Cry me a river (Re: “Hidden in plain sight,” cover story, June 10.) Plight? There’s a process, and laws to move to any country.

Come here legally — no problem.

Break the law, suffer the consequences.

How many Indians, Eastern Block Euros, Africans, Australians (must I go on?) come here legally from the other side of the ocean with visas, permits, legally — work, pay taxes, contribute to the health care system, so on and so forth? A lot. Legally.

I am so tired of hearing about the “plight” of illegals. Cry me a river. You broke into my house. You can’t live here. Get out. I’m weary of having my tax dollars support “undocumented” issues. I travel internationally frequently.

Always have to have documentation on me. If anyone actually reads SB 1070 — reads it — there’s no racial profiling.

It’s simply enforcing the law. But you liberal, sympathetic douche bags who are protecting the illegals, concerned with the “plight” of people who are breaking the law, have probably not read the bill. For some reason, you feel illegals don’t need to carry proper identification in this country, or any other for that matter.

Scenario: I was pulled over for a speeding ticket. While waiting to discuss my options with the assistant D.A., a non-English-speaking traffic violator was placed in front of the magistrate

with a taxpayer appointed “interpreter.”

Magistrate: “Why did you not have a license when you were pulled over?”

Non-English Speaker: “I don’t have a social security number.”

Magistrate: “Fifty dollar fine. Please make alternative arrangements for transportation. Next case.”

he problem with being pious in politics is that piety has a way of backfiring — and causing people to snicker at you.

Take Citizens United, for example. It’s a right-wing political outfit that hails itself as a righteous champion of free speech — as long as corporations are the ones speaking. It brought the lawsuit that the Supreme Court used in January to decree that tongueless, voiceless corporate entities have a First Amendment “right” to free speech — just like humans.

Of course, these lifeless constructs can’t speak, but the Supremes fixed that by declaring that money is the corporate form of speech, therefore unlimited sums of corporate funds can be poured into elections, allowing these speechless special interests to drown out the voices of actual voters.

Wow. I got nailed $150 on my legal license, dropped two points, and, to rub salt in the wound, I saw the violator get in her car and drive away. How many times a week does this happen in how many counties in how many states? Oh, by the way, I pay the magistrate’s salary and the interpreter’s, too, with my taxes.

Uniting to fight Citizens United

by Jim Hightower The vast majority of Americans realized that this is both ridiculous and outrageous, and a grassroots group in Wisconsin responded by setting up a Facebook page to mock the decision and rally public opposition to it. They called their campaign, “Citizens United Against Citizens United.” Clever!

But it PO’d the pious outfit, which promptly took legal action to, well, stifle the free speech rights of the Wisconsinites.

I don’t care where the illegals come from — just get here legally and follow the direction of the law or suffer your “plight.” Waaaannnnhhhh! Their “rights”? What rights would that be?

Dysfunctional city policy Bravo for publishing Jon Miller’s editorial, “How to be smarter about SmartRegs” (Perspectives, June, 10).

This program is yet another example of Boulder’s dysfunctional policy-making, at both city and county levels, which invariably puts the financial burden of social objectives on a small minority of residents, without sufficient (or any) analysis of whether the programs actually work. We steal from homeowners, waste tax dollars and rarely have anything except smugness to show for it.

Our whole ClimateSmart program is a depressing example. Last I checked we are paying seven full-time employees to reduce Boulder County’s energy consumption. Their effectiveness?

Approximately zero, according to a mocking Wall Street Journal article a few months ago. Last winter, I called the department to help me with my drafty old house. The only assistance I got was the telephone number of Xcel Energy. We pay them for what, exactly?

Is their job security based on any sort of measurable goals? (The group is interviewing for additional hires, by the way.)

Mr. Miller writes, “The energy savings measures of SmartRegs are untested. It involves conjecture.” That pretty much sums up the Boulder Way. We throw taxpayer money at whimsical schemes that are neither founded in sober research nor subject to objective metrics. We put these programs in place and just keep pouring (other people’s) money into them. I’m not sure whether it’s arrogance or stupidity, but Boulder planners seem to think they can solve complex problems with simplistic solutions, and then they ignore the damage wrought by unintended consequences: Despite the fact that the entire planet uses a standard set of traffic signs and signals, we invent our own type of crosswalk and then seem surprised by all the accidents.

In order to protect affordable housing, we drastically limit new building, which wiped out an entire industry (construction and related services) that employed the kind of people who need affordable housing.

We pour massive subsidies into solar panels, but the steep environmental cost of the panels’ manufacture is not factored into HERS ratings. (Same thing goes for the battery in that Prius, by the way.)

We pass draconian energy-efficiency requirements that add huge costs to remodels so homeowners just leave their old, leaky houses the way they are.

We let Councilman Macon Cowles talk us into building restrictions that, perversely, hurt owners of smaller homes, while benefiting owners of existing, larger homes... including, curiously enough, Mr. Cowles himself. (Mr. Cowles likes to blame Wall Street for hurting Boulder homeowners. Oh, the see LETTERS Page 9

enough mechanics to know that that when you talk trash about the guy who’s working on your car, you’re apt to have it returned to you with the engine in the back seat.

She wouldn’t claim to be responsible for things over which she has no control — like plugging the leak.

She would take responsibility for things she could control, like protecting the shoreline and cleaning up the mess.

She wouldn’t declare a six-month moratorium on drilling in deep water and put 30,000 people out of work — and then try to stick BP with the bill for their lost wages.

But chances are she would order a two- or three-week stand-down on all rigs, during which the crews would check and certify that all their equipment is functioning properly and review their safety procedures. The military does this sort of thing regularly if it experiences serious accidents.

She wouldn’t sit around wondering

why some of the world’s most advanced oil-skimming ships are sitting idle at the dock because they needed a federal waiver from the Jones Act, which says only American-made vessels can operate in U.S. coastal waters, before they can start skimming. She would issue the waiver and kick the butts of those who had failed to do so.

She wouldn’t demand that BP pay for the cleanup after it has already said it is going to. And so on.

In short, Sarah would do the things virtually every elected official with a lick of common sense from Chicken Inspector on up would do.

Granted, in situations like this common sense will get you only so far.

Still, Obama’s performance in handling the oil spill has been one of jaw-dropping ineffectiveness and bumbling incompetence, and after watching the smartest guy in the room make one amateur’s mistake after another, common sense looks like a pretty good alternative.

As a Navy veteran, I am appalled President Obama, our Commander-InChief, did not lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day 2010. Instead, he went on vacation and was rained out at a presentation at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Illinois.

Stating the simple truth that Israel has been built on a heavily recruited immigration from all over the world intended to force Palestinians from their ancestral homes and, in essence, asking the integral question of why are Palestinians paying the price for Christianity’s guilt over centuries of persecution of Jews that reached its horrendous culmination in Hitler’s “final solution” was apparently too hot for our politically correct, milquetoast media minds to handle.

Perhaps Ms. Thomas could be given a certain forbearance for her age, but her statements were strictly to the point.

This public shunning of a person for speaking one’s mind is only cowardly scapegoatism.

The Commander-In-Chief has an obligation to fulfill his responsibilities to our deceased soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen who gave their lives to keep this country free. He has a duty to respect our veterans and support our military forces that are currently fighting two wars.

If a military member did not show up for duty, he or she would be punished, including the possible loss of pay, a reprimand, a demotion, or in a theater of war operations, the potential exists for incarceration. Our Commander-InChief deserves to be punished, and the punishment is to make him a one-term president.

President Obama is not the first president to miss laying the wreath at Arlington National Cemetery. Ronald Reagan was caught up in a prolonged economic summit in 1983. George H. W. Bush was campaigning in 1992, and George W. Bush was vacationing in Texas on Memorial Day 2007. Prior miscues by presidents cannot justify Obama’s dereliction of duty. He should have changed his vacation plans or taken time out to be at Arlington National Cemetery.

Do Boulderites even realize that electric cars around here are powered by burning coal, not by magic unicorns?

Boulderites who truly ascribe to the bleeding-edge of environmentalism should be willing to pay for it out of their own pockets. Instead of voting onerous mandates onto a few people, we should be encouraging compliance through tax incentives, with all of us voting ourselves higher taxes (or reduced spending) to make up for the lost revenues. We are more likely to both participate and demand accountability when our own money is being spent.

The ultimate unintended consequence is yet to come. Boulder County Commissioner Will Toor believes in both limiting growth and keeping housing affordable. This contradiction is only possible, particularly in a desirable area like Boulder, by intentionally reducing property values, which seems to be his strategy. Anybody who has attended a recent public hearing on these issues knows how furious homeowners are about what a handful of activists have done to them. Let’s hope that the coming backlash (Tovarish Toor is term limited in 2012) doesn’t swing Boulder so far the other way that we end up looking like just another Denver suburb.

KGNU, BBC host climate panel KGNU Independent Community Radio and the British Broadcasting Service (BBC) will present a panel discussion on climate change on June 24 at Unity of Boulder. Jon Stewart, host of BBC’s Science in Action, which airs as part of KGNU’s Science Program, will moderate a panel of researchers from the University of Colorado and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) who will talk about how the world has dealt with climate change in the wake of last year’s Copenhagen conference.

The panel will feature prominent climate change experts Peter Backlund, Caspar Ammann and Lawrence Buka from NCAR and Roger Pielke Jr. from the University of Colorado. Journalist Leslie Dodson from KGNU’s program How On Earth will join them to discuss the science behind climate change and the importance of conveying its urgency to governments and the public at large. The panel will also take questions from the audience.

SmartCo to hold job fair SmartCo Foods plans to hire up to 100 full- and part-time employees to staff its new store in Longmont, which is scheduled to open in July. The company is hosting a job fair on Friday, June 18, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center Longmont-Boulder, located at 1900 Ken Pratt Blvd. in Longmont.

Interested candidates should apply in person, and the company will interview the first 500 people at the job fair. Additional interested candidates will be able to submit applications, but will not be interviewed that day.

Longmont Humane Society opens new store Longmont Humane Society has opened a third thrift store in Longmont. Second Chance Thrift Store is located at 1610 Pace St., Ste. 100, in the Fox Creek Marketplace.

Due to the success of the two previous stores, the new location will have extended hours: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Tennis tourney to benefit MHS courts Monarch High School’s tennis team will host a tennis tournament on July 22-25 to raise funds for tennis court repairs. The tournament will have different divisions for junior and adult players, as well as players of various abilities.

County offers farm tours Boulder County Parks and Open Space, along with Colorado State University Extension, will conduct monthly tours to farms in Boulder County through September, from 5:30-8:30 pm. The tours will introduce Boulder County residents to the spectrum of agricultural production systems, issues, challenges and opportunities on Boulder County open space lands. The tours will highlight different farms each month, representing field and forage crops, vegetable crops and livestock. Farmers will be available to answer questions. Hike to benefit Uganda nonprofit On Aug. 28, Educate! will hold its 2nd Annual Hike for Uganda from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. at Green Mountain in Boulder. The event will celebrate the connection between Educate!’s U.S. supporters and its Ugandan students, as participants in Boulder and Kamapla, Uganda, trek to the top of a peak, symbolizing the common goal of empowering a gener-

ation of socially responsible leaders.

Educate!, founded in 2002, works to support African youth and create a future generation of leaders.

The hike will raise awareness and funds for education programs in Africa, and all of the money raised will directly support Educate!’s 830 Ugandan students as they work to improve their communities.

The event offers two distance options of four miles and two miles and is geared toward various fitness levels. Hikers will also enjoy music by Boulder band Lost Angel Station, and bagels, snacks and other refreshments will be available. Vic’s Espresso will provide coffee and hot chocolate for participants.

Kids can enjoy face painting and music, and the shorter hiking option allows families to participate in the event together.

Registration, breakfast, kids’ activities and live music are scheduled from 8:30 to 9 a.m., and the hike begins at 9:30 a.m. Advance tickets are available for $10, and for $15 after Aug. 25.

Kids under 12 are free, and dogs on leashes are also welcome.

Starbucks caves, offers free Wi-Fi As of July 1, Starbucks will be offering free Wi-Fi to patrons, rather than forcing them to have a “loyalty card” and restricting them to a measly two hours worth of Internet access. The change comes at least in part because McDonald’s is now offering free Wi-Fi, and Starbucks sees McDonald’s as a rival.

Whatever. We’re just glad that Starbucks’ CEOs have realized what every independent coffee house has known since Al Gore invented the Internet — online access is a human right.

But don’t let Starbucks’ new ’Net friendly attitude lure you in. Instead, stick with your independent, locally owned coffee houses.

They’ve been there for you all along when you want to check e-mail or surf your brains out. And they’re hip enough not to need frigging McDonald’s to set the trend for them.

Superior bans dispensaries Superior trustees voted 6-0 to ban medical marijuana dispensaries, going against the advice of its own town commission, which recommended permitting and regulating the budding industry.

The town’s mayor told local media that Superior was on the “cutting edge” of the issue.

Cutting edge?

Forgive us, Mayor Muckle, but pot prohibition hasn’t been cutting edge since Ronald Reagan was in office. It’s passé, old, tired and … fruitless.

The cutting edge when it comes to marijuana is full legalization and taxation. Medical marijuana amounts to partial legalization to enable those who need it to take advantage of the plant’s medicinal benefits. It’s an interim step and one that other communities in Colorado have been savvy enough to embrace.

With this decision, Superior, rather than being cutting edge, has become like those towns in Utah where you can’t buy booze. You drive through, but you don’t even stop to pee.

Hey, that’s OK, because there are plenty of other cities and towns in Boulder County where dispensaries can set up shop, and those places will benefit from the tax revenue, not Superior.

Trading four wheels for two

Walk & Bike Month returns with a full slate of events

f you think there’s an increase in bike and foot traffic on Boulder bike paths and streets, you’re probably right. June is Boulder’s 34th Annual Walk & Bike event and with more than 8,000 participants expected for Bike to Work Day alone, these bicyclists and pedestrians aren’t stopping traffic; they are traffic.

This year’s Walk & Bike Month includes more than 90 events and activities for families, seniors, children and women.

Sponsored and hosted by local organizations like Community Cycles, Seniors on Bikes, Boulder Mountain Bike Alliance, Walk Boulder and many others, special events happen throughout the month of June.

Sue Prant, director of Walk & Bike Month, says the number of participants increases each year as more people register for the month’s activities online.

She says they won’t have exact participation figures until after Bike to Work Day on Wednesday, June 23, when she can double check at breakfast stations around town. Between 7 and 9 a.m. on Bike to Work Day, pedestrians and bicyclists can choose among 45 local businesses that will offer refreshments and food for registered participants at their breakfast stations.

“It’s a collaborative community event that we could not put it on without the sponsors. A whole lot of companies contribute to the month activities by donating cash and prizes,” says Prant.

“Since we’ve been outing our message, it’s helped to register more people. We want to know how many people are using the system,” says Prant. “It’s super important to register.”

Boulder’s Walk & Bike Month, which is already among the largest in the nation, may become even bigger this year with the addition of new events to the month’s activity calendar.

Indoor cycling, walking tours and bike repair clinics are a few of the new events scheduled to occur at various locations around town throughout June.

Prant says the addition of new events is reflective of what the community says is important.

“Merchants, walkers and runners became more involved in Walk & Bike Month because it took a big jump from a city to community event,” says Prant. “Specific requests like mountain bike skills and more walking and running activities are reflected in this

Originally a week of six or seven bicycling events in 1977, the Walk & Bike celebration has since grown to a monthlong affair. Prant says the best events are scheduled for the last week of June, beginning on Saturday, June 19, with the Vintage Bike Swap at Boulder High School. Other trophy activities include the YMCA Open House on Sunday, June 20, the Boulder Beer Bicycle Benefit at Boulder Beer on Tuesday, June 22, and of course, Bike to Work Day on Wednesday, June 23.

The advocacy director for the local nonprofit Community Cycles, Prant says the organization is all about getting more people on bikes and repairing bikes for sale. The Rolling Bike Clinic on Sundays of Walk & Bike Month goes to various neighborhoods around Boulder and does bike rodeos.

“We repair bikes and practice safety skills before taking adults and kids on a ride around town. We show them how to get to specific destinations like Safeway or school without driving,” says Prant.

Community Cycles provides the tools to inform people about the benefits of bikes by making it an education process and message that bikes can be fun and affordable, she says.

“People have more pressing concerns to think about than their carbon footprint, but it’s amazing how many people don’t know about the Boulder bike trails,” Prant says.

How drunk are you? iPhone app aims for responsible drinking

E

arlier this month, the Student Emergency Medical Services (SEMS) Foundation launched its “DrinkSafe” application for the Apple iPhone. The nonprofit is based in Boulder, and was in part launched by University of Colorado students and Matthew W. Beres, SEMS Foundation’s executive director, a former research faculty member at CU’s Institute of Behavioral Science’s Natural Hazards Center.

The SEMS Foundation seeks to educate college students about alcohol and drug hazards and to train them to deal with precarious situations in which alcohol is involved. It uses a peer-topeer approach, providing scholarships for outstanding SEMS members (often leaders in student groups or members of the Greek system) who are committed to changing the cultures of excessive drinking on their respective campuses.

According to the SEMS Foundation website, there have been 1,700 drinking-related deaths at colleges across the United States. SEMS also cites statistics from CollegeDrinkingPrevention. gov that pinpoint alcohol as the root cause of 599,000 injuries and 696,000 assaults at colleges.

“We want to provide students with instant access to information pertaining to the specific situation they are in so that they can prevent, identify and intervene when potential alcohol overdose situations arise and act accordingly,” says Erik Fransen, SEMS’ director of marketing and administration.

The growing popularity of iPhone applications made the platform seem 14 June 17, 2010

like a natural fit for the foundation’s mission.

Fransen designed the app along with Joseph Theodore Young, an emergency room physician. In mere months, they had a working prototype for the app. It has several features, including a BAC (blood alcohol content) calculator, a hangover meter and a drinking log to track consumption.

“The app has a wide range of features, but the most beneficial is the ‘Drunk Assessment,’” says Fransen.

He says that a problem among inexperienced drinkers is the tendency to, in his words, “let their peers sleep it off.”

“Having this assessment right in one’s pocket takes away the guessing if someone is in need of help,” he says.

The SEMS Foundation plans to target student groups and inter-fraternity councils nationwide to market its application. According to a press release, the app has even been downloaded in Europe and Australia.

There is concern that such an app will facilitate and possibly encourage underage drinking. Fransen says this is a misconception.

“We do not promote, support, or condone underage drinking,” he says, “but acknowledge that it is a reality that needs to be faced. We feel that if someone is going to make the decision to drink that they should know how to do so more responsibly and be able to recognize the dangerous consequences of over-consumption.”

Carbon up, rent down?

An apartment building in the 1800 block of Pearl Street was evacuated on June 14 after high levels of carbon monoxide, an odorless, toxic gas, were found inside. After receiving a report that carbon monoxide alarms were going off inside the building, Boulder firefighters and police officers evacuated the building and found higher than acceptable levels of the gas with their hand-held carbon monoxide readers.

After closing Pearl Street from 17th to 20th streets, firefighters used master keys to gain access to locked units because there were concerns residents might be injured in some of the apartments. Crews had to knock down a door and found two people who were not even aware of the carbon monoxide exposure. Two animals were also inside the building.

An asphalt company worker using a gas-powered washer to clean the floor of a downstairs garage may have been the source of the carbon monoxide exposure. The employee and other apartment residents were evaluated by paramedics and needed no additional medical attention.

Occupants were allowed to return to their apartments after the building had been ventilated for two hours. The landlord was notified of the incident.

Stick with coffee next time The Starbucks at 3033 Arapahoe Ave. saw some action on June 13 when police were dispatched to the coffee shop due to an intoxicated male harassing customers.

A TASER was used in an attempt to get the suspect under control, but without success. The suspect was verbally abusive and physically aggressive toward police, repeatedly yelling obscenities at officers. An officer sustained a cut lip during the altercation.

The 45-year-old male was arrested and charged with seconddegree assault, resisting arrest, obstruction, harassment and thirddegree trespass.

Little box, a lot of damage A 20-year-old male driver struck a metal pole and sideswiped a transformer box, rolling his vehicle onto its roof at 9th Street and Juniper on June 12. The driver said that his window was foggy and he was looking down to adjust his defrost button when the accident occurred. When officers responded to the incident, he refused medical treatment and was cited for careless driving. Power was out in the area for approximately two hours, and damage to the transformer box was extensive as a result of the collision.

Tubing ban lifted After a weekend of high-water advisories and closures, Sheriff Joe Pelle and Boulder Police Chief Mark Beckner lifted the tubing bans for Boulder Creek and North and South St. Vrain Creeks on June 15.

The water flow is still high in both creeks and can be dangerous, particularly if Boulder County gets more rain.

Creek recreationists are advised to use caution along the creeks and be aware that creek banks can become unstable due to the high water. Proper personal safety equipment should be used during recreational activities on the creeks. Life jackets, swimming skills and suitably loaded floating devices are recommended.

As of June 15, Boulder Creek was flowing at an estimated 495 cubic feet per second (CFS), and normally flows at a rate between 200 and 400 CFS. The St. Vrain Creek was flowing at an estimated 775 CFS through Lyons and normally flows at a rate between 400 and 600 CFS. Pole down, power out A semi-truck struck power lines on Kalmia Street, took down one power pole and severely damaged another on June 11. Police and Xcel responded quickly, and the resulting power outage lasted approximately one hour. here is no justification for killing your own child. Not autism. Not even the worst possible disease you can imagine.

And still, we are left to make sense of cases like that of Superior mom Stephanie Rochester, in hopes of avoiding future tragedies like hers.

Rochester has been accused of smothering her 6-month-old son due to fears that he had autism.

According to media reports, Rochester planned to commit suicide, but feared that the baby would be a burden to her husband. A mental health professional, some speculate she may have had contact with parents whose children were autistic and might have seen firsthand how hard a family’s life can be when a child is autistic.

Local parents who have children with autism acknowledge that having a child with autism can be extremely difficult. They say that Rochester’s story, even if she is found innocent, even if her baby didn’t have autism, is an opportunity. It is an opportunity to highlight the need for more support and resources for such developmental disabilities — not just financial, but emotional, and not just for the patient, but for the families.

And they say there are success stories that should give parents of autistic children a light at the end of the tunnel.

Abigail “No one in the autism community would condone killing a child,” says Jill Tappert, a Boulder mother who helped secure the passage of a new law that will require insurance companies to cover more autism treatments starting July 1. “With that said, it’s hard. It’s overwhelming. There were days when I wasn’t sure I was going to make it to the next day.”

Tappert says her daughter Abigail was diagnosed with autism when she was 2. And that was actually a good thing, since most kids with autism don’t get diagnosed until around age 5, even though parents often suspect it earlier. A diagnosis within the window of about 1 to 3 years old means that various treatments can be significantly more effective in improving the child’s condition.

Tappert says Abigail suffered from self-injurious behavior, meaning that she would hit herself, and sometimes others, often giving herself bruises around her forehead and hips. Because of the possible injuries, her daughter could not safely be left alone. She would have a meltdown when her mother would leave the room, and she would often throw a tantrum when she was interrupted while playing with her animal toys.

of those days, the low points. “I’d dehydrate myself, because I couldn’t go to the restroom … I couldn’t get the mail from the damn mailbox.”

She was getting only three or four hours of sleep, because her daughter constantly woke up in the middle of the night. On top of being sleepdeprived, demands during the day included shopping for her daughter’s special diet, research on the disorder, doctor appointment schedules and advocacy efforts. She also spent a lot of time with her daughter, helping build coping skills for overcoming small challenges and making accommodations when challenges were too steep.

“I used to work an 80-hour-a-week job,” Tappert says. “This is Susan France harder.”

Ask her about the high point, and you can hear her smile over the phone. “I took her to the library yesterday,” Tappert says of her daughter, who is now 7 and likes to go swimming. “She used to refuse to leave the house. … I can walk away from her and her brother playing, and it’s safe. I can go make lunch.

“There is hope, and we’re an example of that,” she continues. “We were in a dark place.”

“It was a big effort by a number of people,” Tappert says. “It was nice to see people come together and give their time, which is stretched thin already.”

“People can get through it, and kids can make progress, but families need more support,” she says, adding that if she just had a bit of assistance from a nonprofit or another charitable organization with things like running basic errands, it would have made a huge difference.

And it’s not just support for parents and their marriage, but siblings as well. Tappert says Abigail will likely outlive her parents, and her 3-year-old brother will likely have to watch out for her when she is an adult.

“He’s going to have an additional job, and that’s hard, and that’s not fair, but that’s where we are,” Tappert says.

“We make a good living. We’re lucky,” she says, adding that if she won a million bucks she would give it to a poor family that is dealing with autism. “It’s a very expensive crapshoot.”

Richardson says the new Colorado law is good news because it covers ABA, a treatment that insurance companies have deemed “experimental and unproven,” an assessment she calls “complete bullshit.”

She suspected something was awry when Adam was 15 months old and wasn’t pointing at things, wasn’t making eye contact.

“There was just something missing,” Richardson says.

Now, he has made so many strides that to the untrained eye, you would never guess that he has autism, she says. It was due to the treatment and her constant efforts to engage him, like making him say “ma” before she would turn the pages of a book.

“The first time he pointed at something, I couldn’t contain it,” Richardson says. “The laundry doesn’t get done, the dishes don’t get washed, but I have a kid who looks at me.”

She acknowledges that she got depressed and lonely, but can’t imagine taking the step that Rochester is accused of taking, especially if the reports that Rochester worked with families struggling with autism are true. If those reports are true, she should have known that you can’t diagnose autism at six months, Richardson says. Even if it was autism, she points out that the child could have had a mild case that was largely treatable.

The disability is now referred to as “autism spectrum disorders,” because it occurs across a broad spectrum, ranging from minor to severe, from simple restlessness to what one parent described as wiping fecal matter on the walls.

“What if I said that if my kid’s going to have cancer, I’m going to snuff him out?” she asks.

“We’ve all gone through the ‘why us,’ ‘why me,’ but they’re your kids.”

Richardson belongs to a local support group for parents of children with autism, and a few of the mothers get together at least once a month “to have a few drinks, laugh at what the kids did, and cry, if you need to.”

Aidan Another member of that support group, Shari Watson, says she started getting mad when she read reports that Rochester was worried that she and her husband wouldn’t have fun anymore if they had a child with autism. Like Richardson, Watson agrees that having children is a gamble, and you never know what you’re going to get.

“You can’t give them back, but you can give them away,” she says.

Watson’s son Aidan, who is 11 years old, was diagnosed with a type of autism spectrum disorder called Asperger syndrome. Aidan is intelligent, bright and inquisitive. But emotionally he’s about half his age, she says.

“At age 11 and five feet tall, he can still fall on the floor and scream in a public place,” Watson says.

Aidan attends a special school in Englewood where there are three other students and three teachers. Watson gets daily written reports on

how he is doing, and she says it is not unusual to see comments like “left class without permission and didn’t tell staff where he was going” or “locked staff out of the kitchen and yelled and screamed.”

“For us a good day is when he didn’t hurt anybody,” she says. “We worry about what’s going to happen when he’s an adult.”

Still, during a photo session at the Boulder Public Library, Aidan is perfectly well-behaved, explaining why he prefers the simplicity of his cassette-tape player to his iPod, asking questions about the photographer’s camera, suggesting places to take photos and striking new poses with his mother.

Watson says that Aidan’s inquisitiveness has rubbed off on her, and that she has learned an immense amount about a variety of topics simply because of his curiosity.

“You can’t take a walk without him turning over every rock he sees,” she explains. “I don’t believe that autism is the worst thing that can happen to you.”

As for insurance, Watson says her previous carrier wouldn’t cover treatments, contrary to its own rules, so she appealed, and the state’s division of insurance has fined the company twice as a result.

“Most people don’t have time to do that,” she says. “Most don’t understand the policies because of how they are written.”

Now, under Blue Cross, Aidan’s autism treatment is covered, but it is a pre-existing condition.

“So we pay twice as much for his insurance, even though he hasn’t gotten any treatment from them,” Watson says.

Environment or genetics?

Theresa Wrangham, a co-founder of the Autism Society of Boulder County, says she was able to fund treatments for her 19-year-old autistic daughter in part because her husband’s job pays well.

The downside is that he works in Alaska as a senior software analyst for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline.

Asked about the baby’s death in Superior, Wrangham says that if Rochester was suffering from postpartum depression, that could have been a contributing factor. But she also acknowledges that there have been cases of parents who have taken their children’s lives and their own after hearing about their child’s diagnosis.

“It’s tragic, because it could mean that this parent had no support and didn’t know where to go for support,” she says. “This is a symptom of a lack of support for this growing population.”

When her daughter Rachel was diagnosed at age 6, Wrangham got the distinct impression that she had “missed the boat” because her daughter had not been diagnosed earlier. Wrangham was told that her daughter would probably never read, have friends, go to college or get a job. Her daughter has done all of those things.

“It’s very crushing as a parent to get that listed off,” she says. “Nobody really knows what our kids are capable of.”

She calls for more federal and state money to make sure things like special education are fully funded and not approved as “unfunded mandates,” as has been the case with the Individuals with

Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

“We’re going to have to put a higher priority on this population, and it’s not just autism, it’s all developmental disabilities,” Wrangham says. “I can’t believe that someone would want a child who has a lower capacity to end up homeless on the street. I refuse to believe that.”

She says autism spectrum disorders are the fastest-growing developmental disability in the nation, now striking about 1 percent of the population, and that can’t be attributed entirely to greater awareness, broadening the term to include a “spectrum” of disorders or improved diagnosis.

She believes that autism is not just caused by genetics, but increasingly by external, environmental factors such as vaccines, pesticides, mercury from coal-fired power plants and phthalates in plastic. Wrangham has given public comment about her concerns in Washington, D.C., to a National Institutes of Health committee.

She points to a 2009 study by University of California at Davis Professor Irva Hertz-Picciotto as evidence that factors such as enhanced awareness, the expanded definition and better diagnostics only account for about 30 percent of the increase in autism seen in recent decades.

“So that means the other 70 percent is not genetic, it’s environmental,” Wrangham says.

Building awareness Linda Baran, a Boulder Community Hospital psychologist at the Mapleton Center who specializes in autism, notes that there has been a 200 percent increase in autism cases over the past 30 years, and she agrees that the increase is due to multiple factors.

“It looks like it’s more than just genetics, environment or diet,” she says. “It’s probably a combination of all of them.”

Baran also agrees that autism can take a severe toll on families, in part because parents begin to feel isolated. They can’t go to the store. They don’t get invited to kids’ birthday parties. They can’t attend a barbecue or a picnic because of their child’s behavior.

“Life almost becomes therapy,” she says.

“Instead of baseball games or piano lessons, for awhile they’re just taking their kids to therapy.”

She adds that, the next time you see a child’s meltdown in a grocery store, think twice before judging.

“Not every child misbehaving in the store is doing it because of parenting problems,” Baran says. “We all do it. You’re in there, trying to shop, and you say, ‘I wish they’d rein their child in.’ And really, they need empathy, not judgment.”

Sue Thomas, who co-founded the local autism society with Wrangham in 2001 and has a 19-year-old son with autism, says she was “sick to my stomach” when she heard about the accusation against Rochester.

“If she cried out for help, nobody heard it,” Thomas says. “Maybe she never saw any of our population that succeeded. It’s not a dead-end road. They’re healthy people. They live long lives.

“It’s not the end of the world,” she continues.

“Yes, it changes your life. I think it’s changed me for the better. I’m more patient, and I appreciate more things than the parent of a typical child.”

Co-existing with wildlife, part II

N

ylon bags of human hair or soap bars hung in trees, scarecrows, motion detectors that turn on lights or create movement, cayenne pepper sprinkled in flower beds, moth balls tossed under plants. Any of these things may work to deter our hungry critter neighbors from munching out our gardens and bits of landscape.

Up to a point.

“Some things may act as a deterrent at first, but animals learn what will actually hurt them and what will not,” says Sharon Bokan, smallacreage coordinator for the Colorado State University Extension office in Boulder County.

In other words, they’ll call your bluff and raise you. So you have to be prepared to know your players and up your game.

According to Bokan, Colorado State University did a study some years ago about wild animal control and came up with a few methods that still are effective today.

Deer can jump fences eight feet high. That doesn’t mean your fences have to be higher than that, which in many places may not be allowed anyway. But you can use “outriggers,” long boards placed at an angle from the top of the fence to the ground that would make it difficult for deer to get close enough to the fence to jump over.

Fence off portions of your vegetable garden

into smaller areas that will give deer less room to jump in and out of.

For critters lower to the ground — such as voles and pocket gophers — create barriers they can’t look underneath, such as solid fencing material, stacked hay bales, opaque plastic sheeting or thick rows of junipers and evergreens.

To protect the tender bark of young trees and shrubs, wrap the trunks with ¼-inch mesh hardware cloth or three-inch plastic cylinders, from three to six inches below ground level to a height of at least 18 inches.

Tubes of netting can also protect tree trunks from deer chewing — but may not be enough to keep the males from using them to rub the velvet off their antlers.

The most effective kind of barrier fencing also incorporates a mild dose of the second factor most effective for keeping out wildlife — pain.

Commercially made electrified wire fencing — the kind used to keep dogs from roaming — provides a very low electric shock. To train deer to stay away, a little peanut butter is smeared on the wire to invite a nose touch and subsequent enlightenment.

Another kind of pain deterrence includes biodegradable repellent sprays with capsaicin — hot pepper, basically. They taste bad to a host of critter palates and make little paws tingle. The sprays

should be applied on a dry day to the buds or new growth of plants and all over new young trees, from the top down. Be careful if you decide to try your own homemade hot sauce concoction — plants can burn, as well.

Something that not only gives offense to critter tastes but their noses is a spray mixture of 20 percent chicken eggs and 80 percent water. You can make this yourself (check out the instructions on the CSU Extension website) or try one of the organic, commercially made versions.

Warning: I bought some dollar-sized repellent strips that promised to keep deer and rabbits at bay. I sent some to a friend of mine in North Carolina who hung them, per the instructions, near her tempting plants.

She found them the next morning chewed to bits, which quickly vanished. Sometimes even a rotten egg smell will be attractive to a hungry critter. But then, deer have been reported to eat bars of Lifebuoy soap that were hung in trees and were meant to discourage them. If you’re going to use a commercial repellent for the first time, try not to spend a lot of money.

Then there’s coyote urine. Yep, there are people who harvest this stuff somehow and sell it to use as a wildlife deterrent.

“I don’t want to know how they get it,” says Bokan. “But our study found it effective.”

hen you look at it, it’s called a ‘bluegrass festival,’ but it’s a wide-open music festival,” says mandolin great Sam Bush. “I’ve seen everything from Little Feat to Paco de Lucia to Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson to Bill Monroe to Ralph Stanley.

Just last year they had David Byrne — he had his normal Talking Heads-style band, the Dancers. Elvis Costello played there with somewhat of an acoustic band of musicians who have played the festival many times. I believe the variety has really kept the festival going.”

While he likes to play down his longtime nickname, the “King of Telluride Bluegrass” (“I ain’t the king of anything. But I sure am glad I get to go”), Bush sits at the heart of the annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival, as he has since 1975, when he first played there with his then-band, New Grass Revival. Bush is celebrating his 36th

consecutive year on the stage, this time playing with The Sam Bush Band.

“He’s always been the guy — the sort of spark plug behind the thing,” guitar legend Tim O’Brien says about Bush and why they banteringly call him the king. “All through the history of the festival, he’s been on the stage the most of anybody with different bands. It didn’t matter who it was, he’d be on the stage with them. They’ll have Emmylou Harris or Willie Nelson or James Taylor or whoever, but a lot of the fans are there because of Sam and because of what he represents, which is that fusion of all those elements — the pop stuff, the rock stuff, the bluegrass and the blues.”

Founded in 1971, Bush’s band New Grass Revival became really the first long-standing progressive bluegrass band that played traditional instruments: the banjo, fiddle, guitar, bass and mandolin. However, with what see BLUEGRASS Page 22

Concrete Blonde tours for the fun of it

Johnette Napolitano on music, touring and her love of flamenco

C

oncrete Blonde are that rare animal, an alt-rock band with staying power.

The group’s first, self-titled album got the band’s career rolling in 1986, but it wasn’t until 1990’s Bloodletting, featuring the singles, “Joey,” “Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)” and “Tomorrow, Wendy” that they broke through to a wider, more mainstream audience. Many years and albums later, the band is as vibrant and relevant as ever.

In honor of the 20th anniversary of the release of Bloodletting, Concrete Blonde is playing a whirlwind, coast-to-coast tour this summer, making a stop in Arvada at the Arvada Center for the Arts on June 21.

BW: What is it about New Orleans that’s such a big draw for you?

JN: New Orleans was the first place that we went on tour. Our first tour ever was opening for Cindy Lauper, and the first city was New Orleans. And being from California, I just thought it was the most exotic, I mean, it was like a storybook, you know? It was like walking around in a book or a movie. And I just thought it was the coolest place in the world, and the vibe was just so unlike the West Coast vibe. It’s just an older part of the country, and I really took to it like crazy. It’s been one of my favorite places since. So in between tours I’d go stay there for a month or whatever, and I just really like being there, and I’ve met some amazing musicians down there.

BW: That would explain why you want to maybe have a club or something there.

JN: I do! And I want to have a flamenco club, and I’m working on an idea to produce a flamenco show at the Preservation Hall in September. You know, it’s a Spanish city, the Spanish rebuilt it, and it just makes all the sense in the world to be part of the musical identity of New Orleans. It seems so natural to me. It just seems right.

And flamenco, it’s musician’s music. There’s really odd, Eastern time signatures and things like that. I’ve never seen a musician in the world that wasn’t really impressed and really blown away and transfixed by flamenco. It just feels like the right thing. I could just see being an 80-year-old woman dressed in full flamenco drag walking around in the morning (pauses) with a drink. (Laughs heartily.)

BW: The real question is “What would the drink be?”

JN: (Laughing) The drink is always wine. It’s always red wine.

They aren’t backing down

Backstreet Boys, older, still getting shrieked at

T

here are two kinds of people in the world: those who love the Backstreet Boys and those who hate them. And whichever group you fall into, you can’t avoid the reality that this group of boy wonders helped define the next generation with their ultra-clean suburban dance mix.

It was a soundtrack for the first generation that actually practiced safe sex, and that, in the confusion of the ’90s, played Barbie well into its late teens.

It was, after all, your little sister’s music. That the band actually grew up is another matter altogether. After Kevin Richardson quit the scene in 2006 — the fool! — the multi-platinum Prefab Four has gone on, recently releasing its latest disc, This Is Us (call it retro), after their almost apologetically defiant disc, Unbreakable, of 2007. More, for those blasphemous and now-lonely Seattle grunge fans who wrote the Backstreet Boys off as a flash in the pop culture pan, the group just wrapped up a sellout multi-milliondollar European tour. Whether this is good news for the culture or bad depends on who you are. But either way, although Nick, Howie, Brian and AJ have moved from major arena tours to mid-size venues, they’re plenty happy with the knowledge that there’s still a pouty crowd of late twentysomething Match.com junkies that needs pleasing in only a way these onceteen idols can provide.

“You’ll find that the Backstreet Boys, after 17 years of being together, that we’re not saving the planet with our music,” says Brian Littrell. “We’re not rocket scientists. It’s just music, and you’ll find that the Backstreet Boys are comfortable with being who we are — we’re not trying to be anything else.”

As late as 2006, the Backstreet Boys were nominated for the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award for Best Musical Group, an honor they actually won only six years earlier. But the biggest problem the band faces is simple: When about half of their fans are almost at the age when they will be scarfing up senior discounts and tearing into the local salad bar, how do you keep it current? The answer is simple, boys and girls: fan cruises.

“The Backstreet Boys are doing their first cruise this coming December on Carnival Cruise Lines,” Littrell says. “The things already sold out, man. I mean, we can talk about it, but I don’t think you can get a ticket.”

According to Littrell, the Boys now range between 32 and 37 (“We’re old, man!” Littrell laughs), but the band is far from thinking about IRAs and AARP sponsorship. Like their pop star forebears of the 1980s who are now resting comfortably as judges on American Idol, the Backstreet Boys obviously have a

future in the industry. As for the new album and tour, the Backstreet Boys are evolving. Long gone are the days of Never Gone, when they tried to play rock and their fans just sat in the audience looking confused. The new mission is simple.

“With Unbreakable and now This Is Us, I think we’ve gone through those growing pains of figuring out who we are in order to share ourselves with the rest of the world. It’s more about going back to what I think is relative for us.

We’re still dancing our butts off, and singing our butts off.”

On thing’s for certain. People are looking back to the 1990s as the “good old days,” and the Backstreet Boys have made it clear that they are gonna be here to fill that vacuum.

And while many probably won’t be admitting it to their colleagues at the office the next morning, around 8,000 concert goers (according to Littrell, mostly “soccer moms”) imbibed with plastic currency are secretly purchasing their gold circle seats and preparing to sneak off to the show. There’s a reason that the Beatles hung up their career after only five years of performing live, and it mostly had to do with trying to escape the same image that the Backstreet Boys are still trying to embrace. But that was 40 years ago. This is now. Things have changed.

“There’s this feel that people have known us for in the past,” Littrell says, “and hopefully we’ll create some new memories for in the future. I don’t think there’s anybody out there that’s left that’s like us.

We’re trying to get our fans over the hump of whatwas with that whole boy band thing. I guess they’re gonna call us a boy band for the rest of our lives.”

What does your sex life say?

ast week I gave a talk on relationship communication at Fascinations in Boulder.

I was worried that the topic would be somewhat lackluster. At Fascinations, I’m usually asked to talk about captivating cunnilingus and fabulous fellatio. “Communication” seemed a little vanilla for a store that prides itself on spicing up sex.

But in truth, communication, verbally or nonverbally, is absolutely essential for any kind of sex — vanilla, chocolate or rocky road with hot fudge and peanut butter chips. Basically, the more you can talk about sex, the better your sex will be.

That said, communication around sexuality can be tricky. Sexuality has its own language — one that is dripping with social, familial and religious messages, connotations and projections. How and how often you have sex conveys a message all its own. Even celibacy has a strong message behind it.

No sexual contact often illustrates that sex is an activity burdened with pain, shame, guilt or fear. For example, last week, National Public Radio covered the Catholic Church’s celibacy debate. Female lovers of Italian priests came out of the closet with an open group letter pleading to Pope Benedict XVI to reverse the celibacy rule.

The women in the letter advocated for their Catholic priest partners to have the freedom to express love.

The NPR story discussed how the majority of priests who have companions share their love in secrecy; however, the irony is that it’s an open secret that priestly celibacy is often violated. The story continues to discuss how communication around celibacy is poorly constructed.

Priests are not given sufficient coping skills or techniques to talk about celibacy and how to manage it.

The church’s underlying message is that sex is dirty and that taking a more sacred and spiritual path means refraining from all sexual activity. It’s like we forget that God (or whatever higher power you may or may not believe in) made us sexual beings.

Remember that women have a clitoris — a beautiful and biological body part that serves no function other than pleasure.

But priests are not the only ones receiving inadequate techniques for how to approach sexuality. The majority of us, especially in the United States, struggle Boulder Weekly

with how to talk about sex, particularly when the values of religion become intermingled in the mess. Many evidencebased research studies have shown that parents who discuss sex and sexual safety with their youth have a greater impact and efficacy rate for the delay of an adolescent’s sexual debut. However, talking about sex and giving your child a pack of condoms can be a scary activity. Our society has socialized us that doing so will only give our youth the message to start having sex ASAP — even though the research shows otherwise.

Whether you subscribe to religion or research, the messages surrounding sex are often loaded. In their letter to Pope Benedict XVI, the Italian women state: “The reasons that, over time, prompted the church hierarchy to introduce [the celibacy] discipline in the canonical legal system itself are commonly known: economic interest and expediency. Then, over the centuries, everything has been marinated in a certain amount of misogyny and hostility toward the body, psychological drives and its primary needs.”

Stefania Salomone, an office manager in Rome, challenges the sacredness of the celibacy rule. As a previous lover of an Italian priest, she started a website for women in relationships with priests. She wanted to advocate and communicate that “sacred” is the right of people to share love and get married. In my opinion, that goes for all people of any gender or sexual orientation.

Whatever form your relationship takes, it’s important to communicate.

Whether you are a parent or a priest, sex need not be a secret. And so, I applaud all the parents who have the courage and take the time to discuss sex with their youth. And I certainly applaud the brave Italian women who came out of the closet to fight for love. These women fearlessly illustrate that communicating love, with words or through sexual intimacy, is healthy — and a human right.

The “ranch” wasn’t much, just a low point on the bank that served as a takeout point, a couple of cabins, some tents pitched in the sage, decrepit school buses that served as shuttle vehicles and a shed that operated as the Soggy Dollar Bar. The bar’s hours were fickle, opening up when a bunch of Rats rowed their rafts up to the takeout and disgorged a cargo of Texans who were all too willing to cough up three bucks for a Bud after a day of being scorched under a hot Colorado sun.

The upper Colorado has its wild bits. Places like Gore Canyon, where only fools venture in high water and where more than one has lost a life. But as rowdy as the rapids of the Gore are, they are small fry compared to the big stuff in Utah.

The Colorado River in Utah is deeper, faster, more beautiful and more dangerous. So one hot summer, years after I had sold the VW bus that served as my home at Rancho del Rio, I packed up and headed out to sample the real stuff and meet the hardcores who were drawn to the burning desert, beyond the last vestiges of civilization.

The Rats are different than the people they guide.

Tougher and more leathery. Burned by the sun and hardened by days behind the oars. They regard us with a kind of disdain. In the real world, their clients might be doctors or lawyers, big shots who run the show and aren’t afraid of anything. But out here in the high desert, with nothing but sage and rocks and coyotes and the slow, sluggish brown strip of a river pulsing through the vacant land, the Rats are the bosses. The Rats load the gear, tell us where to sit in the shuttle vans, so we sit down, shut up and head for the put-out.

We unload at an empty stretch of the Colorado outside of Moab. The water here is silty and thick, flowing through the canyon at a leisurely pace. It’s deceiving.

In the middle of the channel the water moves with a powerful purpose, sweeping everything in front of it with a force as strong as Mother Nature. We push off in our rafts and are quickly sucked down the canyon, the red walls flecked with sunlight, insects dancing across the water and the Rats pulling on the oars.

When rafting was in its infancy, with many rivers yet to be run, the Rats who build their lives around the water gained legendary status. They were people like Ken Warren, a prickly outfitter and hunting guide from Portland, Ore., who led expeditions to the Ganges, making the first descents of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda — the western and eastern forks of the Ganges — and who also attempted the first descent of the Yangtze, only to finish up 800 miles short of the East China sea.

Or there’s Richard Bangs, a fanatical river runner who claimed radical first descents in Africa, including the Awash and Baro rivers in Ethiopia.

The Colorado River was first run by the granddaddy of them all, a one-armed tough-as-nails character named John Wesley Powell, who set off from Green River on Aug. 13, 1896, thus accomplishing what could be considered the defining river trip of all time: the first descent of the Colorado, through both Cataract and the Grand Canyon.

Today the Colorado is more accessible. The modern technology of self-bailing rafts, and the fact that most stretches have been run thousands of times, make it so. Still, it’s no surprise that most of the Rats on this trip are refugees from more civilized climes.

The desert and the rivers suit them, and they all are embroiled in a love affair with the canyons and rusty water. It’s not a bad existence, turning your life to the river’s clock.

From the put-in, it takes three days to reach Cataract Canyon. On this stretch the water is smooth and calm, each twist of the labyrinth brings into view another impossible vista: hidden side canyons, tower-

ing rock castles, endless stone walls, a maze of rocks and cliffs and canyons, all leading deeper and deeper in the wilderness. Underneath the calm of the stately landscape is our knowledge that eventually we will have to face the seriousness of the big water ahead.

Cataract Canyon features 23 rapids, including monsters like Mile Long, The North Sea and The Big Drops, which suck you 80 feet closer to the ocean in less than four miles and which rank as one of the Colorado’s steepest descents. Powell’s words echo in my brain: “The rushing waters break into great waves on the rocks and lash themselves into a mad, white foam . . . we blast down another hundred yards through ferocious breakers — how, we scarcely know.”

Still, after three days of floating mindlessly with the current, we’re ready for the big stuff. We pass the confluence of the Green and Colorado rivers, and camp below the Doll House, a trippy collection of rock spires that looms above our finest campsite yet, a huge sandy beach where we play volleyball as the roar from the rapids ahead echoes up from deep in the canyon.

The next morning dawns early, and as we stumble from our tents the excitement and stress in the air is palpable. Cataract Canyon is big water. Big enough to flip a raft. Bigger than even the egos of our guides and scary enough to pump even an experienced Rat full of adrenaline and fear, jacking him up like a thousand cups of coffee on a hot summer morning.

The current takes us before we know it. We feel the boat leave the shore, and suddenly we’re in the middle of huge dark waves with a power beyond understanding. We make it through the first section as well as the second. But on the third, disaster strikes. One of the rookie boatmen hits a huge wave at an awkward angle. He’s a young kid, powerful from a rural life on a Utah farm, but his strength is no match for the wave. We watch in horror as his boat is sucked backward into the frothing mouth of a hole, upside down with the passengers tumbling out, toothpicks in the maelstrom. When we finally catch up to them in calmer water, their exhausted bodies lie limp on the rocky shore.

The rest of the canyon passes without incident. We run it clean and beach the boats upstream from Lake Powell, an insult to the river runner whose name it bears. Powell liked his rivers wild and free, untamed by dams. We’ve lived through the journey, and as we organize our gear and prepare for the last stretch of the trip, a tow by motorboat across the lake to the take-out, we’re already dreaming about the next stretch of rapids, the next trip and the next canyon.

Ban on ‘Dumpster diving’ could leave some hungry

t’s ironic that, in a town and Susan France university that pride themselves on recycling and zero waste, people throw away so much food. Whether it’s the city’s upscale restaurants or the resident halls at the University of Colorado, edible food is wasted each day when it is tossed into the trash.

A new CU policy that prohibits people from searching trash bins for food criminalizes the controversial but widespread activity known colloquially as “Dumpster diving.” People who are caught diving could face a maximum fine up to $1,000 and a maximum of one year in jail — a serious price to pay for grabbing a discarded bagel.

But those who are accustomed to getting a bite to eat from the garbage bin say their way of getting dinner not only makes life more affordable for them but also redirects waste from the landfill.

Many people in the Boulder community have become accustomed to searching through the garbage for a meal and depend on the food that people throw away in order to fill their stomachs. Josh, a local Dumpster diver who doesn’t want his name in the paper for fear he might be targeted by police, feels that looking through the trash for food is prevalent in Boulder because the community is so environmentally conscious and has thousands of poor college-age kids.

He says the ban was passed for shallow reasons.

“I’m willing to bet the ban was two-fold. Primarily, it was enacted to stop the grotesque sight of a person in a Dumpster — how unsightly!” he says. “Subsequently,

and purportedly tantamount, it was enacted for the good health of the poor. Unfortunately, the poor are not stupid and know what is good and bad.”

The accumulation of food waste has increased the popularity of Dumpster diving, especially in Boulder, where the spirit of the community is reduce, reuse and recycle.

“It’s funny how Dumpster diving is presented as the problem, when really it is just a result of a problem,” says Austen Grafa, creator of CU Serves, a volunteer program at CU that allows Kittredge Dining Hall to donate food to local homeless shelters. “I think Dumpster diving is great in the same way that garage

sales are great. It is just that people don’t have to feel as privileged when they see others at garage sales. It’s more socially accepted. We don’t like the idea of Dumpster diving because of the social costs, but for someone who depends on Dumpster diving it makes complete sense.”

If all of this food is being thrown away, why is so little being done to get it into the hands of those who need it?

“Why spend money when you don’t have to?” Grafa asks. “I think that anyone who is going to put a lock on their trash should spend a day begging for spare change. I did it as a social experiment, and it was awful.”

Climbing into a garbage bin or digging through bags of trash in search for food to feed your self or your family might not be socially acceptable, but many people take advantage of establishment frivolity and misuse of food.

“I have a limited budget and don’t want to rely on more taxpayer dollars for food stamps. Granted, I’d much prefer to work with businesses so I wouldn’t have to jump into a disgusting pile of filth, but they can’t encourage giving away free food,” says Josh.

Grafa’s goal with the CU Serves project is to bring awareness about the food waste on campus.

“I was working at the Kittredge Dining Hall and noticed how much food was being composted at night,” he says. “The food that was being thrown out was created by the dining halls ‘buffet-style’ service. They see DUMPSTER Page 48

nfortunately, pretty much everything I know about World Cup soccer comes from the mid-’90s pinball machine of the same name. I know that teams from around the world are involved and someone enthusiastically yells out “goal” in an elongated manner whenever points are scored. Also, the mid-’90s mascot of the event looked a lot like Underdog on Jenny Craig.

mands an unparalleled amount of fanaticism amongst people who appear fairly normal in the years between competitions. Case in point is an otherwise reasonable-appearing British friend who vows to get up at the crack of dawn to catch as many matches as he can at Boulder’s Conor O’Neills before the last event on July 11.

Anticipating this soccer fest, I decided to pay a lunchtime visit with friend Kathleen to this Celtic-fashioned pub. The interior here is endearingly lived-in, with a well-worn retro feel.

Kathleen noted that the slightly sticky qualities of the tables lent an additional layer of authenticity. For my part, I half expected James Mason’s IRA gunman on the lam from the film Odd Man Out to dart out of a back room.

Clay’s Obscurity Corner Odd Man Out

A

rguably, director Carol Reed’s 1947 classic film noir Odd Man Out can be cited as an influence on everything from Martin Scorsese’s After Hours to 24. While the Belfast locale and IRA affiliation of James Mason’s protagonist are never explicitly mentioned, it’s clear that Mason’s Johnny McQueen must evade the authorities after a botched robbery. As he goes on the run, he meets several eccentric characters in the Irish night, photographed in a style reminiscent of German Expressionism. Visually, and to a lesser extent, thematically, this film foreshadows my all-time favorite film, Reed’s 1949 The Third Man, starring Orson Welles. available during the early morning matches) as well as more contemporary sandwiches and small plates. Entrees top out at $11.99 and include fish and chips, corned beef and cabbage, and pot pies. Sandwiches include standard-issue clubs and Reubens, while the small plates offer sophisticated tastes of seared

tuna and roasted piquillo peppers.

Kathleen and I started with two of the starters, the first being the $3 beerbattered onion rings. In this instance, the beer flavor was pleasantly pronounced and the portion was ample for the price. A bit more crispness would have benefited the batter, and Kathleen

felt this snack would have been enhanced by the use of Vidalia sweet onion. A delicate dill dip was a welcome change from clichéd Ranch dressing, and it distinguished these finger foods from their fast-food brethren.

Next up was another $3 appetizer, the geographically incongruous Thai shrimp skewer. Despite this dish’s distance from the Emerald Isle, these red curry-marinated shellfish were finely executed, carrying a subtle aroma of lemongrass as well as remarkably fresh flavor and texture. A dollop of jasmine rice added heft to the plate, and further contributed to the preparation’s visual appeal.

My friend had been raised on Shepherd’s Pie, and it’s not surprising she ordered the $10.99 version available here. While she wished for more lamb and something other than canned peas in this dish, she did laud its appearance, enhanced by a hefty serving of attractively piped and substantial mashed potatoes. She appreciated this starch’s flavor, although she was less enamored of the tomato-based sauce that deviated from the gravy of her youth.

The main virtue of my entree of my $9.99 bangers and mash was its formidable heft. There wasn’t anything unexpected about the brown gravy that covered the generous portion of mildly seasoned Irish sausages. Once again, the mashers brought an element of pleasing richness that will leave most diners full before completely clearing their plate.

Neither of our entrees were fancy, although reasonable pricing and heartiness made them thoroughly suitable accompaniments to a formidable athletic contest, the World Cup. Respond: letters@boulderweekly.com

CU’s dining services is an example of a place that is working toward zerowaste, but there still are leftovers.

“In the spring semester when we did our Scrape Your Plate event, we measured wastage of .23lb per person served.

This is substantially down from spring 2008 when the measured wastage was .41 lb per person served,” says Lauren Heising, RD coordinator for Sustainable Dining at CU Housing & Dining Services.

Food surplus and unwanted waste varies, according to Heising, depending on the time of year and the venue. There is more at the beginning of the school year because new and old customers are trying out all the new items on the menu.

little to no money. If you know of a good Dumpster that isn’t too dirty and the food venue throws away packaged goods, it’s a nice, clean, free meal, Josh says.

“It’s considered illegal, but the only potential harm done is to yourself,” Josh says. “You take all the inherent risk.

Coupled with the good intentions of reducing our society’s waste, you feel like you’re the unspoken hero — the Robin Hood of food without even robbing.

You’re prosecuted by the police for using a waste product that a company didn’t even want.”

The Dumpster menu varies from place to place. Josh reveals that the food quality depends on where you are looking and what you are dealing with.

“Some places actually put food in plastic on top of the existing garbage in a Dumpster,” he says. “It almost says, ‘We know there isn’t anything wrong with it, but our boss says we have to get see DUMPSTER Page 49

I

t’s one of my favorite times of the year. Thank goodness it only rolls around once.

Not that I wouldn’t love to “have” to be in Aspen every other month or so, but I have yet to perfect the sip, swirl and spit. I’m all swallow every single time.

Of course, I am referring to the 2010 Food and Wine Classic in beautiful Aspen. It’s always a busy but wonderful time, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Not too shabby for a day’s (or two days’) work.

My dessert this week is a Food and Wine Classic-inspired dessert. I am making Chocolate Blueberry Shortcakes and pairing it with a nice Spanish Grenache. A little might just end up in the whipped cream and the rest to sip alongside the dessert.

Grenache will work nicely with the blueberries, as Grenache tends to be a bit spicy with a nice berry flavor. I am using Garnacha de Fuego that I picked up at PettyJohns. They are always so helpful and full of knowledge. I am probably going to have swing back by there and pick up a few more bottles, as practicing all my recipes always leads to finished bottles. It helps me get creative, what can I say?

I think you will be very happy with this Blueberry Chocolate concoction. You can present it very downhome shortcake style, or you can present it with a bit of elegance — it’s all in the presentation. Just make sure you have a bottle of Grenache on hand, and you can serve it any way you want.

Now follow the directions, put some love into it and invite me over when it’s done.

Chocolate Blueberry Shortcakes 1 cup flour 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup cocoa powder 1/4 tsp. salt 1-1/2 tsp. baking powder 6 tbsp. melted unsalted butter 1/3 cup milk Whipped Cream 1 cup heavy whipping cream 1 tsp. almond extract 1/4 cup powdered sugar 1-1/2 cups blueberries powdered sugar for garnish Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In large bowl, sift together flour, brown sugar, cocoa powder, salt and baking powder. Add in melted butter and fold in milk until dough forms.

Drop by tablespoons (makes eight) onto ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes until biscuits set (will resemble cookie). Take out and let cool.

When ready to serve, make whipped cream. In large, chilled metal bowl, beat whipping cream, almond extract and powdered sugar until stiff peaks form. Place shortcakes on serving plates, top with whipped cream and blueberries, and dust with powdered sugar. Serve with a nice glass of Grenache. Enjoy!

Note: You can make four large shortcakes (just divide dough in four parts instead of eight), or put the whipped cream in between two chocolate biscuits, making a sandwichtype shortcake.

“We are telling everyone that people are starving in our country and we need to do something about it,” he says.

“We’re addressing the problem head-on and getting criticized in the process.”

Don’t pity the A-Team

ased on the 1980s TV series of the same name, The A-Team starts with the formation of the team by former Army Rangers.

Eighty successful missions later, they’re tricked into recovering stolen U.S. Mint plates that threaten to enable terrorists destroy the nation’s economy with counterfeit Benjamins.

The team fails at its mission, is framed and each A-Team member is subsequently thrown in prison. No worries. They break out through increasingly unlikely sequences of events and then have the dual task of recovering the stolen plates and clearing their names.

Or, at least, the plot seems to be something like that, but this is the kind of film where it’s really not much about the story line, and somehow, that’s okay.

The movie is still entertaining and the cast (Liam Neeson as Hannibal, the group leader, Bradley Cooper as Face, the handsome woman-crazy group member, Quinton Jackson as tough guy B.A. Baracus, a role made famous by Mr. T. in the original series, and District 9 standout Sharlto Copley as the crazy Murdock) works well and has an appealing chemistry.

Sharlto Copley offers an entertaining performance as the crazy helicopter pilot Murdock, but his accent

was all over the place as the film progressed. In some scenes he sounded like an American, in other scenes his native South African twang snuck through, and in one scene he even speaks Swahili. Sloppy directing and continuity. Liam Neeson does the best job, however, instilling Hannibal with a wry self-conscious humor that was reminiscent of Peppard in the original role.

Jessica Biel plays Charisa Sosa, the cliché role of tough hottie in the military who has a soft spot for one of the protagonists (Face, in this case). In a film where it’s all about the action scenes, not the acting, she’s still surprisingly boring on screen.

The bad guys in the film are the Black Forest squad, led by Colonel Pike (Brian Bloom). Hannibal reports directly to goodold boy General Morrison (Gerald McRaney), and there’s also a CIA stooge called Mr. Lynch (Patrick Wilson) rounding out the main cast. There is some ambiguity with their roles, but I’m confident you’ll have the story figured out before the denouement and closing credits.

The A-Team had good special effects and CG work which allows it to pull off many of the more complex stunts, but there were a few scenes that were just laughably over-thetop, notably one where they plummet towards the earth in a tank while steering it by shooting shells in different directions. Then again, saying that a scene was over-the-top in a film like this is probably a bit daft.

How seriously can you take an action film where the signature quotes are “I love it when a plan comes together” and “overkill is underrated”? Is The A-Team entertaining? Yes. Is it a flawed movie with an incomprehensible storyline and massive suspension of disbelief required? Definitely.

ou can take the man out of the Mission, but you can’t take the Mission out of the man,” one of lead-character Che’s (Benjamin Bratt) homeboys in La Mission says during a low-rider jaunt through the North Beach district of San Francisco after Che expresses concern about his teenage son, Jesse ( Jeremy Ray Valdez), who is soon leaving for UCLA. A recovering alcoholic and ex-con, Che wants the best for his son but worries that the young Mission High senior will disown his father and his father’s friends’ lifestyle and traditions once he moves to Los Angeles.

La Mission takes a sharp and emotional turn when tough-guy Che discovers that his son’s excuses for repeatedly not showing up to hang out with his father’s buddies (the “Mission Boyz”) are lies. In truth, Jesse is sleeping with an upper-class white guy and even dancing shirtless at a gay club in the Castro district, which is just a few blocks from the Mission but might as well be on Mars.

A confused Che beats and disowns his son, later accepting Jesse’s homosexuality as an abberation on the condition that he never mentions it again. Even after Jesse is shot and critically wounded by a homoBoulder Weekly

phobic young Mission thug, Che still violently asks his son to make a choice between an openly gay life and a life without a father.

Prior to a few days ago, the 2000 film-version of Michael Chabon’s Wonder Boys was the only major motion picture I’d watched that was not only filmed in a city, but a neighborhood where I’ve lived. Seeing Michael Douglas booze it up in on-screen in Pittsburgh, where I grew up, to the sounds of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen was cool, but checking out the jarring social and cultural flash of La Mission — shot in San Francisco’s culturally rich Mission

District, where I lived from 2002 to 2008 — was far more rewarding.

La Mission wasn’t based on an acclaimed novel, but the film’s heartfelt drama and realistic depiction of a gritty, harsh-reality-filled neighborhood are seriously penetrating on a level that the majority of recent urban-set movies don’t reach. Directed by Peter Bratt and starring his brother Benjamin, La Mission — alternately funny, sad, thought-provoking and romantic — poignantly touches on sociological and economical subjects while utilizing San Francisco as a colorful backdrop.

For Mission District veterans, La Mission is at least partially a big-screen replay of phenomena we’ve seen first-hand — gentrification, hate crimes and battles over rising rents, just to name a few. But the Bratt brothers’ competent expression of such serious, and far too common, stories is remarkable. It’s just hard to get over how much the film makes a Mission vet miss the vibrant neighborhood’s beautiful parks and peerless taquerías. Sorry, Juanita’s and Rincón del Sol — it’s not you, it’s me.

Raymond De Felitta’s screwball farce City Island introduces us to the Rizzos, a boisterous party of four living in the tradition-steeped, seaside spit of Bronx real estate of the movie’s title. The Rizzos don’t talk to one another much, and when they do the neighbors undoubtedly hear every word. But deep down, we’re meant to understand, they shout because they care. The movie’s setup would barely pass muster on Three’s Company, and there’s little doubt that the whole thing is going to end in a group hug. But City Island scrapes by and delivers a smile or two because it does contain a fundamental understanding of the rot that sets in when people hide their true selves from the ones they love.

“A passable knock-off.” That’s how the obscenely rich but heartsick industrialist played by Robert Downey Jr. characterizes the electro-weaponry wielded by his adversary (Mickey Rourke) in Iron Man 2. Much of this scattershot sequel to the 2008 smash feels like a passable knock-off, as well. Here and there, director Jon Favreau’s diversion takes us back to the considerable satisfactions of the first Iron Man, but Iron Man 2 has a harder time with matters of story clarity and momentum. How many more of these patronizing cliches can Heigl take on before audiences start blaming her for everything wrong with junk like The Ugly Truth and Killers? Haven’t we seen the oh-my-gosh-my-spouse-is-secretly-anassassin-but-you-know-a-nice-one routine once too often? Rated PG-13. Amanda Seyfried stars in this enjoyable rom-com as Sophie, a bright-eyed girl on vacation with her single-minded fiance in Verona, Italy. Here, centuries ago, Romeo met Juliet. Today lovelorn letters to the tragic heroine are left at a sacred spot. When Sophie replies to a letter written 50 years earlier, its author Claire, a remarkable Vanessa Redgrave, returns to Verona where the two join forces to scour the countryside for Claire’s long-lost Italian beau. Marmaduke is a fun family film because the tale wags the dog. Director Tom Dey takes a serious approach to comedy in bringing the comic strip to the big screen by looking at how the massive Great Dane wants to fit in so much, he’ll do anything.

Marmaduke (voiced by Owen Wilson) must adjust after his owners move from Kansas to California.

He goes from top dog to mutt outcast when he runs into the cliques at the local dog park. His biggest rival is Bosco (Kiefer Sutherland), the alpha dog of the pure breeds. His attempts to be part of the pack result in a series of adventures and misadventures that leave Marmaduke in the dog house.

The charm of the comic strip is maintained through a story that never talks down to the audience.

Watching Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time must be what it’s like to ride a camel across the desert: slow, plodding and predictable. It gets the job done but the trip could be more exciting. This video game-inspired film tells the story of a street urchin, Dastan, who is invited to be part of the royal family that rules the Persian Empire. Soon after he becomes a hero during an invasion of a sacred city, Dastan is framed for the murder of the king. He starts out on a quest to clear his name but ends up trying to protect a magical dagger that can turn back time. Prince of Persia has all the elements of a grand action film, but they’re delivered with such a lackluster touch by director Mike Newell, the film falls short of grandeur. It barely reaches the level of mediocrity. There are a few good action moments, but the scenes are repeated so many times it’s like playing the same level of a video game over and over. Rated PG-13. The reviews are still flooding in for Sex and the City 2 and guess what? They’re as bad as ever. The film’s Rotten Tomatoes fresh rating is now residing at 12, which is higher than 0, where it was a day ago, but still lower than any other major release this year, and that’s including Tooth Fairy, Valentine’s Day and, yes, even MacGruber. I wouldn’t say that things are about to get darker for you, but they’re definitely going to get deeper and damper and more complicated. And yet that’s the best possible place for you to gain new insight about the big questions that so desperately need more clarity. When I was growing up in Michigan, playing in the snow was a great joy. As much as I loved the arrival of each new spring, I endured a mourning period as the ground’s last patch of dirty sleet melted. Once in late March, though, I talked my mom into letting me store five snowballs in the freezer.

It wasn’t until my birthday in late June that I retrieved the precious artifacts. I was slightly disappointed to find they had become more like iceballs than snowballs. On the other hand, their symbolism was deeply gratifying. I’d managed to invoke the tangible presence of winter fun in the summertime. I urge you to attempt a comparable alchemy, Aquarius. Figure out how to take a happiness you have felt in another context and transpose it into where you are right now.
