Highroad Presidential candidates sort of address inequality

A

t last, America’s political leaders indicate that they now feel the pain of the poor and of the millions of working families slipping out of the middle class.

Congress had previously paid no attention to the ever-widening chasm between the rich and the rest of us, but it has recently emerged as a central

issue for such Republican presidential contenders as Jeb Bush, Ted Cruz, Rand Paul and Marco Rubio. They are publicly lamenting the wealth gap and — by gollies — proposing solutions.

Alas, though, the “solution” proposed by each of them is not to provide help for those who’ve been knocked down, but to offer aid to the same corporate elites who’ve been knocking down the middle class and holding down the poor.

Specifically, their solution is to cut taxes on corporations and the rich, do away with environmental and labor protections, and cut or privatize government programs — from Head Start to Social Security — that ordinary people count on. For example, Sen. Rubio proposes to kill the food stamp program (even though the need for it is greater than ever) and redirect that money into what he calls a subsidy for low-wage workers. Does he think we have suckerwrappers around our heads? That’s not a subsidy for workers, but for low-wage

employers. Why should taxpayers subsidize the poverty pay of profitable giants like McDonald’s, rather than making them pay living wages and cover their own labor costs?

I guess we should count it as progress that candidates are at least having to admit that inequality is a problem, but come on — offering the same old failed, anti-government snake oil is an insult to the American people. Jeb Bush shows how vacuous their flim-flammery is by saying that, to address the everwidening wealth and income gap, he’ll “celebrate success and… cherish free enterprise.” Gosh, what a comfort that’ll be to America’s hard-hit majority.

ongressman Polis’ nose is growing by the day. The web of mistruths, halftruths and outright fabrications he is using to justify his support for fast tracking the TransPacific Partnership (TPP) — a secretive trade deal that would expand fracking, destroy jobs and erode local democracy — is astounding. We believe it is essential to correct the multiple factual errors in Congressman Polis’ recent and misleading guest commentary [RE: “Towards a smarter, more progressive approach to trade,” Guest Commentary, May 14) regarding the TPP. Fast Track is a legislative procedure that surrenders meaningful Congressional oversight of trade deals.

It allows the Executive Branch to negotiate and sign trade deals and then present the finished product to the Congress for a take-it-or-leave-it vote.

Congressman Polis refused to endorse last year’s bill, but he contends that the legislation introduced in April is new and improved Fast Track, which he (and he alone) calls “Smart Tracks.” But the bill he now supports is substantially identical to the flawed 2014 Fast Track and even the 2002 Bush-era Fast Track — including some of the provisions that he contends are brand new.

Congressman Polis is heartily supporting legislation written by conservative Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and

former Republican vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan (R-Wis.). Senator Ron Wyden is the only Democratic cosponsor in the Senate and it is bitterly opposed by progressive stalwarts like Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio).

The Hatch-Wyden-Ryan improvements are mere legislative window dressing that do little to ameliorate Fast Track’s fundamental structural flaws.

Senator Wyden’s counterpart in the House of Representatives, Congressman Sandy Levin (D-Mich.), ranking member of the House Ways and Means Committee, considered the dean of trade policy in the Democratic caucus said that Fast Track “puts Congress in the back seat and greases the skids for an up-or-down vote after the fact. Real Congressional power is not at the end of the process, it is right now when the critical outstanding issues are being negotiated.”

But let’s examine some of the provisions that Rep. Polis deceptively highlights as significant improvements: First, Congressman Polis extolls an alleged escape hatch for bad trade deals that provides a “meaningful way for Congress to ‘turn off ’ bad trade deals.”

This opt-out clause is purely symbolic.

vote to reject a trade deal under Fast Track unless the trade committees (the House Ways and Means and Senate Finance committees) first vote to nix the deal. These venues are unabashedly pro-trade and will never vote against a trade deal, which means that the full Congress won’t ever get a chance to prevent a trade deal being considered under Fast Track.

Second, Congressman Polis promises that the new Fast Track ensures that any trade deal would have enforceable labor and environmental provisions “at their core.” But the language on labor and environmental enforcement is largely identical to the 2014 and 2002 Fast Track. Both these prior bills contained the feel-good language to “promote respect for worker rights,” uphold “core labor standards” and “protect and preserve the environment.”

These pretty words have proved to be pretty worthless when it comes to actually enforcing labor and environmental standards. The reason is that the language is not binding on the White House, so it can present a trade deal that fails to ensure that trade partners uphold international labor standards or enforce international environmental agreements.

The current Fast Track lacks the stronger provisions included in some recent trade deals designed to allow the United States to bring trade disputes to enforce environmental and labor promises. Unfortunately, these measures have not succeeded in ensuring our trading partners actually uphold their own labor and environmental laws. Countries have been able to ignore even gross violations of labor and environmental laws without running afoul of trade deals.

Even the Obama administration has failed to doggedly pursue environmental complaints under the Peru trade agreement and violence against union leaders in Colombia under that trade deal.

Third, Congressman Polis promises that “no trade deal can undermine federal law, state law, local law or our national sovereignty.” He has received assurances from the White House, but so have the rest of us. We are unwilling to suspend disbelief in the face of demonstrable evidence that trade deals can and do undermine U.S. laws.

This month, the United States lost another round of a trade disputes challenging our country of origin labeling laws for beef and pork. Consumers overwhelmingly want to know the origin of their food and farmers want to be able to tell them, but the World Trade Boulder Weekly

Organization ruled that these commonsense rules are actually a trade barrier.

The Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture has recommended that Congress repeal or weaken the labeling law to obey the ruling of trade bureaucrats. This capitulation to trade deals on food labeling is not an aberration; the United States has weakened its dolphin-

safe tuna labeling rules, fuel economy standards and Clean Air Act rules to comply with trade disputes.

Finally, Congressman Polis insists that the trade deal will not give special rights to foreign corporations. But leaked TPP investment provisions do give foreign companies the ability to challenge federal, state or local regula-

tions that frustrate their business plans.

If a local community bans fracking, a foreign drilling firm could demand financial compensation for the money it planned to earn from fracking because the new environmental protections “indirectly expropriate” their profits. see GUEST COMMENTARY Page 8

Colorado could be next California

Water restrictions, dead crops, lost jobs — these could be in Colorado’s future. The historic drought crippling California is creeping its way east, and parts of the Centennial State are already struggling. To help avoid California’s fate, Coloradoans must face facts: beef and dairy are sucking up water at an alarming rate. From watering crops grown to feed cattle to providing animals with drinking water and more, the beef and dairy industries place a serious strain on Colorado’s water supply. It can take up to 2,000 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef, and nearly 900 gallons to produce a single gallon of milk. (By contrast, it takes less than 50 gallons of water to produce a gallon of soy milk.)

But far from reducing the impact of beef and dairy, Colorado increased its cattle population in 2015. Coloradans can help save substantial amounts of water just by eating vegan foods instead of beef, dairy and other animal products. For information on how to go vegan, please visit PETA.org.

And they will willingly pay a premium for technologies that can be shown to contribute to national security — and if those technologies reduce the country’s carbon foot-print in the bargain, well so much the better.

news briefs FDA considers expanding drug tests for milk The Food and Drug Administration is considering ramping up testing of milk to look for a wider scope of veterinary antibiotics.

Growing public concern about antibiotics in dairy products prompted the FDA to conduct a study of almost 2,000 milk samples from across the country looking for 31 different drugs. More than 99 percent of the samples were drug-free, but the remaining samples (less than 1 percent) had traces of two drugs that aren’t part of routine testing.

Current testing checks for a minimum of four out of the six beta-lactam drugs — the most common veterinary drugs used on dairy cows — that were found in the samples. The FDA is looking into testing for newer drugs that have been approved for dairy cows since testing standards were created in 1992.

“There’s a need to look at other drugs, besides beta-lactams, that are not being tested for,” said Stephen Beam, leader of the executive board of the National Conference on Interstate Milk Shipments, to Reuters.

None of the six drugs detected in the study were approved for use in lactating dairy cows, according to the FDA. Giving dairy cows two of the drugs — ciprofloxacin and sulfamethazine — is illegal.

Milk from cows on antibiotics is supposed to be discarded, so the FDA has not determined what levels of residue from the detected drugs are safe for humans.

The FDA is seeking public feedback by July 29 to decide how to proceed with new testing regimes.

Save the birds and the bees Bees, bats, birds and butterflies are responsible for every third bite of U.S. grown food, and President Obama wants to keep them in business.

The problem is that honeybees are dying at an alarming rate. An annual survey of beekeepers conducted by the Bee Informed Partnership showed a loss of 42.1 percent of colonies between 2014 and 2015. Most concerning to many, however, was that honeybee deaths spiked last summer, outpacing winter deaths for the first time.

Honeybees alone contribute $15 billion to agricultural revenue annually, according to a May 19 White House report. The report outlines a strategy to protect pollinators based on a yearlong study of the serious decline in bees and butterflies.

“You can’t replace bees with a microrobot or an iPod or an app or anything,” said Sam Droege, U.S. Geological Survey wildlife biologist and bee expert, to National Geographic. “We are completely dependent on bugs to retain the human race.”

Obama has personal stake in the life of bees, with a White House beehive producing honey for his homebrewed beer.

The President’s Pollinator Health Task Force, created in June 2014, found that climate change, disease, shrinking habitat and misuse of pesticides are behind the pollinators’ decline.

To bring pollinators back from the brink, the strategy lists three goals: reduce winter honeybee deaths, increase the monarch butterfly population and restore 7 million acres of pollinator habitat.

The President’s 2016 budget requests $82 million for pollinators. The money would go in part to planting pollinator-friendly gardens around federal buildings and researching effects of pesticides.

However, some environmental organizations claim the White House plan misses the mark by not taking stronger action on pesticides.

“The Administration set ambitious goals to stem bee declines, but without more meaningful action to restrict neonicotinoids and other bee-harming pesticides, it’s hard to imagine how the Task Force will make good on its promises,” wrote Lex Horan, a spokesperson for Pesticide Action Network, in a press release for the Pesticide Action Network North America.

Colorado pollinators can look forward to part of the strategy calling for native seed mixes to be put in reserve for post-fire restoration. Bringing bees back to burned areas will help ecosystem and pollinator recovery alike.

Michael Grab has been building sculptures from balanced rocks in Boulder Creek for seven years. This weekend, police told him what he was doing might be violating city codes and destroying public property.

tone-balancing artist Michael Grab, who’s impromptu sculptures are known to frequent Boulder Creek, was stopped during the Boulder Creek Festival by a Boulder police officer who told him he couldn’t balance rocks in the creek, citing two Boulder City Codes, one against rolling rocks and one on destruction of public property.

Boulder City Attorney Tom Carr says he wasn’t sure whether the police officer was contacted by someone or acting of his own initiative, but the officer did contact the city prosecutor’s office to ask if there was anything Grab could be cited with.

“He was concerned about the environmental effects of moving rocks around in the rivers, particularly during high waters,” Carr says.

Grab was given a warning, but not cited, Carr says.

Grab has been working for the last seven years creating art based on balancing stones and practices regularly in Boulder Creek. He has performed the

art across the world, including a live performance for financial leaders at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. He spent Saturday, May 23, balancing rocks in front of an audience crowding the banks of Boulder Creek, returned to do the same on Sunday morning when at around 11

really making dams or anything, it’s just balancing some rocks up that fall right back down.”

Grab makes a point of knocking down his sculptures before he leaves the area, and encourages anyone who balances rocks to make towers to knock them down before they leave a site to prevent them from becoming a risk to passers-by and therefore being seen as a liability to local government agencies.

“I actually knock over any that I see left standing,” he says.

“They could be dangerous if they fall on somebody.”

In seven years, his previous encounters with the police have been largely positive. Just one encounter at Eben G. Fine Park ended in an affirmation that he would take down sculptures before he left.

The encounter with the police during the Boulder Creek Festival ended in the officer telling him that he would check with the city attorney’s office, and in a Tuesday morning phone call, Grab was informed that the police officer’s interpretation of the codes was

“The codes, if they’re interpreted a certain way, then moving rocks is not a good idea. But I think part of that code was actually implemented because in the past there were some people here and there that started building kind of dams through the creek and there’s some kind of rule about altering creek flow,” Grab says. “I think rock stacking is kind of confused with that. It’s not

true: People could be written-up for balancing rocks in the creek.

That’s when Grab went public, posting to his Facebook page a lengthy recounting of the event and asking people to contact city offices to voice their objections to the decision.

“We started getting calls from all over the world including one from Hong Kong, so I sat down and read the code,” Carr says, “And it doesn’t seem to apply to stacking rocks.”

He told the prosecutor’s office there was no way to prosecute Grab based on those codes, and called Grab with the same news on Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s a long-standing tradition in Boulder for people to balance rocks, even way before I started, and there’s also a lot of other people out there that also practice it,” he says. Had it gone the other way, he says, “I would leave the city. Go to somewhere where it is allowed.”

“These things happen and we try to resolve them, I think we resolved this within a few hours,” Carr says. “I think a lot of people kind of enjoy seeing the rocks stacked, and if there’s a concern, it should be addressed as a policy issue and not by my office trying to go after it.”

etlands in Boulder County’s flood prone areas have enough room to hold the water from seven average storms, according to an Environment Colorado report. But a loophole in the Clean Water Act has left wetlands vulnerable to development and pollution for almost a decade.

Boulder is no stranger to floods. With record precipitation this May, wetlands’ ability to absorb floodwater is increasingly important.

“If you’re a farmer or a rancher and you are, say, applying fertilizer to your land, you have a rainfall event and it runs off, that’s not regulated,” Hamilton says. “You have cows wandering through your ditches or your streams, that is also not regulated.”

Bill Midcap, director of external affairs at the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union, also says the expanded regulation won’t hurt farmers. “[Agriculture] is basically exempted from almost everything in the rule, with the exception of dredging and filling, spraying chemicals or depositing harmful materials into what is perceived as a creek bed or wetland,” Midcap says. “It’s just common sense things that you would not do to your water.”

But not all farmers oppose the rule.

“Clean water is what we need to raise food — raise your food and my food,” Midcap says. “So Farmers Union, although only one of the few [agricultural] organizations, supports the rule.”

The rule also faces resistance in Congress, where multiple bills have been proposed in opposition, saying the EPA is overstepping. One such bill, sponsored by Rep. Bill Shuster (R-Penn.), passed the House on May 12, and moved on to the Senate.

“Polluters and their friends in D.C. are really fighting tooth and nail to make sure that this rule doesn’t get finalized or that it gets undercut immediately after it does get finalized,” Stevens says.

Without the clean water rule, many like Stevens worry that seasonal streams and wetlands that dry up in the Colorado sun are at the mercy of expanding development.

“Wetlands do a lot to protect us and our communities from flooding,” Stevens says. “So we should make sure that we’re doing all we can to protect them.”

The U.S. Corps of Engineers’ clean water rule was approved Wednesday, May 27 and should help to protect the wetlands described in this story.

When you say hepatitis C you can see it,” James says of the look that crosses people’s faces. “They haven’t been educated about it. That’s what it boils down to.”

As for Kendell, he says there was some fear when he began campaigning.

“I thought that at first if they’re going to be negative, what will they think if they know that my mom has hep C?” he says. “But you just keep asking and you just keep raising more awareness.”

For the McGuffey’s, watching Carleen’s struggle has been too personal, too real to be silent about. After she gave birth to the youngest son, Kyle, Carleen underwent a liver biopsy later that year to determine the damage that had been done to her liver after more than 20 years with HCV. What happened next would shape the next few years for the family.

During the routine outpatient procedure to obtain a small piece of Carleen’s liver for testing, the surgeon unknowingly nicked an artery. Carleen woke up in severe pain, but for hours no one could pinpoint why. It was the next day at around 11 a.m. when they discovered Carleen was bleeding internally.

James says fixing the problem was far riskier than the procedure that led to it, and Carleen had to endure numerous nights in the ICU and two procedures to repair the internal bleeding. She was essentially bedridden for a year.

The effect was palpable for the family, especially with a new baby in the house. Kyle was only 6 weeks old when Carleen’s biopsy went awry, and Carleen was unable to hold him, let alone breastfeed him.

“My dad and my aunt honestly didn’t let us on to everything that was happening until later, so I didn’t know it was that big of a deal until after they came home and then we started realizing she almost died,” remembers 16-year-old Kelsey. “The whole process afterward was a bit of a struggle because my mom wasn’t able to help out as much.”

James says that the family has been fortunate that his small garage door business has been relatively self-sustaining in the time since Carleen’s diagnosis and illness. But even with income to keep the family afloat, getting the medication Carleen needed to treat the hepatitis C virus was complicated.

Late last year, a company called Gilead Sciences released a new hepatitis C drug called Harvoni, which has a cure rate of more than 90 percent of those infected with hepatitis C. However, in the U.S., Harvoni can cost as much as $1,000 a pill, totaling more than $90,000 for complete treatment depending upon the prescribed regimen, which is often eight to 12 weeks. Media outlets such as The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal have reported that insurers are denying many patients access to the drug, deeming it medically unnecessary because their livers aren’t scarred badly enough.

But it’s not just Medicare and Medicaid — on May 26, The Wall Street Journal reported that two women were suing Anthem Blue Cross for refusing to pay for the Harvoni treatment.

“My doctor applied on my behalf three times and he was denied three times,” Shima Andre, one of the women, told The Wall Street Journal.

“My liver doesn’t have any damage yet, but that’s the whole point — I want to keep it that way. The drug would prevent the damage that the insurance company wants me to have before they approve the treatment. It’s backwards. “ To further complicate the situation, there are six different strains — genotypes — of hepatitis that each respond differently to treatment and require different lengths of treatment.

Older treatments for HCV included interferon shots, which are self-administered three to five times a week for as many as 48 weeks. The side effects for these treatments can be unbearable for some patients — some report extreme mood swings, loss of hair and flu-like symptoms — leading them to stop taking the drug.

With Harvoni, the reported side effects are far milder and the treatment regime shorter, but the cost seems to be encouraging health plan providers to try to control who has access to the new drug.

insurance and were able to eventually obtain Harvoni through Gilead’s Support Paths program.

James says he’s keeping faith that the medicine will work for Carleen and will clear the virus from her system. He says they can see an improvement already — she’s taking fewer naps than she used to.

Nevertheless, they will keep working to spread awareness about hepatitis C. They have plans to climb a volcano in Mexico this summer, and hope to travel and climb abroad and see if they can take their fundraising work to other countries that need help.

There’s even talk of a cross-country excursion with the whole family in tow, stopping at different cities and setting up opportunities for people to get tested for HCV. “[Carleen] said the other day, ‘Never would I have believed that you’d be the one who’d get our kids involved in service-oriented work,” James says with a laugh. “And I didn’t either, but it’s becoming more and more of a passion every day.

“Here we are, we’re a big family — not the typical people that would ‘have hepatitis C,’ so how can we make an impact?” James asks. “I think we have the story, I think we have the passion now to encourage people and help turn lives around. And so that’s what we’re doing. Mountain climbing is just one part of that, but at the end of the day, what is our goal? It’s to encourage people. It’s to get up out of ourselves and try to make people that don’t have any support feel loved and tell those people it’s gonna be OK.”

These are a few claims made by some of the 10 marijuana-growing companies that Colorado investigated for pesticide-related violations this spring on the Front Range. All these growers — Organic Greens, MMJ America, Altitude East Treatments, Evolutionary Holdings, Mindful, The Green Solution, Sweet Leaf, RINO Supply, Green Cross Colorado and Livwell — were cited for violations related to either the use of prohibited synthetic pesticides, or the improper use of approved synthetic pesticides. These are some of the largest and best-known growers in the state; at best, the crackdown points to systemic negligence in Colorado’s commercial cannabis cultivation.

Look at those claims again — organic, chemical-

free, all natural — and another glaring layer of neglect becomes apparent: companies claiming to use organic practices are using (and misusing) synthetic pesticides.

And nearly 18 months into regulated marijuana retail sale, there is still no official mechanism for organic cannabis certification in Colorado. In the absence of such a mechanism, any company can claim to be organic — evidently even go so far as to include “organic” in its name — with no arbiter and no repercussions.

“If you want to say organic, you can say it — and that’s a problem,” says Ben Gelt, a consultant and cannabis policy expert. Cannabis consumers are vulnerable to blatantly false claims, which ultimately puts their health and safety at risk.

“The misuse of that word [organic] in this industry is pretty astounding,” says John Chandler, organic horticulturalist and director of cultivation at L’Eagle Services, a Denver facility committed to organic growing. But there soon may be one: The Denver-based Organic Cannabis Association (OCA) aims to launch its grower certification program as early as June.

John Paul Maxfield is the founder and visionary behind the Organic Cannabis Association; Gelt serves as an adviser and board member. Maxfield is also founder of Waste Farmers, an organic soil company devoted to sustainable agriculture, with a line of cannabis-specific organic soil, Batch:64. Part of the impetus to start OCA came from Waste Farmers’ struggle to obtain organic certification for Batch:64 for cannabis use. They couldn’t. Currently the Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) has a running list of pesticides approved for cannabis use, based on the “label language” on each pesticide they vet through a formal

Anything not on that list is considered illegal for cannabis — like chemical pesticides Eagle 20, Mallet and Avid, found to be in use among the 10 companies cited for violations this past spring. The CDA has the authority to inspect for and regulate the use of pesticides in cannabis, and there’s a legal gray area that’s allowed the CDA to collaborate with both the federal and state office of the Environmental Protection Agency to develop the list criteria and apply it to their enforcement of Colorado’s Pesticide Applicator’s Act and the Federal Pesticide Worker Protection Standards in cannabis grows.

It was the CDA that alerted the Marijuana Enforcement Division and the Department of Environmental Health to the potential grower violations this spring.

These are vital layers of protection for workers, consumers and the environment in the realm of cannabis cultivation. But that’s about the extent of it.

Although it’s not only a pesticide-use regulator but an organic certifier for other crops besides cannabis, the CDA does not conduct organic certification

for marijuana because of its status as a federally illegal Schedule 1 substance.

“There is no government agency, beyond telling you what the absolute worst [pesticide] you can’t use is, that’s regulating what’s going on,” Maxfield says, and it’s worth adding that none of these pesticides have actually been tested on marijuana. And when growers use “approved” synthetic pesticides but make organic claims, it incenses him.

“If you want to do the shit you’re doing, do it,” he says. “Just don’t do it and tell people that you’re organic, because you’re abusing public trust.”

Right now, growers can’t substantively differentiate themselves, and consumers can’t reliably tell the difference among them.

“Part of what needs to happen, and will happen, with the maturation of this industry, is that a broader spectrum of quality will come into the clear,” Gelt says.

That’s where the OCA comes in.

With consumers more educated and empowered than ever to make food choices based on growing methods and inputs, the OCA believes it can quickly close that gap for cannabis.

The OCA won’t yet say exactly how the certification process will look, but broadly speaking, the initial six-week inspection process will lead to a oneyear organic certification, including at least three random audits annually. It’s designed to mirror the standards, requirements and philosophy of USDA organics, while reducing paperwork, relative cost and the duration of the inspection/approval period. OCA’s lead technicians are experienced organic certifiers and former certified organic farmers themselves. Laboratories with LCMS — which stands for liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, an advanced technology able to pinpoint the presence of a vast range of chemicals — will partner with the OCA to test for pesticides, adulterants and chemical inputs. They’re cautious about revealing too many details until the launch is official.

Especially in the wake of the crackdown, many growers are anxious for a structure like OCA to emerge.

“The most important service an independent organization could provide to the cannabis industry is a pesticideBoulder Weekly

free certification,” says Devin Liles, vice president of production at The Farm, where organic integrated pest and disease management is a core company value. “This is what the Organic Cannabis Association is setting out to do, and we’re interested in being a part of the process.”

John and Amy Andrle, founders of L’Eagle in Denver and outspoken proponents of organic cultivation, have supported the OCA since its inception.

“You can fog a room with pesticides and get done what takes me three full days of man-hours,” John says. “The safest, most wonderful thing about us is all of our [plant] food is pesticide-free, all of our products are pesticide-free.” The Andrles say they’d love to be able to have a third-party certification that recognizes their efforts.

On the medical side, the Denver Dispensary — also openly committed to organic growing — agrees.

“We would welcome organic certification 100 percent,” says co-owner Chris Gilbane. “Right now almost every single shop claims to be organic, yet they use pesticides that are not organic.”

“It would truly let the end-user know what they are really buying, and it would help create trust between the customer and the grower or seller,” he adds.

“There’s no way to tell, from the patient’s perspective, if what they’re buying is true organic or just a bunch of bullshit.”

Boulder cyclist Thomas Prehn ready to tackle his first gravel grinding event in Kansas

n his 2004 book, Racing Tactics, Boulder resident and professional cyclist Thomas Prehn aimed to help other cyclists avoid common mistakes and to “ride intelligently,” as he puts it. The 57-year-old plans on utilizing his own advice as he tackles the 10th annual Dirty Kanza 200, a 200-mile ride over mostly dirt and gravel roads through the grasslands of the Flint Hills in Kansas on May 30. Billed as the “World’s Premier Gravel Grinder,” it’s an epic cycling event riders must complete in one day, riding over polished limestone and fist-sized chunks of gravel, through creekbeds that may well be full, given the recent rains, or could be baking in 100-degree heat, all while rolling up and down hills for a total of about 12,000 feet of climbing. Winners finish in about 11 hours.

“I have actually never done a specific Gravel Grinder event,” Prehn says. “I have done tons of road, mountain

bike and cyclo-cross events, though.”

And although he’s done a few 24-hour events before, this is one race he’ll be doing strictly on his own, rather than with teammates, as he had done in the past.

“I am looking forward to the challenge of doing 200 miles in a day,” Prehn says. “And that is no easy 200 miles of riding in a pack of cyclists. Even though there are 1,500 riders in the different events, you really can’t sit in a pack and get sucked along in a draft. Flat tires and mechanical problems are always a potential challenge.”

But Prehn has never been one to shy away from a challenge. The former USPRO road champion cyclist has been involved in the sport since the early 1970s, won a USPRO road championship title in 1986 and was a consistent top finisher in U.S. National Championship races throughout his career. The Dirty Kanza, however, will be his first official gravel grinding event, which presents a unique opportunity to test his endurance on some of the toughest surfaces a cyclist can tackle.

Rather than the smooth surfaces of a paved road or trail, gravel grinders are gravel road races and rides that combine riding on surfaces such as asphalt, gravel, dirt, some singletrack trails and maintenance or B roads. Courses vary from hard-packed dirt to softball-sized rocks. The distance usually ranges between 50 and 150 miles, but in this event, it’s much longer. He’s been training in the Boulder area for months, although the recent rainy weather has been a bit of a hindrance.

“I have been trying to get in as many miles as I can, but with work and this very wet weather, it is a challenge,” 28 May 28, 2015

he says. “I will not have sufficient miles in my legs before the event, so I will have to be extremely careful as I race.

“One of the best reasons to do gravel or off-pavement road rides is the exploration,” he continues. “I think most Boulder County residents would be amazed at some of the remarkable ‘country roads’ we have just off a major highway or road. Riding on gravel or dirt roads is more of a challenge, but it is also usually away from traffic. That is a wonderful thing. To be able to ride 80 miles through Boulder County and maybe half of it is on gravel or dirt roads where you have virtually no traffic is remarkable. It can be slightly more challenging from a bike-handling perspective because of sand, gravel on the road. Any long bike ride or athletic event can be grueling.”

Prehn didn’t have time in his schedule to check out the terrain before the race, but he has been researching the Dirty Kanza 200 route. He anticipates see GRAVEL GRINDING Page 29

I have already talked with cyclists who have done this before and having some experience in doing some rather extreme events over the years, I know that pacing and keeping moving will be two critical elements to having a great event.”

All 1,500 slots to race were sold out within 24 hours of the event opening for registration, a testament to its growing popularity. As riders trickle in, often between 10 p.m. and midnight, the finish line celebration brings out the town of Emporia, Kansas (population 24,000) in force. Crowds are estimated at 6,000.

“I have no illusion about ‘racing’ this.

I will pin on a number to my jersey and be in the event, but I am mostly going to be enjoying the event, and when I cross the line ... I will be pleased,” Prehn says. “I will be even more pleased if I capture a few great photos and video of this awesome event.”

As a semi-professional photographer, the event also gives him the chance to capture the breathtaking landscapes and other cyclists amidst their own individual efforts.

“I have seen photos, and it looks absolutely fantastic,” he says. “So I am looking forward to stopping every now and again and capturing a shot of two of the riders in what looks like just remarkable pristine countryside. Gravel roads or really gravel paths rolling over beautiful grasslands could be spectacular.”

The popularity of gravel grinding has skyrocketed in the last few years and is now the fastest-growing genre in the cycling industry. The Dirty Kanza 200 has grown exponentially with it. In 2006 there were 34 participants, and this year 1,500 riders are signed up. The race’s founders, Jim Cummins and Joel Dyke, try to maintain the grassroots feel of the event, even as it grows, by keeping a focus on a passion for cycling and the experiences provided by riding what they see as some of the best gravel in the world.

Make way for yesterday Silent cinema is going strong at Chautauqua Auditorium

T

he movies started small. So small that only one person at a time could watch them. The year was 1892, and Thomas Edison and his colleague William Kennedy Laurie Dickson discovered that if you spun sequential photographs in a small box, you could create the illusion of movement. Edison called them Kinetoscopes, and these viewing booths were the iPhones of their day, a private experience where patrons paid to watch short movies of a giddy girl kissing a mustachioed man, of a dancer swirling her dress and of a weightlifter flexing his muscles.

But then on Dec. 20, 1895, on the Boulevard des Capucines in Paris, Auguste and Louis Lumière projected the first movie, “L’arrivée d’un train en gare de La Ciotat.” Immediately, cinema escaped the private and joined the public. A communal experience was born.

They were called many things: “flickers,” “photoplays,” “moving pictures” or just “movies.” They were images projected on silver screens that brought dreams to life and communities together. And while these movies didn’t talk, they were never silent.

Almost always, someone would accompany them with an organ or piano, sometimes even a full-blown symphony orchestra, but regardless of the equipment, the results were pure emotion.

It was a magical combination of image and music that relayed powerful messages to the head and heart, and almost a full century later, those messages still ring true at Colorado Chautauqua’s Silent Film Series.

Not just a trip to the early days of cinema, Chautauqua’s Silent Film series is a celebration of an art form that amazingly continues to remain relevant.

That’s what has Tom Hart, Chautauqua’s program development coordinator, excited for another season

of silent films.

“It is very cool to attend a silent film, to step back and appreciate the wonder of the cinema with live musicians,” Hart tells Boulder Weekly. “Especially in a venue that has been showing films since the advent of motion pictures.”

Now in its 30th season, this jewel in Boulder’s cinematic cap returns with a new line-up of silent (and a couple of not-so-silent) entries to delight audiences young and old. The series runs from June 3 to Aug. 25 and screens 12 features, including classics like Buster Keaton’s Steamboat Bill Jr., F. W. It is an impressive line-up, but even more impressive is the audience that Chautauqua’s 1,000-seat auditorium draws.

“Twenty percent of the audience are return customers,” Hart says. “It’s new to a lot of people. Which always surprises me.”

Not to mention that the demographic cannot be easily categorized.

“It’s a really wide variety. I wouldn’t nail this down to say it’s just the older generation, or just the Baby Boomers,” Hart explains. “It’s a whole variety of people. ... When we did The Black Pirate last year, there was a bunch of college kids dressed up as pirates.”

These movies come from a time when going to the movies was an event, and Chautauqua recreates that atmosphere in hopes of providing patrons with a glimpse into the past. According to musician Rodney Sauer, these movies are still working their magic.

Sauer ought to know. In addition to performing with The Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra — which will be accompanying three of the movies — Sauer programs and accompanies silent shorts at various Boulder Public Library branches, and these programs manage to draw a diverse demographic, as well. Come to any one of Sauer’s performances, and you’ll get an idea of what the cinema was like a century ago.

“From about 1915 thru 1930, where most Americans got their music was from the movie theaters, and it was live music played there,” Sauer tells BW. “Some of the theaters tried to educate the American public. They would play a movement of a Beethoven symphony as the overture to give people an idea of what the concert hall was like. …

“The music was left up to the local theater,” Sauer continues. “If you got a movie, you did not get a score with that movie. It was up to you to put that score together. What I’m doing, I’m creating new scores, but I’m using the same material that was available back then and using the same techniques. So these are scores you could have heard in the 1920s.”

In addition to his work with Mont Alto, Sauer is one part of the Silent Cinema Trio that will perform on the improvised score for The Trail of ’98, a movie about the Alaskan Gold Rush that was shot here in Colorado.

“Instead of the Chilkoot Pass, they actually used the Rollins Pass,” Sauer explains. “The train tracks were still up there, so they could get their camera crews and actors up into the tundra and film these desolate winter scenes, and then come back down to Denver and spend the night in a comfortable hotel.”

Hank Troy, an accomplished silent film pianist accompanying seven movies in the series, will also be performing on The Trail of ’98.

The Trail of ’98 was made in 1928, and Sauer doesn’t think it has been shown in Colorado since, which brings up a fascinating aspect of silent cinema: It’s coming back in a strong way.

In 2012, Sight and Sound conducted a worldwide poll of the greatest movies ever made and three of the top 10 were from the silent era. And while the vast majority of silent films are lost (roughly 75 percent, according to The Library of Congress), each year crucial new discoveries appear. “DJ Nobody and I were booked for this party called Space Invaders in San Francisco by one of my closest friends, Art Don’t Sleep,” he explains. “He rented some vans for us to get there. Daddy Kev hit up DJ Nobody out of the blue and told him he had a gig in San Francisco and needed to hitch a ride.

So Kev was riding with us in the van.

“We went and did our separate gigs that night,” he continues. “The next week, Kev hit me up saying he got a venue. I went to the Airliner and fell in love with this dive bar that was a totally untouched, untapped LA resource. We all loved it so much. It was such a weird, shitty, quirky place that we felt we could flip. That was the inception of it, just one van ride talking about all of these amazing producers nobody gave a

shit about.”

Low End Theory has exploded with popularity in the past seven years and in the interim, the prolific producer has been churning out albums, EPs, compilations and mixtapes with the speed of a ninja. His most recent, 2015’s The Gaslamp Killer Experience: Live in Los Angeles, boasts eight incredible tracks of his signature sound.

“My drums are always live and they’re always a little bit on the distorted, compressed side,” he says.

“They sound pretty funk or rock oriented. I definitely think my drums have a lot to do with my sound. I use a couple of modular synths and a 303 Dr. Sample for all my delays and echoes. Now I use a space echo. It’s crazy. You hear heartbeat drums, and then you hear echoes coming in.

That’s the signature Gaslamp Killer sound.”

‘American Ghost’ seeks to tell the truth in a ghost story

She heard, in the retelling of the family ghost story from aunts and relatives, hints of the battered wives and a resentful disenfranchisement from the choices and opportunities afforded women now.

“When I found this book that my great Aunt Lizzie had written about our family, I realized Julia wasn’t just a story and an anecdote. She was a real person and there were now so many resources available to delve further into her history that it seemed like this was the time to really try to figure out who she was,” Nordhaus says. “But at the same time, I was still projecting onto her, I think because at that point I’m thinking of her as a mother and a woman growing older out in the West like I am. So I very much went into the project trying to learn about her as a person going through the same milestones in life that I was going through.”

What she concludes in her journey — we’ll leave Julia’s to her own pages — is that we choose how much to allow ourselves to be burdened by our own expectations, impinged by our own ability to see past the way our own autobiographies overlay the biographies we report and haunted by those unlived lives.

This documentary recounts the life of ultrarunning pioneer and Boulder native Micah True. Known by his nickname of “Caballo Blanco” (or “white horse” in Spanish), True founded the Copper Canyon Ultra Marathon in Urique, Mexico and was highly involved in the community, until his untimely death in 2012 while on a run in the Gila Wilderness of New Mexico. Matthew McConaughey will star in an upcoming film based on True’s life, making this screening a chance for viewers to see “Caballo Blanco” in action before his story becomes a major motion picture.

Directed by Boulder filmmaker Robin Truesdale in her full-length directorial debut, this documentary takes a look at the production of Barron’s play Einstein, Bohr, and Grandmothers, A Fairy Tale, which was performed at The Dairy Center for the Arts in October 2012. The documentary features performances by the grandmothers as well as a look at the process of staging the play. A Q&A session with Truesdale will follow both screenings of the film.

Our hotel suite was plump with toys, ready, we hoped, to soothe you into America.

But for a solid hour you watched the door, shrieking, Umma, the Korean word for mother.

Once or twice you glanced back at us and, in this netherworld where a door

home had slammed shut forever, your terrified eyes paced between the past and the future.

Umma, you screamed, Umma!

But your foster mother back in Seoul never appeared.

Your new mother and I lay on the bed, cooing your birth name, until, at last, you collapsed into our arms.

act: It’s harder to make people laugh than cry. Fact: It’s harder to make someone laugh a second time than the first. Conclusion: Comedy sequels are the hardest sequels to make satisfying.

Pitch Perfect was a comedy ninja, stealthily stepping from shadows to chuck a throwing star of hilarity into the funny bone of unsuspecting viewers. But Pitch Perfect 2 is an encore performed before a ravenously loyal crowd demanding to hear certain hits. It’s clear that everyone, including first-time director Elizabeth Banks, felt the pressure to obey the raised lighters in the audience and repeat certain notes, lest those lighters become torches and pitchforks.

Awkwardly redundant at times, the sequel ultimately does sing well enough for its supper… just maybe not dessert.

Pitch Perfect 2 opens with the Barden Bellas performing for the President, fresh off having won their third consecutive national a capella singing title. In the first of many refrains from the original, the Bellas have a horribly embarrassing incident in public. This time, instead of projectile vomiting during competition, Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) shows President Obama her full Benghazi. The group gets suspended and can only be reinstated if they win the a capella world championship, which no American team ever has won before because, as the film hilariously reiterates, everyone in the world hates America. Fair point.

Basically, it’s your typical “save the summer camp by winning the contest” plot. But, hey, it’s stuffed with all your favorites! A rap battle-style “riff off,” an oddly melancholy remix of breakout hit

“Cups” and lots of Fat Amy overconfidence jokes. Pitch Perfect 2 has a killer cast of likeable characters but, sadly, forgets to give them stuff to actually do.

Beca (Anna Kendrick) has an internship that’s not only without conflict or stress; it’s arguably the greatest internship of all time. Fat Amy and Bumper (Adam DeVine) oddly explore their relationship, and newcomer Emily (Hailee Steinfeld) struggles to find her place on the team. Every other character is just kinda there, likely repeating their bits from the first film.

And yet, there are signs of the lightning that were bottled once before.

Newcomer Flo (Chrissie Fit) is easily the best addition. Her character’s horrifying asides about her life before getting to America delightfully skewers the melodrama espoused by characters who are convinced a capella competitions are the most important things in human history. Kendrick’s clearly improvised sarcastic moments crackle, the music is always a blast and somehow Fat Amy manages to avoid the “Jack Black uncanny valley” and remain hilarious a second time.

What’s missing is the spontaneity and recklessness that allowed the first film to feature a character making snow angels in a pool of barf. Pitch Perfect felt gleefully wild. Pitch Perfect 2 feels calculated if ultimately satisfying. To put it in more musical terms: If the original was an album you still play on repeat without skipping a song, this sequel is worth putting in sporadic rotation for a few killer tracks.

Carl Boenish takes the plunge in ‘Sunshine Superman’

If they had the notion, and sufficient Sunshine Superman features the high-flying career of BASE funding, there were jumper Carl Boenish. mountains, deserts, jungles, two Poles and the seas in between calling their name. But, by the time the ’60s and ’70s rolled around, most of the Earth was discovered and mapped, leaving exploration either to outer space (requiring an astronomical amount of funding, thus eliminating any hobbyists) or of the self. These intrepid few discovered what could be accomplished by pushing their limits and staring death in the face. Daredevils like Evel Knievel, The Flying Wallendas and Philippe Petit were a few of this new breed of adventurer/athlete, as was the father of BASE jumping, Carl Boenish, whose own personal motto sums up the batch of thrill seekers: “There’s no future in growing up.”

Sunshine Superman, the new documentary about Boenish’s career and life, captures the Peter Pan aspect of Boenish’s resolve. Boenish (rhymes with Danish) was stricken with polio as a child, an Earth-bound disease that no doubt made Boenish hungry for a life up in the sky. And up there is where he found it. While working as an electrical engineer for Hughes Aircraft in the late ’60s, Boenish joined a group of skydivers and found his community. Soon he was jumping off the high cliffs of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, 1,000-foot tall spires, skyscrapers in Houston and Los Angeles, anything and everything that was tall and provided good light, because Boenish documented all his jumps. Out of this came BASE (building, antenna, span or Earth) jumping. It wasn’t necessarily illegal, but it caused trouble for Boenish and his crew, and with trouble came attention. At first, Boenish did it for kicks, but as his popularity and exposure rose, so did the meaning behind his jumps.

Boenish believed his jumps would motivate others to try harder and do better.

Some call it hubris, others, inspiration. Which of those took the lead in his death while BASE jumping in 1984 remains a mystery.

What Carl Boenish brought to the table was the same thing all daredevils bring: entertainment. The possibility of the crash is just as thrilling as the success of the landing, but with Boenish, his jumps became something more. For Boenish, they were imbued with a sense of the divine. From where we sit in 2015, that might seem foolish.

For those on the mountain in 1984, it was as real as the rocks racing past you.

Sunshine Superman, directed by Marah Strauch, heavily benefits from Boenish’s goofy and charming personality, as well as a plethora of footage Boenish produced in his career as a cinematographer/jumper. The footage is spectacular, and the big screen is the perfect place to convey that majesty.

Tibet’s Restaurant & Bar

erhaps nowhere else in Boulder County is food tied to a place as much as Tibet’s Restaurant & Bar in Louisville is to the country and perspective of its namesake.

The interior is designed with care and intention. The owners Mark Herman, and Kami and Pasang Sherpa, the latter two of whom are from Nepal, have carefully placed artifacts throughout the restaurant to effect calm and pleasure. “Each decoration,” the owners write, “serves as a reminder of Buddhist philosophy. … Tibet’s has been decorated with strategically placed items to create the best energy for the space.”

That much is evident before you know any of Tibet’s back-story. The colors of the interior, deep reds and greens, with rich wooden tones throughout and accents of yellow and white, are painted on statues, portraits, furniture and tapestries.

Himalayan folk music churns slowly, cutting in and out at silences in dinner conversation. Portraits of the Dalai Lama and Annapurna catch the eye. Big windows let in light from outside; little candles illuminate from inside. The staff is always smiling, calm and accommodating. Simply, there is balance at Tibet’s. It is pleasing to sit down for a meal there.

Fortunately, there is balance in the food as well.

The cuisine is simple and comforting Tibetan fare.

The restaurant has an exceptional lunch buffet and full dinner service, as well as a full bar.

by Matt Cortina platter. The momos were freshly rolled, packaged and sealed, and you could smell the wet flour though the purse, which retained ideal structural integrity. The meat inside, ground chicken rolled with herbs in this instance, was steaming hot and well-seasoned. It was served with house-made tomato chutney.

Next were small complementary bowls of dahl soup. The dahl was made from pureed lentils and herbs, and with a cold, hard rain falling that evening, it reminded me of the piping hot pea soups I, and many others I’m sure, ate growing up.

Crunchy and thick samosas arrived next. They were packed with potatoes, peas and carrots. The shell was thin and crusty, and tasted like unsweet carnival funnel cake. The samosa bits went well with the chut-

neys and sauces on the table, leftover from the opening round of complementary papadams — crisp chickpea wafers.

We had two entrees that evening — a lamb vindaloo and a chicken curry. First, the lamb was robust and earthy, cut into chunks and stewed in a spicy tomato sauce alongside potatoes. On the plate, too, was the fluffiest rice — long basmati grain — that was a warm and soft bed for the meat. It had deep red spices and the heat was moderate, but can be adjusted according to taste.

The chicken curry was a little brighter on the tongue, but less flavorful than the lamb vindaloo. Sharp tomatoes, ginger, onion and garlic were simmered to form the curry, and the chicken was tender and soaked up the fla-

vor of the sauce.

For dessert, we had a bowl of kir, an Indian rice pudding. The creamy, semi-sweet rice was topped with yellow and purple raisins, nuts and cinnamon. It was cool and understated. Nothing in the dish flashed, but there was something captivating in its simplicity that kept me coming back for more.

That’s a pretty good way to describe Tibet’s.

Hey, who likes radishes? If you do, the Longmont Farmers’ Market is coming through for you in a big way as the first-ever Radish Festival comes to the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont on May 30 from 8 a.m.-1 p.m.

It is the first of six seasonal food festivals held by the Boulder County Farmers’ Markets this year. The Radish Festival will highlight 10 varieties of radishes grown locally, and will feature the Raddest Farmer contest, radish-based recipe demonstrations from the Escoffier School of Culinary Arts, and radish-centric games. Kids can get in on all the radish fun with radish face-painting and necklace making.

Just the sight of strawberries is likely to get your salivary glands working and impart their tart, sweet taste in your mouth. Neurogastronomy leaders are working to explore those brain and taste bud connections

the next level. When a patron orders a seafood dish, they are given an iPod loaded with sounds of the ocean before the meal. Customers that participated in the auditory experience found the meal more flavorful with the ocean sounds than without. It’s the same meal with the same ingredients, but one group found food more flavorful simply by listening to waves crashing on the shore.

Charles Spence, a professor of psychology at Oxford University believes that sound is a forgotten flavor sense.

In his book The Perfect Meal; The Multi-Sensory Science of Food and Dining, Spence discusses one of the more interesting tests on auditory/ brain stimulation, which highlights

how easily the brain can be manipulated. Participants connected to brain mapping equipment were offered a glass of red wine. Sipping on the cheap wine, scientists observed a slight increase in brain waves. Once the participants were informed that it was an incredibly expensive wine, their pleasure and reward sensors spiked dramatically. Consuming a pricey beverage is cause for celebration.

The brain can also be manipulated and turned around to make gross food look appealing and appetizing food appear repulsive. A drippy, clump of green goo, in the right circumstances, may make someone’s taste buds sing. see NEUROGASTRONOMY Page 56

Add some fun colors to the room, the smell of waffle cones and happy carnival music playing, would that make the green goo more or less appealing?

Spence spearheaded a multi-sensory experiment in a bar in London, called Diageo. Shifting colors of lights, textural furnishings and décor, customers reported different flavors with the

same single malt whisky. A room with green hues and sounds of spring playing in the background, the whisky tasted grassy. A room bathed in red, with curved furniture and the sound of bells tinkling made the single malt whiskey a bit sweeter. So which is it, sweet or grassy… or neither? It’s the same single malt whisky, shouldn’t it have the same taste no matter where it’s consumed?

The bottom line is that taste is a

malleable sense, manipulated on a whim to delight or offend with the flick of a light or a jingle of bells.

Gordon M. Shepherd, a neuroscientist at Yale University and author of Neurogastronomy; How the Brain Creates Flavor and Why it Matters writes that it all begins with a thought: “What do I want to eat?”

thinker begins to taste the food in that instant. Whether the food is home cooked or ordered, the senses begin working overtime. Hunger kicks in and anticipation is heightened. The salivary glands come into play, thinking about the food coming.

(Anyone who has taken Psychology 101 is imagining Pavlov’s dogs right about now.) The response is the same: food means expectation and a person drools with the possibility of a tasty reward. When the food is ready for consumption, there is the visual onceover, an involuntary sniff test before the food enters the mouth. Almost all senses are accounted for in the first bite.

Could this science be used to promote healthy eating habits? Several years ago in Spain, Neurologist-turnedchef Miguel Sanchez Romaro, opened his neurogastonomy-themed restaurant to a curious crowd. He promised to stay true to his beliefs and oath as a doctor by serving delicious meals without excess salt or fat. One of his offerings was a round of flavored waters that left the consumer feeling as if they had just consumed an entire meal. The chef explained the flavored water shows the mental process of eating. A part of the brain, the hypothalamus, may be tricked into satiation by manipulating the other senses, in this case the sense of smell and taste.

Restaurants aren’t the only venues capitalizing on this growing trend of sensory eating. Food festivals are beginning to climb on the bandwagon, offering fun exercises to show how the brain and food blend together. The Smell Festival in Bologna, Italy offered a workshop on neurogastronomy. One of the exercises centered on sweetness.

Members of the workshop were offered five different sugar solutions infused with five different flavors. The vanillainfused solution was chosen overall as the sweetest by participants. Not surprising since vanilla is often associated with sweet treats. However, all five solutions were equally sweet.

Thinking, craving and excess saliva are only the tip of the iceberg in a world of mindful eating. This foray into experimental cuisine is a growing trend among foodies that are looking to indulge all five senses during a meal.

Fruit desserts are reported to taste sweeter when served on white plates and less sweet on black plates. Heavy bowls, plates and flatware leave a consumer more satiated than those who eat off of lighter dinnerware. The brain plays a little sleight of hand with the dining experience and it’s becoming clear that we humans eat it up.

Dear Dan: You often mention asexual people. I believe I may be one. I’m a 51-year-old woman. I’ve been separated from my opposite-sex partner for nearly nine years. I’ve been approached by a variety of men, each one interested in becoming “more than friends.” I haunt Craigslist’s “platonic m4w” section, but each time I reach out to someone, he turns out to want a FWB or NSA relationship.

It’s frustrating! That part of my life — the sex part — is really and truly over! I had many sex partners for many years, I had a good run, and now I’m done. When I find someone attractive, I admire them in a nonsexual way. But I do masturbate. Not often. I can go two or three weeks without needing (or thinking about) release. When I do masturbate, it’s more of a “stretching activity” than a passionate requirement. Do true asexuals masturbate?

Am I correct in identifying as asexual instead of heterosexual? Or am I a straight person who has simply retired from the field?

— No Need For Sex Dear NNFS: “There’s some handydandy research on this topic,” said David Jay, founder of the Asexual Visibility and Education Network (AVEN). Jay is the world’s most prominent asexuality activist and widely acknowledged as the founder of the asexuality movement.

Researchers at the University of British Columbia studied the masturbatory habits of asexual individuals and compared them to the masturbatory habits of people with low sexual desire (“Sexual Fantasy and Masturbation Among Asexual Individuals,” Morag A. Yule, Lori A. Brotto, and Boris B. Gorzalka, the Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality). “[They found that] the majority of asexual people (about 56 percent) masturbate on at least a monthly basis,” Jay says, compared to 75 percent of individuals with low sexual desire. “For a sizable chunk of us, this is about a sense of physical release rather than about sexual fantasy.

Masturbation and partnered sex are very different things, and desiring one doesn’t mean that we automatically desire the other.”

And while the fact that you were sexually active for many years, presumably happily, and always with men could mean you’re a straight lady with low to no sexual desire, you’re nevertheless free to embrace the asexual label if it works for you.

“If you’re not drawn to be sexual with anyone, then you have a lot in common with a lot of people in the asexual community,” Jay says. “That being said, there’s no such thing as a ‘true’ asexual. If the word seems useful, use it. At the end of the day, what matters is how well we understand ourselves, not how well we match some Platonic ideal of our sexual orientation, and words like ‘asexual’ are just tools to help us understand ourselves.”

All those crazy labels — bi, gay, lesbian, straight, pansexual, asexual, etc. — are there to help us communicate who we are and what we want. Once upon a time, NNFS, you wanted heterosexual sex, you had heterosexual sex and you identified as heterosexual. That label was correct for you then. If the asexual label is a better fit for you now, if it more accurately communicates who you are (now) and what you want (now), you have none other than David Jay’s permission to use it.

“I also feel NNFS’s pain about Craigslist ‘strictly platonic’ ads,” Jay says. “But I’ve found there are plenty of people out there who are interested in hanging out if I simultaneously say ‘no’ to sex and ‘yes’ to an emotional connection. I wish NNFS the best of luck in finding some.”

High hopes for improved reporting on teen marijuana use

W

hen Rocky Mountain Community Radio reporter Bente Birkeland began tracking legal marijuana’s impacts on Colorado teenagers earlier this year, she discovered key data wasn’t avail-

able.

“The state does not require schools to report marijuana incidents separately,” Birkeland says. “Alcohol and tobacco are in separate categories. But marijuana shouldn’t be lumped in with cocaine or pharmaceuticals. It’s a tough story to report.”

Birkeland personally talked to more than a dozen school districts and came away with the impression that most officials don’t want to discuss drugs in schools with reporters.

“In my reporting I always strive for an objective, accurate story that reflects various perspectives,” Birkeland says. “I told them I’m not trying to bash the school district, but I think they were worried it would make them look like they weren’t doing enough. Boulder was the only one that would let me go in there.”

Boulder Valley School District was open to talking about their approach, including working with a neuroscientist. Odette Edbrooke, health education coordinator for BVSD, welcomed Birkeland’s interest.

BVSD is already involved in proactive communityfacing education efforts about marijuana. Pathways to Success is a district-sponsored event series aimed at families, led by Boulder Psychological Services.

The series included an opportunity to discuss the impacts of legalized marijuana on families at the

She and I took advantage of hosts Dr. Leland Johnston, a psychiatrist in private practice in Boulder, and local counselor Ryan Dawson’s undivided attention.

Johnston advocated full sobriety because of the data on adolescent brain function.

“The inclination from my generation is to see it as not that big of a problem,” he said.

“Everybody is soft-peddling it. Now, with the potency the way it is, the grade of marijuana being smoked routinely by middle school and high school kids is much higher than in the ’60s and ’70s. And dabbing pumps up the potency.”

He said teens who experiment once or twice probably won’t see academic decline or accidents. But for both Johnston and Dawson, by the time parents bring kids to them, usually things have escalated.

Johnston insisted that concerned parents ought to subject teens to randomized drug testing.

But Dawson warned that in his experience with court-appointed drug testing, kids try to get around tests with dangerous cannabis alternatives like spice or K2. And he suggested that criminal outcomes generally are a barrier to treatment for addiction.

Despite Johnston’s calls for teen sobriety and drug testing, he is no drug warrior. He sees research into cannabidiol, or CBD, for treatment of seizures as the most important public health development related to marijuana.

“If there’s good medical documentation of treatment, it’s more than likely cannabis will come out of Schedule 1,” he said, referring to the federal designation of marijuana as a narcotic with no medical value.

Dawson agreed with Johnston that sobriety is the best option, but as a psychotherapist he is focused on harm reduction and talks to teens about using marijuana in a way that won’t derail their lives. He added that while brain development stabilizes by age 25, teens using marijuana habitually risk permanently lowering their IQ. “My clients see only the positive impacts of marijuana, not the negatives,” Dawson said. “In small doses, it can decrease anxiety, but heavy dosage increases anxiety and aggravates psychosis.”

My fellow attendee, the mother who asked not to be named in this article, surmised that the lack of turnout for the discussion reflected disinterest among parents in Boulder. She says she felt that marijuana does not pose as serious a risk as alcohol, tobacco, pharmaceuticals or street drugs.

Nevertheless, Colorado has been awarding grant programs paid for with marijuana taxes to select school districts for added mental health professionals and counselors. And on the last day of the General Assembly, the House and Senate passed a new law, HB15-1273, that requires more trackable reporting.

The declared goals of the new law state, in part, “It is the intent of the general assembly to ensure that high-level, consistent and easily accessible school safety data is available to parents and other interested parties…”

Principals of each public school in a district will be required to submit annual reports to the Board of Education. The Board of Education will compile reports and make them available to the Department of Education and the general public.

If the law works, parents and journalists alike will have better data available for tracking the impacts of legalization on kids. Meanwhile, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is expected to release more research on changes in teenage marijuana use patterns later this year.

Well folks, there is new leadership in Erie and the town’s trustees just said “no” to Front Range Landfill’s controversial proposal to build a liquid waste solidification operation at its Erie facility. Good on ya’ Erie. Here’s to hoping that the word “no” gets easier to say.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to count the ways that Boulder has changed. No, we’re not talking about development or traffic or population. Those are just outward appearances. We’re talking about the way that the old Republic of Boulder has given way to social conservatism.

In the 1960s and early ’70s, people actually were caught having sex on the courthouse lawn in the middle of the day. Pot was illegally sold up and down Pearl Street in plain sight of any and everyone. There was an old stump on the courthouse lawn where people stood and spoke on any subject of their choosing while other people actually stopped and listened. The Chicano movement, the Weathermen, American Indian Movement and Black Panthers were present here and active. “Hippy” was a positive term. The Colorado Daily wasn’t “Camera Light,” it was a feisty publication being tossed off campus for its radical political views.

Students were running for City Council and words like rent control, union, toxics and equality were commonly used in conversations and political campaigns.

That is how Boulder became known as the Republic of Boulder. It was a liberal badge of honor for a liberal community.

Flash forward nearly 50 years and you still hear the words Republic of Boulder being tossed around. But what do those words really mean today in a town that routinely assaults its homeless population with illegal laws aimed and enforced only against those least fortunate among us; a town that is consumed with trying to stop college students from being able to drink in bars on the Hill because they are too noisy and open too late; a town that thinks affordable housing is $2,000 a month for an apartment rental but then makes it illegal to share the space with enough folks to really make it affordable; a town that votes for fracking bans for itself and touts its commitment to fighting global warming only to turn around and vote for pretend Democrats committed to the oil and gas industry and overturning such bans; and a town that recently condemned a young woman who consults for the city because she used expletives in her five minute speech at Ignite Boulder. City Manager Jane Brautigan went so far as to put out a release saying the woman didn’t “represent the city’s values.” Kind of makes your skin crawl, right?

There are still remnants of the old Republic around to be sure, but we suspect that they, like us, no longer use the term to describe today’s Boulder out of respect for what the town once represented.

But who knows what the future holds, as long as there are elections there is hope.

The Republic is dead, long live the Republic.
