Among Ward Churchill’s trademarks (snide remarks, long-winded pontification, deceit, pompous jargon, etc.) is his delight in guilt-tripping white liberals, the core element of his own political constituency. His July 1, 2010, Boulder Weekly essay (“The opposite of everything is true,” cover story) purports to quote Kwame Ture (Stokeley Carmichael). Churchill, however, often attributes his own words to others, usually people of color, thereby allowing him to speak for those to whom he has no ties. (The tactic is called “fabrication.”) He infers his perpetual use of sunglasses protects his eyes from the glare of white skin, which — if true — suggests he wears them during his morning shave. His genealogy only shows white ancestry (he wears shades to hide his European features). He derides Boulder for its white population, but he’s lived there by choice for 34 years and assumes no one sees the irony and hypocrisy of his critique. A better caption for his essay would have been, “The opposite of everything Churchill writes about himself is true.”

Well, bark the war’s supporters, what would you do in Afghanistan?

Nothing. Instead, I would do something honest in Washington: Pass legislation to re-instate the draft, with no deferments for the sons and daughters of privilege. If a war truly is worth fighting, then everyone should get a shot at it. Either the whole nation goes to war — or no one does.

Whether Republican or Democrat, those who insist that Afghanistan is worth the blood and treasure America is spending there should put their conviction to a real test: Let their loved ones be at risk.

of being knowledgeable enough about health to be healthy. I am hopefully less likely to die a violent death, and so on. Indeed, I have a privileged life. I have had opportunities, and I took them. So sue me for not feeling guilty.

How is it that since I have this life, I should consequently consider myself racist? I don’t get it. According to your logic, we should every one of us bear unimaginable shame due to the reprehensible actions of others who are of the same skin tone. By that logic all black people should identify with their genocidal brethren in Africa. I guess if you have a white mother and a black father, you are either exempt as the sins sort of cancel one another out, or else you are doubly burdened, or maybe it’s watered down to half of each.

Oh, wait! My trauma is not “collective”; therefore, it does not count. I am racist by inference, and the people who demeaned me were just reacting to pre-existing conditions that I am guilty of by association. Or something.

So now you undoubtedly think I am defending my “ego,” whatever that is. Another ill-defined and populist concept with absolutely no constructive purpose to its use.

The logic in this “white guilt” article is shamefully flawed. It’s just more blame on the white guy who, by the way, is also responsible for inventing miraculous devices, creating millions of jobs here and elsewhere and providing an infrastructure that is the envy of the world and precisely why people want to live here.

The white guy is under attack.

Washington, Jefferson and that noble group of white guys are going down.

The society they envisioned is being destroyed. It failed. There are those who will dance on its grave, but I sincerely hope for your future and for our children’s sake that what replaces it is a decent and civilized place where all can prosper. Articles like this make me shudder and fear the worst. It’s just more white-bashing trash talk. If you are going to foster a dialogue, make it a constructive one.

Bukowski and the Beats (“Re: Charles Bukowski uncovered,” Arts & Culture, July 1.) I had a bit of a giggle at Adam Perry’s article, wherein he ponders the separation between Naropa and the Beats on one hand, and Charles Bukowski on the other.

Embarrassingly enough, I had never heard of Bukowski — an American — until first visiting Germany in 1976. The young people there were completely taken with him, 6 July 8, 2010

and I devoured his books like sauerbraten. When I moved to Boulder in 1982, I was invited out to drinks at Juanita’s by a group of Naropa students and faculty, back when the “campus” was the space above the now Boulder Book Store. I was seated next to Reed Bye, and as the conversation went on I eagerly asked if he had read with Charles Bukowski.

Bye turned to me and did one of those vaudevillian fake-puking things, as if throwing up into my lap. In fact, he did manage to drool out some of his nachos onto my jeans. The next 20 minutes or so of conversation was a real slam-fest of negativity, as each Naropa denizen voiced a variation on what a fraud, what a drunk, what an impossible man Bukowski was: “He wants you to call him Hank!” was voiced with the sort of horror one reserves for finding half a rat in one’s tofu salad.

The Ginsberg Beats have never wanted anything whatever to do with Bukowski, possibly because he sweats and is uncouth, if my memory of that evening serves. One thing Bukowski most definitely was not was socially delicate, but novels like Hollywood reveal him to be a compassionate observer of the human condition on par with any Buddhist. This, I think, creates trouble in mind for a lot of the more self-important champions of that period of modern literature, e.g., how can this brawling, bloody, smelly, combative, loving individual fit into our world view? Darn right there’s a conscious decision to not let Hank be part of the club!

In God they trust The Boulder Daily Camera and the Denver Post ran an advertisement today ( July 4, 2010) featuring George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and Ronald Reagan, who are ascribed quotes supposedly supporting the concept that the United States was created by and can only survive with god’s help (sic). Of course, if one reads the fine print one can only assume that the god referred to in this advertisement is whichever one is believed in by the advertising department at Hobby Lobby and Mardel Stores of Oklahoma City, Okla., since they, not one of the many god’s worshiped by various members of the population of this great country, are the ones who paid for this ad.

Just doing our job

f the Congressional candidate had not sent us the press release, we probably wouldn’t have learned about the police report, and he probably wouldn’t have suspended his campaign.

This is a story about looking under the surface of things.

Bob Brancato, a Republican vying to unseat U.S. Rep. Jared Polis, sent us a press release several weeks ago proudly announcing the fact that former Congressman Tom Tancredo had endorsed him. In the release, Brancato talked about his support for Arizona’s new anti-immigration law, which some say encourages racial profiling.

On June 3, in our weekly snide commentary In Case You Missed It, we poked fun at Brancato for trumpeting — to voters in a predominantly Democratic district — that he had received the blessing of one of Colorado’s most notorious and extreme right-wingers. We also questioned his support of the Arizona law, not to mention his poor grammar and spelling.

Well, Brancato didn’t appreciate our intimation that he was a racial profiler, so he called us on it. A private investigator by trade, Brancato found our office and sat down to chat, in an effort to change our opinion of him.

Somewhat surprisingly, for a disgruntled reader, the Firestone resident was genuinely nice, open and honest about his concerns, and himself. We were impressed.

He said he wanted us to see him as a person, not a press release.

Not your typical Republican, either.

He’s a medical marijuana supporter, because his dad died of cancer, and pot was the only thing that helped his father cope with the pain. In fact, Brancato was taking a tour of the Boulder Kind Care dispensary that week.

He explained that he supports the Arizona law primarily because he is concerned about human trafficking issues, which we could understand.

He told us he was a victim of sexual assault by a priest, something that’s not easy for anybody — especially men, it seems — to acknowledge publicly.

Oh, and he volunteers for a suicideprevention organization.

OK, now we were starting to feel guilty about taking aim at him based solely on a press release.

After our meeting, we were poised to run a follow-up ICUMI item singing his praises — or at least saying he wasn’t such a bad guy after all.

Then I read an e-mail that had been sent to us by an anonymous source, urging us to dig into his past. The person aired a laundry list of complaints about Brancato ranging from a possibly misleading statement on his website to personal information about his family to a recent arrest after a domestic disturbance at his house.

I copied the message — not including the e-mail address — and sent it to Brancato to give him the opportunity to respond. He called me, and after discussing the claims with him, I determined that all — with the possible exception of the domestic disturbance — were either see DOING OUR JOB Page 8

dismissible or private matters that weren’t worth reporting.

So I pressed him on the domestic disturbance. I asked him to tell me about any times the police had been to his house, any times he had been cited for a legal infraction of any kind. He mentioned a few fairly innocuous incidents, including a disorderly conduct charge in Wisconsin at a New Year’s party.

I could have trusted him at his word, especially after he had been so candid with us during our meeting.

But I decided to do some due diligence and found a Firestone police report that described a Sept. 29, 2009, incident in which the cops were called to Brancato’s house on a report of a domestic disturbance. He was arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment, a charge that he and his wife say was never pursued.

Still, he had not been exactly forthcoming with me.

And I guess that is understandable.

When you are running for Congress, you don’t want information like that to get out.

But I was torn. If, indeed, no charges had been filed, should I still write about what was in that police report? If it had been your average citizen, not a public figure, probably not.

But in this case, we decided that,

when people run for a public office as lofty as a Congressional delegate, they open themselves up to extreme scrutiny.

When I was interviewing Brancato and his wife so that I could include their side of the story, they told me that if I were to write about this incident, they would have to end the campaign for Congress, perhaps even leave the state.

That weighed heavily on me, and I checked myself, to make sure I wasn’t writing the story out of spite because he had been dishonest with me.

No, I was writing the story because it was newsworthy and we would have done the same with any Congressional candidate, Democrat or Republican.

Still, in his statement suspending his campaign, Brancato blamed the “liberal media” and claimed that we were jeopardizing his family’s privacy and safety.

But I feel that we did the right thing by withholding the most private information we uncovered but printing an account that included their explanation.

Even a prominent Republican friend of mine said that if we hadn’t printed something about the incident, someone else would have.

The lesson, re-learned, is to not take anything — a press release or a politician’s word — at face value.

tent, as most religions think their god or gods are, why does she or they, need your feeble efforts to spread her word?

Why would your god want Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, adulterers both, to represent her to the American people?

Why did the framers, who include everyone in this ad but Reagan (I know he was old, but not that old), prohibit a religious test in the U.S. Constitution or enact the First Amendment prohibiting the establishment of a national religion?

Ben Franklin supposedly said “…a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his (her/its?) notice…” implying that god is basically aware and in control of everything going on. If that is the case I would suggest that god, whichever one(s) you think may be actually watching over us, has really turned things into a “dog’s breakfast.”

Katrina, BP oil spill, global climate change, Iraq, Afghanistan, most of Africa, crime, poverty, intolerance, the NRA, the Republican Party, Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, the Tea Party, George W. Bush … Well, I could go on, but you get the point. Why would you want to leave this evidently capricious entity in charge?

Back to point one: If this god were really interested in getting her message, out I doubt she would have to enlist Hobby Lobby (or rely on pedophiles or anyone else for that matter). In Genesis and Exodus, god was supposedly smiting non-believers and innocents alike for a variety of transgressions and punishing whole populations (remember the plagues for the Egyptians and the 40 years in the desert for the Jews, not to mention the obliteration of Sodom and Gomorrah) with seemingly reckless abandon, and I suspect, a bit of schadenfreude. So whether she would want to start indiscriminate smiting or just run a huge “sky billboard” outlining her points, or just take a direct route and make us all believe in her, she really shouldn’t need your (Hobby Lobby) help in recruiting, should she?

Whether you choose to believe in a god or gods is your choice, however, the framers had a specific thought in mind when the First Amendment was crafted.

It was to ensure the separation of church and state was codified. We can see what happens when that doesn’t occur in the excesses of the Inquisition, the Taliban, al Qaeda, Iran and the growing intolerance of the religious right in this country. If you still think you want god running things, think about what would happen if someone else’s god were the “true god” and was put in charge. What Would Siva Do (WWSD)?

over Erie on our Historical Old Town Erie Tour, which led our 120 thirdgrade students from Black Rock Elementary School on a great historical journey. The children’s emotions were high as they enjoyed the “mountain man’s” stories and questions he asked them about the historical sites. All 120 students, in addition to the Old Town Tour, enjoyed a visit with Sara Wise at the Wise Homestead Museum.

Recently sadness, disappointment and raised emotions hit fellow historian John Garcia, many other Erie residents and me after discovering that someone had used a crowbar to confis-

cate four of our new “Old Town Erie Historical Sites” plaques off the old buildings, including the Catholic and Methodist churches and both buildings in the 1800s mercantile complex.

She’s getting updates on her patients via e-mail and is interested in their progress, how they’re living with their new limbs.

Porter says she wished she could have connected more with her patients, but that the language barrier was difficult to overcome in such a short period of time. The Hanger team worked through interpreters, but that didn’t stop them from being inspired by their patients’ stories — and by their sheer will to walk again.

When asked about the patients who inspired her, Porter pulls up a video of a woman in a white T-shirt and pink Nikes. Her name is Mitha. She’s standing on what could only loosely be called a road, leaning on two walking sticks. Extending from her thigh to her pink sneakers are prosthetic legs, metal rods hinged at the knee, the medical fix for a devastating injury resulting from the quake.

“She lost both legs above the knee,” says Porter.

“She lost one leg, and they were trying to save the other. They fought it and fought it, but she ended up being a bilateral above-the-knee amputee.”

In the video, Mitha looks into the camera and takes a tentative step. And then another. She moves deftly for someone who’s only been an amputee for a few months. More importantly, Mitha smiles the entire time.

Porter marvels at the video, at the progress Mitha had shown in such a short period of time.

“We always start people with very simplistic technology and see how they’ll do,” says Porter.

Within a matter of months, Mitha was walking half a mile at a time on her new legs.

“You can never anticipate how someone’s going to respond,” says Porter. “Are they going to lower their activity level, or are they going to continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible?”

“I would say in the case of Mitha, she just continued to push boundaries, and it was just so powerful, her spirit and her will.”

Porter hopes that, eventually, Mitha can come to the United States to be outfitted with even more advanced prostheses to enable her patient to further push the limits of her injury, to have the will to work against the impossible.

It takes a special patient to work against seemingly impossible odds. And it takes a dedicated clinician to bring them the gift of mobility. For Stephanie Porter, it’s part of the job.

Chamber opposes ‘Big Bad 3’ The Boulder Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has voted to formally oppose three tax and government financing measures on the November ballot.

The board says Amendments 60 & 61 and Proposition 101 would hinder state and local governments in providing services critical for a healthy economy and to attract and retain businesses.

“These three measures are very extreme and harm the ability of our state and local governments to function in a normal way,” says Chamber Board Chair Eric Long. “May I ask, who will then repair our highways so we conduct business?”

In general, Amendment 60 removes and reduces property taxes, Amendment 61 prohibits or strictly limits borrowing by the government, and Proposition 101 eliminates or reduces various state fees and taxes.

The City of Boulder projects at least a $20 million budget reduction in January 2011 if the measures pass. The Chamber’s Board said in a news release that while it understands the intent and spirit of the measures is to reduce taxes and create a smaller, more efficient government, the “draconian” manner in which they would be implemented would be more harmful than helpful to the Boulder area and state economy.

Organizations such as the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, the Colorado Competitive Council, the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce and the Colorado Association of Commerce and Industry are calling the measures “the big bad three” that will “crush Colorado’s economy.” For more information, visit www.donthurtcolorado. com.

‘Little Rock 9’ member to speak Carlotta LaNier, one of the “Little Rock Nine,” will speak and sign copies of her book, Mighty Long Way: My Journey to Justice at Little Rock Central High School, on Aug. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the Boulder Book Store.

In 1957, LaNier was one of the nine students to attend the previously all-white Little Rock Central High School in Arkansas under U.S. military guard. Just three years after the U.S. Supreme Court ordered the desegregation of the nation’s schools via Brown vs. Board of Education, the students were the first AfricanAmericans to graduate from an overwhelmingly white school.

LaNier had not written about the events that unfolded during her high Boulder Weekly

school years until her memoir, which is due out in paperback on July 27.

LaNier moved with her family to Colorado in 1962, where she graduated from what is now the University of Northern Colorado. She has two grown children and currently lives with her husband in Englewood.

Try a kids triathlon The City of Lafayette Recreation Department will host a “try”athlon for kids ages 6 to 11 at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 9, at the LaMont Does Park Pavilion at 500 S. Boulder Rd. County hosts workshops on falling Boulder County Aging Services began offering a national fall-prevention program this week called “A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls.”

The workshops are being held at various locations throughout the county and are designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels for older adults. No fees are charged for those 60 and older, but donations are appreciated. Workshops are being held through October.

Lyons gets a new mural Motorists, cyclists and residents traveling along either U.S. 36 or U.S. 7 may notice a new outdoor work of art in Lyons, thanks to the owners of the newly refurbished St. Vrain Market.

This spring, the market’s new owners, Neil and Connie Sullivan, commissioned muralist Jake Pinello to transform the outdoor west wall of the market into a scenic eastward view of Lyons’ landscape.

Pinello had approached the Sullivans about completing a longtime dream of featuring his muralwork on the wall of the market.

“This wall has spoken to me for a lot of years,” says Pinello. “And when the opportunity arose with the market’s new owners, everything fell into place for creating a fresh new mural to be enjoyed from the outside of the market in.”

The mural is on schedule to be completed in July.

Hey, the Longmont-based Colorado Reptile Humane Society is running out of certain materials and is putting out a call for donations.

The list of needed supplies includes the usual suspects, like paper towels, copy paper and envelopes.

But when we got to the item “regular oatmeal,” that was a stumper. Is that for the staff or the inmates? Absorbent cage liner? We heard that if you feed that stuff to ants, it expands and they explode.

And 46-gallon trash bags? We couldn’t help picture the death of one Boulder Weekly

of those giant komodo dragons, and how one might dispose of the body.

They also need plastic water bowls, hand gardening tools and gift cards for gasoline.

So we called them up, and as it turns out, the oatmeal is used as bedding for worms (reptile food), the garbage bags are used as bed liners, the gas cards are used to get the critters to DIA when they are shipped to out-ofstate adopters, and the gardening tools are used for growing many of the plants and veggies eaten by our scaley friends.

Columbian authorities at the Bogota airport seized a replica of the World Cup trophy made entirely of cocaine on July 3, media outlets reported.

The trophy was boxed up with some soccer jerseys and bound for Madrid. The cocaine was mixed with acetone or gasoline to make it moldable.

Seems the poor quality of the paint is what tipped off police. And Columbian law enforcement officers call themselves soccer fans. True “futbol” aficionados should have also noticed that it weighed too much, at 24 pounds.

What collateral damage looks like On Tuesday, Private Bradley Manning, an Army intelligence analyst, was formally charged under U.S. military law for allegedly leaking a video to Wikileaks.org that shows personnel in a U.S. military helicopter callously killing a group of 12 people, including two employees of the Reuters news service.

Manning also stands accused of leaking an estimated 150,000 diplomatic cables.

Private Manning now faces the military’s equivalent of a grand jury. He has been charged with four counts of violating Article 92 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, for disobeying orders or regulations, and eight counts of violating Article 134, a general charge for misconduct for violating federal laws against giving away classified information.

We’re not sure about the diplomatic cables, but releasing the video was a heroic act. It gave everyday Americans a close-up look at “collateral damage” — how ugly it really is, how easily it happens, and how little some military personnel seem to care that the bullets they’re firing might injure a child or an innocent bystander — or a journalist on assignment.

When will the military go on trial for its mistakes? Or is “collateral damage” the only form of murder for which no one is ever held accountable?

Not surprisingly, WikiLeaks, an organization that leaks embarrassing government documents from around the world and offers anonymity to those who provide them, is on an official Pentagon list of organizations considered to be a potential threat to the U.S. military.

Yeah, the truth is dangerous — particularly for those who work overtime to conceal it.

27 YEARS OF ACTIVISM Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center lays off staff, reinvents itself

In addition to Moore, the founders of what was originally called the Boulder Peace Center — and then the Rocky Mountain Peace Center — were Chet Tchozewski, Karen Gruber, Jeri Brown, Sally Dowiatt and Rich Stafford.

In October 1983, just as the fledgling center was setting up shop in rented space in the basement of what is now the Boulder Mennonite Church, the RMPJC engaged in a landmark protest at Rocky Flats known as the “encirclement.” About 17,000 people joined hands and successfully surrounded the

The group of protesters included six people who, a few years later, founded the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center, an organization that not only played a crucial role in shutting down the nuclear bomb factory but continues to play an advocacy role in everything from ending conflict in the Middle East to standing up for the homeless right here in Boulder.

But with the recent economic downturn, the center has fallen on hard times and has been forced to lay off its paid staff.

Ball calls Bari a brilliant strategist who would read books on labor history and civil rights movements to ascertain where she and her fellow activists were in their own efforts, and to plan their next steps.

“She knew on whose shoulders we were standing,” Ball recalls.

One thing Ball learned from her experience with Redwood Summer is that nonviolent activism can sometimes delay things — like logging — long enough to let the legal process work, until an injunction can be issued, for instance.

“Sometimes people fail to see the value of nonviolence, but that’s part of it,” she says. “And it makes the distinction very clear who’s doing the violence and who’s not. If we aren’t totally nonviolent and don’t stick to that no matter what’s happening, then it muddies the waters.”

Ball moved back to Boulder in 1997, a few months after Bari died of breast cancer.

One of her first projects upon her return was to deal with the tension-filled aftermath of riots on University Hill, leafleting houses in the area and hosting a pizza social under the Broadway bridge so that students and police could mingle and get to know each other.

“I have long considered the RMPJC to be one of the best resources for activism in the community,” says Sabrina Sideris, a local supporter of the center.

“Whenever something needs to be responded to, I would call Betty Ball before anyone else.”

Still, Ball doesn’t think her prospects of landing a new job are too promising.

“At the age of 68, I don’t think a lot of people are going to come clamoring to my door,” she says with a wistful smile. *** Carolyn Bninski, who until recently was a halftime RMPJC employee, was a neighborhood organizer in New York City before coming to Boulder in 1986 while working for the Nuclear Freeze campaign. That campaign’s offices were located next to the RMPJC’s, and the two organizations worked together on initiatives, which is what led Bninski to join the center as a paid staff member 10 years ago.

larger perspective, citing statistics on the current economic downturn and how philanthropic giving to organizations like the RMPJC is usually one of the first things people cut from their budgets when times are tough.

“It’s happening to groups like ours around the country,” says Bninski. “There’s a concentration of wealth at the top, the middle class is being decimated by these economic policies, and the only way that’s going to change is organized pressure on our lawmakers.”

It’s not just donations that the center needs, it’s volunteers. Now that there are no paid staff, volunteers are needed to do things that the employees did. Of course, it’s not just about answering phones and sending announcements to the 2,500 people on the center’s e-mail list. The RMPJC is organized into collectives that focus on topics ranging from international affairs to nukes to economic justice. Volunteers can choose to participate in the collective that best suits their interests.

“We’ve always had a huge amount of work done by volunteers,” Moore says, adding that people don’t become activists for the money. “It’s certainly a low-paid profession.”

But he emphasizes the importance of being able to pay “peace professionals” like Bninski and the Balls. (Gary Ball was a one-quarter-time employee who acted as the center’s bookkeeper.)

The center is overseen by a “spokescouncil” and has about 200 active volunteers. The RMPJC has been active on a variety of fronts both locally and globally, including single-

payer health care, the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, the Israel/ Palestian conflict, corporate personhood, local pesticide use and the BP oil spill.

Moore and Judith Mohling, who coordinates the center’s Nuclear Nexus Project, are still active in the clean-up at Rocky Flats and “nuclear guardianship,” which Moore describes as the need to take care of this dangerous man-made substance during its active life, which in some cases can be 250,000 years. Mohling says the RMPJC not only hosts local nuclearawareness events but belongs to the national Alliance for Nuclear Accountability and lobbies on the issue in Washington, D.C. She says the center has long stood for the concept of the “living wage,” and should be able to provide that to its professional staff.

But Ball says the reality of the situation was having to choose between providing the salaries and keeping the center’s doors open.

In the meantime, until the center’s fundraising levels recover, the RMPJC will continue its work on the backs of volunteers.

“Change doesn’t come by itself, it requires work,” Bninski says. “Change is possible, but it’s not going to come from the top. It’s up to the people to do it. People have to sacrifice a little bit. And it’s not going to happen just on the Internet.

“Our government will not represent us unless we keep the pressure on. They’re getting too much pressure from the elites in this country.”

Police investigate fatal accident The Boulder Police Department is investigating a fatal traffic accident that occurred at 28th Street and Iris Avenue on July 3 at about 11:50 p.m.

A 20-year-old motorcyclist was traveling westbound on Iris Avenue at 28th Street when he collided with a Dodge Intrepid that was turning from eastbound Iris to northbound 28th Street. The motorcyclist was transported to Boulder Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:28 a.m. The driver of the Intrepid was not injured.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to contact Sgt. Jack Walker at 303-441-4314.

Burned Barcalounger On July 1, Boulder police officers responded to 10th and College Streets on report of a Barcalounger recliner that had been set on fire.

The flames damaged a light pole nearby. There was no information about possible suspects, police said, and no witnesses to explain how the fire started.

Taser takes down traffic stroller While on patrol on June 27, a Boulder police officer noticed a man lying on the north sidewalk along Pearl Parkway, under the Foothills overpass.

As the officer approached to check the man’s welfare, the suspect stood up and began to stagger into oncoming traffic. According to police reports, the officer attempted to push him back to the sidewalk, and the suspect became verbally threatening and angry, flexing his arms.

The officer used a Taser on the suspect, who fell on the ground and hit his head on the pavement. He lost consciousness, sustaining a closed-head injury, and an ambulance was called to assist.

Suspicious bag halts justice On June 25, Boulder police officers were dispatched to assist the Boulder County Sheriff ’s Office after a suspicious bag was left outside the north wing of the Boulder County Justice Center at about 9:35 a.m.

The Boulder police locked down the Justice Center for approximately 50 minutes. Six courtrooms and the jury assembly room were evacuated as a precaution.

located the owner of the bag inside the building. He told police he left the bag outside because he was afraid of being late for court and didn’t want to take it through security.

There were no dangerous or illegal objects found in the bag, and he was not charged. About 15 law enforcement officers from both agencies were involved in resolving the situation.

Pearl Street flasher A juvenile male was arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct on June 26 in the area of 11th and Pearl Streets after he pulled down his pants in front of several females and a mother with her two-year-old daughter.

According to police reports, the suspect was uncooperative and yelling obscenities at officers, and several witnesses confirmed his behavior.

Prowler or Realtor?

On June 27 Boulder police officers responded to a report of a prowler at a woman’s residence in the 1800 block of Walnut Street.

The woman said she woke up and heard a noise outside her bedroom door, and when she opened it, a man was standing there. She called the police after she asked what he was doing and he responded, “Your Realtor sent me to check if the lights were off.”

Police found the suspect lying on a porch nearby, and the woman was able to positively identify him. The 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of second-degree burglary, theft and third-degree trespassing.

Missing woman found A 31-year-old female with severe medical problems and a history of depression left a residence in the 600 block of Sunshine Canyon on July 5 at approximately 9 p.m.

The Boulder County Sheriff ’s Office and other emergency crews responded and searched the area.

Approximately 90 minutes later, a resident in the area heard a woman yelling for help. Rocky Mountain Rescue group responded and was able to rescue the woman, who was identified as the missing victim. She was taken to Boulder Community Hospital for treatment.

hether you have a recyclables pick-up service or you use a collection center, there are probably still times when you wonder, “Where do I recycle this?”

Like that box of old paint cans, or out-of-date textbooks that not Charmaine Ortega Getz even thrift shops accept — hoping to put those things outdoors with a “free” sign?

How about that ugly utility sink or worn roofing shingles your contractor says he’ll dispose of in a landfill?

As for old computers and other electronic discards, sure, there are places now that will take them, but are their toxic innards actually being recycled safely by pros, or haphazardly by Third-World villagers?

If on the packaging of an item it says poison, toxic, corrosive, volatile, flammable, inflammable, combustible, explosive, danger, caution, warning or harmful, then it should not end up in a landfill where it will leach into the environment.

I think it’s just odd for me, feeling that the cohesiveness that we needed in the world at that moment turned out was a black candidate for president, not a songwriter, not somebody from the street, not a Martin Luther King, but a man running for office. We had been waiting, all of us, for something to happen. And we didn’t know what would rise from the rubble. Something had to. And people thought who was going to be writing this song, who’s going to bring things together, who’s going to give us a sense of identity again? And it turned out to be this man.”

The 2008 presidential election, of course, was historic in several ways, including the fact that an African American was elected to the highest office in the United States.

Baez says. “And the world, in a sense, will never be the same. Some things continue in their sad and miserable state. But everything shifted somewhat, and in a sense there’s something to be taken advantage of in that shift. For some people, it will always be that much of an advantage, that much better. For others, I think there’s just that much wiggle room to try and better things. And then for some, the hell kind of continues.

Maybe it’s up to the rest of us who have that much more wiggle room to try and work on behalf of those who still can’t wiggle.”

Aside from doing her part to better the lives of others, Baez has plenty of musical activities to keep her busy, beginning with a summer tour of the United States.

The shows will find Baez performing with her usual backing band of John Doyle (guitar/mandola), Dirk Powell (banjo, mandolin, accordion) and Todd Phillips (bass, mandolin), with her son, Gabe, joining in on percussion.

Baez is touring in support of her latest CD, Day After Tomorrow, which has received widespread acclaim as one of the finest CDs in a career that stretches back to the early 1960s.

Baez says there wasn’t much advance planning about what kind of album Day After Tomorrow would become.

“I don’t even know if we discussed it in those terms,” Baez says. “I think what we did was we just started singing.

There were two or three of them (songs) that we liked a lot.”

In the end, Baez recorded three songs by Earle (“God Is God,” “I Am A Wanderer” and “Jericho Road”), as well as songs from such contemporary tunesmiths as Eliza Gilkyson (“Rose Of Sharon”), Patty Griffin (“Mary) and Elvis Costello and T Bone Burnett (“Scarlet Tide”).

Baez says working with Earle was one of the main reasons she looks back at Day After Tomorrow as one of the most memorable album projects of her long career.

“It has to be Steve [Earle],” she said. “It has to [also] be the choice of songs, and I’m not really sure how that happens. We sensed it as it was happening. We sensed it. And I know a lot of it had to do with Steve. And then just his production and it’s the style and we worked the same way together — fast — his choice of the musicians and the decision that it was going to be as earthy as it was.”

According to conductor Simon Rattle, it’s “the future of music.” But don’t take his word for it: you can decide for yourself when the group fitting that description, the string trio Time for Three, appears with the Colorado Music Festival’s symphony orchestra today and tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. in Boulder’s Chautauqua Auditorium.

An ensemble of two violins and double bass, Time for Three — Tf3 for short — seem to be breaking all the rules of classical music right out of the starting gate. As a completely non-standard instrumental combination, they do not have a repertoire of music to play. They mix together anything and everything, from country-western to classical to gypsy. Like rock bands, they write and arrange everything they play. Like jazz combos, they improvise. And like garage bands everywhere, they do it mostly for fun.

The members of Tf3 — violinists Zach DePue and Nick Kendall and bassist Ranaan Meyer — met as students at the Curtis Institute of Music. Like lots of young musicians, they started playing together outside of their lessons, mingling various styles well beyond the regimen of classical studies. And there it might have stayed, just three guys who got together to jam, were it not for a power failure at Philadelphia’s Mann Center for the Performing Arts in 2003.

When lightning knocked out the power, technicians were summoned to restore the stage lighting.

DePue and Meyer, who were playing with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the time, were invited to entertain the audience — who had arrived expecting to hear a Beethoven symphony — until the lights came

back on. They obliged with a completely spontaneous jam session that included “Jerusalem’s Ridge,” “Ragtime Annie” and “Orange Blossom Special.” The crowd went wild, and Time for Three soon went on the road.

Fun it may be, but casual it is not, because these guys can definitely play. That classical training at the Curtis Institute paid off in the form of fierce technical abilities. Rattle added to his “future of music” comment by describing the group as “monsters of ability and technique. … Simply put, they’re a knockout.”

Audiences seem to agree. They have played at the Kennedy Center in Washington and at Joe’s Pub in New York; they have been soloists with the Philadelphia Orchestra and opened for k.d. lang.

They have appeared on NPR broadcasts and recorded the soundtrack for a History Channel special.

“We’ve been thrown into so many diverse situations that we’ve become chameleons,” violinist Nick Kendall says. “I don’t think there is any situation that we haven’t been able to do. We even played for an economics class at the University of Michigan.”

Happily, there will not be an economics class at the Colorado Music Festival, where Tf3 will play a piece they commissioned. Chris Brubeck’s “Travels in Time for Three” for the trio with orchestra is very much tailored to their individual personalities. Of all the pieces they play with orchestra, this is the one, Kendall says, that “represents us as a group the best. It’s such an amazing platform for us to have a great time.”

The music came out of a three-day jam session with the composer.

“We spent three days hanging out in the living room,” Kendall says. “Some of it was just talking about concepts, and then we’d take up our instruments. A lot of the material in the piece are elements that we jammed on [during those three days].”

The piece that Brubeck, the son of renowned jazz musician Dave Brubeck, wrote puts elements familiar to the group — country fiddling, an Irish medley, classical fugues — into a jazz context. Most is written out, but with players having the freedom to improvise around the written material, like jazz musicians playing from a lead sheet, or Baroque soloists embellishing a concerto.

“When we are playing the piece, we learn the notes on the page, and then we forget about what’s on the page and just play it from the heart,” Kendall says.

What does Kendall want the audience to know before they hear “Travels in Time for Three?”

“It allows everybody on stage to have a great time,” he says. “It’s more of a celebration piece, and what we’re doing is being virtuosos on our instruments, but in the context of a language that is part of American history: jazz. The harmonies are just so juicy and so yummy; it’s like candy to our ears. People react after each movement — they go crazy because it’s just fun.”

Nitty Gritty delivers with the Speed of Life

T

he members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band make up one of those musical ensembles that has always defied category. For hyphen-happy reviewers, there never seemed to be enough dashes to capture the band’s ever-evolving essence.

Together since 1966, one year they’d be “folk-rock,” the next, “country-folk-bluegrass.” These days, most have found it easiest to simply wrap the definitive Dirt Band style with the catch-all “roots music,” which seems appropriate for a band that has dipped into as many genres as it has generations of fans. Whether you know them from their heavily rotated 1970s smash hit, “Mr. Bojangles,” or the 1980s country chart-busters, “Modern Day Romance” and “Fishin’ in the Dark,” the Dirt Band has easily earned its esteemed position as a major shareholder of American music history. After many personnel changes over the years, today the core Dirt Band — a quartet now — features original founders Jeff Hanna (guitar) and Jimmie Fadden (drums), along with longtime alums John McEuen (banjo/mandolin, etc.) and Bob Carpenter (piano/keyboard).

“Doing Bonnaroo earlier this month was an amazing experience,” Hanna says. “Our set was between Hot Rize and Steve Martin. The festival mack daddies are Bonnaroo and Coachella. Nowadays you get people who are rabid music fans — it doesn’t matter if you’re bluegrass or folk or metal or hip-hop. I mean, Jay-Z and Stevie Wonder, Jeff Beck and John Fogerty, Kings of Leon and us. We all played the same festival. It had been a while since we played for that young of a crowd, and they seemed to know our music, which was encouraging.”

Band. Back in the late ’70s — under the name The Toot Uncommons — the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was Martin’s studio backup band for the recording of “King Tut.” More recently, multi-instrumentalist McEuen masterminded the production of Martin’s 2009 Grammy-winning bluegrass album The Crow.

“We were really tight back in the ’70s,” says Hanna of Martin. “He was our opening act for a couple of years on the road, and he had to quit opening for rock bands because it was a hostile audience. But it allowed him to really develop his thing, and at that point he became this massive comedy star.”

The Dirt Band was indie before indie was in, and these days, both next-generation fans and younger musicians are grabbing hold of the music after discovering the Dirt Band’s more understated innovations and pioneering achievements, which are now earning them their long-coming icon status. Among other things, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was one of the first to explore the concept of guest star compilations with its ground-breaking 1972 triple-album, Will the Circle Be Unbroken, which featured an all-star cast of mostly bluegrass stalwarts including Doc Watson, Vassar Clements, Mother Maybelle Carter, Roy Acuff, Earl

“There’s so much more of that now than there was in 1970 when we recorded that album,” says Hanna about the guest musician phenomenon. “You didn’t see a lot of people sitting in back then. Now, it’s kind of an everyday occurrence.”

But it still wasn’t an everyday occurrence in the late ’80s. So successful was the first effort that in 1989 the band released Will the Circle Be Unbroken: Volume Two, this time leaning harder toward country with Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Ricky Skaggs, Levon Helm, John Hiatt, John Prine and many others. Like its predecessor, Volume Two spun heads in the industry as the Dirt Band garnered some well-earned critical acclaim.

Twenty years later, the Dirt Band’s biggest change has been the collective experience of its members, and it really shows in the new album, Speed of Life — their first studio effort in five years. Guest musicians include Glenn Worf and Richard Bennett from Mark Knopfler’s band. And of the disc’s 13 songs, 11 of them are originals written by musicians performing on the record, while two are covers: jug-band-style renditions of Stealers Wheel’s “Stuck in the Middle” and Canned Heat’s “Going Up The Country.”

Produced by George Massenberg (who produced Little Feat, Emmylou Harris and others) and Jon Randall Stewart (of Nash Ramblers), the album was cut in Massenberg’s Blackbird Studio C, which was designed to capture the live performance sound. From the tight professional polish of what would be an otherwise loose jug-band sound, you can tell immediately that Massenberg demanded blood from these veteran musicians. The result? Classic Dirt, with four seasoned musicians running their country-folk-bluegrassrock roots through a filter of modern technology.

n this age of MTV’s Jersey Shore — or for that matter an age in which Pauly Shore still gets work in direct-to-video dreck like Adopted — a mockumentary about Shore trying to follow in Angelina Jolie’s footsteps by adopting an African child — we must circle the wagons around what’s left of true, classical culture. We must praise and protect the Vonneguts from the Dan Browns, the Mozarts from the Ke$shas and the Warhols from the taggers. For that reason alone, if you’ve never taken in a performance at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, this is the year that you should.

Whether raging against his daughters for their lack of filial piety, laughing carefree with his Fool or cowering in fear from nature’s might, Hutton makes Lear not just a credible king but a credible man. Even when not on stage, his Lear is a palpable presence that centers the entire production.

Many CSF directors choose to set Shakespeare in more modern times (think Romeo and Juliet by way of Grease).

The result is always interesting and usually succeeds in shaking some of the dust off of these well-worn tales, but I’ve never seen a better fit than taking King Lear and setting it in the Rocky Mountain West at the end of the 19th century. Lear, especially as played by Hutton, makes the perfect aging oil baron. Comparisons between this King Lear and 2007’s Oscar-winning There Will Be Blood are inevitable, and having seen both the movie and the play, I can say without equivocation that the play surpasses the movie by a long shot.

Daniel Day-Lewis is one of my favorite actors, but Hutton is his match as Lear. And though There Will Be Blood suffered whenever Day-Lewis was off screen, King Lear glides along even when Hutton is in the wings. Stephen Weitz, who played Hamlet formidably last season, absolutely dazzles as Lear’s Fool. Robert Sicular’s Kent, from banishment to bitter end, serves Lear with all his heart. And Geoffrey Kent’s evil Edmund is the kind of villain you just love to hate.

I have always been impressed by the quality of work done by the Colorado Shakespeare Festival.

With King Lear, the CSF has outdone even itself. I cannot recommend it strongly enough.

High-maintenance vaginas

y vagina is very highmaintenance. I mean, really, whose isn’t? A vagina needs grooming and cleaning, love and affection, touch and pleasure, and, of course, good vibrations.

Eve Ensler launched the Vagina Monologues 1996. This was such an asset to our society, except for the hiccup in proper anatomy. The vagina is the canal where babies come out and other pleasurable things can go in. However, a woman’s entire, and exquisite, genital region is correctly called the vulva. Inside, we have the G-spot as an extra-erogenous zone, and a number of juicy glands that produce lubrication at heightened periods of arousal. Outside, we have the queen clitoris and her protective hood.

We also have luscious inner and outer labia (or lips), a urethra for urinating, and the mons pubis, which can be shaved, waxed, or left alone to grow in full and furry — aka Woodstock — elegance.

The vulva is high-maintenance because she fancies numerous forms of stimulation. This can include partner penetration, tongue-play, and touch; or self-pleasure with sensational sex toys, various vegetables, detachable shower heads, or throbbing from the throttle of a motorcycle.

Unfortunately, the vulva often has to answer to a sex-negative social narrative.

She’s often asked: Will a vibrator make my nerve endings die? And, will I get addicted?

Of the 8,000 nerve endings that inhabit the clitoris, not a single one will die from vibrator use. Vibrator homicide is a myth. Yes, a myth. Like those prehistoric stories about Greek gods that were half horse and half human. Sure, we can get a little numb and sore, but so do our quads after hiking up Longs Peak … and so do our genitals after a long night of raucous sex. But our quads recover and can hike again, our genitals recover and have sex again, and our clits can recover and be open and excited for more — whether with a human or battery-powered partner.

That said, pleasuring all 8,000 nerve endings may require a powerful vibrator, or a patient lover!

As for addiction, this implies an inability to cease an activity such that the compulsive behavior destroys one’s life. Unless you are completely unable to leave your house Boulder Weekly

and function, such as going to work or feeding yourself, vibrator addiction is highly unlikely. If you still feel overly dependent on your vibe, put it aside and try out your shower head, a slow drip from the bathtub faucet, or the Victorian method, your index finger. But certainly do not feel afraid or ashamed to make best friends with your vibrator. Dr. Betty Dodson, mother of masturbation and author of Joy for One, asserts that using a vibrator is a great obsession to have. “It’s not fattening, not illegal, and not expensive.” Plus, it often makes you hornier for, and during, partner sex!

This is not to ignore that consistent vibrator use may cause the body to develop a “habituated response.” With any consistent sport training, the body is going to acclimate. Yet the well-trained marathon runner who is very efficient at running may struggle when attempting to use other muscle groups. Whether using a vibrator or always having sex in the same position, your body’s sexual response will habituate to the type of stimulation repeatedly provided.

Changing the routine can be good for your sex life — like the marathon runner who betters his race time by cross-training. With partner sex, change up positions, places and time of day. When going solo, try having a different vibrator for each day of the week. One can be a dildo you insert, another can be an external clit vibe, and another can be a combo of the two. Change your body position, as well as the speed of each toy if you are really interested in preventing a habituated response. And feel free to introduce your toy collection to partner sex.

Don’t worry, gentlemen, vibrators are not replacements for your lovely and long dongs. This is because you are more than your penis, and partner sex is more than genital manipulation. Sex is about connection and intimacy. Even if her battery-operated toy looks like Medusa with 24 speeds and 12 rotating heads, you are a human with a heart, soul and mind. Just remember, “real sex” is not about going bareback. It’s perfectly acceptable (and encouraged) to saddle up each time with condoms, lube and toys. Even if this feels like high-maintenance, the upkeep is well worth the ride.

ou’ve hiked Mount Sanitas and Chautauqua Park, but have you given Bear Peak in South Boulder your best shot? A lengthy, strenuous climb, Bear Peak is not for the endurance-deficient beginners of Mount Sanitas Valley or Chautauqua trails. At 8,461 feet, the mountain is the most prominent peak of Boulder’s foothills and one “bear” of a hike.

in your backpack. Other useful and necessary items to pack up the mountain with you include water, and lots of it, high-energy snacks like trail mix, granola bars and fruit, a hat to protect your face from weather elements and a light jacket to protect from unexpected Colorado thunderstorms.

Make sure your shoes have suitable traction to precent slipping while scampering along the trail. A signaling device like a shrill whistle and a basic first aid kit are also not a bad idea to have on the trail in case you get lost or get a blister.

nowing your mountain and treating the site with respect is an important part of the climbing experience.

All climbers should follow “Leave No Trace” principles, plus any rules specific to an area. In addition, climbers should consider the following climbing ethics before tackling a sheer face for rock climbing or heading out for some serious mountaineering: — Learn the location of the access point and a designated trail to the climbing area. Find out if the climbing site is on public or private land and where you can park a car. Get information from guidebooks, online sources, local climbing shops or other climbers.

— Find out the color of the rock. The rock color will influence the color chalk used during the climb. Unsightly chalk marks detract from the visual experience of the next user. Rock color will also influence the hue of clothes a climber wears and even ropes.

— Research whether site-specific guidelines exists for climbing free, using removable protection or leaving marks on rocks.

— Check for seasonal wildlife closures before departing for a site.

Some climbing areas close periodically to protect nesting birds or other local wildlife.

— Minimize the impact on vegetation at all times. Climbing can affect plants and soils at the bottom and top of a climb, and cliff-dwelling plants. Some areas possess sensitive vegetation, while others pose fewer concerns.

Teach your children to eat well

hat did you eat for breakfast this morning? Oatmeal, toast or eggs perhaps?

Now rewind several years to your childhood. What did you eat for breakfast then? Chances are, your response might be similar to that of your typical breakfast today. The same observation could be said about your entire diet, in fact.

Children’s food choices and practices are reflective of caregivers’ own diets and knowledge of nutrition. Numerous studies link parentchild feeding relationships to the development of an individual’s relationship with food. By teaching children healthy eating habits, a healthy weight and diet can be easily achieved and maintained. The eating habits children develop when they’re young will often help them maintain a healthy lifestyle as an adult.

Sue Van Raes, a nutritional therapist and life coach at Boulder Nutrition, says the most effective and important technique for teaching children healthy eating habits at a young age is modeling.

“Parents have to walk the talk,” Van Raes says.

She says that using food to reward or punish children is not necessarily the best tactic for teaching proper nutrition. Van Raes emphasizes that the language around food and meal rituals is equally as important as parent modeling.

“Do we make time to enjoy a meal, or is it always rushed?” she asks. “Are meals cooked at home or picked up from a restaurant? What conversations occur during the meal?”

The manner in which a family creates and eats a meal can affect adult eating habits. Providing a variety

of healthy food options in the house will allow children to learn how to make nutritious food choices in the future. Involving children in food shopping and meal preparing will generate a better understanding of nutrition and kitchen accomplishment.

Estee Culbreth, who visited Boulder over the Independence Day weekend, grew up in south Florida with balanced, home-cooked meals.

“I learned how to cook because I cooked with my Mom in the kitchen, growing up,” Culbreth says.

When she attended Emory University in Georgia, Culbreth says, she ate more junk food and drank more soda than she would at home because of its presence in the university cafeterias.

“The difference between me and other students was that I know how to cook, so I had the ability to go to the store, get raw ingredients and cook something, so I didn’t have to eat processed foods. The problem was

that cooking was time-consuming and, as a student, you don’t have a lot of time.”

Societal trends in the United States and other developed countries reflect that there is less time spent on food preparation and increased reliance on prepared foods and fast food. With the ample number of drive-through restaurants and packaged, ready-to-eat food in grocery stores, it is easy to see how convenience often overpowers nutrition.

Van Raes offers ongoing nutrition programs at Boulder Nutrition, where she holds lectures that examine diet, lifestyle and how food plays such an important foundational role in our lives. She says people can easily alter existing eating habits to conform to a better, nutritional diet through four simple

steps: • Create a basic foundation with a diet of whole foods, free from processed foods and sugars that could trigger cravings.

• Determine your metabolic type, because people digest food at different speeds. Van Raes says your mood and brain chemistry will shift accordingly once your unique metabolism is verified.

• Practice intuitive eating. Van Raes says once you learn what feels good in your body, you can determine what your body is craving, when you’re hungry and when you’re full. She says this step can be abused if you’re eating a diet that’s high in processed food, because your body will crave the food you’re consuming.

TIDBITES Food happenings around town Bigger brewery and birthday Twisted Pine has announced a 12 percent expansion of its brewery that includes a larger production area, an extended patio with a beer garden and a recently acquired grain silo.

The expansion comes after the company’s decision to begin out-ofstate distribution to Texas last fall. Now Twisted Pine beer can be found in Louisiana and Missouri as well, and future plans include distribution in Arizona and New Mexico.

“I’ve been getting requests to ship out-of-state for years,” say owner Bob Baile. “We felt after 15 years it was time to share our beer with the rest of the world.”

The grain silo will allow for delivery of bulk grain, and the increased production area will create space for more brewing vessels and a bottling line.

Twisted Pine also plans to release its 15th Anniversary Beer, Hoppy Knight India-style Black Ale, which will be tapped during its anniversary party on July 17 from noon to 8 p.m.

New flavor from New Planet Boulder-based New Planet Gluten Free Beer has released its second style of gluten-free Colorado craft beer, the 3R Raspberry Ale, for statewide distribution.

The brew is made from fermented sorghum and corn, natural raspberry puree, orange peel, hops and yeast, and, according to the brewery, the Oregongrown fruit puree creates a “beautiful body color with a natural raspberry flavor.” The beer has 160 calories and is 5 percent alcohol by volume.

New Planet Beer will donate a portion of proceeds from the sale of 3R Raspberry Ale to nonprofit organizations in Colorado that promote the “reduce, reuse and recycle” educational philosophy.

Kelly Hosner, a Boulder resident who enjoys a diet of fresh, live foods, says she eats for the pleasure and fun of meals. A vegetarian since the age of 8, Hosner says she grows sprouts, basil, lettuce, spinach, turtle beans and kim-chi, a fermented food, to supplement her diet.

Hosner says she ate a lot of fast food growing up until she joined a gymnastics program in high school that emphasized the importance of a healthy diet and its impact on performance.

“I started making my own meals and becoming more aware of different forms of protein as an energy provider,” Hosner 48 July 8, 2010

Growing her own vegetables and herbs for meals creates a relationship between Hosner and her food, a connection that is critical to a healthy diet, according to Van Raes.

“When you know the farmer who raised the chickens who produce the eggs you eat or the cow who produces the milk that you drink, you’ll be more excited to make your own fresh meals because you’re involved with your food,” she says.

Swing and a miss

ame Helen Mirren as a toughtalking Nevada brothel madam? We like to think our finest screen performers can play anyone. Mirren, whose career has encompassed the full spectrum of human behavior, from queens to gangster’s molls, is fully capable of tackling a character like the one in Love Ranch, co-starring Joe Pesci as her husband and partner in legalized flesh-peddling.

This specific character, however, is nearly unplayably false, as written by Mark Jacobson and directed by Taylor Hackford (Mirren’s husband). What could have been a juicy, pulpy noir, based loosely on the real-life 1976 Mustang Ranch love triangle involving Joe and Sally Conforte and Sally’s boxer paramour, instead has the dramatic consistency of rice milk.

It’s hard to fathom what Hackford had in mind half the time. Love Ranch begins as a comedy of bad manners, with Pesci chewing it up, spitting it out and chewing it up again as Charlie Bontempo, co-owner of the Love Ranch.

His latest get-rich-quick scheme involves the acquisition and training of an Argentine heavyweight,

Armando (played by Spanish actor Sergio PerisMencheta). For an hour, Mirren’s long-suffering Grace Bontempo has little to do beyond long-suffer in relative silence, issue an occasional reprimand to one of the “girls” (depicted with all the gritty realism of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas) and wonder if Charlie’s dalliances will ever end. Then comes the

noir part, when the boxer and the madam become professional associates, then personal ones, then runaways.

So it’s a boxing picture with hookers — how could that miss? Yet nothing in Love Ranch quite works, and only Mirren’s valiant efforts to convey something of this character’s inner life salvage bits and pieces of a protracted two-hour film. Charlie needs to be seductive and dangerous in roughly equal measure; the way Pesci lays into the threatened and actual violence, he’s a pain from moment one. There’s no surprise or discovery in the performance. Peris-Mencheta looks the part but struggles to humanize some pretty hoary clichés. Hackford tries a little of everything in terms of tone, but none of it sticks, and shooting the interiors with lighting as cruddy as Bucktown-era blaxploitation doesn’t add period flair. It adds cruddy light-

ing.

M. Night trips and falls in the dark

A

ccording to The Last Airbender — the latest 3-D offering in theaters, yet barely functional in 2-D or even 1-D — the world’s separate kingdoms are built around fire, air, water, earth and impenetrable, rock-hard exposition. Bringing those first four to the screen no doubt intrigued writer-director M. Night Shyamalan. But the fifth keeps messing him up, as he struggles to find a rhythm for the quest involving a young leader’s date with destiny.

This turns into a series of flashbacks and voice-over explanations regarding the Northern Water Tribe (“where they openly practice water bending”) or Prince Zuko, exiled son of the Fire Lord, who’s ... ... And I seem to be lost myself. I liked the original TV incarnation (Nickelodeon, 2005 through 2008), which was the first non-glib, non-obnoxious series to capture my preteen son’s interest. (It made up for all those installments of The Fairly OddParents.) Shot largely in Greenland, the film version tells the first part of the series’ story, in which Water Nation war orphans and siblings (Nicola Peltz and Jackson Rathbone) discover, frozen in ice, young Aang (Noah Ringer), the reincarnation of the Avatar, who can bend anything Boulder Weekly

and restore harmony to the warring factions while teaching the upstart Fire Nation a lesson in humility.

This is a world containing a flying furry bison and no shortage of battles waged by hurling fireballs and blasts of wind at your opponent. In one respect, Shyamalan was an intriguing choice to adapt and helm this project: He’s a grave soul, which means he’s in tune with the (relative) seriousness of the series.

Think back, though, to The Sixth Sense and Signs, films from the director’s pre-lost-mojo period.

Shyamalan’s storytelling strengths are all about quietude, indirect suspense and treating supernatural ele-

ments with everyday simplicity. The Last Airbender (they couldn’t use the series’ Avatar title because another film got there first, without all the bending) is more about marshaling extras and interpolating tons of computer-generated effects and keeping the factions straight. It’s a tough sit.

And the casting is peculiar: Already the subject of some Asian-American protests, the movie has made the good-guy Water Nation folks largely (and dully) Anglo, with Mediterranean and Indian and other swarthy-type performers portraying the bad-guy Fire Folk. (Dev Patel from Slumdog Millionaire plays Zuko, who’s at least conflicted about his role in world events.) You wouldn’t notice the color-coding if the movie had any storytelling zip or visual magic.

But not since Kyle MacLachlan’s whispered voiceovers about the worm and the spice and the worm IS the spice in Dune has a fantasy franchise tripped all over itself trying, simply, to please a fan base while creating a new one.

Excuse me, I need to sit down, catch my breath and extinguish my singed eyebrows. I’ve just experienced The A-Team, a highly combustible concoction of testosterone, napalm and gunpowder, seasoned with cheesy comedy and served flambe. In what feels like a tryout for the next Mission: Impossible directing job, Joe Carnahan has made the reboot of the 1980s TV series an excuse to blow up every vehicle, prop and backdrop in a four-mile radius. The film is a relentless, unapologetic, in-your-face barrage of special effects and virtuoso stunts that roars into action in the pre-credits prelude and rarely downshifts. The main benefit of basing The A-Team on a pre-existing series is that it comes partially assembled, with the character quirks already in place. That way we can get to the detonations faster. It is eight o’clock in the morning when Marta, biting a doughnut, is returning home after having slept at her aunt’s house. A truck stops. Mario, a mentally challenged local young man, convinces her to follow him to his farm. The alarm immediately goes off, as Marta is only 6 years old. Inspector Sanzio, an experienced policeman who recently moved to that remote area, comes to the town. His younger colleague Siboldi, native to those valleys, becomes his guide and helps him to know the family ties and relationships of that small community. The two of them, accompanied by Alfredo, Sanzio’s loyal colleague since his time in the homicide division, will have to stay in town because another crime is about to be committed — a crime probably connected to one of the families in the village, arising from a sentimental or emotional tie.

There is incomprehensible, and there is inexplicable, and then there is The Last Airbender, M. Night Shyamalan’s adaptation of the popular Nickelodeon cartoon “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” Not to be confused with James Cameron’s tale of tree-hugging blue people, this saga revolves around (I think) a war-torn future world waiting for a messiah to unite it. But the screenplay (also by Shyamalan) is cluttered with so much gobbledygook exposition and confusing action that it’s impossible to grasp what’s supposed to be going on for more than 15 seconds at a stretch. By the time the (mystifying) climax rolls around, the movie has come to resemble an unwieldy hybrid of Little Buddha and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
