Good work Just finished reading “Shackling bill gets House nod.” (News, May 13.)

This is just a note to congratulate you on your efforts to get legislation passed to limit the unnecessary and inhumane practice of excessive shackling of women prisoners in labor.

You have done what good journalists should be doing. That is, reporting on and pursuing social issues that are unjust and unfair to our citizens. I know that it may take guts to do so, at times. You done good, Pamela. I am proud of you.

I know this is true, because it says so right here on the front page of the business section of my local daily, the Austin AmericanStatesman. The headline of this AP wire story reads, “Retailers prepare for a shopping rebound.” The article reports that as economic recovery spreads and consumer optimism surges, retailers are “tweaking their merchandise” — and their prices.

For example, cashmere is back on the racks, big wedges of gourmet cheeses are being offered, gold jewelry is replacing that common silver stuff, and $250 sets of Wolfgang Puck cookware are in stock again. One clear sign of renewed consumer prosperity is that “aspirational” purchases are up — people who downscaled during the Great Recession 4 June 3, 2010

exact opposite take on America’s economic condition, just look at two other stories on this same business page. One reports that the U.S. economy now appears to be spinning into a deflationary spiral that could undermine any recovery and further delay new hirings. The other article is headlined, “Missed home payments hit record high, slow recovery.”

These two stories directly contradict the happynews report on the same page. It makes one wonder: Doesn’t anyone edit newspapers anymore? Then you remember that papers have been firing hordes of staffers — so, maybe not.

What hath BP found?

O

n Jan. 10, 1901, roughnecks working on a 1,020-foot-deep oil well near Beaumont, Texas, were lowering the drill string back into their well when, without warning, the drilling mud began furiously bubbling back out of the hole.

Alarmed, the crew ran for it. This proved to be a wise decision, because minutes later the drill string, about 700 feet of 20-foot-long steel tubes, collectively weighing several tons, came flying out of the hole.

Then, after a pause, a sound “like a cannon shot” came from the well, followed by the ejection of the drilling mud, a belch of gas, and a great geyser of oil that shot 150 feet into the air.

For the next nine days, oil spewed into the sky at the rate of 100,000 barrels a day — which was more than the combined production of all the other oil wells in the United States at the time. The crew worked furiously to contain the mess, building berms to contain the pools of crude that formed around the rig, and then additional berms when the first pools overflowed.

When the placement of a hastily improvised cap consisting of heavy timbers, railway rails, and a Christmas tree of valves finally stopped the blowout on Jan. 19, the well was surrounded by a lake of oil and a mob of investors, speculators and oil baron wannabes.

And that’s how the Spindletop oil field, the great oil-strike that launched the modern petroleum industry and several giant oil companies, was discovered — with a blowout of massive proportions.

To return to the present:

For the better part of a month, British Petroleum maintained that its Macondo oil well — that’s the formal name of the well that blew out on April 20 and sank the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig — was leaking 5,000 barrels a day of oil.

Academic experts, basing their judgments on underwater video of the leak, maintained it was a lot larger — 25,000, 50,000 or even 100,000 barrels a day. The academic estimates gained plausibility after BP inserted a siphon into the end of the ruptured pipe from which the oil is flowing and began recovering 2,000 to 5,000 barrels a day — with no visible impact on the size of the plume bubbling into the sea.

They gained even more plausibility after the federal government raised its estimates of the size of the leak to 12,000 to 19,000 barrels a day — and after BP’s attempt to plug the well with a “top kill” — by forcing drilling mud into it — failed. Most of the mud was promptly forced back out of the well as fast as BP pumped it in — and BP was using a 30,000 horsepower pump.

All of which suggests that the well may be flowing at a rate substantially higher than even the government’s upwardly revised estimate.

And that in turn raises a question: What has BP found?

Oil companies don’t drill for oil in 5,000 feet of water unless they expect to find lots of it — and in the past few years there have been a number of rich strikes in the area where BP was drilling.

To be sure, there’s mounting evidence that BP took risks and cut corners, and that may be the explanation for the blow-out. Oil companies have a

President Obama strongly criticized it, and those in favor of the bill were quick to deny that racism had anything to do with its passage.

Any American who has been paying attention to right-wing pundits and tea party activists will no doubt make the statement that the signs at Freedomworks/Fox News-sponsored rallies across our nation call that assertion into doubt.

While some could easily conclude that, if not racist, right-wing Americans merely have doubts about the patriotism of those persons whose name ends in a vowel.

I can believe that as easily as the notion that racism disappeared after 9/11, as Fox employee Bill O’Reilly stated recently.

I believe thinking Americans are not as gullible as that, but if they are, Tom Tancredo and Jon Caldara right here in Colorado should be prepared to show their birth certificates when asked to prove their citizenship if they’re traveling through Arizona.

Come to think about it, I would like to see their “papers” myself.

Buy time with Coffman I am a federal employee working for the Mine Safety and Health Administration and live in the 6th Congressional District of Colorado — Mike Coffman’s district, which includes 22,964 federal workers and retirees. I also serve on the Board of Directors of Federally Employed Women (FEW), which is hosting an event for constituents to meet with their elected lawmakers to discuss issues of concern to federal workers.

Even though Mr. Coffman and I do not agree on a lot of issues, I eagerly registered, turned in my annual leave request (federal workers have to use annual leave to participate in these types of events) and booked my airline ticket. However, I then learned from

our representative setting up the meetings that despite a request sent two months in advance, Mr. Coffman’s staff has said that not one person on the staff can meet with me and my colleague (who is retired and using her own funds to come to town).

No explanation was given. While this kind of treatment of constituents is simply egregious, it gets better!

Within two hours of receiving this terse denial of a mere 15-minute constituent meeting, this same FEW representative received via fax a fundraiser letter asking her to spend $250 to have breakfast with Mr. Coffman! So the Congressman’s staff cannot spend 15 minutes with two constituents, yet they have time to create and distribute fundraising solicitations to the person requesting that very same meeting.

Seems incredulous to me, but it does explain why Congress is “broken.”

long history of taking risks and cutting corners — the history of the industry is a history of calculated risk-taking.

But BP also had to have made some assumptions about the size and content of the geological structure it was drilling into, and it may be that those assumptions turned out to be spectacularly wrong.

Could it be that BP found a much bigger oil deposit than it expected to?

Is it possible that for the past month we’ve been looking at a Spindletop-size gusher on the ocean floor?

Just how large an oil field was BP expecting to find, and how large does it think it is in light of the blowout?

Taken together with other recent oil strikes in the vicinity, is it possible

that there is, say, an underwater Kuwait off the coast of Louisiana? If there is, what are the implications for American energy independence and the price of oil?

And more darkly, is it possible that BP has been low-balling the size of its Macondo find, not in order to minimize the size of the environmental impact of the spill, but in order to keep the find from influencing the global price of oil?

No one seems to have thought to ask.

The press covering the disaster is more interested in finding fault than finding oil, so it is failing to ask questions that go beyond the disaster and who’s to blame for it. But there may be more to the story than that.

the polling booth, he or she could decide which approach would be best for the state or the country.

Based on the last election, I would have to say that no such clear-cut choice exists today. Most politicians appear to be very ready to take the easy way out. Any high school student given basic accounting training and asked what to do about a deficit could quickly suggest raising taxes. This solution does not require any effort, intelligence, sacrifice, or skill. We must ask ourselves if this is what we elected our politicians to do. In my opinion, it is not!

How often do we see a politician stand up for what their constituency really wants or needs? Both sides of the political aisle appear to be willing to jump onto the politically correct bandwagon, regardless of the wants and needs of their constituency. The primary concern of the current crop of politicians appears to be more influenced by the squeaky wheel than by factual research into perceived needs.

It might be interesting to research what percentage of graduating college students major in political science today versus, say, 50 years ago. My guess would be that the percentage would be considerably higher today. I would also guess that the reason behind this movement toward majoring in political science has much more to do with the perceived payoff than it does the inherent patriotism. I believe that the payoff, and the ease with which that payoff can be channeled, have caused a major shift from rock-solid political stances to stances that change with every politically correct wind that blows.

As a young boy, I was taught to examine the individual running for office — to examine his or her background, experience, history and political record. Then to consider the results of that examination in light of whatever the current situation in the state or country was, and to make my choice of who to vote for based on who I truly believed could (and would) provide the best leadership toward the needed solution. I was also taught that voting the party line regardless was nothing more that shouting, “Rah-rah team,” with no intelligent basis for that cheer.

Isn’t it time we sent a message to would-be career politicians that we want to know what has happened to the politician who actually made an effort to truly represent his constituency, the state, and the country, and to find reasonable solutions to existing problems?

allowed to vote to protect the right to life of unborn babies this fall. A petition to get this issue on the ballot has enough signatures, and I hope that citizens of Colorado will follow the trend of Americans who are turning increasingly pro-life.

Over a majority of Americans now call themselves pro-life. There are many factors contributing to this trend.

Ultrasounds have shown just how very human unborn babies are. Pro-aborts don’t really even argue anymore that it’s “just a blob of tissue.” How can they argue that anymore, since science has proven that life starts from the moment of conception? So most Americans realize that the unborn are human. If human (which they are), then why does our country allow this holocaust to continue?

When pro-aborts say it’s about a “woman’s right to choose,” they are really saying a woman has the right to kill her own child. Of course, they won’t word it like that because they will lose public support, so they use shameful verbal engineering to cover-up what is really happening.

I’m confident that if more citizens of Colorado were to see what an abortion looks like, they would vote to protect the unborn this fall.

Goodwill comes to Boulder Goodwill Industries of Denver has announced that the first Goodwill thrift store and donation center in Boulder will open on Saturday, June 12, in the Basemar Shopping Center, at 2486 Baseline Rd. The store will feature gently used clothing, household goods, furniture, outdoor gear and more. Saturday’s opening celebrations will include discounted merchandise and 99 cent pairs of jeans, as well as activities for children, such as face painting and clown performances.

The store will occupy the space left vacant when Ace Hardware closed in September 2008.

Goodwill Industries is a nonprofit organization, and proceeds from Goodwill stores help fund community programs for at-risk youth, struggling families and individuals with disabilities.

Have a WWII ball The Second Annual WWII Ball will be held on Saturday, June 19, at the Boulder Airport’s Blue Hangar at 7 p.m. Attendees will enjoy a USOstyle show starring the likes of Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and the Andrews Sisters Act Reveille 3. The night of music and dancing will also feature WWII planes, military vehicles, WWII reenactments and The Hot Tomatoes, a nine-piece big band. Boulder Swing Dance, Frequent Flyers Aerial Dance Theater, Aerialist Brandy Dew, Gen. George Patton and others will make guest appearances. The night will finish in grand style, with an authentic 1940s radio broadcast announcing the end of the war, along with a balloon drop and celebration.

This year’s event comes after the success of the inaugural ball, held in June 2009, which drew a crowd of almost 600 participants dressed in styles from the 1940s. Proceeds from the 2010 ball will benefit The Spirit of Flight Center Colorado and the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum.

Circle Boulder bike event slated The City of Boulder Utilities Division’s Greenways Program will host its 13th Annual Circle Boulder

by Bicycle self-guided ride on Sunday, June 6, rain or shine. This leisurely, non-competitive ride follows the city’s bikeways, beginning and ending at Scott Carpenter Park, near 30th Street and Arapahoe Avenue, and is open to all ages and abilities.

Participants can choose the B360, a 28-mile course, or the B180, which covers 16 miles.

Riders can register for free and start the B360 between 3 and 3:30 p.m. Participants in the shorter B180 can register and begin the ride between 3:30 and 4 p.m. Participants who may need extra time for either ride can register at 2:30 p.m.

This year’s route will highlight the newly completed Elmer’s Two-mile Path and the connection between the Fourmile Canyon Creek Path and the Diagonal Highway. Participants will loop around Boulder using a linking network of paths, neighborhood streets and unpaved trails. A free post-ride party will take place at Scott Carpenter Park at 5 p.m. and will include refreshments and prize drawings.

Riders are reminded to carry water and wear appropriate gear, including a helmet, and participants must stay on trails and yield to other users. No dogs are allowed. Polo tourney to benefit hospice The Fourth Annual Polo on the Lawn sporting event to benefit HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties is slated for June 19, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on the grounds of Ashlawn in Longmont.

This public polo tournament features four teams playing in two matches, each complete with a crowd-pleasing half-time champagne divot stomp.

Slash drop-off open Mountain residents can once again drop off tree limbs and brush (“slash”) at the Boulder County Waste Transfer Station and Recycling Center at 286 Ridge Rd. in Nederland. Slash, which includes limbs, branches and trees up to six inches in diameter, can be dropped off by residents and contractors, free of charge. No other organic materials are accepted. In order to ensure that space is available for each load delivered, users must call 303258-7878 to make an appointment.

There is no limit on quantities if space is available. The slash collected will be chipped on site and hauled to Boulder for composting. Wood chips for use as garden mulch will be available free of charge while supplies last,

but must be loaded by hand. The site will remain open through the summer until the Nederland Community Forestry Sort Yard, also located on Ridge Road, opens in August.

The Meeker Park Community Forestry Sort Yard, located on the east side of the Peak-to-Peak Highway, just north of Allenspark and Meeker Park, accepts trees and slash from residents of Boulder and Larimer counties at no charge. The sort yard will be open through mid-July.

County residents can also use the Boulder County and the City of Boulder year-round organic waste drop-off center at the Western Disposal Services’ Transfer Station at 5880 Butte Mill Rd. in Boulder.

The cost to use the center for residents of unincorporated Boulder County is $37.50 per ton, 60 percent of what it regularly costs. Quantities less than a ton are charged a prorated amount.

Powerspeak arrives at library A new language-learning product, Powerspeak Languages, is available at Boulder Public Library. The first five languages available are Spanish, French, German, Mandarin Chinese and English for Spanish-speakers. All are free with a Boulder Public Library card. The courses use a variety of multi-sensory activities to take full advantage of the brain’s ability to acquire language.

Designed specifically for use by the diverse audience of library users, the courses include a combination of scored online activities, exercises, lessons and learning games. Language learners are challenged to practice speaking and writing in a variety of interactive modules designed to simulate real conversations with native speakers.

“We’re thrilled to have languagelearning products available for our library,” says Library Director Tony Tallent. “This will give our library customers more opportunities to learn a new language at their own pace.”

We recently got an ill-advised news release from Bob Brancato, who is apparently a Republican attempting to unseat Jared Polis in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The release was ill-advised because it was trumpeting the fact that none other than former Congressman and national laughingstock Tom Tancredo has endorsed Brancato.

Dude. You don’t go around bragging that Tancredo has endorsed you.

Especially in the left-leaning 2nd District. That’s like boasting about being buddies with Hugo Chavez in Colorado Springs.

Well, upon reading further, maybe that’s the image Brancato wants to project.

The release states that Brancato “has publicly saluted the state of Arizona in their tuff [sic] stance against illegal immigration.”

Wow. Racial profiler and needs help with spelling and grammar. Nice combination.

As it turns out, Brancato really is Tancredo’s mini-me. “We are honored to surround ourselves with like-minded people,” Brancato says in the release.

“Congressman Tancredo is such a man.” ’Nuff said, tuff guy.

More priests defrocked The removal of Catholic priests suspected of sexual misconduct with a minor in the early 1970s is becoming a full-time job for Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput.

We’re averaging about one a month, and if this pace keeps up, we should be expecting another one next week.

There was Father Mel Thompson on April 8, then Father Dorino De Lazzer on May 7.

The news releases go on about how every accused person should be presumed innocent, and they’re right.

But people who paid dearly for trusting Catholic priests as kids in the early 1970s were pretty innocent, too.

Just saying.

Holder held accountable Speaking of Polis, he may not be perfect, but at least he grilled U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder about that highly suspect DEA sting a few months back that seemed to be based entirely on a TV news report.

You remember the one, where one minute Chris Bartkowicz was bragging to a TV reporter about how much pot he had in his basement, and the next minute there are DEA agents at his door, despite the federal edict passed down last fall telling the DEA to leave dispensaries and caregivers alone in states with medical marijuana laws, as long as they are not in violation of those laws.

Well, at a May 13 House Judiciary Committee hearing, Polis asked Holder about which “objective processes” the feds are using to determine whether individuals are in “clear and unambiguous compliance with state law.”

Holder’s reply was basically “Depends,” so Polis asked about DEA agent Jeffrey Sweetin’s quote, “The time is coming when we go into a dispensary, we find out what their profit is, we

Woman arrested in baby’s death On Tuesday, June 1, a sixmonth-old baby died at Avista Hospital after the baby was brought to the hospital by the parents.

Investigators were told the parents found the infant unresponsive in his crib. Attempts were made to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival at the hospital.

That afternoon, at about 6 p.m., the mother was arrested in the death of the infant.

Police say the death of the infant was intentional and that the mother, Stephanie Rochester, 34, of Superior, has been arrested pursuant to an arrest warrant. The charges on the arrest warrant are for firstdegree murder and one count of child abuse resulting in death. As of press time, she was being held at the Boulder County Jail pending the posting of bond, which has been set at $750,000.

Home Depot runaways On Thursday, May 27, Boulder police responded to a theft in progress at Home Depot on the Twenty Ninth Street Mall. Staff witnessed three men pushing a shopping cart with four plastic spools of copper wire, valued at $1,046.99, attempting to leave the store without paying for the wire.

All three suspects fled the scene, one of them on foot, when the police arrived. Officers were able to apprehend and arrest an 18-yearold male. He was charged with theft and resisting arrest. The other suspects are still at large.

Employees said they had been alerted to wire spool thefts from other Home Depots in the area.

Dead man walking A 45-year-old man was arrested after personnel at Boulder Community Hospital told Boulder police that he was using the security number of a deceased person, in an apparent attempt to obtain pain medications on Thursday, May 27.

Employees said the suspect had been admitted to the hospital earlier in the month, and he acknowledged he had committed the same act at other hospitals in the Denver metro area. He was charged with

criminal attempted theft over $20,000, identity theft, fraud and deceit, and dissemination of false information to obtain hospital admission and care.

Man takes anger out on vehicle Boulder police were dispatched to the 2300 block of Pearl Street on a report of a man damaging a black vehicle on Thursday, May 27. Upon arrival, police observed an intoxicated man forcefully opening the front driver’s-side door of a Subaru Forester into a large pole.

The suspect ran southbound on 24th Street and fell down, and officers were able to arrest him. The suspect caused a significant amount of damage to the vehicle, damage valued at approximately $5,000.

The 20-year-old man was charged with first-degree criminal trespass, criminal mischief, obstruction, resisting arrest and minor in possession of alcohol.

So much for that job On Wednesday, May 26, a 25-year-old man was cited with careless driving after he struck a pedestrian as she was getting in her vehicle near 26th Street and Walnut Street. The man was looking down at an employment application in his car when he struck the rear bumper of the victim’s vehicle and then the victim. The female rolled onto the hood of his vehicle and then onto the ground. She suffered a head injury was transported to Boulder Community Hospital.

Slippery slope hiking On Sunday, May 30, at approximately 1:25 p.m., authorities were dispatched to the Mallory Cave trail on the report of a hiker who had slipped and gotten injured.

A 61-year-old Longmont woman had fallen and injured her right ankle while walking on the trail with a friend.

She was evacuated by members of Rocky Mountain Rescue Group and transported to Boulder Community Hospital for treatment.

Other responding agencies included the Boulder police, Pridemark Ambulance and the Open Space Mountain Rangers.

BOULDER WEEKLY INVESTIGATION ENDS THE PRACTICE OF SHACKLING INMATES IN LABOR

R

yan Owens caught her first case at age 27 after becoming addicted to methamphetamine. She was sent into treatment, but relapsed almost immediately after graduating. When she got into trouble again, she went on the run, afraid of being sent to jail.

A mother with two children, she was also pregnant.

She wasn’t on the run long, however, when law enforcement caught up with her. She spent her first five days in Denver City Jail heavily pregnant and sleeping on the floor on a dirty blanket. Then she was transferred to Denver County Jail, where she stayed for a time, before being transferred to El Paso County on her due date — and then back again.

During transport, she was kept in full restraints, including ankle shackles and a belly belt, an excruciating experience. Though she begged the guards to remove some of the shackles, they refused, instead joking about whether or not the trip would make her go into labor.

“It hurt so bad,” she says. “It was miserable. I cried the whole way down there and the whole way back.”

She was in Denver County Jail when she finally went into labor. She was brought to the hospital in wrist and ankle irons, then chained by her ankle to a hospital bed. The humiliation was extreme. Worse was her inability to make use of the comforts available to other women to help ease the pain of labor, such as the hottub.

The experience, she told the Colorado State Senate and House judiciary committees, left her feeling that she’d been treated “like an animal.”

I listened to Owens testify at the House Judiciary Committee hearing and watched as her testimony resonated with others in the audience, including a former inmate who had tears running down her face. And I feel great satisfaction in knowing that what happened to Owens will never happen again — at least not in 14 June 3, 2010

On Thursday, May 27, Gov. Bill Ritter signed Senate Bill 193, nicknamed “the shackling bill,” into law.

The bill was introduced and carried

by Sen. Evie Hudak, D-Westminster, who learned about the shackling of inmates in labor from a Boulder Weekly investigation into the treatment of pregnant inmates (“Pregnant in prison,” cover story, Feb. 18). Rep. Claire Levy, D-Boulder, sponsored the bill in the House.

When the law goes into effect on Jan. 1, it will regulate the use of shackles on inmates throughout pregnancy, prohibiting the use of shackles on inmates during labor and delivery, except under extreme circumstances where an inmate poses an immediate danger to herself or others or represents a threat of escape.

With the governor’s signature, Colorado became the ninth state to prohibit the shackling of inmates in labor.

For former inmates, like Owens, who gave birth while in custody, the new law offers a chance to heal one of the worst memories from their time behind bars.

“It’s so great,” she says. “That’s a memory that will never go away.

That’s how my son came into this world. I take full responsibility for the reasons that I was there, but the fact that nobody else has to go through that is huge to me. My [labor and birth] is done and over with. It is what it is. But the fact that this is a law now — it does heal.”

For the coalition of women’s groups and medical professionals who pushed for the bill’s passage, the new law marks a leap forward for the medical treatment of women inmates and for human rights in the state’s jails and prisons.

“This takes us out of the dark ages in the Department of Corrections and our jails,” said Sen. Hudak, “and it’s long overdue.”

Hill and even writing the first draft of the bill, the new law serves as validation for what I’ve always believed — that newspapers are still capable of bringing about significant change.

Disbelief and shame The toughest thing about launching Senate Bill 193 was lawmakers’ disbelief. Upon reading through the bill for the first time, many responded like Sen. Keith King, R-Colorado Springs.

“Do we know this really happens?” he asked.

King went on to become a vocal supporter of the bill when he learned that somewhere between 50 and 60 inmates were giving birth in chains each year in Colorado.

As my investigation revealed, how and when inmates were shackled depended entirely on where they were being held. In Boulder County, inmates were not shackled during labor, but in nearby Denver County, inmates were being shackled to their hospital beds by a long, heavy chain fixed to one ankle. In some mountain jurisdictions, women were actually being given furlough from jail to give birth and were allowed to have family with them in the hospital. DOC inmates, on the other hand, were being taken to the hospital in wrist restraints and sometimes ankle shackles and belly belts and were shackled to their beds by one extremity throughout labor — depending on which nurse and correctional officer were on duty.

Once these facts were laid out, most lawmakers were astonished and even ashamed.

Hudak says that compared to some other bills she’s carried, SB 193 wasn’t a difficult bill to explain to people. During the bill’s first hearing before the Senate Appropriations Committee, Hudak asked her fellow senators if any of them had ever given birth or been present when their spouses gave birth. She then asked whether they could imagine themselves or their wives trying to

escape.

“They finished the sentence before it came out of my mouth, and they really understood that it’s ridiculous that a woman in labor would try to escape or would be successful if she tried,” Hudak says.

SB 193 prohibits the use of belly shackles and ankle irons on pregnant inmates at any point during their pregnancy, out of concern that shackling in this manner poses a danger to the fetus, uterus, and placenta should the belt put pressure on the inmate’s pregnant abdomen or should the inmate trip and fall.

The bill also prohibits the use of any kind of shackles on inmates during labor and delivery, except in extreme cases when an inmate poses an immediate danger to herself or others or represents a serious flight risk. If they are shackled, it must be done using the least restrictive restraint necessary for maintaining safety, and the incident must be detailed and saved as a public record.

Further, the bill enables inmates to have a member of the medical staff present during her strip-search on return to jail or prison.

The bill moved swiftly through the legislative process. It received the unanimous support of the Senate and passed with a single “no” vote in the House, cast by Rep. Mark Waller, R-Colorado Springs.

“The only hesitation came from the Department of Corrections,” Hudak says.

DOC, which runs the state’s prisons, originally took a neutral position, but perhaps showed its true stance by attaching a significant cost to the bill, claiming that they would need to hire more guards if they left laboring inmates unshackled.

But the fiscal note was struck from the bill by the Senate Appropriations Committee during a hearing in which Sen. Bob Bacon, R-Fort Collins, admitted to feeling ashamed that Colorado needed a bill like SB 193.

“I was particularly pleased in the Boulder Weekly

Senate that they took the fiscal note off because they didn’t believe that additional guards would be necessary,” Hudak says.

After the fiscal note was removed, however, DOC took a more aggressive stance against the bill. There were indications that its representatives would ask the governor for a veto and look for ways to stall the bill until it died if it weren’t amended.

Rep. Claire Levy worked with DOC to craft a version of the bill they could support, removing language from the House version that would have prohibited shackling inmates during transportation to or from a medical facility for childbirth, as well as during the immediate postpartum recovery period. Had it not been for those changes, Levy says the bill might have faced an uphill battle with the governor.

“I’m sorry that the Department of Corrections was successful in weakening the bill in the House,” Hudak says. “They were more successful in convincing the representatives that shackling was necessary during transport. I still don’t believe it is. But as is common in the legislative process, you might not get everything you want, but this goes a long way.”

Because of Levy’s efforts, DOC testified in favor of the bill.

Although the law doesn’t go into effect until Jan. 1, DOC plans to implement new procedures before then.

“As you are aware, our procedures were in place and different than some other jurisdictions prior to passing of the bill,” Joanie Shoemaker, deputy director of prisons for DOC, wrote in an e-mail to Boulder Weekly. “We have begun the process of changing policy and designing the tracking tool. We will implement as soon as that is finalized even if the bill has not been enacted.”

Reproductive justice Julie Krow has heard more about women’s experiences being shackled during labor than most people. Krow oversees The Haven, a residential substance-abuse treatment program for pregnant and parenting women.

About 70 percent of the clientele at The Haven have entered the program after being diverted from the criminal justice system or after being released from jail or prison.

“To me, the thing that was really telling was that the experiences were all over the map,” Krow says. “Some of the women were traumatized by the experience and had had a terrible experience. Some people from some of the rural mountain towns said it wasn’t like that for them.”

It seemed to Krow that such a wide discrepancy in how inmates were treated meant that there was room for compassion — and consistency — in shackling policies.

Krow testified in favor of SB 193 and discussed the bill with her clients during the legislative process. She was pleased to hear that the governor had signed the bill and said her clients are also happy to learn that the shackling of inmates during labor is coming to an end in Colorado.

For Dr. Eliza Buyers, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Denver and the legislative chair of the Colorado Section of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the new law means safer pregnancies and

“The issue of shackling pregnant and laboring women is one that the American Congress of OB/GYNs has been talking about on a national level for well over five years,” Buyers says.

“Providers have become involved in this issue because, beyond the physically demeaning aspects of this practice, there are also serious medical concerns.”

Those concerns include everything from possible damage to the fetus, uterus or placenta caused by pressure from belly shackles to delays in emergency treatment caused by an inability to remove shackles quickly enough.

“Labor is a dynamic, physical and, at times, very rapid process,” Buyers says. “The use of restraints on pregnant inmates is medically hazardous, and prohibiting this practice is necessary for health providers to deliver safe medical care.”

ACOG had been hoping to present a bill in Colorado next year, but when Buyers heard a bill was being drafted, she immediately became involved. She brought a medical perspective to the drafting process and

testified at both the Senate and House judiciary hearings.

Lorena Garcia, director of policy and organizing for COLOR, the Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights, also had plans to push for a ban on the shackling of inmates in labor next year. When she learned that an effort was under way this year, she became actively involved in the process of drafting and lobbying for the bill.

“COLOR’s mission is reproductive justice, and being able to give birth in a humane fashion no matter the location is a piece of reproductive justice,” Garcia says. “With the passage of SB 193, it brings us a step closer now that even women who are incarcerated can also have reproductive justice.”

Garcia says she was surprised and gratified when the bill received such overwhelming bipartisan support.

“I’m very pleased to see that the state of Colorado has a vested interest in ensuring that one of our most vulnerable populations is treated fairly, and that population is incarcerated women,” she says.

Garcia says she also finds hope in the fact that, in the end, it wasn’t a lobbyist or activist group that brought the issue of shackling pregnant inmates to the table.

“I think this process being driven by a citizen and a constituent proves that there is value in our everyday Coloradans advocating for rights,” she says.

For Owens, who graduates from treatment later this month and whose son recently turned 2, testifying before state lawmakers was an empowering experience.

“It was extremely empowering, even though my hands were shaking,” she says. “The only thing that kept going through my head was that people need to hear what really happens.

People need to hear from the inside.

So many times people don’t hear people like us.”

This time, thanks in part to Owens, people in the highest levels of state government got the message loud and clear.

“I think the fact that another woman won’t have to feel [what I felt] is amazing,” she says. “It’s huge to me.

Under the skin What was really behind CU diversity czar Sallye McKee’s resignation?

he press release was innocuous enough, on its face, like so many others sent by the university about com-

ings and goings within the administration.

However, as is probably true with

ceived walls around the “ivory tower.” Diversity can enhance students’ critical thinking skills and learning environment, exposing them to other cultures and opening their minds, so that they are prepared to step out into the world and compete in a global economy, among other things. Back when CU had bona fide academics as presidents, diversity made a regular appearance among the goals in their strategic plans.

For example, in 2001, boosting diversity was one of the five goals that former President Betsy Hoffman outlined in her plan, “Vision 2010.”

Well, it’s 2010, and over the past decade, the percentage of students of color has increased by only

many other resignations, there is a story behind this one that goes beyond the glib PR explanation that a vice chancellor will step down June 30 “for personal and family reasons.”

Sources say that the University of Colorado at Boulder’s diversity chief, Sallye McKee, had a tenure of nearly three years that was marked by controversy as well as formal complaints filed against her with CU’s Office of Discrimination and Harassment.

They describe situations in which McKee allegedly made questionable hiring decisions and inappropriate comments based on race and religion.

Others say the complaints have arisen simply because disgruntled, entrenched employees didn’t like that McKee made changes.

*** Diversity, in a university environment, is a big deal. And it’s not just about the number of ethnic minorities anymore. Among other things, it’s about the number of women, ensuring access for the disabled and creating a welcoming environment for homosexuals. And, in recent years, it has sometimes meant “intellectual diversity,” which has been construed as code for finding more conservative faculty to offset the liberal majority, and ensuring that leftleaning professors aren’t attempting to inculcate impressionable college students with their “socialist” or “anti-American” ideas. (But that’s another story.

Diversity initiatives can open doors to groups of people that haven’t traditionally had access to public higher education, and they can break down the per16 June 3, 2010

about 1.5 percent, to 14.4 percent of the student body. Meanwhile, in 2007, the proportion of underrepresented minority high school graduates in Colorado was about 25 percent, according to the report “The Status of Minorities and Women in Colorado’s Higher Education Institutions” by Lauren Sanz.

The goal, say diversity officials, is to achieve a percentage of minorities on campus that reflects the proportions in the state.

But CU-Boulder faces many challenges, including what is known as the “pipeline” problem: There are a limited number of minority students who graduate from high school in Colorado and meet the campus’s relatively high admissions standards.

“It’s a marathon, not a sprint,” McKee is fond of

saying when asked about the slow progress of diversity efforts. *** Perhaps in an effort to accelerate that pace, McKee was hired in August 2007 by former CU-Boulder Chancellor Bud Peterson about a year after Peterson had taken the helm of the campus. He had just elevated the title — and pay — of the diversity chief to that of a cabinet position: vice chancellor for diversity, equity and community engagement.

McKee, who had previously worked at CU as director of the Minority Arts and Sciences Program from 1993 to 1996, was brought in at an annual salary of $160,000. During the interim, she had held executive-level positions at Bowling Green State University, the University of Denver, the University of Minnesota, East Carolina University (where she resigned because her husband was not given a job there, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education) and Metropolitan State College of Denver.

The hiring itself was controversial, not just because some preferred another of the three announced semifinalists, but because the incumbent, Christine Yoshinaga-Itano, was not encouraged to apply for the job. In April 2007, the Pan Asian Faculty and Staff Association wrote a letter to former Provost (and now Chancellor) Phil DiStefano decrying the decision to disregard Yoshinaga-Itano and questioning why the new position wouldn’t continue to be held by a faculty member with a Ph.D. Yoshinaga-Itano, a professor of speech, language and hearing sciences, told Boulder Weekly that while she was not encouraged to apply, she did so anyway, at the behest of the search committee. “But I told them it wouldn’t make a difference, because [DiStefano and Peterson] didn’t want me,” she says.

“The recommendations from the search committee are only as good as the people who receive those recommendations. … You give the impression that you are including people, but you already know what you’re going to do, so you do it. You try to ensure equity. But equity can only be assured by the people who make the decisions.”

She says she doesn’t know why Peterson was leaning toward McKee, “but it was loaded in a particular direction. … The truth is, it was badly done because they didn’t follow the process.” *** Carmen Williams, who recently stepped down as assistant vice president for diversity for the entire CU system, says that after McKee arrived, she did a lot of Boulder Weekly

restructuring to streamline reporting lines and measure effectiveness. While some of her personnel moves were controversial, Williams says, McKee is all about proving whether methods are effective — and if they’re not, getting rid of them.

Williams says McKee helped shepherd some postive trends related to the retention of students of color.

“Her only agenda is the well-being of the students,” she says. “I think she’s great for that campus, and has not always gotten the support she deserves.”

Recruitment, on the other hand, is always a challenge, Williams says, especially among African-American and Latino students, because they often get more financial aid at other institutions. She explains that CU has seemed to struggle in two key areas when it comes to boosting diversity and, in a university system starved for state funding, they boil down to resources: financial aid and outreach.

Indeed, in some ways, it is about the money. Higher education institutions may not legally give scholarships based solely on race or ethnicity. But donations can be earmarked for firstgeneration students, for instance, or for those who are interested in minority studies.

In other decisions, like student admissions, the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the ruling that race can be used as one — but not the only — factor. In other words, if two students, one black and one white, are equal in virtually every other way when it comes to admissions standards, like grade-point averages and standardized test scores, the university can accept the black student over the white student. The justification, according to Supreme Court justices, is that that equitable access to education among all races has not yet been reached, that affirmative action is still needed, and that the faculty have determined that diversity is crucial to the learning environment, a decision that is subject to the protections of academic freedom.

And yet, CU attorneys determined more than a decade ago — much to student activists’ chagrin — that the university may not set numerical goals for the percentage of minority students it plans to enroll each year. *** Granted, McKee has faced an uphill battle. But some sources who wish to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation say many of her actions crossed a line and were controversial, if not inappropriate.

ed to report to McKee, which some say was an effort to justify the new vice chancellor title. Others say that organizationally it made sense to move the precollegiate program office, disability services and the Center for Multicultural Affairs (CMA) under the diversity office, especially since the last two came from the student affairs division, which some say was too large and unwieldy.

The former vice chancellor of student affairs, Ron Stump, says he doesn’t think the division was too big or unwieldy.

“Any time you’ve got change like that, people are disappointed because they felt like they’ve built up a program and have done good work,” Stump says. “From an organizational perspective, it made sense, but in student affairs it was more about we were losing colleagues and had been invested in those areas, and something was being lost. To lose them was a disappointment. … We thought it was something special and people were working well together.”

Stump subsequently left to become director of the alumni association.

Other administrators, including the former dean of students and the CMA director, also left the university, although neither returned calls from Boulder Weekly. Still other current and former CU employees — even those unaffected by the changes — simply declined to discuss the situation unless they were guaranteed anonymity.

*** The changes that McKee made in the CMA were especially striking. She hired Polly McLean, a CU journalism professor, to conduct an evaluation of the department, claiming that such a review had not been done in the center’s 40-year history. McLean conducted an analysis and prepared a new strategic plan for the center that called for a host of changes, including shifting away from the center’s counseling approach toward an academic model, and ensuring that all new hires have master’s degrees. Several employees had already left the CMA, and the plan recommended that all vacancies be filled with “professional-exempt” staff — in other words, at-will employees who do not have the same rights, pay scales and job protections of the state’s “classified” employees, and are therefore more “flexible,” but who can also be more susceptible to political pressures.

Asked to explain that move, McKee told Boulder Weekly that CU’s peer universities are moving away from classified systems, and that June 3, 2010 17

classified employees need to be paid overtime. She said that when an office has a small budget, professionalexempt staff provide more flexibility because they can be kept on salary and work whatever number of hours per week is necessary to get the job done.

But CU Human Resources Executive Director Candice Bowen says that overtime eligibility is not determined by whether a position is exempt or classified; it is determined by guidelines under the Fair Labor Standards Act. McKee’s own office budget, not including the departments that report to her, has ranged from $682,393 in 2007 to $420,187 this year, including her current annual salary of $167,680, according to documents obtained in an open-records request. *** The last two pages of the strategic plan for the CMA are devoted to a discussion of how to deal with employee resistance to the changes.

“Some may never adjust,” McLean wrote. “In one organizational change effort on Capitol Hill in Washington that I was involved with, I found that staff would be a detriment to the change process and would sabotage it at every effort, therefore I recommended the termination of 18 staff members. I say this to point out that real organizational change does not occur without people choosing to leave or being terminated.”

According to the documents obtained through the open-records request, three positions under the diversity office were converted from classified to exempt status. And of the 16 hires that have been made under McKee since November 2007, all but one were done without a search.

(Search waivers — forms authorizing the elimination of a search — were obtained from the human resources office for each one.)

CU-Boulder spokesperson Bronson Hilliard says the searches were waived because there were internal candidates who were qualified, and that then-CU President Hank Brown’s guidance was to conduct internal searches first.

“Sallye saw a lot of talented people and took advantage of it,” he says.

Still, sources say the CMA may be moved out of the diversity office and back into the student affairs division.

DiStefano told Boulder Weekly that he intends to name an internal candidate as interim vice chancellor for diversity, and that he will ask that person to evaluate the organizational structure in the coming months.

*** McKee makes a good first impression. She has a bright smile, she is warm and friendly, and she hugs at the drop of a hat.

In an interview with Boulder Weekly, in which she was joined by seven members of her leadership team and Hilliard, McKee discusses all of the great work her office is doing. And it is great work. The list of diversity programs is long, and those based in individual units, schools and colleges seem especially effective. Many can be traced to the late Ofelia Miramontes, who was the director of the diversity office before she succumbed to breast cancer in July 2005.

McKee says she patterned many of her initiatives after Miramontes’ 1999 “Blueprint for Action” and Peterson’s “Flagship 2030” strategic plan.

Diversity officials outlined their efforts during the group interview, noting that when a donor wants to target a gift too narrowly, only to people of color or those with disabilities, for example, they work with the donor to broaden the terms of the gift so that the money targets the intended student group without breaking the law.

McKee stresses that one of her priorities has been inclusion, and that the CMA previously tended to pair student clients with someone of their same ethnicity. (It’s a claim that CMA supporters deny.) McKee says someone of any ethnicity should be able to serve any client.

“We see difference as a competitive edge instead of a wedge,” McKee says.

But when the conversation turns to the controversial changes she made in the CMA, McKee ends the meeting before its scheduled conclusion.

She says the analyses and reports that McLean made prior to the final version of the strategic plan are no longer available and therefore weren’t produced in the open-records request.

Requests for a follow-up phone interview have been declined. *** One former employee in the CMA, Frances Muñoz, says her employment was terminated illegally.

She says her boss notified her that her job was being abolished. But then someone from human resources contacted her to inform her that she had been improperly terminated. She was told that she could go back to work, talk to her attorney, or resign, and she says she was encouraged to resign. If she didn’t choose one of those three options, Muñoz says she was told, her Boulder Weekly

record would reflect that she had abandoned her job.

“I had been a loyal and dedicated employee for 15 years,” she recalls. “I decided to go back and show them that they couldn’t push me around.”

After calling her supervisor repeatedly about resuming work, Muñoz says she heard no response, “and I got tired of waiting, so I just showed up.”

They assigned her another job.

“It was just crappy stuff they didn’t want to do,” she says. “They were doing everything they could to make it uncomfortable.”

Muñoz adds that McKee “just wanted to get everyone out of that department. She was retaliating against those who showed support for [the former director].”

“Sallye’s going to get rid of anyone who’s not a ‘yes’ person,” Muñoz says.

Yoshinaga-Itano, the former diversity chief, declines to comment on McKee specifically. But she says that “there are no diverse opinions.

Everyone’s singing the same song. I guess they think things run smoother that way. But no one has the energy to fight the administration, because they hurt you too badly.

“It’s easier to take the path of least resistance.” *** Individuals who reportedly filed complaints against McKee with the CU Office of Discrimination and Harassment (ODH) did not return calls from Boulder Weekly. Bowen, the HR director who oversees that office, said reports on such complaints — and the ensuing investigations — are confidential and only submitted to the accuser, the accused and their supervisors.

Boulder Weekly asked McKee about the ODH complaints earlier this spring. “In accordance with ODH practices in responding to inquiries such as this, I can neither confirm nor deny whether there have been complaints,” she replied via e-mail.

She denies running out any employees. And when asked whether she gave preference to AfricanAmericans in hiring decisions, McKee, who is African-American, replied, “Hiring decisions are made based on the person’s qualifications for the positions. I have had no hiring or employment preference for African-Americans. I have made 14 hires that reflect a range of ethnicities and backgrounds.”

Her last day is June 30, according to the news release.

“I want to thank Dr. McKee for Boulder Weekly

her service to CU-Boulder,” Chancellor DiStefano said in the release. “As CU’s first vice chancellor for diversity, equity and community engagement, she has strengthened the university’s ties to diverse communities in Denver and throughout Colorado, and positioned us to make more progress on diversity issues involving students, faculty and staff.”

*** Regardless of the reasons for McKee’s departure, some say it marks a step backwards — or at least sideways — for campus diversity efforts.

Yoshinaga-Itano, the former diversity chief who was passed over for the new vice chancellor job, told Boulder Weekly that the same pattern just keeps repeating.

“It’s not just this, it’s endemic to the university,” she says, explaining that in most cases, new administrators hired at CU are well-intentioned, but they seem to have no appreciation for the work that has preceded their arrival.

“It overlooks an amazing amount of effort by people who have poured their whole lives and careers into making things better,” YoshinagaItano says. “What’s saddest to me is a history of people committed to diversity, and new people come in and disregard their opinions, work and programs that are already here and that have come about because of people’s blood, sweat and tears.

“When you don’t value the work of people who have been here a long time, it’s a mistake,” she says. “If you prioritize one group over another, you disenfranchise one group; you create conflict. It’s like a broken record, and people who have been here a long time are pretty cynical.”

Diversity efforts begin to make progress, according to YoshinagaItano, and “then the rug gets pulled out, and it’s 20 years ago. And then you ask those people to invest themselves once again. They see no acknowledgement, and the administration keeps changing. It’s always a different group of people.

“When these people left, they did not have a good feeling for this place,” she says of those who left because of McKee and the reorganizations.

“They were not treated well, considering the amount of work they put in.

I think that’s what makes me saddest.

They put their heart and soul into making CU a better place.

“Lots of friends are gone,” Yoshinaga-Itano concludes. “If we had just kept the people we hired, we’d be a very diverse place.”

ou might be surprised that Lyons, best known as a national center for folk and bluegrass with its RockyGrass and Rocky Mt. Folk festivals, the RockyGrass Academy and dozens of other events through the year, has now become the home of a classical chamber music festival. But violinist MinTze Wu, the founder of Sounds of Lyons, is full of surprises.

Born in Taiwan and trained as a classical violinist at the Juilliard School of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Music, Wu played orchestral and chamber music in major concert halls and at festivals around the world. And then she settled in tiny (pop.

1,600) Lyons.

After a career devoted to the classical masters, she decided to take up traditional Celtic fiddling — and then combined her new skill with the most demanding pieces by J.S. Bach.

Living in a mecca for bluegrass and folk music, she decided to start a classical chamber music festival. And then, with no training in managing such a complex event, she put together the first Sounds of Lyons last year in just four months, from the first notions of a festival to the first notes of the opening concert.

“I’m somebody that I want to make anything work,” she says.

Evidently, because Sounds of Lyons is not just working, it’s thriving. But if you are thinking of classical chamber music as three or four old guys in formal dress playing before a silent congregation of music worshippers, here’s another surprise. In Lyons, Wu says, “The idea that classical music could jump out of its concert attire and to be bare feet, groovy and theatrical has been wildly embraced.”

And by the way, she means bare feet literally: she always performs barefoot. This is part of her musical personality — “I literally love the feel of the feet on the floor,” she says — but it’s also a sign of the relaxed feel of the festival. There’s no formal dress code for the performers. Concerts take place in intimate spaces that bring the audience and performers close together. And Wu often talks to the audience before the performance begins.

As for “groovy and theatrical,” that pretty much describes Wu’s entire approach. Her goal is to create an experience that pulls the audience completely into the music. “For me, it’s finding ways to make people feel like they [are] experiencing what we as performers are experiencing,” she says. “What I want to create is this: It’s sort of like you go into a movie.

You are just in that experience yourself from the beginning to the end. You don’t come out of it. And see MASH-UP Page 22

by that you are able to be just really in the depth of the experience.”

The most obviously theatrical element of the festival is the first concert, which will have stories told in words interacting with the music. This is now part of a successful formula that Wu developed for last year’s festival: an opening concert that uses words and music to dramatize a story, a second concert that is more traditional and a closing concert that creates unexpected musical connections.

For this year’s opener, Wu took the title Metamorphosis from Greek legends, in which the gods change their form. But the stories were not the starting point for the program. In fact, Wu says, it’s never as simple as “me sitting down and saying, ‘OK, which text am I going to take and which music am I going to take.’” Instead, she thinks about different things that fascinate her. “And then at some point I feel like, ‘Oh! They will be [very] compatible!’”

In this case a little known string quartet by Polish composer Karol Szymanowski was the starting point.

It was a piece that Wu wanted to play because to her, “that quartet is so out-of-worldly.” She added two other pieces from roughly the same “color world” — Ravel’s String Quartet and a piece by his French contemporary Eric Satie — and chose some out-of-thisworld stories from Greek mythology. For this performance, Lyons’s Rogers Hall, a comfortable space that is used as a church fellowship hall when it is not hosting musical performances, has just the right blend of good acoustics and intimacy.

The Sage String Quartet, the festival’s resident ensemble, will be joined by clarinetist Daniel Silver from the University of Colorado, bodhran player Steve Wharton and guitarist Jon Sousa for three wide ranging programs: Metamorphosis, music by Eric Satie, Maurice Ravel and Karol Szymanowski, performed with readings of ancient Greek myths as retold by young writers from Lyons, at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 5, in Rogers Hall on High Street in Lyons.

The Legendary, the most traditional of the three concerts, featuring music by Beethoven and Brahms, at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 6, in Lyons Community Church.

explore the connections between two masters of the classical tradition. It will be played in the Lyons Community Church, fittingly the most traditional and formal concert setting of the festival, but still a space that is comfortable and welcoming.

The final concert moves to the Wildflower Pavilion at Planet Bluegrass, set against the dramatic rock cliffs of the St. Vrain River. This is the most experimental program, even though it is built around

the music of J.S. Bach. The concert will open and close with the Sage Quartet playing music by the contemporary Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, who is stylistically distant but spiritually close to Bach. The centerpiece will be Wu playing Bach’s Partita in D minor for solo violin, one of the most austerely beautiful and demanding pieces of any violinist’s repertoire. And in the most surprising stylistic juxtaposition imaginable, Wu will improvise on traditional Celtic fiddle tunes between the movements of the Bach.

“Improvisation was very much a part of Baroque playing,” Wu explains. “And actually the more I play folk music the more I realize how similar the sound and the structure are, and how actually natural it is to go from one to the other.

“I gave a solo version of this program … and the audience gave me the feedback that they were so stunned with the emotional seamlessness of the production.”

Apart from the Celtic fiddling, the programming is clearly a departure for Lyons and Planet Bluegrass.

But here is one more surprise: Even though Bach and Beethoven had not been regulars on the local music scene, Wu never met any resistance to the idea of a classical festival.

“That’s what was so surprising to me,” she says.

“There is such an appetite for more music here.

People here, they want music, they really welcome something new. I realized that people had been waiting for something like this to happen here.

“I almost feel like as soon as I started thinking about [Sounds of Lyon], the wind is just coming my way.”

Nicky Bomba warms up for Red Rocks at the Draft House

D

on’t get him wrong: Australian multi-instrumentalist Nicky Bomba loves drumming with his brother-in-law John Butler’s trio, which plays Red Rocks on June 4.

But he loves doing his own thing, too. And fresh off the 2009 release of his first-ever solo record Planet Juice, which finds the Malta-born musician playing guitar and singing on upbeat, danceable reggae tunes, Bomba is breaking from the trio’s touring schedule to come to the Boulder Draft House for an improvised night of music backed by local reggae players The Rude Boys.

But if the prospect of playing an unrehearsed gig at a bar he’s never been to with players he’s never met before intimidates him, Bomba doesn’t let on. After talking to him, you end up thinking that he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Well, we’re not going to be practicing,” Bomba says in a smooth Aussie lilt when asked when he would make time to come practice with his one-night band. “I like to keep the magic on stage. I like to make it as though it’s kind of art talking, a creation in progress, and that’s sort of same wavelength,” Bomba says. “It’s not a situation ... eyes open, ears open, kind of tuned in to what’s like, let’s see how fast I can play. It’s all about the happening at the moment. And that’s actually part of music. And reggae, especially, is quite kind of simple the joy of doing it. Colorado. The dates ended up falling through due to Bomba’s already busy schedule, but eventually somebody floated the idea of playing at the Draft House, and a guy involved with the John Butler Trio tour recommended he call The Rude Boys.

“I made a phone call, and we talked over the phone, and it all flowed very naturally,” Bomba says. “I love when that stuff happens.”

He says he’ll play guitar and sing when he’s not drumming at the Draft House gig and that there should be a welcoming and loose feel for anyone with a horn who wishes to come on stage. He expects some friends of The Rude Boys to step in for a few tunes throughout the night.

“All musicians are welcome, you know, just to get up and play on a horn, a flute or a violin. It’s all very much communal. One of the things I think I do well is orchestrate and organize things. It’s not just a shambles. There’s a good sense of order about it. But it’s all about fun, really. You know, at the end of the day, my motto is love and happiness.”

Things are going well for Bomba. Freed from obligations to his other projects in Australia, which include a 10-piece ska orchestra and a host of smaller bands, he feels like he’s finally free to make music with the John Butler Trio (Bomba and Butler had toured as a duo before recording the 2010 JBT release April Uprising), and he’s enjoying the blazing chemistry the band has developed.

“We’re on this particular adventure, you know. It’s a beautiful thing. I was able to record the album and able to tour,” he says. “I just had a fantastic night playing on the beach in Malta where I was born, and when I got back to Australia for a break, I played with [my band] Bomba and the other bands I’ve got. …

I’m kind of enjoying the journey, at the moment. I feel like I’m in a nice position.”

Making whatever music you can MarchFourth Marching Band is manically fun

tart with a gritty New Orleans street-band influence — all fun, all music, all party. Throw in more musical influences than you can count, from Eastern European gypsy grass to George Clinton funk to Bugs Bunny cartoons, and you’re getting close.

Add a sizable percussion section, fire breathers, jugglers, dancers, a healthy appreciation for marching band costumes and a sense of humor, and you begin to approach what MarchFourth Marching Band is all about.

It’s hard to describe MarchFourth Marching Band without seeing them live.

(As band leader and bass player John Averill says, “We’re actually just kind of a marching band in disguise.”) The band’s latest album, the 2009 release Rise Up, sounds like a (stationary) big band with a drum corps, but the album’s tracks are so eclectic it’s hard to nail the sound into one particular genre. Averill, who spent most of the interview with Boulder Weekly following a fourfoot garter snake around Topanga Canyon, Calif., finds labeling the band’s music just as hard as the rest of us.

“Our sound has really evolved [since the band’s inception in 2003],” Averill says. “I think the initial ingredients that we had when we started were like Rebirth Brass Band, Fela Kuti, and definitely samba, and Eastern European gypsy-grass. Those were sort of the initial ingredients that we started with, then we started adding a lot more jazz and funk and rock since then. A lot of our newer material is pretty hard-hitting in a big dancey, funk-rock mode.”

It starts to make sense as you listen to the album.

The band has more than 40 people contributing when back home in Portland, Ore. — about 20 came along for the tour — and Averill says about 12 people write the band’s songs. That’s a lot of influences, especially

considering how the band picked up many of the horn players after gigs.

“Most of the songs are written by the horn players.

And some of them have some really interesting elements that they’re putting together in these songs.

You go from some New Orleans funky thing to some almost math rock kind of thing to this gypsy breakdown. We have this one song that’s this sort of drum and bass with a cowboy sort of gallop. It’s all over the place,” Averill says.

Managing more than 20 people can no doubt be frustrating and challenging at times, but Averill manages to keep a cool head. It helps that the band is diva-free.

“I just try to guide where I think the project needs to go at any given moment,” Averill says. “It’s like a chariot being pulled by 20 horses or something. If the horses decide they want to go this way, all you can do is try to steer it.”

clapping, multi-layered cascading horns, and the rough melodic chanting you get when instrumentalists try to sing, all tied together by creative horn fills. The “Sing, Sing, Sing”-inspired drums of “Dynomite” are so infectious they turn casual listeners into amateur tabletop drummers. “Nightmarika” sounds like the bastard offspring of the West Side Story “I like to live in America” riff and the harmonic minor scale. “Freestyle for Miles” shoots steroids into some classic Miles Davis tunes and blasts them out of the park, and “Powerhouse” is a loving cover of the instantly recognizable theme of every accident-prone factory ever to appear in a Looney Tunes cartoon. It’s a wild album, and it’s insanely fun to listen to.

“We don’t really try to write the same song twice, Averill says. “A lot of bands will have a hit and try to write songs in the vein of that hit. We don’t really do that. We just keep trying to explore different genres.

We’re not really bound by a genre, which is what makes us kind of different from other bands. Most bands have a genre, like, ‘We’re a rock band.’ But us, we’re not really a marching [band], we’re not really a funk band, we’re not really a New Orleans band at all. … I’m not sure what it is exactly.”

Whatever it is, it’s working. MarchFourth continues to grow in popularity, and the band recently passed one of those rock band milestones in hiring a booking agent. For Averill, it’s the payoff after hard years of doing everything under the sun trying to make it as a musician.

“Be careful what you ask for,” Averill cautions. “I definitely asked the universe for a band, but I didn’t specify how big it would be.”

Peter Pan flies high at BDT

ust to make sure we’re all on the same page, the title of this review in no way implies that Boulder’s Dinner Theatre’s Peter Pan somehow manages to incorporate references to the medical marijuana dispensaries that have cropped up (heh, heh) on seemingly every other block in Boulder County over the past few months. No, BDT’s Peter Pan eschews topical, adult humor in a favor of the childhood whimsy more commonly associated with J. M. Barrie’s classic fantasy, and it’s all the better for it.

This Peter Pan arrives not only sans pot jokes, it dashes forth without a trace of irony or tongue in cheek genre shout outs. This is truly a child’s Peter Pan. Or, now that I think on it, perhaps it’s really a mother or grandfather’s Peter Pan as it is stripped of all the self-awareness that children these days have come to expect from fantasy material and surrounds it with top-of-the-line proworks like the Shrek series. Regardless, this is a sweet duction values. biggest, most impressive pieces of set design I’ve seen from BDT in ages. It virtually fills the stage during the climactic confrontation between Hook’s hearties and Pan’s lost boys. Kudos to Scenic Designer Amy Campion.

Joanie Brosseau-Beyette plays Pan — a short-odds casting choice for anyone familiar with BDT’s usual suspects — and never shines brighter than in the smaller moments, like when Pan is startled by Wendy as he snoops for his lost shadow.

Brain Norber, another BDT regular, puts on Hook’s hook and swings it about with obvious relish. The rest of the cast, including BDT mainstays Wayne Kennedy, Shelly Cox-Robie, Brian Jackson, A.K. Klimpke and Alicia Dunfee along with a handful of children making their BDT and/or professional acting debuts, round the cast out nicely.

Peter Pan is such a success that superlatives seem inadequate, so allow me to illustrate how outstanding it is in another manner. There was, literally, a busload of middle schoolers at the performance I attended. I, for one, can think of any number of situations in which I would want to be as far away as possible from a large group of kids that age. A screening of any of the Twilight movies. A shopping mall — any shopping mall — within a month of the prom or two months of Christmas. A bris.

Yet even a gaggle of tweens, cell phones and all, were powerless before Peter Pan. It was they who led the cheering of Pan and Wendy. It was they who clapped loudest for Tink. It was even they who booed and hissed that mean ol’ Captain Hook. And really, if that doesn’t prove just how transcendent BDT’s Peter Pan is, then I’m not quite sure what would.

The sex behind population control

A

s taboo as it is to talk about sexual pleasure in the bedroom, talking about population control can be even more contentious. We need to have sex to make babies — that’s obvious. But in a world that is running out of room and resources, we would do well to consider how many we have. And unfortunately, if we maintain silence around this essential topic, we will have too much global stress for sex.

In his book The Population Bomb, Paul Ehrlich discusses how population control is shrouded in controversy from past fears of racism, eugenics, colonialism, forced sterilization, forced family planning, abortion, contraception and sex. Earlier thinkers have not carved a smooth path to tackle this topic either. In 1974, Henry Kissinger advocated for the restriction of food aid to poor nations to curb population growth. Two years later, Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi forced millions of poor men to be sterilized to limit growth. Both were most likely influenced by sociologist Robert Malthus, who in 1798 painted population control in a biased and mathematical manner. His moral framework portrays how poor people who grow their numbers irresponsibly will be kept in check by natural selection via their own bad habits and addictions. Obviously, he did not live in Boulder or Aspen and account for all the rich people who also irresponsibly have bad habits and addictions — and who by the way, have much larger carbon footprints with consistent air travel and a car for each person in the family. Yet our problem in the West is not overpopulation, but rather, overconsumption. For instance, two American kids have the same carbon footprint as 337 Bangladeshi kids.

Yet solving overpopulation need not be done with eugenics, sterilization or starving. In Iran and some places in India, they are solving the issue by empowering more women to read. Research has shown that literacy rates directly correlate with fertility. In the Indian town of West Bengal, literacy is 60 percent for men and 33 percent for women. There, fertility equals four children per household. In Kerala, India, literacy is 94 percent for Boulder Weekly

men and 88 percent for women, and fertility is below the replacement rate, at 1.9 children per household. In Iran, the fertility rate dropped from 7 in 1980 to 1.7 today. They attributed their success to education for girls, along with free access to birth control, and media and government mobilization around advertising the importance of contraception. Mother Jones magazine promotes literacy for women as a key element in reducing overpopulation. They state, “Whether we are a world of 8, 9.1 or 10.5 billion people in 2050 will be decided in no small part by the number of illiterate women on Earth.”

The irony is that the more educated we are, the less we are having children — thus contributing toward our own intellectual extermination. You would think more smart people would be eager to pass on their genes. But they prefer to play with the letter salads that come after their last names, like Jenni Skyler, Ph.D.: no husband, no kid, no pet, one plant (which I remember to water once a month). Am I, and the others who refrain from having kids, just shooting myself in the foot? Am I really just the façade of a smart person too obtuse to reproduce?

My colleague, Saj Gandhi-Razvi, disagrees. “Those without children can put more life energy towards their mission,” Razvi states. “Their voting influence may be lower, but their cultural influence is high because their life is not being chewed up by children.”

Then again, Razvi is a single psychotherapist with only two cats to account for. But his underlying point is that as a childless thinker, I’m still reproducing my ideas — my memes instead of my genes.

So as an educated environmentalist, I believe the solution lies in fewer people with fewer needs.

Less shopping, more bikes and buses. Less plastic bags, more latex condoms. Less sex for purely procreation, more sex for just pleasure. And if and when you do decide to have sex for procreation, at least have a lot of fun doing so!

lanche potential on a given slope. The beauty of late spring is that much of the pack stabilizes as precipitation diminishes. While it doesn’t eliminate the potential for slides and rock fall, it does stack the odds in your favor.

In order to catch the safest window of couloir climbing, you have to be up long before the early birds. Camping out at the base of a route and beginning your climb pre-dawn is good style. The cooler night air chills out solar-radiated slopes and helps solidify slush.

Waiting too long to get on the mountain can have perilous results. Even as early as 8 a.m., especially on south- and eastfacing slopes, the snow may be too mushy to hold protective pieces or to kick solid steps. Add to that, snowmelt often frees rocks and ice chunks that can hurtle down steep chutes with horrifying speed. Get out there early to ensure optimal conditions.

It always helps to go with a partner who has mountaineering experience.

There are many places to get your mountaineering chops down. The Colorado Mountain Club and the Colorado Mountain School are two places to meet people and take courses to learn the basic skills of self-arrest with an ice axe, how to belay on steep

snow slopes and how to place pickets and other essential pieces of protection. It is worth noting that many lowangle routes in Colorado don’t require ropes.

Gearing up Besides the requisite snow-condition hiking gear (waterproof pants and shell, gaiters, etc.), you’ll need a few pieces of specialized mountaineering gear. Sturdy boots are a must.

Crampons (spikes you affix to your boots) are also necessary.

Mountaineering crampons are often designed to attach to special boots, though there are quality crampons that can strap on to most types of winter footwear.

An ice axe and leash are also required, along with the proper knowledge of how to use them. A climbing harness, helmet, avalanche beacon, snow pickets and an alpineready rope round out the technical gear. While not all routes require extensive rope skills, experience is vital for safety and confidence — start with more moderate and non-technical routes and work your way up.

For a list of some wonderful intermediate couloirs that are close to the Denver/Boulder area, read on.

Skywalker Couloir on South Arapahoe Peak is accessed via the 4th of July Trailhead out of Eldora. The galactically named couloir has three different exit options and tops out on the 13,397-foot summit of South Arapahoe. Advanced climbers might want to try the North Star Couloir on North Arapahoe Peak and complete an exhilarating class 4 traverse between the north and south peaks.

Queen’s Way on Apache Peak can be reached via Brainard Lake and offers the perfect primer for those new to the mountaineering game.

Once you’ve practiced your self-arrest skills on St. Mary’s glacier, head up to James Peak and try Sky Pilot Couloir, the mildest route on James’ east face.

Advanced climbers can try Shooting Star or Super Star for more fun on James. Dragon’s Tail Couloir out of Emerald Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park reaches the summit of Flattop Mountain with a class 4 or 5 move thrown in for good measure when the conditions are right.

Dreamweaver on Mount Meeker is another classic climb that may require a bit of rock climbing gear/skills in the mix.

Finally, 14ers have their share of awesome routes. Try the Holy Cross Couloir or Angelica on Mount of the Holy Cross. The Angel of Shavano on Mount Shavano is another all-time favorite with great ski descent potential.

Getting out there and climbing the elegant lines of Colorado’s mountains is without a doubt one of the more thrilling experiences in the mountains — and the season is in full swing.

igh-tech training gear is not for everyone. Watches that record distance and time, beeping randomly if the pace is too slow or fast, can be distracting — and expensive.

Fitness enthusiasts interested in tracking their performance have low-tech options. There are many training logs that offer information, inspiration and a place to record performance with pen and paper — not gigabytes.

Feeling out food: Why we eat the things we do

T

T

he food that we put into our body affects how we feel, and who doesn’t want to feel good?

What we eat should nourish our bodies and harness our attitudes. From social pressures to evolutionary factors, the emerging field called the “psychology of eating” examines complex human behaviors relating to what we eat and why we eat it.

“The psychology of eating is perceived in society as concerning only anorexia, bulimia and extreme obesity,” says Marc David, a health and nutrition consultant and eating psychologist. “This is like defining health as ‘cancer, heart disease and diabetes.’ What’s more, anorexia, bulimia and extreme obesity cover about 0.1 percent of the population — a tiny fraction of people.”

What about the rest of us who have a body, a need to eat and a unique relationship with food?

Nutritionists, doctors and psychologists study the spectrum of eating behaviors, and people like David help us understand the eating psyche of our body and mind.

David is the founder and director of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, and is the author of The Slow Down Diet: Eating for Pleasure, Energy and Weight Loss, and Nourishing Wisdom: A Mind-Body Approach to Nutrition and Well Being.

He began exploring the psychology of eating as a child, learning to understand the mind, heart and soul of the eater. “I couldn’t help but notice the fantastic amount of pain and suffering in our culture around weight, body image, over-eating and health. Clearly, what to eat is only half the story of good nutrition.

The other half of the story is who we are as eaters,” David says.

Every person has a unique, ever-changing and compelling relationship with food and the body.

David explains that what we believe about food, body and life powerfully influences our behaviors, our health and our happiness. Dynamic eating psychology affirms the primary importance of everyone’s relation-

ship with food. “The concept sees food as a doorway into deeper parts of our inner world, and recognizes that our experience with food and body is intimately connected to, and influenced by, other primary areas in our lives — relationships, family, work, sexuality and our search for meaning and fulfillment.”

According to David, with people who are trying to make a change in unwanted habits that are automatic and unconscious, the only way to actually change is to introduce consciousness. “The ability to witness one’s self is a muscle that we have to develop.”

Humans learn certain behaviors through cultural, societal, familial and individual factors that are engrained in our systems, building habits that are hard to break. The concept of choice is complex, and the foods that we choose to eat arise from habits that have been formed early on. People have a familiar way of feeding themselves that feels comfortable because it is how we have always been. “Being a better eater is a natural outgrowth of bettering oneself in living. Life changes — so do diet and nutritional needs.

A one-man burrito trailer

fter hearing the distressing news that NBC plans to revive the James Garner private-eye series The Rockford Files, I’ve been revisiting this ’70s classic. While I was a bit more than a tot when the show first aired, I did recall seeing several episodes during my youth. What I didn’t notice were two of Rockford’s character quirks. First, as my friend

Mike points out, Rockford had a peculiar habit of leading women around by the elbow. Second, nearly all of his dining out involved eating tacos at beachfront dives.

With respect to dining, Rockford would feel right at home at La Choza, housed alongside the Sinclair gas station on the Diagonal Highway heading out of Boulder. It’s a minimalist operation, with one person taking orders and cooking out of a small trailer. There’s no seating, and you’re likely to see folks eating in their cars. The décor is best described as gravel parking lot with potholes. Most take their food to go, and one often sees customers taking back multiple orders for workplace colleagues.

peaking of tacos, Longmont’s Ichiban (2055 Ken Pratt Blvd., 303-4859848) has changed its hours from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and has reinvented itself as an Asian fast-food spot. It’s now featuring a Korean-style taco that combines spicy-sweet marinated pork with a peppery slaw atop a tortilla.

Korean tacos have become the coastal rage, particularly with the advent of Kogi, a mobile L.A. operation selling these fusion treats. Boulder now has a mobile taco truck of its own, the pink-colored Comida. The menu is available at http://eatcomida.com/, and updates regarding the truck’s location are found at http://twitter.com/eatcomida. hamburgers and hot dogs until the 3 p.m. closing time. Available meats include chicken, carne asada, buche (pork stomach) and shredded beef. As the sole staffer is preoccupied with cooking, customers order when he steps up to the window asking for the next

order. Once the order is made, customers can then step over to the gas station to pick up a soft drink.

Foreign correspondent friend Cynthia went on the lighter side with a $2.25 tostada al pastor, featuring pork marinated with chile and fruit. Despite

the modest price tag, the portion was big enough to serve as a more-thanadequate light meal. Health professional Ann noticed that the price would barely cover the cost of the generous mound of sour cream. The pork was tasty and tender, complemented by loads of lettuce and tomato.

Four tacos go for $6.50 here, and two or three should be plenty for normal appetites. Garnishes are simple, with a choice of tangy green or red sauces available out of squeeze bottles on the counter. Instead of the usual sprinkling of cilantro and onion, these tacos come with a tomato and onion topping, resembling a simplified pico de gallo. A wedge of lime completes the condiments, and each taco comes on two modestly sized tortillas. Ann extolled the supple qualities of her adovoda, red chile-marinated pork.

Granted, the taco meats here are a touch greasy, but if that’s a concern this probably isn’t the place for you. I thoroughly enjoyed my traditional carne asada, which had a potent steak flavor perked up by a judicious squirt of peppery red salsa. The ripe fresh tomato and raw onion added an assertive note that complemented the meat’s richness.

As a general rule, the best authentic-style tacos in Boulder County are found in Longmont. But Choza’s are certainly in the same league, and might very well be the best within easy reach of the Boulder city limits. And you don’t even have to be a cool ’70s private investigator to take advantage of this affordably authentic culinary treat.

nd just like that, it’s legal to wear white pants again.

Memorial Day has come and gone, and now starts my bevy of freshberry and no-bake desserts. Of course, it is also shorts season, so perhaps I will break out some low-fat, low-sugar, help-the-cellulite-disappear recipes too.

This week’s treat is a fresh berry one, and it’s a crowd-pleaser. Fresh Raspberry Muffins might not sound that exciting, but there is something about a fresh berry muffin that seems to make people happy. I have witnessed it firsthand. Morning, noon or night, the peeps are happy to see me if I come bearing muffins. It doesn’t hurt my feelings at all if people light up due to my muffins and not me.

That’s what it’s all about.

The fresh raspberries give that bit of tartness that blends so well with the brown sugar. Just enough to almost make you pucker, but not enough to make you squint. That is how I judge all my sour-worthy treats, on the pucker and the squint.

Sounds like a bad children’s book, I know, but whatever works.

Bake and wrap some up in a basket for someone you love today — just don’t wear white pants when dealing with fresh berries. While the fashion police deem them safe to wear, the Dessert Diva puts a big kibosh on white anything when baking. There’s my big genius tip for the start of the summer season. I know, you would never have thought of that! Many more tips to come, I’m sure.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a muffin pan with cupcake liners. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt.

In large bowl, cream together butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs and vanilla until well-combined. Add in the flour mix alternately with the milk. Fold in the raspberries.

Spoon the batter into the muffin pan, filling the holders about 2/3 full.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan. Serve with soft butter and jam or plain. Enjoy!

High-flying fun

rince of Persia: The Sands of Time is tremendous fun, non-stop action and an adventure film with an appealing story.

The film starts with Dastan (William Foster), a beggar boy living by his wits in the bazaar in Persia, getting caught stealing.

Seconds before he’s to be punished for his thievery, the King of Persia (Ronald Pickup) appears and, seeing a hero within Dastan, stops the punishment and instead has him move into the palace as an adopted son. Zoom forward fifteen years or so and now-adult Dastan ( Jake Gyllenhaal) is joining his royal brothers Prince Tus (Richard Coyle) and Prince Garsiv (Toby Kebbell) on an assault on the holy city of Alamut. With them is long-trusted family advisor Uncle Nizam (Ben Kingsley).

The assault of the city, a combination of swordfights, archery and Parkour, is truly thrilling, and watching Gyllenhaal swing, swoop and leap from building to building is great fun. It’s also true to the original form: Prince of Persia started out as a late ’80s video game for MS-DOS and Apple II computers. The reasons for the attack are suspect and soon Dastan is on the run, with a victim of palace intrigue, Princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton) in tow.

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, Prince of Persia has the same feel and pace as Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, except that Prince is a bit more family friendly. There’s also a sweet — and witty

— romance between Prince Dastan and Princess Tamina, complicated time-travel elements and a hilarious gem of a performance by Alfred Molina as the savvy, entrepreneurial rogue Sheik Amar that help make Prince of Persia one of the best films of 2010.

The film isn’t without its flaws, however. One of the most surprising glitches was that many of the long shots were obviously computer generated and looked more like a video game than a multi-million-dollar special effect. The ending was a bit confusing too.

wo years ago, with the world economy about to be credit-defaultswapped right in the kisser, the first Sex and the City feature made $415 million worldwide. Its pre-sold fan base, already nostalgic for Cosmopolitans, heaved a collective, economically envious sigh: Nice to see you four again. By the way, nice shoes.

Now, Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda are back for Sex and the City 2, and it’s more like: Oh. You four again. It’s truly a peculiar picture, though sure to be a success, because writer-director Michael Patrick King knows his audience. For an hour or so, beginning with the Top Hat-inspired wedding of Carrie’s friends Stanford (Willie Garson) and Anthony (Mario Cantone), it’s closer to the original HBO series’ comic spirit and blithely raunchy nonchalance.

And a sloggy hour-and-a-half later, you may feel like fomenting a revolution.

To begin with a shallow point: Why have these women, photographed drearily and insanely costumed, become full-on drag queens? They’re barely human anymore, though in Sex 2 the Manhattan women are coping with theoretically relatable problems and relationship tangles. In supremely art-directed splendor, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Big (Chris North) argue over whether to go out on the town, or eat in, and whether it’s bad to have a big flat-screen TV in the bedroom. of the poor boy with the heart of gold who becomes a prince. At one point, King Sharaman reminds Dastan, “The boy I saw in that square was capable of being more than good, of being great.”

Doesn’t every boy dream of secretly being a hero? Harry Potter is a similar story, and it’s no surprise that Prince director Mike Newell directed one of the Potter films (The Goblet of Fire.)

The banter between Prince Dastan and Princess Tamina was delightful and there’s a very modern sensibility about their interchange, even as they’re in the middle of a fantasy film set a thousand years ago. Their dialog is suggestive and flirtatious, but in a manner that’ll pass right over the heads of younger audience members.

Princess Tamina is also a strong, capable character, a nice switch from the prototypical helpless females that populate most of these fables and older video games.

Finally, as the King states more than once, it’s “the bond between brothers that is the sword that defends the empire,” and it’s the combination of honor and brotherhood underlying terrific action sequences and a good, entertaining story that makes this the next blockbuster of 2010. I’m looking forward to the Prince of Persia sequel.

On the flimsiest of pretexts she, Carrie, Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) are junketed to Abu Dhabi. So it’s fun, frolic, run-ins with old lovers ( John Corbett shows up at a spice market as Carrie’s blast from the past) and a teensy-tiny brush with crushing Islamic fundamentalist disdain for everything Sex and the City represents as the quintessence of capitalist extremism in quasi-human form.

Many fans of the series will enjoy this wallow, just as they turned out for the first feature, although I wonder if anyone on the planet, including writer-director King, honestly believes Sex 2 makes the most of its running time. The best episodes of the TV series were

marvels of compression; here, for every amusing exchange, we’re stuck with two more that run on three times longer than they should. The most dubious sequence has the ladies hitting the stage at an Abu Dhabi nightclub with a rendition of “I Am Woman,” featuring cutaway shots to oppressed women of various nationalities joining in. It’s a joke, but essentially sincere and you wonder: When Helen Reddy first sang about invincibility and sisterhood and wisdom born of pain, did she have runway divas such as Carrie and Samantha in mind?

If Sex 2 were a half-hour HBO episode, nobody would be thinking about the implications of anything. At the show’s peak the ensemble, especially Parker, could sell any conceit, any hypocrisy, any zinger. King’s big-screen expansions of this fantasy universe have their moments, but the padding is outrageous: montages of the gals swanning around in the desert on camels, that sort of thing. In one narrative development, Carrie’s latest book gets a pan. She is devastated, and it’s implied that the (fictional, male) book critic simply wants to keep strong female voices silenced, like the Taliban. Please. I enjoyed these characters more when they were rich, rather than obscenely rich, when their self-involvement and life crises had one foot on planet Earth — and when they weren’t all gussied up like Mae West in Sextette.

Imagine cramming 128 million people onto an island the size of Montana. You would be pretty close to replicating the density of Japan. Not surprisingly, space is at a premium and ergonomic design is right up there next to godliness. Yet even in Tokyo, the pinnacle of this figurative “can of sardines,” people of all ages still make room for a tiny bit of wilderness. It is only fitting that they have become captivated by nature’s most efficient invention in space, design and function — insects. Sold live in vending machines and department stores, and the subject of the No. 1 videogame, MushiKing, insects inspire an enthusiasm in Japan seen nowhere else in this world. Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo discovers why Japan developed this rich and enriching social relationship with insects. Like a detective story, the film untangles the web of influences behind Japan’s captivation with insects. It opens in modern-day Tokyo, where a single beetle recently sold for $90,000, then slips back to the early 1800s, to the first cricket-selling business and the development of haiku and other forms of insect literature and art. Through history and adventure, Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo travels all the way back in time to stories of the fabled first emperor who named Japan the “Isle of the Dragonflies.” At Starz.

introduces us to the Rizzos, a boisterous party of four living in the tradition-steeped, seaside spit of Bronx real estate of the movie’s title. The Rizzos don’t talk to one another much, and when they do the neighbors undoubtedly hear every word. But deep down, we’re meant to understand, they shout because they care. The movie’s setup would barely pass muster on Three’s Company, and there’s little doubt that the whole thing is going to end in a group hug. But City Island scrapes by and delivers a smile or two because it does contain a fundamental understanding of the rot that sets in when people hide their true selves from the ones they love.

and lunacy need to keep building. The characters’ cluelessness needs to be endearing, but they can’t come off as imbeciles. The outrageous hijinks can’t be pushed too hard or the whole delicate conceit is apt to collapse into desperate chaos. Wonder of wonders, then, that Shawn Levy, the director of such middle-of-the-road fare as Cheaper by the Dozen and The Pink Panther, and Josh Klausner, one of 12 credited screenwriters who worked on Shrek the 3rd, should turn out to be such gifted practitioners of this very tricky genre in Date Night. The O’Flynns, headed by patriarch Patrick O’Flynn (Kenneth Welsh), approach the zombie plague with a shoot-to-kill attitude. The Muldoons, headed by Shamus Muldoon (Richard Fitzpatrick), feel that the zombies should be quarantined and kept “alive” in hopes that a solution will someday be found. Get Him to the Greek

In Get Him to the Greek, opening Friday and likely to amuse and aghast in equal measure, Russell Brand plays the same British rock ‘n’ roll prat — Aldous Snow — that he assayed so expertly in the 2008 rom-com, Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Only this time, Aldous is off the wagon and on any number of mind-warping chemicals. He’s an obnoxious, narcissistic, groping, blotto nightmare of a ninny — and he’s the “him” in the title of Nicholas Stoller’s improbable, intercontinental buddy movie farce.

Aldous has to make it from his home base in London to Los Angeles for a big anniversary gig at the storied Greek Theater. Good luck to Jonah Hill, playing the dweebish record company underling with the job of accompanying Aldous — and babysitting Aldous and smuggling drugs for Aldous — on his jaunt. Rated R. “A passable knock-off.” That’s how the obscenely rich but heartsick industrialist played by Robert Downey Jr. characterizes the electro-weaponry wielded by his adversary (Mickey Rourke) in Iron Man 2. Much of this scattershot sequel to the 2008 smash feels like a passable knock-off, as well. Here and there, director Jon Favreau’s diversion takes us back to the considerable satisfactions of the first Iron Man, but Iron Man 2 has a harder time with matters of story clarity and momentum. Shrek Forever After

Dreamworks seems bored with the ogre who laid the golden egg. Shrek Forever After, the fourth film in the lucrative franchise, barely tampers with the Shrek formula (one-liners, flatulence jokes, pop tunes) and not enough to breathe life into the exhausted series. Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers), feeling buried under the celebrity and the diapers, makes an unwise trade with a wizard named Rumpelstiltskin (Walt Dohrn) and is sent back to a time before he was actually born. Sleeper

In Sleeper, directed by Woody Allen and featuring Woody Allen, Diane Keaton and John Beck, a Greenwich Village health food storeowner goes to the hospital for an ulcer operation in 1973. The operation is unsuccessful and he is cryogenically stored and awakened 200 years later. He is enlisted by his doctors to overthrow the “Big Brother” leader who rules the world. Much of this science fiction parody was shot in and around Boulder, and features regional modern architecture masterpieces by Charles Deaton, I. M. Pei, Charles A. Haertling and others. The genetic engineering chiller Splice is a double helix of perversity. Canadian director Vincent Natali borrows freely from his countryman David Cronenberg in this tale of suspense, sexual transgression and body horror. Without Cronenberg’s masterful way with visuals or his penetrating intelligence, the film’s deliberately provocative premise is worked out in broad, lurid comic-book strokes, consciously calculated to shock the easily shockable. Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley play bioresearchers who are also life partners nervously dancing around the issue of having children. Clive and Elsa are more adventurous in the lab. In pursuit of prestige and profit sharing they secretly create a transhuman creature whose genetic makeup might yield new medicines. The dithering, morally ambivalent Clive can’t decide if he wants to kill the creature; Elsa is as fiercely protective as a lioness. Their offspring Dren rapidly matures into a bald, lissome adult female mutant: picture Sinead O’Connor with computer generated chicken legs and a tail with a phallic “stinger.” To prevent her discovery by their prying corporate superiors, the pair raise her in a remote farmhouse, a location that unlocks a trove of disturbing memories from Elsa’s childhood. Here, the trio take the concept of family togetherness to unhealthy extremes.
