Le Pen’s National Front in France which, according to the New York Times, “confirmed taking an $11.7 million loan from the First Czech-Russian Bank in Moscow, which has been tied to the Kremlin. She has denied a news report that the money was just the first installBoulder Weekly

ment of an eventual $50 million in loans to help her party through a presidential election in 2017.”

Le Pen has endorsed Trump. So has her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, the founder and former leader of the party. He is notorious for outrageous statements such as his claim that the Nazi occupation of France wasn’t “particularly inhumane”and for suggesting that Ebola might solve Europe’s “immigration problem.”

American and European officials have claimed that Russia is fighting economic sanctions over its annexation of Crimea by spreading disinformation and funding both right-wing and leftwing parties throughout Europe.

“Russian influence in the affairs of the far right is a phenomenon seen all over Europe,” said a study by the Political Capital Institute, a Hungarian research group. It predicted that farright parties, “spearheaded by the French National Front,” could form a pro-Russian bloc in the European Parliament. It said 15 far-right European parties are “committed” to Russia.

If Trump is elected, perhaps Putin will also have a friend in the White House.

guest column Stand strong and united to win against TPP

W

hen it comes to some of the world’s biggest trade deals, Coloradans are often left in the dark until it’s too late.

That’s exactly what happened with the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a proposed trade deal between the United States and 11 other governments that, if approved by Congress, would ship jobs overseas and increase threats to our air, water and climate.

We’ve already seen how trade deals hurt our jobs and our wages. Over 20 years ago, the U.S. was promised economic prosperity from the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA. Instead, the deal has led to job displacement in all 50 states, including a net loss of 11,300 jobs in Colorado — a net loss that has hurt our economy and wages.

The TPP only stands to exacerbate the problem — we’ll be competing with corporations relocating to countries like Vietnam, where the average minimum wage is a meager 70 cents per hour. At a time when we’re fighting for fair, livable wages, this is beyond unacceptable.

It’s not just jobs that are at stake — the health of our environment hangs in the balance too. The TPP tilts the playing field in favor of multinational fossil fuel corporations, with an “investor-state dispute settlement” provision that allows corporations to sue governments in private trade tribunals, where they can demand our taxpayer dollars for environmental protections meant to keep us safe. We saw this threat laid bare just recently when TransCanada, the company behind the destructive and unnecessary Keystone XL pipeline, announced its plans to use investor-state provisions in NAFTA to sue the U.S. government for $15 billion in so-called “expected revenues” for the Administration’s rejection of the toxic pipeline. For us in Colorado, that’s the equivalent of about $100 from each individual income tax return.

Colorado’s taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay multinational corporations for

American laws that we voted for to protect the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food on our dinner tables.

And yet, corporations have launched hundreds of these lawsuits under similar trade deals, increasingly focusing their attacks on fossil fuel restrictions.

The TPP also includes provisions that would give a lifeline to fracking across Colorado and the United States at a time when many of us Coloradans are pushing to restrict fracking so as to protect our air, water and health. By requiring the U.S. Department of Energy to automatically approve all exports of natural gas to countries in the trade deal, the TPP would facilitate increased dangerous fracking and climate-disrupting emissions. In addition, the TPP would nearly double the number of foreign fracking firms that could challenge our protections against fracking in private, unaccountable investorstate tribunals.

In 2015, hundreds of thousands of activists in the climate movement fought against a bill in Congress to fast-track this deal. Ultimately, it squeaked by, and Congress lost its ability to have meaningful input in trade deals like the TPP. Instead, if TPP comes to Congress, our representatives will only be able to vote yes or no.

Last year, Congressman Ed Perlmutter and Congresswoman Diana DeGette voted in the interests of Colorado’s workers, families and environment when they voted no to fasttrack authority for the TPP. We need them to stand with our families, our jobs, and our access to clean water and clean air once again by saying no to the toxic TPP. As workers and environmentalists, we’ve stood up to big polluters before — and won. As we face off against this polluter-friendly trade deal, we must stand strong and united to win again.

of the popular imagination: big government, over-regulation, well-meaning liberals, the nanny state, food police.

His freewheeling and folksy style is no doubt a balm for people like himself who take greater comfort in reacting and emoting than in thinking and analyzing. But if you are inclined to analyze Mr. Danish’s writing in this piece you will find that there is really nothing there — he simply has a knee-jerk reaction and begins shooting wildly from the hip to defend it without regard for logic, reasoning or evidence. Indeed, I am tempted to use Mr. Danish’s column in my classes at CU as a case study of the various forms of fallacious logic and specious rhetoric.

A broader question that his column raises, and one that I hope your editors might address at some point, is this: why are readers of your paper subjected to this fooforaw? Doesn’t Boulder County have one of the highest rates of education in the country? Surely we deserve better than this.

While receiving my nursing degree many years ago, I recited the Florence Nightingale pledge to “devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care.” To this day, I take my pledge very seriously. In my job as a public health nurse, “those committed to my care” included the entire community.

I am proud to be member of the most trusted profession in the country (Gallup poll) and believe that our state’s 72,000 nurses have the power to transform the course of health care by supporting the one plan that covers everyone. Predictable Danish

Paul Danish’s commentary on Boulder’s sugar tax ballot initiative was entertaining, yet amply slanted with his dislike of government regulations and taxes. He claims the proposed 2 cent per ounce tax on sugary drinks is counter-productive and too aggravating.

He omitted a cogent example of a Boulder Weekly

beneficial health-related tax, the tobacco taxes, with its clear associated decrease in smoking rates. The percent U.S. smokers has fallen from 30 percent in 1990 down to 17 percent in 2011.

With approximately 1/2 million deaths annually attributable to smoking, the decreased smoking rate is well worth the aggravation of supposed “Nanny-statism” taxes.

Sugary beverages surprisingly are nearly as damaging as smoking. Excess sugar, especially fructose, causes “fatty liver” (hepatic lipogenesis), which activates proteins that block insulin signaling, thereby causing insulin resistance, type II diabetes. It comprises 90 percent to 95 percent of all diabetes. In 2010, diabetes contributed to over 234,000 deaths. It leads to heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, amputations, blindness, deafness and 6-year-shorter lifespan. We can become behaviorally addicted to high sugar content, especially for youth. At current growth rates, 1/3 of U.S. population will have diabetes by 2050.

Excess sugar also causes obesity and cavities. If that is not enough, consider our nation’s $322 billion annual cost of diabetes.

The diseases incited by excess sugar can be greatly reduced by a higher price on sugary drinks, plus related health education and support. Boulder’s ballot initiative dedicates all its tax for these purposes.

Thus, it may be even more effective than the tobacco tax, which averages only 2 percent of its tax for related health education and support. I respect Danish’s vast experience, yet find him inappropriate for our County Commissioner today. Our people want our County to proactively protect our public health and environmental sustainability much more strongly, than Paul Danish has demonstrated.

Denver man dies fighting ISIS in search of something more

J

ordan MacTaggart’s life was a self-fulfilled prophecy. To see his future, all you had to do was look at his hands where the words “born dead” had been carved into his knuckles and inked.

The tattoo proved apropos, its fatalistic message outlasting the young man who wore it.

In December of 2015, Nicole McNulty profiled MacTaggart for Boulder Weekly in a story titled “Born Dead: From the boredom of Denver to the sheer terror of Syria.”

MacTaggert was 21 at the time and living in Denver as he prepared to return to the Middle East for a second time to fight against ISIS as a volunteer in the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG).

He wasn’t Kurdish. In fact, he had absolutely no ties to the people or the region. He had merely watched the news reports of the conflict and made the decision to go and fight, and it wasn’t out of some sense of justice.

The truth is, MacTaggart simply found his life in

Denver to be too boring and unfulfilling to bear.

He described his life in Denver to BW. “Every other day I woke up and I had to go to work, but it wasn’t a purpose. I woke up and didn’t want to get out of bed. [But in Syria] I woke up and was like, ‘I can’t wait to be bored and suffer because at least I’m doing something.’ Even though it was as bad as it was, it felt right. I liked it. I love being out there. It’s such a break from all this ... I could live like that (war) forever. If you provide me housing, food and water and all I have to do is not get shot and kill those guys, I’ll do that for the rest of my life. I’m totally OK with this.

It’s so much better.”

Until it wasn’t.

Jordan MacTaggart died a few days ago fighting alongside his companions in the YPG. His unit was part of the well-publicized assault against ISIS-held territory in areas around Aleppo that is still underway at the time of this writing. The details of his death are sketchy at best. All we know is that he was killed during an effort to free villages from ISIS control in proximity to the city of Manbij.

Was MacTaggart a hero, a freedom fighter? I wish I could say yes for the sake of his family and friends. But I think he was just a sad and confused

young man in search of something more than what he saw filling the lives of the people he knew in Colorado. I don’t know what he was ultimately looking for and I am haunted by the fear he never found it.

In 2015, when he believed his death was eminent, he recorded the words “Don’t let it be in vain.”

When I went online to verify that he had been killed this past Sunday, the first website I came to announcing his death had 90 comments under the story. As I began to read them one after another, a dozen after another dozen, it became clear that they were all angry messages of hate being traded between Kurds, Turks and Syrians. None of them even mentioned MacTaggart except occasionally to say they were glad he had been killed. It all seemed in vain.

And then I found this lone comment buried amidst all the hate, the centuries worth of hate: “RIP hero!

You defended the freedom of Kurds and humanity.”

Let’s hold on to that one and hope that it’s true — that somehow peace and rest and the need for fulfillment that drove him, have finally come for Jordan MacTaggart, a kid from Denver who just wanted something more.

he majestic views of the Flatirons. The buskers on Pearl Street. Organic food companies and winding bike paths. This is what Boulder is known for and why many of us love it. Boulder is not, however, known for its diversity.

According to the 2015 U.S. Census, 90 percent of Boulder County residents are white, up 3 percent from 2010 and 13 percent more than the national average. The median income is more than $15,000 above the national average at roughly $69,400. This can create endless issues from affordable housing to biased policing and more. “In Boulder, I think people have always wanted to have a self-image of a liberal city that’s really welcoming and open to diversity. But when you talk to underrepresented people, the flipside to that, is that may not necessarily be what’s happening and that may not be the experience of minorities in the city,” says Nikhil Mankekar from the City of Boulder’s Human Relations Commission. “You have this dichotomy between what the self-image of the City is and what’s actually happening. ... So my goal has been to be as honest about that as Boulder County,” she says. “The face I see is a beautiful multi-cultural face of all colors and all languagpossible so we can come up with solutions.” es. One such opportunity is the eligibility to vote, which Soto, despite her civic activism, lacks. “This time of year is very important, I believe people are very distracted by the presidential candidates,” she says. “I would like to bring it back home and say we have some local positions that are up for reelection and we want to make sure that our elected representatives do in fact care about our community issues.”

Salam Hindawi is also concerned with the upcoming elections, more specifically how the political rhetoric has changed since he moved here in 2014, and the effect that rhetoric is having on society.

“This is not what I expected,” says Hindawi who is a Syrian refugee studying human geography at CU Boulder. “I’m not saying that there is a lot of hatred but I’m afraid that the political scene will affect the reality.”

With an undergraduate degree in ArabicEnglish translation from Syria, Hindawi was conscripted into the Syrian Army after graduation.

With no hope of ever being released, he defected in 2012.

“Not only because at one point I imagined I would be choosing between killing or getting killed, but because I was wasting my life,” he says. “And in my political view, I was against the Assad regime because they were using brutal force against the Syrian people.”

Encouraged to apply for the program at CU by a professor from Princeton Hindawi met in Aleppo in 2004, he was accepted and came to the U.S. on a student visa in December 2014.

Since moving to Colorado, he hasn’t experienced overt discrimination or stereotyping but, “I can’t be inside someone’s brain when I tell them I’m from Syria,” he says.

“What I’m afraid of is the effect of the political rhetoric on the reality that someday maybe this is what people will think.”

His two sisters live in Turkey and his youngest brother in Germany, while his parents remain in Aleppo. “Sometimes they have no water for a month, sometimes no electricity for a month or two, I’m not kidding at all. The prices are very high,” he says.

“The Syrian people are losing. We hope for the war to be over and the political process to start but unfortunately that’s not in our hands.”

For now, Hindawi is applying for asylum in the U.S. while he has temporary protective status that allows him to work in addition to going to school.

Having grown up with an awareness of America, he says diversity is “the true spirit of this country.” He adds, “This country was established on the idea that you can come over here and start a good life. In that way, Boulder could be representative of the true spirit of the United States, the true spirit of America, the land of the free.”

or anyone who worked at gathering signatures in 2014 to put local control over energy extraction and/or setbacks for drilling and production operations on the ballot that year, it’s been a really long 24 months with heartbreak and joy for bookends.

As all who’ve been involved in this David verses Goliath struggle will recall, in 2014, political slight of hand led to more than a quarter million voter signatures being tossed into the trash at the last minute.

But that was then and this is now. On Monday, Aug. 8, with approximately 15 minutes to spare before the 3 p.m. deadline, more than 200,000 signatures were turned over to the Colorado Secretary of State to be counted and authenticated.

The grassroots coalition calling itself “Yes for Health and Safety Over Fracking” submitted the signatures which represent more than enough Colorado voters to place two initiatives on this year’s November ballot.

Initiative #75 is titled “Local Governmental Control of Oil and Gas Development.” And according to a statement released by the coalition, “Using state rules as a foundation, the measure would give local governments a wide range of options to protect their communities and neighborhoods from the harms associated with oil and gas development, including hydraulic fracturing.”

The second initiative, #78, is titled “Mandatory Setbacks from Oil and Gas Development.” Those turning in the signatures claim it “establishes a buffer zone of 2,500’ (less than 1/2 mile) between new oil and gas development, including fracking, and homes, hospitals, schools, and sensitive areas like playgrounds and drinking water sources. ... It also takes into account the perimeters of real-life explosion, evacuation, and burn zones.”

The number of valid signatures from registered Colorado voters needed to place an initiative on this year’s November ballot is just under 99,000. More than that number of signatures were turned in for both initiatives #75 and #78. The exact number turned in for each is still unknown because the signature gathering process actually picked up steam over the final weekend and continued right up until the deadline, making an exact final count impossible.

The Secretary of State now has 30 days to count and authenticate the signatures. If the final number of approved signatures stays above the minimum threshold, both measures will appear on the November ballot and voters will finally, after more than three years of effort, have the right to vote to protect their families, homes and communities from the welldocumented harms of fracking and oil and gas extraction in close proximity to where people live.

To date, the oil and gas industry has spent tens of millions of dollars to stop the anti-fracking movement’s momentum. It has exerted massive political pressure including (by its own admission) the takeover of some city councils. It continues to pump millions into the largest advertising spend in state history on TV and in newspapers in its attempt to influence news coverage of the industry.

And finally, the industry has created and funded multiple oil and gas front groups run by the most powerful political operatives in the state, including Coloradans for Responsible Energy Development (CRED), Vital for Colorado, Protect Colorado and the Common Sense Policy Roundtable in its effort to keep Initiatives #75 and #78 off the ballot.

But as of Monday, Aug. 8, it appears that informed and motivated voters are still the most powerful force in Colorado democracy.

Ability to choose Ashley Byrne strips down in Brazil to raise awareness for animal rights

Byrne is a former University of Colorado Boulder graduate. She studied creative writing and political science, but for the last nine years, Byrne has worked coordinating campaigns for PETA, the animals rights organization known around the world for their undercover work exposing factory farms and laboratories for animal cruelty. PETA actually stormed onto the international scene in 1980 with what became known as the Silver Spring monkeys case, when the organization revealed that 17 macaque monkeys were being experimented on inside the Institute of Behaviorial Research in Silver Spring, Maryland. The case lasted a decade and led to the only police raid on an animal laboratory in the U.S., as well as an amendment to the Animal Welfare Act. But PETA has also taken criticism over the years for campaigns that some consider shocking — even offensive. Some of these campaigns involve wrapping PETA employees in fake blood and plastic, some involve graphic photography of laboratories and factory farms, but many employ nudity — or near nudity — to spread the message.

Along with other colleagues from PETA, Byrne stripped down to nearly nothing to “bathe” on the streets of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

“We’re trying to illustrate that the meat industry and animal product industry is a nightmare for the environment,” Byrne explains on a Skype call from Rio on Aug. 2. She’s preparing to head into one of São Paulo’s busiest thoroughfares, Paulista Avenue, to kick the campaign off with a demonstration.

With all eyes on Brazil for the world’s biggest athletic event, Byrne says, it’s the perfect place to deliver the message.

The medium for the message was a bathtub of pretty women in two of the world’s busiest streets. The women, all working with PETA, held signs that explain it takes as much water to produce a pound of beef as it does for the average person to take showers for six months.

“According to United Nations, the meat industry is responsible for more greenhouse gases than all transportation combined: cars, planes, trains, everything,” she says. “The meat industry is responsible for every environmental problem: soil erosion, water contamination, climate change, wasted resources ... The bathtub is a way to illustrate that for people. Facts and figures don’t always work well, so we do something unusual to sum things up in a surprising visual.”

It’s no surprise to Byrne that some people find this ridiculous, even exploitative of the female body. But PETA’s co-founder, Ingrid Newkirk, has consistently maintained that no one working on the organization’s cam-

paigns is forced to take part in anything they don’t feel comfortable about.

Newkirk has also stated that sexual attraction is a fact of human life, and a tactic employed by nearly every commercial industry on the planet — if it can work to advance animal welfare, it’s the right thing to do.

Byrne likewise dismisses the notion that these campaigns are anti-feministic in nature.

“These campaigns are largely run by women. I’m a feminist, my colleague [participating in the demonstrations in Brazil] is a feminist. My boss is a woman, her boss is a woman and so on,” she explains. “For us, I think one of the most important aspects of feminism is you respect a woman’s decisions, so if women want to stand up for an issue they believe in, whether that is by taking off their clothes and taking a shower on the sidewalk or standing fully clothed and handing out leaflets, that’s to be respected. I think we should all respect the decisions of other adults to do what they are comfortable doing.”

For Byrne, doing demos that involve nudity or sexuality is about making a choice. Animals, she says, never get to make a choice about what happens to their bodies.

“Female animals in particular in the dairy and egg industry suffer immensely because of the fact they are female.

And so I feel that I’m making a choice. ... I can choose and they can’t. As a feminist, that absolutely feels like the right decision for me to be making.”

Byrne is, perhaps predictably, a vegan, but that wasn’t always the case.

school. Her family moved to Colorado during her senior year of high school, and it was actually a night of mischievousness that would become the turning point in her life.

“My boyfriend and I snuck into a showing of Faces of Death and we saw a lot of slaughterhouse footage of animals being killed,” Byrne says of the 1978 exploitation pseudo-documentary.

“There were a lot of things in that documentary that seemed to be fake, but we knew the slaughterhouse footage of animals being tortured was real. There was a segment where people were skinning alive and boiling dogs in another country and I was devastated. I had grown up with dogs and cats and they were members of the family and I loved them and knew they felt pain and fear and had emotions.”

The narrator of the movie, Michael Carr, explains that while such an act may be shocking to those from cultures where it’s not common to eat dogs, it was no different than eating cow, pig or chicken. Since there was “no scientific difference” between these animals, Carr has dinner with a family that slaughtered a dog.

“I couldn’t agree with that,” Byrne says. “There was nothing that made it better to eat a chicken than a dog. I couldn’t accept it could possibly be OK to skin a dog and eat it. I realized if I could never be OK with the idea of eating a dog or a cat that it was time for me to stop eating chickens and pigs and cows and fish.”

Byrne immediately began a vegetarian diet and went vegan a year later.

She says the demonstrations PETA puts on aren’t meant to simply shock

and expose problems, but to deliver solutions as well.

“We never do something like this without being armed with a solution,” she says. “By eating vegan, or by even choosing to cut down on the meat and dairy you are eating, you can make a difference. This is an easy, accessible way to help the environment. Not everyone can buy a hybrid car or go out and put solar panels on their home, but by just eating a vegan diet, that’s a really empowering way to make a change in the face of these environmental problems that can be really frightening.”

The demonstrations in São Paulo and Rio went well, Byrne says a few days later. People asked lots of questions, mainly if it was true that it took that much water to produce livestock.

Byrne says she sees this change occurring all over the world — people no longer see animals as separate from humans. They see humans as, quite rightfully, a type of animal.

“I’ve been a PETA member for 20 years,” she says. “I think there has been an enormous shift in the way the public sees issues surrounding animals and being vegan. When I started PETA, the first campaign I worked on was exposing cruelty to chickens that KFC worked with. … In those early years people would ask, ‘Can chickens even feel pain?’ That has shifted so dramatically. I feel like I rarely hear that now.

People just have more information and realize these animals are intelligent and sensitive and have close family bonds and care about their offspring.

It makes people much more receptive about not eating them and not wearing them.”

‘The market is for me, too’ Harvest Bucks program doubles SNAP dollars at Boulder County Farmers Markets

ur mission is essentially two fold,” says Brian Coppom, Executive Director of Boulder County Farmers Markets (BCFM). “One is to support local agriculture and the other is to connect growers and the community. Part of how we attempt to meet our mission is in normalizing this way of shopping so that the majority of people are participating in it.

It is really about changing the way people perceive food and what it means in their lives.”

On any given Saturday, 9,000 people come to the Longmont and Boulder farmers’ markets, or just less than .5 percent of the population. In some ways, that is a very big number, especially when you consider all of those people packed into two little market squares.

But in other ways that number is small, especially when you consider that the people who attend are usually only those who can afford to come.

“I think the markets are often seen as being an expensive alternative to grocery stores,” Coppom says. “That is true if you compare them directly in terms of just price.”

Price matters to everybody, but especially for low-income

shoppers. To try and increase that number, BCFM partnered with Boulder County Public Health to match SNAP dollars with Harvest Bucks, a farmers’-market specific benefit for both SNAP and Women, Infant and Children program recipients.

The partnership essentially doubles the amount of money available to participants of the federal program.

SPILL DISPUTE FINALLY SETTLED

Six years after more than 25,000 barrels of oil spilled from two different pipelines in the Midwest, Enbridge Energy Limited Partnership reached a settlement with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Justice (DOJ), agreeing to pay a total of $177 million for cleanup costs and mandatory improvement measures. In July 2010, control room settings alerted Enbridge multiple times that there were pipe issues on the 6B line in Marshall, Michigan, but they NTSB.gov were ignored and the pipeline ruptured.

Regardless, the company restarted the pipeline the next day as oil leaked into the Kalamazoo River for 35 miles into Lake Michigan. Then two months later in Romeoville, Illinois, another pipe broke and spilled into a retention pond for the Des Plaines River.

The two incidents cost the energy company $62 million in Clean Water Act fines, $5.4 in reimbursements to the federal government for clean up, which took three years, and a pledge of $110 million for upgraded machinery and operations. The settlement requires Enbridge to replace almost 300 miles of their Great Lake-area pipelines, improve inspection and emergency response procedures and conduct independent third-party audits.

“This agreement puts in place advanced leak detection and monitoring requirements to make sure a disaster like this one doesn’t happen again,” said Cynthia Giles, assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assuranc, in a press release.

SIGNS OF ATMOSPHERIC RECOVERY

New research shows that the ozone hole above Antarctica is shrinking. The study, led by Massachusetts Institute of Technology chemist Susan Solomon and conducted by experts from the University of Leeds and the National Center of Atmospheric Research, was published in the journal Science last month.

The hole appears annually between August and October, forming when colder temperatures create a reaction in the stratosphere and ozone concentration dips. Researchers measuring ozone levels with weather balNASA.gov loons over the last 15 years noticed the hole is opening slower, later and smaller. They also believe it has shrunk in size by more than 1.5 million square miles.

“It gives us hope that we shouldn’t be afraid to tackle large environmental problems,” Solomon told National Geographic.

In the 1980s, telescopic observation led to the discovery of the Antarctic ozone depletion area, which sent the scientific community into a frenzy trying to figure out what was causing the damage and how to stop it. It has generally been attributed to the release of chlorofluorocarbons and other pollutants released into the atmosphere. A series of international climate agreements banned chlorofluorocarbons, namely the 1987 Montreal Protocol.

While the new research proves to some degree the effectiveness of international climate treaties, it’s estimated that it will be another 40 to 50 years before the ozone hole vanishes completely.

Pennsylvania native sets out to hike 100 miles, summit her first 14er and raise $500

hree bracelets on her wrist remind her what she’s hiking for; one has the coordinates of her Pennsylvania home, the other two are from her younger sisters. She musters her strength to fight through the end of a kidney infection on her way to see the stark contrast of jagged gray peaks diving down into the blue green water of Emerald Lake.

Emily’s Miles for Smiles is Emily Beehler’s mission to hike one hundred miles while raising money for the Colorado Mountain Club’s (CMC) Youth Education Program.

“Everybody wants to do good and everybody wants to give back somehow,” Beehler says. “A lot of people can’t, either physically, time-wise, something. So they’re more than happy to give money because that’s how they are able to do good.

“I’ll do the hiking and the work if you just support me and help support the kids,” she says.

Beehler is raising money through CMC’s MountainUp campaign, where individuals set goals for themselves and create personal fundraisers. Campaigners donate money to CMC overall or choose a specific program, like the Youth Education Program or Conservation Program. “[CMC] is one of Colorado’s oldest organizations promoting outdoor recreation and education to get out into the mountains

safely and sustainably,” says Leslie Woollenweber, development director for the club.

“We’re here for everybody that wants to learn about and enjoy the mountains,” she says. “All ages, all skill levels, we welcome everyone.”

Other campaigners have set goals of climbing seven 14ers, running the Pikes Peak marathon and hiking 10,000 feet of elevation gain, Woollenweber says. So far they’ve raised $3,000 of the $10,000 goal.

Beehler was the second person to sign up for MountainUp, putting all her money toward the 7,000 kids served each year by the Youth Education Program. Her funds will go to education programs and getting kids into the mountains.

“The first weekend in July, when I signed up for MountainUp, I actually was sick, I had a kidney infection so I couldn’t really get hiking,” Beehler says. “Really my body needed to rest.”

But she didn’t stay down long.

“I’m not good at just relaxing,” she says. “I want to be out doing stuff and I especially was so excited about doing MountainUp so I went up to Estes and just strung together a few small hikes.” see HIKING Page 26

The short trail to Emerald Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park is a popular tourist destination. The path from Bear Lake trailhead gains 650 feet of elevation over 1.8 miles. The welltraveled trail glimpses Nymph Lake, borders Dream Lake and offers views of Longs Peak, Hallett Peak and the craggy spires of Flattop Mountain, all while water melting from the nearby Tyndall Glacier burbles down the gorge.

Determined to get her fundraising started, on July 4, despite her troublesome kidney, Beehler made it to five lakes. In front of glittering Emerald Lake, nestled beneath Hallett Peak, she pulled out a handmade MountainUp sign and asked a nearby family to snap a picture.

Next thing she knew a crowd gathered and began asking about MountainUp. “I started explaining it to them and explaining the Youth Education Program and what I was doing, that I wanted to hike at least a hundred miles to get as much support as I can and funding for our youth program,” Beehler says. “It was so cool, everybody then was cheering me on when I left Emerald Lake to keep going to Lake Haiyaha ... it was like I had a whole fan squad right there with me.”

Beehler’s support goes far beyond the people she’s met on the trail.

She set a goal of $500, expecting to get a hundred or two. But she’s already raised $565. Distant friends have reached out, sending messages and donations, including a boy she hasn’t been close with since middle school.

“He donated $20 to me and left the sweetest note [saying], ‘I see what you’re doing on Facebook and I’m so proud of you and what you’re doing and it’s inspiring,’” she says. “Oh my gosh I just cried when I read it.”

A rookie to the Rockies, Beehler moved to Colorado from Pennsylvania, in January as an intern for the CMC. She’s since become a teacher for the Youth Education Program.

Beehler works toward her hundred miles on weekends and spends her weeks with kids.

“I learn each week, from every kid,” she says. “Sometimes I think I learn more than they do.”

One of her most memorable trips was her first time out as group leader.

She described the group as brave, confident and possibly the happiest she’s ever worked with. They also happen to be blind.

“I had no clue what to expect ’cause they were gonna go climbing and they were meeting us at a trailhead and we

were gonna go hike and then climb and the trail was crazy rocky,” Beehler says.

“But these kids, right off the bat they were trusting me and just... they were so incredible, they were so positive,” she says.

“Through climbing they cheered each other on in an amazing way and I was really surprised the way that they were able to remember features in the route,” she says. “There was one part that had a really hard overhang and this one boy who tried it first and did get to the top, I told him when another girl was climbing it, I was like, ‘Oh, she’s at the hard part,’ and he was able to tell her exactly what to do. He remembered each hold in each part of the rock almost more so than other groups that I’ve seen.

“These kids can’t see what’s in front of them and they just trust it and they go with it and their trust in people that they just met is incredible,” Beehler says. “So I really took away a lot from them.”

Not all days on the trail are quite so inspiring. But for Beehler, the people she meets along the way bring back the magic.

One particularly hard day she struck out for Bear Peak in Boulder and took a wrong turn. She wasn’t feeling well and was dejected about not reaching the summit. But on the way down she came across two women, smiled and asked them how they were. They stopped her to thank her for being so friendly.

“I had my Colorado Mountain Club hat on and they were asking me about it,” Beehler says. “They were new to the area and they were like, ‘Wow, we need that, we need to find people to go out and hike with. We want to learn. We want to learn how to ice climb, we want to learn how to cross-country ski ... we want to be outside and engaged, but we just don’t know all that’s available and accessible.’ And they felt really empowered by the possibility that Colorado Mountain Club could offer them.”

They turned the day around for Beehler. Whenever she is struggling, she looks down at her bracelets to remind herself why she’s out there.

“My youngest sister Carly is the reason that I want to work with kids,” Beehler says. “I want to empower kids.

I want people to feel smart and strong and capable of doing whatever they want to do. And I want them to know that possibilities are out there, you just need to push for it and hiking for me is that push.”

She’s a writer’s writer. Every time I hear her I want to head out on a cross-country road trip all alone in the middle of an empty landscape. I have no higher compliment than that.

As for real up and comers, you’ll be remembering the name Parker Millsap (see interview page 37). Not only does he have a great voice, he’ll be one of the only people in Lyons I can sit down with and talk about the view out over the Canadian River off the backside of Red Hill in Purcell, Oklahoma.

That’s because both of us were born there.

And I can personally attest that view stays with you for life and has a way of making it into your writing when you least expect it.

The list and the talent goes on and on, Kathy Matea, Cheryl Wheeler, the incredible energy and vocal work of The Lone Bellow and much more.

We hope you enjoy this special Folks Festival section we’ve put together this year. We spoke with a number of the interesting people who will be performing.

This is truly one of the best top-to-bottom lineups I’ve seen at this or any other festival. So if you’ve been waiting to start your own streak of Folks Fest attendance, this is definitely the year to get it going. Life’s too short to miss out. Those lines on the door frame never come back down.

A

ndrew Bird has his own reality TV show.

Which seems uncharacteristic for the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist known for his whimsical lyrics and perfectly pitched whistling. But nevertheless it’s true, at least in a certain sense.

“It’s your world, I’m just living in it,” says recent guest Jim James from My Morning Jacket, appearing barefoot and wearing sunglasses next to an equally shoeless Bird. The two are standing in front of microphones, guitar and violin in hand. They spend the next 30 unscripted minutes or so casually chatting in between what Bird calls a setlist of “protest songs.”

It’s another episode of “Live from the Great Room,” a web series of acoustic duets filmed with smartphones and GoPro cameras from Bird’s Los Angeles living room and posted using Facebook Live.

“It’s very scrappy,” Bird says. “Because it’s kind of off the cuff and relies on musicianship, I can get with it.”

Taking a break both from the festival circuit this summer and touring with his ninth solo album Are You Serious released earlier this year, Bird has spent the summer recording “Live from the Great Room” with a different musician each week, including appearances by Chris Thile, John C. Reilly and others.

“It kinda keeps me on my toes musically, and I’m learning a lot from it,” Bird says. “I’m enjoying forcing myself to play with other people. The night before they come over I’m always staying up thinking about what I want to ask them. It brings the focus towards musicianship.”

Which hasn’t so much been his focus the last little while, as Bird has been writing, recording and promoting the new

album. “With this record I’ve been getting into personal territory and that was driving me nuts so [“Live from the Great Room”] helps bring it back to the music,” he says.

Before getting into the more intimate background of the new songs, I have to ask him what inspired the name of the new album, wondering if it’s intended as a rhetorical question, some sort of social or perhaps even spiritual commentary.

Personally, I tell him, the phrase feels like a reoccurring and versatile reaction of mine these days.

Bird explains it has actually been the working title he’s given every previous record; an inside joke with his managers for years — “This is what you spent the last two years on?” Bird says. “Really?”

But this time around, “are you serious” fit with the completed project as well.

“This one seemed apropos because when I started out making records I never saw myself as the kind of songwriter that was bearing their soul in a very matter of fact way or their personal travails via song,” he says. “My personal things are in every song but there’s an art to encoding or masking it. But now all of that stuff is close to the surface, less encoded.”

Are You Serious is Bird’s most personal record yet, mostly written at his family’s Illinois farm in about the course of a week during his recent relocation from New York to Los Angeles. The album chronicles previous break-ups, Bird’s marriage to a fashion designer, the birth of their son and his wife’s battle with cancer.

Despite skipping out on touring the festival scene this summer, Andrew Bird will be at Rocky Mountain Folks Festival.

“I’ve never had any problem talking about what my songs are about ever. ... There are a lot of lyrics in my songs and I don’t feel like I’m ever going to demystify them for you by talking about them,” Bird says, comparing that to many artists who decline to talk about the personal stories behind their work. “But now I get it because when you do write a song that is very close to the bone or is actually about something that happened that was rough, then when you talk about it, it’s tricky. It’s kind of a minefield.”

While Bird admits he’s perfectly comfortable singing the new songs, talking about them is a different story.

“There’s a sacred pact between you and the audience. The concert hall is a safe place, the people will have your back,” he says. “But then you step out of the concert hall and you start talking about it in journalistic forms and that’s a different game.”

And so our conversation skirts around specifics, perhaps out of some obligation I feel to respect the aforementioned pact. Instead, I ask him if he thinks he’ll keep writing personal songs or go back to the more abstract lyrics of previous albums.

“I like to go in whatever direction feels like I’m learning something or challenging myself,” he says. “The real frontier for me over the years is distilling things and writing things that are more simple without being boring.”

And then we fall into an easier rhythm of conversation, talking about politics and the never-ending news cycle of gun violence. It’s a more comfortable place — important, but not too intimate.

And that brings us back to the protest songs from the “Live from the Great Room” episode with James.

“I bristle a little bit when it’s suggested that songwriters or artists have a duty,” Bird says. “The only duty we really have is to our art and ourselves ultimately. So I always say I’m observing and looking at how people behave in my songs and therefore they can be political. But I rarely tackle it head on.

It’s really hard to write a populist protest song in this day and age.”

But Bird doesn’t exactly shy away from writing his political beliefs into lyrics altogether. On the recording with James, he sings a new version of his song “Sic of Elephants,” which he updated particularly for this year’s Republican National Convention.

was re-elected, his attempt to try and understand how it could have happened. “And it seems almost more apropos at this moment with everything that’s going on,” Bird says in the episode, before launching in: “You were right, now we got good reason to worry...Can’t you see how dangerous the one that you chose is?”

“I have some other songs I’ve started doing again because it brings up the warrior culture we’re in,” Bird tells me.

But there’s also, “really great material that’s already been written that really fits the moment.”

Like some old Woody Guthrie lyrics that James recently put to melody as part of the tribute album New Multitudes that he sings with Bird during the live episode.

“Change the pen and change the

ink/ change the way you talk and think/ change the tubes and change the tires/ change the things your heart desires/ change your make up and change your curls/ change the ways of this changing world.”

As Bird’s world has changed, perhaps it is something akin to this mentality that has allowed his music to change along with it.

Along for the ride

Passenger is more than a clever moniker for Mike Rosenberg

ike Rosenberg is in a New York coffee shop when we get connected to chat. Maybe it’s the British accent, but he’s terribly charming.

“Whot culd be bet-tah,” he asks me, effortlessly posh, “than being in a cawfee shop in New York?”

In the moment I cahn’t really disagree — but maybe the accent is swaying my opinion.

The 32-year-old singer/ guiarist is better known by his stage name Passenger. Rosenberg wasn’t always on his oddy knocky — in 2003, Passenger was a five-piece band founded by Rosenberg and his songwriting partner Andrew Phillips. The band released just one album before breaking up in 2007, and Rosenberg decided to continue on as a solo artist under the moniker. He already had a fan base, and hell, Passenger was a pretty cool name.

But he admits it was unsettling.

A career built on busking has made Rosenberg personable, even at huge live shows, where he tells jokes You may know Mike Rosenberg easily and sometimes performs with no shoes on. He by his stage sings playful crowd pleasers like “I Hate,” which name, Passenger. bemoans everything from Facebook statuses to plastic surgery to assholes at live shows.

“Well I hate them fussy eaters/You cook them fajitas/They only eat pizza and chips/And I hate stepping outside for a smoke/And some guy coughs/like your lungs are his/And I hate queuing up/For festival toilets/Especially when you need to shit.”

“I think with my music I try and be as honest as possible and try and sort of talk about everything I see and I feel,” Rosenberg says. “I think involved in that there are a ton of different feelings, melancholy, cheeky moments and silliness. I think there’s a level of hope to it as well. I try and convey all of those things, all of those things within my personality and within every day life.

With indie folk, Rosenberg adds, “It’s not fair to write just sad music.”

However, “Let Her Go,” in its indie-folk simplicity, can leave you sad — and angry. It’s a song that shamelessly explains how one partner didn’t see the value of their mate until they ended the relationship. Whether you are the cavalier dumper or the stunned dumpee, “Let Her Go” rends the heart and makes you wonder how, exactly, things got so messed up.

But despite being an emotionally moving song, if you really dive into the lyrics, Rosenberg’s first smash hit comes across, quite frankly, like a narrow introspection of one person’s screw up.

And Rosenberg knows that.

His upcoming album, Young as the Morning Old as the Sea, incorporates those same melancholic musings on love and the passage of time, but it also expands into an adult’s desire to find inner peace.

In a nutshell, Rosenberg has grown up a little bit. Gotten older. That old chestnut.

“You know, taking a step back and seeing the bigger picture and not being so obsessed with my feelings and what’s going on in my head and my heart, looking at what’s in the broader picture,” he says.

The title track takes listeners on Rosenberg’s mental journey across the globe in search of what seems like a Maslowian state of self-actualization.

He sings, “I wanna feel the Russian winter/I wanna go to my Polish grandmother’s home/I wanna see Hungarian lanterns/I wanna walk on a road that leads to Rome/I wanna be free as the winds that blow past me/Free as the air that I breathe/Young as the morning and old as the sea.”

Back home in Brighton and Hove, Rosenberg runs a little coffee shop — perhaps why he’s so happy at the coffee shop in New York. Maybe if things quiet down one day, Rosenberg says he’d like to focus on bringing the American-stylecoffee-shop music scene to Britain. One way or another, music is what he does. It’s who he is.

If life is a trip, Rosenberg’s been a lucky passenger.

The end of the world Americana newcomer Parker Millsap gets apocolyptic on his new album

n upbeat love song might be a strange choice for the lead single from an album about the apocalypse. But not if you’re Parker Millsap.

The 23-year-old’s 2016 album The Very Last Day is full of these apparent contradictions — singing in the face of death and welcoming suffering with open arms.

I noticed a similar dissonance when we spoke in preparation for this story. For someone so interested in the end of the world, Millsap was unexpectedly cheerful and funny. But these paradoxical qualities began to make sense when he explained the album’s origin.

“Up until about six months ago it was kind of a crapshoot whether anybody was going to show up or not. We played a lot of strange places, a lot of house concerts, played a lot of coffee houses,” Millsap says.

“The last two or three tours people have been showing up.

That’s the most rewarding thing to me.”

Part of Millsap’s widespread appeal likely comes from his ability to make accessible a wide range of sounds from a distant past.

And despite its weighty subject matter, The Very Last Day doesn’t come off as morbid or overly serious. Of the album’s 11 songs, nearly half are up-tempo.

On several songs, Millsap takes a note from classic bluegrass, using fiddles and banjos to deliver what some might consider dire subject matter over a toetapping melody. These tracks contribute a free-wheeling quality to Millsap’s already energetic performance.

On The Very Last Day, Millsap doesn’t just polish up the historic sounds of the delta blues or update them to a more modern, Americana style (although he does do both of these things). He transforms them completely, in the same way Dick Dale borrowed traditional Middle Eastern sounds to create surf music in the early ’60s. The lonely, desolate sounds of the early 20th century Mississippi Delta are repurposed to evoke an apocalyptic Oklahoma wasteland. And it works.

While Millsap could have milked the apocalyptic-country-blues theme for all it was worth, he uses it instead as a backdrop on which to tell stories. Millsap’s characters and their mythological struggles are the heart of the album. His characters deal not with unfamiliar, apocalyptic issues but with real-life ones — loneliness, yearning, death and grief.

The stories aren’t of overcoming but of enduring. In nearly every song Millsap’s message comes across loud and clear: Even the end of the world isn’t the end of the world.

If you can’t get enough of those cutaways of gorgeous Rio de Janerio during your eighth hour of binge watching the Olympics, then you’re in luck.

The next best thing to actually being on the sandy white beaches of Rio is being in the Boulder Theater for Moyseis Marques and Ginga. As part of the Colorado Brazil Fest, running through Aug. 14, Marques will bring samba and forró to the Front Range. He’ll be joined on stage with the Boulder Samba School’s percussion group Bateria Alegria.

‘Suicide Squad’ is messy… but fun

aise a glass: The magic of movie making is dead.

We don’t just know, “how the sausage is made.” No, no, no. Now we press nose to glass on social media, painstakingly devouring every step of the once-secret process. And then we make the sausage-stuffers dance during press junkets, singing about how it felt to cram ground pig anus into casings. To be clear, Jared Leto is the pig anus in this analogy ...

Suicide Squad is grade A sausage. It is made from the finely grated leftovers of meatier movies, is unquestionably bad for you and is reluctantly delicious... so long as you don’t think about what you’re eating. Who cares whether writer/director David Ayers got steamrolled by executives into reshoots and reedits?! We shouldn’t know that. All that matters is whether we savor the flavor. And I did. That isn’t to say there wasn’t a regrettable post-sausage burp I felt immediately after.

Suicide Squad spends a lot of time introducing the characters — well, the characters that matter anyway — with flashback mini-movies. We meet Deadshot (Will Smith), the assassin who can’t be all bad because he procreated; Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), a deranged former therapist who passively promotes domestic abuse through her relationship with the Joker (Leto); Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), a human effing crocodile; Diablo ( Jay Hernandez), a former-gang-bangerturned-pacifist who can shoot fire from his hands, yo; Captain Boomerang ( Jai Courtney), whose trademark needs no explanation; the Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), an archeologist possessed by a witch and Rick Flag ( Joel Kinnaman), America’s bestest soldier.

Shady government A merry band of misfits assembles because they’re forced agent Amanda Waller to fight a weird witchy villain.

(Viola Davis) turns these imprisoned villains into a black ops squad tasked with defending the country against super-powered shenanigans. Only, they kind of cause the super-powered shenanigans, as the Enchantress and her brother rip open a hole in the sky because... reasons? The script sizzles with its characters, sports some quippy dialogue, but shits the bed completely in terms of coherent plotting. It’s basically “you guys go fight those guys. Also, here’s the Joker.” And yet, something about watching well-cast actors smack into stuff like they were action figures played with by malevolent children is positively delightful.

As expected, Robbie is the standout; her endearing-yet-manic murderess makes for a fantastic counter to Smith’s “too old for this shit” gruff mercenary. An opinion I don’t wish to have: Leto’s Joker is pretty damn great. Unlike Heath Ledger’s grounded anarchist take, Leto’s approach is obnoxious by intent; he reminds us the “Clown Prince of Crime” is a self-aggrandizing, abusive douchebag, not a “cool” merchant of chaos.

On a bigger scale, it is easy to slag on Suicide Squad. The film does feel stitched together, radically jumping the tracks on tone without warning and wasting time with characters that need not have been included — cough, Killer Croc and Captain Boomerang, end cough. It’s not an exemplar of the comic book genre nor a foundation from which DC Comics can make an assault on Marvel. It’s a gussiedup, mixed bag of nonsense I found to be dumb-fun not dumb-awful. Honestly, with proper planning, I’d order a second serving of this sausage any day.

W

hen it comes to movie genres, none are as distinctly American as the Western and Film Noir. The Western, populated by cowboys, Native Americans and disappearing frontiers, went from dime story novels to popular kiddie fare to wrought psychology and complex guilt. Westerns document the spirit of America and the people who populate it, but they also tell the violent tales that brought America about. The Western is melancholic; the more it succeeds, the less it can survive.

Law and order bury the past, and with the Western, that burial is one of violence.

But that violence couldn’t be confined to the frontier, and no matter how hard law and order tried to stifle it, the blood spilled out onto the rain-soaked streets of Film Noir. Here, the past was never buried and wouldn’t stay so if you tried. These men and women are doomed and they know it.

But that isn’t enough to stop them from trying.

A tiger can’t change its stripes anymore than ON THE BILL: Hell or these characters can change their wicked ways.

High Water. Century Boulder Both of these genres hail from the first half 1700 29th St, Boulder, 80301 of the 20th Century, but they occasionally crop 303-444-0583 up in modern day cinema to great effect. And in Tickets start at $7.65 www.cinemark.com Hell or High Water, they wrestle with one another with such astuteness that the film smacks of a past long gone, a present all too current and a future that seems inevitable.

The story is familiar: the Howard Brothers (Ben Foster and Chris Pine) take to robbing banks when their luck runs out and the child support piles up. Tracking them down is an aging Texas Ranger, Hamilton ( Jeff Bridges), ready to start his retirement years, and his long suffering partner (Gil Birmingham), who is more than ready for Hamilton to hang up his spurs.

Director David Mitchell and screenwriter Taylor Sheridan give Hell or High Water a poignant touch by setting the action in West Texas; here, the West isn’t disappearing, it’s gone. Broken and ground into dust by corporations and the very banks the Howard Brothers rob.

Both in style and substance, Hell or High Water is an elegy for the West; all four of these men represent a class that was poor before the recession and poorer since.

An entire way of life — the small town way of life — disappeared during those years. What resonates strongest is a simple fact: the America that few of us live in, but would love to know, will die with these small towns, never to return.

All four of the players know this, and not one of them is cut out for the 21st century. The romantic notion of going down in a blaze of glory is inexplicably tied to the relief of not having to confront the mystery of the future.

Hell or High Water confronts that notion head-on, exposing its falsity with surprising poignancy. A working knowledge of the history of cinema isn’t always necessary to understand and appreciate a movie, but it can help. Especially when the present is so heavily influenced by the past. In Hell or High Water, they’re practically the same.

estern saloons were created to serve certain kinds of customers: fur trappers, cowboys, lumberjacks, soldiers, miners, outlaws... folks who worked hard, even if outside the law. Those swinging doors would creak open and then came the clop, cling, clop, cling, clop, cling of boots and spurs against hardwood floors. Folks laughed and played games of chance, drank beer and liquor, and sometimes piano players would provide some entertainment.

North Dakota (pronounced like a “can-do” attitude, which is what I later discovered the town was actually named for). It looked like cornflowers painted on the cup, with gold lettering that said “Cando, N.D. 18841984.” For some reason, the mug made me ridiculously happy.

I ordered up a plate of vegetable hash. It’s a simple pleasure that reminds me a lot of my childhood in Western North Carolina.

Hashbrowns were always a staple breakfast food, and breakfast was always a staple meal at many a friend’s house because... well, to be honest, some of us weren’t all that wealthy.

Maybe the Jamestown Mercantile is the closest thing Boulder County’s got to a Western saloon. It is, for the record, the “home of the somewhat feral.” That screen door creaks open and then comes the clop, clop, clop of cycling shoes against hard wood.

Everybody’s there: friends sharing a late brunch, motorcyclists having a cold beer, cyclists refueling for the wild ride back down the mountain, farmers selling fresh picked vegetables. There’s music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. It’s the heart of Jamestown, a place where folks come from far and wide to sit a spell and let the magic of this mountain town ease their worries, just for a little bit.

I had no worries this weekend, to be honest. I’d gotten the chance to spend Saturday up in Loveland at the ARISE Festival and it felt like the only cure for a day of cold beer, hot sun, hula hoops and music was a hearty brunch at the Merc.

The day was hot and I prayed for the body and soul of every cyclist we passed who was slowly climbing their way up Lee Hill Drive. You are a dedicated, impressive, insane group of people. I salute you all.

But the day was a bit cooler up in Jamestown, where a local farmer and artist were set up in front of the Merc. I stopped to peruse the ceramics and veggies, but my need for a cup of the Merc’s Allegro coffee pulled me inside before long.

The Merc’s brunch menu is pretty simple, just two pages and about a dozen different offerings ranging from traditional breakfast plates to breakfast tacos to Benedicts to yogurt parfait. I’m a fan of a small menu. Focus on quality instead of quantity.

I won’t lie: what I wanted most was that piping hot cup of black coffee — and now just for the coffee. The Merc has a collection of eclectic mugs from all over, and when the server brought my coffee I saw it marked the centennial of Cando,

When our server brought us our food, she poured me a cup of coffee and said, “That cup just makes me so happy.” I laughed and told her I’d just been thinking the same thing.

Fueled by the coffee, I launched into my meal: potatoes hashed to perfection (when you get them just crunchy enough around the edges but still soft in the center), two eggs over easy, two slices of buttered wheat toast and a mix of sautéed spinach, mushrooms and sweet peppers.

Maybe it’s the surroundings — cyclists dropping in for a cool drink, friends laughing over double mimosas, locals selling goods outside, sunshine spilling on everything, hardwood floors — but it felt like I’d never had a more perfect meal on a more perfect Sunday. Hash is a simple, even modest meal, but I couldn’t have asked for anything better.

oulder is clearly a magnet for tourists.

Some come for the weather, the activities and the yoga pants. Others are clearly drawn by Boulder’s epic craft brew and recreational cannabis scene.

More are here for the food. Boulder has become a legit dining destination instead of a flyover. Think Frasca Food and Wine, The Kitchen. Black Cat Bistro, Blackbelly, Basta and other culinary hot spots helmed by highly regarded chefs.

The surprising ones visit Boulder in order to go grocery shopping for hours on end. Seriously, amateur and professional supermarket tourists are a real thing. I know because sometimes I’m the one leading them on tours.

It’s not a paying job. I just end up touring gaggles of foodies, food journalists and food industry folks who are here on vacation, for conventions or to simply do retail espionage for their own culinary enterprises.

It’s also one of the most competitive food retailing environments in the country with 17 local, Colorado and national supermarkets selling food and a lifestyle to a city of only about 105,000 residents.

There are three Whole Foods Market locations including Ideal Market and two Sprouts Farmers Market stores, Susan France and one store each for Trader Joe’s, Alfalfa’s Market, Natural Grocers/ Vitamin Cottage and Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market. You can choose from three Safeways and three King Soopers locations (if you include Gunbarrel). And Boulder now has two Lucky’s Market locations with the opening of a second store this week at Table Mesa Shopping Center.

Among the things I’ve learned is that King Soopers is generally cheaper than Safeway. Lucky’s is less expensive than Alfalfa’s, which is cheaper than the big dog, Whole Food Market. Price isn’t everything. Alfalfa’s doubles down on “local.”

Locally born Natural Grocers sells the fact that everything in the smallish stores is “safe” and they have the best supplement selection. Trader Joe’s stocks stuff nobody else has — cool foods you have to have but the quirky selection means you also have to shop at a regular grocery store.

Ironically, Alfalfa’s Market, which reopened in 2011, is now the only strictly locally owned supermarket in Boulder. Locally headquartered Lucky’s Market has expanded nationally with major investment from Kroger, the owner of King Soopers. We’ve seen this evolution before. Remember when White Wave, Izze Soda, Larabar and Justin’s Nut Butter were local? Remember Wild Oats!

Boulder’s food scene will only get more interesting. Other supermarkets such as ALDI will open in Boulder and environs eventually because, frankly, this is the place.

P.S.: According to recent university research you are in the slowest line at the grocery store if there is only one line. Studies determined that a single line leading to multiple registers does not Kim Long speed shoppers through as quickly as separate lines. The human factor wins out.

Cashiers work faster when they feel personally responsible for moving the line along.

Founded in 2008, the Upslope Brewing Company sports the motto, “Après everything.” Or simply put, “After everything else.” A French motto that proudly proclaims that after you’re done working/hiking/skiing, have a drink. That kind of advice is hard to turn down. Especially when it involves a fresh pint of snowmelt, malt, hops and yeast.

Located between the roar of U.S. 36 and the brightly painted condominiums of NoBo, Upslope’s Lee Hill Road location is on the smaller side, but packs plenty of options. The tasting room features the usual décor of polished concrete, stainless steel tables and large inteMichael J. Casey rior windows for a panorama view of the brewing side of business. But that business is not our business. Our business is drinking the stuff and Upslope offers fifteen different options on tap, all of which are displayed on chalkboards with the usual tasting notes.

Fifteen options is a lot to cull through, so Upslope breaks things down into two tasting flights — the year-round standards for $10, or a pick-your-own six-pack for $15. Familiar with their Pale Ale, IPA and the like, I forged my own road and was pleased to discover a German Pilsner (4.4% ABV) with the right balance of earthy sweetness. Pilsners are easy drinking beers that work wonderfully with hot summer weather, as does the Apricot Pale Ale (5.8%) with its hints of rosemary on the nose and crisp, fresh, clean taste in the mouth. My bartender agreed that the Apricot is one of their best, and suggested the Citra Pale Ale (6.7%), which matches the Apricot blow for blow, save for an extra dose of tropical fruit and toasted grain.

While quaffing away, a group of thirtysomethings garbed in khaki and hiking boots fresh from the Flatirons — or the office, it’s hard to tell in Boulder — gathered around a high-top and civilly discussed the upcoming election over pints. In the unlikely event that they ran out of things to talk about, they could have grabbed one of the many board games off the shelf and indulged in some good old fashioned hipster nostalgia. Anyone for a round of Sorry?

The beer is cold and the board games are plentiful, but no trip to Upslope is complete without a visit to their second taproom and production brewery in Flatiron Park. The tasting room is a bit bigger, and sports a large patio and some comfy IKEA loungers. But the real gem is the Ozo Coffee Company located next door that has inspired Upslope to produce their best beer yet, the Ozo Coffee Brown Ale (6.7%). Dark and rich with plenty of flavor, the brown ale packs a lot of coffee on the nose with nary a hint of a burnt bitter bean. Just the sort of thing for a quiet sit on the porch, a hand-wringing argument over political candidates or a board game. Sorry, anyone?

Schedule some time for an intimate dinner at home or cap off an exciting evening out on the town with romantic advances. If she does not respond to your improved efforts, then she’s not being a good teammate. A successful relationship is when both members’ needs are met, not just one.

Dear Dan: I’ve been hooking up with a good friend for about a year. We’re both single, and he lives in another state but comes to town for work every month or two, and we usually hang out and have really great sex when he’s here. One of the things I’ve always admired about him is his eco-conscious lifestyle... which includes showering only about once a week to save water. Currently, reduced consumption, but the reality of half of U.S. states have some form of the situation is far more convoluted legal medical markets and another

four have legislation in the works.

It appears that adults residing in or near legal markets are more likely to use cannabis. According to the Gallup poll, residents in the West, where all of the legal, adult-use markets are located, are much more likely to say they consume marijuana than in other parts of the country.

But just as important as the states that have been successful in passing cannabis legislation, are those that considered initiatives that ultimately failed.

Whether they make it or not, these ballot initiatives introduce a new rhetoric into congressional floors and into the public dialogue. As the conversation becomes less taboo, elected officials and citizens reckon with their own attitudes and opinions of the plant and, because of prohibition, probably for the first time.

The legalization chatter isn’t just relegated to the state level — four presidential candidates, Democratic, Republican, Green Party and Libertarian — have all expressed their support for federal legalization, albeit in varying degrees. International governments are also hosting their own considerations of drug law reform that represent a significant change in approach to legalization of cannabis consumption that favors decriminalization and education in an effort to foster a healthbased approach.

Whether or not people use cannabis, support for legalization is increasing across the board. A Center for Public Affairs Research poll released in March finds that 61 percent of adults support

legalization, the highest reported number to date. With the vast majority of Americans in favor of reform, the days of prohibition are likely numbered.

Because the early footings of legal cannabis market were achieved through campaigns that sought to regulate cannabis like alcohol, it is interesting to track changing attitudes about alcohol in step with those on cannabis.

According to a 2014 survey from the National Institute of Health, 87 percent of adults report that they have drank alcohol at some point in their lives and 71 percent drank in the last year. According to a 2015 Gallup poll, one in five U.S. adults say moderate drinking is healthy, while 28 percent perceive moderate drinking as bad for health.

The main difference is that while negative perceptions about alcohol are based in evidence of alcohol related accidents, deaths and illnesses, negative perceptions of cannabis do not stem from any such data. Instead, they are largely rooted in fears, misunderstanding and misinformation.

Cannabis prohibition, just like alcohol prohibition, succeeded in one respect — both significantly reduced the amount of consumption of the banned substance, on paper. Each state has different goals for their legalization efforts, but for the most part they share the directive to make consumption safer and more responsible, while minimizing the harmful effects of criminalization.

A

ccording to a story in the Orange County Register, today’s marijuana “is typically four times stronger than the marijuana of just a couple of decades ago.”

Reporter Brooke Edwards Staggs quotes Madeline Meier, a psychologist at Arizona State University, as saying that through the 1990s marijuana typically had about 4 percent THC, but that today’s pot commonly has 15 percent, 20 percent, even 30 percent THC. “That definitely increases the potential for addiction,” chimes in Kevin Alexander, who runs an after-school anti-drug program in Newport Beach.

Like, yikes.

Look. I have seen this movie before. It’s called “This Is Not Your Father’s Pot,” and it is revived by marijuana prohibitionists whenever the question of marijuana legalization starts to get some traction.

I first saw it in the early 1980s when it was rolled out by William Bennett, Reagan’s first drug czar. The narrative always contains the same false premises and dodgy data.

Only the dates change.

Ms. Meier doesn’t bother telling us where she got her numbers, but chances are they came from a study published in the January 19 issue of the Journal of Biological Psychology.

The study looked at more than 38,600 samples of illegal marijuana seized by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) over a 20-year period. It found that the THC in the samples had risen from about 4 percent in 1995 to about 12 percent in 2014.

The study was done at the University of Mississippi, which runs an on-going marijuana Potency Monitoring Program, funded by the National Institute of Drug Abuse. And which from time to time puts out reports that show that the potency of marijuana seized by the Drug Enforcement Administration has gone way up over

The awesome potency of today’s pot the last 10 or 20 years. Which then prompt the DEA, pot prohibitionists and reporters to start hyper-ventilating over why today’s marijuana is so much more powerful (and by implication, dangerous) than the marijuana of the past and why, therefore, marijuana should remain illegal.

The quality of these studies, especially the early ones, has sometimes risen (or sunk) to the level of junk science. For example, some of the first ones, conducted in the 1980s, analyzed samples of marijuana bales that had been seized in the 1970s and had been sitting in a hallway degrading for years before their THC content was measured. Lo and behold, the average strength of the THC from 1970s’ dope

tested in the 1980s was as low as 0.4 percent, which made the 4.0 percent THC content of samples seized in the early ’80s look like a ten-fold increase.

However, the latest study differs from those in the past in one important respect.

Its main premise — that today’s marijuana is a lot stronger than the marijuana of 20 years ago — is self-evidently true, regardless of the quality of the study.

It was hardly necessary to analyze 38,600 samples of pot to establish this. Just guessing here, but chances are the average strength of the pot currently sold at recreational dispensaries in Boulder County is closer to 20 percent than 12 percent.

(The study’s assertion that the average THC content of 1990s’ pot was 4 percent strikes me as bogus. There was always plenty of high strength marijuana available in the 1990s, and the 1980s as well. It was sometimes called Lawyers’ dope. It may be that the DEA just didn’t seize much of it, for some reason.)

The real question when dealing with the “this is not your father’s pot” trope is not whether 2016 pot is stronger than 1996 pot or 1986 pot or 1976 pot or 1960s pot.

The real question is “so what?”

The fact that some pot has a, say, 9 percent THC content and some has a 25 percent THC content is no different than the fact that some booze has a 5 percent alcohol content (we call it “beer”), some has a 15 percent alcohol content (it’s called “wine”) and some has a 40 percent alcohol content, (aka Scotch).

Most drinkers — usually as a result of a few embarrassing experiences early on — figure out that the three have to be consumed differently.

It is the same with marijuana users.

Indeed, the only people who seem to have trouble with the concept are newspaper reporters who keep falling for the This-Is-Not-Your-Father’s-Pot canard.

THAT BRUCE BENSON IS ONE BRAVE GUY So how do we know that Bruce Benson is brave? Because he just won the Courage in Education Award from the Steamboat Institute.

We were pretty excited over here at BW trying to guess exactly what Bruce had done to get his award. Did he pull students out of a burning dorm room?

Did he do CPR or use the Heimlich on somebody? Did he jump in front of that bus with the buffalo on it to push some unsuspecting pedestrian out of the way at the last second? Nope, nope and nope.

It seems that Bruce has been declared the bravest man in education this year because he — according to the Steamboat Institute — “has made huge strides in advancing conservative thought and policy,” and “encouraging intellectual diversity and free speech” and not “caving to the pressures of ‘political correctness.’”

Holy crap, are you kidding me? It sounds like a Donald Trump rally. If you stood on top of the Dalton Trumbo Free Speech Fountain and said Bruce Benson was brave, the damn thing would split in half and the sky would grow dark.

Bruce Benson is an oil and gas gazillionaire and Republican Party political operative. The man was responsible for creating the largest Republican 527 in the state. That’s a tax-exempt organization that gets around all the laws about buying elections in order to buy elections.

Not only that, Benson has stood around watching as more than one of his school’s professors has been fired for things they’ve said. Free speech my ass.

And when students wanted to express their right to free speech on April 20, he actually sent in riot police, drenched the quad in fish guts and closed the whole stinking university just to quash “non-conservative” opinion, aka free speech. He has helped turn the Leeds School of Business into a Republican Party/oil and gas industry PR firm. And under his watch, the CU Foundation’s managers spend more time studying the Koch brother’s game-plan than they do furthering the real goals of higher education.

That’s not bravery, Mr. Benson.

But the Steamboat Institute wasn’t completely wrong. You do deserve the award for being the nation’s most conservative university president — conservative as in you are a Koch acolyte committed to using the university system to further you own Republican and oil and gas agenda. That part of the award you deserve. Just don’t call it courage. That insults everything a university stands for.
