Downside of natural gas (Re: “Alternative transportation gaining speed,” Boulderganic column, July 7.) Elizabeth Miller’s article on the issues of the natural gas bill H.R. 1380 did not address one major issue.

Encouraging the use of natural gas also encourages the practice of drilling using “fracking” techniques. “Fracking” adds toxins to the ground, which eventually poisons the aquifer. Additionally, the release of natural gas from shale deposits means that the natural gas bubbles up to the surface. It seems to me that breaking up the shale layers of ground under our feet may destabilize large areas. I hope that before rushing into this “too good to be true” technology our legislators do due-diligence research.

Circumcision facts (Re: “Circumcision revisited,” letters, July 7, and “To cut or not to cut,” Uncensored, June 23.) First of all, Craig Zalk mentions his own “facts” regarding circumcision that seem to be out of nowhere. The real fact of the matter is that the foreskin is not a birth defect. It has evolved over time to serve many functions perfectly without much attention or special care. If you look around,

you’ll see that all mammals have one form or another of foreskin that serves their life and sexual habits perfectly.

American boys don’t need immediate surgical correction at birth! After only a few generations, Americans have completely forgotten that this all started to diminish sexual pleasure, and they were taught to think circumcision is normal and necessary. Cutting off a very specialized healthy organ that is working perfectly is not normal. We stopped doing “routine” tonsillectomies and appendectomies years ago.

est Virginia’s Upper Big Branch coal mine was a disaster even before it exploded into an underground hell last year, killing 29 miners.

A new investigative report by federal safety inspectors found that this mine — owned by the enormously profitable Massey Energy Corporation — was literally a man-made hellhole. Top executives intentionally hid deadly, dangerous safety problems from regulators, failed to maintain (and sometimes actually disabled) safety systems and aggressively pushed a mining ethic of profit over safety, intimidating and firing those who complained about hazards.

What we have here is another grotesque example of America’s “de-reg follies.” Corporate lobbyists and right-wing ideologues have yoked our nation to an ongoing, corrupt policy of accepting worker deaths as a necessary cost of doing business. Although Massey

they are — but they also don’t know anything different. Many men, however, are unhappy that a part of their body was amputated without their consent, and also many have experienced adult complications because of being cut “too tight” or from irregular cuts. The vast majority of the world’s men are intact, and they are not having the “problems” that circumcision is supposed to solve.

Americans were intact until only 100 or so years ago, and many more young Americans are intact again. It is illegal to cut baby girls, and nearly every American is appalled at the idea.

Democrats have cynically blocked passage of tougher mine-safety laws that would stop the murderous greed of coal profiteers.

Fed up with this, Gene Jones, whose twin brother Dean was killed in the Massey disaster, says he’s going to Washington to confront each one of these political scoundrels. “If you continue to wait [on Congress],” he says, “it’s going to happen again. It’s time to do something. I’m just going to speak out the best I can and be honest about it. And make them listen to me.”

A modest proposal for ending the budget impasse

I

n his weekly radio address this past Saturday, President Obama called on Republicans and Democrats to make “political sacrifices” to break the budget impasse and prevent the collapse of civilization as we know it.

I have a modest proposal for that.

It will require Republicans and Democrats to make painful political sacrifices alright, and to add insult to injury, it will require them to throw core principles, values and beliefs under the bus. Which is a good thing, because it was Republicans’ and Democrats’ mindless adherence to party principles, values and beliefs that resulted in the passage of the two most financially reckless and irresponsible pieces of legislation in the history of the American republic — the Bush tax cuts and ObamaCare.

Here’s the deal: 1. Repeal ObamaCare. All 906 pages of it.

2. Repeal the Bush tax cuts. All of them. Not just those for the rich.

3. In recognition of the fact that the recovery is showing signs of stalling out and unemployment remains high, the Bush tax cuts will be phased out over three years.

4. In recognition of the fact that the

federal government has been spending like a drunken sailor and running up deficits that threaten to debase the dollar and undermine the economy, federal spending will be capped at fiscal 2010 levels for three years — defense included, unless Congress passes a formal declaration of war against someone.

5. And, of course, the debt ceiling would be raised.

Since the names “New Deal” and “Fair Deal” are taken, call this one the “Big Deal.”

The Big Deal would be nothing if not big.

Getting rid of ObamaCare would eliminate up to $3 trillion in federal spending over the next decade. Getting rid of the Bush tax cuts would result in trillions of dollars in new revenue over the same period; precisely how much isn’t clear, but the pre-Bush tax code was producing enough revenue not only to balance the federal budget, but also to allow serious consideration of paying off the national debt.

So the Big Deal would be a giant step toward re-asserting national fiscal responsibility.

At the same time, corporations use their vast financial resources to buy and sell politicians, not only helping those who are sympathetic to their causes to be elected, but also influencing them via lobbying efforts to vote this way or that way when it comes to important legislation that affects every human being in the country. Not only does money change hands — hard money, soft money, funny money — but the revolving door between Congress and

Corporate America moves quickly, ensuring a steady supply of politicians who have special sympathy for the industries they were once a part of — and will be a part of again. Dick Cheney and Halliburton are but one glaring example of this. During his time as vice president — he left the company in 2000 with a multi-million-dollar severance package — Halliburton earned billions in exclusive government contracts.

Think of the long list of big corporations that have caused public harm: Halliburton (pollution, Deepwater Horizon), BP (Deepwater Horizon explosion), the Wall Street banking industry (financial collapse of the world), Massey Energy (29 killed in mine explosion), Exxon (Exxon Valdez disaster), Enron (loss of millions in employees’ retirement funds) Monsanto (Frankenfood, plants that can’t reproduce, Roundup-resistant superweeds)…

One could go on and on. In fact, it might be easier to make a list of corporations that haven’t abused the public in some way because it would be shorter.

The quest for profit has become so rabid, so heartless, so obsessive that it encourages corporations to behave like instruments of rapine and pillage.

Good people have tried to rein in corporate abuses, by limiting the amount of cash that these organizations can spend while trying to buy candidates and elections. But now the Supreme Court tells us that corporations have the same constitutional rights that you and I enjoy as human beings — and that money is a form of free speech.

So now corporations get to have it both ways. When it comes to crime and punishment, the individuals who make up a corporation can’t be thrown in prison. But when it comes to participating in our elections, they have the same rights as you and I. Except that you and I don’t have billions of dollars to ensure that politicians hear our voices.

It took a long time for our political process to devolve into its current despicable state, and it will take a long time and a great deal of focused work on the part of ordinary non-corporate people — real human beings — to turn our troubled system around. It will start with efforts like that undertaken by Boulder Move to Amend, and it will end with celebration when a new amendment is added to the living body of our Constitution stating that corporations are only businesses and that money is only money.

The right to vote for those who represent us in local, state and federal elected offices is one of the most fundamental to our republic. Let’s hope members of Boulder City Council have the mettle to defend it.

bility — because striking the deal would require both parties to ditch some of their most tenaciously held (and wrong-headed) values and principles for the good of the country. Also, passage would re-introduce the art of compromise into American political life.

Could the Big Deal actually be struck?

Granted, a lot of Democrats view health care not merely as a plank in the party platform, but as political theology.

And a lot of Republicans feel the same way about tax cuts.

Both factions would be outraged at a compromise that offered up their sacred cows as sacrifices in the national interest. On the other hand, each faction views the other’s holy bovines as abominations and unclean — and purging the world of them as a religious duty.

So while each side would be asked to repudiate a core value, each would also be asked to do so to rid the world of the other party’s core value. So maybe a deal is possible after all.

Moreover, a deal might not be as politically hard to achieve as one might assume.

The reason both of them passed was because the Republicans’ belief in tax cuts and Democrats’ belief in health care verges on the theological.

Firefighter fundraiser A silent auction benefit to help the Four Mile Fire District replace the fire engine that was destroyed in the September 2010 Fourmile Fire will be held on Friday, July 15, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Millennium Hotel’s Friday Afternoon Club in Boulder.

The Fourmile Fire destroyed 169 structures, and the fire district lost one of its fire stations, one of its engines, a lot of equipment and all of its records.

District Chief Bret Gibson says it will cost anywhere from $160,000 to $185,000 to rebuild the station, and nearly $500,000 to replace the engine and lost equipment.

Only a portion of the losses was covered by insurance.

City hosts Clean Marina celebration The City of Boulder will celebrate Boulder Reservoir’s Clean Marina certification at noon on Saturday, July 16, at the facility’s boathouse at 5565 N. 51st St. The event will feature a brief ceremony and flag-raising, followed by interactive educational activities and summer refreshments. A drawing will also be held to give away a 2012 Boulder Reservoir pass.

The Boulder Reservoir received Colorado’s first Clean Marina certification earlier this year under a new program aimed at protecting water quality and encouraging environmentally friendly boating and marina practices.

The certification was awarded by the Colorado Marina Association (CMA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to delivering the Clean Marinas Colorado Program and promoting clean boating on Colorado’s waterways.

Flood marker to be dedicated A dedication event for the Gilbert White Memorial Flood Level Marker will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, in Central Park, just east of the Broadway Bridge on the north side of Boulder Creek.

The marker is an 18-foot-tall LEDilluminated structure that shows the creek’s 50-year, 100-year, 500-year and Big Thompson flood levels. Gilbert White, who passed away in 2006, is known as the “Father of Floodplain Management.” He was Gustafson Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Geography at the University of Colorado, where he founded the Natural Hazards Center, which still functions within the CU Institute of Behavioral Science.

The structure was planned, designed and constructed by a committee of Gilbert’s colleagues, students, friends and family, who also helped raise funds for the marker with private contributions and fundraising events. The marker will be donated to the city and maintained by the Parks and Recreation Department.

Venus de Miles returns The fourth annual Venus de Miles, a road cycling event for women, will return to Boulder County on Sunday, Aug. 28.

The event is Colorado’s first and only all-women’s road bike ride and is a non-competitive cycling event open to women of all ages and ability levels.

Riders can choose from four fully supported courses, including a 33-mile, 51-mile, 67-mile and 100-mile routes.

The rides are followed by a festival that includes complimentary spa services, bike demos by Trek Women, a catered lunch and live music.

In 2010 1,790 women participated in the event, and organizers anticipate more riders this year.

The event raises funds for Greenhouse Scholars, a Boulder-based nonprofit that provides mentoring to high-performing students with minimal resources.

Longmont-Boulder trail section opens The Boulder County transportation and parks and open space departments, along with the City of Longmont, are opening the north segment of the Longmont-to-Boulder Regional Trail today, July 14.

The trail segment is nearly three miles long and stretches from the Lefthand Valley Grange Trailhead on North 83rd Street to the North 95th Street bridge at Lefthand Creek in Longmont. A map of the trail segment is available at bit.ly/boulderlong.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony with officials from Boulder County and Longmont will be held at 4:30 p.m. at the Lefthand Valley Grange Trailhead near 83rd Street and Niwot Road.

The joint project was funded by Longmont, a federal transportation grant awarded to Boulder County in 2007, and the countywide transportation sales tax approved by voters in 2001.

The project comprises the northernmost section of the planned 12-mile Longmont-to-Boulder Regional Trail that begins on the City of Boulder’s Cottonwood Trail and terminates at the Lefthand Greenway in Longmont.

Missing links at Jay Road and Lookout Road are in the planning phases, as is a new connection to the Boulder Reservoir underneath the Diagonal Highway.

City parks department lands award The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) recently selected the City of Boulder’s Parks and Recreation Department to receive the 2011 Barb King Environmental Stewardship Award.

The award recognizes parks and recreation agencies that have achieved excellence in environmental stewardship and exceptional service in the field, furthering the aims and values of parks and recreation.

NRPA will present the award publicly at a special reception at the association’s 2011 Congress & Exposition in Atlanta, Ga., on Nov. 2.

Forestry Sort Yard shifts Boulder County’s Forest Health Initiative has started its seasonal transfer of the county’s Community Forestry Sort Yard program from Nederland to Allenspark.

Because the county only has the resources and staff to operate one site at Boulder Weekly

a time, the two sites operate on alternate schedules each season.

The Nederland area sort yard, located at 286 Ridge Rd., closed for the summer on July 9.

The Boulder County Commissioners are reviewing proposals for reopening the Nederland area sort yard on a limited basis this year to accept additional slash and logs from county residents.

The Allenspark/Meeker Park sort yard, located on the Peak-to-Peak Highway just north of the BoulderLarimer county line, will open for log and slash disposal at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9 and remain open through Oct. 15. The Allenspark site will not accept logs infested by mountain pine beetles until the majority of beetle flight has ended in mid-September.

attle lines have been drawn in advance of Boulder City Council’s momentous July 19 meeting regarding a proposal from Xcel for a 20-year franchise agreement heavy on wind energy.

On that date, the council is expected to decide whether to put one or more ballot questions regarding Boulder’s energy future on the Nov. 1 ballot, and questions have been raised about whether one councilmember should be voting on that matter.

The debate is occurring across a spectrum of viewpoints, on issues ranging from renewable energy to economics. Some say municipalization could be a financial boon to the city, directing utility revenues to our own economy instead of to a major corporation, its coal-plant payments, regulatory costs and overpaid officers. Others say municipalization is fraught with risk and unknown costs.

Many are opposed to getting into bed with Xcel for such a long period of time. Others want more hard figures from Xcel about price modeling. Both sides say they want more time to evaluate the alternatives. Municipalization backers say they don’t want to commit without testing the open market.

Groups questioning municipalization include the Boulder Smart Energy Coalition. It has a conservative, proXcel bent, critics claim, pointing to its members’ ties to Xcel representatives and groups like the Boulder Economic Council, Boulder Tomorrow, the Boulder Chamber of Commerce and its Community Affairs Council.

“To me, this whole group is opposed to municipalization, and they’re all working to help Xcel get what they want,” says Ruth Blackmore, co-chair of PLAN Boulder County. “[Xcel Boulder Area Manager] Craig Eicher is on the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce and [chair of ] the Economic Council.”

The coalition’s chair, David Miller, says it’s misleading to characterize the group that way.

“We’re just getting started,” he says.

“Our goal is to be a very big tent and include as many voices as we can.”

Miller told Boulder Weekly that coalition members have a keen interest in achieving the city’s renewable energy goals, but most agree that going down the municipalization path seems risky 12 July 14, 2011

Boulder poised for Xcel energy parley

by Jefferson Dodge and costly, since Boulder could be on the hook not only for purchasing Xcel’s infrastructure but the company’s “stranded costs.” And, he says, that’s before the city tries to purchase any of its own renewable energy, which will be a challenge because the relatively small number of ratepayers will make it hard to get competitive rates, and the city may end up stuck buying “on the margins,” without the expertise to do so.

Miller and one of the coalition’s other members, Dan Cohen, are partners with Deputy Mayor Ken Wilson in the renewable energy consulting firm New Energy Development, LLC. Miller says that while New Energy Development has never been hired by Xcel, he acknowledges that the firm’s current specialty is solar gardens, which could be negatively affected by Boulder refusing to do business with Xcel. Miller says the solar gardens legislation passed in 2010 requires Xcel to accept applications for the program from ratepayers in its own territory, but if Boulder were to municipalize, the city might no longer be eligible for the program.

Still, he says the firm does not do much business in the city of Boulder.

“We’ve kind of shied away from Boulder because Ken’s a councilmember,” Miller explains.

He denies, however, that his financial interest in his energy consulting firm is the reason he is chairing the coalition.

“That’s false,” Miller says. “That’s not what brought me to this debate.”

Blackmore says Wilson should recuse himself if he stands to gain financially from an Xcel franchise.

“I think he’s working for his own benefit if he votes for Xcel, if he benefits from an Xcel franchise with the city,” Blackmore says. “The public would like to know more about Ken’s relationships in this business and the partners and their relationship to Xcel.”

Wilson was on vacation and did not return calls before press time.

Boulder Weekly also sat down with a handful of top Xcel officials last week

to ask some of the questions that the pro-municipalization crowd has been posing. (Eicher was not available for that meeting.)

Public Service Company of Colorado President and CEO David Eves told Boulder Weekly that “the cost of municipalization has been understated,” and that Boulder has a small window of opportunity to take advantage of a “buyer’s market” for low-cost wind energy. Xcel Managing Attorney Paula Connelly explains that a federal tax credit for wind ends at the conclusion of 2012, and Boulder would likely pay 30 percent to 40 percent more after that date.

When asked about the perception that the Xcel deal arrived late and didn’t leave time for the city to do enough research on the offer, Connelly says the deal only became apparent when wind bids were received in January, and it took time to configure a proposal within regulatory frameworks.

“It’s not like this deal’s been sitting on the table for years,” she says.

“It’s not that it was coming late to the scene,” adds Kurt Haeger, Xcel managing director of wholesale planning. “That’s how long it takes to get a deal like this done.”

Eves acknowledges that the full specifics of the deal won’t be made public until the council’s July 19 meeting, in part because Xcel doesn’t want to tip its hand to any possible competitors.

Haeger adds that it wouldn’t be appropriate to discuss the details before a deal is struck, but that Xcel will be “transparent and open” once a ballot proposal is agreed upon.

“We can’t negotiate with the whole populace of Boulder,” Connelly says.

“But we’re trying,” adds Eves.

Connelly explains that Xcel is hoping to have two ballot questions: one asking voters to approve a traditional franchise agreement with Xcel, and one requesting the franchise agreeement with added infusion of wind energy.

When asked about the perception that Boulder would take on all the risk

of future energy cost fluctuations, while Xcel would take on none, Connelly replies, “We don’t think Boulder would be taking on any more risk than they would for municipalization.”

In response to a question about the need for a 20-year agreement, Connelly explains that the wind developer, NextEra, needs that commitment to pay off the capital costs associated with building the new wind farm, and those payments would be higher if compressed over a shorter period of time.

Some Xcel critics say they are suspicious of Xcel’s models for determining the city’s costs, describing them as a black box that only Xcel will control and have access to. And the calculations get complicated. “Curtailment” costs would charged by wind generator NextEra to protect its investment at times when the turbines will need to be slowed, when energy needs are already being met by Xcel’s fossil-fuel plants, which can’t be turned down as easily as wind farms. “Integration” charges are assessed to cover Xcel’s operating costs related to bringing the wind energy into the grid. And Boulder will also pay the difference between the cost of wind energy and the money saved by shutting down the most expensive fossil-fuel generation on Xcel’s system at that time (likely natural gas), an amount referred to as the “avoided cost.”

Initially, that would cost the city more money, since wind currently costs more, but Xcel officials claim that, as fossil fuel prices rise, Boulder could eventually get money back, as the cost of fossil fuels rises. (Xcel estimates that the contract would initially cost Boulder about $9 million more per year, or a 7 percent to 8 percent increase for Boulder ratepayers.)

On some matters, such as Xcel’s efforts to meet individually with city councilmembers, or how much Xcel would lose annually if Boulder went elsewhere for its electricity, Xcel officials seem unclear. They insist, however, that details will be made public once a ballot proposal is finalized — whether people want them or not.

“You can explain how sausage is made, but you only want to see it once,” Xcel spokesperson Michelle Aguayo says when asked about the cost models.

“People want to trust it, but if you actually put it on the table, their eyes would glaze over, and they’d say, ‘Next.’”

The DEA is high on crack Last week, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) disappointed medical marijuana researchers and patients when it rejected a petition to reclassify marijuana, declaring that the drug has no medical uses.

The petition requested that the federal government reclassify marijuana from a schedule I controlled substance to a schedule III, IV or V substance in acknowledgment of its proven medical benefits. Sound scientific research has shown that marijuana helps to alleviate chronic pain, neuropathy (nerve pain, which is very hard to treat), and chemo-induced nausea better than other available pharmaceutical methods.

But the DEA refused, insisting that ganja is dangerously addictive and has no medical benefits.

Those boys in Washington must be smoking crack. Not only is the DEA’s assertion false, but it’s also based on transparent self-interest. As support for medical marijuana grows and the industry becomes more entrenched in the states like Colorado where it is legal, federal law enforcement is doing all it can to protect its war chest — the millions in taxpayer dollars used to hunt and bring down people who use marijuana. It’s also protecting the interests of Big Pharma, which doesn’t want to see a plant anyone can grow become an alternative to the host of expensive, chemical products they’re paying our doctors to prescribe.

Together with a recent federal memo, which declares everyone associated with the medical marijuana industry to be in violation of federal law, the DEA decision has left local policymakers feeling jumpy. It’s already hard enough for medical marijuana dispensaries to find business partners—bankers, landlords, security workers. Now it could become even more difficult. Fear of federal prosecution has prompted KC Becker, a Boulder City Councilwoman, to ask for clarification from city attorneys about any possible risk to city staff who deal with licensing local dispensaries.

But marijuana researchers and patient advocates aren’t going to accept the DEA’s decision and plan to sue the feds. Good for them. Too many people have suffered from marijuana prohibition to allow it to continue.

Sue the feds. Then, in 2012, let’s legalize the stuff.

Mom faces jail time for veggies City bureaucrats in Oak Park, Mich., are apparently suffering from cranio-rectal inversion, a common affliction among elected officials. They are choosing to prosecute a mother of six for growing vegetables in her front yard. No, not marijuana. Vegetables.

You may have heard of them: tomatoes, peas, carrots, squash, green beans.

Julie Bass has already been ticketed for her front-yard garden, which consists of five well-maintained raised beds.

She refused to destroy the beds. Faced with Bass’s unrepentant veggie growing, Oak Park authorities decided to charge her with a misdemeanor.

If convicted, Bass could face 93 days in jail.

City authorities believe they’re doing the right thing and lamely quote a city ordinance stating that front yards are supposed to consist of “suitable” live plant material. Though this vague ordinance certainly doesn’t prohibit vegetable gardens per se, city officials say the veggies aren’t what people want to see.

Someone get on the phone and tell Michelle Obama about this. After all, she planted veggies in the lawn at the White House, which is slightly more upscale than any home in Oak Park.

Sadly, Bass isn’t the first person to face harassment over front-yard veggies, but cases in other towns were eventually resolved after public outcry forced officials to rewrite city code specifically to permit front-yard gardens. But, although there’s been plenty of outcry — a Facebook page set up to support Bass, titled Oak Park Hates Veggies, has more than 23,000 “likes” — Oak Park city brass haven’t seem to have gotten the message, possibly because of the aforementioned cranio-rectal inversion. So we need to shout louder.

Boulder Weekly called Oak Park, but the person who took the call, Diane Lemanski, assistant to the city manager, said she couldn’t comment and couldn’t take our comment. Emails to her boss, City Manager Rick Fox, are bouncing.

Head-up-the-ass bureaucrats who are also cowards. How very special.

Urban gardens are patriotic. They also happen to be the future of food.

Oak Park needs to update its city code to support this healthy choice, rather than threatening a mother with jail time for trying to feed her kids nutritious, affordable meals.

Study shows climate change is hurting native flora

According to a recent Colorado study published in the Journal of Ecology, they’re getting burned up.

The scientists analyzed data from meadow habitats in Gunnison County ranging from dry, rocky slopes to wet, low areas, beginning with observations taken in 1973.

The study tracked midsummer blooming patterns of wild flowers, as well as snowfall and temperature. The scientists noted a “mid-season reduction in total flower number” and a change in flowering patterns throughout the summer, which they associate with hotter and drier summers. A reduction in the number of flowers or a change in when they bloom could have serious consequences for pollinators like bumblebees, the study adds.

While the study paints an unsettling picture for meadows in Gunnison, local experts in Boulder County caution against drawing too many conclusion about our own habitats — at least right away.

According to Tim Seastedt, a professor of ecology at the University of Colorado, year-to-year changes in cycles complicate the picture for scientists.

“It’s tough. Inter-annual variability is huge, so every year, we get a new look. This year, it was a dry spring and everything really moved slowly until we got that wet period and everything started to catch up.

And now we’re back to an absolutely average year rainfall-wise,” he says.

The mid-1990s were particularly dry, while the early 2000s saw much higher precipitation, and the extent of the human impact on these cycles is difficult to judge.

“These are natural cycles, too,” Lynn Riedel, a plant ecologist with the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks department, says. “Drought leaves openings that theoretically allow plants that might get into a site to get in.”

Riedel says Boulder’s something of a haven when it comes to climate change. The area’s unique topography contributes to special weather patterns that create micro-climates.

“That creates a setup for refuge for plants and animals as climate changes. So we can look to the past to kind of guess what might happen,” she says.

And while there hasn’t been a study in Boulder County analogous to the one in Gunnison County, Seastedt says that there has been a large amount of research looking at the ecosystem from a broader perspective. The main question has been which groups of plants have benefited from the longer growing season that has been emerging here — and which groups have suffered.

“We see a decline in the abundance overall of certain groups, but we can’t tell if that has anything to do with phenology or competition or change in resources. It’s a hand-waver,” he says.

And like any competition, there are winners and losers in the natural world, especially when the rules of that competition change.

“Winter annuals species seem to be the winners, and unfortunately most of them are not native. And one of them is, unfortunately, quite undesirable — cheatgrass.”

As for whether Boulder wildflowers are in decline like they are in Gunnison County, Seastedt says there is not enough species-specific information yet available.

“It doesn’t mean it’s not happening. It just means that we’re not set up with a sophisticated enough monitoring program to really nail that down.”

Whether or not any particular species is thriving or declining, however, one thing Seastedt emphasizes is that we can’t get back to a fully native ecosystem.

“The problem is the native environment grew under a set of conditions that no longer exist. Our atmospheric chemistry is different both in terms of CO2 and nitrogen, and those are both plant nutrients.

Now, there’s more of it, so the guys that use more of it benefit. So it sort of changes the competition rules.”

They go for woody or broad-leafed plants 85 percent of the time, and grasses only 13 percent of the time. Goats also browse, rather than graze, nibbling bits from several plants, which is how they get away with eating toxic weeds without getting poisoned.

Some of the plants goats might eat appear on Colorado’s list of noxious weeds. The state requires the monitoring and control of those species.

“When done at the proper times, grazing prevents the current year's plants from going to seed and depletes the root system's reserves,” according to the city.

“Grazing also recycles organic material back into the soil and cultivates the ground, allowing for better water infiltration, aeration and sunlight exposure.”

Relatively few counties have adopted goats for integrated pest management, according to Steve Ryder, state weed coordinator with the Colorado Department of Agriculture.

“They’ve looked into it and found … for a number of reasons they may not be able to take advantage of them,” Ryder says. “One of them is cost.”

“Goats will graze on anything, and they like native grasses and forbs just as much, if not more than, noxious weeds,” he says. “You have to be really hands-on with them and make sure they’re eating what you want them to eat.”

Browsing goats work basically like a lawn mower, he says, by pruning the plant back without destroying its root system. State requirements on weeds divide them into three categories, called “lists,” with varying levels of priority for eradication.

Neither eradicating nor stopping the spread of the weeds on List C is a priority, though the state and local government will provide education and resources to groups that want to require control of those species. List B species are widespread; controlling infestations is an immediate goal, while eradication is a long-term goal. For List A noxious weeds, which are not well established in the state yet and are very invasive, the state requires eradication.

“Unfortunately Boulder County has probably more List A species than any other county in the state,” Ryder says.

“The combination of suburban and urban areas, prairie and mountain microclimates has made the area particularly susceptible.”

Grazing doesn’t always keep a plant species from establishing itself, he says, because the plant has to be prevented from going to seed. Mow it — or graze it — down one week, and it could re-flower and produce viable seeds a few weeks later.

2009 election, Longmont voters were asked to allow the city to begin offering telecommunication services using a fiber-optic network the city installed in 1997.

About 90 of the 144 fibers in the 17-mile network are “dark,” or unused.

The city does use parts of the network for municipal communications, and it does lease out some fibers to firms with the technical wherewithall to link into them. But the city needs voter approval to offer broader, user-friendly service to its citizens from its own network.

oats, the notoriously undiscriminating eaters, have been set loose on some of Boulder’s nonirrigated park areas to assist the City of Boulder in controlling invasive weeds.

The city has allowed 300 to 350 goats to graze on the east side of the Boulder Reservoir for about a week.

This is the 11th consecutive year the Boulder’s Parks and Recreation Department has sent goats out to patrol the weed populations as part of an integrated pest management plan.

Integrated pest management means tackling a pest through several methods — cultural, mechanical, chemical and biological. In a backyard garden, it could mean releasing ladybugs to eat aphids.

“The use of biological controls, such as goat-grazing, is important as the department seeks to reduce the amount of herbicides used,” a city press release states.

According to the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, an independent, nonprofit institute in Oklahoma that studies plant science and agricultural programs, goats provide a lower-cost, if slower, alternative to mechanical or chemical weed control measures.

many ways, Rosh Rocheleau’s life evokes a Kerouac sense of wander. While touring as a musician in Iceland, Rocheleau literally stumbled into a darkened café and found himself enlightened.

“The waiters were blind, and they sent me in with a cane just by myself,” Rocheleau says. “I had to find my way in the pitch dark. I couldn’t see anything. It was a cool experience, and I just thought it would be great to bring back to Boulder. But I didn’t know anyone who was blind, so it took me maybe three or four years to find somebody who was.”

Years later, while attending Naropa University, Rocheleau steadily became connected to the blind community in Boulder and created the foundations of the Blind Café — a touring event that stops locally, as well as in Portland and Austin. The blind café has become an anticipated slice of culture in these communities. Rocheleau says 18 July 14, 2011

The Blind Café also donates a portion of its proceeds to a local foundation supporting the blind community.

The Boulder Blind Café will be supporting the Boulder Guide Dog Puppy Raisers, an organization that trains puppies to be guide dogs for the blind.

Suspending sight helps take people out of their worries and into their present state, Rocheleau says.

“My understanding is that the fundamental principle is that people go in there, and because we don’t have our vision, we are suddenly like, ‘I don’t know how to do anything anymore,’ and the world is new,” Rocheleau says.

“We have to engage and be more present and more aware and more sharpthinking and mindful.”

The Blind Café seats patrons at community tables in a completely dark room. For many participants, this is the first time they have been unable to see.

“Chaos is actually part of it,” Rocheleau says. “It’s welcomed. I’m creating a situation where I want people to be uncomfortable — I want people to come and be like, ‘I don’t know what to do!’ And all of a sudden they have to

Rocheleau says that the event is in no way a simulation of what it means to be blind, but does help build community, create mental presence in sighted individuals and help build blind awareness.

“They discover that functioning as a blind person is not nearly as hard as they thought it was,” Leary says. “They do realize that it’s an awful lot of work to change, but they realize that it’s possible.”

Rocheleau says the Blind Café also helps empower the blind wait staff by putting them in a leadership position.

“It’s a reverse role,” he says. “Usually, a blind person is walking down the street and people come up to them and say, ‘Hey, can I help you? Do you need any help?’ ... But in this situation, when you’re in the dark — say you’re a guest and you just spilled water all over yourself and your neighbor, and you need a napkin, and you don’t know how to function, and you’ve got to go to the bathroom — you can call a server, and they can lead you.”

Central City Opera presents Carmen and more fierce and earthy Carmen stalks the stage at the Central City Opera this summer.

Director Daniel’s Pelzig’s production of Bizet’s ever-popular opera, starring mezzo Kirstin Chávez in the title role, opened the CCO’s diverse 2011 season June 25. There are eight more performances through the last day of the season, Aug. 7.

Also underway in Central Mark Kiryluk City is the North American preKirstin miere production of Handel’s Chávez as Carmen Amadigi di Gaula, a mythological tale of fantasy and enchantment.

This production, conducted by Baroque opera specialist Matthew Halls and directed by Alessandro Talevi, will be performed nine more times through Aug. 4.

Rounding out the summer schedule are three one-act operas. Puccini’s comic romp Gianni Schicchi is presented alongside two rarities, Kurt Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins and Poulenc’s satirical Breasts of Tiresias. All three operas opened last weekend and will be heard again on July 30. Additional performances will offer Gianni Schicchi on a double bill alternately with Weill and Poulenc.

One of the most popular operas, deservedly so, Carmen was set in the interior of a warehouse, giving it an ahistorical, industrial feel. Shifting screens and small additions helped set individual scenes: a desk for the cap-

tain’s office, a billiard table for the tavern, large crates for the smuggler’s hideaway. Only a cramped and confused changing of the guard in Act I and the crowd scene in Act IV seemed compromised on the small stage.

The female leads in Carmen had the greater experience and were generally superior to the males. Chávez is justly known for her interpretation of the title role, although her mannerisms were crudely sexual rather than smolderingly sensual. With a dark vocal quality well-suited to the role, her singing was especially effective in the seductive seguidilla in Act I and her mocking of Don José in Act II. Elizabeth Caballero was effective in the emotionally limited role of Micaëla. She managed her sweet, lyrical voice well, with only an occasional loss of control at the top.

Jon Burton sang ardently as Don José, but the polish and quality of his voice did not match the intensity of his performance.

His stage presence was ungraceful and lumpish, especially in his fight with Escamillo and the final scene with Carmen.

Gustavo Ahualli sang well but had none of the presence Escamillo should radiate, due in part to being costumed more like a banker than a matador.

The orchestra gave an incisive performance under the direction of Timothy Myers.

Unlike Carmen, Handel’s operas are a hard sell to contemporary audiences. All the action takes place in recitatives, separated by a series of reflective arias expressing a single emotional state. Musically, these

works were dominated by the superstars of the time, male castrato singers who had a volume, sustaining power and ability to sing rapid flourishes that natural voices cannot match.

That said, the CCO production of Amadigi is a reasonable realization of the genre. Countertenors Christopher Ainslie and David Trudgen handled the demands of the castrato roles well, although the latter’s part lay awkwardly across the break in his voice. The women in the cast — Kathleen Kim as the sorceress Melissa and Katherine Manley as Oriana — managed their roles ably.

Use of moving shelves, representing a Renaissance cabinet of curiosities, successfully adapted the magical transformations characteristic of Baroque theater to Central City’s small space. Talevi’s direction made effective use of the physical style of staging now fashionable for Baroque opera, as opposed to the costumed concert that was so often seen in the past.

However, the production is seriously marred by the muddied symbolism of the ending, when the pagan magician Orgando appears to step directly out of Raphael’s “Portrait of Pope Julius II,” accompanied by what can only be Jesuit priests who abet book burnings — perhaps the magical books of the evil sorceress? But it remains a mystery why the pope would join with Eros to celebrate the triumph of earthly love.

As with Carmen, the orchestra, now under Halls, was one of the strengths of the production. The addition of a few period instruments (harpsichord, Baroque cello, theorbo) gave the standing ensemble a sound that was effective if not strictly historical.

Finally, the evening of one-acts gives audiences a chance to hear Puccini’s delightful Gianni Schicchi, in company with works that are far more written about than performed. Opera lovers with an interest in history won’t want to miss either Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins or Poulenc’s Breasts of Tiresias.

Blitzen Trapper taps the nostalgic music of their youth for new album

hether Eric Earley is writing about it or talking about it, any discussion of the music he makes for Blitzen Trapper presents an uneasy exercise. He states an answer then verbally erases it — a songwriter uncertain of how to objectively speak of his craft. Earley completely inhabits his role as an artist, which makes it difficult to get him to look from the outside in.

No matter, since the music of Blitzen Trapper speaks so well for itself. The Portland, Ore., band’s fusion of nostalgic country, folk and rock simmered for most of the last decade — seven years to be exact — in personal recordings and local shows. But once the cat wrestled free of the bag on 2007’s Wild Mountain Nation — thanks in part to Pitchfork’s Best New Music designation — the ride has been relentless ever since.

Early comparisons ranged from Pavement and Grateful Dead to Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Band, showcasing a versatile enough sound for Earley & Co. to land credibility on tours with The Hold Steady, Iron & Wine, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks and even Wilco. Festival appearances followed for Blitzen Trapper at Coachella and Sasquatch, and Sub Pop came calling somewhere along the way. It was every independent band’s dream.

Yet all the while, the members of Blitzen Trapper — now five with the loss of Drew Laughery — have held loose to the fame that continued with subsequent releases like Furr (2008) and Destroyer of the Void (2010). It’s that rootedness that keeps BT from rising and falling with the inevitable hipster hype — and it’s also the subject of the band’s upcoming release, American Goldwing.

“American Goldwing is a lot more rock ’n’ roll and

also a lot more country than anything we’ve done to this point,” says Earley. “In that sense, it’s a lot more personal. I grew up with a lot of music that was comfortable — nothing experimental or anything. It was music that you could just hear your uncle or dad playing in the garage while they worked on the car. Or maybe my older sister would play something recognizable. They were into more ’70s music. It was that kind of thing.”

Those influences have always existed at the core of Blitzen Trapper’s music, not only musically woven through each release but also lyrically as well. Yet Earley says that personal, nostalgic influence goes beyond an influence to much deeper levels on the band’s latest.

“I’ve always explored those types of sounds, and there’s always been that aspect of nostalgic country and rock to my music,” he says. “The subject matter has always pushed things in that vein, too. In the last year or so, I’ve been thinking a lot about my family and where I come from. I’ve been thinking about relationships that I’ve had and people that I knew. My

best friend has a kid now. It’s just looking at those things close to you and letting them inform the lyrics.”

American Goldwing is also the first BT release that features more than the band members’ fingerprints on it. Tchad Blake was brought in to mix the album and Gregg Williams co-produced the tracks. Earley says it was the first time he could truly let go of something, but it was also now a possibility financially, given the band’s larger budget for recording now. “[Blake] just gave a new perspective to all of the music, and there’s just this very specific thing that he does,” explains Earley. “He did the last few Black Keys records. He’s been around a long time, and he’s just this eccentric sort of ear. His ears are cool. He made it old-sounding yet modern at the same time. He’s really good. It’s just hard to put your finger on.”

Earley says fans won’t be too surprised by anything they hear on American Goldwing, since it stays inside the terrain they’ve covered on past releases. Yet he does believe it’s their most consistent album to date.

“Our records tend to go all over the place in terms of genre and feeling, but this one feels more consistent compared to the ones that have come before.”

With an upcoming show at Denver’s Bluebird Theater, Earley says fans should expect to hear some experimentation with the new songs as well as some interesting covers. It’s part of a smaller 10-city tour with AgesandAges to try out the new songs for a larger fall tour. Then again, Earley backs off that statement just as quickly as he says it, realizing that he doesn’t know what to expect himself. Fans will have to be content to let the music be the primary voice for Blitzen Trapper once again.

again.

“It made us feel new, like we had pressed reset,” she says. “I don’t know any other way to say it. It’s like we’ve grown as people and we have grown as artists, and there is a lot of excitement we have about this sort of coming-of-age we have discovered, here. That we can become excited about music this far into a career and feel like it’s your first record is an incredible experience for us. It is just a powerful thing that we want to keep doing.”

That Crisp talks about Loud Planes Fly Low feeling like a new start, despite it being the fifth Rosebuds CD, makes sense, considering the events that preceded the writing and recording of the CD. In 2008, after releasing their fourth CD, Life Like, Crisp’s marriage to Howard fell apart.

It may seem surprising, but Crisp says she knew the split wasn’t going to end The Rosebuds.

“Ivan and I have always connected creatively, and I feel like our creative partnership, that never changed,” Crisp says. “We’re a really good team.”

Crisp says she and Howard didn’t know what kind of album they would make in the wake of their split, but it soon became obvious that it had to be about their marriage.

“What else could we write about?” Crisp observes.

“It was the most important thing. And so anything else would have seemed contrived, really.”

As a result of being able to honestly explore their feelings about their marriage, Crisp and Howard created a CD in Loud Planes Fly Low that is richer, more revealing and more emotionally raw than anything they’ve done before.

When Howard repeats in “Without a Focus” that “I don’t know how I’m supposed to feel,” there’s no mistaking the fear and vulnerability he’s feeling as his once-settled life crumbles into a far more uncertain future. And Crisp touches a nerve in “Come Visit Me,” where she longs for her partner even though she knows a tryst will probably do more harm than good. One key couplet goes: “I wanna feel something way out here / I need something to happen now / even if it fucks me up.”

Those sort of heavy emotions have not been typical for The Rosebuds before now. Instead, words like fun, light and spontaneous seemed like appropriate terms to describe both the band’s beginnings and its music before now.

In fact, Howard and Crisp became a band in 2001 when Howard was asked to sub for a band at a bar in their then-home base, Wilmington, N.C., literally a few hours before the gig. He had his wife come along to play keys at the show, and the group was born. A year later, the duo had moved to Raleigh and had a record deal with Merge Records. But Crisp and Howard retained their cheerful, unpretentious atti-

tudes as their albums (2003’s The Rosebuds Make Out, 2005’s Birds Make Good Neighbors, 2007’s Night of the Furies and 2008’s Life Like) built the group a solid following.

But Loud Planes Fly Low, whose music fits the emotional weight of its lyrics, is something different for the group. Often, the tone is melancholy (“Go Ahead,” “Waiting for You” and “Come Visit Me”) or sad (“Without a Focus” and “Cover Ears”).

Fortunately, the melodies are often downright pretty and so appealing that it’s hard not to be pulled into the CD’s sway.

Crisp says she enjoyed making Loud Planes Fly Low, and if the CD has its share of sadness and uncertainty, it ultimately has a positive message.

“We were very lucky to be able to do this together and have this language between us that we speak, in common, [and] that we have this ability to make music together,” she says.

“I don’t know what [Loud Planes Fly Low] is going to do for other people, but I know what it did for me, and it makes me really appreciate the family that we are, and the creative partners that we are,” she says.

“And it really has me feeling celebratory for what we do have. There’s a very hopeful quality to the record for me. So it gives me a lot of inspiration.”

Considering how strongly Crisp and Howard feel about the new CD, it’s no surprise that the group’s live set is built around the new songs.

And Crisp says the end of the marriage has not had an adverse effect on how she and Howard communicate and relate on stage.

“I guess making the record felt like a really great way to sort of cleanse ourselves and be new people for each other,” she says. “So the live shows are very — we’re both really happy with the shows and being on stage together.”

‘Horrible’ pretty good

ou can practically hear little coils of contempt tightening inside Jason Bateman every time he’s in a pickle on screen. In the new comedy Horrible Bosses, the Bateman specialty is the are-you-trying-to-tell-me response.

At one point in the film, when confronted with some improbable information, the Arrested Development alum asks one of his partners in idiot crime: “You found a hit man online?” Horrible Bosses is not Noel Coward, nor is it trying to be. And any sort of comedy benefits from an underplayer in its midst.

Cleverly structured, Horrible Bosses works in spite of its cruder, scrotum-centric instincts. Director Seth Gordon’s film was produced by Brett Ratner and Jay Stern, who made their pile on the Rush Hour films. Going in, therefore, you know you’ll be subjected to a full complement of screeching tires and mayhem only tangentially related to the reasons people might get a few laughs out of this thing.

But they will. I did, anyway.

Ground down by their respective, heinous supervisors, the friends played by Bateman (as Nick, the would-be manager), Jason Sudeikis (an accountant and full-time horn dog) and panic-prone Charlie Day (playing a

e want the same thing from our comedians that we expect of great ballplayers — that they “leave it all on the field.” And Kevin James does that. From his various team-ups with Adam Sandler to Paul Blart: Mall Cop, James hurls himself at the physical shtick and never lets on that he knows he’s not making art.

In Zookeeper, James and his stunt-doubles take a pounding — pratfalls, bicycle spills, porcupine pokes.

It’s a kid-friendly romantic comedy, a Night at the Museum at the zoo. With slapstick and sincerity, James buys into the idea that he’s a friend to animals, big and small, and that a guy with his limited prospects and his linemangone-to-seed physique has a shot — several shots — at a beauty like Leslie Bibb. And he sells that idea to us, too.

relentlessly harassed dental assistant) dare themselves into becoming murderers. Their South Central L.A. “murder consultant,” played by Jamie Foxx, offers advice and counsel.

Kevin Spacey, the only man in American movies drier and more ironic than Bateman, dines out on the role of Bateman’s boss, a smug control freak. Colin Farrell brings massive, slobby relish to Sudeikis’ tormentor, a cocaine fiend who fancies himself a martial arts master.

Jennifer Aniston scanties around as the predatory dentist who employs, harasses and blackmails Day. Strangers on a Train and Throw Momma From the Train are not simply purloined here. They’re actually name-checked in Foxx’s introductory scene in a way that acknowledges the thievery on the fly. I like this script’s sense of direction; you know where it’s going, yet supporting characters ranging from Foxx’s adviser to the unseen voice of a particularly astute GPS have a way of re-entering the narrative at opportune

moments.

The byplay among the three leads includes an overeager number of anal-rape references (the optimal number being none), but the trio feed off one another’s energies in a pleasing way. One of the best sight gags in Horrible Bosses presents one of the few certifiably clean jokes in the picture: Day’s attempt to slide under a garage door before it hits the pavement. Why is this funny? It’s funny because director Gordon held the shot. He didn’t cut for “maximum comic impact,” the way his own producer, Ratner, likely would have.

Aniston’s role isn’t Aniston’s fault. Playing a conniver whose voracious sexual appetite has turned her into a freak, Aniston is certainly game. Yet she’s not much fun. Horrible Bosses exists in the usual arresteddevelopment Boys Town of early 21st century Hollywood comedy; there’s no room for a witty or surprising female character in this town, only maniacal sluts or more easygoing ones. It’s a credit to the cast and, at their liveliest, to the writers that the results percolate in a way that movies such as The Hangover Part II never did. And keep an eye on Day; the bearded imp from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia scores substantial laughs by letting his thick-headed panic escalate, slowly, so that his voice seems to be changing all over again, 20 years after adolescence.

Night at the zoo

by Roger Moore It’s a talking animals comedy as the hapless Griffin ( James), zookeeper at Franklin Park Zoo, receives advice from the critters in his charge. The animals have always kept to “the code,” enforced

by Joe the Lion (Sylvester Stallone): “No talking to humans.”

But we’ve seen Griffin flame out with the fair Stephanie (Bibb) in an epic proposal scene that opens the movie. And the animals have heard Griffin go on and on about this woman for years. Enough is enough. If the friendly zookeeper can’t close the deal, the animal kingdom will pitch in and get him up to speed on what they know by instinct — the mating game.

Joe the Lion suggests “cutting her

from the herd,” getting her away from her current boyfriend ( Joe Rogan, an over-the-top boor). Joe’s lioness wife (Cher) talks up the idea of making Stephanie jealous. The bears offer advice on becoming a predator. And when you walk, “Lead with your puddin’ cup,” Jerome and Bruce ( Jon Favreau and Faizon Love) declare.

Yeah, it means what you think it does.

The capuchin monkey (Adam Sandler, doing a very funny voice) is lost in reveries about having a thumb.

“I’ve been blessed.”

And the elephant ( Judd Apatow) has the same solution for any awkward moment — “Flee. Fleeing is the new fighting.”

All along, Griffin can’t see how sweet and seemingly available the zoo’s eagle expert and vet (Rosario Dawson) is. She’s into guys who are into animals.

“You’re like the frickin’ hippo whisperer,” she cracks.

Director Frank Coraci, a veteran of Adam Sandler’s comic style (The Waterboy), is more at home with the slapstick than the would-be romance or the movie’s darker subtext. Bernie (Nick Nolte), a forlorn gorilla, has long been kept in a cave so he can’t repeat his attack on a cruel zookeeper (Donnie Wahlberg). The film’s silliest scenes involve Griffin dragging Bernie along to Bernie’s dream eatery — T.G.I.Friday’s — where Bernie, supposedly on his way to a costume party, is a hit.

The film’s mix of digital critters and real animals results in far too many shots of this beast or that one standing alone in the shot, mouth moving, cracking jokes.

But the cuddly, ever-put-upon James takes his comic lumps like a man. His Griffin suffers injuries and indignities and lets us laugh at him as he does. No matter where the script wanders and where the direction founders, at some point, James’ comic instincts take over. And this time, they don’t let him down.

Niwot Market turns casual dining into community affair

hroughout the warm weather season, the Niwot Market dishes up a Friday night supper that’s as much a community happening as it is an enjoyably casual dining experience.

Menus vary from week to week, so it’s best to call ahead to find out what’s cooking. On some evenings the entrée might be fried chicken or steak, on another night clam pasta.

The evening that friend Cynthia and I went, the menu was an $18 All-American barbecue heavily influenced by Southern home cooking.

We arrived at the starting time of 6 p.m., just as the courses arrived at the outdoor buffet table. Many tables were already occupied, with communal dining being a common theme. Live blues contributed to the festive, communal vibe. Within moments of sitting at a four top, we ran into my colleague Doug and his wife Maureen, Niwot residents and loyal fans of the market’s dinners.

We learned the Market also serves a reasonably priced Sunday breakfast, which will likely inspire a return visit.

Meals here come with all the trimmings, and I felt compelled to make a few command decisions. I bypassed a colorful green salad in favor of fresh, ribbon-like cole slaw. It was refreshing to run into a version of this classic summertime salad that wasn’t soggy and drenched in mayo. Instead, Niwot’s preparation was both crisp and lightly dressed. Not-toosweet cornbread, served straight off a baking sheet and drizzled with honey, wasn’t too shabby either.

ollard greens, like kale and mustard greens, are a staple of economical Southern cooking. Slightly herbal in flavor, the cholesterol-lowering plant requires boiling to render it tender enough to eat. Additions to the greens cooking water include the ubiquitous ham hock, onion, garlic, and hot pepper sauce. The cooking liquid is retained after preparation as pot liquor, a savory if not restorative broth that can be consumed on its own or with a hunk of cornbread for dipping. Some folk traditions prescribe the consumption of these greens, which resemble paper money, on New Year’s as a way to promote prosperity. sides, namely the collard greens braised with hot pepper and meaty ham hock. It’s rare to see these nutritious and flavorful greens on the menu, let alone ones that have an ideal crisp/tender texture. The other was the macaroni and cheese, which Cynthia deemed brilliant. Topped with a breadcrumb crust, this pasta had the full, tangy flavor that can only come with the copious application of real cheese. The pungent qualities were balanced out by a deep creaminess, which compelled me to come back for seconds.

Of the two main courses, I preferred the delicately smoky beef brisket over the ribs. The ribs did have an exemplary falling-off-the-bone texture, but there was too much salt on the meat. A more assertive sauce would also have shown off these ribs to better effect.

The brisket had the melt-in-your-mouth qualities that can only result from true slow-cooking.

Furthermore, the correct balance of smoke, salt and fat gave this meat a velvety richness that made adding

sauce superfluous.

Dessert consisted of simple but well-executed cupcakes from Slice of Feist, whose offerings are available in the market’s baked goods section. These were topped with a fresh raspberry and a delightful lemon frosting that reminded me of something my mom would make. While I’m not the biggest fan of white cake, I could fully get behind this light-textured version that wasn’t too sweet and played nicely off the frosting’s citrusy qualities.

Nourishment comes in many forms, and certainly the Niwot Market’s Friday dinner provides more than ample culinary sustenance. But judging from the familiarity that diners had with one another in a comfortable, easygoing setting, this event also provides welcome community nourishment. Even if you don’t live in Niwot, this meal’s still an opportunity to experience genuine small town hospitality.

TIDBITES Food happenings around town Los Oasis opens in Boulder Los Oasis Latin Grill & Cerveceria opened on June 7 in the former Boulder Draft House location, at 2027 13th St. Owner George Hanna says that after closing the Oasis Brewery in 2001, he became interested in pairing dishes typically served in southern Mexico with lagers that didn’t overpower the food.

“We worked with a chef in Aspen, Colo. — his name is Michael Beary — who was the inspiration for the menu that we have,” Hanna says.

Beary worked with Los Oasis chefs for a month to put together a

menu featuring authentic recipes from Oaxaca and Yucatan. Los Oasis also brews its own Mexicanstyle lagers and distills its own tequila, which must be referred to as “100 percent blue agave spirits” because it isn’t produced in Mexico.

The Los Oasis owner says he plans to can and distribute two of the lagers — Cabo Gold and Rio Negro — and their blue agave spirits statewide.

Los Oasis is open from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch, 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for happy hour, and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. for dinner on Tuesday through Sunday. It is located at 2027 13th St.

Idée grew up in France, where he says food trucks have been popular for years, and came up with the idea to make a trailer with a wood-fired oven installed on it after working for Four Grand-Mère, a manufacturer of woodfired ovens. With the help of his friend, the CEO of Four Grand-Mère, Idée researched, designed his oven, acquired the materials he needed, and constructed the oven on a trailer over the course of eight months while working another job on the side.

The Seb’s Portable Wood-Fired Cuisine menu varies each day depending on the produce they get from local farms, but Idée says that he and his staff cook pizzas, calzones, meatballs, lasagnas and quiches.

Seb’s Portable Wood-Fired Cuisine joins about five other trucks — Tasterie Truck, Heirloom, Comida, Top of the Hill Grill West and Fruta Juice — in selling food to customers at Prospect Park in Longmont Monday evenings.

Ingraham says that these gatherings of food trucks in parking lots, called pods, are common in food truck cities like Portland.

“Five food trucks will meet in a parking lot, and it’s kind of like a mobile mini food court where you know you’re going to go to this location and have five options of really good food, and everybody’s kind of in it together rather than competing against each other,” Ingraham says.

He adds that he knew he wanted to sell authentic Sonoran-style Mexican food to local customers and decided to Boulder Weekly

open a food truck instead of a restaurant because of the lower overhead costs.

After about seven months of work, Ingraham says Verde’s truck, named Mary, will hit the streets within the next week or so.

Verde’s sister truck, Cheese Louise, is going to be serving up grilled cheese, set and build-your-own sandwiches to customers in early to middle August, Ingraham says. Other dishes on Cheese Louise’s menu include soups and Frenchies — battered, deep-fried cheese sandwiches covered in corn flakes.

Frenchies were originally served at King’s Food Host, an old multinational food chain that used to have a restaurant in Boulder, and Ingraham says that he and partners K.C. Slager and John Sethney are including it on their menu to pay homage to the old-school-style diner.

Ingraham says that in the end, he thinks customers have a more personal experience at a food truck than they do at a restaurant because they can talk to the food truck owners and operators as they prepare the food.

“I’ve worked at enough places to learn that a smile and a friendly conversation is just so important not only to business, but also to life in general and making people happy with their experience,” Ingraham says. “We understand there’s hundreds of places that people could go to eat, but we want people to feel special when they come to eat at our food truck and feel like they’re wanted and not just another number on a ticket.”

Unlike trails such as the Pacific Crest Trail or the Appalachian Trail, the Colorado Trail is a multi-use trail open to mountain bikers (in non-wilderness areas), foot travel and equestrians. The Colorado Trail is a way to enjoy the Colorado mountains in multiple ways.

COLORADO TRAIL from Page 47

The trail is conveniently divided into 28 different segments ranging in length from 11 to 30 miles. This division of the trail allows many people to complete the trail over the course of several seasons, in addition to making planning a journey on the trail a little more logistically manageable.

Not many people will have the opportunity to hike, bike or ride the trail in one four- to six-week stretch.

Luckily, there are some ways to experience what The Colorado Trail has to offer without this time commitment.

Day trip: An excellent (if somewhat long) day trip can be had on Segment 7 between Copper Mountain and Gold Hill. This 13-mile-long segment takes in above-tree-line views on a wide-open plateau in the Ten Mile Range. Start at Copper Mountain, and follow the Colorado Trail to the Gold Hill trailhead on Highway 9 between Breckenridge and Frisco. Use the free Summit County transit system to return to the vehicle parked at Copper. Make sure to bring your camera.

A popular variation of this excursion includes veering off the Colorado Trail just before Gold Hill and then following the Peaks Trail directly into

Frisco. The trail conveniently ends near the Frisco Backcountry Brewery for some post-trail noshing.

Weekend trip: The nearby Lost Creek Wilderness is a way to experience the Colorado Trail without traveling far. Use the Colorado Trail as part of a loop to explore this gem not far from Denver. In the fall, the aspens at Kenosha Pass are memorable.

Multi-week trip: If a person has four to six weeks to hike the trail (or less if mountain biking it), a “thruhike” on the Colorado Trail is a fantastic way to explore the state we are fortunate to call home. What better way to see a place we love than one step at a time?

For any journey on the Colorado Trail, the first place to start is the Colorado Trail Foundation’s website: www.coloradotrail.org. On the CTF site, you’ll find detailed information about the trail, resources available for planning and ways to give back with volunteer opportunities. The newly released Colorado Trail Guidebook: Eighth Edition put out by the CTF is an invaluable resource for anyone planning any length of trip on the Colorado Trail.
