Beyond the brink

T

his was a bad week for our country. Like so many other times in the last couple of years, racism boiled to the top of the national discussion. But this time is different. We’ve now moved beyond racism as threat, to racism as motive and its only going to get worse from here.

Words matter, and when they come out of the president’s mouth they matter even more. Trump thinks it’s just fine to tell four women of color — all members of Congress who don’t particularly like him or his policies — to “go back to where they came from.” He told reporters he isn’t worried about the fact that white nationalists and neo-Nazis are cheering what he said.

Trump views those who don’t swear their loyalty to him as somehow undeserving of their U.S. citizenship. And yes, that makes the current president of the United States a dimwitted racist with no grasp of what this nation stands for or what our soldiers have died to preserve.

The right to dissent is the right of all U.S. citizens. It is what makes us different and better than all those countries with actual “shithole” governments like Russia, China, Turkey and North I

Korea that Trump so adores. We used to have an appreciation for such freedoms in this country, but that was before large numbers of white voters become so fearful of living in a more diverse world that they opted to trade away the U.S. Constitution and everything it stands for in exchange for holding onto their power and privilege for just a little while longer. I still can’t believe they sold their nation’s soul for so little in return.

At this point, the president and those who comprise his base of political support — which we are told still includes over 90 percent of Republicans — apparently believe that citizens who are not white, regardless of whether or not they were born here, do not have the Constitutional rights to free speech and dissent. If Trump supporters — including the Republican cowards in Congress — didn’t agree with the president on this point, they would be speaking out against him at this very moment condemning his racist statements. Their silence is the witness that convicts them.

Like it or not, a voter’s priorities can make them a racist. Not speaking out against overt racism because you believe to do so might hurt your chances of getting a tax cut or seeing interest rates go down, the market go up, or getting Roe v. Wade oversee DYERTIMES Page 6

turned, most certainly is a racist decision.

It’s not an either/or world when it comes to justice and morality.

“America, love it or leave it” was always an asinine statement that insulted the U.S. Constitution and all those who’ve actually read and understand it.

But the current president’s version of that twisted anti-democracy sentiment — “Trump’s America, love him or leave it” — is so much worse.

Here is what Trump’s statement aimed at Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts is not: It is not “poorly thought out;” “somewhat inappropriate;” “something I wouldn’t have said;” “taken out of context;” “not constructive,” “language that could be misconstrued as racist,” or any of the other things Congressional Republicans have claimed while trying to excuse Trump’s racism because they fear his political base and consider their own re-election to be more important than God, country and their fellow human beings everywhere.

What the president said is simply racist, and he said it because he is a racist. And I will say this for the thousandth time, we knew he was a racist when he announced he was running for president. I won’t rehash his long record here that includes dozens of well-documented examples that make clear exactly who this man is and what he believes.

On Tuesday, July 16, Democrats in the House along with four Republicans worthy of their elected office, condemned the president’s tweets as racist over the objections of every other Republican in the House. It should be noted Dems were very careful not to call the president himself a racist.

My question is, why not? He is a racI

ist. Seriously, at this point why are we mincing words, it’s gutless and dishonest. Fox News and Republicans in Congress (minus the four) don’t need the help of Democrats to spray Teflon on the president after every racist statement and act he commits. It’s time to just call a Trump a Trump.

Many news outlets, for the first time in two years, finally called out Trump as a racist on their editorial pages. To that I say, thank you, it’s about time and welcome back to doing your jobs.

The president thinks that because I disagree with him that I should just leave the country. Well, I sure hate to disappoint him, but I’m staying.

And we all need to stay because it’s going to take a long time to repair the damage that Trump and his supporters have done. Even if he’s tossed out of the White House in 2020, it’s not over. Sadly, Trump has taken us past the point of no return for the foreseeable future, possibly decades. You can’t just put the racism/white fear genie back in the bottle.

And you don’t have to look far to see what the future holds.

This week’s news from around the country had a theme; racism breeds violence. James Fields, Jr., the avowed neoNazi who plowed his car into a crowd during the 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, was given a second life sentence for his attack that killed counter-protestor Heather Heyer.

In Louisiana, longtime civil rights activist and founder of the African American Museum in Baton Rouge, 75-year-old Sadie Roberts-Joseph, was found dead, stuffed in the trunk of her car. She had been murdered by suffocation.

Van Spronsen was shot and killed by police. Van Spronsen, a self-described anti-fascist, had told his friends he just couldn’t take seeing the Trump administration’s continued abuse of immigrants. So, he launched what was in effect a suicide mission against the private detention center holding migrants in Tacoma, a location where Van Spronsen had frequently protested. He was throwing incendiary devices at the cars belonging to guards when police arrived and killed him.

In New York, the feds have announced they will not bring charges against white police officer Daniel Pantaleo. You may remember Pantaleo from the video that showed him choking a black man named Eric Garner as he kept saying, “I can’t breathe.” Garner died from that incident. His alleged crime was selling single cigarettes without charging a tax. Watch for Trump to fan the flames of the racially charged Garner case next week.

I won’t take the space here to again describe the ongoing atrocities and torture being committed against defenseless migrants including children at our southern border and elsewhere, or to detail the facts behind how 9,000 or so of our nation’s border patrol agents have been using racist, misogynistic Facebook forums to make fun of migrants who died in their care and to mock, in unbelievably vulgar ways, the

same four members of congress the president is targeting with his overt racism.

Yes, it has been a bad week, but it’s just the beginning of many bad weeks to come.

Like I said, words matter. The president’s words really matter, and he is using them to push this country to violence... not the brink of violence.

There are no bodies in the morgue at the brink of violence. And we most certainly have bodies in the morgue; from car trunks in Louisiana and detention centers in Tacoma, from synagogue shootings to white nationalist rallies, from violence at churches and mosques and workplaces to an increase in deaths along the border, the bodies are piling up. And Trump’s irresponsible racist rhetoric is playing no small role.

I wish I believed the president is just too ignorant to understand that his racist comments about those four women has put them in very real physical danger, but I don’t believe that. He knows his words cause violence and he doesn’t care... or worse, he likes it.

It is no longer a matter of wondering if the president’s incendiary racism and the Republicans condoning that racism will spark more violence. It’s now only a matter of when, who, how much and which side of the political divide will be responsible for spilling the blood. Sadly, that’s where we are.

So, get ready.

Fight the power

facing Republican backlash, lawsuits, recall campaigns and the argument that elected officials overreached because a similar move was defeated by referendum. The quote by the governor could be interpreted that he hopes that those fueling the backlash will ease up, not that there’s nothing else to do and “mission accomplished,” which are completely your words and graphic.

Please encourage and support moving in the right direction and continuing to push to reach the goal, rather that beating up on and weakening the Dems as they are working against the forces that are pushing the petal to the metal in the direction of destroying our future.

Why not give some ink to how we can support the Democrats to do even better, build momentum while celebrating every step forward?

When the Democrats won the Colorado house and senate and governor’s office in 2018, Joel Dyer wrote an article comparing the Democrats to The Producers in the Broadway play, making the point that the Democrats were corporate shills who now that they had power had to be afraid of being exposed as green-washing hypocrites.

What actually happened was that the Democrats moved the ball forward against the oil and gas industry providing legislation and legal tools to help the environment with SB 181. Why not publish the narrative that Democrats are trying to help average people and the environment through a flawed system, against the money/odds fighting a very powerful corporate industry? 5th annual

101-word fiction contest

T

he 101-word fiction contest has become one of our favorite traditions here at Boulder Weekly. It’s a chance for us to read the best flash fiction from writers in Boulder County and beyond. Without a doubt, this was the best round of submissions we’ve received in the five years we’ve held the contest, and we think it shows in the quality of the winning entries.

Here are the nuts and bolts of how we determined the top 20 entries: As in years prior, each writer was limited to five submissions. Many of the writers who entered the contest submitted more than one piece, but we did not take abundance of entries into consideration while judging.

There were four judges who assigned a score

between one and five on each entry. It was a blind process, as the name of the writer was stripped from each entry before reading, and we only learned of the winning identities after tallying the scores. Thus, you’ll see some writers appear more than once in the list of winners.

We ended up with five winners, five honorable mentions and 10 additional finalists, however, there were plenty more we wished we could have included. The top 20 finishers have been published here.

Thanks to all who participated in this contest. We hope you enjoy this year’s selections as much as we did.

s the pink sun vanished, the crowds on the pier were replaced with taffy wrappers and cigarette butts.

A red-bearded cowboy walked alone, plug of tobacco in his lip, eyes of fire, boots made of mermaid skin.

He walked with purpose, each step a heavy clunk-clunk-clunk on the wooden slats, the ocean sloshing far below.

He passed two quiet ladies with big eyes and smoldering coffee cups.

There were no shops now — just railings and pay-per-squint binoculars.

When he reached the end, it was up and over.

Into the deep green sea, boots first.

This time, he’d finish her.

he phone call came the morning after he blew out his birthday candles. Had he known it was cancer, he would have wished for something other than a new skateboard.

Days were spent hunting for four-leaf clovers, and blowing white tufts off of the dandelions that littered the lawn; eyes tightly shut, wishing his mother home.

His little brother crawled into bed with him again. He heard his grandmother downstairs puttering about; she never slept anymore. He crawled out of his window, and onto the roof.

Every night it was the same, desperately searching the sky for a shooting star.

He managed to get his B.A. on the seven-year plan, despite the demonstrations, Friday afternoon clubs and other distractions of college life in the turbulent early ’70s. He majored in poli-sci, secured a government job and even joined a country club.

Today, at his coffee break with his coworkers, he would not leave any doubt that he was still a bad-ass revolutionary. He sported his Friday dress-downs, wrap-around Ray Bans and Che on his chest as he belted out his order, “A grande soy latte to go, please.”

voice burst into the room. A woman’s voice. Singing in a foreign language. Melodic yet cautious, as if proper pitch exacted too hefty a price.

An alarm. Did I do something wrong? My mind, as if suddenly commandeered by an elaborate Rube Goldberg machine, began to connect the musical dots. One epiphany led to another, which triggered yet another. I could hear only silence.

The small, shiny steel ball came to rest. Its terminus reached; its journey complete. The nurse, noting the absence of any family members and the waste basket not emptied by the previous shift, left the room.

The morgue would have to be called. She wondered if handsome Pedro were on duty.

ou noticed me when others turned away and bestowed the gift of acceptance despite my imperfections. We became inseparable. Times were tough and money even scarcer, but we shared what little we had.

Nights ended with you snuggled up by my side providing warmth and comfort. Winter arrived. The bitter cold and snow blanketed the landscape. Two of us laid down one night and only one woke up.

My faithful friend stood guard until they discovered me. Homelessness made me feel invisible in a sea of people. Loneliness my only companion until Scout rescued me. I died knowing I was loved.

But now it was impulsive night with no sleep. She lugged the heavy canoe off the top carrier and steadied it at the shore. Her feet were cold in the shallows. She remembered everything this time — even a pillow. All there was left to do was row until the lights were distant enough. As the bottle rolled off her fingers she settled back to watch the stars.

ary was a young fair-haired social worker in her mid20s assigned to our family. She took special interest in me. I was 16 and at risk of dropping out of school.

“How do you spend your time away from school?” she asked.

“I like drawing and reading a lot, mostly science fiction,” I replied.

They were big. I don’t know if they were alive or manufactured, but they swooped in loud and close. One of them bumped me. I thought I was doomed, but then they flew away. Maybe they are harmless. I’m telling you now so you won’t be nervous when you encounter them.

The day men walked on the moon

A

while back, astronaut “Buzz” Aldrin, the second man on the moon, asked people old enough to remember to write him about where they were when Apollo 11 landed on July 20, 1969.

Former Boulder City Councilman and builder Bob White has a terrific story about that. He was in an indigenous village high in the Bolivian Andes. Why and how he got there makes the story all the cooler.

(The story appears in his book, titled The Trip.)

The yarn begins in 1968, when White, then an undergraduate at University of Colorado Boulder, agreed to drive a pal to Alaska at the end of the spring semester. His buddy had a job on a fishing boat lined up.

Bob figured he could find summer work in Fairbanks as a carpenter.

So they set off in Bob’s 1962 4x4 Chevy pickup for Alaska. They had a few adventures along the way, including the de rigueur encounter with a bear and a harrowing drive across the melting ice of the Yukon River; the locals in Dawson were betting on whether they would make it.

Bob dropped off his pal in Anchorage and headed to Fairbanks to look for work.

There wasn’t any, so he headed farther north on the Alcan Highway to the town of Circle, just south of the Arctic Circle. No work there either.

That’s when he realized that a) he had driven as far north as he could go on a road connected to the rest of the world, and b) he was out of money, food, gas and options.

So he decided to drive to Tierra del Fuego.

And a few minutes after making the decision, a couple of discouraged hikers emerged magically from the woods looking for a ride home and willing to pay for it. “Home” happened to be Portland. It turned out there was lots of construction work in Portland. Good thing, too. Driving to Tierra del Fuego takes money.

So come spring 1969, Bob and two companions set out for Ultima Thule South.

Weeks of adventures ensued.

Bob tried his hand at bullfighting in Mexico. The bull won. Fortunately it spared him.

Bob and his companions dined on the heads of capybaras (a large, semidomesticated rodent) with the Los Indios de los Colorado tribe, which the locals had described as “headhunters.” The chief showed his guests how to suck out the eyeballs and brains.

They arrived at the Honduran-El Salvador border as a cross-border fire fight was breaking out and were pinned down for hours.

At a Panama City bar, Bob got drunk with Thor Heyerdahl, the Norwegian adventurer who in 1947 had sailed a balsa log raft named Kon-Tiki 4,300 miles from Peru to Puka Puka in the South Sea Islands.

Then Heyerdahl showed Bob his latest vessel — a reed ship like those of the ancient Egyptians that he intended to sail across the Atlantic.

By July 20, 1969, the intrepid trio had worked their way into the Bolivian Andes, and were seriously lost in them.

“We were driving across the high Alto Plano when suddenly one of the guys turned on the radio, which we had not bothered to try for ages, and the overseas U.S. military broadcast of the [moon] landing came on,” Bob wrote. “At the same moment we came over a rise and there was a remote stone Indian village...”

After a while the inhabitants gathered around the truck with the three bearded gringos glued to the radio.

“It was one of those rare days when the moon is still visible in the sky during the day,” Bob said. “I proceeded to translate in Spanish what was happening on the moon. Yes, I told them, we were, that very moment, walking on the moon, which I pointed to for full effect... I see MOON LANDING Page 18

Through eating disorders and depression, Sean Van Horn vies for the North American vertical ski record

The

dull beam of a headlamp bloomed in the dark as Sean Van Horn’s skis skidded to a stop at the bottom of Aspen’s Buttermilk ski hill.

Van Horn collapsed onto the spring snow. He was 14 hours into a 24-hour attempt to break the North American vertical record for skiing. That meant over 40 laps up and down the Tiehack run for 63,000 feet in just one day. It had been a long day, going up and down on skinny race skis.

As he lay in the snow, Van Horn began to shiver and hyperventilate. His wife, Kylee, hoisted him by the arms and carried him into the patrol hut where he curled into a ball and fought back tears.

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry,” were the only words he could muster between labored gasps for air.

Van Horn, 32, is no stranger to suffering. As an endurance athlete with ultrarunning, cycling and skimo (ski mountaineering) accolades, the North American vertical ski record was just another event in a series of endurance missions for Van Horn. The original record was set by skimo legend Mike Foote last year in Whitefish, Montana, at an elevation almost 4,000 feet lower than Buttermilk. The record is the vertical equivalent of skiing up Everest from sea level to summit and back.

It wasn’t Van Horn’s desire to suffer that prompted the record-breaking attempt, but rather his journey to free himself from suffering. The main goal of his spring ski was to raise awareness of mental illness and raise money for Aspen Strong, a nonprofit in the Roaring Fork Valley that provides mental health care services.

Van Horn has struggled with mental illness since high school. Cycles of depression led to addictive behaviors, and he self-medicated with heavy marijuana use and endurance sports.

“I struggled a lot when I was young,” Van Horn says. “Endurance sports were a saving grace for me, they helped shift addictive and obsessive behaviors into something more positive.”

He trained. He got good — fast. He started riding two to five hours each day, and rode in the Junior World Cups. He went on to compete on CU Boulder’s collegiate cycling team. But inside, he was JULY 18, 2019

still struggling.

Unchecked depression had begun to mingle with excessive exercise and disordered eating. A back injury took him out of cycling, prompting obsessive tendencies to become full-blown eating disorders, exacerbated by his depression.

“I was on the verge of starvation, and completely out of control,” says Van Horn.

Athletes, particularly those that participate in sports that emphasize speed and svelte physique, like the spandexintensive skimo and ultra running where Van Horn competes, are especially susceptible to eating disorders. In a study by the National Eating Disorders Association, male athletes were 38 percent more likely to develop bulimia, and 10 percent more likely to be anorexic than the general population. It’s estimated that eating disorders in men are underreported. These numbers likely don’t represent the full reality that men in endurance sports confront: the pressure to have an idealized physical body and tough-guy mentality.

Unable to bike because of his back injury, Van Horn picked up running as a way to cope with his internal struggles. He would go on back to back 20-mile runs in the Boulder foothills without eating.

Then, starving, he’d lock himself in his room to eat.

Van Horn knew that he was in trouble.

The cycles of deprivation, over-training and then bingeing were wearing on him.

The loss of control scared him. He felt isolated and ashamed, out of place compared to the elite athletes around him.

Everyone on social media was so fit, and so happy — why wasn’t he?

“You’re supposed to be tough, you’re supposed to be hard,” says Van Horn.

“You’re supposed to put yourself through hell and suck it up, no complaints.”

He decided to get help. He started seeing a therapist. He started training more seriously for running, channeling some compulsive tendencies into a more regimented schedule that mandated days off, and a well-rounded diet. He eventually moved to Carbondale, where he now lives.

“It’s amazing,” Van Horn says. “You can take something that’s really ugly and it can be shifted to something that’s really positive.”

He began to speak out about his depression and eating disorders and found that many friends and teammates see VAN HORN Page 18

had identical struggles. Van Horn began to understand his own mental illness as a sickness, not a character flaw.

“Everyone has their struggles and their battles,” he says. “Hearing other athlete’s stories encouraged me to seek help, and connect with others going through similar things.”

On the floor of the ski hut, Van Horn lay huddled, his head in Kylee’s lap. He thought about the lows he’d reached before. He thought about Kylee and all the people he’d shared his story with. He took deep, calming breaths. He nibbled on a cheeseless pizza.

Reflecting on his mission to bring awareness to mental health, he stood up, ready to ski again.

Even though his back was aching and his feet were covered with blisters, Van Horn skied on.

And so Van Horn skied for 24 hours straight. After a few, slower laps to start, he began to gain momentum. Friends that he’d

shared his story with flocked to the ski hill to accompany him on his final laps, moving in a line across the ski hill.

In the end, he was just a couple hundred feet short of the record. But for Van Horn, it was anything but a failure.

“I learned that sharing your story is always a worthwhile endeavor,” he says. “I think many of us are longing for connection in this world, and all too often we guard our imperfections when in reality those shared defects are often what unite us. I learned that I can dig a hell of a lot deeper than I ever thought.”

He raised over $10,000 for Aspen Strong and shared his story with hundreds of people, many of whom took the time to share how profoundly his story had impacted them.

“I learned that I’m not alone,” he says, “and that a lot of other people in my community that I respect have dealt with similar mental health struggles.”

guess not wanting to hurt our feelings they all just nodded their heads, but the look of disbelief was in their eyes. I realized I was a time traveler for them...”

And then the strangers’ real magic show began.

“While our native friends were recovering from the moon story, one of our guys happened to pull out a frisbee we had in the truck and flung it to the other guy... our new friends were amazed. ... We passed it to one of [the kids]. In an instant he passed it to one of his little friends and in minutes a big round robin of new frisbee players was born...”

Then Bob pulled out a tape recorder and asked the kids to say or sing something. The kids sang one of their local songs, which he recorded and then, to their amazement played back to them.

“If you think the children were astonished; you should have seen the adults,” Bob said. “I’m sure I could have started a religion around the recorder...”

And then came the pièce de résistance, the Polaroid instant camera.

“I lined up the head men of the village with the chief in the center, for full effect and proper position,” Bob said.

“These Polaroids did not give you a picture right away. First a muddy piece of paper rolled out of the bottom of the camera, and then you held the paper by the edges for a few minutes as it developed.

“I had the men gather around me as I held the paper. Then slowly but surely the image appeared...

“What was amazing was that the chief and the others did not recognize themselves but recognized the guy standing beside them, then realized that must be ‘me’ next to him...

“That night they had a great fiesta for us and we ate a lot of something unrecognizable, but tasty.”

My favorite “class” in elementary school was always show-and-tell.

I can’t think of a more profoundly appropriate — and American — way to have marked the moment Armstrong and Aldrin walked on the moon than with an impromptu show-and-tell class staged by three gringos who had never been in the Peace Corps for children (of all ages) who have never been to school.

(And yes, Bob did reach Tierra del Fuego. But for the rest of the story, you’ll have to buy his book.)

Wilson was not a writer at the time. In fact, at that moment, he was in a continuing education class for real estate. To save himself from death by boredom, Wilson started pondering this question. He worked on it during class, and it still tugged at him when he got home. As he started assembling the story, a couple sentences turned into a paragraph, which eventually grew into chapters. Within three months, Wilson had written a 400-page manuscript.

“I had never done anything like that before,” he says. “It just poured out of me. When it happened, I definitely focused on it and [thought] maybe this is something I should be looking at.”

Sixteen years and six books later, this process seems to have served Wilson well. In his newest book, The Dead Girl in 2A, Wilson asks, “What if two strangers met on a plane, yet had an inkling they knew each other?” The story unfolds in a twisty, turny fashion as two strangers piece together a fragmented, tumultuous past, leading them on a creepy journey that forces them to question memory, identity, life and death.

Wilson grew up in California but has lived in Colorado since the ’90s and now resides in Erie in a Victorian house, which he jokes isn’t haunted... “yet.” In the last decade, he’s written books that have topped the USA Today and Denver Post best-seller lists, and has won multiple accolades, including three Colorado Book Awards.

Before Wilson’s epiphanous writing moment in class, he was in the business world and had never been interested in writing. But after that first story came to him, he followed his gut and knew it wasn’t just a fluke. He quickly learned about the world of publishing and found an agent. Four books were rejected before his first book, Final Crossing, came out in 2012.

Most of Wilson’s novels live in the psychological thriller realm, each a stand-alone story that varies wildly from the others.

Sometimes his ideas appear to him, other times they stem from his daily life and even true crime, like his last book, Mister Tender’s Girls, which drew from the Slender Man stabbing in Wisconsin.

Conflict is the main lure for Wilson. He says thrillers provide the opportunity to put characters in peculiar circumstances that then push for character development.

“I’m very intrigued with the idea of taking regular everyday peo-

ple and putting them in situations that are beyond their ability to cope with and see what happens,” Wilson says. “I love to take someone who would be perceived as weak and see what would have to be done to make them come out and become strong. Sometimes they never become strong. Sometimes they fail.”

Over the years, Wilson still utilizes the same style he did when he first began.

When inspiration strikes, he follows the trail, letting it guide him to find the story.

“I kind of think of an opening scene, and I have no idea what the context of the scene is or who these people are or why they’re doing what they’re doing. I just think it’s a cool scene,” Wilson says.

“And then I spend the rest of the book trying to answer those questions.”

With The Dead Girl in 2A, Wilson was drawn to the idea of strangers meeting on a plane. But what if they knew each other viscerally? What would happen? What could happen?

“What would I say if that were me? How weird would it get before it got too weird?” Wilson asks. “I just loved writing that scene and [figuring out] how these people know each other.”

As Wilson wrote the scene, the woman confesses that she’s on her way to the Colorado mountains to commit suicide. Suddenly, Wilson’s story had drama and conflict.

“Now what does that do to this relationship that started three hours earlier? Is there responsibility involved? And if so, what is that?

Now their relationship has stakes,” he says.

This is the first time Wilson has used Colorado as a prominent location in his books. He usually gravitates toward places he isn’t familiar with, but when the story called for a mysterious location, Wilson chose the Maroon Bells.

“I knew I wanted to have one of the locations in the book be kind of mystical, like the island in the TV show Lost, whether it was true mysticism or just the appearance of that, I wanted there to be that special element,” he says. “The mountains of Colorado have that.

They’re kind of beautiful and scary at the same time. ... You can get lost very easily in a good way and a bad way, and it can happen in moments. You can create fear very easily, about as easily as you can create joy. I like that contrast.”

Wilson uses this tension throughout the book, as the characters frequently struggle against their minds, trying to decipher what they actually remember. Repressed memory is a common theme in Wilson’s books, but in The Dead Girl in 2A he wanted to take a I

deeper dive into the phenomenon, exploring lost childhood memories.

“There’s something fascinating about memory; [sometimes] it’s a cage that won’t open,” he says. “Your own mind, you can’t escape out of it. That can either be sublime or horrifying.”

The topic hits home with Wilson, who lost his dad to early onset Alzheimer’s. While The Dead Girl in 2A doesn’t deal directly with Wilson’s past, he says it’s one of his most personal and emotional books.

“I have themes of life and death and what it means to be happy and have memory,” he says. “I wanted it to be an emotional book with tension and [to be] scary but, to some degree, uplifting.”

Throughout all of his books, one of Wilson’s biggest goals is to keep the reader surprised. He fights against any story that feels predictable, straying away from classic tropes in favor of nuanced characters.

“I’d rather have someone say this book was too unbelievable, but at least it was different. I’d [prefer] that than someone who thinks it’s a good book but thinks it’s formulaic,” he says. “That’s what I’m attracted too, when I’m watching a TV series or something. Like, ‘Woah, that’s out there. I hadn’t thought of that before.’”

His writing style helps him achieve this goal. Wilson doesn’t like to plan his stories, instead preferring to see where the story takes him, even if it’s completely unexpected.

“I’ve had a book where all of a sudden this person [needs to] die, and I don’t know why, I just want to kill them, and they were a major character,” Wilson says. “But what if this person died right now? What does that do for the rest of the story? So I just wrote it in, and it opened my eyes. Like wow, [there are] so many interesting implications of doing that.

“And sometimes it doesn’t work,” he continues. “But that’s the fun part, throwing that stuff in there and trying to be as wild as possible with your ideas and seeing what feels right.”

He’s honed his skills over the years, and just like every writer, some days are harder than others. Wilson acknowledges there are times writing feels like “data entry,” with the singular task of just getting words on a page. But he always has faith the story will reveal itself.

arah Jarosz always stood out in a crowd even when she was a tiny 12-year-old kid standing on the big stage at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. She delivered a blistering rendition of Bill Monroe’s “Blue Moon of Kentucky” as a side-ofstage tweener between the major acts.

Amazed at her intensity, I tracked her down backstage and met her parents.

She did not talk like a precocious child, another cute talented picker who would fade from the business with time. She sounded more like fiddler Marc O’Connor, mandolinist Chris Thile and other teenage phenoms I’ve interviewed. They know their path early on.

“I always felt that to learn directly from my heroes was crucial,” Jarosz, now 28, says in a recent interview.

She attended the Rockygrass Academy in Lyons — the adult part, not the kids’ camp. “Here was this little girl and (mandolin legend) Mike Marshall was my teacher. He never treated me like a kid. He treated me like a musician and I really appreciated it. Playing with people on that level prodded me to improve,” she says.

Jarosz put out her first solo album before she graduated from high school and began touring as a solo artist. She won two Grammys in 2017 for Best Folk Album for Undercurrent, as well as Best American Roots Performance.

She returns to Colorado to perform with Sara Watkins and Aiofe O’Donovan in the band I’m With Her, July 27 at Rockygrass. I’m With Her also joins songwriting legend John Prine and the Colorado Symphony July 28 at Red Rocks.

I saw Nickel Creek when Watkins, her brother Sean and friend Chris Thile were barely teenagers. They played Telluride’s Family Tent but it was obvious that these were future Grammy-winning performers trapped in children’s bodies. I didn’t see Aoife O’Donovan until she appeared in Colorado as a college student with Crooked Still. Deeply rooted in traditional folk, she is a great singer and a player pushing the envelope of acoustic music.

The harmonic convergence of Jarosz, Watkins and O’Donovan organically occurred when they decided to do an impromptu workshop at the 2014 Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Beforehand the trio decided to practice a little in a bathroom because it had good acoustics.

first time we sang together. The vocal blend was the thing that alerted us that it was special. The harmonies were very natural, intuitive and magical,”Jarosz says.

The name I’m With Her was just a casual moniker that stuck because it suggests the collaborative chemistry they enjoy. Also, frankly, Jarosz, O’Donovan and Watkins sounded like a TV law firm.

I’m With Her is Jarosz’ first band experience. “With my solo projects I’ve always had bandmates, but this is the first time I had that camaraderie and someone to share the load with,” she says.

Gathered around one mic, the three take turns being the “lead” singer, backup singers and backup band. Each is also spotlighted alone singing their own songs. As Jarosz explains it, this super group is all in service to the song, not the ego.

“We decided to be our own band. It was good for us to develop as a trio with no backing. It really solidified us and I’ve learned a lot. I’m a better supporter onstage,” she says. Each member put aside their solo focus for this project.

The result is the glorious debut album, 2018’s See You Around (Rounder) and ear-grabbing live appearances I

across the country and on public radio’s Live From Here. The tight, emotionally charged harmonies get applied to their original tunes and some stellar covers.

Check out their versions of the Gillian Welch-penned “Hundred Miles,” Vampire Weekend’s “Hannah Hunt” and the funky folk reimagining of Adele’s “Send My Love (To Your New Lover).”

“To be in this band is very full circle for me,” Jarosz says. “A huge part of me becoming a musician was listening to Nickel Creek and Chris Thile’s mandolin.

Crooked Still was a massive influence on me.”

The band, unfortunately, is an anomaly in bluegrass and folk, a successful group composed of women musicians who are accomplished singers and songwriters. As gifted multi-instrumentalists — violin, guitar, ukelele, banjo, mandolin and keyboards among them — each has heard the “you play pretty good for a girl” line.

The upcoming Colorado shows give Jarosz pause to ponder. “We have devoted ourselves to this project for two years and taken it everywhere. These will be some of our last shows for a while,” she says. Afterwards, she, Watkins and O’Donovan return to their solo recording and performing careers.

“It’s all about constant work. To keep creating, keep making music,” Jarosz says.

Jarosz says the trio has intentionally taken a slow, patient long view of the band. “Our hope for the band is that it will always exist and we’ll always come back to it.”

usic Director Peter Oundjian will conduct the final two weeks of the Colorado Music Festival 2019 season, with four orchestral concerts July 25–Aug. 3.

Oundjian’s programs feature music by Berlioz, Mozart and Beethoven, among others, ending with Mahler’s massive Third Symphony for the season finale concert (Aug. 3). A number of internationally known soloists will be heard during the four concerts: cellist Kian Soltani will play Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1 (July 25 and 26); clarinetist Jörg Widmann will play Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto (July 28); and violinist Robert McDuffie will play Philip Glass’ Violin Concerto No. 1 (Aug. 1).

The performance of the Mahler symphony will include contributions from mezzo-soprano Janice ChandlerEteme, the St. Martin’s Festival Singers from Denver and the Boulder Children’s Chorale (Aug. 3).

The concerts July 25 and 26 — the last repeated pair of the summer — while not including music by Beethoven, are a continuation of the summer theme of “Beethoven’s Path to the Future.” The program ends with Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, a vivid and sometimes hallucinatory piece of program music written in 1830, only three years after Beethoven’s death.

“Nobody can believe how early (the Symphonie fantastique) was written,” Oundjian says. That is because Berlioz used the orchestra in new ways, to tell a story of obsession, a drug-fueled nightmare and madness, with vivid orchestral colors that had not been heard before.

Nevertheless, Oundjian believes that Beethoven’s harmonic and formal freedom in his last works opened the door for Berlioz to follow his wild imagination. “Berlioz, who was quite an eccentric, had a way of absorbing compositional techniques and sounds that made him able to

put his own stamp on a piece that is in many ways like a Beethoven late (string) quartet,” he says.

Sharing the program with Berlioz is a contemporary piece, Dust Devils

by Vivian Fung, and Soltani’s performance of Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto. Dust Devils “is an exciting piece,” Oundjian says. “It’s full of wonderful colors and textures, and a thrill to listen to.”

Oundjian does not yet know Soltani, but is looking forward to working with him. “He’s an extraordinary talent and a very intense player, which is what you need for (the Shostakovich concerto).”

The performance July 28 concludes the two-concert “Magnificent Mozart Mini-Festival,” with performances of Mozart’s early Divertimento in D major for strings, K. 136, the “Jupiter” Symphony, No. 41 in C major, and the Clarinet Concerto, one of the composer’s last pieces.

Widmann, the concerto soloist, is known in Europe as a clarinetist, conductor and composer. Although he will be teaching in the eastern U.S. earlier, he will return from Germany specifically for the one concert in Boulder. “He’s absolutely incredible,” Oundjian says.

“We’re very close — we love to make music. I was surprised when he said he would come, because he’s so busy. We haven’t played together since 2014, and he said five years is long enough. He’s coming all the way out to do it, and I can’t wait.”

generations of composers. Titled “Beethoven’s Path to Minimalism,” the program suggests parallels between Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony and the music of Philip Glass, who is represented by his First Violin Concerto.

“There are a lot of minimalist qualities to the ‘Pastoral’ Symphony,” Oundjian says. “The first movement’s a great example, [with] repetitions of little rhythmic gestures. You could describe minimalism as taking a series of notes that become a unit, and play them with repetition. Then you have a shift in harmony that takes you to a different level, and then maybe a new cell.”

Oundjian sees this process operating in Beethoven’s symphony, as well as the music of Philip Glass. “I thought it would be great to do the Beethoven, followed by a really good minimalist piece, the Glass concerto, which is incredibly well written,” he says.

The festival finale Aug. 3 features one piece, Mahler’s Third Symphony. Like most of Mahler’s large works, the symphony creates its own musical universe. “It’s about the different aspects of the world of creation,” Oundjian says.

“There are places in the world where you almost see the movement that brought the mountains up and the rocks tumbling down. The (first movement) gives us that feeling, the beginning of creation, just absolute magnificence. Then he goes into little interludes — ‘What the flowers tell me,’ ‘What the animals in the forest tell me,’ ‘What man tells me,’ ‘What the angels tell me.’ Finally (the last movement) is ‘What love tells me.’ It is intensely human and warm and full of love, and full of care and tenderness. Perhaps it’s all ‘what spirituality tells me.’ It’s an extraordinary experience to listen to that.”

After his passing in 1999, the station renamed the event in his memory. This familyfriendly mini-festival of bluegrass and Americana music offers fresh mountain air, dazzling acoustic music and great food in a spectacular outdoor setting. Enjoy smoky Texas barbecue with all the trimmings, side dishes, home-baked pies, cookies and refreshing beverages. This event benefits volunteer-powered, listener-supported KGNU. ON THE BILL: ‘The Lion King.’ Opens July 19, everywhere.

T

he Lion King, Disney’s latest computer-generated remake, isn’t like the rest. Yes, the story — Hamlet meets Bambi with a touch of Jungle Book — is intact, as are the memorable Elton John and Tim Rice songs. But The Lion King is different. From the first delicate images of the African savannah at dawn to Noah’s herd making its way to Pride Rock, 2019’s Lion King is a massive leap forward in computer-generated images. It all looks real, but not too real: a photorealistic landscape that manages to dodge the uncanny valley. And in those brief opening moments, today’s rendition of The Lion King is Walt Disney’s dream come true.

Let’s jump back: In the late 1930s, Disney was hell-bent on bringing Felix Salten’s novel, Bambi, A Life in the Woods, to the screen. But, how to create the illusion of a living, breathing, talking deer through a series of hand-drawn pictures?

Tests were made en masse, and live deer were brought into the studio so the animators could study their habits — a butcher even dissected one so the artists could study the deer’s muscular structure.

Why? Disney wanted realism. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves had set box office records, Pinocchio pushed cell animation to new heights and Fantasia brought abstract art, music and animation together in a massive swirl of ars gratia artis. Realistic animation was the next frontier, and realism is what Disney demanded.

It was Marc Davis — an essential figure in the development of animation — who cracked the code: Disney asked for realism, but he meant believability. Bambi didn’t have to look like a deer, he just had to behave like a deer.

The results were stunning. Combining technical animation never before seen with cartoonish innocence and the occasional moment of emotional abstraction, Bambi became one for the ages, and its triumphs were far-reaching. Even 1994’s The Lion King owes Bambi a lot. And not just in story, but in technique and execution. You believe Mufasa’s strength, Scar’s cunning and that a flower petal with Simba’s scent could float across the Serengeti to Rafiki’s tree.

And you believe every computer-generated frame of Jon Favreau’s 2019 The Lion King. That is until the lions start talking three minutes in.

Jeff Nathanson’s script sticks close to the ’94 film — the changes are minimal, and the additions inconsequential. The only difference is an emphasis on realistic images free of abstraction and creativity. Worse, the animals’ mouths still flap in an attempt to make language look natural. Some look like they are constantly mumbling, others, Timon in particular, spend so much time talking in close-up you fear a human face might push through digital eyes, teeth and hair in some sort of Cronenbergian horror show. What would’ve Uncle Walt made of that?

The Lion King is a soulless attempt to capitalize on mislaid nostalgia. The animation is a half-hearted stab at trying to bring something new to the party, but it just reinforces Davis’ epiphany all those years ago: It’s believability, not reality, that makes the magic work.

The meat was accompanied by hand-rolled grape leaves, hummus adorned with olive oil, pickles and whole chickpeas, and tangy baba ghanoush garnished with crispy bell pepper. Tabbouleh salad with large doses of parsley brightened the whole dish, which was served with hot, fresh, whole wheat pita bread.

Global foodies converge on the Front Range for Slow Food Nations

oodies, chefs, culinary artists and food justice advocates from around the globe are making a beeline to Denver this weekend.

Slow Food Nations (SFN) is the coolest, most prestigious food gathering in the United States. Even though it has been anchored here for three years, locals still seem unaware. We haven’t really discovered the festival’s discrete and tasty charms yet, or we think SFN is a pricey affair like the annual Aspen Food & Wine.

I hear a lot of reasons why people haven’t attended the first two years of SFN. Here is why you should get a taste of the events in Larimer Square July 19-21.

SFN is a food festival featuring cooking demos, tastings, free family activities, one-of-a-kind food block parties and speakers like culinary legend Alice Waters, fermentation star Sandor Katz and local notables like chefs Caroline Glover and Alex Seidel. The focus is squarely on providing sustainable fare for everyone everywhere.

If you love sampling new foods, hang out at the free Taste Marketplace July 20-21 spanning four blocks. More than 80 makers are sampling their goods, including local producers such as Picaflor and Teakoe.

There are also beverage stations and spots selling international bites.

Do you want to delve deeper? There are discussions about how to combat the exploitation of farm workers, lack of access to land and healthy food, and issues involving race, class and gender disparities in the food industry.

You can attend discussions on saving indigenous traditional foods, guerrilla gardens, schoolsupported agriculture, and how cooking seasonally can create environmental change. There are ticketed sampling events that explore local cider, bean-to-bar chocolate and coastal Mexican cuisine.

“Good Jewish cooks render chicken fat (schmaltz) from raw chicken skin by placing it in a cast-iron pan and heating till the fat runs out and the skin turns brown and crispy. The rendered fat is poured into a jar and used in matzoh balls and chopped liver. Fried chicken skin or gribens (pronounced gree-bens), is best eaten hot from the pan, sprinkled with salt.”

ON THE MENU: WATERMELON JUICE Now is the time when the watermelons get big, cheap and sweet. Get one and turn the whole thing into one of summer’s transcendent joys: Fresh watermelon juice. Just run melon chunks through your blender, strain out the pulp, and chill. Fresh watermelon juice is great with spicy Indian or Thai fare. Needless to say, it makes a lovely cocktail with local gin. I freeze watermelon juice cubes and then pour lemon seltzer over them.

TASTE OF THE WEEK The best pan-fried paht kee-mao or “drunken noodles” I have tasted in ages are served at Dancing Noodle Thai Restaurant, a tiny strip mall eatery in Parker. The charming staff craft something rare from scratch: thick, wide rice noodles that soak up the Thai basilaccented sauce like a dumpling. Fair warning: You’ll just hurt yourself ordering this dish or any of the curries at their Thai Fire or Burning Inferno heat levels.

Know your brew: IPA

A beer by any other name just doesn’t sell as much

hat’s in a name?

Historically speaking, it’s India pale ale partly because English colonialists craved a bitter beverage to pair with India’s spicy curries — try it, it’s phenomenal — and partly for marketing purposes back in England. The moniker “India pale ale” first appeared in print in 1835 but it would be years before the style was standardized or developed into anything resembling what you’d find in taprooms today.

Jump ahead to 1975, and Anchor Brewing in San Francisco rejuvenated the hoppy ale with Liberty Ale and used copious amounts of Centennial hops to give the beer a bitter kick. Two hundred years after Paul Revere’s midnight ride, the American-style IPA was born.

Both Liberty Ale and England’s best known IPA, Worthington’s White Shield, were a celebration of hops — the one ingredient that binds and ties IPAs of various shades across time and space. By 2005, IPA had become the most entered category at the Great American Beer Festival, a throne it has yet to relinquish and probably won’t anytime soon.

Nowadays, you’d be hard-pressed not to find an IPA on tap at your local brewery.

Even those dedicated to lagers brew one or feature a guest one because it just makes good business sense; Wibby Brewing and Prost Brewing feature hop-fortified IPLs (India pale lagers) in lieu of their aromatic ale counterparts.

But those are the outliers; most don’t just pour IPA, they are flush with them: black IPA, red IPA, white IPA, wheat IPA, rye IPA, Belgian IPA, West Coast IPA, New England-style IPA, mountain IPA, imperial IPA, triple IPA and session IPA. Avery Brewing even makes an activated IPA, brewed with sodium and potassium, and VisionQuest Brewing has a coconut IPA — chewy and fantastic. With mind-boggling permutations and combinations, there is seemingly no end to what an IPA can be or do.

Furthermore, all these hoppy variations on a theme seem to lead to some confusion in the marketplace. Average drinkers don’t know the difference between ale and lager, let alone one IPA from the next. In this regard, many have come to identify IPA as synonymous with craft beer. The “I” may stand for India historically, but in today’s taprooms, IPA might as well be independent pale ale.

Need proof? Head over to Boulder’s West End Tavern for Jul-IPA, a summer celebration of America’s favorite craft beer style. All month long, West End has been rotating through varied versions of Colorado IPAs, from Odell Brewing’s bracingly bright IPA (a true classic) to purveyors of the hazy/juicy variety: 4 Noses Brewing and Crooked Stave Artisanal Beer Project. Wibby’s aforementioned IPL will be on tap, arguably the most modern version of the style.

IPAs are pouring every day at West End, but its rooftop grand finale party is Sunday, July 28, 1-4 p.m. Tickets are $35 and include beer, BBQ, live music, an auction and tastings of Breckenridge Bourbon. Details at thewestendtavern.com.

ummer is a parade of fruits. First come the berries — the strawberries, blueberries and finally the raspberries — followed by the stone fruits like cherries, peaches, apricots and whatnot. My friend Sarah has a certain combination of grains that she calls by the unfortunate name of “gruel.” Her gruel is not the kind you might expect to be served at the local prison camp. It’s thick and interesting, with a complex, nutty flavor, and it’s great beneath fruit from breakfast to dessert.

Something with which to eat berries and cream

A surprising treat makes use of abundant summer fruit

by Ari LeVaux “I like it because it sounds like Dickens,” Sarah told me, knowing full well her grains aren’t gruel.

Porridge and gruel are two points along a spectrum of boiled grains that can be cooked and served with, among other things, berries and fruit. Porridge is thicker, and has a better name, derived from an old-world style of one-pot cookery called potage. Porridge has a homey, comforting sound that takes you to a world where breakfast is just right.

Gruel, on the other hand, is not a pretty word for food. The sound itself is unappetizing and rolls off the tongue like wet cement. As the inspiration for the word “grueling,” it implies 42

that eating a bowl of the stuff is some kind of ordeal.

Whatever we call it, the good news is gruel is great with strawberries and yogurt, and it works in savory dishes too.

Sarah’s gruel is on the thick side of porridge, and more like a pot of cooked grains than a liquid. It has no business being called gruel, but I suppose when you have as many glass jars filled with seeds as she does, you can call your potage Ahab the Sailor. But in hopes of never making you read the word gruel again, I’ll just call today’s recipe potage, short for Sarah’s Potage Process.

Based on a mixture of quinoa and steel-cut oats, Sarah tweaks her potage with smaller amounts of other grains like sunflower, hemp and chia seeds. It forms a thick matrix of grains that are not overcooked, with the right amount of resistance to the tooth.

There is a long tradition of mixing grains, fruit and some dairy product, from cobbler with ice cream, to granola and fruit with milk, to bread with butter and jam. Even a berry cheesecake, with a crust based on finely ground wheat, would qualify.

Potage deserves a place on this pantheon as well.

When putting together a plate of fruit, cream and grains, the sweet and sour levels are crucial. If you have a sauce like chokecherry syrup, that’s ideal. Otherwise, make something with rhubarb, or pie cherries.

I usually cook my potage unsweetened, so the sweetness I add at serving time is the sweetness we get. Everyone likes a little sweetness — no big surprise there. But the tartness is an unexpected game-changer, making the whole dish more interesting and balanced.

tion in the same amount of time, each arriving at a place that complements the other. Quinoa cooked to this point would not hold together alone, but the steel cut oats add their binding, moisturizing, some might say slimy soluble fibers, forming an invisible mortar, while the quinoa sucks up the excess, drying out the oats.

A pot of this gruel holds together with the ease of a pot of rice, and the leftovers don’t harden into a solid mass the next day — at least in my version, where I leave out Sarah’s chia and sunflower seeds, keep her hemp seeds, and add sesame seeds. This mix of nutty earth tones sets up a delicious, interesting contrast with the fruit, cream and especially that tartness.

The ways to doctor any such mixture toward sweet and creamy are many, but it can be served savory as well. My favorite is dressed with soy sauce, toasted sesame oil and minced green onion or scape, served room temperature.

Potage, pottage, porridge and other versions of the historical dish upon which this meal is based, is the original one-pot meal. Some renditions include beans, meat and bones, while others are sweet from the start. But the rules of this ancient game have remained steady since long before they were ever written down. Cook the pottage in a pot, slowly. Don’t burn it. Add water when necessary. But not too much, unless you want gruel.

This rendition contains sesame and hemp seeds, but you should definitely explore ways to augment the quinoa/oat base, and find your own grueling groove, whatever that may be.

A 4-quart pot’s worth, about 10 small servings Potage Base 1 cup steel cut oats 1 cup quinoa (I prefer red quinoa, for color) 4 cups water (with more at the ready) 1 tablespoon untoasted sesame seeds 1 tablespoon raw, shelled hemp seeds pinch of salt Berries and Cream option 1 scoop per serving of creamy material, like whipped cream or heavy yogurt 1 cup berries, cherries, apricots, peaches, apples or whatever is ripe and sweet A sweet and tart syrup like rhubarb, cherry or chokecherry Add the potage base ingredients to a heavy-bottomed pot, and bring to a boil.

Bring back to a simmer and keep it there for about 20 minutes, until the grains have all swollen and softened to the point where they feel good to chew. The water may disappear before you get there, so be prepared to add more. Don’t over-stir, but keep track of what is happening on the bottom of the pot. When the grains are good to chew, turn the heat to low and slowly let the water cook off. Turn off the heat and let it cool to room temperature, and store in the fridge.

Serve room temperature or chilled with berries and creamy material.

Don’t let the components of this culinary structure mix until they reach your mouth. Just as you wouldn’t stir a plate of cheesecake into a sloppy mess before eating it, a dish of berry potage is best served deconstructed, drenched in a sweet, tart syrup, of course.

tudying marijuana is tough in this country. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is the exclusive supplier of cannabis used for federallyapproved studies. efits of cannabis and its components — unless it’s trying to capitalize on patents from marijuana-derived medications, of course. Like Epidiolex, an FDA-approved CBD-based medication for the treatment of rare forms of epilepsy.

You know CBD as the trendy cannabinoid purported to relieve anxiety, pain, cancer symptoms, acne and a slew of other serious and not so serious ailments. All that and it’s not psychoactive.

Yet with federal prohibition on marijuana and a federally-funded agency tasked with providing pot to federally-approved studies on cannabis, there’s been some pretty whack research out there about cannabis and cannabinoids, like a recent CBD study by researchers at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

To make a long research paper short, this team of scientists force-fed mice CBD, ranging from a “low” dosage of 246 mg/kg up to a shockingly high dosage of 2460 mg/kg.

For reference, the maximum recommended human dosage of Epidiolex is 20 mg/kg.

Within 24 hours, livers ballooned and failed and mice died, leading the researchers to claim that CBD is not nearly so safe as it’s been made out to be.

But some folks are questioning the validity of the research.

“The Little Rock study made no mention of humans, which is a hugely important distinction,” wrote nonprofit group Project CBD in a rebuttal to the University of Arkansas research.

“Moreover, in the real world CBD consumers are not ingesting 0.25 percent of their body weight — the maximal dose that [the University of Arkansas team] used in their study of liver toxicity.”

The researchers claim their dosage was based on allometric scaling, which takes into consideration the weight and body mass index of research animals.

Writing for the website Merry Jane, Randy Robinson, a Denver-based writer who studied cannabinoid science while getting a degree in molecular biology, says that with allometric

scaling we’d expect to see a dose “somewhere in the range of 0.3 mg/kg” for a mouse.

“The researchers instead dosed the mice on 0, 246, 738, or 2460mg/kg,” Robinson says. “Yeah, you read that correctly: at the higher end, the mice got 120 times the recommended dose for a full-grown human being.

“So, no shit the mice got liver damage and died.”

It’s not news that CBD can wreak havoc on the liver. During the FDA’s public hearing on CBD in late May, plenty of doctors and toxicologists testified that CBD could cause health complications for some people, particularly at high doses. David Bienenstock, writing for the website Leafly, makes a compelling argument about testimony from GW Pharmaceuticals, the company that developed Epidiolex. During testimony, GW representative Alice Mead argued for a “strong regulatory framework.” “[W]hat that really means is GW Pharmaceuticals wants a regulatory framework for CBD so strong that only they can surmount it,” Bienenstock writes.

“And so here’s the thought experiment,” he continues. “You’re GW Pharmaceuticals, and you’ve invested heavily in both time and money to create a patented CBD drug. Now you’re about to go to market, and want to make a huge return on that investment without having to compete with CBD hamburgers and truck stop snake oil.

“So what’s the biggest threat to your bottom line — that people think CBD is too dangerous, or that people think CBD is too safe?”

Gene may increase risk of marijuana ‘addiction’

This is a significant finding, because CHRNA2 is not one of the main receptors to which THC and CBD bind. Those are dubbed CB1 and CB2.

According to an article posted on the Genetic Literacy Project’s website, nicotinic acetylcholine receptors are much more abundant and widespread than the two cannabinoid receptors. Each of the CHRNA receptors has five parts, with a different gene encoding each of the parts.

Mutations in the CHRNA2 gene have been associated with a type of epilepsy and with nicotine dependence. The new work found an association with cannabis use disorder as well.

The mutation that the researchers identified consists of a variation in a single nucleotide or “letcannabis use disorder and 301,041 controls. ter” in the CHRNA2 gene. There are seven or eight criteria (depending on how you count) that are used to define cannabis use disorder. Here’s the eight-criteria version of the list: 1) Craving marijuana 2) Great effort to get marijuana 3) Problems with work, school, home life due to marijuana use 4) Stopping other pleasurable activities 5) Increasing intake over time 6) Attempting to cut down or stop 7) Continuing even if recognizing social problems and endangered health 8) Withdrawal symptoms If you experience two of these in the course of a year (or three if you don’t experience withdrawal) after having used pot as few as six times a year, you can get a cannabis use disorder diagnosis hung on you.

This suggests that a lot of people who use marijuana infrequently (seven times a year, for example) or in moderation are included in the cannabis use disorder cohort — possibly enough to affect the results of the study.

Still, the finding that a genetic variation might make marijuana use risky for about 10 percent of users, but not for the other 90 percent, is a big deal. For one thing, it opens the possibility of developing drugs that counter the effects of the CHRNA2 mutation in those who have it.

Perhaps more important, it means that it might be possible to develop a genetic test that would tell people whether they could use pot without the risk of developing a dependency or addiction.

And that in turn would destroy the rational for using prohibition as a strategy for fighting marijuana abuse and relegate it to the category of medieval medicine, where it has always belonged.
