Don’t blame older workers (Re: “Summer of our discontent,” cover story, July 21.) It is inflammatory, prejudiced and somewhat ridiculous to even insinuate that teens can’t find jobs because older people have taken them.

There are so many things wrong with this theory that I hardly know where to start.

First off, why not place the blame for the lack of jobs where it belongs, on the companies that aren’t hiring, or more to the point, on the corporations that have laid off millions of Americans and continue to cut corners at every turn in search of the Almighty Quarterly Profit? Corporate greed is the reason why our jobs have disappeared; stop looking for a scapegoat.

Second, older workers face far, far more discrimination in the workplace than young people do in a culture that is dominated by, and obsessed with, youth.

Having been downsized out of a job repeatedly in the past 10 years (twice because of corporate mergers), I’ve often interviewed at companies where no one seemed to be much over the age of 23 or so, and interviews are usually conducted by managers that look no older than my children. In one case, I easily outperformed all of the kids at the table with me in an editing test, but despite this, plus years of experience and a degree, I never even received an initial call back.

Was it because they couldn’t afford an older, experienced worker, an employment trend many economists have reported? Or, perhaps it was because I didn’t fit in with the corporate (youth) culture, or it was a little of both?

Third, while some teens might really need work to contribute to the family in these hard times, most are not faced with the reality of paying utilities, rent or mortgage, water, trash and groceries, as most older workers are. Rather, they want jobs to help cover the bills for their cell phones and i-Thingies, or to get a car. Important things, perhaps, but these are mostly what are called “luxury necessities” and do not rise to the level of “need.” Confusing “want” with “need” is a common mistake made by the young, including myself, when I was young and

he core economic problem we’re facing today is that both unemployment and underemployment are rampant, stifling any hope for real recovery and threatening the very survival of our essential middle class.

The solution? Our leaders in Washington and various state capitols are pushing a massive jobs program across America. Great, just what we need! Uh ... no.

Unfortunately, theirs is not a program to create jobs, but a coordinated effort with corporate front groups to eliminate hundreds of thousands of public service jobs, adding these workers to America’s jobless hordes. If ignorance is bliss, they must be ecstatic!

They’ve swallowed the right-wing mythology that prosperity will magically arise if only government budgets can be gutted and the jobs of public employees terminated. Yet, by going on a firing ramBoulder Weekly

had yet to be humbled by life into understanding the difference.

If your paper feels the need to blame someone for the lack of work for any group, put the blame where it belongs, on the companies, rather than singling out a scapegoat such as the older worker. Can you even imagine the uproar you would create if you ran an article stating that whites can’t find a job because they’re all taken by minorities and foreigners? Such jingoistic racism might play well with a certain segment of the readership, but it would

Not content to undercut middleclass consumers by firing them, extremist politicos are also slashing jobless payments, food stamps, Medicaid and other safety-net programs. These put money directly and quickly into the consumer economy as recipients spend for food, gas and other basics. Such cutbacks will drain some $37 billion more out of consumer spending this year.

As our economy keeps sliding backwards, the middle-class people who get knocked down will be hunting these laissez-fairyland ideologues with dogs.

First, the author assumes that Republicans are even interested in compromise. In paperwork they released in April discussing reducing the deficit, they put forward a plan in which 85 percent of savings would come from spending cuts and the rest from revenue increases. In true form, the GOP has now decided to hold this country’s bond rating hostage until spending cuts are substituted for the remaining revenue increases that they originally proposed.

Second, to suggest “swapping” the Bush tax cuts for “Obamacare” is nonsensical. On one side you have landmark legislation that makes it illegal for insurance companies to deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions, which the Congressional Budget Office estimates will save more than $1 trillion over 20 years. On the other side you have the Bush tax cuts, which have already cost more than $3 trillion in tax revenue and have not created jobs. In fact, the last administration saw the lowest overall percent increase in jobs since Herbert Hoover. Not only did these cuts fail, but they are set to expire in 2012. If Obama does nothing, these onerous tax cuts will

simply disappear.

Why would Democrats trade a signature piece of legislation in order to repeal tax cuts that are set to expire?

Answer: The author is either a Republican or an idiot and has adopted their definition of “compromise.”

To sum up my issue with each point: 1. “Obamacare” is set to save us more than $1 trillion. See above. 2. The Bush tax cuts are set to expire in two years. See above. 3. By virtue of basic math, Danish is suggesting that we extend these cuts for one year. See above. 4. In 1937, Congress and FDR tried massively cutting spending, and it nearly sent us right back into the Great Depression. 5. Raising the debt ceiling has happened 89 times since 1917, usually in a bipartisan manner, and should not require a compromise to begin with.

I challenge the author to show me why this “compromise” is anything but kowtowing to Republican obstructionism and doesn’t solve our debt crisis, but makes it worse, all the while throwing the most vulnerable see LETTERS Page 8

ome November, Boulder voters will be asked whether they want to throw the city’s franchise with Xcel Energy under the bus and set up a municipal electric utility in its place.

Voters will also be asked to double the city’s carbon tax (to 0.99 cent from 0.49 cent), mostly to pay the lawyers who will be handling the Boulder-Xcel divorce.

(Yeah, I know the “throwing under the bus” metaphor has been over-used to the point of nausea, but in this case it seems apt. That’s because until RTD took over bus service in the mid1970s, Xcel’s predecessor company, Public Service Co. of Colorado, operated Boulder’s local buses. But we digress.)

Municipal power, huh? Well I’ve been living in Longmont for the past five years where we have it, and I can’t say enough good things about it.

Longmont has had municipal power for 99 years, and we pay a lot less for our electricity than people in Boulder do. A 2010 survey conducted by the Colorado Association of Municipal Utilities found that Longmont had the lowest rates in Colorado for residential, large commercial and industrial electric service, and the second-lowest rates for small commercial service. Longmont’s residential rate is about 30 percent less than what Boulder residents pay to Xcel. Power to the people, I say.

Of course, municipal power in Boulder won’t be anything like that.

Boulder’s rates would be a lot higher than Longmont’s.

The reason Longmont’s rates are so low is not just because Longmont Power & Communications is a nonprofit corporation. It is because Longmont Power & Communications is a nonprofit corporation that gets 73 percent of the electricity it sells from coal-fired power plants. And most of the coal that goes into those plants — the big one is the Rawhide Energy Station, with 280 megawatts of coalfired capacity — comes from

Wyoming’s Powder River Basin, the cheapest coal in North America. As of July 11, Powder River Basin coal was selling for $14.60 a ton on the spot market. For comparison, West Virginia coal was selling for more than $78 a ton at the time.

Needless to say, we don’t have a carbon tax either.

(In addition to the 73 percent of Longmont’s power that comes from coal, the city gets 19.1 percent of its power from hydroelectric sources and another 2-plus percent from wind, which renewable-wise isn’t too shabby.)

A Boulder municipal utility won’t produce electricity from coal, of course.

The whole point of forming a Boulder municipal electric utility is to expedite the city’s transition to carbonless kilowatts. That rules out coal and all but locks in higher rates.

True, electricity produced with wind and solar energy is rapidly becoming more competitive in the overall electricity market, but it still costs more to produce than electricity produced with Powder River Basin Black. That isn’t about to change anytime soon — particularly when it comes to base-load power plants, those that supply power 24/7.

In the solar power business, the saddest words of tongue and pen are “night” and “batteries not included.”

(In the case of wind power, substitute “lulls and gales” for “night.”)

If wind and solar are to be used to supply base-load electricity, they have to be able to supply power when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing (or is blowing too hard). The obvious solution is an energy storage device — a battery or a tank of molten salt, in the case of solar thermal, for example — that can store energy produced when the sun shines or the wind blows, for use when they don’t. Such technologies are in development and will likely be both available and affordable within a decade. They will solve the “batteries not included” problem of solar and wind power, but another, see MUNICIPAL POWER Page 8

tougher problem will remain.

Good batteries may allow solar and wind plants to deliver power 24/7, but if a solar plant is to deliver as much power at night as it delivers during the day, it has to generate twice as much power during the day as it would if it were a daylight-only operation. That means a base-load solar plant has to have twice as many mirrors or photovoltaic panels and twice as much land as a plant that quits delivering power after sunset. And that cranks the capital costs big-time.

Although City Council members

may be reluctant to admit it, in pushing for municipal power, the council is really asking Boulder to commit to base-load renewable power. If that isn’t the end-game, there isn’t much to starting the exercise in the first place.

I worry that the council hasn’t thought through the capital-cost implications of base-load renewable power and, as a result, is dramatically underestimating the ultimate cost of a green municipal utility. Our agricultural future While most Boulder residents are not paying much attention, nine Boulder County Cropland appointees are determining for you the future use of 25,000 acres of public open space designated as agricultural-use lands.

The process began in May, and as a policy, will be presented to the public in October. At each meeting, every other week, we, the public, are allowed to observe, but not speak or respond.

There are numerous basic premises not being addressed by this group of nine. The primary one, of course, being: Do we want large agri-business, monocrop farmers who use numerous highly toxic chemicals to produce genetically modified organisms (GMOs) like corn, sugar beets, soy, and soon-to-be-GMO alfalfa in Boulder County public open space at all? Who decided in the first place that Boulder residents wanted these farmers polluting our soil, air and water every summer?

Only two of the nine people representing the hand-selected Cropland Policy Board are organic farmers with smaller farms, and more than 20,000 acres are already leased out to these “mainstream” chemical-laden farmers who sell their crops out of county. So, the odds are pretty good that the fundamental premise that this Cropland Policy document will support is the continuation of the failed Western Hemisphere farming experiment that has been going on the past 70 years.

We can’t feed the world according to Monsanto, with large mono-crops. We need to return to smaller, local and traditionally based farming techniques that preserve natural systems.

Northwest. I’ll be honest here. I have zero tolerance for “mainstream” chemical-driven farming. I do not believe chemicals are the answer to economics, feeding the world, creating health for people, animals and soil, or solving any other world problems.

We, the people of Boulder County, set the standards for who is allowed to farm in Open Space. We can have as high of standards as we want, I might add: permaculture and organic a must, biodynamic preferred, crop rotations required, soil health by only natural means, pastured animals. Set the standards high and people will respond. A certain percentage of the farmers would be required to be Community Supported Agriculture operations, which could include bees, bread-making, winter storage for vegetables, grain growing, and another percentage of farmers can be the Farmers’ Market farmers and have business arrangements with local restaurants. Those of you who care about saving Boulder County open space from GMO crops and toxic farming methods, please make your opinion clear and attend the Wednesday, Aug. 10, CPAG meeting that has been designated as the GE crop meeting when GMOs on county lands will be discussed.

Spaceship Earth Once upon a time there was a spaceship. The ship was unique in the galaxy. It had the ability to sustain itself by sequestering energy from the cosmos as it traveled through space. Food for the crew was grown right on the ship, and through an ages-old process known as photosynthesis, oxygen was harvested for breathing as well. The operation of the ship was divided into three main categories: management, crew and technical support.

Management made all the critical decisions and controlled security and the judiciary, taking valuable input from the crew and the technical staff in order to keep the human species alive for the voyage that was to last for more than 2 million years. Human reproduction was to be regulated by available resources. After about 50,000 years and due to the fact that life spans increased as knowledge of disease control improved, population increased beyond the optimum model. The ship’s management over the years had also acquired a larger-than-normal amount of control, and influence over the crew, and ideological differences as to the purpose of and responsibility for the voyage became a source of contention.

The technicians warned of lifestyle adjustments that were necessary for all on board to maintain the sustainability of the flagship, and the difference Boulder Weekly

between a plentiful life and one that was stressed for resources became unduly imbalanced.

Eventually, after it became abundantly obvious that the ship was in peril, everybody agreed in principle to the necessary adjustments, but implementation was delayed. And even though there was a clear path for survival, management was slow to yield its resources or its ideological views, so the critical point for control of the ship passed before the necessary changes could be fully implemented.

The crew died first, then the techni-

cal staff and, finally, with no knowledge of how to run a hugely complex ship, management, rich in wealth and power and fixated in the righteousness of its ideology, also perished.

Astonishingly, the spaceship, running on auto pilot and relieved of its requirements to support human life, survived along with a few hardy subspecies for another 5 billion years and was even visited and inhabited by other intelligent life forms who were quick to marvel at the incredible resources available on the ship that were never tapped.

Ban bigots In less than two months, the ban on gays in the military will come to an end.

“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” (DADT) the policy of silence put in place as a compromise by President Bill Clinton will be swept away in favor of equality. Well, that’s one campaign promise President Obama has kept. Now all people regardless of gender, race or sexual preference, will be able to serve their country. And for some, this is a terrible thing.

“I am disappointed the president hasn’t properly addressed the concerns expressed by military service chiefs before certifying the repeal [of DADT],” said Rep. Howard P. McKeon, R-Calif.

“Their worry that the combat readiness of our force could be placed at risk, particularly those serving on the front lines in Afghanistan and Iraq, must be taken seriously.”

It was this thinking that delayed the repeal of DADT for so long. And although it’s clear that those in the military understand military needs better than those of us who have never served, it’s really hard to understand how knowing there are gay guys in one’s unit could possibly impact “combat readiness.”

The fact that gays have served our nation for so long in secret with no negative impact on our military proves that they’re up to the task, so clearly their preparedness and their skill are not the issue. So what’s the problem?

Are straight soldiers so uncomfortable with gays that they can’t sleep at night and feel tired and stressed all day?

Do they feel to afraid to shower? Will knowing that the brother in arms beside them has a boyfriend make them too afraid to go into combat?

If so, then we propose a new ban, one that bars ignorant bigots from serving. After all, a soldier who is too distracted by the sex lives of others to focus on his job shouldn’t be in the military in the first place.

Chasing the “God” particle Scientists say they’re inching closer to uncovering the deepest secrets of the atom and that they may be on track to isolate the Higgs boson, the so-called “God” particle, by December 2012.

The Higgs boson is the keystone of the Standard Model of particle physics and has been used as the explanation for why matter has mass.

During a conference on particle physics in Grenoble, France, scientists discussed the latest data collected from the gazillion dollar proton supercollider buried 300 feet below the ground on the Franco-Swiss border, claiming that they’re finding what they’d expect to find if, in fact, the Higgs boson exists.

The super collider fires beams of protons at one another down a 17-milelong tunnel. Because the magnets in the tunnel are super-cooled to almost absolute zero — that’s minus 459.67 degrees Fahrenheit — the protons are able to attain speeds that are one-millionth of a percent below the speed of light, creating a crash of Big Bang proportions on an itsy-bitsy scale. The collision releases smaller particles for scientists to study, and somewhere among the quarks and gluons there might just be the Higgs boson — and a deeper understanding of how the universe came into being.

Knowledge is a great thing, except…

Wasn’t there something about the super collider generating tiny black holes that could destroy the universe? Why, yes, there was. In theory, each of these collisions creates tiny black holes that may or may not dissolve. If they do dissolve, all is well. If they don’t…

Let’s just say that the random appearance of a black hole anywhere near you would put all other problems in your life into perspective. In other words, observing the Hobbs boson might be the last thing humanity does.

It’s a complete coincidence that December 2012 — Dec. 21, to be precise — is when the Mayans predict the end of the world, right?

We hope so.

Tackling the football problem So what’s with this most recent rash of football players, at the college and pro level in Colorado, in the news due to charges that they raped women over the past year?

It’s not like you see a string of rapes by, say, male volleyball players, bowlers or curlers. What is it about football that makes players think they can do whatever they want with women’s bodies? Do they think they’re demi-gods? If so, they are mistaken.

Tours of the new facility, located at 5600 Flatiron Pkwy. in Boulder, will be offered until 7 p.m., following a 1 p.m. dedication ceremony.

The sheriff ’s administrative offices had been located at the county’s Criminal Justice Center, at 1777 6th St. in Boulder, since 1976.

The new building was purchased in 2009 from the Fresh Produce women’s apparel company for about $8 million dollars. The county invested another $5 million to remodel the structure. The building is approximately 76,100 square feet and sits on nearly seven acres of land.

The half-hour dedication ceremony will include remarks by Sheriff Joe Pelle and the introduction of the county commissioners and architect Alan Watkins.

Training offered for candidates As election season approaches, the Boulder city clerk is hosting three training sessions to help candidates understand the requirements, limitations and documentation involved in the process.

The first of the three election training sessions will be July 28 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Municipal Building lobby. Candidates will learn about the petition process, receive an overview of election guidelines and learn about the initial reporting forms that must be filed.

An Aug. 25 training will focus on election financial reporting for candidates and committee treasurers. A Sept. 15 training will wrap up with a general election review and a Q&A session.

County invests in organic farming business

oulder County officials have stepped up efforts to encourage sustainable farming on open space land, recently investing $114,000 on an irrigation system to convince a traditional farmer to go organic.

The farmer, Matt Pierce, is a member of the county’s Food and Agriculture Policy Council. He plans to begin farming organically on about 130 of the 1,000 acres of county open space he uses.

And he’s using that land to produce corn for cows at the nearby Mile Hi Dairy, which provides milk to Royal Crest Dairy in Longmont. In turn, Mile Hi provides Pierce with manure from the cows, to fertilize for the next round of corn.

“This corn ends up on your doorstep through Royal Crest,” says David Bell, the county’s agricultural resource manager for parks and open space.

Boulder Weekly recently joined Bell and Pierce on a tour of farmland on the north side of Longmont, which has gained attention in recent years for the use of biosolids — watered-down human sewage used as fertilizer. During the tour, biosolids were being applied to Pierce’s countyowned farmland.

The new center-pivot irrigation system is allowing Pierce to water 130 acres instead of 80 — and with the push of a button instead of labor-intensive and water-intensive irrigation with ditches, pipes and yellow plastic tubing.

“It saves time and water with the pivot,” Pierce says.

It’s not the first time the county has funded farming improvements on open space land, but it’s the first time a conventional farmer has agreed to go organic because of it. According to Bell, the county has previously spent about $131,000 on irrigation projects, such as creating holding ponds on county land, and the county has even funded the construction of hay sheds and granary bins to let farmers store their crops and wait for prices to go up during the off-season.

The county does reap some rewards, aside from boosting local organic food production. In Pierce’s case, the county pays for one-third of the seeds and fertilizer, and even shares the cost of a crop consultant, then gets the profits from onethird of the crops. It’s part of a self-funded Boulder Weekly

program in which the county leases its open space, hay sheds and granary bins to farmers, then uses the proceeds for maintenance and improvements. Last year, the county brought in about $1.2 million in lease revenues and spent $980,000 on such projects, Bell says.

Pierce is a third-generation farmer who is still wondering how he’s going to control weeds and bugs without chemicals.

“Other farmers think I’m crazy because I’m trying to make it profitable, with all the obstacles,” he says.

A large organic farm nearby has 80 workers. Pierce has five workers, and three of them are his kids, who are under the age of 14.

“I’ve probably got the only kids who are happy to go back to school,” he says with a laugh.

In addition to corn, Pierce grows barley for Coors, sunflowers and alfalfa hay. His primary enemies are Canadian thistle and bind weed, which crowd out crops and compete for their water. It takes three years of non-chemical farming to get certified as organic, and the county is letting Pierce spray this season one last time to get rid of the weeds before he begins the process.

When he can’t spray the weeds, he says, it will take five or six passes with a culivator to cut weeds between rows. As for the weevils that he won’t be able to spray, Pierce says he’ll lose some yield by having to cut crops early in the season — which eliminates the bugs’ shade and wipes them out with heat.

During the three-year transition, the county will cut his lease in half — since he won’t be able to collect premium funding for organic crops, which usually bring in about 15 percent more than conventional farm products.

As a user of controversial RoundUp Ready corn in his conventional farming efforts, Pierce says he respects the concerns about Monsanto products, but maintains that there are two sides to the story.

“There are a lot of benefits to it — we use a lot less chemicals,” he says of genetically modified crops, noting that there are two kinds of chemicals instead of six, and they are applied less frequently. “You get more yield, and crops do a lot better. But I’m not an expert. There’s always an extreme to each side.”

H

eroin-related deaths in 2011 in Boulder have more than doubled since last year, according to numbers provided by the Boulder Police Department, and they are on pace to be nearly four times higher than they were last year.

In addition, arrests for heroin possession are on track to nearly triple the total from 2010.

Sgt. Hartkopp of the Boulder County Drug Task Force, who asked to be identified by last name only so as to not compromise undercover operations, tells Boulder Weekly that there has been a marked increased in heroin use within the county during the past two years.

“Most of our heroin-related events take place in the city of Boulder,” Hartkopp says. “For whatever reason, the city of Boulder seems to have a more significant concentration of heroin users as opposed to the county. That could be because of the college scene. I could speculate, but I don’t know.”

Despite the uptick in heroin use, Hartkopp says Boulder still lacks a cohesive heroin scene.

“What we’ve seen are groups that tend to form a bond for a common goal,” Hartkopp says. “Quite often what we’ll see is somebody from within that [group] will drive down to Denver … and pick up the heroin for them and this group.

“We’re seeing that kind of association, but in regards to a subculture that is real prevalent and organized, no.

We haven’t seen anything like that.”

The increase in heroin activity observed by city and county police mirrors a statewide rise in heroin and opiate abuse. The Colorado Health Information Dataset (COHID) analyzes data from hospitals in Colorado, and heroin-related hospitalizations in Colorado rose 174 percent from 2000 to 2009, the last year for which data is currently available. Opiate- and narcotic-related hospitalizations rose 360 percent in Colorado during that time.

In Boulder County (COHID doesn’t track hospitalizations by city), heroin hospitalizations were very rare from 2000 to 2008 — no more than two incidents a year, and more often than not, there were none. In 2009, there were six.

Though heroin arrests and hospitalizations are increasing, county health workers haven’t noticed a significant increase in drug users taking advantage of county health services. Carol Helwig, who runs “The Works” needle exchange program for Boulder County Public Health, says there hasn’t been a noticeable increase in Boulder Weekly

New farm proposes partnerships and teaching

The one-acre Everybody Eats! farm is planted on 3.5 acres of land leased from the Shepherd Valley Waldorf School. The farm was founded by Dave Georgis, who started the seeds now planted in neat, studentfriendly rows in his basement earlier this spring.

Everybody Eats! is one of several farms and school partnerships in the Boulder area. The Children’s House Montessori School and Frederick Elementary are partnering with Bridgit’s Bounty, which broke ground in June on a fruit orchard that will supply students with hands-on learning opportunities and produce. Last year, Bridgit’s Bounty provided fresh vegetables to 200 families in the Firestone, Frederick and Dacono area. University of Colorado students founded C.U. P

erhaps the most beautiful thing about bluegrass music — more beautiful, even, than a southern accent over a banjo twang — is the way the genre blurs the line between audience and performer. Songs are passed down and shared and swapped so freely that it’s often hard to trace their origins. The phrase “TraditionalAmerican” in the songwriter credits is one of my favorite sights in music.

Somebody wrote those songs, but they’ve been played by so many hands and shaped by so many voices over the years, they no longer belong to one person. They have simply become part of the American tradition. Bluegrass is full of those “Traditional-American” songs.

sound is a little bit more lonesome when sung by a man looking back at a lifetime of experience, but anyone watching a 72-year-old Del McCoury take the stage will leave with the feeling that he’s still as good as he ever was.

Perhaps it’s appropriate, then, that one of the festival’s most anticipated newer acts is a 65-year-old banjo picker who’s been grey for 35 years. If he had focused on bluegrass rather than being a “wild and crazy guy” in the ’70s, it is possible Steve Martin would be mentioned in the same breath as McCoury or Larry Sparks, hailed as a legend of traditional bluegrass. But instead, he’s a newcomer to the genre, with the release of 2009’s The Crow and 2011’s Rare Bird Alert proving that unlike countless other actors-turned-musicians, he actually has the chops to match the publicity. Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers is not just another Hollywood vanity project. In fact, it may be some of the most earnest work Martin has ever done, in any field.

The old joke about Steve Martin’s comedy career is that nobody knows whether he is actually a good comedian, because his act centered around a deconstruction of comedy. Sure, he threw himself into his schlocky shtick better than anyone, and “King Tut” is never not funny, but there was very little of Steve Martin in Steve Martin’s act. As a musician, however, Martin has found a way to express himself onstage, and he seems positively giddy about it. In a 2010 interview with CNN at Bonnaroo, Martin talked like a man who had finally, after all these years, found his

passion in life.

“You can actually be moved by playing music on stage,” Martin told CNN. “In comedy, you’re never moved.”

On the surface, it sounds cynical, especially for a man who made millions entertaining people with his comedy. But Martin also gets at a fundamental truth about why farmers picked up their banjos and started to play after a long day in the fields. Few things move people the way creating music does, and it’s a feeling you want to share with other people. Sam Bush couldn’t stop talking about his band’s extended bluegrass rehearsal the same way my friend told anyone who would listen about his three days jamming in picking circles while at this year’s Telluride Festival.

“We really don’t have a whole lot of choice in the matter about what music we play,” says Pyschograss’ Phillips, a legend in his own right for his time with the David Grisman Quintet. “We listen to old records, digest it and put out whatever we got inside.”

So if you’re going to RockyGrass, be sure to bring something with strings, and be ready to put out whatever you got inside. This isn’t the kind of festival where you stand around looking at the stage for three days while the sun slowly saps away all your energy. This is the people’s music — passed down from fathers to sons, where relationships live and die in a small circle around the flicker of a fire. This is Traditional American, the American tradition. Anything else, as Bill Monroe would say, ain’t no part of nothing.

The Comedy of Errors doubles the fun

T

he Comedy of Errors is not exactly known for being the most intellectually rigorous member of the Shakespeare canon, even though scholars, perhaps bored with several centuries of excessive analysis of the heavyweight plays, now project layers of new meaning onto the work.

But it’s a tall order. The Comedy of Errors has a plot so preposterous that it’s hard to interpret as anything but a fun, 16th-century equivalent of an Adam Sandler movie. Sure, there’s a token love story and some minor suspense, but the majority of the play is simple comedy that requires belief in some pretty unbelievable premises for it to work.

Yet the Colorado Shakespeare Festival (which, since only two of the four plays in this year’s program are by the Bard, might as well be called the “Colorado Contemporary Theater Festival”) tackles the play admirably, making the ridiculous moments shine and adding just enough flourishes to keep the play fresh for Shakespeare vets.

The story begins with the Duke of Ephesus (Chris Kendall) sentencing Syracusan merchant Egeon (Sam Sandoe) to death, that being the punishment for a Syracusan merchant trespassing in Ephesus. But when the court learns of the heart-wrenching circumstances that led Egeon to Ephesus, it grants him an extra day to come up with the money to pay a fine or be executed.

Egeon’s ridiculous tale, told in a ridiculous way with ridiculous details, goes something like this: Years back, his wife gave birth to twin boys. At the same time, a poorer woman also begat twins, and the wealthy Egeon purchased them as slaves for his sons. The new family of six set sail, and while at sea, their boat sank, and father, son and slave and mother, son and slave found themselves clinging to opposite sides of a mast salvaged from the boat. The clouds part, and two ships appear, both speedily heading towards the marooned family.

But fate intervenes, and the mast hits a mighty rock, splitting the mast in twain and sending mother and father onto different ships. Egeon renames his remaining son Antipholus, after the lost one, and the same goes for the slave.

Egeon’s tale is one of the longest introductions in the canon, and it is notoriously hard to perform. The play’s co-directors,

Daniel Stein and Carolyn Howarth, do an admirable job of directing the cast during the speech, which includes a rather silly, soap-opera style pause when Egeon pauses in the middle of the story and proclaims out of anguish, “O, let me say no more!” but then quickly resumes at the urging of his captivated audience.

The play continues as Egeon’s son, Antipholus of Syracuse ( Josh Robinson), arrives in Ephesus with his slave, Dromio (Gary Wright). The pair’s twin brothers happen to live in Ephesus, and a hilarious series of mistaken identities ensues.

The production includes some nice touches to the story, such as ensemble members dressed as fish, who grab props and assemble in various poses during the play, acting as human set pieces. Both Dromios suffer constant beatings as they mistake their master’s doppelganger for the real thing, and instead of actually hitting them, the Antipholi smack the

air in front of their slaves with blue, stuffed fish, while a cast member stands in the background using props to make loud slapping noises. The CSF gets meta here, as eventually the props get into the hands of cast members, who use them to inflict pain on others, stuffed fish be damned.

Tom Coiner is particularly hilarious as Dromio of Ephesus, giving the first mistaken-identity scene great charm.

Robinson and Wright have great chemistry together, as do Coiner and Stephen Weitz, who plays Antipholus of Ephesus.

Karen Slack, as Adriana, wife of Antipholus of Ephesus, plays her screeching, besotted and befuddled character with stellar comedic timing and twitchy, dangerous eyes, and she damn near steals the first half of the play.

The second half — well, “devolves” is too harsh a word — transforms into almost purely physical comedy, and though well-choreograhed, it’s not nearly as funny as intended. It’s as if the directors didn’t trust Shakespeare’s words alone to carry the play, instead relying on slapstick, props and fart jokes. Call me an idealist, but I believe modern audiences can still derive pleasure from the exquisite lines of the Bard.

Nevertheless, the CSF does great justice to The Comedy of Errors, and it’s a great introductory show for a friend or loved one unconvinced of Shakespeare’s greatness.

Breaking walls with violins

Time for Three aims to combine classical and contemporary

ach DePue wants to break down walls.

Not everyone can accomplish that with a violin, but DePue is a member of Time for Three.

Known as a “classically trained garage band,” the trio of two violins and bass (DePue, Nicolas Kendall and Ranaan Meyer) has already earned a reputation for breaking barriers. So when DePue says he wants to “break down that wall that has existed so many years” between strict classical performance and the freedom of improvisation, and the wall between pop and classical music, he should be taken seriously.

Time for Three (tf3) made a splash last year at the Colorado Music Festival (CMF), premiering Chris Brubeck’s jazzy Travels in Time for Three with the orchestra and playing a deliciously raucous Brahms “Hungarian Dance” as an encore. Michael Christie, CMF’s music director, found tf3 so much fun that he invited them back this year for a full week’s residency and two concert programs: an ensemble-only concert on Tuesday, Aug. 2, and the Festival Finale concert with the orchestra Thursday, Aug. 4, and Friday, Aug. 5. In addition to the two concert programs, tf3 will present educational programs for young musicians and two other public events on Monday, Aug. 1.

A major focus of the education programs is what DePue describes as “a musician finding their connection to a piece of music and freeing themselves from the written page, not out of disrespect for the composer, but out of respect for themselves being as expressive and communicative with an audience as possible.”

DePue notes that improvisation was once a significant part of the classical tradition.

“We got away from that in classical music, mainly because of having to be ‘perfect’ in performance,” he says.

Now, tf3 has taken improvisation from folk, bluegrass and jazz traditions and added it to their classical training.

Another striking part of the tf3 formula is the ease with which the group incorporates pop, folk and other non-classical styles into their repertoire. Since their appearance at CMF last year, the group has been honing this part of their message through a residency at the Indianapolis Symphony, where DePue is concertmaster.

“The concert with the CMF orchestra is really an expansion of what we’ve been doing with the Indianapolis Symphony,” DePue says, “a series called Happy Hour. The ideals of Happy Hour are to engage the listeners of our generation with repertoire that

they’re more familiar with. So we make arrangements of more current pop tunes, but put in the context of the symphony orchestra. And we bridge that with some of the classical material that we love.

“This has been a major, major breakthrough for us. We’ve really taken what we’re trying to accomplish to another level, to bring as high an artistic level as possible to this ideal of pop music connecting with classical music.”

For example, tf3 has an arrangement of Katy Perry’s “Fireworks” that incorporates music from Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. Since they play a complete Stravinsky excerpt first, the audience recognizes the classical music within the pop arrangement.

“We’re conscious of relating the material, so that the listeners’ ears are getting hooked onto things that are unfamiliar and that then become familiar,” he says. “We want them to love Stravinsky.”

Also on the orchestral program is another jazzy premiere for Time for Three the group, a work commissioned from tf3 bass player Ranaan Meyer.

“Ranaan and Steve Hackman, our conductor and arranger for Happy Hour, have teamed up in writing a piece that celebrates the palette of jazz,” DePue says.

To complete the program, Christie will lead the CMF orchestra in Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, an orchestral showpiece that he hopes will stand up next to tf3’s vibrancy.

“The energy level these guys bring to the stage is just kind of ecstatic, so I was trying to find something that would measure up to them, frankly,” he says.

Tuesday’s ensemble-only concert will draw on the entire history of the group, including classical arrangements, gypsy and bluegrass.

“We’ll share everything we did from the beginning,” DuPue says, listing “Brahms’ ‘Hungarian Dance,’ ‘Czardas,’ the Bach Double Violin Concerto, Katy Perry and U2, something a little less familiar, including ‘Stillness is the Move’ by an indie band called the Dirty Projectors, ‘Hallelujah’ by Leonard Cohen, ‘Hide and Seek’ by Imogen Heap, ‘Orange Blossom Special’ and some originals by Ranaan.

“We’ve never played our solo set there at CMF, so I think it will be cool to share with everybody just a breath of where we’ve come from and where we’re going.”

Along the way, Claypool has done a host of outside projects, as well as three solo CDs; formed Oysterhead (with Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio and Police drummer Stewart Copeland); and fronted several other groups, including the Frog Brigade, Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains and the Fancy Band.

Primus, meanwhile, reunited for a 2003 EP, Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People, and a tour. They toured again in 2006. Now comes new music to go with a return to touring.

Claypool says Green Naugahyde merges a bit of the early Primus sound with newer stylistic elements that haven’t filtered into the previous albums.

“The comparison to Frizzle Fry is pretty obvious just because that was Jay Lane, a lot of that material was honed in the Jay Lane territory,” he said.

“And I also, over the past 10 years, have become way more comfortable with production and my vocals and just different elements that we wouldn’t really have tackled before with Primus. So there are some elements of sort of the Frog Brigade/Claypool world to it.

“But there are also strong elements that Ler has brought in,” Claypool says. “He brought in actual songs, which he never did before. Jay Lane, I encouraged him to bring in beats that we could write off of, and he did. … I’d say a good half of the record is stuff that came in independently [of me].”

A tour that begins Sept. 23 will be an opportunity to give fans a sampling of the new CD, as well as a chance to revisit the Primus back catalog.

“It will be a plethora of classic Primus material, and then we’re going to be sneaking in some new stuff,” Claypool said. “It [the set list] will be different every night, so it kind of goes on what the mood of us personally is and what the crowd is looking like.”

Weakling becomes hero

ncle Sam Wants You!” the posters shouted during the 1940s, but what if you were too scrawny to pass the physical and fight for your country? That’s the dilemma faced by Brooklyn weakling Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) in Captain America: The First Avenger.

Enter German-American scientist Dr. Erskine (Stanley Tucci), who picks Rogers to join a squad of men he’s turning into enhanced super-soldiers for the U.S. Army. Rogers struggles through the training but shows courage and empathy, and when it’s time to test out Erskine’s serum — with a little help from Stark Industries and grandfather Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) — it’s Rogers who is picked to go first.

Rogers emerges from the machine ripped and ready to defend his country, able to run lightning fast, swim deep into the water and much more. Helpful for fighting Nazis! Erskine’s previous experiment was for the Germans, and the result was the insane Johann Schmidt and his alter-ego Red Skull (Hugo Weaving).

Good guy, meet bad guy.

The cool, beautiful Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) is the love interest for Rogers, and while she’s attracted to his compassionate nature, there’s never a spark between them. Later in the film, when he’s sacrificing himself for the country, their banter is embarassingly unbelievable.

Hugo Weaving brings a certain evil energy to his role as Red Skull, but where it needed a larger-than-life

villain — complete with minions and mysterious weapons — he was too tame, not at all frightening and no challenge to Captain America’s superior strength.

I was also quite surprised by the role that sidekick Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) had: He’s vital in the comic book series, but in the movie he’s almost invisible.

It (almost) never works

ince American media sexualizes almost everything except sex, Hollywood romantic comedies about two people making hey-hey without any big plans for any big future rarely come easily or operate from a spirit of carnal delight. The strain of being hip and loose, yet mindful of the conventional, even Puritanical rom-com imperatives, is too much to handle. Leave complicated sexual lives to the French, many Americans mutter, even as they secretly envy the easy Gallic flirtation, not to mention their attention to detail when it comes to a salad.

This year, No Strings Attached presented Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher — a real actress co-starring with a chalk outline of a leading man — as two halves of a sustained casual fling inching toward love and a substantive relationship. Now, showcasing the hyperactively entertaining pair of Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, we have the more interesting and energetic Friends With Benefits. that comprise the crime-fighting team The Avengers. Hence “The First Avenger” part of the title. In addition to Captain America, the crew includes Iron Man (Tony Stark, as portrayed by Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (as portrayed by Chris Hemsworth) and The Hulk (as portrayed by Edward Norton).

Captain America: The First Avenger offers a superior film, a story with more human interest, a much more sympathetic and likable protagonist, and a logical explanation for his superpowers.

I’m a sucker for the era, and the production team has done a splendid job of evoking mid1940s America, from the World’s Fair that Rogers and Bucky visit to the street scenes and street patter of Brooklyn of the earlier part of this past century.

Even with the shortcomings, the movie has excellent special effects. Rogers’ weakling-tohero story is satisfying, and his gradual appreciation for the powers he’s been granted are fun to watch.

It’s good fun and one of the best comic-book films I’ve seen in years.

“No relationship. No emotions. Just sex!” So says the hotshot website art director played by Timberlake, recruited from his California gig for a New York City job as GQ magazine’s design head.

(The film takes place in a strange, distant time before the recession, when people flew on airplanes with tickets paid for by prospective employers.) The woman he’s pitching, an executive headhunter played by Kunis, says she’s up for it.

The newbie and his savvy Manhattan sponsor fall into a fast friendship. They fit. He’s “emotionally unavailable,” still smarting over his mother leaving his now-Alzheimer’s-addled father, played by

Richard Jenkins with his usual, light-fingered skill; she’s “emotionally damaged” (in a perky, edgy way), the daughter of a boozy free spirit perpetually between relational engagements played by Patricia Clarkson.

Why not throw in some intercourse?

Clarkson appeared in the ensemble of director Will Gluck’s previous film, Easy A, which starred Emma Stone and percolated very nicely, from the writing to Gluck’s brisk direction. Friends With Benefits is coarser.

(Sensitive souls recovering from the grungier bits in Horrible Bosses might want to wait a week or two.) But it zips along.

The script by Gluck, Keith Merryman and David A. Newman has a serrated

edge, and neither of the leading roles begs for audience sympathy. Gluck’s feature deals every which way with children of divorce and/or single parents, looking for love. They’re trying to chart a course toward something more authentic than the drippy scenes we’re shown from a fake romantic comedy (wonderfully acted

by Jason Segel and Rashida Jones) watched at different points in Friends With Benefits by Jamie and Dylan. I enjoy both Timberlake and Kunis; just this side of manic, they seem right together.

Like so much we see and hear in R-rated rom-coms these days, the movie’s raunch has its pushy side. So does the editing by Tia Nolan, which chops up simple and often very funny bits of dialogue into bits better left alone to breathe visually. These things matter, because they affect how we relate to the people on screen. Still, enough goes right to compensate for what doesn’t quite. You can probably guess the ending. Then again, I doubt Hollywood will ever make a movie about casual sex that turns serious where you can’t guess the ending.

Snack bar with Boulder ties benefits malnourished

oulder is about to get another nutritional bar.

But this one is for a good cause, and its product developer lives in town.

Soon to be situated among the various granola and proteinrich bars already on the shelves at the Boulder Whole Foods locations will be a new bar with a mission: To help end the malnutrition of thousands of children in Africa.

The newest addition is from Two Degrees, a company based out of San Francisco that launched in January and has promised a one-for-one business philosophy with its sales. Co-founder and president Will Hauser says that for every bar sold, the company will donate one ready-to-use food nutritional pack to a child suffering from acute malnutrition in Malawi or Kenya.

“Our goal, in terms of sales and nutrition packs distributed, is we want to give away tens of millions of nutrition packs in a couple of years, and we think it’s both optimistic and realistic, especially with a phenomenal partner like Whole Foods,” Hauser says.

Boulder resident Barr Hogen, head of product development for Two Degrees, says she was inspired to begin working with the company two years ago.

“The concept is, we’re enjoying this food, and we’re very privileged to be enjoying this food, and we have ample amounts of it,” she says. “But it’s more real, especially for someone on the consumer end. It’s right there. Every time a bar is sold, we have to give back.”

product developer for Odwalla, being able to create a new kind of bar with tastes that complement the unique business model of the company was important to her.

“I’m kind of tired of having the same old bar,” Hogen says. “Our bar is not like a fortified bar, we’re not trying to be a protein bar, we’re trying to be, if you need a snack and are hungry, one of the things that you can reach for and know that you’re doing some good.”

So far, Hogen has worked to create three flavors for the company: Chocolate Peanut, Cherry Almond and Apple Pecan. She says she’s currently working on a chocolate sun butter flavor without nuts.

Hauser says that while Whole Foods may be inundated with companies that are involved in social causes and giving back, Two Degrees is uniquely different on several fronts, the most notable being that Two Degrees doesn’t give a percentage of sales to a cause but rather makes direct donations from the amount of bars sold.

“We total our sales and make donations according to the unit number of sales that we’ve made, and that’s a really important distinction,” Hauser says. “That’s how our customers know every single time they buy a bar, yes — we really are giving away a nutrition pack, no matter how many bars we’ve sold at that time.”

Additionally, Hauser says, Two Degrees only donates nutrition packs that are manufactured on the ground in the areas they are working to help. In Malawi, a facility run by Valid Nutrition hires local residents and uses local ingredients to make the nutrition packs — bags of dense, healthy, 500-calorie paste — providing economic opportunities to the area as well as serving medical needs.

According to the World Health Organization, severe acute malnutrition is a life-threatening condition requiring specialized treatment, which until the recent introduction of ready-to-use nutrition packs, consisted of lengthy therapeutic diets and medical care in outpatient settings where disease was often spread. The packs do not require the addition of water or refrigeration, and, according to WHO, have a 95 percent success rate of treating acute malnutrition.

Two Degrees already donated 10,800 nutritional packs in February to children in Malawi and is projected to donate 50,000 more next month to Malawi and Kenya.

Whole Foods regional buyer Mike Rapport says the decision to bring the bars into both the Boulderarea stores and every other Whole Foods market in the nation comes from a drive to help Two Degrees meet its goal.

“We brought it back and we looked at it, and it was such a compelling story because it’s so missiondriven,” Rapport says. “There’s so much in line with see snack bar Page 43

TIDBITES Food happenings around town Alfalfa’s revives pancake breakfast Alfalfa’s in Boulder is bringing back its Pancake Breakfast to benefit Community Food Share.

The event will be held in the Alfalfa’s parking lot on Saturday, July 30, from 7 to 10 a.m. Admission is $7 for adults and $3 for kids 10 and under. The event features live music and all-you-can-eat pancakes, bacon, sausage, eggs, coffee, juice and other breakfast treats, including vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options.

“This was always one of our most popular events at Alfalfa’s, and we had a great run doing it for 11 years, from 1985 to 1996,” says Paul Gingerich, culinary director for Alfalfa’s.

Community Food Share distributes free food to those in need through a network of 56 member agencies and several direct-service programs targeting specific at-risk populations such as low-income seniors and families with children enrolled in the school free lunch program.

New Twisted barleywine on tap Twisted Pine Brewing Company unveiled its Bough Breaker barleywine at its 16th anniversary party on July 16.

The American-style barleywine is a deep, rich red with aromas of citrus hops, dark fruit and light toffee.

“At 9 percent ABV and 120 IBU, this beer is the perfect candidate for a lengthy rest in any beer lover’s basement,” brewery owner Bob Baile says, adding, “but with a beer this tasty, the temptation to drink it right away is often too great.”

Rapport says he expects the flavors of and the mission behind Whole Foods’ newest bars to be well-received on a national level, but especially in the Boulder community.

“Clearly, [Boulder] is a great market for this kind of thing, and there’s a lot Boulder Weekly

of income here that could support it,” Rapport says. “But even in other markets, Whole Foods attracts a certain kind of customer, and I think that our customer base in general will be behind this product.”
