You should be proud (Re: “Victory! Boulder Weekly investigation ends the practice of shackling inmates in labor,” cover story, June 3.)

Thank you for your efforts to outlaw the shackling of female prisoners during labor and delivery. It sounds as though, with only one vote against the measure, this was something that conservatives and liberals alike agreed upon. With the current ideological hostility and poor quality of discourse in this country, it is encouraging to see us all come together to fight for what’s right. Give me more of this and less bickering and complaining any day!

What you have accomplished should be celebrated. My wife is an obstetrician, and was very pleased to hear that shackling delivering patients has been outlawed. Her job is difficult and dangerous enough as it is, and literally putting a lock between her and the ability to perform certain emergency maneuvers is dangerous for the mother and her child.

Thanks to your efforts, this will not be a problem in Colorado anymore.

With all that we provide prisoners, it is wonderful to finally be able to provide them both safety and dignity during childbirth. If rehabilitation is one of the aims of confinement, it seems a poor practice to remind a woman of her troubled status in one of the most incredibly human of all moments.

(Re: “Climbing Colorado’s couloirs,” Elevation, June 3.) Good lord. Would you morons stop with your “Elevation” series before you get someone killed? As if “Doing the Dog” (Elevation, May 6) wasn’t bad enough, you go and publish the aforementioned article. First off, if someone doesn’t even know what a couloir is, then they sure as hell don’t have any business attempting to climb

hate to ask a rude question in the midst of a national disaster, but here goes: How much money is BP spending on the almost-daily full-page newspaper ads it’s running all across the country to tell us how committed the corporate giant is to serving the public interest?

Oh, and a follow-up question, please: Instead of wasting tons of newsprint on buffing the corporate image, wouldn’t it be better if BP shipped that paper directly to the Gulf Coast to help absorb the oil that’s oozing onshore from its well?

But the corporate response to disaster is always to try papering it over with PR, which is why BP has quietly hired Anne Womack-Kolton. Who? In the future, you might want to verify the current status of a referenced site before you mention them in an article. The Colorado Avalanch Information Center (CAIC) stopped reporting for the season three days before your article ran. Furthermore, as great as the CAIC’s services are if you haven’t taken an avy course or completed the equivalent self study, then the information provided on their website is minimally useful, at best, and potentially dangerous, at worst. Misunderstanding the information presented or not appreciating the scale of the info can easily lull someone into a false sense of security. Also, the CAIC switches to a truncated statewide forecast/report during the prime couloir climbing season, and even the more detailed reports the CAIC provides in the winter cannot compensate for micro terrain management skills.

Were you even aware of the cornicetriggered avalanche accident near Aspen that occurred only days before your article came out? Or how about the two avalanche-related deaths in Alaska that occurred on Memorial Day? Suggesting Skywalker as a good intermediate choice is ridiculous. I would love to see a guidebook that lists 60-degree snow as intermediate.

And it also means that they are not buying their marijuana from drug dealers who also sell other, much more dangerous drugs, like meth, heroin and cocaine. Drug dealers often offer their marijuana customers free samples of the much more dangerous drugs.

Most marijuana consumers would prefer to buy locally grown marijuana of known quality, known purity and known potency. But if they can’t, they buy black market marijuana.

Ashamed of you

I had to assume that the thought behind publishing “The mind of a murderer” cover and inside story (May 27) was to illuminate the psychosis of someone in distress and offer support. I did not find that to be the driving force in the article. It seemed more like a “clever” opposing angle, and a way for Boulder Weekly to sensationalize this crime.

I could think of 400 other ways to get your point across. I just think it was in bad taste, and I am kind of ashamed of your publication.

It is one thing to be contrary, but quite another to be dark.

I do hope in the future you will reconsider this kind of angle in your publication.

Correcting Danish, again (Re: “What hath BP found?” Danish Plan, June 3.) Once more I need to correct Paul Danish on a simple matter of physics.

Paul is under the impression that the Macondo gusher may point to a very large oil field. But the speed and volume of flow at the broken wellhead has nothing to do with the size of the reservoir.

It’s a function of pressure, which is a function of depth.

A local oil geologist tells me that at the 18,000-foot depth of the Macondo bore, oil pressure is roughly 8,000 pounds per square inch. It may be a large reservoir (BP thinks it is, or it wouldn’t have spent the money to drill there) or it may be small — but that doesn’t make it a gusher. Depth does.

pay for the cost of their energy upgrades.

If the city takes all of the income of the landlord, then this could rise to a regulatory takings. It would be unfair and unjust. This would be a new tax on the property owners. They deserve equal protection under the laws.

Many property owners are small or family-owned businesses. This is a time of tea parties and fears about socialism — this is the wrong time to attack small businesses. Boulder is a city where the majority of citizens are forward-looking and do care about energy and the environment. Why alienate allies? Why alienate the tax base of property owners with coercive and questionable programs? Why harm small and family-owned businesses?

The energy savings measures of SmartRegs are untested. It involves conjecture. It would make sense to do a pilot study, say for example, 10 percent of all the rental properties in Boulder, of all types, single family, multi-family, apartment buildings of different sizes, and statistically calculate how much

energy can be saved and at what cost.

The city could sponsor incentives.

An independent panel of statisticians and diverse scientists could be assembled to evaluate the costs and benefits of the changes. Facilitators and social scientists could integrate the findings and co-opt rather than coerce citizens. That would be an exciting program. Many would volunteer to help. I would.

Meanwhile City Council needs to direct their staff to find funding and no-interest loans for the property owners. Public-private partnerships are cutting edge. Work with XCEL, the PUC and the state. Provide rebates that flow to property owners (not tenants). Let the owners provide reasonably affordable, energy-efficient housing to energy-educated tenants, rather than forcing them to face hardship or go out of business. This would be a model for the country.

Israel and the flotilla

The deadly confrontation between the Israeli military and activists off of Gaza’s coast should not be turned into another stale debate between “pro-” and “anti-” Israel activists. Rather, we should use this moment to ask what can be done to improve the situation.

At the root of this disaster is the effort to restrict the flow of people and goods to Gaza. This effort was initiated

by Israel (and supported by the Bush administration) after Hamas came to power. This policy failed to improve Israeli security. Nor did it weaken Hamas. It is time for the Obama administration to show leadership on this issue.

It should work with the international community — including Egypt, Israel and the Palestinian Authority — to create a new security regime for Gaza.

Mechanisms that guarantee Israel’s security needs — like crossing points monitored to prevent arms smuggling by international forces — are possible.

What is needed is the political courage to admit failure and to try a new path.

Meat, dairy bad As global population surges toward 9.1 billion people by 2050, Western diets rich in meat and dairy products will become unsustainable, according to a United Nations Environment Program’s report released recently.

The report was prepared by the International Panel of Sustainable Resource Management, drawing on dozens of smaller studies. It notes that agricultural production accounts for 70 percent of global freshwater use, 38 percent of land use and 19 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.

The panel concludes that, just as fossil fuels will be gradually replaced by renewable, pollution-free energy sources like wind and solar power, meat and dairy products in the world’s diet will need to be replaced by vegetables, fruits and grains. Both shifts are absolutely necessary to reduce production of greenhouse gases and consumption of natural resources and to ensure planetary survival into the foreseeable future.

As Americans, we have a special obligation to lead the rest of the world in a healthful diet of vegetables, fruits and grains — a diet designed to pre-

vent global starvation, while protecting our natural environment and safeguarding personal health.

Once again Israel is being condemned for defending itself against Islamists who wish Israel harm. The people on board the ships from Turkey to Israel were prepared for martyrdom when they left Turkey. There are reports that they were singing martyrdom songs. Israel does and should have the right to make sure there were no weapons headed for Hamas. The people on board these ships were well-armed and were prepared to attack a boarding party.

When, if ever, will nations of the world, especially of the West, accept Israel’s right to self defense as a nation and as a people. The convoy of “aid ships” were sent by “the Muslim brotherhood” in disguise. Israel allows one hundred semi trucks/trailers every day into Gaza loaded with food, clothing, building materials etc. Israel supplies the people of Gaza electricity and fuel. Gaza’s market places are filled with fresh foods and fruits and other foodstuffs. The people of Gaza are not going hungry as some would have the world believe. The convoy was an act of war not an act of peace or charity.

Boulder-led bills signed Gov. Bill Ritter signed legislation on June 5 that allows renters and others who are unable to install solar panels on their own to roofs join with others to create community “solar gardens.” House Bill 1342, sponsored by Rep. Claire Levy, D-Boulder, and Sen. Suzanne Williams, D-Aurora, allows renters, homeowners and businesses without solar access to own a portion of an off-site solar farm.

Subscribers in a solar garden will own a fraction of the system and reap the same financial benefits through utility bill savings as if the system was physically installed on their home or business. Joined by lawmakers, advocates of the new energy economy and utility officials, Ritter signed HB 1342 on top of a downtown Boulder parking garage, saying that all rooftops have the potential to power America toward a clean-energy future.

Ritter also signed Senate Bill 156, sponsored by Sen. Rollie Heath, D-Boulder, and Rep. Dickey Lee Hullinghorst, D-Gunbarrel, which expands the rights of mobile home owners in Colorado.

“This is a terrific consumer protection bill,” Hullinghorst said in a news release. “It expands the current protections for owners of mobile homes, and it adds new rights to fix the old imbalance of power between landlords and owners. Finally, mobile home owners in private parks can count on basic utilities: a decent power supply and reliable water and sewage service.”

BCAP offers free testing The Boulder County AIDS Project and Boulder County Public Health will take part in National HIV Testing Day on June 26 and will offer free and anonymous HIV antibody testing and counseling by Englishand Spanish-speaking testers.

County hosts vaccine clinic Boulder County Public Health will hold an adolescent vaccination clinic on Saturday, June 12, at 529 Coffman St. in Longmont.

The cost is $14.50 per vaccination, but no child will be turned away for inability to pay. Parents or guardians must bring all immunization records to the appointment.

Parents are encouraged to use the opportunity to get their child’s recommended vaccinations before the school rush later this summer. Appointments are available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 10 June 10, 2010

County seeks volunteers Boulder County Parks and Open Space is looking for people who can volunteer on June 19 to prepare for a prescribed burn at Hall Ranch Open Space later this year.

Hall Ranch supports a variety of plant life, including grassy meadows, dense shrubs and Ponderosa pine forests. To maintain the health of those ecosystems, the county is cooperating with fire protection agencies to conduct a 40-acre fire at Hall Ranch later this year. Volunteers will use hand tools to rake thick piles of pine needles away from large trees, among other tasks, such as removing old fences and non-native weeds.

Volunteers will help protect trees that are important to the habitat while creating safer working conditions for wildland firefighters.

The project runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the minimum age is 12, with adult supervision. To register, e-mail WildWorkVolunteers@ BoulderCounty.org, or call 303-6786193 by June 16.

Lafayette to hold art festival On June 18, Lafayette’s Public Art Committee will unveil 12 new sculptures selected for the Art on the Street (AOTS) program at the Meet the Artists Reception, a fundraiser for public art in Lafayette. The artists will be introduced, and there will be music, wine and a “Taste of Lafayette,” featuring eight local restaurants.

Boulder park upgrades under way The City of Boulder’s Parks and Recreation Department has launched a couple of construction projects designed to improve the community’s recreation opportunities.

The first phase of the Valmont City Park bike park construction started in May and is expected to last until Spring 2011, depending on weather and contractor progress. The new development will include an off-road terrain park, bike trails and a bike pump track; a “tot-lot” play area and plaza; a gravel parking lot (off Airport Road); a restroom facility; and landscaping and irrigation.

The area north of Valmont and Airport roads will be closed during

construction, but the dog park will remain open. This project is funded by city tax revenue and contributions from area businesses, foundations and individuals in partnership with the Boulder Mountainbike Alliance. The Parks and Recreation Department also received a grant of $200,000 from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) in 2009 for the park, which will be used to supplement the existing capital funding allocated for this park development.

The second project, updating and renovating the Harlow Platts Park irrigation system, is scheduled to last for approximately a year. Adult mentors needed The City of Boulder Youth Opportunities Program is seeking adult mentors to offer their professional and community expertise to the Youth Opportunities Advisory Board (YOAB).

YOAB is a group of 16 high school students that advises the City of Boulder government on youth issues and plans occasional events for youth.

Boulder needs mediation volunteers The City of Boulder is seeking community volunteers to serve on the Mediation Service Advisory Committee, which provides information on local mediation and facilitation needs to the Community Mediation Service.

Priority will be given to applicants working in the fields of education, mental health and mediation/facilitation. The committee also seeks applicants of high school age, those with bilingual Spanish skills and community members experienced in working with vulnerable residents.

Prof: Rebalance investments When it comes to investing money in the stock market, actively rebalancing your portfolio is so critical that it can help turn individual investment losers into winners, according to University of Colorado at Boulder Professor Michael Stutzer.

In a recent paper, he showed that using a rebalancing investment strategy could resolve a “Parrondo Paradox,” a phenomenon in game theory in which “given two games, each with a higher probability of losing than winning, it is possible to construct a winning strategy by playing the games alternately.”

In the paper, titled “The Paradox of Diversification,” Stutzer demonstrated a scenario in which two investments were each more likely to lose real income than to earn it.

However, creating an equally weighted portfolio of the two, maintained by rebalancing, was surprisingly more likely to earn real income than to lose it.

Many investors initially create balanced portfolios but then fail to reallocate their funds to keep them balanced.

For example, suppose an investor puts 60 percent of his or her money in a diversified stock fund and 40 percent in a bond fund. If the stock market goes up by 20 percent next year, but bonds stay even, the investor’s portfolio is no longer balanced, Stutzer said. To rebalance the portfolio, the investor would have to sell some of the stock fund, moving that money over into the bond fund to achieve the initial 60-40 mix.

CU names new Wardenburg chief The University of Colorado at Boulder has named Donald Misch as assistant vice chancellor for health and wellness and director of the Wardenburg Health Center, effective July 1. Misch serves as executive director of Northwestern University Health Service in Evanston, Ill., a post he has held since 2003.

Gary Chadwick, who is retiring July 1, is the current Wardenburg director and assistant vice chancellor for health and wellness.

Misch also will direct campus activities concerning alcohol and other drugs and will be the liaison for the campus and to the city on those issues. He will also chair the new CU Impact Coalition, a task force that examines student wellness, health promotion and alcohol and other drug issues on campus.

In addition, Misch will directly oversee the departments of Counseling and Psychological Services, the Student Recreation Center and the Office of Victim Assistance. He will be responsible for a $20 million budget, 200 professional and classified staff and approximately 300 student staff.

New alumni association director Deborah Fowlkes has been named executive director of the University of Colorado Alumni Association. Fowlkes, who will assume the post on July 26, currently serves as assistant vice president for alumni relations and executive director of the Temple University Alumni Association in Philadelphia.

Fowlkes grew up in Boulder. She is a graduate of Boulder High School and the daughter of retired CU mathematics professor Irving Weiss.

Boulder police were dispatched to the 600 block of 22nd Street on May 30 after being informed of an intoxicated male yelling outside.

When the police arrived and contacted the suspect, he became aggressive and irate. The suspect threw a frying pan at an officer, and she used her Taser on him. The 48-year-old was arrested for reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct.

RTD rumble Police arrested a 32-year-old man and charged him with seconddegree assault on June 1, after he ran toward another man from behind at the RTD transfer station in the 1400 block of Walnut Street and hit him in the back and pushed him up against a brick wall. The victim sustained a broken rib and was taken to Boulder Community Hospital.

Fingernailed fireman Boulder police responded to a report of an intoxicated man walking in the 1800 block of 13th Street on June 2. Officers attempted to walk the suspect to their vehicle to transport him to an addiction recovery center for detoxification, but the suspect sat down and refused to go any farther.

Members of the Boulder Fire Department were helping get the suspect on his feet when the suspect dug his fingernails into one of the fireman’s hands and attempted to bite him. The 47-year-old was arrested and charged with thirddegree assault.

Arrest, with a chance of drizzle A Boulder police officer noticed an intoxicated woman stumbling and unable to stand in the area of the 1900 block of 11th Street on June 5.

As the officer attempted to see if she was all right, the 23-year-old woman became verbally offensive and threw a glass of water at the officer. The suspect was arrested and charged with second-degree assault, thirddegree criminal trespass and obstructing a peace officer.

Vrain River in Lyons, near the 3900 block of Ute Highway, became stranded at about 3:27 p.m. on June 5. When rescue personnel arrived, they found the 32-year-old sitting on a concrete river diversion in the middle of the St. Vrain. Two other people in the tubing party of several adults had to be rescued from the west bank of the North St. Vrain River in Meadow Park just before rescuers found the 32-year-old male on the concrete diversion. The 32-year-old was rescued by water rescue swimmers from the Longmont Emergency Unit. He was transported to the hospital with injuries that were not expected to be life-threatening. Boulder County Sheriff ’s Office personnel and members of the Lyons Fire Protection District rescued the other two adults.

Creeks closed The water level and volume in many of Boulder County’s rivers and streams reached peak conditions this week due to higher-than-normal temperatures and the significant snowpack still remaining in the higher elevations.

The conditions have increased snowmelt so much that the Boulder County Sheriff ’s Office, in coordination with the National Weather Service, issued a high water advisory on June 6 for all of the rivers, streams and tributaries in Boulder County.

In addition, on June 7 Sheriff Joe Pelle announced that Boulder Creek and the North and South St. Vrain Creeks will be closed to watercraft for the immediate future.

The closure of Boulder Creek stretches from Barker Dam east of Nederland to the Weld County line, north of Erie.

The closure of the St. Vrain Creeks includes both the North and South St. Vrain canyons and Lyons, and stretches east to Longmont.

The closure includes watercraft such as rafts, belly boats, and inner tubes from floating in the creek. Kayaks and whitewater canoes are still allowed.

Violations of the closure are a class 2 petty offense and will result in a $50 fine.

s the local wildlife getting a little too cozy — skunks under your deck, squirrels in your attic, raccoons in your chimney?

Bears and mountain lions are a subject for another day; we’re talkin’ about the more common critters. The response doesn’t have to be a choice between humane traps and hiring people who will “euthanize” any wild animal that’s being a nuisance.

“I don’t kill healthy animals.

Relocating, almost never,” says Jack Murphy, owner of Aurora-based Urban Wildlife Rescue, Inc. “You need a permit to relocate a wild animal, and most of the time that permit is denied because the chances of a wild animal surviving in new territory are pretty low. It may get attacked as an intruder, and it may not know how to hunt in that area.”

There’s also the possibility that “relocating” a beastie will separate it from its babies or mate, or introduce a disease into a vulnerable population.

Murphy is a wildlife rehabilitator and one of about 15 humane animal control specialists in Colorado. He says that with most wildlife, there is very little danger associated with having animals close by, and he recommends putting up with the presence of a family until the babies leave home.

Murphy generally relies on animal excluder doors — like a pet door that will let animals out of the place they’re nesting but won’t let them back in.

Then the access hole can be sealed up after he’s sure there are no critter babies left behind.

Before you call someone like him, you could try your own hand at humane eviction.

“You can encourage skunks and other animals to leave the place they keep coming back to by tossing in some moth balls when they’re not in,” says Sharon Bokan, small acreage coordinator for the Colorado State University Extension office in Boulder County. “Or you can make a ball of rags, soak it in ammonia, tie a long string around it, and toss the ball into Boulder Weekly

the area with the string end hanging out. When the animals leave, you pull the thing out. Then you close up the access.”

If you can’t figure out how they’re getting in, sprinkle flour around, says Murphy. Disturbed areas will tell you where the unauthorized access is happening. It also announces when intruders have finally cleared out.

The key to handling most problems is not to attract unwanted behaviors in the first place. Bokan says these are the most common lures: Keeping food — or anything that smells like food — outdoors, including in your car. That bowl of dog kibble, fallen fruit, the compost bin, trash cans, uncleaned barbecue grills, the discarded burger wrappers in your car parked outside, and, yes, bird feeders.

Even if you can’t smell it, they all send out the signal that the cafe is open.

That’s why temptation should be kept indoors or in animal-proof containers.

For spilled bird seed, spread out a tarp or cardboard sheet under the feeder and dispose of the fallen food daily.

Unkempt yards — Maybe you prefer to call it “natural,” but uncontrolled weeds, shaggy shrubbery, tall grass, wood piles and the like offer good cover for wildlife. Keep things neat, with plenty of visual clearance down to ground level, and screen off woodpiles and/or use a repellant.

Pets — Never leave your pet unsupervised outdoors for long, and keep your dog on a leash when walking.

Large foxes and coyotes are infamous for carrying off small pets, and they can often climb fences.

Access areas — Check around regularly for holes, breaks, overhanging tree limbs, loose screens or other aids that let critters into your home.

Keep chimneys properly capped, and secure pet doors at night and when you’re not home.

Clueless neighbors — When it appears someone else is attracting wildlife, other than birds, you can seek advice from your local animal control department, Humane Society or the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

Cleaning up Colorado elections

Citizen initiative would provide public financing to campaigns

A

grassroots effort to get dirty money out of Colorado politics — and to even the political playing field — is gathering steam this summer with volunteers working against the clock to gather enough signatures to place a clean elections measure on the statewide ballot.

If Clean Campaigns Colorado (CCC) is successful, Coloradans will be asked to decide in November whether to change the state’s constitution to allow public financing of election campaigns for statewide and state legislative offices. The funding would come from a small tax increase of $5 to $10 for an individual and $10 to $20 for couples filing jointly.

CCC was given the go-ahead to move forward by the Secretary of State’s office on April 28, leaving the group about 11 weeks to gather the 77,000 valid signatures needed. But what might look to some as a last-minute effort to get a ballot initiative rolling is actually the culmination of almost three years of trying to persuade state lawmakers to handle the issue.

Members of CCC have been meeting since November 2006. They started by drafting legislation and carrying it to the Colorado General Assembly in hopes that someone would sponsor a bill about public campaign financing. But that effort went nowhere.

“Nobody would even look at it,” says Jim Hoffmeister, a Boulder resident. “I tried to get it in [Andrew Romanoff ’s] hands — just anyone you can think of, I was pestering. They didn’t want to have anything to do with it. They didn’t even return calls.”

Public campaign financing was “dead in the water,” he says.

Then the group decided to take a different tack.

Following in the footsteps of Arizona and Maine, they opted to take the issue to the voters by framing it as a change to the state’s constitution.

Hoffmeister says public financing of election campaigns would be the biggest and best change to the state’s constitution since Colorado gave women the right to vote in November 1893. If passed, candidates who agree to not accept any private money would be allocated the average amount of dollars it takes to win an election for that particular office.

For example, if the average cost of winning a seat in the Colorado House of Representatives in Boulder County over the past two election cycles were $75,000, Clean Campaign candidates would receive $75,000. If their opponent accepted private money and outspent them and won, the amount allocated would increase in the next election cycle.

ways, proponents believe. First and foremost, it would end politicians’ reliance on special-interest groups for monetary support. Those who enter office after running on public money will be free to listen to their constituents and not lobbying groups, he says.

“They won’t have to worry about being re-elected, so we’d actually have a voice for the people,” he says.

But also, any citizen who qualified would be able to run for public office because the ability to campaign would no longer be limited by a person’s wealth.

With a greater diversity of voices in the General Assembly and statewide offices, the people would have better representation.

Hoffmeister says he was recently asked what would happen if lots of people end up running for office as a result of public financing. “[They asked this] as if that would be a bad thing,” Hoffmeister says. “I said, ‘I would think our dream would have been fulfilled.’ Right now you have very few people who will challenge an incumbent.

Very few people who are outside the parties will even campaign, and it’s understandable why. It costs a fortune. It would open the door for anybody who decides, ‘I can do it better than they’re doing. I would like to run for office.’”

CCC has about 30,000 signatures gathered now and is working hard to reach out to the public to collect the additional 47,000 it will need. The organization is seeking volunteers as well as contributions to offset the cost of the petitions.

Initiative 53 is supported by Interfaith Alliance, Be the Change, Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center and Healthcare for All Colorado.

“We tried to get Common Cause and League of Women voters, Bell Policy Center — all these progressive organizations — and they’ve all hung up and will not endorse us,” Hoffmeister says.

Jenny Flanagan, executive director of Colorado Common Cause, says Common Cause strongly supports the public financing of elections but does not support Initiative 53.

“Initiative 53 is not the right policy, and we can’t support it for that reason,” Flanagan says. “We believe that public financing is the right system, if the right policy is in place, and Initiative 53 doesn’t set up that right policy. It’s got some major policy flaws, and that’s where our concerns are.”

Flanagan says Initiative 53 won’t provide sufficient funds for a candidate to run an effective campaign and that it has no mechanism to keep the campaigns competitive. If a candidate who accepts private money is outspending a candidate using public financing,

Initiative 53 doesn’t enable Clean Campaign candidates to compensate through matching funds or small private donations.

On the national level, Common Cause is supporting the Fair Elections Now Act (FENA) that is making its way through Congress. FENA would permit candidates to raise additional money through small, private donations, she says.

Hoffmeister says Initiative 53 deliberately does not contain a provision for “matching funds,” because those provisions have resulted in constitutionality challenges. On Tuesday this week, the U.S. Supreme Court vacated an order of the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and reinstated an injunction against Arizona’s “matching funds” provision, which some believe restricts free speech and is therefore unconstitutional.

Nationally known populist commentator Jim Hightower is in favor of Initiative 53 and will be in Colorado this Friday and Saturday to support the measure.

“To me, you take every step you can to democratize the process, and this does it,” Hightower says. “It has worked phenomenally in Maine and North Carolina and New Mexico and Arizona, and now it’s in Connecticut and is being expanded elsewhere. A number of cities are doing it. You can argue endlessly about who has the best route to get there, but to me, we ought to be jumping on any effort that gets corrupting corporate money out of the system.”

The potential benefits of Initiative 53 for Colorado are immense, he says.

“You get a little more democracy, a little less corporate control of public policy and a little more faith that people actually matter in America again,” Hightower says.

Hightower will speak in favor of Initiative 53 this Friday, June 11, at Denver’s Stapleton Park. Kenny Perkins and the Night Shift will perform. The event starts at 6 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

As of press time, no one has come forward formally to oppose Initiative 53, but Hoffmeister suspects that’s only because many don’t believe the initiative will make it onto the ballot.

Hoffmeister hopes to defy those expectations. He and other volunteers are working with the attitude that the signatures are there and that they can get the issue before voters this fall.

“We’re going all out,” he says.

wo local Democrats vying for Paul Weissman’s seat in the Colorado House are trading barbs over what some claim is a negative campaign tactic known as a “push poll.”

Weissman, who is term-limited, is a Louisville Democrat representing House District 12, which includes Lafayette, Louisville and part of Longmont.

Lafayette resident Jake Williams has alleged that his opponent in the Aug. 10 Democratic primary, Matt Jones of Louisville, had run a push poll the week of May 31 in an effort to leave negative impressions of Williams in voters’ minds.

A push poll is couched as a way to test campaign messages, but its intent is to sway voters by associating a candidate with negative labels. For example, in the Longmont City Council election last fall, some accused a group supporting Katie Witt of targeting her opponent, Karen Benker, in a push poll. The poll asked questions like “If you knew that Karen Benker discriminated against a Christian church organization unfairly based on their religion, would that make you more or less favorable toward her?”

Williams, who edged Jones 53 percent to 47 percent at the Democratic Assembly in April, issued a news release on June 3 claiming that Jones’ poll asked voters whether they would be less likely to vote for a candidate if they knew he had been a “labor lobbyist.”

Williams previously served as a legislative advocate for the labor organization Service Employees International Union.

Democratic activist Maria Handley is quoted in the statement as having received one of the polling calls.

“The polling sounded slanted, so I hope this isn’t a prelude to a negative primary season,” she says.

Asked for a response, the Jones campaign issued a statement of its own, saying that Williams “recklessly and knowingly fabricated information” about Jones’ campaign. Jones says Handley “has either forgotten what she heard on the phone or is willfully misrepresenting the facts.”

“In my previous service in the Colorado House I was charged with supervising numerous legislative races,” Jones says. “I know what a push poll is, and we didn’t tolerate them then, and I would not be a party to them today. The real question is why would Jake think Boulder Weekly

Jones also provided the text of the question cited by Williams. Voters are asked to assess descriptions of “the candidates for state representative,” saying whether each phrase would make them more or less likely to vote for the person.

Jones says in his release that it is a class 2 misdemeanor to recklessly make false claims about an opponent in an election. Stephanie Walton of the Jones campaign said that rather than press charges, the campaign would accept a written apology from Williams.

“We understand the strain of the campaign perhaps made Mr. Williams overeager, which generated into an overheated attack from his campaign,” Walton said. “His lack of experience is no excuse for this behavior, or for not knowing Colorado election law.”

Williams responded by quoting others who received the survey calls and viewed them as negative campaigning.

“It was a push poll,” Dwight High of Lafayette said. “The questioner was clearly trying to influence my opinion about Jake by associating Jake’s name with different labels.”

“It certainly seemed to me that the poll was intended to help spread negative messages about Jake,” added John Bigger of Longmont.

Williams, 32, told Boulder Weekly that, in addition to the “labor lobbyist” label, voters were asked how they would feel about a candidate who wants to raise their taxes, who has a lack of experience and is under the age of 50.

Williams maintains that he didn’t break the law.

“I’m happy to have my opponent spending money on push polls and lawyers and not talking to voters,” he says.

Jones told Boulder Weekly that he hasn’t decided whether to take legal action if Williams doesn’t apologize. He stresses that the poll question did not mention either candidate by name. Jones says that unlike his survey, push polls are typically conducted right before an election and target a large group of people.

Jones points to a Wikipedia definition of push polls that says the term is “sometimes used inaccurately to refer to legitimate polls which test political messages, some of which may be negative.”

idden in Plain Sight” is a new Boulder Weekly series on the plight of the undocumented Latino immigrant in Boulder County. We’ll share insights on a population in our midst that we don’t often “see.”

With the passage of the controversial law HB 1070 in Arizona, which gives more power to police when it comes to cracking down on undocumented workers, this “hidden” population is now in the spotlight. We’ll bring you voices of undocumented Boulder County residents, the majority of them hailing from Mexican roots. We’ll share the stories of immigrants without legal status working in areas such as restaurants, agriculture, construction, janitorial services, nanny roles and meatpacking plants. We’ll reveal the character of Latino youth and the Catch-22 challenges they face as unintended casualties of a broken and complicated immigration system.

We’ll learn about the lifestyle this population leads in the alleged “home of the free.” How are they affecting our local and national economies and at what personal cost? To what extent are the socio-economic realities of their daily lives influencing the decisions they make?

What do they have to say about the risks they took in crossing the border, undocumented, for the elusive dream of a better future for their families? How do they feel about it now, in relation to what they’re doing to support themselves and their familias against the perils of being discovered? What hopes do they cling to amidst the fears of arrest and possible deportation? What happens

This series will also bring to light the opinions of an immigration attorney, human rights activists, politicians, community members, social service entities, government officials, nonprofits and companies in industries that have historically used the services of immigrant workers. We’ll hear what some of them have to say about our current immigration system and the type of reform that’s needed to solve the root of the problem that

leaves so many fearful and in a state of limbo.

Our first installment will offer a snapshot of the plight of the undocumented Hispanic through the eyes of those who provide assistance to this hidden segment. We spent time chatting with an immigration attorney, a human rights activist, a youth organizer, a Latino community leader and a volunteer fighting for the education and equality of immigrant children. We wanted to get their take on this constituency, their challenges and their contributions in Boulder County.

His eyes sparkle when he describes achievements honored at “Si Se Puede” (Yes We Can) community parties that celebrate youth who turned their lives around as young adults despite earlier brushes with the law, teen pregnancy or limited socio-economic conditions.

“We honor the 4.0 GPA and honor students,” explains Benavidez, “and, indeed, we should. But who honors these kids who didn’t have access to the same opportunities? Our community does.”

He’s proud of the work his corps of teen “advisors” who, as part of a restorative justice initiative, and in partnership with EcoCycle, increased recycling in their Latino community by 130 percent. His eyes get misty when he speaks of the Latina madre in his neighborhood who, for years, has been walking his neighborhood with her son, ringing the bell and selling ice cream to neighbors from a small wheeled cart. He speaks of lifted spirits, after participating as a guest speaker at the graduation celebration for approximately 300 people, 90 percent of them Latinos, who were honored with certificates

for completing 200 hours of ESL training at an adult education class in partnership with the St. Vrain Valley School District.

When he speaks to community groups and conducts trainings about this diverse Latino population that he calls a demographic within a demographic, Benavidez is deliberate when he names the three things he says are most important in the lives of the 46 million Hispanics in this country: God, family and friends.

“We take our relationships seriously,” Benavidez says. “If we’re going to really understand this Mexican demographic, we need to remember that cultural differences affect our community.”

Benavidez provides a collection of some of the highlights of this segment. In Longmont, approximately 20 percent of the city is made up of Mexicans. People who are highly family-oriented, loyal. Individuals who value respect, dignity, facesaving; these are important aspects in their culture.

Sense of time, says Benavidez, is different. For immigrants who have arrived in this country from low socio-economic backgrounds, “the only thing you think of is today, because it’s the only thing you can count on,” he says.

He looks me in the eye with a thoughtful stare when I ask him what he thinks about the relationship between undocumented immigrants and their economic impact in Boulder County. And while I’m at it, I venture once more to ask him what he thinks about the need for reform to our immigration system. “First, they’re here for no other reason than to escape the poverty and uncertainty of the life they and their families faced back home,” he says.

Benavidez believes that immigration inequity is a problem we have created. “If the jobs are not being filled,” explains Benavidez, “then we blame the people we bring in to fill those jobs? Excuse me?”

Immigration attorney Laurel Herndon of the nonprofit Legal Immigrant Center of Boulder County shares a similar view and provides historical background that we often fail to remember.

On the backs of immigrants Does the economic boom of the ’90s ring a bell?

“What we have to really contemplate is if this country would have had that undocumented boom without the undocumented worker,” she says.

What existed at the time was this pseudo-secret but quasi-open, alluring invitation that if you were willing to come to this country and work hard, often for minimum wage, there would be a way to find you a job. But it wasn’t just that there were jobs that people here didn’t want to do.

“It’s that there weren’t enough workers for all of the jobs that needed to be done,” she says. “And so now what we have in the community are all of those workers who helped us have that wonderful economic boom of the ’90s and, in essence, we’re now turning on them and treating them like disposable objects. We have to question the morality of doing that.”

Needless to say, this presents an ethical disconnect, and one that we often conveniently remember to forget. When we needed them, says Herndon, we pretended everything was fine. And now that we don’t?

“We treat it as a safety valve, as if we could just turn off the spigot and expect people to disappear.

to be living, breathing individuals who have their own dreams and plans for the future.”

Human rights activist Betty Ball, who is coadministrator and coordinator of the Nonviolence Education Program for the Rocky Mountain Peace & Justice Center (RMPJC), says it’s just plain wrong to treat undocumented Latinos unjustly, period.

“But especially considering they are in fact refugees from a global economy, which the U.S. is the main force of creating,” she says. “Many of these folks would rather be home, working their land, participating with their families, like they always have.

NAFTA and our multinational corporations have forced them to seek a new home in which to try to survive. And our country is making it incredibly difficult for them just to live.”

Who are these people?

According to Ball, they’re people who represent a valuable addition to our community, who provide us with a richness of culture, a friendly nature, loyalty, a solid work ethic and a resilient willingness to do whatever it takes to ensure they can survive. They’re people like the ones Benavidez knows and ones Herndon sees as clients. They are people who have children in this country, kids born in this state who are U.S. citizens, kids who attend our schools.

“But as we put on the squeeze, we have children going hungry because their fathers are losing their jobs — jobs that they may have had for 10 years,” says Herndon. And all of a sudden we have this idea that we need to go after employers of undocumented immigrants. We’re again forgetting that they’re the same employers who were helping us in the ’90s.

I think this has a negative impact on our community and a negative effect on our international soul.”

From a human rights perspective, Ball sees the Latino plight as one where a people who have been forced off their land, due mostly to limiting socioeconomic conditions, are forced to seek a home in a foreign country where they may or may not know one other person.

“They’re treated like second-class people,” she says. “Their rights are trodden upon by U.S. institutions. And with the economic crisis in this country and in the world, they’re scape-goated by people fearful of ending up with no job.”

We’ve reported before on the limbo status of approximately 65,000 young men and women who, upon graduating from high school, have little to look forward to because of their undocumented status and the restrictions placed on their future.

In a nutshell, this new generation of undocumented youth can’t drive legally or board a plane post-9/11, since those require proof of a federal identification document. They also can’t get a job since they can’t apply for a Social Security number.

At the federal level, The DREAM (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) Act, which has been introduced every year since 2001 and has yet to pass, would allow kids who were brought to the States before the age of 16 a possible path to resident status since it was “no fault” of their own that their parents brought them to this country. Kids who’ve been in the U.S. for at least five years and stayed out of trouble would have two options to get resident status under the act: two years of college or two years of military service.

According to Erika Blum, volunteer advocate for VOICE (Voices of Immigrant Children for Education Equality) in Boulder, both the DREAM Act and tuition equity are needed. “Tuition equity would allow undocumented students who have been in Colorado for a minimum of three years to have residency, not legal status, allowing them to pay instate tuition,” she says. “Because if we don’t have tuition equity in Colorado, that’s just going to leave these kids the military.”

But it can’t stop there. Blum contends that out of the estimated 11 million to 20 million people who are undocumented, there are 2 million youth and children throughout the United States right now that don’t have a path to fix their status, and comprehensive immigration reform is needed. The bill she’s referring to is CIR-ASAP, which was introduced by U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Illinois.

She thinks it’s a very good model for what’s needed, and VOICE has been actively lobbying for its passage since December of last year.

“The main issue with a broken immigration system for these young people is that by not having a way to fix their status, they’re constantly at risk of arrest and deportation,” says Blum. “VOICE members who speak publicly at our events are taking an incredible personal risk. People need to understand that the laws have to change before any of this can be solved. That’s key to comprehensive immigration reform.”

VOICE works closely with the Reform Immigration for America Campaign (RIFA) to put pressure on both the president and the Senate to get CIR-ASAP introduced.

Before a stone is cast With fierce conviction, Betty Ball reminds us that no human is illegal. And 18-year-old Flor Marquez, a student at Metropolitan State College of Denver, a member of the recently formed Longmont Youth for Equality (LYFE) and an immigration advocate, believes wholeheartedly that if Anglos were put in a situation where their children were in danger and parents struggled to put food on the table for their kids, they would leave their home and move to another country where there was hope for a better life.

umented Latino to convince people that it’s OK to deport them,” says Marquez. “I’d like to remind people that we’re Betty Ball all immigrants. Anglo families were immigrants at one point, and they all came to the U.S. for a better future.”

If you’re undecided about where you stand on the plight of the undocumented immigrant, before you cast a stone in one pool or the other, consider what attorney Herndon wishes that people understood. “We have a difficult history when it comes to our immigration policy. It would behoove us to consider whether those policies have led to where we are today, and whether we think these policies were appropriate,” she says. “So in essence, we need to look in the mirror and see what part of the responsibility for there being 12 million to 15 million undocumented people here ... is ours.”

Herndon thinks we’re used to being pandered to by politicians who tell voters that we’re very good and never say to us, “You know, maybe you’re not so good; maybe you didn’t do your homework and hold your politicians accountable. Maybe you didn’t pay enough attention to what was going on because it was benefitting you; you were living the high life in the 1990s, and you didn’t take a serious look at whether the policies were sound,” she says.

The Future I asked Marquez if she thought

her generation still held hope for a future that consisted of full-on comprehensive immigration reform. “The people I speak with still have dreams about what they want to be,” she says. “Some still say, ‘I want to be a doctor,’ ‘I want to be a nurse,’ or, ‘When I’m famous.’ So there’s still that hope, especially with our group. Sometimes our energy gets burned out. But I feel like, overall, there’s still hope that our president will step up to the plate.”

Herndon also voices hope for what lies ahead, despite the uncertainty of that road.

“I think there’s always hope. The question is whether the Latinos’ confidence in us is rational,” she added.

“I’d like to think that it is, and that we can correct complicated policies that had unintended consequences and recognize that we have many good people in our community who could do so much more for their own families and for the community as a whole if we let them.”

When Marquez attended the last rally in Arizona a couple of weeks ago, she took a picture that moved her. It was a photo of the DREAM Act flag and a sign that said, “Obama, you are my Martin Luther King’s dream come true; now be brave and make our dreams come true.”

Donkey heads What had been whispered about for months was finally confirmed by the White House this week: the Obama administration talked to Andrew Romanoff about job possibilities when he was mulling his run against Sen. Michael Bennet.

Now, whether these talks were meant to dissuade him from running depends on whom you ask. Even Romanoff says he was never offered or promised a job.

But he has made no bones about the fact that D.C. insiders clearly prefer Bennet and did not want Romanoff in that race.

In February, he told Boulder Weekly about an experience he had more than a year ago while he was in Washington, D.C. “Someone told me, ‘It’s a nice little reputation you’ve built for yourself. It’d be a shame if something happened to it.’

I thought I’d wake up with a donkey’s head in my bed.”

What was particularly amusing about the White House revelation last week was how quickly the Republicans jumped on it. Since Romanoff is widely seen as a tougher opponent for Republican candidate Jane Norton to beat, you would think that the GOP would not add fuel to a fire that makes Bennet look bad. But in this case, there was a loftier goal: making Obama look bad by pointing out that he engages in the kind of politics he condemns.

We actually have to agree with the Republican spin-meisters when they call for Bennet to reveal what he knew — and when he knew it — when it came to the job talks with Romanoff.

BP’s Google gambit There are so many reasons to loathe BP that they’re getting hard to count. If you haven’t been sickened by oil sludge on beaches, the sight of suffering and dying wildlife or the news that BP met survivors of their oil rig explosion at the shore asking them to sign forms saying that they hadn’t suffered any personal losses — yes, company CEOs are apparently are more concerned about being sued than meeting the needs of workers who just survived a freaking explosion — then perhaps this next bit of news will finally make you hurl.

While the Gulf of Mexico is dying, BP is spending hard cash on Google and Yahoo search terms in order to have their own website appear first on any Internet search about the catastrophe.

Search “oil spill” or “BP oil spill” or “Gulf of Mexico oil spill,” the first site to greet you is www.BP.com/ GulfOfMexicoResponse. Click there, and you can read how BP is doing everything it can and how BP rocks and how BP will make everything better.

A BP spokeswoman told CNN that the oil giant is doing this in order to better “assist those who are most impacted and help them find the right forms and the right people quickly and effectively.”

Right.

What BP is really doing, of course, is taking advantage of concern about the spill to advertise and put their point of view ahead of all others. It’s spin-doctoring in the Internet age.

Let’s hope someone out there is buying up search terms like “oil slime,” “corporate scum” and “fucking asshole” and then linking them to hard information about the profits oil and gas CEOs make, the political ties they have and the lengths to which they’re willing to go to cover their own asses when they screw up.

ourteen years, give or take, is a long time to be the guy off to one side, but Dave Rawlings, the guitarist/songwriter who’s been accompanist to Gillian Welch since the mid-’90s, is a studiously pragmatic musician. Welch’s voice and restless fluency in any number of Americana stylings — folk, old-timey, a little rock ’n’ roll, gospel — is and always has been the centerpiece of the partnership.

But Rawlings also bears the sensibilities of a producer — he has worked in that role in both this context as well as prior work with Old Crow and Robyn Hitchcock — and he knows when a song just can’t be wrapped about Gillian.

Enough time goes by, and eventually there’s a body of material that suggests a reversal of roles.

of Welch-watchers who had been expecting a new Gillian album — and had been waiting six years for it.

“There’s always been a lot of songs that have been partially finished, or completely finished, that we would discard because they didn’t suit what we were doing with Gillian, even though we might like them.”

More or less, this is material that most Welch fans will find familiar.

More or less.

We mentioned to Rawlings that we noted two distinctly different reactions to the album’s wide stylistic embrace — a lot of the critics, for what it’s worth, appreciated and lauded the record for its graceful dodging and weaving between folk and Appalachia, while some of the rank and file wished they could have heard an entire record of solo ballads or bluegrass raves or parlor crooners, a deeper dive into the subgenres represented here. We asked Rawlings about that.

“A lot of time when you’re working on a record, you’re truly just trying to finish the record any way you can. You don’t have as many options as people might think. And one of the things I used on the record as a benchmark that I’ve used other times is just whether I think the songs hold up. And once I’m committed to a song, any way I can get that song to tape, so you can listen to it beginning to end, I’m pretty happy with it.

“I don’t really think the record was too disjointed, because there’s really nothing stylistically on that record that we haven’t touched on at one time or another. I mean, there was a version of ‘Ruby’

with electric guitars and drums that got cut, and that would have taken us pretty far afield. And that sort of introspective, solo version of ‘I Hear Them All’ was a surprise to me since I had expected that would be a duet track with Gillian and I. You know, some people have more specific tastes than musicians themselves actually have, but it didn’t feel like it was that far afield to me.”

For all the effortless buoyancy that Rawlings displays here (more than one observer couldn’t resist expressing their disbelief that this was only Rawlings’ first solo outing), he is also a meticulous technician (he and Welch met while they were both studying at Boston’s prestigious Berklee School of Music), with the pitiless ear of the guy behind the soundboard, watching the clock and calling takes. We wondered if he appreciated the role of actually producing himself for once.

“Absolutely, that was a shift. I don’t think I would have been able to do it had I not worked with the Crows and Robyn Hitchcock and Gillian to be aware of what the producer’s job was, enough to keep it separate from whatever artistic job I was trying to do. You know, I would listen to my voice, or listen to the tapes back, and think, ‘what do we do with this poor guy to make it all work?’ With Gillian … y’know,

Gillian is just a huge talent, and there’s lots of ways to make good records on Gillian, but like anyone else, there’s ways to make bad records on her as well, and we’ve gone through that, where you listen to the way she sings or plays something and you just say, ‘Wow, that just doesn’t work.’ And you know, that’s your job. To find the stuff that sets off what someone does best, and not to be too put off or discouraged by the stuff that doesn’t work.

“Because, in the world of music, the stuff that doesn’t work is of no import.

It just doesn’t matter. Like, it may be that on this green earth, there may have been only one way the Kingsmen were going to get ‘Louie Louie’ to sound like that, and be a big hit. They may have tried a hundred times and failed, but the fact that they got it that one time is all that mattered.”

Rawlings also expressed delighted surprised when Friend of a Friend was nominated for no less than four Americana Music Association Awards last month — the Machine up for duo/ group, “Ruby” for song of the year, the CD for album of the year and Rawlings himself for instrumentalist of the year — and none of this false modesty stuff either. Rawlings seriously didn’t see that one coming.

“I would be lying if I said I thought

that anyone would even notice that this record came out. You know, when we finished it, we just said, ‘Well, it’s done and it’s not terrible, let’s just throw it out there and see what happens.’ So, for it to be recognized is a great thrill and a surprise. I didn’t expect it at all.”

Rawlings brings the Machine (with some friends) to Chautauqua, and then plays Telluride the next night.

“I remember the first time we played Telluride, a decade or more ago, we showed up and they put us in a trailer and told us they’d come and get us when it was time to go on, and then they never came to get us,” he laughed.

“But … Telluride’s always a blast.”

And finally, the question that’s dogged Rawlings since last November when he started promoting Friend of a Friend. What about the Gillian record? Seven years is a long time in the oven.

“You know, when people ask me when the Gillian record will come, I tell them, ‘On the happiest day of my life.’ We were in the studio right up to the moment when we left for the tour, and two days after Telluride, or however long it takes to drive to Nashville, we’ll be back in there. There’s still maybe a song or two to be written, but … we’re closing in on it.”

Sleepy Sun leave their indie-rock brethren in San Francisco

n the summer of 2006, I was drumming in a fledgling San Francisco psychedelic indie-rock band called The Love X Nowhere when we played to a sparse West L.A. crowd along with a bluesy young opening act called Mania, made up of scruffy UC Santa Cruz kids. “Mania Slays Souls,” the act’s hilarious promotional buttons exclaimed; I wore one on my jacket the rest of my time in San Francisco, but never bothered to check up on the youngsters again. during a festival in France on a separate stage. I was mainly captivated by the masks, big drums and the lead singer yelling in between songs, ‘Je t’aime, muthafuckas! Je t’aime!’ You don’t need to be French to find that hilarious and surreal as fuck.”

Though it’d be a stretch to include the word “metal” in any description of Sleepy Sun’s at times distorted and jangly music, much of the band’s tangible intensity lies in a prog-rock-worthy penchant for sweetly singing about sinister spirituality over a thick sludge of heavy guitar and drums.

“So Bret, who does most of the lyrical writing, likes to mix it up,” Williams says.

“He uses specific words like goddess and lord to express what I hope is his search for spiritual understanding. Instead of staying away from descriptive religious imagery, which can sometimes spell it out, he uses it to make you think — hopefully.”

With titles that include “Acid Love,” “Desert God,” “Snow Goddess” and “Sandstorm Woman,” Sleepy Sun doesn’t exactly caress the intellect so much as call listeners to lose themselves in an Axis: Bold As Love-style psychedelic-rock haze before being pummeled with trauma-inducing garage-rock detonations.

Essentially, the band’s meteoric rise continues because they do, indeed, slay souls. And, according to Williams, Sleepy Sun’s constant touring has yet to cause the band’s members to slay each other.

“Oh, there’ve been fights but, you know, being a touring band is a lot like being pirates,” she jokes. “A few flying words below deck comes with the territory.”

Very rarely does the kind of success Sleepy Sun is enjoying come with the territory it inhabits as one of the innumerable indie bands from San Francisco but, as the Hi-Dive audience will learn Sunday, Sleepy Sun isn’t just another band from San Francisco.

Emerging from the shadows

Karen Elson on being the musician who is Jack White’s wife

aren Elson is not Jack White’s wife. Well, technically she is, but the famous model-turned-musician lives under a looming shadow of attachment to The White Stripes that seems a bit unfair. Perhaps it’s best said, then, that Karen Elson is more than Jack White’s wife.

After the initial media storm dies down, Elson’s debut album should begin to sing for itself. The Ghost Who Walks, taken from a childhood nickname for Elson’s tall, pale frame, beautifully haunts the hallways of country, rock and folk music, and the early reviews of the album give artistic credit where it is due.

But as Elson describes, her musical pipe dreams predate her recent move to Nashville or even her marriage to White in 2005.

They’re a childhood hope rooted in a true passion for music and creativity that could never materialize until the right elements were in place.

“I’m a big believer in fate and I think there’s a multitude of reasons why I never made a record before now,” Elson says. “The big one is that I simply wasn’t ready, but I was also incredibly busy as a model. It’s interesting now for whatever reason that I can actually manage the two. In my twenties, I wasn’t much busier, but I wasn’t in the right place to juggle everything.

“I also didn’t know exactly what type of music I wanted to make,” she continues. “I was still essentially sitting in my room with a four-track, and I didn’t quite have a clear idea. And I like to have a good idea about those things. I like to have confidence in myself, and it took me a while to feel confident about the songs that I was writing, before I wanted to share them. It took me a while, but I’m OK with that. I’m

OK with things taking their time. For me, that’s a process that works quite well.”

With two young children, Scarlett Teresa and Henry Lee, it’s amazing that the present moment became the ideal time to record. Yet Elson explains it’s her parental experience that allowed her to focus on utilizing her time well.

“Most people who have children realize the sense of time that they’ve never had before,” says Elson.

“Everything with your children, you’re constantly reminded that you have to savor these fleeting moments while they come and go. Then also, it’s just the fact that as a parent, the free time mostly goes out of the window. So now I have this appreciation and know that with the free time I have, I better make the most of it by doing something I really love and not just wasting that time.”

new meaning for Elson. The close proximity to the constant act of creating removed the nervousness of having to go in herself.

“By living in Nashville and Jack having built a studio in our backyard, I’m surrounded by music and musicians,” Elson explains. “That also gave me the confidence to step out by myself as a musician.

I’ve been in the studio a few times with Jack while he was singing background vocals on other projects, or just hanging out while he’s recording himself.

“I think it demystified the process quite a bit. It made it real or a part of regular life as opposed to this gigantic task that I had to undertake. It was almost the way our life is in Nashville is that making music is a natural part of that life. It’s not an overly thought-out or analyzed or scrutinized process. I think being a part of that helped demystify it like that.”

After living in cities throughout Europe and several years in the Big Apple from her career as a model for everyone from Marc Jacobs and Yves Saint Laurent to Versace and Chanel, Elson now has the down time to properly tend to a family and a new musical chapter.

“I love New York,” she explains. “It’s one of my favorite cities in the whole world, but it’s such a busy city that it was hard for me to shut off. It was hard for me to be introverted and stay still long enough to actually get the songs out. Just being in the peace and quiet of Nashville really helped me get more into the songs and spend more time writing them. I wasn’t distracted by the city. In fact, Nashville being a musical city is so supportive and inspiring to write songs.

It’s really magical.”

Thompson’s last stand

Boulder author chronicles the final crusade of a raging moralist

I

n 2001, convicted murderer Lisl Auman was 13 months into a life sentence when she wrote a letter to the author of a book that had recently brought her some joy in prison.

“I laughed out loud while reading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas during my stay (13 months) at the Denver County Jail. Thank you for helping to bring a smile to my face,” she wrote, going on to say, “My name is Lisl Auman and I was convicted of felony murder in 1998 for the murder of a police officer. However — I maintain my innocence!!! …

Somehow, the letter made it out of the perpetually overflowing mailbag and into the hands of Hunter S. Thompson, writer, journalist and pioneer of a new form of narrative journalism called “gonzo.” It was fitting that Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas would inspire Auman to write.

The book is Thompson’s 1972 masterpiece, a novel filled with drugs, excess and righteous indignation as the once-glorious façade of the American dream crumbled around a generation. As Mikal Gilmore wrote in Rolling Stone, “the fear and loathing Thompson was writing about — a dread of both interior demons and the psychic landscape of the nation around him — wasn’t merely his own; he was also giving voice to the mindset of a generation that had held high ideals and was now crashing hard

against the walls of American reality.”

Thompson fired back a response to Auman some time later, and he then went to work setting in motion the machinations of a massive and eventually successful campaign to get her out of jail. Boulder author and political strategist Matt Moseley helped coordinate that campaign, and he has chronicled those experiences in Dear Dr. Thompson, a new book about the Lisl Auman case and the injustice of the concept of felony murder.

The basic story of Auman’s case is this: A sweet but naive girl struggling with low esteem, Auman found herself drifting from one destructive relationship to another throughout high school and several years after.

She found the courage to end one, but her ex wouldn’t immediately return her belongings from his apartment after the relationship ended. So she enlisted two men — skinheads, as it turned out — to help her break into his room so that she could get her possessions back.

The skinheads stole her ex’s things, as well, and some neighbors called the cops. After a dramatic car chase into Denver, Auman and Tao Jaehnig left the car and began fleeing on foot. Officers arrested Auman first, and while she was in custody, Jaehnig shot Officer Bruce VanderJagt in the head, killing him instantly, and then grabbed VanderJagt’s gun and shot himself.

murder rule, which basically says that anyone involved in a felony can be held liable for a murder committed during the course of that felony — even if someone else pulls the trigger. Auman was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for a murder committed while she was in handcuffs in the back of a police car.

Moseley read about the case and faxed a memo to Thompson outlining a public relations strategy for a potential campaign to free Auman. That day, Thompson called back and said he wanted to meet.

“It is odd, now that I think about it, writing the memo, what a blind shot that was. I had read Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’72 when I was 19, I think, and that’s pretty much what inspired me to get into politics. ... He was always somebody I wanted to have a drink with, but he wasn’t really my hero,” says Moseley, whose shrine of gonzo memorabilia in his writing shed in his central Boulder home indicates how he felt after getting to know him.

Dear Dr. Thompson is a gripping and finely written chronicle of the Auman case. Auman, trying to keep her head low while on probation, declined to participate in the book, something Moseley admits initially disappointed him, but which helped the book.

“It freed me up. I went from being really her advocate, you know, I was her family spokesperson, to telling a broader view. When I really wrote the book, I wasn’t her advocate anymore, I was really telling more of a broader story, not just this ‘Lisl was a nice girl who grew up in Colorado, and wasn’t she sweet.’”

The Colorado Supreme Court made a ruling that led to Auman’s release in 2005, the details of which are complex and fascinating. But the book is about more than that, and it should be required reading for anyone curious about the last crusade of journalist, writer and raging moralist Hunter S. Thompson.

The crusade against contraception

he birth control pill turned 50 years old last month. This marked a milestone in the world of contraception — for women, sexuality and reproductive health and family planning.

Of course, women have always had a ways of preventing pregnancy. In 1500 B.C., Egyptians used a mixture of ground dates, acacia bark and honey to create a spermicidal product, and crocodile dung for an anti-pregnancy suppository. In 1839, the Charles Goodyear company put its rubber to the road (less literally), creating a vulcanized rubber condom. In 1917 Margaret Sanger, the mother of birth control and Planned Parenthood of America, teamed up with moneybags Katherine Dexter McCormick to fund research biologists Gregory Pincus and John Rock to develop the dream, a magic “pill.” Today, contraception has a closet full of clothes, including shots, IUD implants, vaginal rings, diaphragms, patches, pills and, of course, the main staple — the condom.

For centuries, however, various groups have battled against contraception. In her article “Masters of the Uterus,” Elizabeth Gettlemen describes how the controversy started in 1727, when author Daniel Defoe compared contraception to infanticide. Contraception took another hit in the mouth in 1873, when an insecure postal inspector named Anthony Comstock crusaded against birth control by labeling it “obscenity.” The Comstock Act that followed prohibited mailing contraceptives or information about them.

This was not reversed for nearly 100 years, in 1965. In 1930, Pope Pius XI deemed all contraception a grave sin — a ban which is still in place today.

U.S. presidents in the past 30 years have also crusaded against contraception.

In 1986, Ronald Reagan rejected Surgeon General C. Everett Koop’s recommendation to expand sex education and have a countrywide condom PR push. Clinton’s Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders was derided for advocating family planning, then released from her position for a comment about masturbation — which in my loud opinion was taken way out of context. Bush reinstated the gag rule, spearheaded abstinence-only education and increased birth control costs on college campuses by 400 to 500 percent.

When Obama reversed the gag rule and included stimulus money for family planning, Rush Limbaugh suggested putting pictures of Nancy Pelosi in every cheap motel room to keep birth rates down. If he’s going to make such comments, he might as well take the heat and offer hotels thoroughly unappetizing head shots of himself.

In a world where contraception is pitted against procreation, we are lucky to have several superwomen standing by.

Gloria Steinem gloriously states, “Sexuality is not only a way we procreate but also a way we communicate and express love and caring and community.”

Nancy Gibbs of Time magazine shows how the pill allows women to maintain jobs without the fear of having to quit due to pregnancy. More women in college and careers means mom-hood comes later in life, leading to a decrease in population growth — not a bad thing in a world starving for resources!

That said, overpopulation is not the primary issue plaguing our country. Our colossal carbon footprint comes from overconsumption, the devil of the developed world. With more women working, there is a general increase in productivity and economic growth. More money made means more money spent — hence a greater capacity for overconsumption.

Unfortunately, our global carbon footprint suffers either way. Birth control curbs unwanted pregnancies and excessive population growth. Yet too much contraception can mean a greater quality of life and the tendency to over-consume.

Contraception clearly has a tenuous place in society. It symbolizes sexual and reproductive freedom, steeped in religious controversy. It manifests economic and educational empowerment of women, underlined by the irony that more productivity can lead to overconsumption.

The answer is not to eliminate or reduce contraception. It’s to walk on our planet with greater respect for all beings. So roll up your sleeves, sing happy birthday to the pill, and make a wish that the second half of life’s roller coaster is just as joyous a ride as the first.

any fruits can be grown successfully here on the Front Range of Colorado. At one time, there were commercial apple orchards in Boulder and Fort Collins, commercial sour cherry orchards and canneries between Loveland and Fort Collins and commercial raspberry production in various places. Cheap shipping, more reliable weather and harvests in other regions, and a raspberry disease chased these operations to other states. However there is great potential here for the home gardener to grow tree- and bushripened fruit that is delicious, organic, fresh and economical.

Conventional agriculture has an economic priority, that places the emphasis on quantity over quality, on shelf-life and shipability over flavor, and on cosmetic appearance, over nutritional value. You may know the song about “…two things that money can’t buy; and that’s true love and home-grown tomatoes.” Well, the same holds true for homegrown strawberries, home-grown peaches, home-grown plums, most home-grown apples, and, in fact, for all the fruits.

At home we can nourish our soils so the soil life flourishes and the fruit is more nourishing.

Recent studies found that you have to eat two apples today to get the nutritional value that was found in one apple in the 1940s.

We can choose the really greattasting varieties to grow like Ogalalla Strawberry, Anne Raspberry, Stanley Plum and Cortland Apple that cannot be found in the supermarkets. And

we can grow them without pesticides, so we don’t have to feel like the witch from Snow White when we hand our child an apple. We can leave the fruits on the tree, bush or vine till they are fully ripe with the starches changing to natural sugars, so they taste really good. We can eat them fresh while they are vibrant with the Life Force. We can feel proud that we are not buying food that was produced and shipped great distances with petroleum fuels that produce greenhouse gases. Nor are we buying food grown with pesticides and chemical fertilizers that poison our fragile planet.

Fruit crops are often so abundant that, not only are they cheap to grow, there is often so much food that we can feel generous about sharing with friends, neighbors and the Food Bank.

This kind of community wealth not only goes around, but comes around, so the gal giving apples could get plums.

Wow, this sounds really good. And it is! Is it really easy?

ing ornamentals. The economics of Nature are very simple and direct: if you put more in, you get more out; if you put little in, that’s what you get back. Most fruit plants like soil that is rich in organic matter, so add compost and/or composted manure or organic fertilizer every year.

They need water, especially between flowering and ripening, but they need oxygen in the soil too. If the soils are soggy, there will be more disease problems.

Fruit trees don’t like much competition; plant them far enough apart so they have good air circulation and sun. They need pruning: cut down the old canes, thin and shape the trees and replace old plants of strawberries.

And then there is the work of the harvests. Many fruits have to be processed somehow or they won’t keep. You can dry them, can them, freeze them and share them. In a weak economy, and to strengthen community, a cornucopia of fruit could be celebrated. We have much to learn, much to do and much to be gained.

Nothing seems too tough for Mel Miller to handle. She balances a job running supply chain operations, which required her to travel to three countries during her first month on the job, with a commitment to philanthropic organization G Movement. Miller is training for an expedition in Alaska where she and five others will summit and ski down Mt. McKinley (Denali). At 20,320 feet, Denali is the highest peak in the United States and one of the Seven Summits (the highest peaks on each continent). The round trip will take about a month — three weeks for climbing and skiing, with contingency days built in.

Miller and crew will be climbing the West Buttress route, first traversed in 1951. According to Miller’s description, it’s steep, but not incredibly technical.

“It’s ice axe, crampons — that type of thing,” she says of the route. “It’s mountaineering, not technical climbing.”

Miller has been climbing at the Boulder Rock Club and outdoors to prepare her body for the rigors of the route anyway.

“It’s good just to have upper body strength and core strength. It helps with balance and endurance, and also

helps with the pack.”

Miller backcountry skis and climbs every weekend. She’s also been waking up at 4:30 a.m. to run, bike and go through grueling sessions with a personal trainer before work to prepare her for the 14-day ascent with a 60-pound pack and 40-pound sled. The group will face increased crevasse danger due to the season and 45-degree pitches on the way up... and the way down.

Miller can’t help but smile when she talks about skiing down.

“I’ve wanted to climb Denali for a while,” she says, “and since I love skiing more than anything, I saw that was an option, and I finally decided to do it last fall.”

Miller pitched her ski descent idea to G Movement, the philanthropic partnership between sports drink company Gatorade and Action Against Hunger, an international organization geared toward ending hunger worldwide.

G Movement selected Miller to be one of five athletes to receive a $2,000 grant to train and gear up for her trip.

Miller, in turn, also raises funds for Action Against Hunger. The cause is important to her.

“I actually worked for Oxfam for a while in Sudan and Sri Lanka, and it

was fantastic,” Miller says. “You’re able to see different perspectives and get a different feel for the humanitarian needs out there.”

She realized that, worldwide, hunger was one of them, but that little was being done in her own country to solve the problem.

“It’s something that gets glossed over or ignored domestically,” she says.

“A lot of humanitarian issues do, because we’re a developed country. This was something I felt would make a local impact as well.”

Miller has raised more than $1,000 for Action Against Hunger while training for her endeavor. Once she hit that initial goal, she decided she could do more.

“My original goal was $1,000 and we hit that, so I was like, ‘We should make it $5,000,’” she says.

She’ll also serve as an ambassador for G Movement, submitting video before and after her trip, talking about the organization and continuing her fundraising efforts.

Miller says she has support from her family and friends during the process.

“They’re all super-supportive, everyone’s psyched.”

Maybe it’s because trips like these come with the adventurous spirit

Miller’s always exhibited. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native attended school in Ohio and lived in Cleveland for 10 years before moving west to heed the call of the mountains.

In addition to backcountry skiing, Miller’s also interested in climbing.

She counts climbing the Seven Summits among her future goals.

She’s already summited Elbrus (Europe) and Kilimanjaro (Africa).

Miller made several attempts at the summit of Aconcagua (South America) in February of this year, but was forced to turn back due to poor weather conditions. She’s determined to go back to Argentina to finish what she started and to bring in a philanthropic aspect as well, similar to her current work with G Movement.

“I like the link of some sort of benefit other than my own suffering-slashenjoyment, so it’s good.”

Again, she laughs.

The pain is worth the pleasure of helping others... and the ski back home.

Help your organs by eating them

he old adage “you are what you eat” has a whole new meaning when it comes to the nutritional science of food that looks like body organs.

Called “teleological nutritional targeting” by scientists, proponents contend that every whole food has a pattern that resembles the body organ or physiological function that it benefits.

The theory developed from the Doctrine of Signatures, a belief that God left signs, or “signatures,” about how his creations could best be used and discovered through the powers of observation.

Teleology is the philosophical study of the purpose or design in natural phenomena. Apply nutrition to this study and, as an eater, you can determine how a particular whole food, be it a fruit, vegetable or nut, can benefit your body based on its shape, design and color.

Brigitte Mars, a local nutritional consultant and herbalist, says the Doctrine of Signatures contains bits of astrology, alchemy, fact and fantasy. “Though this philosophy sounds superstitious, we must consider how living organisms have all evolved on this planet in the same gravitational force field. We are often composed of the same elements,” says Mars.

Apparent examples of this phenomenon are abundant in a traditional healthy diet. Carrots, walnuts, tomatoes, kidney beans, sweet potatoes, celery, avocadoes and many other common whole foods fit

into teleological nutritional targeting.

Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which supports healthy vision. The retina of the eye needs vitamin A in the form of a specific metabolite, the lightabsorbing molecule retinal. This molecule is absolutely necessary for both scotopic and color vision.

Rich in fiber, antioxidants and minerals, carrots benefit more than just eyes, but can be primarily correlated with healthy vision.

A sliced tomato’s fleshy appearance resembles a heart in color and design. It is red and has four chambers. Containing lycopene, a powerful natural antioxidant, tomatoes are a heart-healthy food. Tomatoes also are an excellent source of potassium, niacin, vitamin B6 and folate. Foods like tomatoes that are rich in these sources are shown to lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease.

Like their name indicates, kidney beans resemble kidneys. Rich in fiber, kidney beans provide energy, stabilize blood sugar and contain many vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Fiber, which is extremely helpful in lowering cholesterol, has been discovered to be a key link to reducing the risk of kidney disease. The kidneys regulate fluid in the body, help the body maintain adequate mineral balance and help remove wastes from the blood. Kidney beans also provide a vegetarian source of protein. Not half bad

recent experience at a national chain sandwich shop in Lusk, Wyo., made me realize why sandwiches aren’t often my first meal choice. My sandwich wasn’t terrible, it’s just that this comestible was strictly functional, with little artistry or care involved in its creation.

It felt as if the whole effort had been phoned in. Fortunately, unlike a chain shop, one Boulder spot does take extra

steps in creating sandwiches that are at once creative, reasonably priced and memorably tasty.

CU may be out for the summer, but you couldn’t tell it from the impressive lunchtime crowd packing Half Fast Subs on the Hill. Besides possessing a clever name, this sandwich shop distinguishes itself by offering such strong drinks as Long Island iced teas and margaritas, and a menu that is longer than Facebook’s privacy policy.

Arguably, this establishment offers up more meatless sandwich selections, using ingredients like locally made tempeh, than any other local competitor.

Salads, ranging from a $4.29 garden number to a $6.29 spinach and tortellini job, are also available.

It’s an order-at-the-counter place, with sandwiches available in 7- and 14-inch increments. The 7-inch should

he legend goes that the sandwich was invented out of necessity for John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich.

Montagu, apparently something of an upper-class twit, allegedly enjoyed this combination of bread and fillings during marathon card games. The truth is that Montagu wasn’t as much of a wastrel as this tale would indicate, and that he served in such key positions as the First Lord of the Admiralty, the top civilian advisor to the Royal Navy, during the American Revolution. However, he wasn’t competent in this position, and his poor leadership didn’t help naval efforts in the colonies.

be plenty for most people. I’d buy a 14-inch if I needed sustenance for a long road trip where, for instance, I might be called upon to deliver a 1970 Dodge Challenger to San Francisco in less than 24 hours. You can also pick up bottled drinks, chips and potato salad while you wait in line.

Colleague Margot went for a surprisingly hearty meatless selection, the $4.99 BBQ veggie sandwich.

Depending on your perspective, the generous slathering of barbecue sauce on this selection was a plus or minus, as it was definitely the dominant flavor.

Yet it was a tasty sauce, slightly sweet in

a way that tasted homemade, as opposed to something out of a bottle.

Copious amounts of mozzarella and Swiss cheese balanced out the sauce’s tanginess, as did full-bodied helpings of tomato, mushroom, green pepper and onion.

Zoe had a $5.99 BLT + Avo, a take on the classic bacon, lettuce, and tomato combo augmented by avocado. It was everything you’d expect it to be, with crisp and lean bacon adding smoky richness. Carin desired something spicy, but not full-on unhealthy, and her 7-inch chipotle cheese steak sandwich substituting chicken for beef (tempeh is also an option) perfectly filled the bill. The moist and tender poultry didn’t make her wish she had ordered beef instead, and the peppery spread was pungent but not unbearably hot. A whisper of pepperoni added more complexity and spice without overwhelming.

Since we were there on a Friday, my 7-inch shrimp po’ boy was available as a $6.50 daily special with potato chips and a fountain drink. I was impressed.

For a buck or two more than what you’d pay at Subway, you can enjoy a reasonable facsimile of something out of the Big Easy. Featuring Louisiana shrimp (one hopes this ingredient remains available given recent events in the Gulf ) lightly breaded and fried, this sandwich didn’t scrimp on the seafood.

A delicate remoulade sauce, coupled with dense French bread, lent an authentic Cajun accent. By the time I polished off this po’ boy, I had a full appreciation of Half Fast’s hearty embrace of value and taste.

Dessert Diva No-Bake Chocolate Oatmeal Bars

The temperature is hot, and so are my desserts (yes, I complimented myself, whatever). Not this recipe, though. I’m saving on your electricity bill and making your life sweet all at the same time. No-Bake Chocolate Oatmeal Bars are a hot June’s friend.

Am I reinventing the wheel? No, but this recipe is a great, tasty treat that is simple without heating up your kitchen, like a vacation for your oven.

It has already been too hot for me. Thank goodness I was up in Vail at the Vail Cascade for Memorial Day weekend. What a fantastic resort, and a great reminder how lucky we are to live in Colorado. Not that I don’t feel that way waking up in Boulder every day, but sometimes it is good to get out of the bubble.

I bring up Vail Cascade because it was a great culinary experience as well.

Atwater on Gore Creek, which is the restaurant there, is simply delicious.

You don’t need to leave the resort for world-class dining — or just a bite by the pool. I wanted to bring all their desserts home with me, but there just wasn’t room in my suitcase. You’d think a Dessert Diva would be prepared for those kinds of things. I’m hoping I can steal a recipe for my TV segment and spread the Vail Cascade love.

My tasty no-bake dessert will have to do for now. No one will be disappointed. Oatmeal, chocolate and peanut butter — not a bad day’s work. This is a great treat to make with the kiddies, too. Let them get their hands dirty pressing it down into the pan.

Anti-bacterial soap and a little cocktail should get you through the experience. I think I will go make a batch right now. Not kiddos, but

Now, follow the directions, put some love into it and invite me over when it’s done.

NO-BAKE CHOCOLATE OATMEAL BARS 1 cup unsalted butter 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 tsp. almond extract 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 cup sliced almonds (plus one tbsp. for garnish) 2 3/4 cups quick-cook oats 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 cup crunchy peanut butter (you can use smooth) Place parchment paper in a 9 x 9-inch baking pan (you can use an 8 x 8 pan too). In medium saucepan on low/ medium heat, melt butter. Add brown sugar, almond extract, cinnamon and sliced almonds. Stir until well combined. Fold in oatmeal and stir until oatmeal is covered with butter mixture.

Press mixture into baking pan, making sure mixture is patted down firm. Set aside.

Melt chocolate chips in small pan on low heat (or in microwaveable bowl). Stir in peanut butter, mix well.

Pour over top of oatmeal mixture and top with one tablespoon crushed almonds.

Let cool for 15 minutes and then set in refrigerator. Let sit an hour.

Take out, cut into bars and serve.

Geneticists and horror

qual parts Species and The Savage is Loose, the eccentric and crafty new thriller Splice isn’t for audiences who require strong, noble rooting interests in their questing protagonists of science.

Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley, neither of whom make it a habit to play for audience sympathy in any circumstance, portray genetic engineers and lovers funded by a cashstrapped pharmaceutical company. They have successfully created a new blob-like hybrid creature, featuring DNA from various species.

From these test cases, they hope to come up with the genetic goods to cure cancer, save lives and become famous.

Then they take the experiments too far, creating a thing that is partly human (she’s female), but with various distinguishing features that make sense in the horror genre. These features include a tail with a deadly stinger, legs like a chicken or a dinosaur, and an accelerated life cycle, so Splice plays out like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in reverse, which is to

xtremely raunchy, Get Him to the Greek is also very funny. Like the film that first paired Jonah Hill and Russell Brand, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, the new comedy is unexpectedly sincere about the thing that matters most in a relationship: trust. It is also creatively diverse in exploring the ways boy-men — a misbehaving rock star on drugs and his star-struck, increasingly addled handler — will be boy-men.

Yes, that old song again. Needless to say, Get Him to the Greek comes from producer Judd Apatow’s stable. But this we do need to say: The Apatow stable has given us everything from Superbad to The 40-Year-Old Virgin to Knocked Up, films devoted to foul-mouthed Peter Pans slouching toward adulthood, each exceptionally rich in comic detail. This latest entry is modest in scope, but it works.

It’s not heinously slick and calculating the way The Hangover was; it actually feels a little bit personal, in the Almost Famous vein (though it’s a lot crasser in texture, properly so, I think), and the stars are required to act, not simply clown around en route to the next payoff.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller wrote and directed Get Him to the Greek, and one of its satisfactions is seeing Hill develop into a comic actor confident enough to relax on screen. In Superbad, Hill played a strident motormouth who couldn’t shut up. That’s a tough personality to vary (though God knows it was true to millions of strident, motormouth adolescents everywhere). Director Vincenzo Natali (Cube), working from a script he co-wrote with Antoinette Terry Bryant and Doug Taylor, frames the material as a metaphoric parental nightmare. The creature known as “Dren,” played as a young adult by Delphine Chaneac, represents every last scarifying aspect not covered in the

book What to Expect When You’re Expecting.

When Polley’s character, who has a dark past indeed, first realizes what they’ve created, she’s gratified for the chance to be a mother.

Brody’s character reacts to the dilemma somewhat differently, and one of the best scenes in an increasingly nerve-racking picture begins as an attempted murder but ends as something else. Polley and Brody serve the story well, conveying a world of moral and physical anxiety.

Are audiences going to be up for this?

The sexual component to Splice pushes the story in provocatively eerie directions. The film, much of which takes place in laboratories or at the couple’s isolated farmhouse, doesn’t deliver “the usual.” I was fine with that — grateful, in fact. A little queasy in the stomach, but grateful.

may fill the frame, but his instincts for hanging back and underplaying come through. There’s a sweetness to his portrayal of Aaron, a record-company gofer charged with flying to London from L.A. to fetch a substance-infested rock star on the wane, played by Brand, for a comeback concert at the Greek Theatre.

Brand’s outlandishly narcissistic preener, Aldous Snow, was introduced in Sarah Marshall. (In the same film Hill played an entirely different character from the one he plays here.)

Looking like a butch Tiny Tim, his tongue lolling about in a perpetual invitation of some sort, Brand refreshes the cliché of the high-living, inwardly hollow showbiz icon. Get Him to the Greek follows a familiar road to redemption, as Aaron becomes

hijacked by Aldous’ excesses and eventually stands up to his boss.

With an effective deadpan, Sean Combs plays the label executive who believes in the supreme power of the mind game.

There’s a side trip to Las Vegas, where Snow’s estranged father (Colm Meaney) plays guitar in a Rat Pack tribute revue. I suspect audiences may be surprised at how seriously the story takes the father/son conflict.

We’re not talking about Greek tragedy (though if they don’t get to the Greek, it will of course be sad). As a director, Stoller’s touch is uneven: When the trouble becomes violently physical in Vegas, the tone seems uncertain.

The bits I liked best are simple and confined.

At one point, in a limo heading to the Today show, Snow wants very much to drink and get high before wrangling with Meredith Vieira. Aaron’s job is to prevent this from happening (though elsewhere he acts as his drug dealer, which Aaron grows to resent).

As he gets progressively drunker and higher himself, Hill’s nauseated reactions are priceless. He and Brand make a swell odd couple, and wisely the script makes time for its supporting players. Rose Byrne and Elisabeth Moss play the true loves of the self-doubting rock god and the wised-up music geek. The movie’s a good, rude commercial comedy. How many good movies have we even seen this year?

The A-Team

deep down, we’re meant to understand, they shout because they care. The movie’s setup would barely pass muster on Three’s Company, and there’s little doubt that the whole thing is going to end in a group hug. But City Island scrapes by and delivers a smile or two because it does contain a fundamental understanding of the rot that sets in when people hide their true selves from the ones they love.

Excuse me, I need to sit down, catch my breath and extinguish my singed eyebrows. I’ve just experienced The A-Team, a highly combustible concoction of testosterone, napalm and gunpowder, seasoned with cheesy comedy and served flambe. In what feels like a tryout for the next Mission: Impossible directing job, Joe Carnahan has made the reboot of the 1980s TV series an excuse to blow up every vehicle, prop and backdrop in a four-mile radius.

The film is a relentless, unapologetic, in-your-face barrage of special effects and virtuoso stunts that roars into action in the pre-credits prelude and rarely downshifts. Carnahan knows that if he throws thundering fists, slashing weapons and retina-searing explosions faster than our brains can download all the visual information, we won’t quibble over issues of fidelity to the source material.

The main benefit of basing The A-Team on a preexisting series is that it comes partially assembled, with the character quirks already in place. That way we can get to the detonations faster. Rated PG-13.

At Flatiron, Century and Colony Square. — Colin Covert Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo

Imagine cramming 128 million people onto an island the size of Montana. You would be pretty close to replicating the density of Japan. Not surprisingly, space is at a premium and ergonomic design is right up there next to godliness. Yet even in Tokyo, the pinnacle of this figurative “can of sardines,” people of all ages still make room for a tiny bit of wilderness. It is only fitting that they have become captivated by nature’s most efficient invention in space, design and function — insects. Sold live in vending machines and department stores, and the subject of the No. 1 videogame, MushiKing, insects inspire an enthusiasm in Japan seen nowhere else in this world. Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo discovers why Japan developed this rich and

Marmaduke is a fun family film because the tale wags the dog. Director Tom Dey takes a serious approach to comedy in bringing the comic strip to the big screen by looking at how the massive Great Dane wants to fit in so much, he’ll do anything.

Marmaduke (voiced by Owen Wilson) must adjust after his owners move from Kansas to California.

He goes from top dog to mutt outcast when he runs into the cliques at the local dog park. His biggest rival is Bosco (Kiefer Sutherland), the alpha dog of the pure breeds. His attempts to be part of the pack result in a series of adventures and misadventures that leave Marmaduke in the dog house.

Marmaduke works because the charm of the comic strip is maintained through a story that never talks down to the audience, voice casting that sells the story and Dey’s direction that’s aimed at all ages.

Fritz Lang’s science fiction masterpiece has been restored to its most complete version ever, with 25 minutes of lost footage not seen since the film’s debut in 1927. Seldom has the rediscovery of a cache of lost footage ignited such widespread curiosity as did the announcement, in July 2008, that an essentially complete copy of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis had been found. When it was first screened in Berlin on January 10, 1927, the sci-fi epic ran an estimated 153 minutes. After its premiere engagement, in an effort to maximize the film’s commercial potential, the film’s distributors drastically shortened Metropolis. By the time it debuted in the states later that year, the film ran approximately 90 minutes. Metropolis went on to become one of the cornerstones of science fiction cinema, foreshadowing Blade Runner and The Matrix to name just two recent examples. Testament to its enduring popularity, the film has undergone numerous restorations in the intervening decades, but none have been as celebrated as this new 147-minute version, which also features Gottfried Huppertz’s magnificent original score. Watching Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time must be what it’s like to ride a camel across the desert: slow, plodding and predictable. It gets the job done but the trip could be more exciting. This video game-inspired film tells the story of a street urchin, Dastan, who is invited to be part of the royal family that rules the Persian Empire. Soon after he becomes a hero during an invasion of a sacred city, Dastan is framed for the murder of the king. He starts out on a quest to clear his name — with the aid of the beautiful Tamina (Gemma Arterton) — but ends up trying to protect a magical dagger that can turn back time. Prince of Persia has all the elements of a grand action film, but they’re delivered with such a lackluster touch by director Mike Newell, the film falls short of grandeur. It barely reaches the level of mediocrity. There are a few good action moments, but the scenes are repeated so many times it’s like playing the same level of a video game over and over. Rated PG-13. which is higher than 0, where it was a day ago, but still lower than any other major release this year, and that’s including Tooth Fairy, Valentine’s Day and, yes, even MacGruber. The critics have been having a field day, notably the New York Post’s Kyle Smith, whose review ran under the inspired headline “Sucks in the City.” Smith didn’t mince words, putting it this way: “As tasteless as an Arabian cathouse, as worn-out as your 1998 flip-flops and as hideous as the mom jeans Carrie wears with a belly-baring gingham top, ‘Sex and the City 2’ is two of the worst movies of the year.” Rated R. Dreamworks seems bored with the ogre who laid the golden egg.
